the people have spoken
so we start with light yagami. top of his school, great family, tons of friends right? well, it definitely looks that way. but if you look more in depth you start to see the cracks in his “perfect boy” persona. he goes to class, studies, and goes to cram school. we really don’t see him with any genuine friends and anyone he seems nice to he actually kinda hates in his inner monologue. the only time we see him hang out with people outside of school is during the bus jacking date and that one time he tried to find misa. it’s most likely intentional since he doesn’t think anyones as smart as him. he’s close with his family, but even then he’s playing the role as the golden child.for example, we are introduced to his mom via her asking him for his test scores, making small conversation, and then leaving him alone. she’s glad his scores are so high and compliments him, but doesn’t even ask about his day or anything. his dad works weird, late hours as a cop as well. he’s close to sayu, but pushes her away as the story goes on.
also, light is incredibly immature at the start of the story (and doesn’t really mature mainly because of the death note. as we all know, he developed a severe god complex and stop maturing mentally since he saw himself as this all powerful perfect diety who didn’t need to change his ideals and how he saw the world). in all fairness, he is around 16-17 when he received the death note. i think his beliefs are better summed up in Where Is The Justice than i could write. i fully believe that had he not received the death note he would have become a very respectable detective, but that is not his story.
to summarize, light is lonely, immature, and think he’s the smartest guy in the world.
until he meets L.
L Lawliet is a weird character. he doesn’t really trust anyone, is off putting to most people, and more importantly, knew light was kira even when evidence pointed otherwise.
it is a fucking delight to rewatch death note just to see L make light squirm. you realize all his weird tendencies were intentional. Light can’t take anything he says at word because L is always two steps ahead of him. i think it’s best shown in the phone scene, where light thinks he can get L’s true name (side note: i love how L’s real name is literally just L Lawliet. that’s so clever, he doesn’t have to worry about kira finding his true name, since he already knows it, kira just needs his last name but doesn’t think of asking because why would someone just be named L? it’s genius) and calls misa, then L reveals he has miss’s phone and fucking talks to light on it. then lights like “ok whatever he didn’t know misa has another.” AND L HAS THE SECOND PHONE TOO! he’s just an absolute genius.
additionally though, L is also very lonely. he doesn’t really have any friends and his only family is fucking watari, who i am sure kept him away from the other kids in the wammy house as a child so he could focus on detective work. he’s incredibly smart but he’s reached that level where nothing really satisfies his curiosity, which is why he takes on the kira case.
somehow along the way, kira and L become light and L, who are actually friends. they understand each other in a way no one has before. the yotsuba arc shows just how well they get along, even if they annoy each other. they aren’t lonely anymore. they have someone who understands thems.
once l dies, however, it’s clear just how much their relationship meant to light. even before they really became friends, their rivalry was amazing. L was the one thing keeping light in check and with him gone light goes completely off the rails. light does some things in the second half of the series (trusting people with the information that he is kira, falling for nears traps,killing takada, and letting mikami use the death note) that he wouldn’t have even considered in the beginning because of how risky it was.
and at the end of it all, it’s not misa or his father or ryuk he sees as he dies. it’s L.

Azcat’s Lawlight A/B/O fic rec list
Heat (🔥)  Mpreg(🫃🏻)
These aren’t in any particular order but these are my favorites
Treaty  🔥 🫃🏻
AnimeFanime
This is a three part fic and every part is golden truly. Beyond comes into play in the second installment and shakes things up in a whirlwind. I promise you wont be able to put it down.
When Great Britain and Japan come to an agreement on a major treaty between the two countries, there is a long standing requirement between the country's packs that must be upheld. A match between a high ranking or highly valued Alpha and Omega must be made between the countries as a sign of good faith. With all of the official nobility of age already mated in both countries, Great Britain selects an Alpha, the World's Greatest Detective as their representative. While the country of Japan, provides their best and brightest, the attractive son of the distinguished Chief of the NPA, Light Yagami.
Both L and Light are thrown in as reluctant participants. Each with their own secrets, personal challenges and life ambitions. Can they find a way to happily co-exist or will the obstacles they face prove too much to overcome?
Yours/Mine/Ours 🔥 🫃
AnimeFanime
L and Beyond an Alpha/Alpha couple are looking to add an Omega to their relationship. They both meet Light and quickly decide he is everything they have ever wanted.
“B…” He said solemnly as the other man looked on with amusement. “I really want one…now.”
Beyond let out a huff of laughter, reaching up to thread long, strong fingers through the other man’s hair, tugging slightly on the raven strands as he pulled L’s neck to the side, exposing his throat to him.
“Hmm…you talk about finding an Omega like it’s as easy as picking out a cake or deciding on dessert.”
 Making a Scene
Coprinus_atramentarius
L is a brat Light puts him back in his place what more it there to say?
“It’s my first time back here with an alpha,” L says. “I don’t want to start drama or get the rumor mill spinning.”
“Mm.” Light drops his chin on L’s shoulder and watches a few teenagers run through the foyer, ignorant of the scene just a few steps away. They’re in Watari’s office on the first floor with the doors open – a marginal risk for exposure, though so far they’ve been safe. “Well, the great L being the great Kira’s omega does make pretty good gossip."
(L starts being a brat when he and Light visit the Wammy House, so its up to his alpha to get to the real reason why L's so upset - using some *interesting* methods.)
In your Place
Coprinus_atramentarius
This is part of a series also where L tames Light with a firm hand and Light’s inner omega sings beautifully for it
Ide, Matsuda, and Aizawa ask L how he deals with Omegas; Light finds out the answer firsthand.
The Taming of Light Yagami 🔥
TrashKing
This is probably my current favorite because it includes L as a widowed father and he takes that role up uhh not so well. Light happens to love his children like his own though and this makes for some very sweet dynamics. The relationship between L and Light here is electric and spicy. Definitely cannot recommend this fic enough thinking about it makes me want to read it all over again.
For the first time since Naomi's death L is in love, desperately in love, with his assistant Light Yagami. But Light is unwilling to take things to the next level until L untangles his grief from Naomi's loss and mends his fractured relationships with the people left behind.

Keir's Fanfictions Masterpost: All Fics With Short Descriptions, Sorted by Fandom (+ Author's Commentary!)
Death Note
Top Five (WIP): AU where Light and Misa went to Wammy's alongside Near, Mello, and Matt. L asks them to help solve the Kira case, promising that whoever does it will be his successor.
Author's Comments: Very long, very complicated, but totally worth a read if you love high-action plots! Lots of little personal additions thrown in, including expanded shinigami lore and a heavy focus on the interworkings of the Yotsuba Group.
The Beatles
A Dove in the Rosebox: Based on cirilee's wonderful Octopus's Garden AU, former pirate captain turned colonial widow Yoko Ono invites the remainder of her old crew to New York to visit her. Some, of course, couldn't make it--her husband, John, or the sea witch Ethelein, a close companion of his. However, with the arrival of a mysterious and monstrous bird, she and her crew are forced to revisit Ethelein's prophecy, hoping they can make sense of it before it consumes them.
Author's Comments: My most cherished fanfiction, and the one that started my writing career! What's strange is that I never wrote down my interpretation of the Octopus's Garden AU, but this is all based on it. It may be a bit hard to understand, but I think there's a lot of wisdom hidden within it, if that makes sense. Colonial America meets a Yellow-Submarine inspired mermaid fantasy. I can't praise it enough, although I am VERY biased. (Ethelein is the siren name I made for Brian Epstein by the way, in case you were wondering).
Bread and Babies: Short and sweet one-shot about John Lennon baking bread. That's it. That's the fic, folks.
Author's commentary: It's bread. Yummy yummy.
The Walk On Trilogy Part 1: Digging a Hole and Drinking Wine: A troubled story of the alcoholic owner of a failing music shop, Richard Starkey. With his four kids and husband George to look after, he doesn't think he'll make it much longer before snapping and doing something awful to himself. Set in a pseudo-1980s Liverpool.
Author's Commentary: A lot of people seemed to really like this work, and I do to. To be honest, though, I could never fully realize my vision for the trilogy. This was written at a very weird point in my life? I might rewrite it some day, but for now, if you enjoy soul-crushing family-based angst with lots of substance abuse and dysfunctionality, enjoy!
The Walk On Trilogy Part 2: And Why Not You?: The continuing story of Walk On, this time from the perspective of Ritchie's son Jason. With his own dependency on adderall and recent theft charges, it seems Jason will fall down the same shitty rabbit hole as his father, left to let down everyone around him until he's gone. Unless, of course, his equally troubled coworker Julian can pull him out of his rut. Doubtful, but possible.
Author's commentary: I loved writing from Jason's perspective, and more Julian is always appreciated in my fics lol. Again, I don't consider this trilogy one of my best works, but I appreciate it for what it is. I will say... COVID happens at the end of this. This was sort of a coping mechanism for me at times, so it just wormed its way in lol. Also bonus points if you like the movie 'Wings of Desire' (also called Die Himmel Ueber Berlin, sorry I can't do the umlaut lol).
The Walk On Trilogy Part 3: Samsara Can Take a Day Off: The continuing story of Walk On, this time from George's perspective. Fate has finally forced him to confront his crumbling family and try to make things right, no matter how difficult it is for him.
Author's Commentary: I really don't remember a lot of this... again, it was at a very strange point in my life. I still love this series with all of my heart, but I can't really describe what happens in this. COVID becomes a more prominent theme, obviously, and the next stage of the story begins. It actually ended early... I was planning two more parts from Lee and Dhani's perspective, but I cut them to start Top Five. I still reccomend you check it out, if you want to! Just know, this isn't really Walk On as I envisioned it. If I ever decide to rewrite it, I'll let you know!
If you decide to check them out, enjoy! I appreciate it!

death note headcanons for father's day, why not:
L knew his birth father when he was very young but has no memories of him
young light feigned indifference to soichiro in order to get him to talk about cases at home
sayu on the other hand went through a phase of refusing to talk to him since he was always gone
when mello is stressed he pretends to talk to his father even though he never knew him
near never viewed roger as a father figure. he always accepted the fact he would never have that
misa was closer to her father than her mother

Like Father, Like Daughter
L Lawliet x daughter reader
Requested by: anonymous
Hi I love your fanfics and I was wondering if you could do a Death Note L with his daughter fic like where she is super smart and is with him while he is on the Kira case but L is super protective of her and also doesn’t want her to be around Light. Idk I just though it would be cute to see L with a little mini L😊💕
This is so cute! For the fact they are related to L, they will hold similar physical features to him, mainly just his hair though.
Please enjoy.
Tumblr media
Confusion painted the faces of the Task Force the day they went into work to find the small, raven haired girl who patted about quietly. Chef Yagami was the first to step in, ready to ask the small girl if she was lost as no one else should have been able to get inside the building. Wide [Eye colour] orbs glowing with light looked back at him, soft and gentle, warm with an intelligence behind them that surpassed many children her age.
Before he could ask anything, she turned on her heel and headed up to the main room. Bright light filled, her little taps of footsteps mixing with the soft humming of the electricals around the room. Though the confusion and surprise of the Task Force grew even more when the small girl went over to Ryusaki’s side and he turned to her, a hand moving and petting her dark locks that were almost an identical shade to his own. Even her hairstyle was similar with longish locks that only made her eyes stand out more.
“Huh? Who is this kid?” Matsuda questioned to no one in particular, more of thinking aloud than anything. Even Light was intrigued about this odd small child. They all approached,
“Um...Ryusaki. Who is this?” Soichiro asked, referring to the girl. Ryusaki looked over, dark eyes showing the tiniest of sparks in them.
“This is [False Name], my daughter.” Those words shot through everyone on the Task Force like bullets. L, the World’s Greatest Detective, had a child? He was a father? Such a thing sounded almost preposterous given how he would have been so busy and having a family seemed dangerous for someone like him. And yet, here was a child who was almost the spitting image of her father.
“[False Name] is an intelligent child, and I know that by keeping her close, I can protect her.” Of course Ryusaki was not going to hand over her proper name if his suspicions of Light being Kira were true. There was nothing in this building that had her proper name, all of that information was at Wammy’s House in England. Safe as it should be.
[Name] looked up at her father as he spoke before turning to the reports on the table, eyes scanning over them before picking one up and going back over to him, snatching his attention away from the Task Force. “Look. These deaths line up with this company’s rivals. Maybe they are connected?” She showed, pointing to the names and the other companies that they had worked for.
“Well done, [False Name].” He spoke, handing the paper to Soichiro, “Please take these and run a check on them. See if there are any connections mentioned.” Soichiro nodded and took the reports, going off to do as instructed. Ryusaki turned back to [Name], smiling lightly before petting her hair again, an act of praise and comfort that she enjoyed. The others moved and got to work, with Light sitting close to Ryusaki.
Without a moment of hesitation, he moved, holding [Name] by the sides and lifting her with ease, setting her on the other side of him, away from Light.
“Light, this may sound silly. But I do not want you anywhere near my daughter.” There was this light tone in his voice, mirrored in his eyes as well. It was not a side-off comment, it was almost an order. He wanted his daughter away from Light and has already discussed this to her before they arrived. She knew to stay away from Light Yagami and be careful around him. That, though, was more of his protective parental instincts rather than his mind and logic.
[Name] ensured that she was helpful around the place, often bringing the Task Force members drinks and snacks to help them focus and relax, as well as helping on with her input and suggestions. Each time Light got close to her, she moved away and always ensured she was never alone with him. Even she had to admit there was something off about him.
Light took a seat close to her, offering a nice smile to her in a way to show he was not a threat to her. [Name] only looked at him and moved away, scurrying to her father’s side who tossed Light a side glare. Light held his hands up in a defensive manner but Ryusaki held his glare until Light turned away then smiled at his daughter.
“Good girl.”

Lie to Me
https://archiveofourown.org/works/33943738
Summary: In an AU where L wins the Kira case and Light goes to prison instead of being executed, L gets it into his head that Light should become an executor: because that would see his need for justice and killing done.
Author’s Note: This is actually the first idea I had and first thing I started writing after I finished watching Death Note.I wasn’t sure I was comfortable sharing it with you guys. But I guess I am:)
L’s PoV
L was heading towards… a certain place after the Kira case had been closed for quite some time.
And why he was heading there, he wasn’t entirely sure. It wasn’t as if he owed Yagami Light anything…
Perhaps, L thought, as he now walked into the prison that housed the mass murderer, he was doing this because he wanted to believe if he ever got locked up, someone with his mind would be given a chance like this… or something much better than this idea.
But whatever the reason was, L was walking towards Light’s cell now, to offer him a deal: a deal that had been playing in the back of L’s mind for a long time, even while he’d also been trying to come up with any and all evidence to incarcerate Light.
