I'm collecting headcanons like Pokemon cards-

The next headcanon I wanna ask the community about is what are people's headcanons about what types of movies and shows the Ben 10 crew watches! Lemme hear what you guys got, so feel free to comment or tag on what your headcanons are! :D

(this is a bit long, but...)

My personal headcanons are:

Ben watches cartoons with everyone, and rambles about his hyperfixations. Anyone who's interested, he insists on watching with them. But, I also say that he's a fan of Horror, Thriller and Comedy! Probably a fan of shows like Brooklyn 99 and things like that. And obviously superhero shows and movies as well haha.

Gwen would probably watch shows like Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, and would totally binge the series with Kevin and Ben. Maybe she gets Rook into the series as well! She definitely feels like a live action gal, liking more intense shows with deep plotlines. But she also seems like she'd watch criminal shows and call the criminals idiots when they make a mistake lol

For Kevin, I feel like he absolutely loves watching trash TV and any shows with cars in them. For the car shows headcanon, he would probably be the type to talk to the TV and say things like, "ha, I could do that better" and stuff like that. For trash TV, he for sure watches that stuff with Ben and Gwen, although Gwen probably isn't the biggest fan of some of the more trashy shows, she still watches with the group. Kevin also watches cartoons, but only ones from the 90's or the early 2000's

And for Rook, I feel like it takes a while before he gets into earth media! And when he does, he's a bit of an oddball! I'd say he likes things like rom-coms, old sitcoms, and lots of bits of shows that the rest of the group recommends! He watches car shows with Kevin, criminal shows with Gwen and anything Ben watches Rook watches as well. He probably loves discussing the shows with the group, and just generally enjoys being included. He's the type of dork to take notes while watching the shows as well haha.

I found your ML meta and analysis posts by accident (i think i saw ur latest post abt adrien) and just noticed you have changed your icon into something matching the current spooky month so that's really cool! 😀I didn't think June's hair could be used for more pokemon but it fits haha and it's cool to see a familiar blog on my dash change their icon like this ^^ I'm also curious - have u seen the recent "ML Paris" special or are you thinking of seeing it? I know everyone is now more and more experiencing multiverse fatique from so many franchises doing their own episodes/movies w this theme, but I just find it a curious way to do character exploration. No spoilers but the special was imo kinda fun and also brought new questions into the fore, especially abt the kwami. Anyway, just wanted 2 comment abt the icon but then realized I could ask somerhing about Miraculous as well.

Thank you! My mutuals noted the same thing about Juniper hair going well on a surprising amount of Pokémon, so now I actually have a collection of pink-striped Pokémon icons to choose from. I’m glad other people liked the change too.

I haven’t seen the Paris special and, before people started posting about it, I was pretty sure I was going to skip it. I’m very suspicious about anything the show crew puts out for this franchise with what they ended up doing with seasons 4 and 5. I even ended up losing enthusiasm for the parts of the franchise I do enjoy, like seasons 1-3, and so I haven’t even seen the Shanghai Special yet despite intending to do so while season 4 was still picking up steam.

However, based on what everyone has been saying, it seems that the special managed to avoid everything I was worried about. With the way the show’s been treating Adrien, I had a lot of concerns over how an EvilAdrien take was going to go, but it seems it's not used to villanize Adrien and Adrien actually gets to influence the story of the special and his feelings are brought up and validated? We haven’t seen that since the Christmas Special. If I ignore all the nods at the seasons I despise and pretend this special doesn’t take place in the same timeline, I might be able to make it through this special.

Basically, I'm on the fence about watching the Specials.

Multiverses have been a superhero staple since All-Star Comics issue 3, which came out in 1940. It’s just that companies have only recently gained enough confidence in the superhero genre to go with the more outlandish genre staples. I’m trying to say that, as a superhero connoisseur, I don’t know the meaning of the term multiverse fatigue.

Looking back at my 2018 gacha stuff

Guess who found some of their old gacha stuff from 2018??

At first I thought gacha studio was gachaverse lol. Anyway this is actually Lila from my pokemon irl blog @vitamin-sea-enjoyer, except a version of her from a tvtropes forum rp.

So then I finally found actual gachaverse and made a bunch of my TvTropes RP characters there too. We have Lila again, her friend Eva, an early version of my sona called Quantum, Erin from a magic school rp and Echo and Layla from a superhero rp.

