Some highlights - from Max’s latest podcast on Spielplatz - part 1 (NB: they recorded this podcast last year before the release of Matrix Resurrections)
Why he (still) likes to hang out in video rental store (okay… DVD rental 😜):
Max: I go there because you can search for films that you wouldn't see or wouldn't get online. On the other hand, I think it's great to have a place where you can talk about your passion. They're experts in the field and I've known them my whole life. It's like a hometown, you can say. Unfortunately, it's dying out - renting and meeting and talking about films. I still think it's a great place and would definitely recommend it to people who don't know it. There is the Filmgalerie 451 on Invalidenstraße. Every now and then you try out something, get suggestions and watch films that you wouldn’t normally watch.
Why he doesn’t like attending red-carpet:
Max: OK. So on one hand I understand that I don't seem so present (on social media/press). At the beginning of my career, I felt like I was on the red carpet too much because I felt I had to be there somehow. My agent wished that she would get to know people or that we would get to know each other. You also do it out of politeness, because you have to be grateful that you are allowed to work in these productions. And I have noticed how difficult it is for me to remember names, let alone do justice to every individual situation. I didn't really enjoy it and therefore didn't see the point either. I quickly realized that I actually didn't like these public appearances. Unless they are necessary to promote the product or to help someone with it, and that's exactly what I still do.
The content was also very important to me, there are projects that I can fully support. It was often the case, but I also had experiences where I realized I don't really know why I had to make this film now. But it is also important as an experience, so that you can appreciate the other person again. I’ve been very lucky with directors, and I'm also relatively lazy in general, they actually approached me, wanted to see my talent and used it. This is also kind of my cautious way or I was brought up by my mother to always be decent and polite. If you have the basis of trust, then you can sometimes be a bit funnier, different and louder. But I’m rather cautious to begin with.
Max talks about his Sense8 audition in London:
Max: Yes, I was in London, just before that I was shooting a film in the Bavarian provinces, And then came the contrast in London, as I was getting out of the Tube, a car accident happened right in front of me. So I thought, okay, (this is) a clear sign. I went over to Warner Brothers and in some strange sterile room, to re-sign my non-disclosure agreement. And then meet the other leading actor, Miguel Ángel Silvestre.
And yes, it was all very exciting. Lana sat with back then still Andy and the writer Straczynski, the first thing I talked about was about a project I was doing with a friend, it was Kopfplatzen, who is now out here too. Just to give her a little understanding of what is important to me, what excites me and, of course, also wanted to impress a little. And yes, then we played a scene where I pick a safe. I think at the very beginning I unlocked my spine and stuff, she thought that was really great. Somehow I knew subconsciously that what I was doing was right, and then she tried out a lot with me, several versions and Andy sat on the couch and just nodded her head in approval and she worked with me and after that. Yeah, I also think because Tom Tykwer was involved in the project and he already knew me, that I had his vote. He said he'd always wanted to work with me and that made it even easier.
NB: one of the moderators is a big Freier Fall fan and he says Max’s performance there brings out a masculine softness that is very exciting and so rare to see - I find it such an apt description. Unfortunately, he didn’t ask Max about the sequel this time.