Finally—after all sunlight faded away and the last seagull silenced itself—L was being led through the massive metal door that would lead him to Light. And L would be facing him by himself. Something that Watari and everyone at Wammy’s House had loudly protested, but L knew that to even get a twenty-seven percent chance that Light would listen to any of this, he would have to go it alone.
L had reassured everyone, of course, that Yagami Light wasn’t one for killing people without his favorite magical notebook. And he knew that he’d be watched on any and all available monitors like a hawk, which was fine.
The Wammy’s boys (Near, Mello, and Matt—perhaps Matt and Mello in particular) had tried to convince L to bring a bomb in with him—one that Light wouldn’t be able to activate on L quickly enough, if he got it away from him, because it was made out of new technologies that Light hadn’t had the benefit of seeing—that he could throw at Light if the man pulled a fast one on him, and then make a run for the door.
But as L thought that there was a thirty-seven percent chance that that would actually cause more harm for him than good, he’d decided to use his intellect here as he always did… and pray to any god that might exist that Light was off his game after these few years (even though that would make this incredibly boring).
L pushed the door open, and was met with the sight of a lot of orange, brown, and grays: dull, fall colors, that had lost any and all shine. Honestly, what had he even been expecting? Perhaps this had been a mistake…
“Well, if I haven’t earned a visit from the one and only Ryuzaki,” Light sang, looking up from the Bible he’d been reading, the moment L crossed over the threshold. And it didn’t escape L’s notice that Light didn’t call him “L”, which clearly meant that he wasn’t seeing this as a victory against him—as it clearly wasn’t that—but it also meant that Light was beyond bitter here. L wondered how that would make the rest of their interaction play out, as he crossed the room and sat in the table across from Light. “To what do I owe the pleasure? Are you here to finally tell me how good orange looks on me?” In some ways, he was perceptive as always, L supposed.
“While I would, perhaps, love to rub it in your face again, that I beat you—because yours surely was the best case that I have yet won,” and here L locked eyes with Light to remind him that he had won, and it would be foolish to think that he could try and turn the tables right now, “once of doing that was more than enough. Not everyone is as narcissistic as you are, Light. No… I’m here for… sympathetic reasons, oddly enough. And you don’t have to believe me about that, but it is the truth.” And it was clear Light must not have believed it for a second, because he’d scooched his chair back from L’s furiously, the moment the words had left his lips.
He’d moved the seat back, but hadn’t gone to stand up. And that was smart on his part—Light had always been so smart—because if he had, L had no doubt that, quite ironically, all sorts of police and guardsmen would be spilling in this very moment to be giving Light a lethal injection.
So, it seemed that even in prison—where so much was ripped away from one—of course, Yagami Light had found a way to hold onto his careful reactions. This was very good.
L could respect that.
“I don’t believe you!” Light hissed, as some of the old fire returned to the young man. And his pupils dilated, and there was certainly a maniac look to them, but no red.
And L was taken aback to find that he somehow missed the red.
“All you ever wanted was to solve the Kira case more than anything else! It was just another trophy to add to your case! The most impressive one of all, in fact! And you didn’t care who you had to throw under the bus to get there, or if you had to act like Kira himself to achieve your goals. So, why would you start caring now? Odds say that you don’t.”
L could have said something to that, like, “How funny it is, that you now start talking about odds, when I always thought that that was my forte,” he knew. But the truth was… he didn’t have the time for their game, even though it had once been his favorite one of all.
A new technology had just been unveiled that could recognize faces with seventy-five percent accuracy one-hundred thousand miles away. And L just knew that it was at once going to be nuclear warfare, if he didn’t get out there and explain why seventy-five percent still wasn’t accurate enough and would leave too many innocent civilians murdered in cold blood and destitute. So, if Light wasn’t going to be interested in the deal L had to offer him here, he really couldn’t care less.
As it was, he was missing tea time right now, anyway, and he quite liked tea time.
Examining his nails in a very bored manner, L continued on with, “Like I said, Yagami Light, you don’t have to believe me. But I have an idea… since we both once loved our game with each other so much, how about we play another one together right now? Give me one good reason as to why I should give you an opportunity, and shouldn’t leave you to rot her for eternity, like you so rightly deserve?”
Light seemed to withdraw into himself at that… and he looked so very small. And as he did, L found that maybe he was finally truly feeling the sympathy he’d told Light that he had from the onset here.
It must not have been easy, L imagined, dealing with the world’s greatest ice queen in the world, who lived behind such an impenetrable fortress.
Nor must it have been easy to try and look like you had something to gamble with, when everything had been taken away from you.
The gears were clearly turning in Yagami Light’s head now. And L wondered if when they were done spinning, if he would actually hear some sort of fantastical truth from the man, or another lie. Surely the latter, since if there was one thing Yagami Light didn’t do, it was tell the truth.
Finally, Light looked up at L with sorrowful eyes. And L imagined that everyone who was watching this scene unfold with him right now, was also waiting with bated breath to see what the serial killer would have to say.
“Did you know my father once tried to kill my cat, L?” Light asked.
And there was his name, “L”, again. So, Light clearly must have thought he could win this one. And L thought he must have been lying, since he was speaking of something so traumatic far too matter-of-factly right now.
But, then again… Light was calling Soichiro “father” as opposed to “dad” for once. And sometimes trauma victims did speak matter-of-factly to try and keep their emotions at bay.
Hmm… L tried not to give anything away here, but Light definitely have L wondering if he’d missed something important in the Kira investigation. And L didn’t know if that was good or not. He had asked for this—and perhaps had even wanted a battle he had chosen, as opposed to the one he now had to partake in for necessity—but was it really a good idea to have a battle of wills with Yagami Light again?
No matter what he thought, L knew the best thing was to try and play it all off, of course. “No, I was not aware of that, Kira. It didn’t come up in anything I researched about you in our time together. If this is true, I assume your family kept it under wraps to protect your father’s reputation? Do tell me about it.”
“Yep. That’s exactly it,” Light allowed, and he was looking at his forearms that rested on the table now, as if he was lost in thought. Lost in his memories, maybe more accurately. So, perhaps, there was some truth to all of this, after all.
L truly hadn’t come here expecting to feel anything for Yagami Light today, but he found he was doing exactly that, and he hated himself for it.
He would not again be the man on a rooftop, looking at who he believed to be his future killer with regret, as he heard bells ring in the distance. He would not.
“It was late one night… Dad was tired. And maybe a little drunk… This was the only cat we ever had, by the way. An orange furball that Sayu had begged that Mom and Father let us have. Eventually, they relented. Anything, for cute Sayu, of course. And I felt the same way. But… it had stomach problems, and hairballs all the time. Mom cleaned it up as best she could. I helped, too. But Father hated this about the thing.
“One night… I guess the stress of everything became too much for him, and he was chasing Aki, the cat, through the house, saying he was going to kill her, and was throwing coat-hangers at her… until Sayu and I intervened. But mainly it was me. I don’t know if it would have gone further than the coat-hangers, if Father’s two little kids hadn’t tried to stop him then, but…
“Anyway, Dad never had a psychotic break like that ever again, so we all just dropped it...”
The way Light had told the story… it mostly seemed true to L. And he hated that after once having said that there was never a time that Light told the truth, that he would now ven entertain that notion.
He also despised that he now thought it made some sense, then, that Yagami Light would go serial killer, since he’d had the trauma of seeing his father attack an animal… and seeing as how he couldn’t really get any help, as mental illness was so stigmatized in Japan.
But Light did not need to know any of these things from L, of course. All he needed to know was that he had passed the test.
And for Yagami Light, who had only ever wanted to get the best grades and be society’s greatest being—and to be a “god”—surely that would be enough.
“Light… what if we put your desire for justice—and death, to an extent—to practical use? What if you became an executor, instead of wasting away here?”
And the moment the words had left his mouth, L wished he could take them back. Because certainly Kira would object that he wasn’t a killer and never had been.
But instead, Light just dabbed at his eyes some—had he started crying?—and shook his head as if he were truly lost, “…If you think that’s the best thing for me to do… I guess I’ll do it. Clearly, I don’t know what’s right, and you’re wiser than I could ever be. So, when do I start?”
L meant to fill Light in then, that it wouldn’t be right away.
No. Some trust would have to be built first, before they let Kira anywhere near lethal ingredients or people he would put in the electric chair, of course.
But L couldn’t find the words.
He was, one, feeling too much guilt, somehow, by what had just transpired….
And two, finding himself almost aroused at the idea of Light wielding such power, but using it rightly this time.
“Watari will get you the information. He’ll be in touch.”
And L headed back through the large metal door, without another look towards Yagami Light.
He had once thought it held Light’s fate… but he was starting to realize that perhaps it held his own, too.
And if he was intelligent, he would never see the man again.
But had he ever truly been intelligent?
L had to ponder that now, when he knew without a shadow of a doubt… he would be seeing Kira again.

Q. 3, 5, 8-11, 20, 34, 37, 40, 42, 43, 60, 65, 70, 81, 82 & 87 for the OTP (lawlight?) questions please? <3
1. Who kissed who first?
Light kissed L first, as part of a scheme. And Light’s a good actor, sure, but he was a little more into it than he would like to admit. Meanwhile L was the first one to kiss Light with genuine feeling. That too was a calculated powerplay, but the feeling was still sincere.
2. What do they like the most about each other?
They’re big fucking sapiosexuals. Light writes real Byronic romanticism into all of L’s awkward features because his intelligence and ruthlessness make Light wet. L meanwhile wouldn’t care if Light was a bridge troll with twice the stank so long as he still had his voice. L loves his wit, his smarts, but he also loves the wicked fakeness in Light he can see straight through. It makes Light his own little secret because no one else notices.
3. Who tends to worry the most?
Light has back up plans A through Z-23. He’s always got a second strategy up his sleeve. He likes watching all his perfectly laid dominoes fall into place. L meanwhile has enough confidence in his intelligence that he assumes he will succeed first time and, if he doesn’t, that’s exciting and he thrills in the chance to wing it with real stakes.
4. Who is more inclined to be jealous or possessive?
Light is used to being the centre of attention. He likes having people fawn over him. L knows these people don’t interest Light at all, not really, but it still irritates him when they get too forward and Light smiles all cute. L likes to shut that down very quickly and Light sulks for a second before he revels in L being possessive.
Light, meanwhile, isn’t used to people expressing an attraction to L and it makes him seethe. “No, my L.” He grumbles plotting their demise. L often doubts the sincerity of people who show attraction to him. He’s not trying to be attractive after all. And, even if they are genuine, they’re dull so….
5. How do they resolve their arguments?
They don’t often sincerely disagree but if they do there are stages to an L/Light argument. First there’s the bitching and insulting, then there’s the elaborate backstabbing, then there’s the furious angry sex, then they actually sit down and talk like adults for 5 minutes. Once the issue is resolved they rinse, lather and repeat with something new.
6. Who is the most physically affectionate?
L doesn’t seem like a physical person but he likes to touch. He likes to feel close. He’ll stroke Light like a cat and Light will melt. Light sometimes hesitates to get physical.
7. Do they give each other nicknames?
They have a few epitaphs that are filled with admiration but nicknames? They usually only break them out when they’re having a covert fight in public or if they’re trying to have degrading sex.
8. What do they do when the other is stressed?
L rarely gets work stress. His stress is often more personally based. Light isn’t always quite sure how to reach him when he clams up but Light is nothing is not patient/stubborn. He’s always there when L is ready.
L likes to be proactive with Light stress. If he can solve Light’s problem by throwing money at it he won’t hesitate. Money is replaceable, Light is not. He’s also keen to strategize but sometimes Light is worked up over problems he’s inventing and L needs to call him on his bullshit. Which gets him the cold shoulder for a day before any thanks.
9. Thoughts on PDA(Public Displays of Affection)?
L would fuck Light in front of an audience if he got the all clear. Light meanwhile doesn’t enjoy PDA. He has too many considerations about how others are perceiving him and what it impacts to really relax. Exhibitionism though? Weeeeell that’s a little different. Sneaky fucking in public can be fun.
10. Thoughts on kids?
Light is not keen to have children. They don’t suit him. L has the Wammy’s extended family so he rarely sees the need for more family.
11. Thoughts on each other’s family?
Light loves Wammy’s and he gets very involved as Watari gets older. Light is the one who remembers to send gifts and congratulations for ever life event for the other orphans. L finds Light’s family a little pedantic but they’re harmless and playing nice with them keeps Light happy.
12. Favorite family member of their lover? (Example: Lover 1 enjoys Lover 2’s mother the most)
L will say Soichiro is his favourite because Light adores his father but secretly L likes Ryuk the most. He feels the most authentically connected to Light, knows the real him, and is the kind of creature L would choose to spend recreational time with.
Light will say Mello is his favourite and they’ll gossip like high school girls, send each other stupid presents, laugh like cats. But deep down Light thinks the most of Near. Near is harder to control or manipulate but Light sees more in Near he values and respects.
13. Who will punch someone out if they are rude to their partner?
Light doesn’t punch. If Light doesn’t like you it would be best to take out a life insurance policy. L meanwhile is petty as fuck. If someone insults Light, in a genuinely cruel way, L’s not above trashing their career and their credit score systematically.
14. Who loves kids more?
L is more at ease with random children. Light makes a good show of it but he’s internally quite uncomfortable. Light needs to bond with a specific child before he can really unwind. L is just used to an unending stream of orphans so he’s got chill big brother energy.
15. Who is the hopeless romantic?
They both love a romantic gesture. They’re both real drama queens. Light will go medieval about it “here are the hearts of your enemies” whereas L is more 1950s black and white movies about it “I bought us both plane tickets to Monaco, don’t pack a bag, you won’t need it”
16. Who is the one that sees the big picture, while the other focus’s on the small details?
They’re both very detailed focused. But L is more relaxed about what long term looks like. Light meanwhile will plan the next forty years if you leave him alone for 2hrs.
17. What is an inside joke they have?
Ryuk is one huge inside joke. They both communicate with Ryuk while other people are around in really sneaky ways and they’ll make comments about him to each other in front of people. |
“Go ask your other boyfriend, maybe he’ll say yes?” L will joke
“I’m so glad you’re home. The ghost and I used all the wifi while you were gone.” Light will say.
18. Do one of them sleep talk? If so, what do they say?
Light talks pure nonsense in his sleep. Including arguing that he’s awake when he’s sleep talking.

Hey luv!!🖤 Can I order a microfic for wammy's boys by taking their child trick-or-treating on Halloween with his parents? Hope you have a good time this Halloween! 👻
Hello My Darling Anon! I put a rush order on this one to get it ready in time for Halloween! I hope you have a good one as well!!!
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
“Come on Daddy! Let’s go!” The tiny child dressed all in black with the oversized cat ears and velvet tail dragging on the ground behind them tugged on L’s sleeve, trying with all their might to yank him towards the door. “If we wait much longer, there won’t be any candy left for me!”