Then I made a couple of my other pokemon rp characters. The guy on the left is Danny. He's a were-Phantump who got turned on accident by his older sister, the pink haired one to the right of him. She's called Guinevere or Gwen and she's a were-gourgeist. I actually briefly posted as her on pkmn irl tumblr, as someone from a long line of gourgeist hybrids looking for information on her birth family. Then there's Lila again and Eva, showing a bit more of her mad scientist mechanical enthusiast side this time. The one in the back is Miriam Marcaul. The Macrauls were a big rich Kalosian family of collectors in this pokemon RP, and her collection was of plushies. It took me years to realise I'd been spelling the family name wrong.

Then gacha life 1 came out! (prepares grumpy old man voice) back in my day we were excited about 20 character slots! You whipper snappers never had to learn the struggle of deciding who to keep and taking screenshots of what they wore so you wouldn't forget!

I remember I got Gacha Life right before a family trip down to London and I spent the whole 3 hour car ride grinding to level 50 in life mode so I could unlock online exports. Then I made some halloween costumes for some of the characters because there was a party event going on in the RP.

At this point Danny does look quite a bit like my other pokemon OC @shinyhunterderek, but they're actually just inspired by the same yo kai watch character.

Derek was a character who I never ended up using much, so it's nice to have him on here finally doing stuff.

So yeah that's some of my older gacha stuff and the origins of a couple of my pokemon blog characters.

I have some even older OCs I made in gacha studio, but I thought they were cringe and deleted all the screenshots I had of them so I'm not sure if I'll be able to find my very first experiences with gacha.

Its mad to think about how I was there when gacha life came out and now gacha life 2 is here. I remember pre registering for it and being super hyped when I woke up and it was installed. Just like I was for gacha life 2 nearly 5 years later lmao.

Fitz: You thought I forgot abt him. You thought I was a Fitz hater and didn't include him. WRONG. I saved him for last bc he is the ULTIMATE collector. buckle up bc this is gonna be long. He has everything. Gnome collections, rock collections, medicine/herbal collections, knife collections, plants collections, stick collections(him and Biana fight over sticks it's so funny), sticker collections, book collections, jewelry collections (this includes traditional Indian jewelry bc The Vacker's brown idc), clothing collections, shell collections, collections of things that remind him of ppl, ribbons, beads, wires, Doorknobs, carpets, chairs???, star charts, bottle caps, socks, vinyl records, lightbulbs, glitter, stationary, random human junk, Dirt even. Rocks again, literally thousands of rocks. Fitz = rock. He's such a hoarder. Bro even collects cats. You cannot convince me he has an army of pigeons that he has from his time in the human world. Speaking of human cities. he has a trinket from every area he visited, canonically. He has those ugly tourist baseball caps. The "I love New York" t-shirts. used coffee cups from like Starbucks. flattened soda cans. He looks at those soda cans in wonder. It'll forever be a mystery of what these things are. He'll never put two and two together that unflattened soda cans, and flattened soda cans are the same thing. He's mystified. But because he collects so much random shit, he has a lot of cool things too. Like dinosaur fossils(he's a dinosaur boy) that are really rare. Ancient pots and scrolls and other historical things. And he knows the history behind everything bc he's a nerd. Dude could become a billionaire just from the things he owns. He has three Toyotas(that he hot wired???? somehow???). A private jet. A yacht. And iPhone 13. a laptop that he doesn't know how to use. A lottttt of human movies/TV shows which he doesn't know he has. But he does. POKEMON CARDS. He plays the Pokemon games on Nintendo. He and Dex do pokemon battles. Fitz always loses. YU-GI-OH CARDS. Omg bro would be the only one who knows how to Play Yu-Gi-Oh. he's a master at it Dex loses to him in Yu-Gi-Oh sadly. Board games, card games. Comic books. He likes DC more than marvel bc I like DC more than marvel. Idk who his favorite superhero would be. I could do a post on everyone's favorite. baseball cards. Press on nails. CDs. Action figures. fake lashes. candy. Harry Potter wizard wands (he thought they were sticks). Antique Chess boards. Sooooo many cooking supplies. None of the Vackers can cook because they're clowns, so when Della see's her son doing some stress baking, she encourages him to expand into cooking and now he cooks dinner for the entire gang sometimes. He has all the versions of the air-fryers. he uses none of them. Knives that are sharper than Ro's daggers somehow. He owns human property too. Illegally. bc he's a minor and also a citizen of zero human countries. so he has forged documents too. He has 6 pounds of crystal meth. He has no idea what it is, but he has it, he thinks it's plant fertilizer. Don't ask how. For all his Vacker properness, Fitz goes feral in the forbidden cities. He collects pride flags too, for Biana and someday himself, when he stops being in denial. of course all this stuff and he still doesn't have a single human penny to his name. Sophie's feeling homesick so Fitz shows her his hoard. She goes crazy. Everyone makes a day of looking through Fitz's stuff. What crazy is that all of this is under his bed. it's all in there. It's magic. You're wrong if you think Fitz is a normal guy. he's not.

