Thoughts on Endgame
Spoilers under the cut
Let’s start with the negatives to get it out of the way, yeah?
I can not believe they didn’t fix the travesty that was Loki’s death in IW. That big of a character? That character arc? A character that was only supposed to be a one movie villain yet became one of the most beloved characters of the entire MCU? You fully expect us to believe that the end of such an amazing character would be going at Thanos with a dagger and being killed off in the beginning of a movie? Like he was nothing? Insulting to Loki, insulting to the fans.
I can understand why they killed Nat instead of Clint, although I was fuming during that scene, I did not cry one bit, I was that pissed off. And yeah maybe the patriarchy has made me bitter and resentful but all I could think of was “You really gonna do that? Kill off the only female Avenger of the original 6?” and especially after how they have treated her character, giving her a new personality every movie. It didn’t feel right. Would’ve made more sense (to me at least) for Hawkeye to take the plunge and for Nat to dissappear at the end of the movie, just leaving never to be heard of again. It feels more in line with their characters. But maybe that’s just me.
Thor. Don’t even get me started on the dumpsterfire that is Thor’s character. Up until Ragnarök he was consistent, he made sense. Then ragnarök came and turned both Thor and Loki into cartoons, a character development that made no sense. And now the Russos finished Taika’s work by putting the final nail in Thor’s characterisation coffin by making him a parody of himself. And also, I am deeply dissapointed in the MCU for turning obesity into a joke. “Look, a fat Thor, how funny, ha-ha.” Oh, and let’s not forget that apparently panic attacks are comedy gold as well. Thor is not this cartoon comic relief and I will deny anything Thor related post-AOU until my dying day.
They fucking screwed Banner in much the same way. They turned him into a buffon and a comic relief.
I actually had a feeling Steve would find a way back into the 40′s and settle down with Peggy. And even though I think that’s a perfect ending for him, to finally get what he wanted (because yeah Steggy is canon, Peggy is the love of Steve’s life, and Stucky and Stony are fanon, get it straight (badum-tss) people/ sincerely a Stony shipper), it raises way too many questions about the timelines. If Steve stayed with Peggy then wouldn’t that create a different timeline because even though a second Steve would still get woken from the ice in 70 years, there is Peggy and the husband and children she never had that she in the “normal” timeline already had. And if so then our Steve is in a different timeline so how tf did he end up in the “normal” timeline all those years later, like an old man. How did he swap timelines? Or does the Russos have another explanation for what happened with Steve’s time fiddling?
Tony’s death. I still haven’t cried about it because it’s so surreal. It’s like my heart mind won’t accept it. I love how they gave him the final line from the first Iron man movie as his last one ever, but it still.. yeah I can’t really go into it because I haven’t fully processed it yet. Joe Russo being a doctor in CATWS and now he was a survivor in group? Are we supposed to think it’s the same character? He didn’t act like it? Like what was that?
And for all of you complaining about how “Steve would never leave Bucky behind”, did you not catch on when Bucky said “I’m going to miss you”? I mean clearly Steve would not do something like this without talking it through with Bucky first and I can imagine Steve asked if Bucky wanted to do the same, and Bucky refusing. He has suffered way more trauma than Steve, plus a dude with a metal arm in the forties? Schyeah, no. And yeah, Steve did say to Sam that he “got to thinking” or something like that, like the decision was made when he was already back there, but maybe that’s just something he says to Sam. You don’t think Sam would feel hurt or left out if he found out Steve had planned on doing this without telling him? And Bucky fucking knew. Or else he wouldn’t have told Sam to “Come on, go on” to go over to Steve, otherwise Bucky would have fucking gone first. He wasn’t surprised. So either they talked about it beforehand, or they didn’t because they didn’t have to, but Bucky knew.
And lastly my thoughts on the time line conundrum: So let’s call the standard timeline timeline 1, and our original Steve for Steve 1. So Steve 1 goes back in time to be with Peggy, creating Timeline 2 (so the Sam and Bucky he goes to visit shouldn’t be Timeline 1 Sam and Bucky but Timeline 2 Sam and Bucky, but somehow he skipped?), how does this work when Steve 2 gets brought back from the ice and goes to find Peggy, who in this timeline is married to Steve 1? And then when Steve 2 inevitably finds himself in the same Endgame scenario as Steve 1 had done, he will go back in time in Timeline 2. Will that create a Timeline 3 and so on and so forth to eternity? Or will he find himself a.k.a Steve 1 already there with Peggy at the moment where Timeline 1 broke off into Timeline 2?... This is giving me a headache and needs it’s own individual post..
