I noticed that you have made it clear that you are not one for the first Sonic the Hedgehog film. And I must make it clear that I respect your opinion on it; it is not for everyone, even all Sonic fans.
However, I get a feeling that you are antipathetic to the future installment(s)- you mentioned some time ago you have not seen the second film. But even if you were underwhelmed by the first film, do you believe that they cannot improve?
in the wake of the trailers of the Super Mario Bros movie, I have seen things like "I used to like the Sonic movies, but since the *trailers!* of the Mario movie came out, the Sonic movies suck now!". Do you believe that is really a "correct" way of thinking? Like, regardless of what one thinks of the movies, should people just dismiss all the hard work that people like Fowler and Tyson Hesse put into the films just because they aren't animated like the Mario movie? Or that they don't use much of the game music, like the Mario movie? is this truly shaping up to be a "1:1 or nothing" thing, leaving no room for deviation?
I ask this because I feel that rational StH fans are as rare as hens teeth, especially these days; consider yourself a hens tooth
Tumblr media
The biggest issue I have with these movies is the foundation it laid for itself.
Cue TL;DR rant mode
Let's be absolutely frank and honest with ourselves. The first movie was only saved purely because the controversy of Sonic's design led to him being revamped entirely and Eggman's portrayal was solid. That's really it. I'm not against human characters showing up at all, on the contrary. But this set up is "Take the most superficially basic concept of Sonic then make a bunch of convoluted revisions to the lore of the original series to justify isekai-ing him into San Francisco so we can save money on animated scenes". Like, it's the same problem most children's media being adapted into "live action" suffers from. It's a cheap, lazy adaptation that broke absolutely zero ground and I've held this opinion of it literally since the day it was first revealed and announced with those leaked posters of Chris Pratt and Sonic's initial design.
And just because it didn't end up being as "bad" as it first looked and they brought on actual, talented fans of the series onto the creative team, doesn't suddenly detract from this most basic, fundamental problem. Sonic's movies suffer from what happens when you let Hollywood just go to town on your IP and barely give it proper boundaries to stay in.
Even if they manage to get SOME things right like, Knuckles actually being cool again and the Giant Robot fight at the end of the second film, the reality is they'll still be tied down by the flimsy foundation they started on, like dragging on a wedding scene or putting waaaay more focus and attention on the human characters than the.....main characters we came to watch???
Now compare that with the Mario movie. From the start, Nintendo I understand had a MUCH bigger involvement on the production. It's not like the lame adaptation I mentioned above. They went full on "Angry Birds" level of staying on brand. The entire world feels like the natural, fleshed out idea of "How do we make this feel as warm, inviting, and fantastical as the games but still make it work as a movie?" It's actually BRILLIANT just from first impressions.
I'm sure it's going to suffer from other typical kids movie problems like "Peach's a STRONG WOMAN NOW because she wears PANTS and DON'T NEED NO RESCUER", dumb movie writing or Mario, Luigi and Peach's flat voice acting. But you cannot look at that movie, how it just unabashedly looks, feels and is completely imprinted in Mario and say that Sonic had anywhere NEAR the same level of enthusiastic production on it. I mean, even the cute commercial of their plumbing business in New York is entirely animated and ALSO feels like it fits. They went to the absolute nines with making this feel like a WAY better adaptation in spirit, story and visuals.
Of course I appreciate the hard work the team put into saving the Sonic films from becoming absolute jokes but WHY did it even have to be so compromised in the first place when Mario shows up looking EXACTLY like how I've dreamed Sonic's movies would've been treated?
I'm not wooed over by the small glimpses of Sonic's world or the tiny references they managed to squeeze in there. I'd appreciate those way more if it were ACTUALLY set in it. And I cannot stand this prevailing narrative that "Sonic's world is separate from Earth" in most of these adaptations because it's not! It IS Earth! He's always lived in the same planet as humans, their animal kind is just reclusive and live on islands. That's the actual lore of the games!
This movie made the mistake of doing what Sonic X did. They think it'd be "too weird" for someone like Sonic to have been from Earth as if the intense popularity of it in the first place isn't enough to show how wrong that is? No kid questioned Sonic showing up in City Escape around humans any more than dinosaurs or other crazy entities existing in Dragonball's version of Earth. It's still Earth, just fantastical.
Mario works with that because him iseaki-ing into Mushroom Kingdom is that original lore of the games too I believe. But in Sonic's case it's not and it's so JARRING because they think Sonic himself can't carry a story as the main character. No, kids need a human or avatar to help them navigate the weird, unexplained parts of the series. I'd rather they'd just do that with Sonic himself without needing to be forcibly tied to a regular human. (I'm so annoyed that he couldn't have just run to San Francisco if he wanted because he "needed directions". What a pitiful excuse. And these movies are FULL of them like that.)
Hollywood is a joke and they cannot for the life of them, understand how to effectively adapt most Japanese properties by themselves. Especially anything even remotely inspired by anime like Sonic.
I know this might make me look like "the most offended Sonic fan in the world" right now but in all honesty, I don't really think about those movies much. They function as effective promotional materials for the games and kids like them so whatever. Like, it's just one big Shrug really.
*sigh*

must see horror movies?
the cabinet of dr. caligari (1920). the first cult film. the first horror film. the sets! the somnambulist! the cultural debts we owe this movie will never be repaid.
häxan (1922). a folk-horror fantasia. i've been thinking a lot lately about that teju cole quote about how fiction and nonfiction is not a natural way to split up narrative experiences, and this is a wonderful example of that.
frankenstein (1931). and, really, all of the universal horror movies. but to get your foot in the door at the monster mash, this one is the way to go.
the night of the hunter (1955). robert mitchum as the most sinister of ministers. you can argue that this isn't a horror film per se, but i'll argue harder. one of my favorite pieces of southern gothic, too.