Writing for me is a way to express myself; different than visual art. drawings will have a set way they appear, but the fun in writing is trying to create an image similar to the one in my head also like. its way easier to write a long scene than make it a comic. i’ll do both though and its fun to see what i focus on in each.

8-which of your own projects have shaped your writing the most? in what way? I think collectively it would be something i’ve been calling A Slice of Curiosity Really Makes You Think. Ive lost the original drafts years ago but it was inspired by House of Leaves- at least formatting wise. One character used first person perspective compared to most using 3rd person, wanting to look for the right words to describe really specific things and have them sound right, color coding things within the text. While I usually don’t push it as far as ASoCRMYT did, i still like messing around with formatting- bolding italics and font changes to show voice effects, a few fics where all the dialog is in rhyme, pronoun usage depending on whose in the scene... Its So Fun!

The Origin Of Hokuto No Pen! (hi!)

It's honestly surreal to me that I'm going to be turning 27 on January 4th, 2023. My life has gone through so many changes. My father recently passed away on Christmas, and the 15th anniversary of when I started to become serious about being an animator was only some days ago.

I have been watching animation since I was a child, the first being Disney's Pinocchio. While I was mesmerized by the lifelike qualities of the characters and the way they moved, I'll admit I was sort of impervious to the storytelling of most western animation and some anime here and there. Part of it, was that Pinocchio is literally the greatest animated film in the world, and finding anything that wasn't downhill from there was hard. The animation is flawless, the gags timeless, and the characters incredibly appealing. However I was starting to get sick of these animated western movies that all had the same premises (I'll go into this in a later post. Look for Talking Animals, Talking Objects, and Superheroes.)

I certainly went through a manga and Pokemon phase like many children at that age, where I was genuinely interested in the idea of making a comic in the style and format of a manga, but most of my ideas then were sort of childish and cringeworthy like most elementary and middle schoolers. I loved playing Gameboy games, and valued my prized collection of Pokemon. I have so many fond memories of taking my Gameboy to summer camp to play Pokemon Leaf Green, and trading with my friends. I was certainly making art at the time, but was more focused on having fun and had no clear goals. After all, I was still a kid.

I clearly remember a big change culturally in 2006 when the English dub of Naruto premiered on Toonami for the first time. It was like a genuine break I saw from the same themes and characters I was seeing in western animation. I was just in shock that there was this cool TV show where there were these dudes flying around fighting in mid-air, with all these powers, tremendous worldbuilding, and of course loud grunge music that blasted every time it aired on TV.

At that point I had come to a very strong conclusion that I wanted to be a manga artist. So I spent most of my free time writing stories, but not in the way most other people were doing in. I would write the stories in a very simulated fashion, much like a director does takes of a stage play. I would treat it like I was a kid playing house, and I played the roles of all the characters, would voice them out, and truly test the characters I was writing to see how they could grow and become more interesting. Little did I know there was a film out there that would absoulutly blow my mind and make me drop being a manga artist all together in favor of making animation.

It was when I was 12 years old in December of 2008, I remember being invited to a friend's birthday party, where we watched two films: Hideyuki Kurata's original video animation, Read or Die, and Steamboy.

We watched maybe the first part of Steamboy before we got distracted by cake, but it was Read or Die that literally changed the course of my life forever. For the first time, I saw an animated story that moved me like nothing else had in my life, and created a burning fire in my heart that since has literally never left me.

