Let me in
B.Barnes x Reader, S.Rogers x Stark!Reader
series synopsis:  y/n Stark, all records of her non existent, and yet Hydra still find her. When she is kidnapped by a certain super-soldier and no one believes her, she finds herself searching for unexpected familiarity in her not-so-distant past.
Series Warnings: smut, violence, torture, swearing
Chapter Summary: y/n gets emotional
Warnings: swearing, feelings
A/n: The timeline in this has been altered, as there I things I wanted to include but I also wanted this fic to follow the storyline/timeline of Winter Soldier and Civil war.So for purposes of this fanfic, Peter Parker was discovered by Tony at a much younger age - when he was bitten - and has been an intern with him since, almost like a protégée.(For the purposes of this story Peter was bitten much younger too - more like when he was 9 or ten rather than 14/15)

Life at the tower was...tiring, to say the least. During my free time I often found myself in the gym, lobbing knives at a target and trying my hardest not to biting one in Steve's chest every time he would correct my technique. When I wasn't trying to murder the avenger in cold blood, I was usually dragged into things by the other: briefings and debriefing for missions I'd never go on, my dad's parties, group training sessions and study periods with Bruce in his labs to name a few.
But for now, I was huddled in my rooms - fresh out of a hot shower after a brutal two hour training session and four mile run with Natasha - curled up on my bed and attempting to catch up on a few of the films I'd missed. But the exhaustion and drowsiness clouded my eyes, the noise from the TV merely in the background as I felt my eyes growing heavier by the second.
A sharp knock at the door snapped my out of my lowsey state, the people movie across the screen simple a blur of colour as my eyes darted past the tv and over to the door.
"Mr Stark is waiting at your door. Would you like me to let him in?" FRIDAY's evenly calm voice chimed, making me groan and mumble a 'no' into my pillows. The last person I wanted to see right now was my dad.
"Come on kid, let me in." My dad called from the other side of the door, and I could practically hear him roll his eyes and shake his head when I stayed silent. When he spoke again, it wasn't directed at me. "FRIDAY, override command and open the door."
"Wait! That's hardly fair!" I whined like a five year old, groaning again when the door swung open and my dad stood on the other side, quite clearly just as exhausted as I was.
"Get used to it, kiddo. Life isn't fair." Tony chided, walking over to my bed. I tried to shuffle away slightly when I felt the bed dip, my dad perching on the edge as his eyes scanned over the room. "I see you haven't decorated yet." He commented casually, as if nothing had ever happened between us.
"Yeah, well, I thought It'd be a shame to spend so much time on something when you're probably waiting to kick me out anyway." I mumbled, refusing to look at him.
"What the hell is wrong with you, y/n? Ever since you got back you've been-"
"Acting different?" I cut in, and when Tony simply swallowed thickly I nodded. "Funny that, seeing as I was kidnapped and tortured for three years. Not to mention made to kill people for another year after that."
"Y/n I'm sorry..."
"But you're not! You can't be, otherwise you'd actually have tried to save me, rather than leaving me to rot!" My voice cracked, tears pricked at my eyes and I now sat up straight in my bed, facing my dad but not looking him in the eye. "And you can't change that, you can't go back in the past and fix your mistake. And trying to fix it now sure as hell won't work, so I suggest you leave before I'm tempted to use you as my target for my training session tomorrow." I raised my voice, eyes now keeping his captive as the tears rolled freely down my cheeks.
"Oh, kid, they broke you." Tony murmured, cupping my cheek with his hand, eyes swimming with sorrow. Sorrow that I didn't want.
"You can't fix me either, because I'm not broken!" I said harsher now, voice only getting louder. "I don't need to be fixed..." I trailed off, voice barely above a whisper Joe as my eyes broke the contact, averting to my lap as the tears dropped onto the bed sheets.
That's how I found myself in my fathers arms, face pressed against his shoulder as the sobs made my body shake, hiccups escaping me as I tried to speak.
"A-all I needed W-was my D-dad, and yo- you took him f-from me!" I wailed, hands clutching my dad's shirt and his arms wrapped protectively around my shoulder, hands rubbing circles over my back soothingly.
"I know, kiddo. I'm sorry."
...
"Who is that?" Clint frowned, staring at the pictures scattered over the table in front of Natasha and Steve as they studied them deeply,  brows creased in thought.
"Our newest pain in the ass." Tony answered for them, slapping a thick folder down in front of Clint as he said so. The marksman was quick to pick it up, flicking through the documents, news stories and information sheets greedily.
"The...winter soldier?" He asked, looking at the three superheroes in front of him as if they'd gone mad. "But he's a ghost story!"
"I've seen him. Been shot by him, actually." Nat said, an sadistically proud smirk forming on her lips with her last words, almost as if it were an achievement.
"We're trying to find out more about him, maybe that way we can beat him." Steve explained, sitting back in his chair with crossed arms as he huffed in defeat, sick to death with staring at the same five pictures all morning.
Y/n walked in, a skip in her step as she crossed the room to Tony.
"Morning, dad." She greeted, placing a quick kiss to his cheek and heading over to the cupboard to grab a mug. Clint and Natasha frowned in confusion, looking between the two as if they'd witnessed pigs fly.
Tony shrugged, y/n too preoccupied with making herself a coffee to notice the avengers' reactions. When her coffee was done, y/n swiped her mug from under the machine and sipped happily, letting out a content sigh before wandering over to stand behind Natasha.
"What are you working on?" She asked, peering over the spy's shoulder to get a glimpse of the pictures.
A loud smash crashed through the room, Tony's eyes widening in shock and Natasha jumping from her seat in order to not get covered in spilt coffee. Y/n stood paralysed, eyes never leaving the photo in front of her as she started at the Soldier. Steve frowned deeply, studying the girl as her eyes glossed over with with what seemed to be...sadness.
Clint was already at her side, a comforting hand on her shoulder as they all asked y/n what had happened and if she was alright. It was like a constant ringing in her ear interrupted their words before they reached her ears, and y/n suddenly felt nauseous as she starred at the bright red star on the soldier's arm, his long and messy dark hair shrouding his face and his leather clad, muscular body. Only his cerulean blue eyes could be seen, the rest of his face covered in a black mask she didn't usually see him in.
"I-I need some air." She stuttered, stumbling blindly out of the room and down the stairs, tipping over a few steps from the bottom and tumbling down the last few. She quickly pulled herself to her feet, hearing still ringing and vision offset, hazy, as she scrambled for the double glass doors. Luckily they already stood open, so she flew through them and out into the busy streets of New York.
Y/n found herself colliding will someone almost instantly, angry shouts of 'hey, watch it!' And 'look where the fuck you're going, kid!' Being called after her like a chorus as she pushed through the bustling people.
She finally stopped, dropping to her knees and simply staring straight ahead, no intended subject in her line of vision as she tried to comprehend the-the grief, at seeing the a soldier's face again.
It had only been two weeks, and yet two weeks without him, his touch, his scent - it felt like an eternity to y/n now. She hasn't registered what her feeling meant for him before, liking him beyond a source of comfort had just felt...wrong, after all he'd done, and yet y/n couldn't deny it.
She was in love with the Winter Soldier, and she didn't even know his name.
...
I wasn't aware of when someone had found me, nor of how they got me back to the tower or even how I was now stood staring blankly out of the window that stood next to my bed. I gazed longingly, almost as if I stared long enough, hard enough, he'd appear.
But of course he wouldn't, he was probably half way across the world, knowing HYDRA. A soft knock on my door and my head was turning, facing my visitor with a look of pure grief and want. Desperate, unhinged want that could eat you up from inside out and you'd still feel it.
"Hey, y/n. Can I talk to you for a moment?" Nat asked tentatively, clearing trying to to disturb my shaken up state. I nodded, offering a small smile which she returned as I now faced her. She walked up to me, talking my hands him hers and playing with the as she spoke, eyes kind and full of understanding.
"There's a mission, and we want you to go." She said calmly, almost as if the mere thought of it would send me into some kind of heart attack.
"Okay," I begun, eyes flitting down to the floor before back up again. "What is it? Aren't you scared that I'm still HYDRA and all I'd do is stab someone in the back?"
"Not exactly." Nat informed me with a smile, amusement glinting in her eyes at my assumption. "For starters, we all trust you, well maybe not steve - but everyone else does." Nat and I both laughed slightly. "And I think you wouldn't have it any other way it to go on the mission yourself." Nat finished.
"How come?" I asked, brow raised.
"There's been a lead..." she started. "On the winter soldier. We thought you might want to help check it out, possibly capture him. Your powers may be the best chance we have a detaining someone as strong as him." Nat spoke. "And if we can detain him.."
"We can save him." I finished.
"Exactly."

Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader
Warnings: Broken Bonky Babie, Avengers are teasing little shits, Steve leaves like in the movies and doesn’t come back (I want to kill him for that), Fluff, Shy Bonky and Y/N, Liddle angst, Both idiots doubt themselves, Y/N likes beating the fuck out of bullies a.k.a Violence, steamy stuff but not smut ( cuz I don’t write smut”
Summary: Someone managed to make Bucky accept the fact that everyone can heal.
..............
Мой целитель ; (pronounced: Moy tselitel') Russian for My Healer
War never ends. It just rests. One day someone will come to ask your help that is when the rest of war is over again.
That is what Bucky has always been of the belief ever since before and after endgame. Ever since Steve left, most of Bucky did too. Yes, he had Sam and the others but Steve was the only part of his original past left and he couldn’t even stop him.
He decided that the rest period for his war conflicted heart had started when Clint had offered him a place to live at his farmhouse to ‘heal and stay away from the space bullshit’.
Not to brag but he had fit right into the little family. The kids loved Uncle Bucky and Laura appreciated the extra help she got with the house. Sam and Natasha would come by every two days and the rest every once a week. They would go visit a bar and hang out. That was Bucky’s life now. That was his routine.
Clint had sudddenly announced one fine weekly team hangout day that his long time best friend would be joining them. Bucky couldn’t care less. He had seen people come in and out of the Barton house all the time. Most sending him glares due to his past. He couldn’t blame them. Not when he knew he would do the same in different set of circumstances.
But he was proved wrong. Y/N was an angel. More so to him. Not a single glare was directed at him by her the entire time. She just smiled sweetly. Maybe he did care a little bit.