(horror of) dracula (1958). the best of all dracula films and the place to begin with hammer horror. (the sequels get mad campy. but no less entertaining.)
psycho (1960). you don't need me to recommend psycho but i'm doing it anyway and i am doing it for anthony perkins, who deserved a goddamn oscar for this.
night of the living dead (1968). dawn and day are equally worthy for different reasons but nothing beats the locked-down nightmare that started it all.
ganja & hess (1973). this is the only gothic vampire romance that matters. like so much great horror (see: the night of the hunter, above), and especially great horror by marginalized creators, this was rightfully vindicated by history and yet still deserves to be vindicated harder.
the wicker man (1973). summerisle's got everything: christopher lee; bawdy folk songs; phallic maypoles; the battle between christian law and order and the old ways' rights and rites; A CHILD. if you've gotten this far in life without knowing the ending, go watch this immediately before that can change. not only the best folk horror movie of all time, but possibly one of the best movies of all time, period.
the texas chain saw massacre (1974). i didn't see this till 2020, somehow. i thought i was desensitized to whatever it might throw at me after spending my adolescence bragging about getting through a serbian film and thinking house of 1000 corpses was the funniest thing i ever saw. i was dead fucking wrong and i'm so glad i was. every now and then you come across a movie, new or new to you, that reminds you why you're so in love with a genre and revitalizes your passion for it. texas chain saw did that for me.
the omen (1976). my favorite religious horror movie of all time, even more so than the exorcist. also has what i personally consider the scariest scene in any horror movie (the graveyard sequence). gregory peck having been a lifelong devout catholic really adds a certain je ne sais quoi to his performance as the father.
halloween (1978). what is horror without the slasher, and what is the slasher without halloween? i really don't care about your freddys and your jasons. michael myers is where it's at.
hellraiser (1987). like texas chain saw, one of the classics that really puts the horror back in horror. a complete fucking nightmare from start to finish, and the cenobites aren't even the worst of it.
event horizon (1997). yes, see alien. yes, see annihilation. but don't neglect this (literal) hellscape of an outer space horror movie. it is neither glossy nor groundbreaking but it is deeply committed to being horrifying and it succeeds.
el laberinto del fauno (2006). nothing like a fairy tale about a princess of the underworld set against the backdrop of franco's spain to remind you that no one is doing the blending of fantastic horrors and very, very real horrors like guillermo del toro. not to mention that the creature designs in this movie are off the charts - the faun is the most beautiful being i have ever seen.
over the garden wall (2014). (not technically a movie but watched all together it's only about two hours and this is my list, so.) don't let the cutesy old-fashioned cartoon style and jaunty songs fool you. what starts off as charming, if unsettling, folksy quirkiness quickly gives way to another terrific fantasy horror. i watch this annually at halloween and it fucks me up every year.
last night in soho (2021). i hesitate to put something with a plot pretty much entirely revolving around rape and SA on a "must-see" list, but if that is subject matter you're not highly sensitive to, this is a terrific angle on the rape revenge horror movie. not as crass as the, uh, classics of the subgenre, but not defanged to the opposite end of offensiveness like a certain other blonde-led "revenge" movie i won't name. another one of my personal favorites.

Hi Hess,
First of all, your art is so fucking pretty!!!
Second, do you recommend inprnt? I've had people interested in prints and while I do sell those in person, I notice if I promote them online for my international follower, it doesn't gain any traction or people loose interest. Especially as another artist from the Netherlands, would you say it makes the process easier for people looking to purchase internationally?
Or should I try my luck somewhere else.
- Espurr :3
hummm it was mostly a question of convenience for me: how much effort/time do you want to put into printing/shipping prints yourself? if the answer to that is the least amnt possible, going with a platform like inprnt is a good option to still provide prints for folks who want them (but do consider that my main income comes like.. 90% from private commission work - shop sales are not my priority)
i've only been on the platform for a short amount of time, so i cant say much about traction/reach, but i wouldnt expect some incredible boost to that? 🤔 my audience has always been international (blows a kiss to the NA folks bc u help w my business taxes) and when i ran the sales myself, prices were lower for customers than they are via inrpnt i believe, so u wud think higher prices = less sales... they just kind of trickle in slowly on there compared to short sales runs i ran via ko-fi
that was kind of a ramble lol but tl;dr using inprnt makes the process easier for Me, but i cant say whether it makes a difference re: potential (international) buyers

What do you think that sonic 3 will be about?
Hello, my dear!❤️✨
I’m terribly sorry for taking so long to answer your ask. I wanted to make sure that my thoughts were clear and reflected what I felt. I feel that quite a few themes and ideas will be explored through the third Sonic film. I don’t necessarily believe that it’s once singular concept. I also feel that the film could, potentially, take on a darker and more serious tone than the first and second films. (This is only a gut feeling with what the writers for Sonic 3 have stated in the summer 2022).
Down below I’ve shared a couple of the main themes/ideas that I believe will be explored the most:
Teamwork:
Tumblr media
Since the dawn of Sonic’s existence, we’ve become very educated in the power of teamwork. This ranges from Sonic learning the values of working in team to him being a major advocate of teamwork. (It varies between alternate universes, such as games and TV show, and soft “reboots” of the series).
Towards the end of Sonic 2, we see the Wachowski siblings team up in an epic showdown against Dr. Robotnik and his Eggman Robot. We can see that each of them are highly skilled in various forms of combat. That is of no question. What should be empathized is them being in sync with one another. This was empathized by Sonic before he created a distraction (Sonic’s Speech). Seeing the interactions between Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles during the Battle of Greenhills, I firmly believe that the theme of teamwork will be explored. However, it will be Sonic that voices the need of teamwork and not him learning how to work in a team.
When the three of them work together, they become a heroic dynamic. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are able to understand each other without the need of redirection. This is a form of trust and equal opportunity for them to fight. If a team is good, then it doesn’t necessarily need a leader either. A team and their members know how to communicate with one another and encourage each other to become the best versions of themselves.