To me, Hideyuki Kurata was a master at animated storytelling, and he made you feel like your were watching magic you could not explain. Not that it couldn't be broken down or explained, but you were so entertained you couldn't be bothered. It seemed like this man could make a story out of anything, and do so flawlessly. In a moment of being exposed to him, I realized that if I wanted to I could create media that had that kind of impact on myself. I wanted more than anything to do what he was doing.

In the following years, I became obsessed with Read Or Die and the media surrounding it, and began to research Hideyuki and his artistic process, which were like a guiding light to me in tough times.

It was around that time that I had started writing a multimedia project called Inspector Obvious. I kept writing scripts, rewriting, and figure drawing and creating art every single day. I would be submitting my portfolio to animation colleges in hopes that I could learn how to become a better animator. I worked hard in art classes, but was extremely bored and wanted more stimulation and more knowledge about animating from real animators.

I studied Japanese and even visited Japan in high school to the greatest of culture shock, and took my after school art classes as seriously as I could for an average high schooler.

Later in life, after various personal struggles I will refer to in another blogpost with content warnings, I finally worked up the courage to apply for an animation school despite the challenges I faced, and was accepted into Don Bluth University in 2020. I studied under Don Bluth for an entire year over zoom, along with a small class of wonder artists and animators at various skill levels. Don, despite being incredibly old, showed full mental sharpness and attention to each and everyone of us. For the first time, I got real advice about what I was doing wrong, and learned how to think like an animator, more so than I ever thought before.

Studying with Don Bluth changed my life. Since 2021 when I graduated from the program I have been working on my demo reel, and my Inspector Obvious multimedia project which I hope to share with the world someday.

This blog is a culmination of my adventures, and my specific knowledge I have gathered from various old animators overtime, and my nerdy rants about anime or whatever else I think people should know. I feel like I worked really hard to gain this knowledge, and want to share it with everyone.

I also taught myself how to cel paint, and will be discussing my methodology in detail on here.

i love them more than i was expecting to so heres a school sketch i made of my rtdx team yesterday

#the mudkip is the hero named brooke and the charmander is the partner named shula #brooke is v timid and shy and it took some coaxing to get her to make a rescue team #she was always like that but now shes Small and everyone else can pick her up aaaaaah #she mostly agrees for the exploring aspect bc she loves to inspect and find new places and collect things but rescuing grows on her #also she has the squad up rare quality so i assume pokemon actually flock to her naturally whoops #shula meanwhile is very out there very brave and bery righteous and i didnt draw this part here #but shes kind of like got superhero vibes. shes trying to get their teams catchphrase to work as a superhero slogan #she tries to be a toughie but deep down shes kind of a crybaby.#shula basically works brooke up while brooke brings shula down to earth #its a dynamic i might change up bc it feels a tad similar to the dynamic my psmd team has #echoed voice

Hey I'm new

Got an idea for a superhero/magical girl esque au if you wanna hear more owo.

Pokemon are rare magical creatures that humans can sometimes attract and bond with to receive special powers, up to a maximum of 6. Their hero names match the pokemon they gained their powers from. They fight dynamax esque monsters born from macro cosmos's attempts at collecting wishing stars.

That's the general idea. But there's more if you want lol

Welcome, and I'm sure glad you decided to be here, because this is one zinger of an idea.

Pokemon aren't something you could find anywhere. They're around but they're elusive and can't be caught or tamed. They just end up with people. Now do they go to people because of their powers, or do the pokemon bestow the powers?

And that leads to a lot of fascinating avenues, like what Leon's powers would be in regards to his team. Are their powers based on the pokemon specifically or their typing. The typing would make a lot of sense (outside of Leon) because the gym leaders would all have a type power.

And since dark type is the evil type, maybe it's not always superhero? Piers isn't bad though, he'd be more of an anti-hero. Neutral vigilante.

Rose, hero or villain, would be sick af though with steel type powers. And Raihan would be off the charts strong. OOOO this opens up so many ideas I can't even pick one to go down.

I absolutely love superhero au stuff.

Special Interests:

Stuff I'm REALLY into currently: Cats (Warriors series included), Ninjago, stuffed animals, collecting teeth (legally and normally), sorting and organizing, bugs, Centaurworld, and minecraft. Also dogs now because I have two puppies and I love feeding them whatever I can that's not poisonous.