Y/N turned out to be Lila and Cooper, Clint’s first two children’s godmother. She had finally come home after 15 years of being in and out of the country for her job. Clint had mentioned that every time she came back she would first visit the kids not forgetting to bring them gifts from everywhere and how the snap had worried her. So Bucky was not surprised when he had to get three kids off of her as she entered the house. His heart swelled when she said ‘Thank You’, although everyone said that.
He was unusually getting attached to her and that scared him.
After Steve attatchment was difficult. Trust was difficult. But Y/N made it seem like child's play. She somehow completely saw through him. Almost as if she knew everything about him and he was confused by that.
Especially at those little moments when he felt hesitant.
Bucky was a handsome man no doubt and that meant some women were confident enough to ask hit on him everytime he was out at a restaurant or a bar with the others. Y/N would join them quite often and on one such day she saved Bucky from his anxiety issues.
"Hey.....you come here quite often.....can I buy you a drink ?", a very confident girl had managed to come up to the table and asked Bucky who looked at her with eyes as blown out as big as saucers and immediately looked down stuttering as he tried to politely reject the lady. A hand carefully wrapped around his metal arm as he realized Y/N had said "I'm sorry he's taken", before sending the girl as kind smile which had lead to Bucky's hair-hidden neck to go red.
Bucky had excused himself to the washroomas the rest relentlessly teased his popularity but he had not noticed Y/N following suit.
"I'm sorry", she had apologised leaving the other puzzled again. "W-why?" "I should have asked before touching you....I know-I know you don't like being touched....I'm sorry". There was pure sincerity in her voice "NO!",his own voice startled him and her as she looked at him in confusion. "I-I mean I'm glad....You helped me out there......Also.....",there was hesitation in Bucky's heart, "Also....I don't mind if you touch me Y/N".
That day onwards something changed. Significantly so, Bucky found himself calling and hanging out with Y/N more. She filled his thoughts would be one way of saying that and the Avengers noticed. So the next time Bucky tried to sneak out of the farm when the others were there Sam noticed, “Hey Hey Hey ! Where are you sneakin to ?”. The other stood frozen like a deer in the headlights staring down at his best friend like he had been caught doing something he shouldn’t be. Nat smirked as she bit on her grilled cheese sandwich sing songing, “He’s going to meet Y/N~~”Bucky grumbled a little ‘Shut up Nat’ before taking the car out towards the bar.
“Buck !”, she had yelled waving as he smiled and pulled her into his arms for a hug and staying like that for a few minutes both eventually hesitantly letting go. Joe the bartender already having set up their regular drinks showed how often they frequented the place, even having seats that were almost always empty for just the two of them.
After meeting Y/N, Bucky realised new things about himself. He liked sweet stuff more than savoury. He liked playing games at the arcade. He was definately much more open to technology than Steve ever was. He liked being spoiled and babied. And he was extremely serious about board games. He knew all this because Y/N made him realize that.
That day he found out another thing. He likes staring at Y/N looking at the sunset. In other words he likes Y/N. But he had promised himself to not act on it. He didn’t want to loose her. Not now, not ever.
Walking through a dark alley way was not something Bucky liked but with Y/N it was something he was starting to hate. Y/N is beautiful. Obliviously so. He could sense sleazy men staring at her but chose to stay put. But we all know that rouse wasn’t going to stay put for long considering a group of 3 men surrounding the two of them all eyeing Y/N. “Hey sweetheart why don’t you come with us ? We counld have a darn sweet night”, exclaimed the one that looked like the leader as the other two laughed behind him. “Back off”, Bucky had warned. He didn’t want to fight. He felt like he’d embarrass himself before Y/N. “Ohhh look who it is The Winter Soldier”, the other said mockingly. “What are you going to do? Kill me? You don’t have Captain America now to back you up do you ?”. Before Bucky could even reply the third guy let out a scream at which everyone turned to look at him to see him cradling what seemed like a freshly broken wrist and before he could even react the second one went flying into a pile of trash (where he belongs) and the main commentator’s head was being bashed strait onto the road by Y/N’s hand. “No, but he does does have an ex-black ops now turned into a CIA Agent to back him up”, she quipped seethingly through her teeth.
Bucky said nothing. His brain was still processing the information he was bombarded with. He walked Y/N to her car and drove back to Clint’s all while still processing.
So when Sam (who was just about to leave) asks “How was it ?” Bucky looks him in the eye and goes.
“I’m in love with Y/N.”
Tony had decided to prank Clint one fine day and told everyone that Clint was hosting a sleepover. So that meant Clint had to accomodated several idiots into his farmhouse. Within this chaos he also had a very great idea.
So when Y/N was pushed into Bucky’s room both stopped functioning.
Y/N spotted him angrily whispering into is phone as she got out of the shower. Throwing his phone into oblivion ,startled, when she called name out suddenly. “Y-You’re done ? Uhhhh you can take the bed doll, I’ll take the floor”,Bucky hates the floor but if it meant Y/N would be comfortable, he’d be ready to sleep on a block of ice. “Nope definately not ! We can share the damn bed Buck the floor uncomfortable !”, she argued. “ No Y/N you don’t understand I can’t !” “WHY! IS IT BECAUSE I MADE YOU UNCOMFORTABLE AFTER THAT DAY ?”, there was a grave silence between the two. He knew exactly what she was talking about. Bucky’s eyes soften and for the first time he realizes that he had never thaken the effort to know more about Y/N. He was focused on her helping him find himself. “Why would you say that ?” ,he said softly as he moved towards her and she moved backwards. “Because it is what it is isn’t it?”, she retorted. “NO IT IS NOT !”, Bucky sighed as he sat on the bed and watched the woman of importance as she paced around the room. “Why then Bucky ? You’ve been distant from me since that day....” “You won’t understand.....” “Try me” “I’M IN LOVE WITH YOU OKAY !”
12 minutes. It had been 12 minutes since Y/N had froze and stared at Bucky.
“Shut up. You’re lying” , she finally said.
“What ? No ! Why would I lie about that”,Bucky argued
“Because ! You are James Buchanan Barnes ! One of the most attractive men I have seen in my life period.”
“And here I’m the one firmly believing someone like me doesn’t even stand a change with someone as pretty as you.”
“See, you’re lying again”
“Doll, shut up before I will have to make you”, he warned
“Don’t make empty threats that you won’t fulfill James”, she challenged.
And with that Bucky has Y/N slammed into the bed , his mouth moving roughly along her’s as she puts her arms around his. There was something different about this Bucky. Y/N felt every single pent up frustration that the man kissing her had felt supressing his feelings had felt.
Soon enough they seperated, finally gasping for air. Bucky plopped beside Y/N as she placed her palm on his cheek rubbing a thumb over it while smiling at him blissfully.
“Take my hand
Take my whole life too
For I can't help falling in love with you”
“I love you...”, she said and somehow Bucky knew he had tears running down his cheeks. He curled into her arms. Clint’s loud speakers playing Elvis as the two dozed off to sleep. But Bucky waited for her to doze off, kissing her forehead as he ran his metal arm through her hair.
“Мой целитель, I love you too”, he said.
He wasn’t alone anymore. He was healed. His internal war had ended forever. That’s all he ever wanted. That’s all he was thankful for.
---The End---

It’s bold of Nolan to make such a thoroughly dense blockbuster. He assumes people will actually want to see ~Lelki ismeretek more than once so they can understand it properly, which some may not. This movie makes the chronology of Inception look as simplistic as tic-tac-toe. Ergo, it’s hard for me to give an accurate rating, without having seen it twice, as I’m still trying to figure out whether everything does indeed make sense. If it does, this movie is easily a 9 or 10. If it doesn’t, it’s a 6. It’s further not helped by the fact that the dialogue in the first 15 minutes of the movie is painfully hard to understand / hear. Either they were behind masks; they were practically mumbling; the sound effects were too loud; or all of the above. The exposition scenes are also waayyy too brief for something this complex — a problem also shared with Interstellar actually. (Interstellar had this minimalist exposition problem explaining Blight, where if you weren’t careful, you’d miss this one sentence / scene in the entire movie explaining that Blight was a viral bacteria: “Earth’s atmosphere is 80% nitrogen, we don’t even breathe nitrogen. Blight does, and as it thrives, our air gets less and less oxygen”). I guess it’s a Nolan quirk. Hopefully, a revision of the film audio sorts the sound mixing out. I do like the soundtrack, but it’s too loud initially. I liked all the actors. You think John Washington can’t act at first, but he can, and he grows on you as the film progresses. And Pattinson is his usual charming self. Elizabeth is a surprise treat. And so on. Its worth a watch either way. See it with subtitles if you can. And definitely don’t expect to fully understand whats going on the first time around. Its one hell of a complicated film. It will be very hard for an average viewer to gather all the information provided by this movie at the first watch. But the more you watch it, more hidden elements will come to light. And when you are able to put these hidden elements together. You will realize that this movie is just a “masterpiece” which takes the legacy of Christopher Nolan Forward If I talk about acting, Then I have to say that Robert Pattinson has really proved himself as a very good actor in these recent years. And I am sure his acting skills will increase with time. His performance is charming and very smooth. Whenever he is on the camera, he steals the focus John David Washington is also fantastic in this movie. His performance is electrifying, I hope to see more from him in the future. Other characters such as Kenneth Branagh, Elizabeth, Himesh Patel, Dimple Kapadia, Clémence Poésy have also done quite well. And I dont think there is a need to talk about Michael Caine Talking about Music, its awesome. I dont think you will miss Hans Zimmer’s score. Ludwig has done a sufficient job. There is no lack of good score in the movie Gotta love the editing and post production which has been put into this movie. I think its fair to say this Nolan film has focused more in its post production. The main problem in the movie is the sound mixing. Plot is already complex and some dialogues are very soft due to the high music score. It makes it harder to realize what is going on in the movie. Other Nolan movies had loud BGM too. But Audio and dialogues weren’t a problem My humble request to everyone is to please let the movie sink in your thoughts. Let your mind grasp all the elements of this movie. I am sure more people will find it better. Even those who think they got the plot. I can bet they are wrong. ~Lelki ismeretek is the long awaited new movie from Christopher Nolan. The movie that’s set to reboot the multiplexes