L pressed his thumb to his lip, a smile growing beneath it as he looked at them lovingly. “I’m sure there will be no shortage of treats. It isn’t even dark yet.”
“Granddaaaad!” They whined at Watari, their huge greyish-blue eyes pleading up at him. “You’ll take me, won’t you?”
“Patience, child.” Watari’s grin widened under his moustache. “Your mother and father will take you in just a moment.”
“What about you Granddad? Aren’t you coming with us?”
“Someone has to stay here and hand out candy to the children that come here. We wouldn’t want them to be disappointed by trick-or-treating at an empty house.” He handed them a pumpkin-shaped pail before straightening the pointy cat ears.
“Just don’t give it all away, ok?”
“Little One, you will have plenty of candy of your own when we return home. There’s no need to be greedy.” L gently took their hand in his.
“They remind me of someone else when he was their age.” Watari patted L on the shoulder kindly.
“So you’re blaming genetics?” L smirked at him.
“I’m sorry I’m late!” Little One’s mother hurried into the foyer, also donning cat ears on top of her head. She squatted to be eye-level with her kitten and whispered, “Everything is ready for Daddy’s birthday party.”
“Even the cake?” Little One’s excitement rang out a little too loudly.
“Mhmm. Even the cake.” She stood up and took their hand, pumpkin pail dangling between them. She gave L a little wink, who had no doubt heard what they were planning. “Ready to go?”
“YES! I’ve been ready since this morning!” Little One pulled them both towards the door.
“Sounds like someone else I know.” She smiled playfully at L.
L sighed as they stepped into the cold night, together as a family. “Apparently I’ve made quite the reputation for myself.”
“That’s ok Daddy.” Little One squeezed his hand a little tighter. “I’ll share my treats with you.”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
“That’s it. Let’s have them.” Mello frowned down at the tiny biker that stood before him, leather pants and a tattoo of a dragon drawn in marker on his arm made them look even more like thier father.
“I wasn’t going to use them. I just wanted them, you know. In case.”
“Mells, are you shaking our kid down for their chocolate?”
“No, but I might have to do that later.” Mello’s scowl softened when he spoke to her. “Look what our little darling decided to bring trick-or-treating?” In Mello’s hand was a half-used can of shaving cream.
“Did you really think it’s ok to vandalize someone’s house?” Their mother asked sternly.
“Only if they don’t hand over the good candy.”
“That is not ok. Your mother and I taught you better than that.” Mello turned to his Love. “There’re some eggs in their pillow case, too.”
“I thought I bought more than what is in the refrigerator!” She held her hand out to them. “Give them over.”
“You don’t want that. They broke when they set down their treat bag.”
“And it ruined all my goodies.” They yelled angrily at their parents.
She sighed and looked to her husband. “We really raised a mini-Mello. What are we going to do?”
“I think you should-“
“Your mother wasn’t talking to you.”
She closed her eyes for a second to clear her head. “This is what we’re going to do. We’re going to go get you a clean pillowcase and we’re going to try this again. We’ll go door-to-door as a family. You’re too young to be going trick-or-treating alone anyway.”
“And tomorrow starts your grounding. Two weeks. No T.V, nno video games.” Mello doled out the punishment. “And I get half your chocolate.”
“HALF?!” They growled at their father before his eyes grew wide. Mello didn’t need to say anything. His kid knew he meant business. “That seems fair.”
“Now that’s settled. Let’s go. And I don’t want to catch you pulling something like this ever again, you got that?”
“I sure do. Sorry Dad.”
“You know that’s a bunch of crap, right? They’re just like you.”
“Yeah, I know.” Mello lowered his voice to keep the words between him and his wife, a smile making his scar even more beautiful. “Is it bad I’m a little proud of them?”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
“It’s alright sweetheart. Go knock on the door.”
The little vampire hugged their mother’s leg, peeking around the woman with wide eyes as they stared at the stranger’s door.
“There is nothing to be afraid of. Pumpkins are not frightening and the spiders and bats are merely decorations, made of plastic in some factory.” Near reassured his child the only way he knew how.
“But I’m scared.”
“That’s ok. Halloween can be scary, but if you’re really brave and go to the door, you can get candy.” She stroked her child’s hair, still clinging to her leg.
“What are you dressed up as?” Near asked his child, twisting his hair around his finger.
“I’m a vampire.” Their voice shook the response.
“Are you an actual vampire or is it pretend?”
“It’s pretend.”
“As are these decorations.” Near held his hand out to his child. “Now let’s not be frightened of something that is pretend. I will go with you if it will give you courage.”
The little vampire with the flaxen hair nodded at their father, taking his hand and stalking toward the door, cape pulled up over their nose. Near’s Love couldn’t help but giggle at the sight. They looked like Dracula from all the old movies.
Together, Near and his child walked up the porch steps, between the cotton cobwebs and glowing pumpkins, the baby vampire building courage with every step before ringing the doorbell.
The door opened and a kindly older woman smiled at them.
“Trick-or-treat.” The tiny vampire could barely speak the words.
“Oh, aren’t you adorable! Such a cute little vampire.” She plopped a handful of chocolates and lolllies into their pail before turning to Near. “And what are you supposed to be? A ghost?”
Near frowned at the woman. “I’m a detective. Thank you for the treats.”
*~*~*~*~*~*~**~*~*
“Alright, on our Trick-or-Treat bingo, we have skeletons, pumpkins, spider webs and bats all checked off.” Matt held the card in his hand, crossing out the words in purple marker as he read them aloud. “We need those eyes that are peeking in the bushes still…”
“And something inflatable. Oh and we need a house that is playing scary music.” The small Yoshi excitedly chimed up at their father. “Oh, this house has purple lights! Cross it off dad while I go to the door!”
“Haha, alright. Go get them. Make sure to say thank you!” Matt called after them before turning to his Love. “You did a damn good job on that costume.”
“Anything for my two favorite gamers.” She smiled proudly at him, never telling him it took her the last 6 months to perfect it.
“Mom! Dad! I got M&Ms and a Reese’s peanut butter cup! Your turn mom, cross it off.” Their face beamed from where Yoshi’s mouth should be. “Did I get Bingo yet?”
“You are one Milky Way away from getting candy Bingo.”
“And you need Orange Lights and you will have it on the decorations one.”
“Alright! I’m on it!” They ran to the next house, green and white tail waddling behind them as they hopped up the steps and knocked on the door.
“So what are we going to do when they win?”
“10pm pizza and scary movies until they fall asleep on the couch?” Matt grinned, proud of the prize at the end of the game he created. “I think they will love that.”
She smiled softly at him. “I think all three of us will love that.”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
“Hey Dad! Check me out!”
Beyond’s child bound towards him, rubber butcher’s knife sticking out of their head, red corn syrup running down their face with eyes ringed in black, which Beyond was not fond of. It reminded him too much of someone he had tried hard to forget.
“Wouldn’t you rather go as the murderer than the victim?” Beyond hated even the slightest hint of his offspring being weak, even if it was only a Halloween costume.
“I’m not a victim. I’m a scary undead dude.” The excitement fell from their face. “You’re no fun sometimes. You don’t know how much work it was to look like someone you’re not.”
B knew all too well how much effort that required.
“On second thought, I think you look quite scary.” Beyond’s compliment brought the smile back to their face. “I think you’re going to get a lot of candy this year.”
“I think so, too!” The sweet voice of the child’s mother announced her entrance into the room, standing at B’s side & whispering in his ear, “I hope you don’t mind I let him use that old stage makeup you have hidden in your drawer.”
Beyond fought back a frown. “Of course not. Why would I have a use for that? I don’t even remember why I have that.”
“Mom? Dad? Can we get going please? I don’t want all the blood to dry up before I can collect my candy.”
“Alright, let’s go.” Beyond mustered a smile, letting a bit of the corn syrup drip on his finger, sucking the sweetness from his nails. “It’s terrible once the blood dries on.”

As an Official OC Supporter™, may I request ♦ (quirks/hobbies), ☯ (likes/dislikes) and ▼(childhood) headcanons for Analise? ^-^
Thank you so much for the ask and interest in Ana!
~~~~
Quirks/hobbies:
-Analise tends to work a lot, so whenever she doesn't have to work she tries to enjoy her free time
-whether it's doing something relaxing like art, to reading or even trying out some writing. Though she isn't too sure of her writing and doesn't do it too much.
-some fun things she likes to do with is to write out random things on sticky notes and either sticking them places for L to see or 'casually' slides them over to him to get his attention. Varies from random little poems to making small sketches/doodles, or just even just putting whatever comes to mind. Just depends on how bored she is and whatever is on her mind.
-She loves listening to music, and her music taste is super mixed and she likes most types of genres. She likes to him or tap her fingers along to the music. Music also helps her a lot when she's working or relaxing, just usually has it playing faintly in the background
-Whenever she's bored or kinda zoning out or whatnot, she tends to play with her hair. Whether it's just twirling or messing with it mindlessly while she thinks.
-Loves going out with L whenever they both aren't busy, but one of her favorite things to do when they stay in (besides eating with him) is watching shows or movies, especially if they are rated poorly. I feel like they'd both just enjoy watching things and making jokes about things, especially horror movies since I think they'd joke about things the characters do.
"Did they just seperate?"
"I think they did.. How unfortunate would it be if there was a murderer out there with them" Ana would reply with a playful smirk as she glanced over at the detective who had a smile tugging at his lips, his dark gaze showing signs of amusement.
"That would be truly Unfortunate."
~~~~
Likes/Dislikes
-She's someone who tries to have a somewhat positive looks on things, especially when it comes to being a detective and having to see how harsh reality can be for some people. She's pretty empathetic for the most part, Watari sometimes calls her 'The heart to L's Brain'.
-So despite how tough she has to be on the job, she tries to enjoy as much as she can. Especially since she felt like she had to grow up fast to get to her current point in life, but she doesn't regret her decisions. It just gives her more of an appreciation for the small things if anything.
-Before meeting L she's had a bit of a sweet tooth and enjoyed sweets, but after gaining his trust and slowly becoming the friend, he has definitely become an influence on her sweet tooth and her love for fruit.
-Her favorite fruits are strawberries, grapes, and most berries. She enjoys melon/cantaloupe a lot though. Her favorite type of snack is cheesecake or strawberry shortcakes, or just most cakes in general. Also a big fan of crepes. Also an avid enjoyer of chocolate, enjoys mainly milk and white and not too much of a fan for dark but will eat it if there's nothing else.
-She loves a good sense of humour, which happens to be an aspect she enjoys about L, even when he isn't necessarily trying to be funny, but when he is avidly trying to make her laugh it works for the most part. Even if it leaves her giggling and trying to act annoyed that he succeeded. In return she also loves making him and Watari laugh and smile, wanting to brighten up their day at least a little if she's able to.
-Big fan of soft things. Soft blankets? She has a couple, at least having one or two over her main comfortor. Soft fuzzy pajama pants? Oh hell yeah, she has a couple. Animals? It feels as if it physically pains her sometimes when she's unable to go and let a cat or dog or most animals.
-She just likes feeling like she's helpful and doing something that makes a difference, even if small. L might do his job as a hobby, and even though she understands that sentiment and doesn't try to force to change his mindset, she became a detective to help others in some way, bring out some sort of justice, and to make her parents proud.
~~~~
Childhood
-In comparison to others, she knows she had it easy and was lucky growing up. Two loving parents, had the privilege of having a butler helping with things at home.
-She even had the chance to go to Wammy's house and learn there with the other gifted children there.
-Yet when she looks at herself in comparison to the other kids there, she feels pretty out of place. She tried to be friendly with them for the most part but never got close with anyone there, but she did her best to have a good time with others.
-She preferred being alone for the most part, or with the odd looking boy she met there. Whether it was sitting in the library and reading, playing chess or a game similar to that, or walking around outside. Something that she still would prefer now that she's older.
-Unlike other girls and kids her age growing up, her 'idols' and inspirations for her to work harder to be a detective was well, other detectives. Whether it was her modest father, fictional ones like Sherlock Holmes, and even the up and coming great detective L.
-Always been fascinated and true crime, and because of her parent's occupations it was easy to see why.
-Her parents always tried to tell her to take it easy, wanting her to enjoy being young and not work so hard constantly. She's stubborn, but tried her best to do what they wanted. She'd attend school events and whatever else her mother thought would be fun.
-she's always been a fan of the moon and stars, thinking back to fairy tales and how wishing upon stars seem to help those in the stories and would do so herself. She still does sometimes when she really wants something to go well, but wouldn't outwardly show or talk about it.
-She mainly just enjoyed (and still does) sitting and staring up at the sky and moon, especially with L, and trying to find constellations or make out their own shapes with them.
@lawlightweek Week Day 7: Renewal
The orphanage was smaller than Light had expected. Truth be told, he didn’t know what he’d expected. L had given him so little to go on. That was fair. Light would argue that was the only thing about this that was fair.
“We’ll do the tour later,” L informed him as they entered Wammy’s House. “You’re jet lagged, you should sleep.”
“I’m fine,” Light said.
That was a lie and they both knew it. Light was confused. He was frustrated, and relieved, and scared at the same time. He was not fine.
“It’s better if you rest before you meet anyone,” L went on. “Trust me, you’re going to want to be at the top of your game when you do.”
“If you say so,” Light shrugged. If there was anything he’d gotten used to over the past few days it was going with what L told him. Right now, L’s word was the only thing he had.
“Our rooms are this way,” L lead him down the empty hall.
The house felt like something Light would have read about in one of those British novels Sayu had briefly been obsessed with. From the vine covered walls, to the stain glass windows, stepping inside felt like he’s stepped into another century.
It was almost comforting to see all of the computers and lack of decor that L’s room was furnished with. Light’s room was connected to L’s through an adjoining door. It didn’t look like it locked.
That was fitting for a convict. Light just didn’t understand what kind of prison this was supposed to be.
L hadn’t sent him to jail. Instead, he’d informed Light that he was going to be accompanying him back to England and that from now on he wanted Light to assist in the education of his successors. Light thought L was going to give him to the gallows, instead he’d given him a job.
Nothing here made any sense.
“I’m Kira.”
For a moment, Light didn’t know if L could heard him over the pounding for the rain. Then L looked at him and that expression silenced any doubts. Light could count on his hand the amount of times he’d seen this man genuinely shocked. This was one of them.
“Why?”
Why tell him this? Why confess now? Why when they both knew he was so close to winning—to actually winning after so long?
Light felt a smile break across his lips. It was the same smile he’d worn for every little victory he’d been able to succeed over this mental war. It was Kira’s smile.
“Thanks,” he said out loud.
