Okay so Karn starts using it/its pronouns after they defeat the other inheritors, hear me out (no this is not just bc it is very gender to me and i use it/its shut up).

Okay so, it/its. You cannot look at that helmet and tell me that's not hardcore it/its swag right there. And like, c'mon, like the inheritors would care about something like gender so the pronouns are absolutely linked to common presentation instead of gender identity.

So, it/its fits the gender and the vibes. And it's a way for Karn to reclaim its personality--it spent, how many years, centuries, killing totem after totem hoping to be returned home? Years of shame, years of wearing that helmet, a lifetime of being an outcast. And it turns out all that killing was for nothing, they would never accept Karn as part of their family.

But that also means Karn can just... stop fulfilling their expectations. It can start acting on its own wishes and ideas, it can start living its own life. Its name, Karn--that's who it is. That's what it is. There is so much blood on its hands, so much unnecessary blood. Its family is what it is, and it can't change the past--so it won't change its name, either. Its name ties it back to everything that made it into who it is now.

But the pronouns? Pronouns don't bind you to family, but they very much can be a way to cut ties with your family--go against expectations, present as someone other than they knew, be addressed as someone other than they knew and claimed and controlled. No more "our brother" and "he, the outcast", but Karn, its own being, carving out a new existence for itself without murder and without a family that wants to destroy everything.

And it/its instead of they them bc helmet it/its swag.