Okay now let’s get to the good stuff
I love  my blue queen. Nebula is just amazing. And I love how they brought Gamora back because this Gamora who hadn’t left Thanos and joined the GOTG yet will just bring so much to the next GOTG movie and I am HERE FOR IT.
The scene where everyone came back. Do I need to say more? Best fucking scene in the entire MCU. I cried like full on ugly crying, with the noises and shaking and “fuckfuckfuck what is going on onscreen, everything is blurry!” So powerful.
Our all female attack group to help Danvers get through the masses of alien scum (hell yeah, I’m biased). My heart literally exploded into sunshine and rainbows.
 This deserves two bulletpoints. The female badassery!
Steve-motherfucking-Rogers picking up Mjölnir. Steve-motherfucking-Rogers is hella worthy.
The cinematography is just insane.
How wellmade the scenes in 2012 were? All the new scenes and angles we got to see and just, wow.
They managed to keep all these different timelines, stories and characters in time with each other in a way that it didn’t feel scattered and it all made sense.
Peter being a flailing potato teenager when he came back and the look  on Tony’s face.
Morgan Stark.
Stan Lee’s cameo.
Tony getting some closure with Howard.
Pepper Potts kicking ass and taking names in her own suit.
Rocket being a sassmaster (as well as Nebula “Watch out. There’s an idiot on the landsite.”)
The reconcileation between Cap and Tony. (Still lamenting the absence of the hug we all deserved but hey, what u gonna do?)
Valkyrie on her fucking winged horse, oh my fucking god I think the last hetero in me went belly up at that moment.
Carol- fucking- Danvers.
Frigga.
Tony checking out Steve’s ass. “That is America’s ass”
The Steve x Steve fight? New kink activated, just saying.
I’m sure there are more points and I will update this when I think of them, but this is what I got so far. And even though there’s a lot that pissed me off I am still very much happy with it and just in awe. I’m sad but.. yeah this was a good ending.

do you think toni and rhodey celebrate their anniversary? do you think they even remember when it is, or do they take turns choosing a random date sometime every autumn (which is probably around when they met) to surprise each other with flowers and cuddlefests and fancy candlelit dinners and paintball or however these nerds celebrate
+CAn you imagine toni and rhodey celebrating their 5, 10, 15+ year anniversaries with candle-lit dinners, expensive alcohol, flowers, gifts, CUDDLES, etc etc like i bet they both love to make a huge fuss over it and even their regular anniversaries are super sappy bECAUSE THEY LOVE AND CARE FOR EACH OTHER SO MUCH SDKJFH (also bucky and steve hear about it and get hella jelly)
~~~~~~~~~
I got two asks about this and I, unfortunately, didn’t realize it until now.  That being said I’m gonna hopefully do justice to them both even if my little fill mutated a bit.
So. Anniversaries.
This is officially a Thing(TM) with Toni and Rhodey.
They know the exact date they met for the first time because it’s immortalized in print (Stark Heiress Involved in Drunken Brawl) and because it’s one of the days that changed their lives forever.
So that also makes it one of the few anniversaries that Toni can remember on her own.
Rhodey normally requests leave during that week way ahead of time and Pepper’s mostly stopped scheduling things for Toni then too.  And even then JARVIS always makes sure to remind Toni about a week or so ahead of time each year anyways so she can make preparations or clear her schedule for the day or whatever.
There’s been a few near misses and a few last minute arrivals and day early/late celebrations but each year Toni and Rhodey make an effort to spend that day together if at all possible.  They also trade off responsibilities about entertainment and plans as they go.  One of Toni’s years resulted in a heart shaped scar on Rhodey’s lower back after a trip to Milan.  One of Rhodey’s years ended up with them spending a rather intimate weekend in jail and Rhodey with a mental block and a severe case of denial as to the existence of the entire state of Delaware.