I feel—and this is strictly my opinion—that the power of teamwork will be explored with Sonic being the advocate for it. I do hope that this makes sense. If not, I’m more than happy to clarify!😊
Grief/Acceptance:
Tumblr media
One of the hardest concepts to grasp in life is that not everyone can be saved… even if they are deserving of a second chance. No matter how hard one may try, it doesn’t always happen. There is also the notion of feeling guilt and grievance towards what was lost as well. All of these emotions rolled into one are facts that one must learn how to live with and come to accept it. I can completely understand that this may feel like a darker and grim tone. (That, and I feel like I can hear some of y’all saying “damn Mystery that’s pretty dark.” Well, Shadow has a pretty tragic backstory). I propose that this concept will be explored: Shadow coping with the loss of his friend/sister and Sonic being made aware of the darker reality of heroic actions. Both of these actions will have our characters become aware of losing something that was loved and accepting that it’s gone.
Here’s the thing: we can infer that the third film will be heavily influenced by Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) (Casey & Miller, 2022). The problem here is that we don’t know how much will be used. We don’t even know if Maria Robotnik will be a character in the film. This is a bold claim to make, I completely understand. I express this concept because of how the adaptation of the films are compared to games and interpretations. Concept art from the second film depicts the corpse of Gerald Robotnik leaning against Shadow’s stasis pod, indicating that this was a potential character (Hesse, 2022) However, this is concept art… we don’t have enough evidence to support the claim that he’ll be referenced in the third film. What do know is that Shadow will be one of the main characters and center of attention.
If anything, we could understand grief and loss the most through Shadow. And in order to approach the situation, Sonic might have to dig deep within himself to express how he felt when he lost Longclaw (and the need for self-isolation for ten years). I will not lie to you: having these conversations are tough. It’s uncomfortable to share feelings deep down and to talk about events that changed us negatively. I feel that having a conversation about losing someone that one loved will be talked about tenderly. With Sonic, I feel that we may see him not only express his feelings of losing Longclaw, but also experience him losing Shadow. Again, there isn’t enough evidence to support that the third film may 100% be a reflection of Sonic Adventure 2. All that we know is that there will be heavy inspiration. Trusting another person to share personal grievances may help other come to terms with loss.
I am not saying that people heal 100% when having these conversations, I am trying to say that it’s a starting point that leads to progress.
Hope✨:
Throughout everything, there is hope. No matter how hard the situation gets, no matter the outcome, there is still a sliver of hope that everything will be alright in the end. And despite everything, that hope is what inspires others to keep going. I feel that hope will be a big theme for the film as well.
And if y’all have any thoughts, please share them! I love to hear concepts and ideas!

“Zionists had organized many committees for the abrogation of the White Paper [restricting Jewish immigration to Palestine] in local communities in America. When the hearings on these resolutions were held, thousands of telegrams poured into Washington urging support of the resolution. How many thousands of the senders knew that when they urged support of H.R. 418 and 419, they were pressing for a Jewish state as well as for abrogation of the White Paper, I do not know. I was present at those hearings which took four days of the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s time at a moment when the world was engaged in a desperate war for human freedom. As I listened to the testimony and saw the ghosts of Herzl, Weizmann, Hess, Pinsker and others sitting in war-time Washington in 1944, I wished that every one of the five million Jews of America might have been sitting there with me. I wanted them to hear the things that were said on their behalf, by men in whom many reposed faith. I wanted my average Jew who thinks Zionism has some relationship to his Judaism hear Abba Hillel Silver say, Zionism is a “secular movement.”  I wanted my Jewish John Doe to hear Mrs. Frances Bolton ask whether endorsement of these resolutions meant that America would be expected to implement such endorsement “with military action.” I would have liked him to hear Dr. Carl Friedrich affirm the fact that by default the ordinary Jew was made a part of all this because “the promises involved in the Balfour Declaration were made not to the Jews of Palestine, but to all Jews.” ...I wish, too, that the average Jewish woman who thinks the Hadassah organization is a philanthropic movement designed to provide medical care for Palestinian citizens and to transport Jewish children out of the hell of Hitler’s Europe—I wish that kind of generous Jewish woman could have heard Mrs. Judith Epstein, speaking for Hadassah, say, 'We are an integral part of the Zionist movement, the objective of which is the reestablishment of Palestine as a Jewish Commonwealth. Toward the achievement of that objective all our work and efforts are directed.'  Yes, I wish the ordinary, non-political American Jew had been in that jam-packed committee room for those four tense days. For, as Dr. Silver observed, they, like the days of the Balfour Declaration, marked a turning point in Jewish history."
-Rabbi Elmer Berger, The Jewish Dilemma, 1945, p 165-166, emphasis mine.
Here Rabbi Berger explains how the fears of Jewish Americans during the Holocaust were used to manipulate them into supporting Zionism, which they falsely believed to be a humanitarian project. In fact, it was not an effort to help Jewish refugees, it wanted to set up a colony in Palestine. Here Rabbi Berger recounts how Zionists used opposition to the 1939 White Paper (which restricted Jewish emigration to Palestine) to convince Jewish Americans to unwittingly support a Jewish state in Palestine.
Rabbi Elmer Berger z’‘l, 1908-1996, was a Reform anti-Zionist American rabbi. He spent his life advocating against Zionism and for Palestinian human rights. He has been almost entirely written out of history, and I hope I can share his work with other anti-Zionists to help right this wrong.
Rabbi Berger worked alongside Palestinians all his life. His story shows that there have always been anti-Zionist Jews in the west, including those outside of ultra-orthodoxy.

supernatural s12e17 the british invasion (w. eugenie ross-leming, brad buckner)
trying to reserve judgement but 30 seconds in a flipped back to football when i tried this yesterday. let me count the ways i do not care about bmol backstory. glad to see eileen again
are you fucking kidding me. children have to battle to the death at the fancy magic school. quite possibly the least believable premise for traumatic backstory starter they could have thrown out there
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sam really leaning into dean's space there lol
so american mol were just this chill little group of dorky researchers but british mol are this child crushing machine to churn out good little soldiers? mommy's blunt little instruments?