Because even if he was surrendering, even if he was letting go of everything he’d worked so hard for, at least he’d be able to keep this with him. At least he’d know that at the very end, he’d stumped L.
That felt close enough to winning for him.
Light was sitting in what he had to assume functioned as L’s office. In the back of his mind, he’d wondered if L had instructed the staff here to add a second desk for him. It didn’t make sense for there to be two, Light was certain that whatever was going on with him was the first this had ever happened.
In front of him was the computer L had given him.
“You can’t bring any personal belongings with you,” L had said before they left.
“Of course,” Light had replied as if he understood any part of what was going on.
Light had just finished the lesson plan L had tasked him with creating. He had a few days before he was supposed to start teaching, but L had stressed that it was important for him to prepare since the children he’d be working with were high maintenance.
Well, no, that wasn’t right. L had briefly mentioned it. Watatri had been the one to give Light a solemn expression and tell him that this was going to be a very challenging experience. L hadn’t offered much guidance.
“Are you done?” L’s voice broke through Light’s thoughts.
Light turned his gaze to him.
“You look absent minded,” L explained the questioning. “I assume that means you’re either finished or bored.”
“Actually, I was thinking,” Light started.
“I’d be concerned if you weren’t.” L closed his own computer and focused his attention on Light.
After everything they’d been through, Light would have liked to think that he could read L. It was difficult task, but there were times when Light was certain that he knew what was going on in the detective’s head. He wouldn’t have gotten as far if he couldn’t understand his opponent.
Only, since the moment Light had waved the white flag he had no idea what game L was playing. Every time he’s reached for answers, L had brushed him off. It was infuriating, but he didn’t know how to get mad at the man who had made the choice to keep him alive.
“You’re concerned about the amount of trust I’ve placed in you.” L apparently had no trouble reading him.
“This place is important to you,” Light said. “These kids are your heirs—and even if they weren’t, Ryuzaki, they’re kids for fuck sake.”
“And?” L knew what he was thinking. Of course he was going to make Light say it.
“And I’m a murderer.”
“Yes,” L seemed disinterested now. That pissed Light off.
“How do you know this isn’t part of my plan?” He demanded. “How do you know you’re safe right now?”
“Well, the fact that we’re having this conversation goes at the top of the list,” L answered.
“L, I don’t know what’s going on!”
Light never called him that. He always used the alias. Everyone did.
“While you’re here you’re under twenty-four hour surveillance,” L informed him. “Everyone is, it’s safer that way.”
Light didn’t ask what that meant. That was a conversion for another time—another time that he shouldn’t be alive to get. “Still.”
“If you try to hurt anyone in this building, I will kill you.”
L’s voice held no emotion. His eyes were the same cloudy gray that the sky had been the day Light gave up everything so he wouldn’t have to give up the only thing that mattered. It grounded him. Knowing that L wouldn’t hesitate grounded him.
“Is that what you need to hear?”
Light nodded.
“Well,” L sighed. “Now that we have that out of the way, let me see your lesson plan.”
Light hadn’t realized the building had a cell until now. He sat behind the metal bars, on the other side was L and the rest of the task force. He looked at his father’s face once. The disappointment there should have cut through him, but Light just felt numb right now.
He was just going through the motions he’d already calculated. Honestly, he just wanted this part to be over already. He wanted all of it to be over.
“The thirteen day rule is fake,” Light told the group and the running camera. “I had a shinigami add it so I would have an alibi.”
“Who is the second Kira?” L asked.
“There is no second Kira,” Light told the only lie he’d worked into his story.
He’d made Misa give up her Death Note and all memories of being Kira. Then he broke her heart. She’d stay away from him and anything having to do with Kira now. That was the only way he’d be able to ensure that Rem didn’t kill either him or L.
“There is another notebook,” Light said. “I made other people use it with my notebook. When their time ran out I gave it to someone else.”
“And the evidence we found in Misa Amane’s apartment?” L asked.
“Was planted,” Light lied. “By me.”
“You framed an innocent girl?” It was surprising that it had taken this long for Matsuda to speak. Light figured he’d be the most angry. He’d trusted him too much—they all had. There were all fools.
“As I said before, I think it would be best if I conducted this interrogating alone.” L only sounded mildly annoyed.
The shocked look had long since faded, but each time L met Light’s eyes (he was the only one of the group who seemed to have the stomach to do so) the question was still there.
Why?
Light’s first day of teaching was the most exhausting day of his life. His class consisted of only three students, all of which went by fake names. The youngest seemed to be around twelve, while the older two couldn’t be older than fifteen. The loudest seemed to make it his personal mission not to give Light a break.
That was fine, Light hadn’t expected one. He was slightly surprised when L informed him that he wouldn’t be monitoring the class.
“It disrupts their focus if they know I’m watching,” he had explained.
By the end of Light’s three hour class he was ready to pass out. The older students left the room as soon as they were dismissed—they at least gave him the respect of waiting til then—while the younger lingered in his seat.
“Everything alright?” Light asked Near.
He was the age Sayu had been when he would constantly help her with her homework, though Light doubted any of the skills he’d learned from teaching his younger sister would help with L’s successor.
L had given him a briefing on each of his students. Light knew facts about this boy, but that didn’t mean he knew how to talk to him.
“Mello will get used to you,” Near informed him. “He doesn’t like change.”
“Yeah, I got that impression.”
“He also doesn’t like his position as L’s favorite being compromised,” Near’s voice held no emotion. It reminded Light of L’s. Maybe that was why Light knew there was no point in arguing to this child that his mentor didn’t have favorites.
“I thought you were L’s favorite,” he said honestly.
“I’m the most likely to succeed,” Near replied. “There’s a difference.”
“I see.”
Light turned to the chalk board behind him and started to erase the equations he’d written on it through the course of the class. Dust littered the air, settling on his black shirt in little white clumps. Light had a theory that the other classrooms had dry-erase boards and L had purposely given his this room to torment him.
“Are you Kira?”
“What?” Light turned back to the boy calmly sitting at the little wooden school desk.
His expression was relaxed, he looked like he’d just asked Light what his favorite food was. Light hadn’t expected this. Maybe he should have given this was L’s successors he was dealing with, but why would this kid think that L would let a mass murder into his home? Well, that conclusion could only be ridiculous if it wasn’t exactly what was happening.
For a moment Light considered denying it. He considered calling this kid crazy or riddling this off as an attempt to upset him. But that would be pointless. If Near had the resolve to ask him, he was most likely already certain that he was correct.
“How long have you thought that?” Light asked instead.
“I was suspicious when Roger said L was going to be staying for a while,” Near told him thoughtfully. “The timing is odd.”
“So that made you assume he was bringing a serial killer with him?” Light raise an eyebrow.
“No,” Near shook his head. “Meeting you did that.”
“I seem like a serial killer?”
“You seem like Kira,” Near said. “You’re not denying it.”
“L said I’m supposed to take you seriously,” Light shrugged. This was his new normal. He might as well get used to it. “Did you finish your assignment?”
“No.” Near glanced at the paper in front of him. Light had noticed him working on it at the end of the class. He hadn’t stopped him, knowing full well that some students could work and listen at the same time.
“You should be working on it, then.”
“I’m stuck.”
“Really?” That surprised him.
“It’s not that appalling.” Near deadpanned, the first emotion he’d displayed so far.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it like that,” Light crossed the room to sit in the desk next to Near. “What’s confusing you?”
“I should be on trial by now.”
It was the fifth day since he’d given up. Light was still in the same cell. He was still waiting to die and L was still asking him questions he already knew the answer to.
“There’s more I don’t know,” L hummed. He was the only one on the other side of the bars. Light hadn’t seen the rest of the task force since that first day. He wondered how his family was, then had to stop himself from thinking about that.
“I confessed,” Light didn’t need to remind him. “You found the second notebook in my room. What else do you need?”
“You still haven’t answered my question.”
“That’s why you’re keeping me here?” Light was angry now.
“This could be a plan of yours,” L said. “Until I know why you’ve turned yourself in, it would be unwise to place you under arrest.”
“I’m sure the rest of the task force loves that,” Light spat.
“The rest of the task force trusts my judgment and is none of your concern.”
If there was one thing they’d all been forced to accept it was that L had been right from the start. Light was sure that stung their pride. No, they weren’t like him. It wasn’t their pride that had to be wounded right now. Light was sure that every member of the task force was disgusted—especially his father.
“It’s because I don’t want to do this anymore,” Light tried.
“And I don’t understand what lead you to that conclusion.”
“Maybe the fact that I don’t want to be a murderer,” Light said through his teeth.
“It’s unlikely that you would feel remorse now,” L mused. “After all of the lives you’ve ended to get here.”
“Fine,” Light closed his eyes. He didn’t want to do this. He thought that he’d at least be able to hold a little bit of his dignity. “You want the truth?”
“That has been my goal from the start, yes.”
“I’ll tell you everything, but I need you to come here.” Light doubted L would comply, even if he was handcuffed and L was as strong as him when he was at top form (given the strain the past few days had put on him Light doubted he’d last a minute in a fight even with his hands free).
He is chest tightened when L stood and walked to the bars. He produced a key from this pocket and undid the lock, sliding them open with ease. Before Light could say anything, L sat down on the cell bed next to him. They were inches away, but it wasn’t like L had ever cared about his personal space before.
“Satisfied?” L called his bluff.
“You’re insane,” Light breathed out.
“And you’re Kira,” L replied. “Will you answer me now?”
Light kissed him.
Note
How does a day with L feel în Watari's opinion? And do you think they care about each other?
Hmm, good question!
In the manga the Watari/L relationship seemed fairly business-like most of the time. Watari was presented initially as being L’s mouthpiece for communicating with the public, and most of what we saw going on otherwise was: (1) Watari caring for L and his associates, (2) Watari assisting L with his more shady methods of interrogation, and (3) Watari protecting L like a bodyguard. It was never outright mentioned that Watari had adopted L personally or anything like that, and all we really knew about L’s past from what he told Light was that he previously “lived in England for about five years:”
Tumblr media
It wasn’t even stated explicitly in the manga that L was a product of Wammy’s himself, either. That was something that the anime implied with the episode 25 flashbacks to L’s childhood:
Tumblr media
The manga did mention that Watari had opened many private orphanages around the world with his fortune and that he had dedicated Wammy’s to raising brilliant children to become the next L though. So it’s still easy to assume that L was also an orphan and raised by Watari in a similar manner to his successors just going by the manga alone:
Tumblr media
I would say that the manga almost originally insinuated that Wammy’s was something developed after L became so successful in order to carry on his legacy, though? That’s more how it sounds to me when Aizawa and Matsuda first explained it to Light, anyway:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ohba said in the behind the scenes book that he “didn’t think up anything for L’s past” when he originally introduced him to the series, so Ohba might not have even known for sure what L’s childhood was while he was writing this stuff himself. But in a later one-shot Ohba & Obata created he gave L a childhood backstory from Watari’s POV which showed him being brought to Wammy’s as  a child. There L independently demonstrated his knack for solving crime and was subsequently nurtured by Watari into becoming the world’s most successful private detective:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one shot makes their relationship seem mutually beneficial in that L is allowed to pursue his interests and has all his wants and needs met by Watari, and Watari has also essentially created his greatest invention of all, the world’s best super-detective. L apparently also helped him make scads of money because he was really good at playing the stock market even as a kid, haha:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The anime made their relationship seem more tender and familial when it showed L feeling upset about something and going to talk to Watari about it, too. Watari seems to be genuinely worried about him and asks him what’s wrong, and then the scene fades out, leaving L’s actual feelings here very ambiguous. I really did like this moment and thought it was sweet and sad and made sense, as I doubt L really did have anyone else to talk to about things, and I’m sure they did know each other better than anyone else for a very long time.
Tumblr media
Though the manga didn’t include anything as soft between them as this, there were a couple little moments that I thought made it seem like they had a closer personal relationship behind the scenes, too. Watari butts in out of concern for Aizawa’s feelings when L is testing his loyalty to the task force, for example, and L reacts in such a childish and hilarious way to that. It seems like L’s rudeness is embarrassing Watari here, and Watari giving away L’s duplicity is possibly embarrassing L as well, or at the very least annoying him:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And L definitely looked shocked and upset when Watari died in the manga, too. He isn’t the type to be moved to tears probably, but the way he reaches helplessly toward the screen here is quite sad to me:
Tumblr media
All in all I would say that their relationship isn’t necessarily as close as a father/son bond, but that in their own way they did know each other very well and genuinely care about each other, too. I don’t think Watari was the most upstanding or well-intentioned person around, as Wammy’s itself seems like a pretty questionable institution if you look at it from a realistic point of view, and he was fine with helping L torture his suspects and such. Even Ohba said so in the behind the scenes book. He mentioned something like “Watari is an inventor who raises orphans into detectives for fun” and that “he knows it probably sounds horrible.” Lol. I think that a day with L for Watari is probably a lot of meticulous caring for L in a practical sense, assisting him in his crime-solving, and guarding him as both someone he cares about and someone who he views almost as his greatest invention. It’s probably not all noble heroism and fatherly devotion by any means on Watari’s behalf, but I’m sure it’s not all purely cold and utilitarian, either.
chapter 5: December 31, 2010
Summary: Shit gets real. Near continues to have refuge in his audacity and Naomi continues to be snarky.
NOTES: Two more chapters! Whew boy. We've got a live one up in here. Oh Near, we're really in it now. This bitch is almost 10k, so I BETTER get a review, ask, or reply talking ab how good this is. (This is a joke; no pressure.) TW: Death of a loved one, suicide mention, allusion to gun violence and sex.
ffn.online
“Light Yagami is a registered grad student at To-Oh University, but nobody has seen him on campus since he graduated. And the Japanese police have given all the employees false job titles to hide the fact they are members of the police force. He received letters of appreciation from the police in 2000 and 2002 for advice that led to resolved cases. I think it’s safe to say that these facts and the influence of his father point to him currently being with the police.
“When I asked former students what they remembered about him, several of them had interesting comments. He had the highest score in the entrance exam, but someone going by Hideki Ryuuga--the same name as the top idol back then---tied scores with Yagami. They gave the freshman address together, and were often seen with each other. But no photograph of this Hideki Ryuuga can be found.”
So was this L? Feels like suicide to me… then again, they don’t seem to instill Wammy’s alumni with a particular sense of self preservation, Naomi thought.
“I also received information that around June of 2004, Hideki Ryuuga, Light Yagami, and Misa Amane were seen together on university campus. After that, everyone seems to have lost track of this Ryuuga. Light Yagami and Misa Amane also went missing for several months at that time,” Rester finished.
“He used the name of a popular idol to get close to Light Yagami, whom he suspected of being Kira. It was a dangerous plan that assumed he wouldn’t be killed so long as Kira didn’t find out his real name. But then the Second Kira appeared, with the ability to learn people’s names just by looking at their faces. Then, they joined hands. Everything fits. Light Yagami is Kira, and Misa Amane being the Second Kira, and Hideki Ryuuga being L,” Near said.