The year they all manage to come together as a team with Bucky safely in the Tower just so happens to be Rhodey’s year and since he’s got a lot more free time now than he used to, and because he’s not so secretly a giant fucking troll, he decides to go full on date night style.
So he has JARVIS tell Toni to “dress to impress and baby girl I’m talking red carpet level here” and to meet him on the common floor at 7 sharp, which is, by complete coincidence Rhodey swears, also the time the others will be congregating for dinner.
He shows up to the common floor at a minute or two after since he knows Toni’ll be at least five minutes late no matter what.  He’s dressed to the nines in a crisp three piece suit with a crimson tie and holding a chocolate bouquet in one hand because he knows how Toni feels about regular cut flowers and a small gift box in the other.
He makes his way towards the dinning room where the team’s gathered and Clint and Sam both shoot out an impressed whistle when they see him as the others call out their greetings.
“Looking good my man,” Sam grins at him.  “Hot date?  And if she’s got you looking that sharp does she have a sister?”
“Sorry buddy,” Rhodey tells him smugly, “she’s an only child and I ain’t up for sharing tonight.”
“That’s cold Rhodes.” Sam quips with a mock frown.  “Ice cold.”
Before he can say anything else he hears the ding of the elevator and he turns enough so that he’ll be able to see the door and the looks on Steve and Barnes’ faces.
Cause he knows it’s gonna be good.
There’s the familiar sound of Toni’s heels on tile and then suddenly she’s there.  The room goes quiet and Rhodey sees Steve’s face flush even as Barnes’ goes tense all over.
Honestly though, he can’t really blame them.
Hair swept up with pieces left to fall tantalizingly around her face and neck, eyes done in a smokey catlike look and lips as crimson as the dress she’s wearing, Rhodey’s easily able to admit that Toni looks ... divine.
He’s aware that he’s more than a bit biased too but still.
The dress itself is one he hasn’t seen yet.  It’s slit indecently high on both sides so that it shows teasing glimpses of stocking clad thighs.  It’s also molded lovingly to every curve she has.
Hell Rhodey isn’t even sure if it really qualifies as a dress because that thing?
That thing is a fucking promise.
Granted it’s a promise that neither of them want to even consider keeping but he had said red carpet and Toni, as always, has gone above and beyond.
If Sam’s soft ‘shit’ and Clint’s hissed out breath alongside Thor’s appreciative grin and Steve and Barnes’ ... everything is anything to go by then he’s not the only one who thinks so.  Hell even Natasha looks approving and Rhodey’s pretty sure Bruce is blushing.
“Looking otherworldly as always baby girl,” Rhodey tells her
“This old rag?” Toni purrs as she sweeps a hand down her side, eyes heavy lidded but sparkling with a warmth that makes Rhodey grin back helplessly because goddamnit he really does love her, “It’s just something I threw on gumdrop.”
“You could throw me on anytime Tin Girl,” Clint leers only to flinch away from Natasha like he’s expecting to be smacked like he normally is.  Only it doesn’t happen.
“Agreed.”  Natasha says instead and Steve abruptly chokes on the glass of water he’s been almost desperately drinking.
Toni laughs as she saunters across the room until she’s standing by Rhodey’s side, a small gift box clutched in her left hand.
“Got you something sugar britches.” Toni tells him as she holds out her box.
“You know you don’t have to baby girl.” Rhodey reminds her even as he hands her the bouquet and they trade gifts.  “I tell you that every year.”
“And yet,” Toni sighs, “every year we both do it anyways so you might as well just accept it.”
Toni got him a War Machine tie pin, an exquisitely crafted thing that probably cost more than he wants to think about.  He clips it into place with a smile though cause it’s just the kind of thing she knows he gets a kick out of.
From the soft look on her face and the way she immediately shuffles her bouquet around and reaches up to take out the earrings she’s already wearing the gold chain and feather earrings he brought her must be a hit too so he figures they’re even.
“You ready to head out?”  He asks her once she’s settled again, bouquet in one hand and jewelry box with the old earrings tucked safely into a nook on the wall.  “I’ve got two tickets to something special and then reservations at Masa and then I’m thinking dancing before we bring it back here.”