post-Covid. It’s a manic, extremely loud, extremely baffling sci-fi cum spy rollercoaster that will please a lot of Nolan fan-boys but which left me with very mixed views. John David Washington (Denzel’s lad) plays “The Protagonist” — a crack-CIA field operative who is an unstoppable one-man army in the style of Hobbs or Shaw. Recruited into an even more shadowy organisation, he’s on the trail of an international arms dealer, Andrei Sator (Kenneth Branagh in full villain mode). Sator is bullying his estranged wife Kat (Elizabeth Debicki) over custody of their son (and the film unusually has a BBFC warning about “Domestic Abuse”). Our hero jets the world to try to prevent a very particular kind of Armageddon while also keeping the vulnerable and attractive Kat alive. This is cinema at its biggest and boldest. Nolan has taken a cinema ‘splurge’ gun, filled it with money, set it on rapid fire, removed the safety and let rip at the screen. Given that Nolan is famous for doing all of his ‘effects’ for real and ‘in camera’, some of what you see performed is almost unbelievable. You thought crashing a train through rush-hour traffic in “Inception” was crazy? You ain’t seen nothing yet with the airport scene! And for lovers of Chinooks (I must admit I am one and rush out of the house to see one if I hear it coming!) there is positively Chinook-p*rn on offer in the film’s ridiculously huge finale. The ‘inversion’ aspects of the story also lends itself to some fight scenes — one in particular in an airport ‘freeport’ — which are both bizarre to watch and, I imagine, technically extremely challenging to pull off. In this regard John David Washington is an acrobatic and talented stunt performer in his own right, and must have trained for months for this role. Nolan’s crew also certainly racked up their air miles pre-lockdown, since the locations range far and wide across the world. The locations encompassed Denmark, Estonia, India, Italy, Norway, the United Kingdom, and United States. Hoyte Van Hoytema’s cinematography is lush in introducing these, especially the beautiful Italian coast scenes. Although I did miss the David Arnold strings that would typically introduce these in a Bond movie: it felt like that was missing. The ‘timey-wimey’ aspects of the plot are also intriguing and very cleverly done. There are numerous points at which you think “Oh, that’s a sloppy continuity error” or “Shame the production design team missed that cracked wing mirror”. Then later in the movie, you get at least a dozen “Aha!” moments. Some of them (no spoilers) are jaw-droppingly spectacular. Perhaps the best twist is hidden in the final line of the movie. I only processed it on the way home. And so to the first of my significant gripes with ~Lelki ismeretek. The sound mix in the movie is all over the place. I’d go stronger than that… it’s truly awful (expletive deleted)! Nolan often implements Shakespeare’s trick of having characters in the play provide exposition of the plot to aid comprehension. But unfortunately, all of this exposition dialogue was largely incomprehensible. This was due to: the ear-splitting volume of the sound: 2020 movie audiences are going to be suffering from ‘~Lelki ismeretekis’! (LOL); the dialogue is poorly mixed with the thumping music by Ludwig Göransson (Wot? No Hans Zimmer?); a large proportion of the dialogue was through masks of varying description (#covid-appropriate). Aaron Taylor-Johnson was particularly unintelligible to my ears. Overall, watching this with subtitles at a special showing might be advisable! OK, so I only have a PhD in Physics… but at times I was completely lost as to the intricacies of the plot. It made “Inception” look like “The Tiger Who Came to Tea”. There was an obvious ‘McGuffin’ in “Inception” — — (“These ‘dream levels’… how exactly are they architected??”…. “Don’t worry… they’ll never notice”. And we didn’t!) In “~Lelki ismeretek” there are McGuffins nested in McGuffins. So much of this is casually waved away as “future stuff… you’re not qualified” that it feels vaguely condescending to the audience. At one point Sator says to Kat “You don’t know what’s going on, do you?” and she shakes her head blankly. We’re right with you there luv! There are also gaps in the storyline that jar. The word “~Lelki ismeretek”? What does it mean. Is it just a password? I’m none the wiser. The manic pace of ~Lelki ismeretek and the constant din means that the movie gallops along like a series of disconnected (albeit brilliant) action set pieces. For me, it has none of the emotional heart of the Cobb’s marriage problems from “Inception” or the father/daughter separation of “Interstellar”. In fact, you barely care for anyone in the movie, perhaps with the exception of Kat. It’s a talented cast. As mentioned above, John David Washington is muscular and athletic in the role. It’s a big load for the actor to carry in such a tent-pole movie, given his only significant starring role before was in the excellent BlacKkKlansman. But he carries it off well. A worthy successor to Gerard Butler and Jason Statham for action roles in the next 10 years. This is also a great performance by Robert Pattinson, in his most high-profile film in a long time, playing the vaguely alcoholic and Carré-esque support guy. Pattinson’s Potter co-star Clemence Poésy also pops up — rather more un-glam that usual — as the scientist plot-expositor early in the movie. Nolan’s regular Michael Caine also pops up. although the 87-year old legend is starting to show his age: His speech was obviously affected at the time of filming (though nice try Mr Nolan in trying to disguise that with a mouth full of food!). But in my book, any amount of Caine in a movie is a plus. He also gets to deliver the best killer line in the film about snobbery! However, it’s Kenneth Branagh and Elizabeth Debicki that really stand out. They were both fabulous, especially when they were bouncing off each other in their marital battle royale. So, given this was my most anticipated movie of the year, it’s a bit of a curate’s egg for me. A mixture of being awe-struck at times and slightly disappointed at others. It’s a movie which needs a second watch, so I’m heading back today to give my ear drums another bashing! And this is one where I reserve the right to revisit my rating after that second watch… it’s not likely to go down… but it might go up. (For the full graphical review, check out One Mann’s Movies on t’interweb and Facebook. Thanks.) As this will be non-spoiler, I can’t say too much about the story. However, what I can is this: ~Lelki ismeretek’s story is quite dynamic in the sense that you won’t understand it till it wants you to. So, for the first half, your brain is fighting for hints and pieces to puzzle together the story. It isn’t until halfway through the movie that ~Lelki ismeretek invites you to the fantastic storytelling by Christopher Nolan. Acting is beyond phenomenal, and I’d be genuinely surprised if neither Robert Pattinson nor John David Washington doesn’t receive an Oscar nomination for best actor. It’s also hard not to mention how good Elizabeth Debicki and Aaron Johnson both are. All around, great acting, and the dialogue amps up the quality of the movie. The idea of this movie is damn fascinating, and while there are films that explore time-travelling, there’s never been anything quite like this. It has such a beautiful charm and for the most part, explains everything thoroughly. It feels so much more complex than any form of time-travelling we’ve seen, and no less could’ve been expected from Nolan. Oh my lord, the score for this film fits so perfectly. Every scene that’s meant to feel intense was amped by a hundred because of how good the score was. Let me just say though, none of them will be found iconic, but they fit the story and scenes so well. In the end, I walked out, feeling very satisfied. Nevertheless, I do have issues with the film that I cannot really express without spoiling bits of the story. There are definitely little inconsistencies that I found myself uncovering as the story progressed. However, I only had one issue that I found impacted my enjoyment. That issue was understanding some of the dialogue. No, not in the sense that the movie is too complicated, but more that it was hard to make out was being said at times. It felt like the movie required subtitles, but that probably was because, at a time in the film, there was far too much exposition. Nevertheless, I loved this film, I’ll be watching it at least two more times, and I think most of you in this group will enjoy it. I definitely suggest watching it in theatres if possible, just so you can get that excitement. (4/5) & (8.5/10) for those that care about number scores. At first, I want to ask Christopher Nolan one question, HOW THE HELL YOU DID THIS? Seriously I want to have an answer, How did he write such as this masterpiece! How did he get this complicated, fabulous and creative idea? What is going on in his mind? The story is written and directed perfectly, the narration style was absolutely unique. I have no idea how can anyone direct such as this story, that was a huge challenge, and as usual Nolan gave us a masterpiece that we’ll put beside (Memento), (Inception) and (Interstellar) The movie is so fast-paced in a good way, there was no boring moment. The chemistry between John David Washington and Robert Pattinson was great and funny and both of their performance was really good. Elizabeth Debicki performance was the best in the movie because she had the chance to show her acting abilities and she cached up that chance and showed us an A level acting. The music wasn’t unique and distinct as the music of Interstellar for example and I think this movie needed the touch of Hans Zimmer, I’m not saying that Ludwig Göransson failed but Hans Zimmer in another level. If there was something I’d say that I didn’t like it in the movie would it be that Nolan discarded any set up or characters backgrounds except Elizabeth Debicki dramatic story but it wasn’t that bad for me, I didn’t care about that, the exciting story didn’t give me the chance to focus on it. But the actual problem was the third act, it was really complicated and I got lost and I convinced myself to discard the questions that were in my head and enjoy the well-made action sequences and Elizabeth Debicki performance. I think this kind of movie that gets better with a second and third watch. I honestly don’t quite know where to begin with ~Lelki ismeretek. I love Christopher Nolan’s work but I have never seen a more complicated film (and I understood Memento). ~After nearly three hours, I came away from ~Lelki ismeretek not knowing myself, my mind reduced to nothing more than piles of ash. Was there time travel involved? Hmm, there was definitely something about time inversion. I mean, does Nolan even understand what he wrote? Look, I give credit to the director because he’s one of the few directors left who knows how to create a compelling and intelligent blockbuster. ~Lelki ismeretek is full of Nolan trademarks — the gratuitous Michael Caine cameo, a loud, really loud score, complete with stunning cinematography and slickly inventive action set-pieces. This time around however, Nolan has finally managed to ‘out-Nolan’ himself: the palindromic plot, whilst creatively ambitious, is simply far too complicated for its own good. ~Lelki ismeretek is overlong, overstuffed, pretentious and too exhausting to comprehend in its entirety — it makes Inception and Interstellar look like Peppa Pig by comparison. I’m aware of the technical wizardry and creative mastery in this film and lord knows I’ll have to watch this again. For those who want a puzzle, ~Lelki ismeretek at least provides a unique cinematic experience. But to actually enjoy solving it Nolan wants you to work very very hard.