“It corroborates the report we received that Mogi and Aizawa went straight to Amane’s place after leaving here,” Gevanni said.
“So the fact that Amane is Light’s fiancee is…,” Lidner added, avoiding Naomi’s eyes.
“No coincidence,” Naomi finished. “She was a loose cannon, just going back to when she first appeared. No doubt, he wants to keep her close to avoid any mishaps.”
Late at night and when everyone was distracted or asleep, Naomi finally had her chance.
“You’re still holding a grudge over what Mello did?” Lidner asked.
“I think it was a damn stupid thing to do, yes. No matter if Near said for you to go along with his wishes, he still walked in and you held me back from tackling him and ending the standoff,” Naomi seethed. She rarely found herself angry, but when she did, it was enough to make others recoil.
“He never would’ve forgiven you for the blow to his pride, and it would’ve just escalated things.”
“His pride is the least of my concerns, Lidner. He pointed a goddamn gun at Near and you wanted me to be worried about his pride? He. Almost. Killed. Near.”
“I never told you to be worried about anything.”
“Don't you fucking twist my words like that. You putting his pride over Near’s life says a lot.”
Lidner's brows had knit and her eyes had narrowed. “You’re complaining to me about double allegiances? At least they’re working together now, right?”
“The last thing I want is to be working with a criminal again.”
Lidner had chewed the inside of her mouth for a second before lowering her voice and adding, “Think of it like this. Your fiance is like Near: he asks too many questions before pulling the trigger. But in this case, Mello shoots first and asks questions later. Near needs that push to act.”
Naomi’s vocal volume spiked for a second, and this drew Rester and Gevanni’s attention:
“Raye exhausted all options to make sure his gun was the last resort!”
“That doesn’t sound like very good methodology to me," Lidner said sharply.
That was the last button Lidner pushed before Naomi snapped back, volume rising, “Don’t you fucking compare them! Raye was a good man, Mello is--”
“Is there a problem?” Rester asked. Gevanni was placid, eyes sliding between them, gears turning in his head.
“No,” said Lidner coolly, eyes boring into Naomi. Naomi was red with anger.
“I’m going out. If I’m not back for a couple hours, don’t worry.” She knew her hands were shaking.
She bunched her turtleneck to her mouth and screamed as soon as she was out of earshot. She cried later on her bike and almost ran a red light.
Naomi had the urge to scream now, just thinking back on it. She stepped outside and dug the photograph out of them on the beach. That had been a fun day. Suruga had taken the picture. He was also understandably irritated when Naomi told him about the incident.
“So she just uses something she told you in confidence like that? Sheesh,” Suruga said. “That’s just shitty.”
“I screamed. Not in the room, just as I was leaving.” Naomi shuddered. “I’m not proud of it.”
“You have every right to be irritated, Naomi. Again, talking about something she told you in confidence for the sake of a comparison was just low. Especially in earshot of your other coworkers and your boss.”
“I almost woke up my boss. I don’t think he would’ve been too happy, ha… Do you think about what would’ve happened if he lived, Suruga?”
He hadn’t responded. There was an implicit yes, but she supposed he feared crying more than being transparent with his friend.
“Men don’t like crying,” Audrey had explained. “Toxic masculinity says that men have to be these pinnacles of strength. The only emotion they show is anger, and so on. Hell, Raye was expressive, but he never liked crying, especially in front of me or you.”
Naomi figured there was some truth to that. But she also figured avoiding crying was unhealthy period. No way around it.
Though, she was one to talk.
She resisted the urge to cry and stepped back inside.
“Near, this NHN announcer Kiyomi Takada was a classmate of Light Yagami’s in college. She was an excellent student, and was on close terms with him, it seems,” Rester added.
“How do mean ‘close’?” Near asked.
“I can’t assume anything, but they looked to be more than friends. I don’t believe this is a coincidence.”
“But Light’s relationship with Amane started when he was in college, too,” Gevanni pointed out.
“I don’t believe anyone’s introduced you to the concept of male infidelity,” Naomi said dryly. "Clearly there's no accounting for taste."
“Commander Rester, can you get close to Takada?”
“I’ll give it a try, but… She’s more heavily protected by Kira worshippers than Demegawa ever was. I’d attribute it to her being a woman. To the worshippers, if Kira is their God, Takada is their goddess.”
Prophet, Naomi corrected.
“You said she was an excellent student, but that was only her grades. She’s downright stupid outside of class.”
This woman hosts debates and is knowledgeable about our political landscape, and she’s stupid because she worships Kira? Naomi thought. Audrey would’ve called this misogyny. I call it underestimation.
“It may be possible for me to get close to her among all the worshippers. But Mr Aizawa and Mogi have seen my face before. They may tell L about our movements.”
“You don’t have to worry about that. There’s no reason for them to get in the way of our investigation. I’m sure they won’t tell L you are a member of the SPK. And if that information is passed to L and you die, it means L is Kira. I find it hard to believe Kira would do such a thing before finding out about Mello and I, unless Kira is in a very tight situation.
“Gevanni, Lidner, Maki, would you like to go to Japan as well? It’s almost certain the one writing the names is in Japan. I think it’s a safe call based on the people killed, and from the fact an announcer from NHN was chosen as the spokesperson.”
Naomi wasn’t too impressed with Kiyomi Takada. It’s definitely not easy to keep up with Kira and what’s going on, but it was her blind loyalty and outright reverence to a murderer that chafed. She tried time and time again to put her personal ties to the Kira case aside, but it just wasn’t possible.
“Depending upon what their sin was, Kira will not tolerate people with a criminal record…,” Kiyomi Takada said. “Starting today, I will be introducing you to messages and requests from viewers as well as expressing my own opinion on some matters. Many of the countries and companies claim to support Kira now…”
Naomi shook her head and tuned the rest of it out.
“... But that is a mere empty promise, and we do not know how they are supporting Kira or should be supporting Kira. I feel that in order to create a peaceful world as fast as we can, Kira should give orders to the army and police of each country on how they should act. I would like Kira to give a reply to this and…”
Near turned on his PA. “Rester, find out who Takada saw last night. Whatever it takes.”
Rester nodded. “Well, Kiyomi Takada is being protected unbelievably well, and even getting near her is tough. I never expected it to be this difficult. A reporter who tried to investigate the meeting last night was caught by the guards and accused of breaking and entering, then got killed by Kira on the 9 o’clock news. Her phone is completely untraceable and bug proof. She’s better guarded than the president.”
“Speaking from experience?” Naomi asked. The thought of things becoming that authoritarian worried her, despite her wisecrack.
“Very funny, Maki. All her guards are people who’ve participated in TV programs pertaining to Kira many times, and whose backgrounds can be easily traced. It’s incredibly hard to get in.”
“Gevanni and Lidner should be getting back to Japan shortly. Please get near her any way you can,” Near said.
“Near, Takada went into the Perin Hotel. Until she comes out, no one is allowed to enter or leave unless requested by Takada,” Rester said.
“Then you’re going to have to try to become one of Takada’s trusted bodyguards at the very least,” Near said.
“I’ll do my best.”
December 12 “We’re trying to get on Takada’s personal bodyguard team, but the hurdles are getting higher. We need more time,” Rester said.
“Very well. I had a feeling it would be like that,” Near replied. “Maki, would you mind making flight arrangements?”
“Yeah, just a second.”
While she cleared her cookies and went searching for airplane tickets, Near called the Japanese task force.
“This is Near. I’d like to talk to L.”
“This is L speaking.”
“It’s been a while. Thank you for keeping the connection open.”
“What do you want?”
That’s no way to greet someone, Naomi thought.
“I am in Japan to capture Kira. Right now, actually,” Near said. He snipped away at paper. “Seeing as how the best way to investigate Kira is to start with Kiyomi Takada and all.”
L paused. “I’m in Japan already, doing just that. If you’d like to cooperate, I’m willing to do so as well. But since you’re suspicious of me, I guess that’s not possible.”
Near’s brow furrowed. It quickly turned into a scowl. “Did you just say ‘I’?”
“Yes. I’ve personally gotten into contact with Takada and am making headway in the investigation.”
In more ways than one, I think, Naomi thought.
“We’ve gotten as far as having our investigator, Mogi, be able to enter NHN.”
So he knows we’re trying to get into NHN ourselves. Or is hypothesizing as so. With these geniuses, any hypothesis automatically means they know something.
“We’ll find a way to get into NHN as well, but there’s one more thing. You said you’ve personally contacted Takada and are investigating her, right? Then please tell Takada however you can that members of the SPK have escaped from the Kira worshippers in New York have entered Japan to capture Kira. Judging from the current world situation and her position, that’s the type of news she’ll have to report.
“You can even say that there are five members of the group including Near, the leader. There are four other members that Mr Mogi and Mr Aizawa met. This isn’t a lie, so it’ll be a true report. If either of the aforementioned men see them near NHN, please feel free to tell L. We don’t want to get in the way of your investigation. But please don’t show their faces as members of the SPK on TV or via other media outlets. This report is to lure out Kira.
“Including me, there’s only five of us. There’s no way Kira is going to find out, and I’m sure that Kira will make a move to try and kill us. That is where I intend to counterstrike and defeat Kira.”
Oh, great, so we’re being used as bait. I’d rather I was the killing shot, Naomi thought, and slammed her laptop lid closed.
“There are five members altogether in Japan. Is that it for the message, Near?”
“Yes. I’d gathered people who could work under me, but now that the situation has changed, numbers aren’t important. I’m in Japan. Since you are as well, we may come face to face.”
“True.”
“And that will be something worth looking forward to.”
“Indeed.”
“We’ll bring Kira to an end once and for all.”
“Of course.”
Well, he’s taciturn all of a sudden. And here I thought he’d never shut up, seeing as how all the other meetings have been.
“The only way to restore the world now is to get rid of Kira and the existing notebooks. If we succeed in both of those objectives, we win. If we die, Kira wins. This battle was not about an arrest or something measured by the laws of this world. It’s always been a one-one battle to prove who’s on top.”
Near turned the PA off.
“You’re playing a zero-sum game, Near,” Naomi said.
“You don’t have to tell me that. The original L was doing the same thing. Commander Rester, where are Gevanni and Lidner now?”
“Right now, they’re in a booked room near NHN.”
“Please connect me to them.”
“Pay close attention to what I’m about to say. I have decided to meet L---rather, Kira---in person in the near future and settle this case once and for all.”
“In person?” Gevanni repeated, the poor guy surprised into echolalia.
“Do you mean you’re going to see him face to face and capture him?” Lidner asked.
“Yes. The world is practically in Kira’s hands now. But, in Kira’s nearly completed world, only the SPK members, Mello, the Japanese task force, and I remain in Kira’s way. I remain the biggest problem as well, since he can’t easily get my name or face.
“It seems Mello’s name has already been discovered, and he’s also wanted for the murder of the Japanese police director and deputy director.
“As we all know, he lets his emotions control him. Kira may think it will be easy to kill him using his followers. If Kira succeeds in killing me, he will very likely kill the rest of you, and the Japanese task force.
“Since I, his biggest headache, who hasn’t made a move until now am now making said move, Kira will not miss this opportunity to kill me. And the fact that he’s said he’s willing to meet me means he’s accepted my challenge. The die is cast. Whether we like it or not, we must make our move.
“Let’s examine this situation. L is Light Yagami and Light Yagami is Kira. We know for sure that L would answer yes if we asked if he was Light Yagami, seeing as how he told us he’d personally gotten into contact with Takada, as well as Maki’s account of meeting him five years ago. But he will obviously deny the fact that he’s Kira. There’ve been many incidents to make us suspect he’s Kira, but no solid proof.”
Naomi was rather bitter that things could’ve gone very differently if she’d not regarded Light’s “selling” of the Japanese task force as a bit too maudlin to be genuine. Mostly at herself. She’d learned her lesson then: hard evidence only, no circumstantial evidence will be taken as fact whatsoever.
“There’s almost no doubt that he’s Kira. I’m 99.9999 percent sure. The lack of proof is the only reason it’s not a hundred percent.
“Kira… let’s call him L-Kira. Around him are several people who know of the existence of the notebook, such as Aizawa, Mogi, and the others. However, L-KIra is not using the notebook himself. That’s because there are others around him keeping an eye on him and the notebook. Obviously, there’s another who has the notebook and is using it. That’s X-Kira. Based on the fact that L-KIra has used Misa Amane in the past, as well as with relation to the attack on Mello’s hideout, I think that L-Kira does not have the Shinigami eyes. But judging from the killings of recent criminals, X-Kira definitely has the eyes. Of course, both Kiras are connected in some way. But since L-Kira is being watched, it would be almost impossible for him to get in direct contact with X-Kira.
“So, they use Takada. Note how Kira’s messages are spread through NHN, and L-Kira and Takada can meet in person without arousing suspicion. At the moment, both Kiras are able to send messages to and through Takada. Though she may be only Kira’s puppet, we can’t deny she’s highly important to us in discovering X-Kira.
“I likely don’t have to explain this, but this is a recap of the situation. I see two ways to defeat Kira. The first is…” Naomi cringed as Near pulled the trigger on the toy gun and knocked over the legos. “We kill L- and X-Kira and confiscate the notebooks. If the killings stop, it means we are correct.”
“Right. That would prove L---Light Yagami---was Kira,” Rester said.
Near returned the cork to the barrel of the revolver. “We are almost positive that L is Kira, so I’m confident we can solve this case. But we won’t be using this method, no matter what.”
“Why not?”
“Even if the killings stop, it doesn’t really prove that Light Yagami is Kira. Since no one is using the notebook at the task force headquarters, there’s always a chance that the killings stopped because of X-Kira’s death. And the killings may continue if there are Y- and Z-Kiras.
“Most important of all, we kill those two and the killings stop, then to say see, we were right… such an ex post facto justification will not be tolerated. That’s not the way we do things.”
“We?”
“Of course, we being me and L. He wouldn’t be happy if we did that.”
Naomi was still ruminating on the possibility of X-Kira’s identity. She figured it would have to be an acquaintance of Takada’s but not Yagami’s, so it would leave a pool of up to a hundred people who were regulars on her debate show.
In another life, while her and Rester were discussing this during the C-Kira case and Rester would say this and shrug and say “like it would offend L’s spirit or something”, Naomi would shrug, too, and say, “Well, that means he centers his identity on being L’s true successor.” And Lidner would take a seat on the counter and say, “That could be used as an advantage some day, by someone unsavory.”
“It would be an insult to L, who entrusted those who came after him with this case.”