DR HESS Then let me make it blisteringly simple. We don't have time to court a handful of mangy Colonials. Not anymore. So either Sam and Dean and the rest of their ill-bred lot learn to obey, or you turn them over to Mr. Ketch... and start fresh. MICK Look, I don't think... DR HESS This is not a discussion. It's an order. Are you hearing me, Michael? Assimilate or eliminate.
this is so.... ridiculous. cliche, out of left field. really not gonna beat the "we're out of ideas" rap. speaking of, was trying to explain this season's plotlines to my friend and had the sudden brainwave of OF COURSE i know who the product of the lucifer kelly KLINE union is. typing out the name had me 🤦lol
Tumblr media
SAM Hey, you talk to Mom lately? MICK Oh, shouldn't worry about your mum. Her and Ketch make quite the team. DEAN Would you want your mom working with him? MICK Well, I can't say. I never really knew my mum. Or my dad. I was on the streets till the Men of Letters found me.
oh a street urchin too! *adds to the pile*
WHY ARE YOU LICKING THE FLOOR'S PUSSY LIKE THAT I AM SO DISTRESSED. the licking was enough to make me cover the screen but the moaning i wasn't expecting 😭 dear lord. ace thing/me thing but my faves doing sex scenes weirds me out and this might have been worse lol way too much like actual sex
LUCIFER I figured out the rules of the house, and…well, all things considered, think I'd rather be here than rotting in the Cage with my drooling, insane – and not in a fun way – little bro Michael.
how did he manage to break michael? i'll be generous and assume it's a lie along with the whole "you win" business
so is mary humanizing mr ketchup or gonna fuck him or what
CROWLEY My loyal…ish subjects, these troubled times, I'm aware there might be some confusion as to where you're supposed to place your loyalty. Even with Lucifer back in the Cage, there are those of you who would try to help him… because he scares you or engorges you.
ew :p
i don't think even mark pellegrino can save this tired little game we're playing again
padalecki, please, no with the bad accent
Tumblr media
very pretty lighting and backdrop
eileen accidentally killing sniveling bootheel of the machine so mick can overcome some childhood murderous brainwashing? and set up conflict with the mothership?
(yes to the fucking mr ketchup and she's gonna Have It All *beanie toss*)
Tumblr media
ok.
Tumblr media
(script)
wasn't sure if that was swoony over the flirting or freaked out, so i guess it was supposed to be swoony
Tumblr media
his plotline is frustrating me but goddamn pellegrino is so good at making lucifer genuinely, distressingly creepy
ah so the plot conflict with bmol and an emotional beat for eileen. twofer
Tumblr media
does the flirtation business ever go anywhere with eileen? i will admit that ellen eileen jody donna all kind of blur in my head from what i've read in fic (side characters that generally aren't involved in what i'm reading except very briefly that may have a familial-ish relationship with the boys, as i might them in the show i have small oh moments)
(oh the actress who plays dagon, ali ahn, was in 27 out of 36 episodes of the path, which i briefly tried to watch because hugh dancy is in it but it was a little too topical for my tolerance at the moment)
DR HESS These Hunters are out of control. The brothers Winchester, in particular, which Lady Bevell has exhaustively documented.
so fancy, brothers winchester. the whole moral high ground lady this is trying to sell is so fucking dumb because yeah forcing children to murder each other, they're totally better than the monsters! pick something else, writers, because this is just asinine
redemption arc for mick complete, time to shuffle him off this mortal coil ofc
DR HESS The grand experiment recruiting American Hunters has failed. Utterly. KETCH Mm. What would you like me to do? DR HESS Exterminate them. Every...last...one.
comically bad. where's your pet cat and eye patch
look they keep trying to reach cas and nothing, because cas decided to pop off to heaven and not tell them. le sigh!

Honestly, I wasn't surprised. I was hurt but I knew it was coming. (Ranting Again)
Tumblr media
Why? Because if she's willing to do this than why wouldn't she do that? As Mick said "the code is what makes a young boy kill his best friend". Except it extends much further than that. As proven:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, tell me (I dare you), that these scenes are not the axact same occurrence, just years later. Why do you think that Ketch is so reluctant to admit that he cares about someone? Because he knows this corrupt sadistic bitch would make him kill them. She doesn't like her Hunters getting too close to anyone. And, especially, doesn't want them to see the error of her ways. Not that TFW is much better because, frankly they aren't. In comparison (AKA to Mick and Ketch) they'd seem damn near like saints but we're not talking about that, are we? Not only was Mick slipping from her iron grasp, so was Ketch. So, she felt the need to correct them. It's no different. And if the fantheory is right about a Mick x Ketch relationship in there later years of Kendricks is correct, I'm surprised she didn't do it sooner. Because I know she's the reason they broke up. Fuck her. Miss against happiness and anything decent. She took away Mick's childhood friend, Ketch's twin, and then she wanted one to kill the other. Reasons like this is why I hate her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There should be a support group for the British Men of Letters because of the shit she put them through and made them commit. And don't even try to say she wasn't forcing there hand. There's only one way out and that's death. Also, did you ever think the reason why Ketch went along with it is because he knew Toni and Mick (his ex-lover and best friend) were safer dead than alive.
Tumblr media
Which goes to show the truth about Dr. Hess and the fact that she had that whole thing planned before she ever contacted Mick to return to HQ. Ketch said he didn't do it and he doesn't straight up lie (only withholds information, not exactly the same thing). So, she made it look like Ketch had texted him, knowing far well that Mick (the caring soul that he is) would respond almost immediately, thinking Ketch was hurt or something. He did seem genuinely concerned and you know it. I wanted Ketch to kill her. Not then (that would make everything worse for them), but later. Like when Jody killed her. Ketch had every right and Jody didn't even know her. And then Team Free Will treating Ketch like he's a worse dick than they are when he was the only one who gave a genuine fuck about Mick. Might I remind you that it's Sam who sent him to his death? Which put Ketch in the worst situation possible. He had two choices: kill his best friend to save him from the code or let Dr. Hess do whatever she wants to him and knowing her, she'd make Ketch do whatever she decided on. He did the right thing. He saved him from the code by obeying the code. It was his only option that would save Mick and not make him just as sadistic as Dr. Hess. Sam nor Cas will never have the capability to care about Mick the way Ketch did and still does. Evidence? Tell me that this does not look familiar?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Can't get a good view of the suit but you can claerly see who he modeled it after. So, please, Ketch haters, tell me I'm wrong.