 “What’s ah, what’s the special occasion?”  Bruce asks.
“It’s our anniversary.”  Rhodey says promptly, proudly.  There’s a soft crunching noise to his left but he doesn’t bother to look.  He’s pretty sure it’s just Barnes wrecking another chair or something.  Or Steve.
Honestly.  Him and Steve both are fucking hopeless.
“Yeah,” Toni smiles, that soft, warm thing she only rarely lets herself show.  The smile he fell in love with when she was fifteen and so goddamn skittish that just looking at her broke his heart.  The smile that represents everything he wants to protect.  “Today, more years ago than I’m going to admit to right now so shut it Feather-face, Rhodey broke an asshole’s nose and defended my ... dubious honor.”
“He deserved it and honestly I should have broke more than his nose.”  Even after all these years he still routinely has to check the urge to hunt Stone down and kick his ass all over again.
“You were dashing and manly and I was suitably impressed.”  Toni reassures him with a pat on the shoulder.
“You laughed.”  Rhodey reminds her with a small scowl.  “I thought I was gonna have to take you to the hospital.”
“I was fine and it all worked out in the end.” Toni smiles.  “I got you out of it so I think I actually came out ahead on that one to be honest.”
Rhodey just tugs her closer to his side, presses a kiss to her forehead, and grins because he pretty much feels the same way.
“Alright guys,” he finally calls to the others as he steers Toni back out of the room with a hand on her lower back, “we’re gone.  Don’t wait up.”
There’s a chorus of well wishing and goodbyes as Toni tosses up a hand too and lets herself be guided away.
Their night out’s great.  Rhodey’s procured two tickets to an exclusive movie premier Toni actually enjoys.  They go to Masa and eat ridiculously expensive and delicious sushi.  Afterwards they go to a vintage electronics show and get ice cream at a gourmet parlor before going dancing.  They’re flushed and happy by the time they get back into the car to head back to the Tower in the early mourning hours.
Toni falls asleep on his shoulder on the ride home and Rhodey just sits there with her pressed up against his side.  It’s hard for him to believe he has her in his life sometimes, his best friend, his platonic soulmate, and all the other categories Toni fills in his life that he never knew were empty until she took them as her own.
He loves her so much.
When they finally arrive Rhodey gets out of the car with Toni’s heels dangling from his fingers.
He’s not surprised when the elevator opens and Steve and Barnes are there, looking vaguely guilty and blank faced by turns.
Instead he just shakes his head at them and reaches in to scoop her up into a bridal hold.  He tucks her close to his chest and carries her into the elevator where the other two are waiting.
Toni hums, presses her face closer to his neck, but otherwise doesn’t wake up.
Steve and Barnes haven’t taken their eyes off of her since Rhodey pulled her out of the car.  They’re tense, hands clenched at their sides, and so obviously jealous that Rhodey’s surprised they can stand still.
“How’d you two meet?”  It’s, surprisingly enough, Barnes who asks the question.
“At MIT,” Rhodey says softly as he stares down at Toni, careful not to wake her, “She was fifteen and she was so goddamn small, all big eyes and wild hair and more brains than anyone could handle.  And I’d heard of her of course but our paths had never crossed.  Then one day there I was, going to class, and I hear screaming.  And there she was, this tiny little thing just wailing on this guy.  I pulled her off of him, tried to figure out what was going on.  But then he started running his mouth and her shirt was ripped and I just ... I knew.  So I beat his ass like the piece of shit he was for what he tried to do to her.  We’ve been in each other’s lives ever since.”
There’s a harsh inhale from both sides of him and when he glances up and around he can see the way Steve and Barnes’ jaws are both clenched, how Steve’s eyes are dark with fury and Barnes’ face is hard and cold with deadly intent.
‘Right,’ Rhodey thinks, ‘I thought that’s how it was but now, now I know.’
“I’m always gonna be there for her you know?”  Rhodey stares straight ahead as he speaks.  “I’m always gonna have her back no matter what.  No matter who I’ve got to fight.  No matter who I’ve got to go through.  I won’t ... I won’t let her be hurt if I can help it.  She’s been hurt enough.”