Stuff I like/was into in the past: nature documentaries, cheese, Wordgirl, Wild Kratts, squeaky toys, gardening, Phineas and Ferb, Amphibia, Zita the Spacegirl, pretty much any disney movie, eating oxalis (some people call it sour grass or sour clover, but where I'm from we called it lemon clover because it was a clover that tasted like lemons. Anyway I loved freaking out other kids when I was younger.)

Stuff I know about because of friends and siblings: Transformers, Five nights a freddies, sonic the hedgehog, pokemon, superheroes like spiderman and bat man, undertale, maybe other stuff I'm forgetting.

Tone Indicators:

I only know /gen for genuine and /j for joking. For anything else like sarcasm or seriousness, just do (sarcasm) or /sarcasm. Spelling out the whole thing will do a lot more for me than putting just the first letter and assuming I know what word that goes with.

On my end, everything I say is meant to be said in a positive way. I'm not good with sarcasm so I don't use it when talking to other people. (For example, saying "that's cool" might sound like something sarcastic, but for me it's a genuine "wow I think that's super cool and I like it a lot but I'm a little tired so I'm shortening my thoughts into two words")

Anything outside of my positive stuff will also be said with /serious for posts I don't want people to joke with me about, /joking for things that could come off as mean (which if I don't notice please tell me about), and /platonic for stuff like "I love you" and stuff.

Don't Talk to me About or Show me (serious):

Maggots are a no talk, no show. In general, wormy things and parasites are something I've had literal nightmares over, where I wake up slapping myself to "get them off me". I had to go home once because there were maggots in the compost at work and it made me physically sick. It's probably from watching a horror movie about worms when I was really little, and I haven't been able to get over the fear.

Oceans are a can talk, no show. I have a fear of them, even the ones in video games. Coral reefs are okay as long as there isn't a lot of open ocean in the background. I don't know what it is about them, but just the openness of like huge oceans, or the darkness of the deep parts, and even kelp forests scare me. Mutilation is a can talk, no show. I'm okay with scars and small wounds and injuries, but not the kind that's like guts on the wall or open bodies. Fanfiction Year in Review Meme

Figure I'd do something different for 2021. Hopefully I can remember what I did this year. Technically I'm supposed to be tagged and tag someone else, but alas I got no one to tag

What is your total word count for the year?

I made a lot of WIPs that I'm sure counted for a lot of words, but in terms of actual posting via AO3 I calculated that my post word count is just a little over 19k.

What fandoms did you write in this year?

A lot of Obey Me as well as Pokemon SwSh (for a zine piece), ITSV/Venom, Fate (obviously), a tiny thing for Godzilla S.P., and Jojo (both fic update and zine piece). I've been messing around with a few crossover ideas for Obey Me, one included a tokusatsu/superhero au (think Ultraman, maybe?) and another that included nightmare on elm street. I'm confident to post at least the first chapter(?) of the NoES.

I, uh, got into horror movies these year...mostly slashers set in the DbD universe despite never playing it. Maybe that's how I got that Nightmare idea? Idk. Maybe because Dead Meat remade their Friday the 13th kill counts this year I grew fond of Jason. Let's see if I can churn out something I like. Oh! I also began drafting an idea for a Jujutsu Kaisen/Chainsaw Man idea that's both reader insert and...smut. It might be a while before that comes out.

Did you write more, less, or roughly about what you expected?

I'm surprised I wrote a lot this year. I managed to bring out my first long fic out of temporary stasis and if it wasn't for my shitty ass job wasting most of my time and the fact I don't have access to my go to writing place (aka my college library, which is far away), I'd have more chapters of that.

But my ITSV/Venom fic requires less brain cells as it's honestly good dumb fun. People have been really enjoying it and vocalize how excited they are for the next chapter. Oooh, I have such big plans but not enough time for that fic.

What’s your own favorite story of this year?

Friends Like You and Us, definitely. As I mentioned, it's good dumb fun for everyone involved. It mashed my two favorite hyperfixations together as my love for MCU practically diminishes. But I always had a soft spot for Spider-Man and Venom so they can stay for as long as they like.

What is your most underappreciated story of the year?

I Think My Sister is Up to Something. Despite all the enabling and feedback from my friends when I was throwing around ideas, I don't really get that much engagement and I'm really sad about that. Having Rin did silly hijinks, revealing the reroll roster chapter by chapter, dropping clues as to who or what Sakura is with...I'm essentially talking to a wall as I am every day. I did, however, commission something to draw Suzuka in the FSN school uniform, so I'm taking that as a W

What’s your most appreciated story of 2021?