Half of these videos that you’ve linked have been made with Gacha Life by other 12-13 year olds. Free, I feel like you lack the context for these videos and have completely misinterpreted them. Hess, for speaking out and leading the charge. So whenever I hear “safety is our number one priority” I automatically hear “profits are our number one priority.” Thank you, Dr. Or did they underestimate the sinister nature of their random users? How do you have that luxury when you are creating a children’s programming app? The only logical conclusion seems to be that Google/Alphabet/YouTube prioritize advertising profits over safety. I just find it so hard to believe that intelligent people at Google/Alphabet/YouTube did not see this coming. They should have used more forethought to anticipate how sketchy people would take advantage of the platform’s content creation privileges and taint the entire experience. It reveals the inherent flaw in YTK and exposes their lack of safety design from the get-go. But it upends their business/profit model, and that’s the issue. If the platform can not regulate their offerings to ensure safety because of the enormity of the content they have to screen, then it’s obvious they need to be more choosy about the content they make available and pare it down. Why should EVERYBODY have a place at the table when it comes to creating content on such a prominent platform? If YouTube Kids could be limited to known and trusted brands and shows that actually care about children (PBS Kids, Discovery Channel etc.), this would NOT BE AN ISSUE. (television channels have media placement fees and standards - you want a show, you must pay for a spot, unless that spot is actually sponsored by the network.

Should free channels of user-generated content even be allowed in children’s programming? If YouTube Kids required media placement fees, they would weed out a lot of these psychos who are uploading whatever the heck they want. There is an incredible need to re-evaluate how this type of media is regulated. Use the arrows to scroll through the screenshots: There has to be a better way to assure this type of content is not being seen by our children. Unlike YouTube itself, YouTube Kids is supposed to be specifically FOR kids. This is supposed to be a safe place for our children. There are also some screenshots of the descriptive explanation of the girl attempting to hang herself. The following screenshots are of a Mario Brother cartoon where Mario goes into an all girls school and has lots of inappropriate comments and actions. I settled for screenshots of some other to give you all more of an idea of how significant this problem is. There were just so many that I had to stop recording. It speaks about standing on a chair and having a noose around her neck. In this zombie cartoon friends kill each other out of jealousy.Īnd finally, this cartoon has descriptive writing about a girl who is stopped from hanging herself. In this next cartoon a young girl commits suicide with a knife after her father dies and her boyfriend breaks up with her. There is lots of shooting, violence, and threats to kill in this one. This on is a cartoon with a background song whose lyrics states “Oh she’s hot but she’s a psycho”. An injured and abused female character disguised as a pet wolf is bought for $400 from a masked man with a simple phone call. This next one is a cartoon suggesting human trafficking. This is another Minecraft video with a shooting scene and swearing. Here is a Minecraft video with multiple shooting scenes (one in a school) and swearing. All of the following videos and screenshots are from YouTube Kids specifically and all were found by me just today. All of these videos were found on YouTube Kids, a platform that advertises itself to be a safe place for children 8 years old and under.īelow are just a few of the videos that I’ve found. My research has led me into a horrifying world where people create cartoons glorifying dangerous topics and scenarios such self-harm, suicide, sexual exploitation, trafficking, domestic violence, sexual abuse, and gun violence which includes a simulated school shooting. I wish I could say that they are isolated incidents but unfortunately I cannot. One of those videos, the cartoon with the suicide clip, was brought to light right here on. In the last several days there has been a lot of talk about videos on YouTube and YouTube Kids that are inappropriate for our children.

7/1/22: r/SketchDaily theme, "Frigid Draw Friday/Free Draw Friday." (I did the regular Free Draw Friday. Though this guy does come from a cold place, I suppose.)
This week's character from my anthro WWII series is Boris (no last name ever given). He's a Red Army deserter who is briefly captured by the Germans before being rescued by Romani sharpshooter Didrika. He's pivotal in helping her establish her partisan fighting forces, even though he doesn't get along very well at all with the American Allies who request their assistance.
I had a lot of trouble drawing his hat. Red Army hats are funny looking, sort of like the peaked caps I'm used to drawing but softer and rounder somehow; I didn't have a good side image of one to work with. Also I think he's not intimidating looking enough, so his design might need tweaking in the future.
TUMBLR EDIT: Boris is one of my older characters, not one of the originals but I think he's been around since the old version of my character list dating to around 2002. Despite this, I've never developed his past that much, maybe partly because Soviet Russia isn't a topic I've looked into. I have to make some assumptions about him, I guess. I assume he's working class, not highly educated like Lt. Hesse or Capt. Himmel (despite their rather impoverished upbringing, they got decent schooling), but with practical smarts, more like Lt. Ratdog, which is kind of ironic considering the interactions these two end up having near the end of Boris's part in the story. I know nothing about his family though I'd have to assume he has none left since he never makes an effort to return to Russia BUT that could also likely be due to the fact that he's a deserter. I know very little about WWII Soviet Russia. But I'm pretty sure they would not deal kindly with deserters?
The deserter aspect of Boris's story is a relatively new one. Previously, he was just captured and transported into Germany for whatever freaking reason (lots of this doesn't make clear sense, for example, WTF Papillon and Champere are doing in Germany, I'll admit right now the whole "partisan" angle of the story is wonky), but more recently the word "deserter" popped into my head and it just seemed suitable. Boris tries hard to come across as tough, independent, fearless; it's almost like he overcompensates trying to be macho. His first interactions with Didrika show this. (More on that soon.) From whence comes such overcompensation? Well, him having fled the Red Army could have something to do with it. I imagine this could lead to a lot of guilt and the need to prove himself still worthy of being a fighter, just with a different sort of army. That "army" ends up being Didrika's.