And then Rester would mention that line. Naomi had sat back in her chair and folded her arms. “You’d better hope someone wouldn’t decide to create another impossible to solve case,” Naomi would say. If she closed her eyes, she could see B’s burning silhouette.
“Hence, even if we are going to kill L- and X-Kira, first we must rub their faces in the evidence and make them taste the misery of their defeat. It’s out of the question to kill them before that. So we get solid proof.”
“And how will we do that?”
“Have him use the notebook and arrest him on the spot.”
Naomi’s throat went dry.
“Then the person whose name was written will die. Do you have any plans for that?’
“Not at the moment, no. But we no longer have other ways to get proof. But I’ll think of something. When we first meet Kira, the first person he’ll write down is me, so.” Lowering his voice, Near held the miniature notebook replica. “Now what will I do…”
Holding the L-Kira labelled lego, he added, “But just as I said now, killing Kira and confiscating the notebook with hopes that the killings will stop is a plan Kira will assume we have. We may be able to use that to our advantage. But for the time being, our job is to find out who is executing the criminals as Kira. And in order to do that, we must investigate NHN and Kiyomi Takada, even though Kira knows we will be doing it.”
December 14 “The Japanese police announced at three PM today that five members of the SPK who escaped from New York have entered Japan. The police are initiating a full search for these people and are calling out for public support,” Kiyomi Takada said.
To say Naomi was unsurprised was an understatement. Takada had expressed such authoritarian views before, so this was no surprise. But the police being willing to hunt them down and be the footsoldiers for a regime like this was the cherry on top of a shit sundae.
The latest ass-kissing program (Today’s Lady Takada) began.
“Today, Lady Takada chose four female bodyguards from 20 finalists who went through rigorous testing. These four glorious women are Tatsumi Ooyama, champion of the women’s 60KG weight class in the 22nd world karate championship. Former CIA agent, Hal Lidner…
“These four all passed the tests and…”
“It’s just as you said, Near,” Rester said. “Sooner or later, Takada needed female bodyguards, which she didn’t have until now. Being with the CIA formerly made it easier for Halle to be chosen, but it’ll make it easier for Kira to notice her as well.”
“Yes… I am grateful to Lidner for putting the investigation before her safety. By the way, Commander Rester, have you been able to come up with an answer for this?”
“If I was Kira, who would I have chosen for the spokesperson after Demegawa?”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry, but I can’t watch and listen to several screens at the same time. I can’t do it in only five days. I need more time.”
“Gevanni said the same. I was merely going to use your opinions as a reference. Don’t think too hard about it. An answer off the top of your head will suffice. Maki?”
“An easier solution would be to look at each segment of each news channel separately. You’ll lose out on sleep, but maybe you’ll have more input that way,” Naomi said.
“That’s not what I’m asking.”
“I know. If I were Kira, I’d go for someone I know and has a platform. As for X-Kira…”
“So long as it’s not someone extreme like Demegawa, they all look the same as a possibility for Kira’s spokesperson,” Rester said.
“I can’t decide either, but I wouldn’t have chosen Takada. No matter of her and Yagami’s acquaintance, she’s still a rookie announcer,” Gevanni said.
“Agreed. It seems she’s popular, having gotten second place in a magazine poll. There are, of course, more male announcers with more experience and dignified demeanors. So why was Takada chosen? It could just be that Takada is the type of woman Kira fancies, but I think it was because…”
Naomi couldn't hold back a snort.
“Takada was a Kira worshipper and Kira knew about it. The reason Demegawa was chosen is because he zealously used Sakura TV to support Kira even before the world began leaning towards him. It would’ve been easy for Kira to threaten someone into being the spokesperson, but it would be to his advantage if the spokesperson supported Kira.
“Well, in Takada’s case, I’m sure she was chosen because she’s a Kira worshipper. Here’s a comment by Takada from last night’s news.”
He turned on a clip of Takada.
“I feel that it is necessary for schools to educate children about Kira, and that Kira’s teachings are the proper way to live.”
“Ever since she started making comments to Kira, Takada’s been nothing but a stupid Kira worshipper.”
“That’s not stupidity, that’s authoritarianism and incredibly worrying,” Naomi said. "She very much has her own agenda." … So could we be looking at her becoming Kira point blank, or does she want to be his follower and nothing more?
“True. But it’s also true that Takada’s words are affecting the public, which is filled with stupid people. To Kira, this is great.”
"It's quite easy to assume that because someone supports something authoritarian that they lack the ability to rub two brain cells together. It's much scarier to think about Kira supporters being our lawyers, our realtors, etcetera," Naomi said. Near shrugged.
“Then if we believe Light Yagami is Kira, does that mean he chose Takada because he was on intimate terms with her in college and knew her feelings towards Kira?” Rester asked. That’s generous, Naomi thought.
“No, Takada only started making pro-Kira remarks after the meeting at the hotel. L/Light Yagami claims that he’s in contact with Kira for the investigation. And I’m sure that we’ll be able to confirm that with Mr Aizawa and the others.
“Therefore, if L-Kira/Light Yagami chose Takada, he would’ve been able to get Takada to make pro-Kira remarks from the moment she became the spokesperson. But in reality, Takada only started making pro-Kira comments the day after the meeting. She also spoke directly to Kira in the comment, so I can only assume that L-Kira made her say this comment, since he hasn’t gotten into contact with X-Kira at that point. Same with Takada before the meeting. That’s likely because Mr Aizawa and the others had their eyes on him and had doubts. That means Takada was chosen as the spokesperson through X-Kira’s personal judgement.”
“But isn’t it possible L-Kira ordered X-Kira to kill Demegawa and choose Takada as the next spokesperson before Aizawa and the others began to watch over him?” Rester asked.
“I won’t say that it’s impossible, but after Demegawa died, it was a week before Takada was chosen as the next spokesperson. Even if L-Kira had ordered X-Kira to use Takada after Demegawa died, it would be meaningless and odd to order X-Kira to wait a week.” He leaned down to inspect a black lego. “So it fits better to assume that X-Kira, unable to get in contact with L-Kira, killed Demegawa and then took a week to decide who to choose as the next spokesperson.”
“Then that proves Maki right, that X-Kira has some kind of connection with Takada,” Rester said.
“Yes. I understand that it’s dangerous to investigate Takada right now, but could you please look into it with Gevanni again?”
Both agreed.
“I’m going to start off by tracing all of the programs that Takada has appeared on, Starting with the most recent ones and looking at the regulars. Maki, would you mind taking record of these people?”
“Of course.”
On a hunch, she dug up a previous survey of one Teru Mikami. Near practically swam through all the DVDs to find Kira’s Kingdom, coming to a stop in front of all the monitors in front of Mikami speaking about Kira’s ideals.
“The reason I became a prosecutor is because of the frustration and helplessness I felt over all the physical and emotional abuse I witnessed as a child. All the young people going into the world should have their own goals and use their abilities to contribute to society.”
The click of a remote, and next she heard:
“I would very much like to hear Kira’s voice again, and I intend to follow your ideals. I believe that following your orders and teachings is the quickest way to achieve world peace. Kira, please let me hear your voice. If there are no orders or words from Kira, I believe that I am going to have to judge by myself what Kira’s thoughts may be, and put them into action.”
Naomi looked up from the survey.
“Near, I think you want to take a look at this.”
Right on his survey on the question of his opinion on Kira, the answer was listed as “God.”
Near peered over her shoulder, and turned on his PA to Rester.
“You no longer need to look into Takada’s friends and associates. Please come back to HQ, as Maki and I have just found a suspect. I’ll ask you to start investigating again if my assumption is wrong.”
“You’ve already found a suspect?”
“We’re good at looking," Naomi said.
December 21 “According to Lidner, Mogi is acting as Amane’s manager, which means he will often be away from L’s headquarters,” Rester said.
“That’s right,” Near replied.
“We can get Lidner to ask Mogi if they have their eyes on L when he is meeting Takada. That way, L won’t find out what we’re investigating.”
“But Mogi probably won’t tell us. And it’s highly likely that both Kiras are contacting each other through Takada. They know that we know it, so there’s no reason for us to go sneaking.”
Obviously, being clandestine isn’t our strong suit, Naomi thought, and passed Near the PA to L.
“L, if Mr Aizawa is there with you right now, is it okay for me to talk to him in person through this?”
“It’s Aizawa. What’s the problem?”
“When L meets with Takada, are you recording their conversations through wires and cameras?”
“No, we’re only using wires.”
“I see… Thank you.”
She set the PA aside and rolled her neck.
“If it’s only a wire, we can assume that L- and X-Kira are getting into contact with another through Takada. This only makes things more dangerous for Lidner. All of Takada’s bodyguards have their cell phone records checked. We can’t directly contact Lidner, so is that all right?” Rester asked.
“Lidner is well aware of the danger, but the important thing is that she is still trying to find out who X-Kira is through Takada and we have no clue as to the identity of X-Kira, so L’s attention will lie with them," Near said.
“Gevanni?” Rester asked.
“It’s about Mikami. Tailing him is strangely easy. It’s not like he’s making a move to go into hiding or anything. He’s been living at the same place for the past four years and leads an ordinary life. He’s very active with his job as well. I understand he’s a Kira worshipper from the fact he was on Kira’s Kingdom, but I find it hard to believe he could be X-Kira.”
“It’s not like Kira’s going to be waving his arms around saying ‘I kill people for justice’,” Naomi said.
“Thanks, Maki. I appreciate your input.”
“No problem.”
“The chances of Mikami being X-Kira are high, even ignoring his personal endeavors. Please be careful. Don’t try to enter his house or anything else yet. Just keep your eye on him.”
“Of course. You should try this, Maki, it’s very fun.”
Too familiar. “Stalking isn’t my idea of fun. I’d be worried if I didn’t know you were joking.”
“Please,” Rester said.
“Mikami just pulled the notebook out. There’s something---ugh, weird about it. He took a picture of the guy who was harassing a girl before writing in the notebook. He’s getting off the train, I’ll follow---” Gevanni said.
A high pitched scream followed.
“The guy who was doing the harassing just collapsed, about a half minute after his name was written… but that leaves me curious as to what the purpose to taking the picture was. And he said delete while writing it.”
“O-kay. X-Kira is definitely Mikami,” Rester said.
“Yes, but that also makes the possibility known of there being a Y-Kira,” Near said.
“So what do we do? Aren’t we going to capture Mikami?”
“Commander Rester. Please don’t make me repeat myself. Even though we know for sure that Mikami is X-Kira, we’re not going to use that method. If we do that, we’re never going to be able to get to L. If we capture Mikami, we may even face the situation that the killings stop and Mikami will appear to everyone to be Kira.
“All will be meaningless unless we prove the Light Yagami is Kira, the root of all this, and stop him.”
“Right…”
“In any event, we must get near Mikami, but there is one thing we must be extra careful about. And that is the Shinigami.”
Naomi raised an eyebrow. She’d never particularly believed in them, even as her dad told her that they take children who don’t go to sleep by 10pm’s souls. (Because what is the point of parenting if you can’t scare them a little.)
“The Japanese task force once told us that in order to get the notebook back from Mello, Kira gave the Japanese HQ a different notebook from that of Mello’s via a Shinigami. That means a Shinigami followed Kira’s orders and brought the notebook to them. And that means the Shinigami possessing Mikami will follow Mikami’s orders. So if we are going to tail Mikami from now on, there’s a chance that Mikami’s Shinigami will alert him.”
Rester said, “But the Shinigami can only be seen by those who’ve touched the notebook. Being careful of something you can’t see isn’t easy.”
“Even so, I would like you to do it. But this time, you may keep some distance from him and film his movements. It would be best if you can get an image of him talking to the Shinigami.”
“All right. I’ll see what I can do.”
December 25 If they only have wires, they’d just have to not say something out loud if they wanted to avoid being caught by the task force, Naomi thought.
Her attention was drawn by a notification that Lidner was on the monitor.
“I’m sorry, I’ve hardly had time to be alone. It was four days ago. Takada, Amane, and me met up. The conversation was really only about which of them was ‘his’---really meaning Light Yagami’s girlfriend,” Lidner said.
Naomi rolled her eyes. “So it was a covert catfight?”
“What does it mean?” Rester asked. Lidner’s expression just about screamed Are you shitting me?
“That Light Yagami’s a two timer?” Naomi said, as Near replied, “This just proves that Light Yagami is a ladykiller. Takada and Amane are infatuated with him. Though I’d be inclined to agree with Maki’s summary.”
“Seriously, Near?” Rester asked. “You too, Maki.”
“And they went after each other instead of going after Light for being a two timer.” Naomi shook her head and rolled her eyes.
“But being seriously infatuated can be a problem. They won’t betray him, and he can control them as he wants. However, what I’m more worried about is that there’s been nothing new in Gevanni’s reports,” Near said.
“But he reported today that Mikami pulled out the notebook and killed someone. Or had him killed, if we’re going with the Y-Kira hypothesis.”
“Not the notebook, but the Shinigami. If a Shinigami is possessing him, it would be normal to say a word or two to each other in three days. If they’ve decided not to talk to each other in public, then it doesn’t make sense that he pulled the notebook twice this week in front of everyone to kill someone. And then it’s strange that…”
“What is?”
“The Shinigami at L’s headquarters can be seen by the other members. That means that apart from Light Yagami, they’re also keeping a close watch on the notebook and the Shinigami. Obviously, L-Kira is not able to give orders or talk to Shinigami that easily. But judging from the fact that Kira probably got his notebook from L-Kira, then only L-Kira and Mikami should be able to see the Shinigami on that notebook.
“And if that’s so, why didn’t they get into contact with each other by using that Shinigami? It’s a lot safer than making contact through Takada, and if only the two of them can see the Shinigami, there should have been a way for them to get into contact.”
Naomi stretched her legs, careful to avoid the legos, and swivelled until she was laying on her front. “That also means the task force has touched the notebook.”
Rester’s knees popped as he got onto Near’s level. “Now that you mention it… But the only thing I can think of is that there are Shinigami that will work for you and those that won’t.”
“Yes. Or the members of the task force can see Mikami’s Shinigami too. Mello said that he’d seen a Shinigami. While he had his own, L’s investigation team must have had their own Shinigami as well. Mr Aizawa and Mogi have claimed to have seen a Shinigami that was different from the one that their headquarters. That could be possible.”
The monitors beeped.
“Gevanni?” Rester asked.
“Mikami’s talking to himself!”
“Huh?”
“Yeah, I’m wondering if he’s talking to the Shinigami. I’m too far away from him to hear what he’s saving, but I’ve been able to film his mouth as it moves. The footage is here.” Gevanni sent the footage to the monitor where everyone could see it. “It’s at the rooftop of the prosecutor’s office where Mikami works, during a break. Oh---he’s saying something right here.”