The elevator dings at the penthouse, JARVIS having bypassed all other floors to take him and Toni straight home.
Rhodey steps out and turns, keeps the other two from following him out, Toni still cradled in his arms.
“I’ll cut my way right through the next one to fucking try if I have to.”  Rhodey tells them as he looks between Steve and Barnes.  “No matter who they are.”
He holds eye contact with each of them long enough that he’s sure they both understand his meaning and then he takes a step back and lets the elevator doors close on them.
He knows JARVIS will keep them out of the penthouse for the next day or so until Toni goes down or invites anyone else up.
“Jealous fuckers,” he mumbles as he moves towards the bedroom.
“Indeed.” JARVIS agrees softly.  “But, perhaps, one day they’ll overcome that shortcoming long enough to take notice of what’s right in front of them.”
“Maybe.”  Rhodey agrees.  “Doesn’t mean I’m gonna make it easy on them.  Anyone who isn’t willing to fight for her doesn’t deserve her.”
“Agreed.”  JARVIS says.  “Agreed.”
Kelley Reviews: Avengers Infinity War
Tumblr media
Hello and welcome to my first official review! I will be doing both book and movie reviews on this blog as well as maybe an occasional website or album review. The style in which I will be reviewing is basically what I think worked, what didn’t work, and how I think they could have done better and/or theories about the sequel if said work is part of a series. With that being said, there will be SPOILERS in this review!!! If you haven’t seen the movie, see it, then come back. So without further ado, here is what I thought of Avengers: Infinity War.
Getting right into it, this movie was highly anticipated by the world and by me. My friends and I drove an hour away to see it on opening night because it was sold out in College Station and had been sold out for weeks (before it was even released!). So I will say that I am a bit biased because I love Marvel movies and have seen and loved every single one of them (with obvious exceptions like the 2008 Incredible Hulk, but, seeing as they don’t even use the same actor we can all take a blind eye to that mess). All this being said, let’s get in to the fun part of this review—what I liked about it.
WHAT WORKED
Character. Character, character, character. This has always been one of Marvel’s strengths and they did not disappoint. Building on every little detail from they’re previous works; they had an amazing cast of heroes lined up for this movie. I’ve got to admit that going in, my expectations were that this movie would be a complete mess due to how many characters they would have to juggle, but I was pleasantly surprised by how masterfully they handled their humungous cast. I liked that they did groupings, similar to how Stranger Things S2 strengthened its characters with groupings, and similar to what Marvel did in Civil War. They paired up characters we haven’t seen together before to give us a new view of them then we’ve seen previously. For instance, we finally get to see Dr. Strange interact with some of the main crew aside from his cameo in Ragnarok. Pairing his narcissistic personality with the equally hotheaded Tony Stark and then throwing Peter Parker into the mix to give Tony something to care about was a great move. Also I feel like Tony Stark as a character is the strongest person. So much has happened to him from the first iron man, so much pain and loss that I feel a bit stressed out every time something new is added onto that. Admittedly, the Thor and Rocket pairing could have been a bit better but it was still entertaining nonetheless.
I’ll also take a brief moment to recognize and appreciate Thanos. Marvel has been criticized in the past for having weak villains but the writers put extra care into giving us Thanos’ back story and motivation as to why he is the way he is. Again the genius of Marvel, because we already know all of the heroes and they need no big long-winded introduction, we get to spend that time on Thanos, which I think was the right move. Speaking of the right move, fun fact: the reason Thanos wanted to destroy half the universe in the comics was so that he could impress and get with a sexy skeletal persona of death. The storyline they made up for him in the movie was much less random and more believable so good job on that Marvel!
I also loved the way that they set everything up as being two years after Civil War and all that has happened to the team since then. The tension with Tony not wanting to call Steve and then seeing how the rest of the Avengers have all still been working together across the world despite everything that happened. I want to set aside a brief moment to appreciate the relationship we see between Wanda and Vision. I shipped them so hard in Civil War and I freaked out when I saw their scene together at the start of the movie. Good job Marvel, I appreciated that.