I'm not sure why Boris deserted, I'll just assume life in the Red Army was too damn difficult. Seems feasible. He and a small group of others sneak off but get separated somewhere along the way, and before he knows it, Boris ends up captured by Nazis. In keeping with the old version of events, they transport him into Germany and he ends up in a forest where they subject him to various humiliating kinds of torture. One of the Nazis present at first is Sgt. Kaspar Lange. I don't think I've gone on much about him in here, if at all? That's the name I finally gave to a character better known as Lance Corporal Silver Rat's tormentor when HE was captured by the Nazis. I guess I have to go into some unpleasant specifics, so, reader warning.
Lange is incredibly sadistic, so much so that some parties like to utilize him as a torture device in his own right. For example, Dr. C is the one who sics him on Silver, and he subjects him to a lot of the same types of torture he used on Boris, just in a laboratory setting (Wolfstein is an unwilling witness who afterward helps Silver escape). He has his own small unit of men, and I'm pretty sure they're the ones then-Sergeant Klemper encountered prior to the story, getting ready to burn down a village; Klemper barely manages to prevent this, earning an Iron Cross in the process. Later in the story, now-Private Klemper (he's been demoted) goes to work as a sort of assistant/"bodyguard" for Ratdog, and the two have a sort of on-again, off-again relationship at first; when Klemper gets angry at Ratdog and tells him to go find somebody else to, ah, take home with him, Ratdog obligingly heads to the bar, and runs into Lange. Lange offers to be that someone to go home with him but Ratdog senses something is off, and rejects him. Lange just shows up on his own later on. Ratdog's a good fighter, but not good enough (one reason Klemper's been assigned to him--one of them is a soldier, the other isn't). When Klemper visits him the next day it's obvious something awful happened but Ratdog shrugs it off as a "bar fight." Lange himself all but admits what happened when the two run into each other again but this time, Klemper warns him off at the point of his gun, and threatens him. Lange bears grudges for a long time and this is no exception. When his and Klemper's units are exploring abandoned houses in the countryside one day, he attempts attacking Klemper in the same way he attacked Ratdog. Klemper's a lot smaller and skinnier and younger than he is. BUT, he's been victimized a couple of times himself and isn't going to take it anymore, plus he's cranked up on Pervitin, AKA, meth. Lange subdues him at first but quickly gets the s**t knocked out of him. When Klemper's lieutenant arrives and demands to know what's going on, Klemper snaps that it was a "misunderstanding." Shrimpy effeminate teenaged Klemper is the only one of Lange's victims to manage to fight him off throughout the story.
The detail I find uncomfortable to share is that Lange's specialty is rape. During the story he victimizes Silver and Ratdog (and nearly Klemper) in this manner. Prior to the story's events, Boris was another one of his victims. Didrika, who recently left a life of prostitution after being attacked as an adolescent herself and shunned by her family and has by now learned how to defend herself and live on her own in the woods, stumbles across a group of Nazis torturing him in a clearing; by then Lange has left (fortunately for him), but the evidence of him having been there is evident, as Boris is only half dressed. From a safe distance, Didrika aims and starts shooting. The first Nazi drops dead, startling the others; when the second falls, they realize they're being sniped, but they can't pinpoint the shooter's location since Didrika is taking advantage of a nearby ridge and keeps moving around. Everyone, including Boris (who's restrained and unable to look around himself), is positive they're under attack by numerous shooters. Since they can't fire back, they try to flee. Didrika picks them off until only one is left, who she intentionally lets escape, to spread word that the woods are unsafe. After waiting a bit to make sure no one else is coming, she heads down to the clearing to untie Boris. He can hear her approaching but not see her at first, and fully expects to encounter a group of armed male soldiers, which is why when a lone woman unties him he gets so confused. Looks all around the woods, demands to know where the others are. Then refuses to believe her when she says she's the only one, and he even cusses her out some. The Red Army has its fair share of female snipers, true, but this is Germany, where they don't really believe in such things (when Klemper first encounters Didrika, he disparagingly calls her Flintenweib, "rifle broad") (she calls him "Toy Soldier" in return, which he really does not like, mweheheheh), and besides, what just occurred was surely the work of numerous people, not a lone gunwoman. Oh plus Boris is a chauvinist. Didrika's all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ , don't know what to tell ya, dude, it was really just me. Seeing there's genuinely nobody else around, he has to accept her story as true.
Didrika finds his clothes and lets him dress himself in privacy since he's obviously humiliated, then leads him to the cave network she located and has taken up residence in, and offers him shelter there. She also offers him alcohol and he gets drunk and very angry. To say they don't start off on the right foot is an understatement. Sure, Didrika just saved Boris from further torment and possibly death, but she's just a filthy German and possibly aligned with the Nazis herself (he doesn't know she's Romani, a people the Nazis hate), plus it doesn't sit right with him that he had to be rescued by a woman. He also hates that she witnessed part of what happened even if not Lange's actions themselves. So he takes that out on her. Literally. He comes to the next morning with an awful hangover; Didrika is nowhere in sight. His memory of the previous night is foggy but he gets the gist of it and assumes she left him there, for good reason. Instead, after a bit of exploring, he finds her washing herself up at a small waterfall outside; she offers him its use when she's done and heads back into the caves, so Boris washes up too, not realizing until then how dirty he feels. He heads back into the cave and Didrika has cooked up some breakfast. He awkwardly attempts to apologize for the previous night; Didrika quickly makes it clear she wasn't entirely unwilling, saying that if she'd wanted to, she could have fought him off. Despite his apology, Boris is still a chauvinist, and he's a lot bigger than she is, so he kind of snorts at this comment. Didrika says, "You doubt me?" and Boris begs off further argument though yeah, his attitude clearly says he doesn't believe her. She stands up, challenges him to try to take her on; he refuses to fight a woman but she jeers that surely he'd take her on if she were one of his "comrades" and goads him into lashing out at her, then promptly lays him out on the ground. Boris grudgingly accepts that she's a better fighter than he is, and Didrika earns his respect. Thus begins their rather odd, contentious, but genuine relationship, which carries on throughout the rest of Boris's time in the story.