“Slow it down.” Rester leaned towards the monitors and read Mikami’s lips word-for-word perfect. “I guess he’s asking if it’s his Shinigami?”
“I see you aren’t a commander for nothing,” Near said.
“He seems to have reacted to the piece of paper to the bottom right of him.”
“He’s giving a small sigh.”
“He’s talking a little more from here. Give me a second, I’m going to zoom up to his mouth and slow down the footage.”
“That Shinigami… ever since he handed me the notebook, he hasn’t appeared…,” Rester said.
“Huh,” Naomi said. She pushed herself off the floor and into a squatting position.
“So there’s no Shinigami possessing Mikami at the moment.”
“But that makes me wonder if there’s a time limit as to when the Shinigami can appear to Mikami,” Naomi said.
“True…”
Near threw one of the Grim Reaper legos over his shoulder without comment.
“It makes things easier for our investigation if Mikami isn’t being possessed by a Shinigami. We may even be able to find proof from him that Light Yagami is Kira.”
“Yes…”
“Gevanni here. I’m at Mikami’s apartment. I’ve counted two surveillance cameras at the door to his room from my position. I’m assuming that the security inside is even tighter so even if I’m able to get inside, it’s going to be hard for me to remain unnoticed.”
“The tenants gotta be loaded if there’s security cameras everywhere,” Naomi said.
“Mikami makes 200 grand a year easily, not counting bonuses. Anyways, when he’s outside, Mikami just leaves the notebook inside his bag, so it’s not seriously guarded. But it would be undoubtedly strange if he did keep his guard up in public.”
“Commander Rester, I would like you and Gevanni to research Mikami’s behaviour patterns as much as possible, and look for any opportunity that might let us touch the notebook.”
“I thought you weren’t going to confiscate the notebook from him,” Rester said.
“Yes. I won’t use Mikami and the notebook as proof. The chances are that Mikami doesn’t have a Shinigami of his own, but we can’t be sure until we touch the notebook and monitor Mikami for several days. Of course, there’s a possibility that Mikami does have a Shinigami possessing him, and that the Shinigami will tell Mikami that we touched the notebook and have him kill us. But even so, from all the observation so far, it’s likely that Mikami’s Shinigami isn’t very cooperative with him.”
“So who’s going to touch the notebook? Me or Gevanni?”
“Well, since you’re his superior… Gevanni, I guess.”
Naomi cringed.
“I appreciate the support, Maki.”
“Yeah, no problem.”
“If there is no Shinigami possessing Mikami, then there’s a plan I’d like to see put into action. But if there isn’t, I’m going to have to make some changes.”
“Very well. I’ll keep my eye on Mikami.”
“Mr Aizawa. It’s been a while,” Near said.
“I believe what you said earlier. L and Takada have been seeing each other almost every night,” Aizawa said.
“I know.”
“What about this? The two are talking to each other via notepads. I left a mark on the notepads at the hotel, and…”
“Of course. As I said before, I know what’s going on. Kira is using the notepad to give orders to X-Kira through Takada. X-Kira being the person who’s doing the killings. Anyways, it’s commendable that you found this out on your own. But it does little for us unless you’ve found any actual notes.”
“I haven’t found them yet…”
“Then it means nothing. Those notes can be ripped up and flushed down the toilet or merely handed over to Takada to dispose of, since no one can search her bodily. In other words, there are a million ways to dispose of them.”
“You said that if we could get one note, it’ll be proof! I can talk to other members of the task force and have one of them hide inside the room once it’s booked. The wire detectors don’t react to people and I can pretend to have checked the place where the investigator is hiding. That way it’ll be possible to get one of the notes before they’re thrown away.”
“Mr Aizawa…,” Near said, “please stay out of the way.”
“What do you mean?”
Near underlined just why Aizawa intervening was such a bad idea.
“Unless they were to institute cameras in certain spots,” Naomi pointed out.
“But they run the risk of detection either way,” Near pointed out. “Obviously, all of your identities have been revealed to whoever is doing Kira’s killings. They know who you are. Kira probably has it set up so he can kill you all with the snap of a finger. The only reason you’re all still alive is because of me. There’s no other reason now that everything has fallen into Kira’s hands.
“Though, if you are able to get that notepad and are killed, I could use that as proof that L is Kira. But I already know that, so it’s useless to me. It’s not the way to go. If you do this, it’ll only allow Kira to move about freely, and it’s nothing but a headache for me. Even if Kira’s identity is proven to the world, most people are still going to take Kira’s side. And even if that happens, even I will no longer be a threat to Kira. Do you follow?
“Mr Aizawa, it’s not longer a matter of merely finding evidence that L is Kira. The only way to stop Kira is for me to completely defeat him and rub it into his face.” He held up his own lego figure. “Mr Aizawa, I’m sorry to say, but Kira doesn’t even consider the task force a threat. You’re not worth dealing with to him. He sees you as a bunch of flies buzzing around him.” Near took his Kira figurine and knocked down the task force’s lego models. “However, he’ll never be able to ignore me. That’s because, to Kira, I’m his current opponent in the battle for pride between him and L. The only way to stop Kira is for me to defeat him.
“Mr Aizawa, you and the task force are no longer a part of this battle. Please stay out of our way. This is the reality of things. However, if you still wish to capture Kira and continue to cooperate with me. Just keep an eye on him like you’ve been doing. That’s the best thing you can do for me and this investigation.”
“Just keep an eye on him…”
“That’s right. Anything more will just be a nuisance to me. The plan is almost set, and I do not want you to do anything that may disrupt it. Kira is also in the midst of coming up with a plan to defeat me. As such, any moves on your part will be a waste of time.”
“Are you saying that we’re of no significance now?”
“No. There is a significance in keeping an eye on L, and that is a part of my plan. And that is how I want you to cooperate with me in order to bring down Kira.” He lined up the figurines made of the task force. “Kira kills people without a second thought as if they were bugs, but it’s very likely that he will keep you all alive until time comes to fight face to face with me. I want you to see this through to the end, to Kira’s defeat.”
Silence.
“Mr Aizawa…?”
“Okay.”
She did feel for the guy. If someone said that she couldn't do anything of use, she'd be unhappy too.
December 31 Happy birthday, Raye, Naomi thought. Kira will go down and I’ll be thinking of you the whole time.
She held her phone away from her ear as Misa Amane screamed in the backseat of Lidner’s car. “She’s temperamental isn’t she?”
“Yup,” Rester said.
“I guess Kiyomi’s angry at me again, but this’ll teach her a lesson. She’s lost face now as the host of the show!” Amane said.
“Is the lesson going to be not letting her perform on NHN again?” Naomi asked, rolling her eyes.
“What is it, L?” Near asked.
“Mogi and Misa Amane have gone missing.”
“Yes. I’ve taken the liberty of bringing them into my custody.”
The task force began cussing Near out.
“What for?” L asked.
Near smirked. “Just to be on the safe side.”
Silence. Naomi was beginning to wish they’d put away their dicks and rulers.
“Near, kidnapping and confining people is criminal! Please stop, this instant!”
You sound like you’re chastising a child instead of trying to order Near to let your employee and one of your girlfriends go, Naomi thought.
“Well, Mr Mogi and Amane have agreed to cooperate with me. They won’t be staying with me, but you can talk to them if you want to. Should I connect you to them?”
“I must find out if they are safe, and if what you’re saying is true, then connect me to them.”
“Sure.” He patched L through to the mic in Mogi and Misa’s room.
“Mogi, Misa, it’s L. I heard you’ve been imprisoned by Near, but is it true that you agreed to it?”
“Yes,” Mogi said.
“Mochi said that it would be better for us to stay put until the whole Kira ordeal is over. If not, we might all be killed, so I’m fine with that. I just want to live happily with my boyfriend once Kira’s caught.”
Naomi’s chest panged. I wanted that too, she thought.
“Very well. If you two are fine with that. There are no problems, but please remember you can leave any time you want to. I’ll be switching back to speak with Near now. Near, I’ve talked with them, and I’m okay with everything.”
She ducked her head as she wiped her eyes. I don’t think Near’s too inclined to be asking for permission or your forgiveness.
“L, if I pose as you and announce to the world about the existence of the notebook and of my speculations on who Kira really is, a lot of people will probably believe me. If I do that, there are definitely going to be people who’ll try to kill Kira, but Kira isn’t going to just stand there and be killed. He’ll make use of his worshippers to try and stop that. I don’t want such meaningless bloodshed to occur. So I’ll bring this to an end by defeating Kira myself.”
L’s tone rankled. The condescension and babying she’d put up with for a long time, whether it was at a boss or coworker’s hands, and L was just another shitheel boss who thought he knew better than someone else of arguably more expertise.
“Near, your speculations are wrong. You mustn’t announce to the world what is a mere assumption on your part.”
“You’re right. I’m going to end this by pinning solid proof right in front of Kira’s face. But if my assumptions are wrong, then… Well, even if my assumptions are correct, but if I lose to Kira, then the world will no doubt be his. When that happens, Kira will kill me and all of those who are aware of the notebook’s existence. Only then is it a complete victory for Kira.”
“Near, the world is close to being Kira’s perfect world already, so we must capture him as soon as possible. That is the only point on which I agree with you today.”
“ … Anyway, it’s incredibly likely that Misa Amane was the second Kira who had the Shinigami eyes. Therefore, I’ve decided to keep her contact in case Kira wants to use her again. I intend to keep her here until the Kira incident comes to an end. Rather, until I give her permission to leave. L, I’m sure you’re well aware of the present situation even if I don’t say any more.”
The task force debated this current situation.
“Apart from the fact that he leaves his office at slightly different times depending on his workload, Mikami’s habits are completely fixed. He’s also a bit of a neat freak,” Gevanni relayed.
“And every Thursday and Sunday, he attends the gym from nine to 10:30 pm?” Near asked.
“Yes. I’ve become a member myself to do research on that. Ever since he joined four years ago, he’s been going to the gym on those days at that time. Near Year’s day 2006 was a Sunday, and he went to the gym on that day as well. The only reason I can think of for him to have picked a hotel gym that’s open all year is because he wants to go on those specific days at that time.”
“Then I suppose it’s safe to say that he’ll be going there on the 31st.”
Naomi clenched her teeth. She’d almost forgotten in the midst of all this.
“Well. Yes. I don’t see a reason why he wouldn’t. I don’t believe he’s devout Shinto or goes to the temples.”
Near paused. “Gevanni, is it possible for you to touch the notebook at the gym on the 31st?”
“I’ll probably be able to. The lock on his bag won’t be an issue, but the location may be… No matter, either way.”
“Have you checked on the security system at the hotel?”
“Yes. There’s surveillance cameras inside the hotel, but none in the locker room for obvious reasons.”
“Right. If Mikami is at the gym on New Year’s, touch the notebook. Takada will be hosting the show, but I’ll distract L just in case.”
“What are the chances that a Shinigami is possessing him?”
“I don’t believe there’s one near him, but I’m asking you to touch the notebook to check that. If there is one, then that’s that. I’m going to have to think of another plan. Even if you want to touch the notebook and don’t see the Shinigami, I want you to keep your eye on him for a while to be sure that there is no Shinigami possessing him.”
“But if there is, I’ll probably die, right?”
“Yes. If you’re scared, I can have Rester do it.”
“It’s all right. I’ll do it.”
“Please be extra careful not to be noticed by Mikami either.”
“Of course.”
“Mikami and Gevanni would have left the hotel around eleven, and then he tails Mikami back to his house. It should be about time for Gevanni to call us,” Rester said. He took off his suit jacket and placed it over the back of a chair.
“Ooh, I can’t do anything until they catch Kira… Why am I here anyway?” Misa Amane whined.
“I’m surprised you didn’t say 2300 hours. You’re supposed to be a commander,” Naomi said.
“Very funny, Maki.”
“I try.”
Near’s thoughts were somewhere else: “Misa Amane, the person suspected of being the second Kira by the first L…”
Rester said, “But she didn’t say anything even when she was confined for more than 50 days. I don’t think you can get any information from her. Anyway, we’re talking about a notebook that can kill people. It probably has powers beyond comprehension. Of course, trying to find that out is our job, but…”
“I know. I wasn’t expecting to get any new information from Amane. This is only so Gevanni will feel a little easier about touching the notebook and in case Kira needs her eyes.”
A notification went up that Gevanni was onscreen. “It’s Gevanni. How’d it go?”
“I’ve successfully touched the notebook. But I haven’t confirmed the presence of the Shinigami yet.” He checked his watch. “I touched the notebook at 9:09. Mikami returned home at 12:07 and I tailed him back to his house.”
“And during those three hours, you didn’t see the Shinigami, is that right?’
“Yes.”
“Please continue to keep an eye on him.”
“Okay.”
“Commander Rester, please connect me to Mr Mogi. Mr Mogi, do you remember the rules of death when Higuchi was doing those death meetings at Yotsuba?’
“The rules of death? That sounds scary…,” Misa Amane said. Naomi rolled her eyes. Of course, she’d been in the job for roughly a decade, she’s desensitized. Though if Misa Amane is the second Kira, she ought to be too.
“I disagree with you when it comes to your assessment of Kiyomi Takada’s assessment, but if you called Amane stupid, I wouldn’t disagree.”
“Mm.”
Mogi looked up. “I do. It’s been quite a while now, but…”
“In return for information on Mello, I was told by the new L about the rules written inside the notebook and about the rules of death. If a person is to die of an illness, unless it takes longer for that illness to progress, the notebook is able to control people for up to 23 days before their deaths. Is that right?” Near poked at his Mogi figurine.
“Yes. It’s not that we tested it out ourselves, but the killings at Yotsuba proved that.”
“Thank you very much.” Near shut off the PA and added, “Then let us consider the possibility that there is a Shinigami possessing Mikami’s notebook, and it has already told Mikami that Gevanni has touched the notebook. Hence, Gevanni is actually being controlled by the notebook to say that Mikami doesn’t have a Shinigami with him. So we’re going to face L if Gevanni is still alive 24 days from now.”
Naomi’s eyebrows shot up. That was a gamble that she considered the former and current L to make, not…
“However, Maki, I’m going to move the plan ahead under the assumption that he will still be alive.”
NearlyMellodraMattic headcanons
I'm obsessed with these three lads so I felt like compiling some of my headcanons!!
Near:
- He has minor amnesia and doesn't remember anything before entering Wammy's House when he was around five. Nothing. This amnesia might be the result of him coping with a traumatic event in his past, but even he doesn't know.
- He's easily grossed out. Not by any traditional sense tho, mostly by things that trigger sensory issues (touching dirt, for example).
- On that note he has really bad trypophobia. Like, it can make him sick.
- He loses like ALL reasoning ability when he's around Matt. Like, stupid shit he'd normally not do he'd do with Matt. Matt's one of the few people that can bring out Near's silly side (and also one of the VERY FEW people that can manage to make him laugh!!)