In terms of fan engagement outside of ITSV/Venom, definitely, You're My Dad! Boogie Woogie Woogie! Probably because of the Diavolo simps lol. I do have a Type(tm) and Diavolo definitely is that, and yet I made a 180 turn and projected my ideals onto him. Whoopsie. But hey, if the other OM stans enjoyed it than it worked out just fine.

Biggest fanfic related disappointment of 2021?

I Think My Sister is Up To Something. For obvious reasons. Maybe my SwSh zine piece for lack of engagement as well.

Biggest fanfic related surprise of 2021?

Definitely the Diavolo fic since I got a notification that someone put it in their private collection of Feel Good fics when they're down. That warmed my heart.

Something you are looking forward to working on in 2022?

Doing more writing, doing more posting, maybe start doing headcanons again. I hope in the future I can get accepted into more zines as a writer, maybe even a guest writer. I also want to do a fic collab with a friend, it's been a long time since I've done that kind of thing. Maybe if I'm lucky, I'll remember to participate in NaNoWriMo

Evaluting Gatchaman Crowds Through Rui’s Outfits

12 Days of Aniblogging 2020, Day 1

Oh, I’m fashionably late to this one. Gatchaman Crowds is a 2013 superhero anime that serves as a soft reboot of the old tokusatsu franchise, only now with 21st century shitty anime tropes. From this painfully generic setup emerges a surprisingly layered evaluation of technological disruption in the smartphone era. For this reason, Crowds is a favorite amongst anime bloggers as a superhero work that’s actually trying to do something interesting.

Unfortunately I don’t care about any of these guys

But it’s also a favorite amongst all sorts of weirdos because of the character Rui Ninomiya. A horrifying amalgamation of the technolibertarian CEO and trans femme hacker archetypes, Rui is by far the most interesting character in the show, because they’re a surprisingly prescient look at how the tech industry will function throughout the 2010s. But they’re also a ‘boy’ who never leaves their house without dressing in the most girly clothes imaginable. Predictably, this is catnip for me. But the funniest part of the whole situation is that nobody ever addresses it. Rui never provides an explanation for their outfits and the rest of the cast just uses she/her until they properly get acquainted and switch to he/him.

I could tell you that Rui’s obviously trans and wrap up the post right there, but that’s honestly not the most interesting angle of attack here. So I’m just going to use whatever pronouns I feel like in the moment for them and focus on what really matters: fashion! Rui has a surprisingly large wardrobe throughout the show, so I’ll be doing the heavy lifting of ranking each of her outfits. Oh, and also maybe a little analysis of what she represents. Spoilers for the whole show, of course.

7. The Yellow Dress

Let me lay out Rui’s ideology before I lay into their fashion disaster. You see, they’re a tech disruptor who believes that governments and bureaucracies are too slow to achieve the monumental (yet unspecified) change that society needs. So, they preside over a smartphone app called GALAX that successfully predicts Pokemon Go’s geosocial AR gimmick three years early. GALAX is a technolibertarian’s wet dream – crowdsourced emergency response, interest-based meetups, and matchmaking for people who need specific help and the people who can help them, all deeply gamified.

Their outfit here is about as messy as their politics, but at the same time, what a look. She’s got blue-and-white-striped programming thigh highs on under her combat boots, which are both such trans iconography, you know? While they may just be a reflection of early-2010s 4chan crossdressing culture, it’s also totally possible that Rui directly influenced or reinforced trans girl fashion, like the accelerationist she is. What a prescient show, in all sorts of weird ways.

6. Lace-up Dress with Bunny Ears

It wouldn’t be an anime girl cosplay without some bunny ears, now would it? Rui spends 5 minutes in an early episode just wandering around the city in this outfit, listening to people’s conversations and feelings on GALAX. There’s something very funny about how nobody even notices them, like they’re completely invisible despite their ridiculous outfit. This actually factors back into the tech stuff! Like pretty much every tech company, Rui’s app and vision are both sleek and shiny but rely on tremendous amounts of dirty labor kept as hidden as possible. From Amazon’s inhumane warehouse conditions to Facebook’s trauma-inducing moderator farms to Apple’s child labor-tainted supply chains, there’s always suffering humans behind the too-good-to-be-true magic of tech companies. Rui’s lie by omission is failing to mention that the app relies on invisible extradimensional beings called CROWDS that are manually controlled by underpaid workers to assist its users. One of the workers comes to Rui challenging their vision and arguing that they should be sharing this tech with the movers and shakers of the world, not trying to keep it invisible. He threatens a collective walkout and Rui fires him. At this point, we’re not even operating on metaphors.