Not long after, they spot a small group of soldiers while exploring the woods, and Boris excitedly tells her these are the other Soviet soldiers with whom he escaped, obviously searching for him. Didrika prevents him from just running off to greet them, asking if he's positive, if some German soldiers haven't simply stolen Soviet uniforms and disguised themselves as a ruse. Boris says he recognizes their faces, and she lets him go, but refuses to accompany him; when he asks why, she gives him an "Are you completely stupid?" look and says, "I can fight off one of you, not a whole group." Boris is chastened but promises he won't let them try anything with her; she stays behind anyway. He approaches the group of soldiers and they all greet each other enthusiastically; Boris explains how he was rescued by a female sniper, and tries to coax Didrika into coming out. She refrains at first and the other Soviets just kind of side-eye each other, thinking maybe Boris is losing it; Boris hisses that Didrika is making him look like an idiot, and she finally steps out, rifle trained on the group. They're surprised to learn that she's real, but Boris says she's okay, so they greet her as an equal. Things are a bit rocky at first, for example, when they sit together for supper later that night and one of the men approaches Didrika, saying, "Hey, pretty lady, would you like a look at my gun?" she knocks him to the ground and subdues him so he has to yell, "My rifle! I meant my rifle!!" With a combination of this sort of behavior and Boris's persuasion, however, they're convinced to stick together as a group, with Didrika as the leader. Over time the group expands with the inclusion of partisans and a few more deserters and ex-prisoners of different nationalities until Didrika's got her own little army going on, with Boris basically as her second in command.
Didrika's got an odd way of keeping all these men in line. Do I need to go into detail? I think that says enough. Boris is the only one she'd consider a "lover," though, and he isn't jealous of the attention she pays the others since he knows it's only temporary and practical and she doesn't have feelings for them. He DOES, however, get jealous if he suspects she's interested in anyone outside the group, for example when they take in the injured Silver and tend to him. Didrika's not interested in trying anything with Silver, but she spends quite a bit of personal time with him while he's recovering, so yeah, Boris gets jealous--mainly because he thinks SILVER might try something. (Silver's not interested in Didrika, either.) Then again, he just doesn't like the Trench Rats, period. I'm not sure WHY, I just know he doesn't. Maybe he thinks Americans are wimps, maybe he feels the need to prove himself superior to them, maybe it's because they're dirty capitalists, who knows. He doesn't get along with them. He's hostile toward Major Champere's "partisans" (I use the term loosely, as you can see) as well, ironically, because they failed to help prevent an attack on Trench Rats Headquarters when they knew about it ahead of time. Nah, he doesn't care about the Trench Rats themselves, just that he feels this was cowardly on Champere's part, and Boris hates cowards (even though he's a deserter, heheh). (BTW, is it Major Champere or Sergeant Major Champere? I thought it was the former. But my old old notes clearly refer to him as Sergeant Major! So I'm just way beyond confused about how to refer to him now. Meh.)
Back to Sgt. Lange for a moment. He's a rare semi-important character who dies earlier on in the story, in the "Reborn" arc (Sgt. Black Rat/Cpl. Gold Rat), rather than in the horrible, depressing bloodbath that is "Reunion" (return of Sgt. Camo/Cpl. Drake and the climax/end of the war). And yep, it's because he ends up murdered. His body is found lashed to a tree in the woods with a knife wound to his stomach and his mouth full of dirt; he slowly bled out, alone. (Ah, crud. Lange is one of the few characters whose death I don't give a s**t about, but typing that made me feel a twinge. Stop, damn it.) There's a bloodstain on the ground, indicating he died there and was strung up later. Needless to say, there are plenty of suspects.
Capt. Otto Himmel of the SS, which decides to investigate the murder, has some difficulty retrieving him and even ends up captured by Didrika's men, which leads to a quite awkward confrontation. Didrika likes to try to flirt with enemy males in an intimidating way, while Himmel has some bad experiences with intimidating women. He ends up evening the score when he spots Didrika's necklace, a skull and crossbones, and stares at it. Thinking he's staring at her chest, she says, "You like my t*ts, old man?" (Himmel's only in his forties, Didrika's just mean that way.) Himmel, who's not interested in Didrika (or in anyone else, honestly), replies, "I'm sure they're nice, but I was actually looking at something else." Didrika remembers her necklace, which looks so much like the Totenkopf on Himmel's hat, and tucks it in her shirt with a dirty look, nonplussed; she's not used to guys not being interested in her. Himmel's boss, Major Ludolf Jäger, arrives with a white flag and he and Himmel are allowed to retrieve Lange's body and exit the woods without incurring serious bodily harm.
So, what happened to Lange, and who's responsible? Well, Private Klemper is the one who strung him up and shoved dirt in his mouth. Yep, shrimpy, effeminate, teenaged Klemper. He and Ratdog stumble across Lange's body--he's already dead by then--and after a moment or so, Klemper starts laughing. He drags Lange's body to the tree and ties him there, then shoves the dirt in his mouth and laughs even harder. Ratdog just standing there staring all the while like O_o (Klemper's...not quite right in the head, obviously. All the trauma and being a child soldier and whatnot. Oh. And meth.) Klemper's not the one who killed him, however. And neither is Ratdog. Even though both likely had thoughts of doing so, and Klemper is terribly amused that someone actually went through with it.
Silver Rat is briefly a good suspect, but his preferred method of killing is to just snap people's necks, not stab them. Himmel theorizes Lange could have any number of other victims they don't even know about, and any one of them could have done it, so the chances of finding out who the killer is are pretty slim.
None of these parties are aware of the one remaining victim I've mentioned in this entry, Boris. Didrika briefly mentioned to Private Reseda Rat, who serves with Silver, how she'd found him when she'd rescued him, but never went into detail, and Reseda never told anyone else. She never saw Lange and Boris together. No one has any reason to suspect him, as he and Lange haven't been in any sort of contact since the incident occurred, ages ago. When Boris spots Lange alone in the woods, he can't miss the opportunity, and manages to sneak up on him and grab him from behind, putting him in a headlock. "Remember me?" he says, and yep, Lange remembers him. Boris stabs him in the stomach and he drops to the ground. "Gut wound," Boris says, "a slow, painful way to die," then salutes him--"Will give you plenty of time to think"--and leaves him there. Nobody ever finds out for sure who killed Lange.