Home: Jacob Seed/OC Chapter 34
Warnings: Sex, Violence
(1 Week Later: Mara is sitting on a boulder by the large pond outside the St Francis Veterans center. She is swigging a bottle of whiskey. She feels a lot better today save for the mild cramping she has in her abdomen. She hasn’t been to see a doctor. She doesn’t want to. She’s afraid of what they’ll say. She wipes away the tears that have been rolling down her cheeks and looks up at the large building. She sighs. Joseph held his usual Sunday sermon this morning and she sat at the back again. Her sister knows something’s wrong. She told her this morning that she’s worried about her and she asked if Holly was still being horrible to her. Mara told her everything was fine. But as usual in her life nothing ever is. She’s glad to be away from that damn compound for a while though. She hates it there. Nobody really talks to her only Evelyn and her sister when she pops by for a visit. She did the obstacle course again this afternoon several times. It’s gruelling and she is always exhausted afterwards. Today though was especially embarrassing. After the second run she threw up all over the floor. Nobody seemed to care or notice though. Nobody said anything. She probably shouldn’t be drinking whiskey. She’ll probably throw it back up in a minute but she doesn’t care. She takes another swig and rubs at her collarbone. She is wearing her black leggings and the knitted jumper of Edens Gate with the logo on it. The jumper is slightly too big for her and hangs off her shoulder slightly. She watches the pond and sees a fish break the surface disturbing the still water. She then looks at the floor and starts tearing up grass. A few minutes later she hears muffled footsteps then a voice that makes her jump and her heart starts to race.).
Jacob: Any particular reason you’re hanging around outside my place? (She looks up at him and stares at him. She feels a flutter in her abdomen and a tightness in her chest.). Mara: Oh this is your place? Strange it looks abandoned to me. Jacob: Funny. I’m not in the mood. Mara: You always seem to be in a mood Jake. (His eyes narrow.). Mara: Is there any particular reason you don’t want me sitting here? Jacob: No. Mara: Then what’s the problem? Jacob: Why aren’t you at the compound? Mara: The compound...Hmmm. The place where nobody likes me. The place where I sit on my own all day. That’s when I’m not punching things and running stupid obstacle courses. Listening to Joe prat on about the collapse and sin and preparedness. So I thought well if I’m gonna sit on my tod again I might as well do it somewhere that has some nice scenery. I have always loved it up here. Ever since I was a kid. Jacob: Hm. Lots of mountains and scenery. Why this particular spot hm? Hoping to see me? (He smirks which really pisses her off but she tries not to show it. Fucking men.). Mara: Maybe. (She takes another swig of whiskey then holds the bottle out to him.). Mara: Drink? Jacob: What would Joseph say if he knew his little pure princess was downing whiskey like an old drunk. (She glares at him and he chuckles.). Mara: Couldn’t give a fuck. I’ll go and offer him one an all. Jacob: A drink or a fuck? (She glares at him again.). Mara: You what? Why do you act like such a prick? (His eyes narrow.). Jacob: Don’t talk to me like that. Mara: Or what? Hm? What you gonna do? (She stands up.). Mara: Well come on Mr big man. (He chuckles and shakes his head. She sighs and walks off.). Jacob: Where are you going? Mara: Away. (He grabs her arm and looks down at her. She looks tired and pale and sad.). Mara: What? Jacob: Why did you come here? Mara: I thought I already answered that question. Jacob: Hm. Mara: You wanna fuck again? (He stares at her.). Jacob: I think you’ve had too much to drink. Mara: Nope. I haven’t had enough. Sure you don’t want some? It’s good. Jacob: Where’d you get it? Mara: Nicked it. Jacob: Hm. (She takes another swig and goes to walk off. Just then a green truck races around the bend with a squeal of tyres nearly knocking Mara over.). Mara: Oi! Watch where you’re fucking going cunt! (Jacob almost laughs at Mara’s temper but he knows who the truck belongs to. Whitetail Militia. This lot are especially brazen driving up to his front door like this. A man suddenly gets out as Jacob draws his pistol stepping backwards preparing to use the boulder as cover if necessary. The man grabs Mara as she’s walking away and points a pistol at her head.). Man: Come with us quietly and we won’t shoot your friend. (There is silence for a moment. Then Mara starts laughing.). Man2: What’s so funny? Mara: You stupid assholes! You think Jakey here gives a fuck about me? He don’t give a fuck about anyone! He’d probably kill his own brothers if he had to! Using me as a bargaining chip! (Mara laughs again.). Mara: A dumb move indeed! (She suddenly stops laughing and brings the whiskey bottle up swinging it up into the man’s face so hard it smashes. He lets go off her and cries out stumbling back with his hands over his face. Mara then turns and jams what’s left of the bottle in his neck severing his carotid artery. Blood spurts everywhere as the man clutches neck gurgling as he slides down the truck. Jacob has aimed his pistol and shot the woman and the other man before they could do anything. The man on the back of the truck however has gotten on the mounted gun. He swings it to aim at Jacob making him duck down behind the boulder as bullets fly everywhere. Suddenly the gunfire ceases and Jacob slowly straightens up. He sees Mara yank the man off the back of the truck and he falls to his back on the ground. She then starts punching him. The man hits her back and grabs her shoving her to the ground. Jacob raises his pistol and shoots the man in the side of the head. He reaches Mara as she pulls herself to her feet. Her nose is bleeding.). Mara: Always drama with you. Every fucking time. Jacob: Can’t help that. Your nose is bleeding. Mara: No shit. Fucking pricks. Lost me whiskey now. (He chuckles and shakes his head.). Mara: Glad I’ve amused you. You know when I said you need to smile more I didn’t mean laugh at me. Jerk. (He chuckles.). Jacob: Come on. (She raises her eyebrows.). Mara: You got whiskey? (He chuckles again before walking off back to the Veterans Center. She follows him. As they enter the grounds Terry and Barry walk over.). Terry: Hey what happened? Mara: Pricks. Jacob: Whitetails. Didn’t you hear the gunfire? Terry: We were inside sir. Barry: Always gunfire around here. Jacob: Didn’t hear gunfire. You think of yourselves as soldiers? Terry: Sorry sir. (Jacob tuts and walks past them going inside. Mara follows him up to his office. She sits down and he grabs a first aid kit before dragging a chair over to her and sitting down opposite her. He dabs at her nose and wipes the blood away.). Mara: You gonna take care of me now handsome? (He stops what he is doing and stares at her. She presses a soft kiss to his lips but he moves away. She looks at the floor. He wipes the rest of the blood away and presses his fingers to her nose.). Jacob: It’s not broken. Mara: That’s alright then. (He holds the bandage on her nose for a few minutes and the bleeding finally stops.). Mara: Still pretty? (He blinks at her. She sighs.). Mara: Guess not. (She looks at her feet.). Mara: So...Whiskey? Jacob: Um. (He opens a drawer and pulls out a bottle of whiskey and two shot glasses.). Mara: Shots? (She lets out a giggle.). Mara: You want me drunk? (He doesn’t answer. He just pours two shots of whiskey then downs both of them. She giggles.). Mara: Hey share then. (He pours some more whiskey and she picks up a shot glass and downs it.). Mara: So what you been up to? Anything exciting? Bedded any more attractive women? (He scoffs and shakes his head.). Jacob: What is it with you? (He sits down opposite her. He appears to be studying her.). Mara: What do you mean? Jacob: Why would a young attractive woman like you want to hang out here with me? (She is silent for a moment.). Mara: Why would you assume that a young woman wouldn’t want to spend time with you? (He stares at her.). Jacob: So...You want to spend time with me? Ah yes because you have a crush on me. (He chuckles and shakes his head. She sighs.). Mara: You shouldn’t make fun you know? Why is it so insane to you that a woman would be attracted to you? (He stares at her. She stares at him.). Jacob: I’m not a good man. Mara: I figured that much out for myself. Jacob: I’m also old enough to be your father. Mara: No you’re not. Jacob: I am. Mara: Well you don’t look it. Jacob: Now you’re just taking the piss. Mara: I’m not. If you don’t want to believe me fine. (She takes a big gulp of whiskey from the bottle before putting it down and standing up.). Jacob: Where are you going? Mara: I’m going. Look I ain’t that stupid. You ain’t interested. I get it. (She goes to open the door but suddenly he is there pressing against her from behind. She lets out a small gasp as he leans down brushing her hair away from her ear and whispering to her.). Jacob: You need to understand something first. Mara: What? Jacob: This is just sex. It’s never gonna be anything else. Mara: I never expected anything else. Jacob: Well good. Coz having a crush on me and having some idea of us getting together is only gonna hurt you. Coz it’ll never happen. You’re right. I ain’t interested. I just wanna fuck. (He grabs her hair and yanks her backwards.
---Joseph is heading back to his church when he decides to see how Mara is doing. He walks over to the barn where she sleeps and sees her bed is empty. He looks over at the two men snoring softly in their bunk then at the woman sleeping on the bottom bunk. He frowns and walks back towards the main gates with the large white archway. He looks up at the lookout tower where Mara can often be seen. Steve is sitting up there drinking tea from a flask. Joseph frowns before heading back towards his church. He sees Evelyn carrying some washing in a basket.). Joseph: Evelyn? Evelyn: Yes dear? Joseph: Have you seen Mara? Evelyn: Hm. Not since this afternoon. She said she was going for a walk. Said she had to get away from here for a few hours. I think she feels...Like she doesn’t belong. She’s been finding it hard to make friends. Holly hasn’t been helping silly girl. Joseph: I see. Evelyn: Oh I wouldn’t worry. She’s a young girl. They do this all the time dear. She’ll be back. You should get some rest you do way too much. (She gently pats his arm before smiling and bustling away. Joseph walks back to his church. Evelyn is the eldest member of Edens Gate at 69 years old. She’s also the only one that calls him dear. He enters his church closing the door behind him and walks past the pews to the front of the church. He sits down at his small desk and opens his leather notebook before picking up his fountain pen. He starts to write. After a few minutes he puts his pen down and frowns. He wonders where Mara has gone. It is rather late now. He prays nothing bad has happened to her.