5. Green Business Casual

Sure, most tech companies have cruel labor underbellies, but there’s also the separate risk of moral rot. It’s what causes Microsoft to take on ICE contracts and Google to develop censored versions of their search engine at the whims of authoritarians. Many tech companies start off with an altruistic message, but without a serious ethical core, they will start doing a whole lot of evil as they bend to financial and other pressures. Rui’s version of this is extremely literal: she made a deal with the devil to gain the ability to use the CROWDS and launch her app. Except this devil is also a butch gender-noncomforming alien (there is a Lot of other gender going on in this show that I don’t even have time for) and the two of them seem to have an extremely fucked-up relationship. Like any good Faustian bargain or any bad attempt at raising more venture capital without a viable business model, eventually the whole thing comes tumbling down and now you’re doing something terribly fucked up. Rui looks good in a dress shirt, at least!

4. Whatever your abusive partner puts on when she body-snatches you

Of course the center won’t hold, GALAX is subject to a hostile takeover, and to nobody’s surprise, an app with the flimsy promise to change the world for the better can actually be way better at ripping it all apart. I guess the prescient social media parallel here is Facebook being used to propagate Myanmar’s ethnic cleansing, or really anything related to Twitter for the last 5 years. FuckedUpAlienMimic!Rui sure does have cute fangs and a way more refined fashion sense though. I don’t feel like looking into that one.

3. Business....Futch?

I know I’m not done outlining Rui’s arc, but I’m going to skip ahead for a moment to say that Gatchaman Crowds also has a second season! I’m largely ignoring it here because Rui is pretty much stripped of all plot relevance and most of her outfits are less exciting, but I had to include this one. For two episodes, she puts on bright yellow stirrup leggings and an oversized polo shirt, with a cute ponytail to boot. It’s a ridiculous look, but still feels really evocative to me. Sometimes a girl just has to put together completely uncoordinated outfits and see what happens.

Unlike the disruption-focused first season, Gatchaman Crowds season two, which aired in 2015, is about how unfettered technolibertarianism can easily descend into fascism. Goddammit.

2. The Bunny Ears Outfit Again Oh God Who Hurt Her

The weight of the world comes crashing down in Rui’s hands, she’s bruised and beaten in a surprisingly sadistic manner by her alien ex-business partner/girlfriend, and she’s locked out of her own company which is very quickly causing society to fall apart. So what does she do? She puts the bunny dress back on, and wanders the streets again until she has to call upon the powers that be to fix her own mess. It’s silly that the powers that be in this world are superheroes, but I bet you forgot that this was technically a superhero show at this point. Anyways, my extended metaphor is quickly drifting off course, but I guess this is the part where Rui gets grilled by Congress and slapped with an antitrust case.

1. Every Trans Girl Stereotype Rolled Into One

I’ve been incredibly harsh on Rui throughout this writeup, because I’m harsh on the industry she represents, but I’ll make it up with this section. Look at what she’s wearing! A choker, the gothiest Hot Topic dress imaginable, arm warmers, no less than three asymmetric garters not even holding up anything, and the tallest black boots she could find. It’s incredible! If the first outfit on this list was hinting at her relationship to stereotypical trans fashion, then this outfit just screams it. It’s the perfect goth femme hacker look, a style commitment I have no choice but to respect.

Gatchaman is a weird show. After spending most of its runtime thoroughly dunking on tech disruptors for being too optimistic and uncritical, it takes a last-minute turn into Lockean state of nature arguments. It settles on “the masses are inherently good enough that empowering people through technology shouldn’t ever be a problem”, ignoring all the suffering that happened due to Rui’s unwillingness to curate their own technology. I’d give Gatchaman Crowds an average rating, but it’s one of those interesting average ratings where instead of being milquetoast, they tried something and failed and wrote themselves into a corner. But hey, at least there’s an interestingly gendered character!