Another thing that really worked for me were their transitions and the plot. I know that plot is a pretty vague and all-encompassing term to use but I’ll explain. A quick word on the transitions, they were simple, words on the screen about which location we were entering. Short and sweet and it got the point across without interrupting the story—I’d say that’s a success. Now we’ll talk about the plot. When I say that the plot worked what I mean is that Marvel’s writers successfully balanced a huge cast of well-established characters, the introduction of a villain we’ve only seen glimpses of, and multiple new locations all without confusing the viewer and, in my opinion, every element was pulled off well. I’ll make this comparison. The Last Jedi, which came out last December, also had a large cast of characters and a lot was attempted with the plot: (Soft Spoilers ahead, skip this bit if you haven’t seen TLJ!) the Finn and Rose side adventure and love connection, the Kylo and Rey force connection, the Rey and Luke relationship, the growth arc for Poe, the final battle at the end. A lot happened and it felt rushed confusing and jumbled in a lot of the movie. In contrast, with just as many plot elements and more characters, Marvel managed to create a seamless story with great transitions.
WHAT DIDN’T WORK
Thor’s eye. If you saw Ragnarok (which I hope you did if you saw Infinity War), you obviously saw Thor’s eye get dramatically slashed out by Cate Blanchett aka Hela in the epic brother sister showdown at the end of the movie. At the start of Infinity War, we see Thor rocking his Odin-like eyepatch only to be quickly replaced with a new glass eye given to him by rocket. Why. Why would Marvel even go through the trouble of taking out his eye in the first place? I thought the new haircut and eye patch were a good look for him personally and the glass eye felt like a huge and useless copout. Speaking of Ragnarok, where was Tessa Thompson the Valkyrie? And Corg for that matter? They fly off with the rest of Asgard at the end and aren’t seen or heard from in Infinity war. Are we to assume that they died with the rest of the Asgardians in Thanos’ attack? After some digging, I found that Joe Russo, one of Infinity War’s co-directors, said that Valkyrie escaped with the other Asgardians on escape pods during the attack. It is likely that in the next Avengers movie, we will find out more about this.
Bruce Banner. Something weird was obviously up with the Hulk in this movie and to me that spells foreshadowing for the next movie. That I didn’t so much have a problem with, the thing that bothered me about Banner in this movie were some of his lines. Specifically the scene with him and Shuri. I get that she is supposed to look like this super genius with her advanced Wakandan knowledge but even in Black Panther it was hard to buy. Putting her up against Banner, who has been proven to be hella smart in previous movies and trying to make him seem dumb just fell flat came off as cringe-worthy and unbelievable.
Finally, the deaths. Suffice it to say—I’m not worried. It’s public knowledge that both Spiderman, the Black Panther, and the Guardians of the Galaxy have more movies lined up for the future. It is also known that Chris Evan’s has said that he is officially stepping down as Captain America after the next Avengers. So as far as who died, it might have been more effective to kill off some of the heroes who have been around a while. Make us sweat a little. For those reasons, the deaths were less effective for me emotionally because I didn’t believe them. Although I will say that when Peter Parker died, that shit was sad!
WHAT’S NEXT?
We already know that we are in for a Captain Marvel Introduction based on the end scene and I also predict that the Hulk is going to have an important role in the next movie given that he refused to come out of Banner in this one and we still don’t know why. Shuri, who we don’t really see what happened to her after she’s thrown from her lab, might become an interim Black Panther in her brother’s stead—this apparently happens pretty often in the comics. Black Widow also survived and I’m hoping that the writers will touch on her and Banner’s previous romance in the next movie. Honestly I think it will come down to Dr. Strange. Yes he disintegrated but remember he did say that there was only one way that everything would turn out alright—this has got to be the way. Maybe at the end of the next movie we will come back to when Strange was sitting on the rock with the time stone and this whole thing was his vision of how Thanos won but was ultimately defeated and then he opens his eyes and is like “alright, let’s do this.” Sort of like a Twilight Breaking Dawn part two kind of ending.
 Overall, I loved this movie. Marvel’s writers never cease to surprise and amaze me. It was epic throughout the entire movie and I cannot wait to see the next one. Thanks for checking out my blog. I’d love to hear your take on the movie and what you think will happen in the next Avengers!