---Jacob is lying on his side in his bed. He is naked. Mara is lying on her side in front of him also naked. His cock is buried in her tight little cunt and he has one hand around her throat, the other is wrapped around her thigh holding her leg up slightly. She is moaning as he jerks his hips pumping in and out of her frantically chasing his release. He then starts tapping and slapping at her clitoris making her flinch and let out a whimper. He then slaps her clit harder making her shudder and cry out.). Mara: Oh! Oh. Oooh! (His other hand squeezes her throat as he continues to fuck her roughly while rubbing and tapping her clitoris. She shudders again and cries out loudly. Jacob wonders if his men can hear what they’re doing, he doesn’t really care. None of them would dare say a word. She whimpers again.). Mara: Stop. Stop. (He grips her throat tighter and whispers in her ear.). Jacob: Who do you think is in charge here kitten? (She giggles.). Mara: Let me guess...You. Jacob: That’s right. You don’t give me orders. (A few minutes later he climaxes with a groan sinking his teeth into her shoulder making her wince. He then moves away from her lying on his back panting hard. She lies there trembling. Fuck. The hell is wrong with her? Why does she like this guy? She rolls over and snuggles against him lying her head on his chest and throwing a leg over him.). Jacob: The fuck are you doing? Mara: Going to sleep. Jacob: No. (He pushes her away from him almost pushing her off of the small bed.). Jacob: Get dressed and get out. (She frowns. Now she is confused. He seemed to enjoy it. He wanted her. Now he is just kicking her out? Just sex he said. She can’t be surprised. She slowly gets up and gets dressed. She then goes over to the bed.). Jacob: What are you doing? Mara: I... (He looks up at her. She bends down and kisses his cheek brushing her fingers through his hair. He pushes her away. She then turns and goes to the door opening it. She turns back trying her damndest not to cry in front of him.). Mara: Night Jake. (He grunts in response. She leaves closing the door behind her. Nobody really pays any attention to her as she leaves the Veterans Center and walks down the road. She starts to sob. She doesn’t understand how he can be like that. So cold and...Emotionless. She supposes she can’t be mad at him or upset about it. She really has no right to be. He made it perfectly clear that it is just sex. That sex is all he’s interested in. At least he’s made it clear she supposes. A lot of men don’t. A lot of men lie to women and lead them on. She supposes that’s one thing about Jacob. He’s honest. But she wonders why his whole attitude has suddenly changed. The first time they made love he was drunk yes but...He held her. The following day he just left but he wasn’t as cold as he was just now. After she sucked him off he was sort of dismissive but he wasn’t mean. She wonders what’s changed. She told him she had a crush on him. Maybe he just doesn’t want her to get the wrong idea or lead her on. He’s just being honest. She sighs as she continues to walk not really knowing where she’s going. She can’t go back to the compound. She doesn’t want to either. It’s late...Her sister is probably asleep. She doesn’t really want to see her sister right now either. Her sister always knows something is wrong. She wouldn’t stop asking questions. She doesn’t know how to answer any of them. Then she wonders if John is still awake. He sometimes stays up rather late. She wonders if he would ask her loads of questions. She wonders if he would judge her. He doesn’t seem to be the type that judges people. Not really. He seems to like helping people become free of their pasts and their sins. He seems to like to listen to people and their stories. Besides he can’t really judge anyone. Not with all he has done. Drugs, booze, women, violence. No he can’t judge anyone. He has no right to. Even when she was telling him all about all the people she killed he didn’t seem shocked or angry. He didn’t seem to hate her for it. He said that he was going to free her from it. Free her from Wrath. She doesn’t feel free though. She feels no different. Those people are all still dead. She sees a man at the side of the road. Another man is sitting on an ATV. The man gets off of the ATV leaving the engine running. He goes over and embraces the other man and they start talking. Mara quickly walks over to the ATV and gets on it before speeding off.). Man: Hey! (She doesn’t look back. She just races away from the mountains at a break neck speed. Tears stinging her eyes.).

Okay so this is most definitely very silly but i need to get this off my chest bc i’ve been thinking about this for like, 3 weeks now, so just bear with me here, alright??
So the song Let’s Hear It for the Boy TOTALLY sounds like Steve and Nancy singing about their respective boyfriends, Billy and Jonathan. every time i hear it i think of them. Like it’s basically a girl talking about how her boyfriend isn’t a lot of things but he definitely loves her and they “always have a real good time”
And like, in case you don’t believe me here, can we just go through some of the lyrics for a sec???
My baby, he don't talk sweet
He ain't got much to say
K, great, Jonathan (and honestly even Billy, even though we know the boy likes to run his mouth as well, I think he would often go for being the strong and stoic type. esp w/ the kids so he can intimidate them and hopefully get them to back off)
And maybe he don't dress fine
But I don't really mind
Okay we all love Billy’s open shirts and double denim i’m SURE, and Jonathan’s lil emo-punk aesthetic is my actual favorite thing, but c’mon. in comparison to Steve’s stuff (probably from Lacoste or whatever + Nikes) and Nancy’s nice lil sweaters and skirts and whatevers, the other 2 boys do Not dress “Fine”. they dress like 2 angsty teen boys who don’t come from money but Guess What?? Nancy and Steve don’t mind!! they think their lil punk, grunge boys are the CUTEST, most comfy looking boys and it’s honestly so Hot to them so like?? Yeah, keep leaving your shirt unbuttoned, Billy
My baby may not be rich
He's watching every dime
But he loves me, loves me, loves me
We always have a real good time
HELLO. BOTH OF THEM. both Jonathan and Billy do NOT come from money whereas Steve and Nancy’s families are CLEARLY more well off. that’s just an oft talked about given here. and i can totally see both boys obviously wanting to spoil their boyfriend/girlfriend in their hearts but like, realisitcally???? obviously they can’t really do that. Nancy knows at this point to cherish each and every cent Jonathan spends on her bc she knows he could (and maybe should??) spend his money helping out his mom and getting stuff for Will. but when he buys her her favorite box of candy at the movies every now and then, her heart lights up. and Billy is always making sure Steve is the one paying for their dates, for the drive in and for the sodas and for the games at the carnival, but when he gets Steve that Tears for Fears album he’s been gushing over for his birthday, he kisses the daylights out of his boyfriend.
also i LOVE the lines after that too bc that’s so totally both of these couples. they’re all just horny lil teenagers who sneak around to have sex. I mean, cheap thrills, amiright? and i def think both couples would be so into that stuff (esp in a tiny town like Hawkins), like running through the woods or going out to the quarry to watch the sunset and listen to the radio or whatever
And maybe he sings off-key
But that's all right by me, yeah
Billy and Jonathan love music, yes. But imagine Billy and Jonathan singing?? and singing noticeably off key, even though their hearts are totally in it. now imagine Steve (played by actual musician Joe Keery) and Nancy having naturally lovely singing voices and it kind of bothers the hell out of Jonathan and Billy bc, as Billy would put it, their voices are “wasted on bubblegum pop trash”. Steve will just laugh in his face as he sings Footloose for the 3rd time in a row
and don’t forget all the lovey-dovey/sexual undertones of this song either!
But he loves me, loves me, loves me
I know that he loves me anyway
'Cause every time he pulls me near
I just wanna cheer
Maybe he's no Romeo
But he's my loving one-man show
But he loves me, loves me, loves me
We always have a real good time
‘Cause what he does, he does so well
Makes me wanna yell
Like??? My babes are horny teens who are so in love w/ each other it’s CRAZY and these lyrics are Actually Perfect for them. they love being close and they love all that physical affection nonsense.
and I just…. REALLY like to imagine all 4 of them hanging out together (just imagine that Steve has become super good friends w/ Nancy and Jonathan and has forced Billy to become friends w/ them too bc that shit is important to Soft Boi Steve) and Nancy + Steve fought for control of the radio and are listening to the Top Hits station while Billy and Jonathan kinda sulk on a bench bc yeah… no. they are NOT into pop but they’ll sit here and listen (bc it’s hot and not the time for fights)(doesn’t keep them from grumbling a bit)
And so Let’s Hear It for the Boy comes on and Nancy and Steve look at each other with evil little grins before they start singing/mouthing along to the lyrics and twirling each other around, hand in hand, in dance all the while pointing at their boyfriends who are just kinda sat there in awe + horror of their dorky partners. And on particular lines they’ll sweep the boys up and spin them around and make them all flustered (Jonathan blushing like crazy, Billy smacking Steve’s shoulder in protest) and on that whole “we always have a real good time” thing, Steve is dancin around w/ Billy and Billy takes the opportunity to grab Steve’s ass and pull him close and grind up on him a bit as he sways his hips into him and i just???? these 4 little dorks dancing around to such an upbeat and happy song??? Maybe in a little abandoned park as the sun is setting and the weather is still hot and Billy is wearing a slightly damp tank top and Jonathan’s hair is kinda sticking to his forehead w/ sweat and Nancy’s face is red from being in the sun and Steve’s hair is falling a bit but they’re all laughing and smiling and spinning each other around and hopping a little bit to the beat and Jonathan has his arms wrapped around Nancy gently as they sway and Billy won’t stop grabbing for Steve’s ass and it’s just NICE and SOFT and AUGH
kay that’s all. ♥ i’m done, buh bye.

November 7 - Save the Last Dance
Inspired by the song “Save the Last Dance” by Capital Kings. That song is decidedly not the right feel for the fic, though, so I used lyrics from “Body and Soul” by Tony Bennett.
Word count: 2585
Warnings: Slight accidental Stucky angst. (So sorry, I surprised myself.)
Pairing: 40s!Bucky Barnes X Reader
Tumblr media
Bucky slouched into the booth across from his friend, using his hand to block the morning light coming through the window. Why he’d agreed to come to breakfast with this bad a hangover was beyond him.
Okay, so he’d do pretty much anything Stevie asked. Maybe the answer wasn’t that far beyond him. Speaking of the smaller man, he was studying Bucky with his classic look of disapproval.
“You look like hell,” Steve finally commented. Bucky flashed him a grin as best he could.
“Feel like it, too. Probably a good thing you didn’t come. You’d have hated it.”
“Yeah,” Steve agreed with him, “I’m not exactly the club type. You weren’t quite as enthusiastic about them either until a week ago, particularly with that much drinking. What changed?”
Bucky felt a flush slowly creep up his neck, a thing which didn’t go unnoticed by his friend.
“Nuthin’,” he mumbled before turning his attention to behind the diner’s counter. “Janie, can I get a cup of joe over here, please?”
“Already got it comin’, sweetheart,” the middle-aged waitress replied, bringing a steaming cup of coffee over and placing it in front of him. “Can I get either of you anything to eat?”
“Just our usuals,” Steve requested. “Thank you, Janie.”
“Anything for my two favorite boys!” she called back cheerily as she returned to the kitchen to place their orders.
Steve sat a little straighter so he could lean forward with his elbows on the table. “All right, Buck, talk. There’s a reason you’ve got out dancing every night this past week, and it’s one that makes you both get soused while you’re out and blush when asked about it. What’s her name?”