I think Boris's attitude, especially toward the Trench Rats, mellows out a little over the course of the series. He doesn't survive the war, however. Similar to Klemper, he almost makes it, but not quite. Somehow he suffers a severe injury to his midsection and crawls into an old trench to take shelter; here, he assesses the situation, saying ruefully, "Gut wound...a slow, painful way to die. Pizdetz." With the way things being as they are, Ratdog is the one to find him there; he just recently lost Klemper to a similar injury. (With the way things being as they are, Klemper once saved the life of, and was temporarily involved with, a man who ALSO suffered a similar injury and was taking shelter in a trench much like Boris is now.) He realizes he has no way to help, so he takes his gun, removes all but one bullet, and gives it to Boris, advising him to "use it wisely." He turns to leave and hears the gun cock--Boris is aiming it at him. "I can take out one dirty Kraut before I die," Boris says. "Would it really be worth it?" Ratdog responds, not really giving a s**t anymore, and turning around again and walking away. Boris doesn't shoot him; after sitting and thinking for a while, he decides to use the bullet wisely.
Didrika finds him soon after and, uncustomary for her, breaks down crying; no matter how odd and casual their relationship, they really did care about each other. Similar to Ratdog with Klemper, she has to bury his body alone. She runs into Ratdog not long afterward (they spent a good part of the series shooting at each other while also respecting each other's skills, then Ratdog and Klemper even sent some rescued prisoners her way), and due to their shared grief, the two of them end up together. With the way things being as they are. They name their son Godfrey, after Klemper; the second time Didrika gets pregnant, she wishes to name the child after Boris, but they end up with a girl. They name her Tatiana, after Boris's deceased sister.
After the war, they often spend time visiting with Himmel's large adopted family.

"Blocked" (Spencer Reid x Reader) (Blurb)
Tumblr media
A/N: This is the more self-indulging fic I've ever written. I'm sorry I haven't written much. I'm blocked and depressed and working on it. I am much better at many things right now, just not at writing yet. Thank you for sticking around.
Word count: 679
Summary: Spencer tries to comfort his girlfriend when she feels frustrated 'cos she can't write a story.
Hardcore fluff
Masterlist
- “I quit!!”- (Y/N) shouted, closing her laptop, resting her head and arms on it.
- “Boo, are you ok?”- Spencer walked into their home office and found his girlfriend basically laying on her desk, face hidden in her arms.
- “No. I can’t do this! I can’t write a word, my stories are going nowhere”
- “Come on, (Y/N). You know what your doctor said. You don’t have to push yourself.”- Spencer moved a chair and sat next to (Y/N). He caressed her hair sweetly, knowing that was something she loved, and it never failed to comfort her.
- “I just don’t feel like myself anymore, Spencer”- she whispered- “Writing is what I love doing the most. It’s what brings me joy and calm. It’s my escape from real life.”
- “I know. Just remember what we talked about, cerebral damage in major depressive disorder patients can lead to weaker cognitive functions. Long-term cortisol hormone exposure causes neuron development to slow or stop, leading to shrinkage. Hippocampus damage leads to memory problems, trouble with concentration, and executive dysfunction.”
Spencer just wanted to make his girlfriend feel better. He just didn’t know how to do it. Explaining the reason why she couldn’t concentrate on writing was the only idea that crossed his mind. But sadly, it didn’t work. If anything, it made her feel worst.
- “I know why it happens, honey. I just want it to stop!”- she bit her lower lips, making her best not to cry, but she knew it was impossible not to let those tears fall. Spencer hugged her, trying to comfort her. He tried to think of something else to add, but he was scared to make her feel worst.
- “I just feel like I am letting people down”- (Y/N) whispered against Spencer’s chest.
- “What? what makes you think so?”
- “I don’t know. I just… there are so many people following me, reading my stories, sharing, and commenting. And now I am not giving them anything. I love writing and sharing my stories. I…”
- “Boo, listen to me.”- Spencer held her chees and pecked her lips once before he continued talking- “You are not letting anyone down. You have the right to take some time off writing to focus on yourself. That doesn’t make you a bad person, and I am sure all your followers will understand.”
(Y/N) nodded and sighed, tears still falling from her eyes as she wrapped her arms around Spencer’s body tight and sobbed.
- “I just wanna be myself again.”
- “And you will. Just let the pills and therapy do their work, and you focus on resting and getting better. Ok?”- he felt his girlfriend nod and kissed the top of her head.
- “I’m so sorry. I hate crying so much”- she whispered against his shirt. (Y/N) tried to move from his embrace, but Spencer didn’t let her.
- “Don’t say that. I’m glad you feel comfortable with me and I wanna be here for you every time you need me. I love you, (Y/N), all of you.”
- “Even the things I hate? like my depression?”- Spencer ran his long fingers between his hair and kissed her forehead.
- “When you like someone, you like them in spite of their faults. When you love someone, you love them with their faults.”
(Y/N) moved from Spencer’s arms and looked into his eyes, with a small warm smile on her lips, still keeping him very close to her.
- “Are you quoting Hermann Hesse to look smart, Dr. Reid?”
- “I’m.”- he answered with a smirk, making her smile wider.
- “Thank you for always believing in me, and loving me so much.”
- “Actually, I might show schizophrenia signs at any day now,”- Spencer said, clearly joking- “So… if things get ugly, you are gonna have to take care of me too”- (Y/N) chuckled and kissed her boyfriend’s lips.
- “The bipolar and the schizophrenic. What a pair.”
- “Yes, we could fight crime.”- Spencer chuckled at his own words and felt his heart flutter when (Y/N) giggled.
- “That’s a story I could definitely write.”