- this ones practically canon but Near is autistic. Thankfully due to Wammy's specialized education he's better at managing it, but he still can't work without some assistance. He has sensory issues, bad at conveying and processing emotions, stims, hyperfixates, doesn't know jack about social cues, etc.
- In relation to that, he HATES thunderstorms. The sudden loud and bright noises/flashes and the general "impending doom" feeling they give him freaks him out. He tries not to show it, though.
- Him and Matt could VS in Tetris for HOURS. There's a 50/50 chance either will win.
- Near suffers from depression and existential crises. It got ESPECIALLY bad after the Kira case once Mello and Matt were gone. (Suicidal thoughts were not uncommon, although he never acted on any of them or planned to.)
- Matt introduced him to online gaming. Near has been playing Webkinz ever since.
- Near is probably really perverted. Won't give any indication of it, however.
- He likes wearing overly large pajamas so he can do the Sleeve Flap Thingy.
- Obsessed with early 90s CGI box art for like computer games and shit. He just loves it.
- He has poor as shit health and multiple vitamin deficiencies and chronic illnesses.
Mello:
- Before coming to Wammy's House, he grew up in a poor urban area with a physically abusive father. He'd go to the public library or steal books when he could, as he had a fascination with learning. Due to this upbringing, however, he has a very strong "fight to survive" mentality: always pushing himself beyond his limits as if his life depended on it and being very, very agressive with others.
- He has minor ADHD.
- Also due to his mental state and nature, he has a really hard time showing that he loves or cares about others, which can lead to him losing them down the line.
- (He almost cried when Matt admitted he thought Mello hated him.)
- He's, what we in the industry call, pansexual.
- He's always eating chocolate because a) the snap is satisfying and calms him down, b) sugar = energy, c) cuz chocolate is fuckin' good.
- His favorite subject is science and philosophy.
- He's actually a really good singer!! He can do a lot of different pitches (him and Matt have def had a drunk karaoke night).
- He's not necessarily religious, and if you asked if he was he'd say "no", but whenever he's scared or feels hopeless he'll clutch the cross on his necklace and pray. (He did this when he knew he was about to die, and recited some prayers under his breath).
- While he doesn't tell people, Mello is actually an amazing artist. Painting, mostly. (He doesn't do it often though. He thinks it's girly smh.)
- Speaks fluent English, Japanese, and German. He may also have German ancestry.
Matt:
- WEALTH OF GAMER KNOWLEDGE. Literally ask him anything that has to relate to video games, he'll know the answer.
- He actually has the compacity to become the smartest Wammy's Kid, even above Near. He wasn't born a genius like Near was, but he could definitely reach a higher level than Near. He just lacks the passion or drive someone like Mello has to actually do better.
- He has really, really terrible anxiety. Video games help him escape reality and shut his mind away from the world, and smoking helps calm his nerves. When he gets panic attacks, it's not uncommon he's unable to speak during them or that he might pass out.
- He enjoys petting Near's hair (when Near lets him); he named a Mareep after Near.
- He also has a psychic-like connection with Near?? Like, they can just look at each other and instantly know what the other is thinking. This makes them a scary duo in Smash Bros. tag team.
- Desite Mello being a bit of an ass, he considers him his best friend. He just finds everything about Mello endearing and fun, even if he can get a bit pushy or annoying at times.
- Though, he often wonders if Mello actually cares about him as a friend, or just hates him. It's the Anxiety™
- Despite how laid back and goofy he is, he's quite introverted and barely talks to people. Usually Mello has to be the one to drag him outside.
- CONSTANTLY forgets or foregoes words and replaces them with nonsense. One time he interrupted L talking about his life as Hideki Ryuga, "...so since my bookbag was heavy and I had to lift my arms up, my shoulders-" "oh, so your shoulders are gayass now?" Matt finishes for him without thinking. Of course he means his shoulders are sore now, and Mello and Near know this and don't even question it or bat an eye, but L just stops and has to think about it for like a minute.
- Doesn't actually want to be L's sucessor. Was kind of forced here because he was Smart.
- For personal reasons, he doesn't like nor celebrate his birthday. Nobody in Wammy's knows his real birthdate except for himself. Everyone else just decided to celebrate his birthday on March 10.
- Has the attention span of a fly. You have to basically strap him to a chair to get him to pay attention to something he finds boring.
- When his anxiety acts up he will aplogize for every little thing. For laughing, for stuttering, for coughing—and especially for crying. Mello as a young child said Matt's crying was annoying, so it's something he's internalized (unbeknownst to Mello).
L x Light fic (WIP)
L. Lawliet was the type of guy in high school that had no friends, girlfriend and just talk with people when is necessary to... had the best grades whitout even trying. He was so mysterious and different! Some classmates find him so strange and creepy, but most of the girls had a crush on him (because although he was a bit wild and different with his peculiar way to seat, strange habits to eat sugared stuffs all time, using the same clothes every day...) he was actually very acttractive.
25/10/06 A new student came to the class 3, his name was Light Yagami. A young brown haired guy who was in exchange on England from Japan. He was good at speaking English so he made friends so easily... Light Yagami was exentric and he was those kinda of person who thinks that the world works in his function!
In a certain day, specifically Friday 31 October, the class 3 of the 3th grade recived the result of their math test. Almost everyone failed and recived a bad one! Light was confident that he was going to be only one successful at the test, then he recived it with a confident smile in face... He wasn’t that bad but he also wasn’t the best. When he heard the teacher say :
- as always , the best result was L’s ! Congratulations! - Light Yagami looked at his left and found there an weird skinny boy with hair in face, that guy took the test from the teacher’s had and said nothing, continuing licking the lollipop he had in his mouth.
- the second best was our new student! Light Yagami. She said looking at him , so the entire class did the same. Except of that emo guy.
Light was mad ! He hate being the second in everything, he hates being underrated by someone! When the lunchtime came, he asked Emma Sinclaire, the classrom leader who was that guy and why he always had the best grades? Emma said :
- that guy is L. Lawliet, he is son of the most rich man of the city; Wammy Quilish! He’s a type of weird genius who doesn’t need even to do an effort to get these good grades. He have no friends, no girfriends, he doesn’t talk with no one and is always eating! Even having many girls who find him attractive and crush him.
- oh, i haven’t noticed him till now... /said Light putting his tumb on the chin\
- It’s because he missed classes since u showed up.
- You seem to notice him a lot. Hahah! /said Light\
- o-oh ! I- I - don’t is just that i... am responsible of the class so... / said Emma with a big blush on her face\
- o-ok! Anyway I’m going lunch! Thank u for informations... /said Light with a warm smile\
He was going to the cafeteria next school when he sees Lawliet going to the same place, Light got more excited to go there and try to have a talk with him. He made an evil smile when he heard two girls saying :
- yes he’s going to lunch here as always! /said the blond one pointing to the cafeteria \
- maybe we’ll be the lucky ones who will get a talk with L! /said the brown haired one\
He watched them entering to the cafeteria, they looked like 14, 15 years. Light could see by the mirror that they tried to speak something with L and he said no! The two girls got out with an angry face saying “how he dare to say no to us! Aff” It seems that he is rude with the girls who crush him. Light knew what L feel because in Japan almost all the girls did the same to him, they were so boring but Light was not so .... direct ... with em. Actually he kinda used to manipulate some of them to get things. Had a famous model called Misa Amane who was very beautiful and famous in Japan who crushed Light. And used her to get friendship whith important people and recognizement! There was also a boring one called Kiyomi Takada, she was called “miss toho” and she crushed light too. He used her to be his assistant and take things for him like “hey i wanna a coffe bish”.
When Light enter the cafeteria he can see engaze L and he does the same. Both eyes encountered and Light could feel a strange feeling of his heart beating fast! L was really attractive and had a sexy vibe, the way that his black hair falls into his pale skin... The young japanese had a strange feeling and was lost in his toughts when he hears the voice of a woman saying “ so what will be ?”
- ah, an frapuccino with a natural sandwich please! /he answered \
- ok! You can take your seat and i’ll bring to you.
Light was walking around and he was hesitant to ask, but thats the why he camed to the cafeteria... so he encouraged himself and walked in L’s direction and said :
- can i seat here with you? We’re classmates ... I’m on exchange from Japan. I arrived in school have 6 days... /L looked at him while he was eating an amount of different sweets and desserts and just pointed his hand to the chair in agreement \
- so , you like sweets right? It’s because is halloween maybe? Haha /said Light putting his hand on his hair and giving a shy laugh \
- I eat it everyday. / answered Lawliet. His voice was apathic , low and sexy.
-what about these girls? I mean i had these type of girls around me in Japan and sometimes i wish i was strong pulse with them like you...
- I didn’t meant to be rude with them, is never my intention at all. They just asked me if i want to make out with both and i said no. / L replied with a piece of cake in mouth\
- you right! They are quite young ...
- I like Japan / L said unemotionally as all his phrases\
_ oh! You like Japan? / Light replied surprised that he said something and about his interess)
-yes. / L answered and took a sip on his coffe.\
- You have been there? /Light\
- Yes. /L\
- what u most like there? /Light\
- food. /L\
- haha, you like eating do you? Is just weird how u still have this good ... physique. / Light said hesistating in his last words when he saw what he was going to say.\
Light’s food arrived and he immediately took a sip of his frapuccino. Maybe with mouth full he wouldn’t say bullshits...
- you too for someone drinking a frapuccino full of fat and caramel. /Answered L looking at him.\
- hahah! I think we’re both lucky with our metabolism / answered Light giving a shy laugh to try hide his blush face again\
- yes i think so. /L\
Light looked at his clock and the class would start in 10 minutes and he said :
- i think we might go ...
- yes. / said L while he stands up showing how tall he would be if had a nice posture\
- btw, we talked this entire moment and I didn’t introduced myself, I’m Light Yagami.
-L. Lawliet. But I think you already knew it... /he stated giving his back to Light and getting out of the cafeteria\
When the class started Light starred at Lawliet the entire class wondering what he meant by “ i think you already knew it” that he didn’t had count that the bells ringed, just when the class was almost empty exept by L an some guys talking is the background. He was leaving when he heard a voice calling his name, he turned and it was L :
- Light i was wondering if you would like to come at my house today and have some movie? / Light wasn’t expecting for it! He tought it would take time to get his confidence and become his friend... but it was so fast\
- yes sure. /Light replied with a soft smile in face\
- ok, come with me cause my father will bring us by car. /L said\
-ok /Light\
When the car arrived was a black limusine with a old man with mustache driving it. L took his place in the back place of the car so did Light, it was a silence since the old man spoke and said :
- L never hang out with school classmates. You must be special what’s your name?
-oh , my name is Light Yagami sir. I’m in exchange from Japan...
CONTINUE.... it’s supposed to be one shot but I’m gonna post later...
Lawrence had been running for some minutes now. The young boy, with only the clothes he had on his body, was running across the streets, in that cold winter day. The snow bothered a little, and his hands felt cold even with the gloves, but he still ran with all of his might.
If he didn't, that woman would end up reaching him eventually.
His mother had been drinking since his father left, and today was the worse time. She had a knife with her, and was searching around for "that little brat" — before he could understand what was happening, Lawrence had thrown one of her empty bottles at her head, taken his coat, scarf and gloves and ran off of the house, while she groaned on the floor.
The only good thing his mother did to him was teach him to always carry money on his coat, so he could buy her beer. At the first opportunity, he called out for a cab, trying to remember a good place to go — somewhere affordable, of course — so she wouldn't find him again. A bigger city near his own, named Winchester, was the first thing on his mind. One of his neighbors, a young boy who had his age, mentioned a toy store.
"Go to this address", Lawrence asked, his shaky voice coming out a little louder than he wanted it to be. "I need you to go there as fast as you can, sir; my younger brother ran away and mum said he might be there."
Lying was a skill needed to survive. He felt dirty for doing it at first, but with time, he realized it was the only way out of the hellhole of a life he had. The man seemed surprised, but seeing the money on the boy's hands and how determined he was to get to Winchester, he complied.
He couldn't remember the last time he had a nap. It was hard to sleep with his mother's screams and the sounds of vomiting, and his eyebags were bigger than the other kid's in the neighborhood.
But there, on the cab, he felt his consciousness drifting off, and he smiled for the first time in years.
┗•─━━━━━⊱【❆】⊰━━━━━─•┛
When he woke up, his light sleep being interrupted by the driver's voice calling him, he felt lighter. Resting had been a good thing, and he quickly got out of the car, leaving all of his money on the backseat. He had no time to think, and he knew he would have a really short amount of change anyway.
The cab left as soon as he was on the ground, and he started to walk again, without any place to go.
He could try to find a warm place to sleep. If he was lucky enough, he could sell his gloves and get some food, before looking for a definitive place to stay. The young Lachfeild took them out of his hands, holding them lightly with his little fingers.
That was when someone bumped on him, his gloves falling into the street.
"...!! My gloves!", he cried out, trying to get to them before a car appeared.
He was pulled back, a car barely missing his small arm.
With a big frown, he thought about turning back, but a hand was on his shoulder. He froze on the spot, gulping. He slowly turned, seeing the person who had stopped him: an old man, who seemed to be on his fifties, with white hair and a big moustache, wearing a suit and a weird hat that looked like half of a ball — the little boy didn't know what type of hat it was, back then —, both being black. The small Lawrence was relieved to not see the familiar face of his mother, but rather that of a stranger.
"You should be more careful, boy", the man said, in a calm and kind tone. He was happy to receive this type of treatment, instead of yelling and threatening, but he kept his frightened face. "Are you alone? Where is your mother?"
What lie should he tell the man? He could easily trick him into giving him shelter, if he was this kind to a completely unknown child. Without much effort, he started to cry — genuine tears, but ones that he forced by thinking of what would happen if he came back home.
"I don't know...", he sobbed, covering his small face with his hands. "I heard yelling and crying and there was this man— dad told me to run and I did, but... But I heard a gun... Like in the m-movies..."
The old man comforted him, patting his head and telling him he would bring him into a better place while he tried to reach his parents — he nodded, satisfied on the results, but still pretending to be crying.
He told him his name — Quillsh Wammy. He had read about him; a great inventor, who owned numerous orphanages and who had a vast fortune. He was lucky — his orphanages would be better than his mother's raising, ten thousand times better than anything she could give him.
"What is your name?", he heard Wammy ask, taking his hand. He said he would guide him into a happy home full of children, in which he would shower and sleep, have a roof above his head and a nice, loving family
His malnourished body seemed to be noticed, since he barely ate at home, for Quillsh also mentioned candies.
Candies were rare in Lawrence's life. The last time he ate one was when he stole it from his mother's purse.
"...I don't have a name", he lied. "But you can call me L."