Bucky buried his face in the coffee mug as he felt the blush spread. “Y/N.” He briefly wished he could wipe Steve’s smirk off his face.
“And I’m guessing Y/N likes dancing?”
“She seems to,” Bucky shrugged, trying to act casual. “She’s there every evening, anyway.”
“Buck,” Steve realized, eyes going wide, “have you actually told this woman how you feel, or are you just stalking her?”
“I’m not stalking her!” Bucky protested. “I’m just, you know, working my way up to it.”
Steve leaned back and crossed his arms, a smirk playing across his face. “Well, what do you know. There exists in New York a dame the great Bucky Barnes is scared to like.”
“You wouldn’t understand,” Bucky muttered. “You haven’t seen her. She’s perfect.”
“So take me tonight,” Steve said with a shrug. “Point out this doll you’re so enthralled with.”
“You sure? You’ve never been much for the jazz club scene.”
“Sure I’m sure. This has gotta be a once-in-a-lifetime type woman to get you flustered.”
“Whatever, punk.” Bucky reached across the table and gave his friend a light shove. “I’ll pick you up at seven?”
Before Steve could reply, Janie came over and set a plate in front of each of them. “There you go, boys. Enjoy!”
“Thanks, Janie!” they chorused together before digging in. Food was always a surefire way to shut both of them up.
----------
The band was warming up for the night as the two men made their way into the jazz club. Bucky immediately staked out a position at the bar, ordering a beer for himself and a soda for Steve. The smaller man hoisted himself onto one of the tall barstools and studied his friend, who was chugging the beer like his life depended on it.
“You know,” Steve mused, “you’ll probably have a better chance with this dame if you’re not drunk off your ass.”
“Shut up, punk,” Bucky muttered. “If I’m too sober I won’t be able to talk to her.”
“Yeah, ‘cause alcohol has been so helpful up to this point,” Steve helpfully pointed out. “So, where is she?”
Bucky’s eyes roamed the room before his entire body froze. “She’s right there,” he said breathlessly.
Steve turned to follow his friend’s gaze and there you were. Your dress fit you perfectly and the color highlighted your eyes, making you stand out even from across the room. Men were already perking up, watching you as you entered on the arms of your friends, the five of you talking and laughing about how fun the night would be.
“Okay,” Steve admitted, “she is beautiful.”
"Beautiful?” Bucky looked at him like he’d grown an extra two feet. “Beautiful? Stevie, she’s a living work of art. Her smile could light all of Brooklyn. Her laugh is prettier than angels singing. When she dances even God Himself stops to watch.”
“All right, all right,” Steve said, holding up his hands before his friend could continue. “Obviously you care a lot about her. How many times have you two danced?”
Bucky blushed and ducked his head at the question. “I, um, haven’t exactly, well, talked to her yet,” he admitted.
“You haven’t even talked to her? At all?”
“Jeez, Stevie, keep it down,” Bucky whispered harshly, pawing frantically at the younger man’s arm. “The music isn’t playing yet. She’ll hear you.”
“Buck,” Steve asked him, eyes wide, “have you been coming here for the last week to just sit at the bar and stare at her? I’ve never seen you like this before.”
The brunet pouted and fiddled with his bottle. “That’s because I’ve never seen a doll like her before. She’s perfect, Stevie. She could have any guy in here. Why would she want me?”
“Because you’re worth wanting, Buck,” the blond says softly. “You care for people and you fight for what’s right and you’re loyal to a fault. If anyone would know, I would. Go talk to her. If you’re really that nervous, don’t put on your game, just be yourself. Any dame would fall for that.”
Bucky watched your group settle into a table and quickly downed the last of his beer. There was already another man making his way towards you and he knew there wouldn’t be a moment he could get you alone all evening. At the same time, as much as he wasn’t sure he could talk to you, he also didn’t know if he could go another night sitting back and watching as every other man in the room asked you to dance. Shoving himself off the bar, he gave Steve his best “I’m gonna go for it” look and started making his way towards you.
The closer he got, the more his nerves bubbled up. From a distance your beauty was brilliant, but the closer he got, the more it left brilliant behind in favor of blinding. Your smile left him weak in the knees. He couldn’t do this; the man talking to you was staking his claim on the first dance and you were agreeing with a shy blush that highlighted just how soft your cheeks were.
Just as he was about to divert and give up, however, you looked up right into his eyes and smiled. You smiled right at him and his knees nearly gave out, but he couldn’t back down. Swallowing his nerves as best he could, Bucky put on his best smile and walked up to you.
----------
Charlotte was getting married in two weeks, and she was determined to drag all of her friends out to have fun every night she could before it happened. It had been a week already, and she still had plans to go dancing every night the next week as well.
Dancing had always been something you enjoyed, but this was definitely more than you were used to. You teased her that by the time she walked down the aisle you would have better calves than ever, and she just laughed.
“Maybe you’ll find a date for my wedding. Now wouldn’t that be a miracle!” she teased.
It wasn’t that you weren’t interested in dating; it was more that all the men who seemed interested in dating you were, well, rather shallow. They would complement you as you spun around the floor but at the end of the dance they didn’t have anything about them that held your attention.
The first night Charlotte had dragged you out with your friends you had caught sight of a brunet at the bar. You’d noticed him watching you through the night, but he never approached. You told yourself that if he couldn’t talk to you, you didn’t need to waste any time thinking about him, but think about him you did, far more than you would willingly admit to anyone. He’d been back every night since, always there at the same spot at the bar when your group arrived, and always at that same spot when the music ended for the night and you all went home.
Tonight, though…
Everett had come up to ask you for the first dance as he always did, and as you always did, you said yes. He was a good dancer, one of the better partners you’d had, and he’d made it clear that all he was looking for was a dance partner for the night so you didn’t feel like you were leading him on by dancing with him so often. He always took a turn with each of your friends as well, but he always asked you for the first dance.
As he went back to his table, your eyes automatically moved to search for the brunet and to your surprise he wasn’t at the bar. No, he was heading right for you. Your eyes locked with his and after a brief moment he smiled, a smile that had your stomach doing little flip flops.
“Hello, ma’am, I couldn’t help but notice your beautiful smile from across the room,” he said, taking your hand and pressing a kiss to the back. “Bucky Barnes. And you are…?”
“Y/N Y/L/N,” you replied. You were proud to hear you’d managed to keep the breathlessness from your voice.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Miss Y/N Y/L/N,” he smoothly replied, the edges of his mouth still turned up in a manner that honestly was making it a little hard to think. “I was wondering if you’d do me the honor of saving me your last dance tonight?”
All you could manage was a nod, but it seemed to work. His smile grew a fraction and he kissed your hand one last time before disappearing as the music started and Everett came up to claim you for the first dance.
----------
“Really?” Steve asked, eyebrow cocked at his friend. “You go over there for maybe twenty seconds and you’re back already?”
“I asked her for the last dance,” Bucky argued. “It’s not like I didn’t talk to her.”
“Buck, the last dance is over two hours from now!” Steve threw his hands up in exasperation.
“Well she already had a partner for the first.”
“So naturally,” Steve said rather dryly, “you asked her for the last instead of the second.”
Bucky sat back on his stool and put his head in his hands. “I wanted to be memorable. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Now I know I’m just going to freak out until then.
“Just don’t get drunk.” Steve patted him on the shoulder. “That would be the wrong kind of memorable.” He grabbed his coat off the bar. “I’m going to head home; this really isn’t my scene. I can’t dance and I sure can’t drink the whole time or I’ll be dead.”
“I’ll walk you,” Bucky said, gathering his own coat.
Steve protested, “You don’t need to, I’ll be fine. It’s just a few blocks.”
“Punk,” Bucky teased, throwing his arm around his friend, “I am not leaving you alone. Who knows how many fights you could get into in a few blocks. Besides,” he maneuvered his friend towards the door, “you said it yourself. I have more than two hours until I need to be here for the dance.”
----------
Between dances you kept glancing towards the bar, hoping for a glance of the brunet – of Bucky. For the longest time, he wasn’t anywhere to be found. He wasn’t by the bar, he wasn’t at one of the tables, and you definitely didn’t see him on the dance floor. As it drew closer to the end of the night, you kept turning down requests for the last dance, saying it had already been claimed. You hoped he would be here; it would be a lie if you said you weren’t very curious about Bucky’s dancing skills. You’d never seen him dance once in the week you’d been coming.
But then the singer announced their last song and Bucky was suddenly at your side, leading you onto the floor. The music started and the lyrics felt perfect.
My heart is sad and lonely
For you I sigh, for you dear only
Why haven't you seen it
I'm all for you body and soul
I spend my days in longin'
And wondering why it's me you're ogling
Bucky, well, the man could dance. He swept you across the floor, lighter on his feet than any partner you had yet danced with that week.
“Well, that doesn’t answer that question,” you teased. “You haven’t been sitting at that bar all week because you can’t dance.”
“No,” he agreed, biting his lower lip and smiling, “it’s just taken me this long to get up the courage to ask. I saw you that first day I came in, and your smile is breathtaking. My pal had to give me a pep talk just to get me talk to you.”
You looked in his eyes and saw a nervousness there that nearly made you stumble.
“Why? Handsome man like you can probably have any lady he wants. Why me?”
He took a deep breath before replying, but didn’t take his eyes from yours.
“When you walk in the room, it lights up. Your smile could melt the coldest heart. When you dance the whole world has to stop and watch because you are stunning, and I’ve never seen anyone like you before.”
Well. Not quite the answer you were expecting, not that you’d had an expectation. You could feel the blush creeping across your cheeks, and his smile grew wider.
“And,” he whispered in your ear, “when you blush like that it’s prettier than the stars in the sky.”
“Now I know you’re lying,” you laughed, lightly slapping his shoulder.
“Never, doll,” and the earnestness in his eyes made it hard to breathe. “Never to you.”
----------
I tell you I mean it
I'm all for you body and soul
I can't believe it
It's hard to conceive it
That you turn away romance
Are you pretending
It looks like the ending
And less I could have one more chance to prove, dear
My life a wreck you're making
You know I'm yours for just the taking
I'd gladly surrender myself to you body and soul
--------------------
The two of you danced through the rest of the song, and when it was over, you quickly scribbled on and slipped him a small card as your friends dragged you off.
Bucky glanced down to read it. “Call me up some time,” it said, followed by a phone number. He grinned as he slipped the note in his pocket. The walk home hardly registered; he couldn’t feel the pavement beneath his feet and would swear he was floating.
The most beautiful dame in Brooklyn, and he had your number.
Thank you, Stevie.

How Republican Senators Account for the Trump Presidency - The New Yorker
Tumblr media
If you’re interested in how Republican politicians are talking about Donald Trump in the end phase of his first term and perhaps his Presidency, one good place to look is to the campaigns of the ten Republican senators who are least likely to be reëlected—most of whom represent states that the President won comfortably four years ago. Judging from current polling in those politicians’ races, the Democrats may well gain control of the Senate: they need to pick up only two or three of the vulnerable Republican seats, in Arizona, Colorado, Maine, North Carolina, South Carolina, Iowa, Montana, Alaska, and Georgia (where two Republican seats are being tightly contested). In the past week, I watched eight of those senators’ debates, which had a throwback tinge to them: the television graphics were boxy and dated, the questions excellent, and the candidates nimbler than you might expect. Politicians are charming people who have been operating under a spell of charmlessness for a decade, roughly since Mitch McConnell made it obvious that he was on a mission to thwart the Obama Administration and a mood of wartime enmity suffused the capital. But the more consequential anachronism of those Senate debates came from the Republican senators themselves, who generally acted as if Donald Trump were not the President and his policies were not the bedrocks of their party—as if, once he leaves office, the dials could be turned back to their 2011 settings and the decade could begin again.
The 2020 drumbeat, for Republicans, has been to warn of an ascendent socialism. “You put Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and Joe Biden in charge of Washington, you’ll see a federal takeover of the health-care system,” Steve Daines, of Montana, said, in a recent debate against his Democratic opponent, Governor Steve Bullock. But you don’t hear much about immigration, or trade, or any of the other issues that have defined Trump’s Presidency. The longer I watched the Senate debates, the more I found myself rewinding the footage to scan through the Republican candidates’ responses. Surely they’d mentioned the President, and somehow I’d missed it? But often they just hadn’t. In late September, Joni Ernst, the Republican senator from Iowa, made it through an hour-long debate with her Democratic challenger, a real-estate executive named Theresa Greenfield, without mentioning Trump by name. When asked directly about the Times revelations that the President, while living a billionaire’s life, had paid just seven hundred and fifty dollars to the federal government in annual income taxes, Ernst redirected. “Many years ago, I echoed the call for the President to release his tax returns,” she said. “But, bottom line, we would love to see lower taxes for everybody, including all of our hardworking Americans.”
I was watching on YouTube, and in the comments alongside the debate I could see the essentially erratic character of 2020 politics unfolding: viewers were talking about Hunter Biden or “Putin’s puppet” (Hillary Clinton’s most lasting epithet for the President), or exclaiming “TRUMP TRAIN!” On Twitter the Ernst-Greenfield debate didn’t register, which has fit the pattern; the Senate debates have been noticed only when someone declared them a rout. But what I saw in the sedate PBS studio where the Ernst-Greenfield debate was held, with Iowa’s veteran political columnist David Yepsen at the helm, was two capable candidates calmly advancing the basic positions of their parties: taxes should be higher, or lower; billionaires should get a smaller share of the spoils, or about the same amount; the Supreme Court was bound to dissolve Roe v. Wade, or it wasn’t. No one owned anyone. Beneath the madness of Presidential politics, the parties were moving at their usual rate, that of tectonic plates, and the only reasonable posture was to sit at your listening station like a geologist, headphones securely over your ears, waiting for the infinitesimal movement of a needle.
Now and then, there was some movement. I’d been particularly interested to watch John Cornyn, the three-term senator from Texas. A sixty-eight-year-old former judge with a long face and a formal manner, Cornyn is Mitch McConnell’s No. 2 and arguably the closest thing the Republican Party has to a tectonic plate. He had seemed to luck out when Beto O’Rourke declined to challenge him, leaving him with a little-known opponent, a former military-helicopter pilot named M. J. Hegar. But Hegar turned out to be effective. When, in an October 9th debate, Cornyn accused Hegar of “tacitly” endorsing police defunding, she spat out, “I never do anything tacitly—I’m not a tacit person,” and then kept muttering about it under her breath. She’s charming! Cornyn can be charming, too, in a courtly way, but he couldn’t quite get around to it because of all the time he had to spend furrowing his brow and reassuring Texans that things were not quite as bad as they appeared.
Midway through the debate, Cornyn got a simple, telling question from the moderator, the excellent Gromer Jeffers, of the Dallas Morning News: Could he name a single way in which he had positively affected the lives of ordinary Texans, in his eighteen years in the Senate? Cornyn nodded his long face, and told a story about the aftermath of a mass shooting, in Sutherland Springs, Texas, in 2017, when an Air Force veteran, who should have been prohibited from owning firearms because of a domestic-violence-related bad-conduct discharge, entered a church and killed twenty-six people. Cornyn said, “It occurred because someone who should never have been able to get their hands on a firearm, a convicted felon, was able to bypass the background-check system because the Air Force had not uploaded those names.” Cornyn recounted that, four days after the shooting, he introduced a bill that passed with bipartisan majorities, which closed a loophole in gun background checks. Cornyn said that “the Attorney General has now made the point in just six months; six million more people’s names are on the background-check system” to keep arms out of the hands of “dangerous criminals.” A bell rang, signalling that Cornyn’s time had expired; it had the feeling of a record scratch. Wait, what? One of the half-dozen most powerful Republicans in the country, a staunch ally of the National Rifle Association, was being asked to describe how he had improved the lives of ordinary people in the most powerful conservative state in the country, and his best case was that he had strengthened background checks? What had he been doing all this time? Maybe that was the trouble. The Senate’s agenda, focussed on mollifying Trump and confirming judges and cutting taxes for the highest earners, didn’t offer much to, as Jeffers had put it, “ordinary Texans.”
For five years, Republicans have been wearily answering (or, more often, dodging) the question of whether they support President Trump. But in this election they are being asked a deeper question, too, about what they have actually delivered during this decade of steady conservative ascendance. Across the debates, I could hear the backbeat of “Montana values” and “Arizona values” and the regular cymbal crash of “conservative judges,” but there was no melody. After watching Cornyn and Hegar’s debate, I clicked over to a recent Cornyn ad on YouTube. It features a middle-aged schoolteacher, with blond hair and caring eyes, passing out papers to students while praising the senator for having helped to deliver federal funds to public schools so that they could reopen safely. Cornyn then appears, nodding thoughtfully, with a mask emblazoned with the Texas state flag covering the lower half of his face. Texas is changing, in ways that Cornyn is wise to genuflect toward, and this election has the look of a blue wave. But, at the end of four years of largely unchecked conservative political power, Cornyn has neither a Trumpian case to make for his own reëlection nor a more traditional conservative one. The background checks, the money for schools—he was simply arguing for the reliability of a longtime incumbent.
The most touted contest right now, and among the best-funded, is taking place in South Carolina, where the Republican Senator Lindsey Graham is in a close race with Jaime Harrison, the forty-four-year-old associate chairman of the Democratic National Committee. In the last quarter, Harrison raised fifty-seven million dollars, mostly from liberals outside the state; with Kelly and Sara Gideon, in Maine, he is one of three Democratic candidates this cycle to raise more money in a quarter than anyone running for the Senate ever had before. Like Graham, Harrison is an obviously talented politician—he is especially good at concisely telling the stories of ordinary South Carolinians, some from his own family, and using them to point out how little Republican representatives have done to help them. But the candidates’ lone debate, on October 3rd, was most interesting because Graham, unlike most other members of his party, did not run from the President. “I think President Trump has done a good job. He rebuilt our military, he’s cut our taxes, he’s getting trade deals, he’s securing our border,” Graham said, and then tacked on the Party line. “This race is about capitalism versus socialism, conservative judges versus liberal judges, law and order versus chaos.”
The trouble for Graham was that Harrison kept also making the debate about South Carolina, and about how little Republicans had done to help alleviate suffering there, from the disastrous response to the coronavirus to the ideological refusal to accept the Obama Administration’s offer to expand Medicaid in the state. Graham countered by insisting that he knew suffering: his relatives, he kept emphasizing, worked in the textile mills. “I get it. We’re all one car wreck away from needing help,” Graham said. Many Republican incumbents have expressed worry about lockdowns suppressing the economy; Graham mentioned other side effects of the pandemic, too: “Alcoholism is up. Domestic violence.” He did not win the debate, but he also sounded like he wasn’t pretending.
Graham is in many ways a signal figure of the Republican Party, because, rather than represent a single faction, he has, at different times, represented all of them. From shortly after his election to the Senate, in 2002, he was mainly known as John McCain’s plainspoken sidekick, and joined McCain as part of the Gang of Eight pushing for immigration reform in 2012, telling his party’s Convention that year that “we’re not generating enough angry white guys to stay in business for the long term.” But, after Trump’s election, Graham became a prominent backer of the President’s agenda, a transformation that culminated in a fiery partisan display during Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings. As Jess Bidgood put it recently in a sharp profile of Graham in the Boston Globe, “the story of Graham’s vulnerability in a state he has represented in Congress since 1995 begins not with the left but with his persistent problems on the right—which he attempted to tamp down once and for all through his alliance with Trump.”
Even if you could somehow exclude Trump, and the complications of making alliances with him, the Party’s future no longer looks much like its past. Those Republicans who seem most likely to run for President in 2024—among them Tom Cotton, Nikki Haley, Josh Hawley, and Marco Rubio—have all oriented themselves to a party that is now dominated by white voters without college degrees, and by what Hawley has described as anti-cosmopolitanism. If one of these politicians does end up leading the Party, then it will have something to do with how establishment conservatives used their power during the Trump era: to impose tax cuts that exacerbated inequality and weakened the economy, and to undermine a health-care policy that Americans increasingly support and rely on. That has left the Republicans—even the Party’s central politicians—without much to brag about after years in charge. Once again, Gromer Jeffers, the journalist who moderated the Texas debate, saw it clearly. He put up a graphic from a recent poll of the state in which a strikingly large proportion of respondents had no opinion about Cornyn whatsoever. Jeffers asked the senator, “Why is it that nearly a quarter of Texans don’t know your name?”

Home: Jacob Seed/OC Chapter 37
(2 weeks later: Mara parks the ATV outside the Hope County Clinic in Holland Valley. She walks up to the door and goes inside. She freezes in the doorway. The foyer is a wreck and there’s blood splattered up the walls.). Mara: Hello? (She walks into the small office. It’s been trashed as has the other office. She goes into the main room. The examination table has been turned over and the medical equipment is gone. The three large cabinets that are usually filled with various medicines are broken and empty. There’s something written on the wall in black paint. Mara lets out a small wail and starts to sob sinking to the floor. She isn’t going to have her appointment with the doctor. The only other doctors in the county now are members of Edens Gate.
---Joseph has just finished his sermon. Most have left the church to carry out their daily tasks. Faith, John, Jacob, Joseph, Terry and Evelyn remain.). Terry: Why would Mara miss a sermon? Faith: There’s something wrong with her. She’s been acting really weird lately. Evelyn: She’s gone from being homeless and starving with nobody to having her sister back and living with all these strangers. It’s a big change. Terry: You said that everything with Holly was fine now. Evelyn: It is. They were sewing together yesterday afternoon and talking too. Faith: Then where has she gone? Evelyn: I don’t know dear. (Lexi walks in.). Lexi: Mara’s just pulled up. Evelyn: Well tell her to get in here would you dear? Lexi: Yeah. (Lexi leaves and a minute later Mara walks in.). Evelyn: Hello dear. Where were you today? Mara: What? Evelyn: Are you alright dear? You look very pale. Mara: Do I? I’m fine. Just not feeling well. Evelyn: Still? Mara: It’s being around that bliss shit. Evelyn: Hm. You’ll get used to it dear. Faith: Why weren’t you at the sermon? Mara: Because I’ve spent most of the morning with my head over the bog. Do you need me to do something coz if you don’t I’m just gonna go lie down for a bit. (She turns and walks to the door.). Faith: Sis! (Mara leaves.). Faith: See what I mean? She’s acting funny. Evelyn: Hm. I’ll go talk to her. Joseph: I’ll talk to her. (Joseph leaves the church. He catches up to Mara on her way to the barn.). Joseph: Mara? Mara: What do you want Joe? Look I’m sorry I missed your sermon but I figured you wouldn’t want me throwing up all over the floor. It would have looked like a scene from the exorcist. Joseph: My child? (He grabs her arm and turns her to face him.). Joseph: Where is this attitude coming from? Mara: What attitude? I just don’t feel well. (They reach the barn and she climbs onto the top bunk and lies down with her back to him.). Joseph: Talk to me child. What is wrong? Mara: Nothing. I just don’t feel well. Joseph: You need to eat something and drink some water. I’ll leave you to rest but I expect to see you this afternoon. We need to talk about this attitude of yours. Mara: Whatever Joe. (Joseph grits his teeth and bows his head. He doesn’t want to do this but she is forcing his hand. He grabs her and yanks her off of the bunk bed.). Mara: Hey! Joseph: Get up now and follow me. (Mara sighs angrily and follows him over to the obstacle course.). Joseph: Steve! (Steve jogs over.). Steve: Yes Father? Joseph: I want Mara to run this course until she collapses from exhaustion. Steve: Yes Father. (Joseph stares at Mara and she gets the feeling he’s reading her mind again.). Mara: You trying to kill us Joe? Joseph: You will do as your told, there will be no more attitude, no more missing sermons. Mara: I wasn’t feeling- Joseph: Do you want a place with us or not? Mara: There’s no place for me. Never was. Joseph: That’s not true. You have a place here with us. You are throwing it away. Now run the course. (Mara sighs.). Joseph: Without any attitude. (Mara really doesn’t feel like running. She feels lightheaded and sick. She starts running the course but a few minutes later she has collapsed in the dirt.). Joseph: Up you get Mara. (She doesn’t move. Steve walks over to her and rolls her over.). Steve: She’s passed out. (Joseph sighs and lifts her up carrying over to the barn and lying her down on the bottom bunk. He brushes her hair out of her face. A minute later she stirs then sits up before throwing up on the floor. She then starts to sob. Joseph frowns.). Joseph: Why are you crying? Mara: Coz it’s all crap innit? Joseph: What is? Mara: My life. Just one big joke Joe. Joseph: No. You have a new life now. Mara: Until it’s gone. Happiness doesn’t last for me. Joseph: It can if you let it. (She leans against him and he puts an arm around her.). Mara: Sorry. Joseph: For? Mara: Acting like a stroppy teenager giving her dad attitude. (Joseph can’t help but smile slightly.). Joseph: You are forgiven my child. (She looks up at him. He looks down at her, their noses are inches apart.). Mara: How do you do that? Joseph: Do what? Mara: Be so calm all the time. Joseph: There is no need to be angry. It achieves nothing. (He brushes a hand through her hair. She closes her eyes.). Mara: I need to pee. (She giggles.). Mara: Sorry. (She gets up and sways slightly. He gets up and supports her. She leans against him.). Mara: How can you be so warm when you walk around wearing nothing? You know I think you’re a wizard Joe. Joseph: I’m a what? Mara: A wizard. (Then she laughs.). Mara: You just quoted Harry Potter. Joseph: I did? Mara: Yeah. (They walk over to the toilets and she goes inside the small cubicle. The toilets are wooden and are just really holes in the ground. When she is done she goes over to the spigot and washes her hands.). Mara: Guess I’d better get back to the course. Joseph: I have a better idea. Mara: You do? Joseph: I don’t want you collapsing on me again. (She follows him back to his church. They go inside and Faith, John and Jacob look up.). Faith: Sis. Mara: Hey. (Joseph picks up a white book and hands it to Mara.). Joseph: I don’t think you have yet read my word. Everybody reads it. So that they understand. (Mara takes the book and looks at the floor.). Mara: Okay. Joseph: You need to be resting and I thought it a perfect opportunity for you to read. (Mara doesn’t say anything.). Faith: Just read it sis. Okay? (Mara can feel her cheeks burning and she knows she’s blushing.). Mara: I’ll see you later then. (She turns and starts to walk off.). Faith: Sis? Mara: Yeah? Faith: I was thinking...We should spend the day together tomorrow. We don’t see each other often enough. Mara: Okay. I’ll see you tomorrow then. (Mara leaves.). Faith: There’s something wrong. The way she’s acting...It’s like she just doesn’t care anymore...About anything. John: Maybe she’s done something wrong. Faith: Like what? She’s been doing everything to help everyone here and she’s been trying to fit in. (John shrugs.). Faith: Trust you to think the worst of her John. John: I wasn’t. I was just making a suggestion. Faith: I’ll talk to her tomorrow. I will find out what’s wrong. John: Hm. I can talk to her. Faith: No. I’ll do it. We’re sisters we tell each other everything. John: Clearly not. (Holly has walked in and has been listening.). Holly: Are you talking about Mara? Faith: It’s very rude to eavesdrop you know? Holly: I couldn’t help but overhear. Faith: How are you two getting on now? (Holly smiles. But inside she is boiling with rage. She saw Mara yesterday talking to John and they were close...Very close. They were laughing together and then Mara hugged him. In front of everyone! Hugged him! Mara has told her, assured her, that there is nothing going on but Holly doesn’t believe her. She wants Mara gone.). Holly: Yes...I’m still getting to know her but we’re okay. I realise how wrong it was to treat her that way. I let my sin get the better of me but we’re all good now. Faith: Good. Holly: Though... Faith: What? Holly: Well...She’s been acting weird right? Faith: Yes. Do you know why? Holly: Well...She doesn’t want to be here. Faith: What? Holly: Well we’ve noticed her sneaking off several times. When I asked her about it she didn’t say much. Evelyn told me that she had a doctor’s appointment a couple of weeks ago but- Joseph: She did. She has already told me where she was. The doctor at the clinic in Holland Valley confirmed to us that she had been to see him. He also told me what he treated her for. Holly: Oh. Joseph: She had an infection and he gave her antibiotics. Holly: She could have just seen a doctor here. Joseph: She wasn’t aware of that. I also think that she was embarrassed. (Jacob is frowning.). Holly: I see. Well this morning when she was meant to be here she wasn’t. Joseph: She wasn’t feeling well. Holly: Yes but where was she? She wasn’t here. If she was unwell why wasn’t she in bed? She left the compound again. When she came back she seemed very upset and...Scared. (Everyone looks confused.). Holly: I think she’s meeting up with someone. John: You mean you think she is going to betray us? How? Holly: I don’t know. But she doesn’t want to be here. She only joined for you Faith. She isn’t happy and I’m worried that she’s planning something. Faith: What? Holly: Well she keeps sneaking away and not telling anyone where she’s been. So I think she’s thinking of leaving and she’s been meeting someone who’s gonna help her. Faith: I don’t believe you. Holly: Well I’m sorry I know she’s your sister but you have to consider- Faith: Yes she’s my sister and there is no proof whatsoever of what you are saying. All we have is your word, your assumptions, there could be a perfectly good explanation as to why Mara keeps sneaking off and it could have nothing to do with the fact that she is thinking of leaving us. Leaving me. Holly: Could always follow her. John: Hm. Could keep an eye on her. Clearly there’s something going on. Faith: I trust my sister. I don’t believe you. (Faith walks off leaving the church.). Holly: I didn’t mean to upset her. It’s just strange that Mara keeps sneaking off isn’t it? Joseph: Hm. You should not make assumptions and spread rumours Holly. Unless you are sure of the truth. This is how innocent people get punished for things they have not done. This is how people’s good names are slandered by all. It all starts with one rumour, one piece of gossip. Holly: Yes Father. I understand. Joseph: Good. (Holly leaves.). Joseph: What do you think Jacob? Jacob: About what? Women gossiping? I ain’t really interested. It’s pathetic. Joseph: No. I meant what do you think about Mara? Do you think she would leave us? That she would betray her family? (Jacob thinks. He doesn’t know her all that well but he is yet to see her run from anything.). Jacob: I don’t know. What’s it matter? Ain’t like nothings gonna happen. Don’t matter if she runs or if she tries to bring people here. They won’t budge us. Joseph: No. But I will be deeply disappointed if Holly is right about Mara. Jacob: You just said so yourself that it is just gossip Joe. Joseph: Yes. It is. Jacob: Holly doesn’t like Mara. She’s jealous of her because she’s such good friends with John. I think that says more about Holly than it does Mara. (Jacob shrugs before leaving the church.).
