#i also have to write a timed essay in history :)
Text
Has the sigil been beaten to death? Yes. Am I going to write a small essay about it anyway? Also yes.
The sigil is such a monumental piece of the story, guys. No matter who you ship, Arthur giving Merlin his mother’s sigil is outrageously important to the validation of their relationship and to Arthur’s character growth, AND a view into his evolving perception of his traitorous family, which is probably why they were cut bc why would we want THAT. I will explain.
Arthur resists verbalizing his friendship with Merlin so much, but he says a lot more with his actions - sacrificing himself for Merlin time and again, confiding in him, keeping him close even though he’s not really supposed to. The sigil is a tangible piece of himself that he gives to Merlin, inviting him into his family and reminding him, even if he can’t quite do it with words, how close they really are.
But his FAMILY. I think that Arthur’s perception of his family is really starting to shift here. He doesn’t give Merlin something that makes him a Pendragon. He doesn’t give him his father’s ring or a dagger encrusted with the symbol of the dragon. He gives him his MOTHER’S sigil, the symbol of the bird, which is of course very symbolic of the relationship between Uther and Ygraine vs. Arthur and Merlin, but it also means that Arthur doesn’t want to associate Merlin with the side of the family that connects via his father - Uther and Morgana, ruthless and hard and traitorous. Arthur didn’t know that Agravaine had betrayed him yet. He wants Merlin to be family, but I think he wants to try everything he can to associate Merlin with the soft bits of his family history - the memory of a kind, gentle mother and a loyal uncle. This, to me, suggests that Arthur is really feeling his own departure from his father’s ways and trying to find a part of himself that was maybe like his mother instead. That would have been important if Merlin had told him about his magic earlier, because Arthur maybe wouldn’t have wanted to react as his father would have.
I just think keeping the scene in would have changed everything about the show from that point on. WHICH IS WHY IT IS CANON IN MY HEAD.

I just did a lot of research on death of the author recently for one of my hobbies (I'm a book youtuber lmao) and people misinterpret what that means alllll the time and now it's one of my biggest pet peeves haha. The original french essay, and the context with which it was written, has been completely twisted.
The original essay was written at a time when literary analysis was focused ONLY on an authors intended meaning, and that there was a singular CORRECT answer and interpretation, and you would find it by researching everything about the author. Death of the Author posited that an individuals reaction and interpretation to a piece of art outside of this was *also* valid, and that it shouldn't be ignored as irrelevant. That art could stand on it's own and that wasn't immediately to be dismissed.
People now tend to use it in one of two ways: as a binary (you can only have death of the author! There can't be author understanding AND personal understanding!) OR as a way to say "I don't like this author's political stances but still like their work" which is even further from the original meaning lmao.
Anyway, you and Jaime understand this clearly already but it drives me crazy when people use it to act like you can't be interested in Taylor's intended meaning and history as WELL as your own interpretation of the art. Both are valid, and often both are necessary to fully understand literature and other art.
i was literally just about to make this post so i'm glad you did the work, thank you bestie. also, it's not a law, it's a lens or theory of interacting with the work. it's not the only way. and btw, it's already happening with taylor's work (in that people worldwide relate her music to their lives already, her music already lives on beyond her and interpretations change per person and with the culture, and no one is being forced to only take taylor's experiences into account when interpreting her work?)
what people mean is that they find gossip about her writing to be annoying. which is fine. but they can just say that lmao

*lying in the dirt staring at the starry night sky* i think the secret to maintaining a good name online is to simply not share personal information, block the haters n libelers, and have a social life outside the internet
#and also to not make 'discourse' your personality bc god knows we have enough bitches in fandom milk-fed on internet discourse#in other words i'm having thoughts on big name fan...hood? -ishness? i'm not sure but anyway That and how it's dehumanizing#there's an essay from 2006 i'm rereading (i will clarify that i did not read it in 2006. i did not have access to the internet in 2006)#about why no one ever wants to admit they're a big name fan; as written by someone who has come to terms w/their bnf status#and it's got this kind of tongue-in-cheek vibe to it and the advice it gives; like it was written by someone completely exhausted by it#or who has seen what it does to a person firsthand and needs to vent about it while also making sure people take it seriously#i want to say it's almost like that kind of dire gallows humor where you know no matter what you say you Will have haters on your ass#it sounds vain to say that i was ever a bnf anywhere. but i can't say i never had a name at all anywhere#and watching that buildup towards what seemed like an inevitable fate as a bnf someday in some fandom soon#it's part of the complex cocktail that motivates my anonymity in gnshn#bc i've had my ideas treated as untouchable; my writing treated as The Way to present a premise (both accounts towards orchid)#i'm glad i've never had like. a parasocial experience or anything where in trying to compliment my writing they compliment my person instead#the uncertainty of my person that comes w/anonymity is such a reprieve tho. to draw attn when i deliberately play down anything#that i feel might bring it makes what i receive more earned n more focused on what i want to talk abt (the writing)#there are def some things that can only be understood through time and watching your own history grow n build n connect w/others#until you are suddenly made acutely aware that you do not exist in a vacuum is one of them#and i understand the urge to cut most if not all of it away and start anew bc that *is* terrifying in all honesty#花話

I accidentally missed WIP Wednesday again :( I’m not going to post any snippets this week because tbh I’m running out of things to post 😅 I’ve been super busy at school and I just haven’t been writing much lately because my mind is always on other things, it seems like. But I will do this much, at least, a little peek into my writing process:
When I write fics, sometimes if I’m stuck and don’t want to write the exact scene that needs to happen next, but I have Thoughts for a different scene in that work that need to be written down, I’ll put intermediate actions/scenes in brackets to remind myself how to get from point a to point b. I have one that I just wrote that says “LZ doing LZ things and WWX being sappy about it.” And if that doesn’t sum up wangxian then I don’t know what does.

Resources for Gaza/Palestine
On the last day of the strike, and in the days/weeks following the end of the strike, please give your time to these resources and share them with others.
Donation Links:
The PCRF has been able to bring tangible resources to those in Gaza.
World Food Program has also provided food inside the Gaza Strip, and Hind has reported on this a few times.
This PayPal belongs to someone on the ground in Gaza who has been able to distribute aid directly to people in Gaza. You can find more information and proof of these purchases at @helpgazachildren.
UNRWA recently had their funding cut off by the US. They bring aid across Falasteen but you can choose to donate specifically to Gaza on the page I linked.
Gazaesims is a direct way you can donate esims to Gaza to help those inside the Strip stay connected to the rest of the world. If you have any questions about donating esims you can ask me directly!
Anera provides relief items to those in Gaza.
Islamic Relief does work globally. You can choose to donate specifically to their Palestine Emergency Aid program (name might be different depending on if you're on the US site or the global site).
Educational Resources/People to Follow:
DecolonizePalestine is my go-to when giving resources to people who are new to hearing about what's happening in Falasteen. It's a comprehensive, easily navigated archive of the history of Falasteen and the occupation, common myths surrounding the occupation, and resources for learning.
The Palestine Academy has courses on the history of Falasteen, resources on actions to take/education, and resources for Gaza.
IMEU provides news and education about all of Falasteen including Gaza, and provides fact sheets, photo essays, and personal testimonies from Palestinians. You can find their Instagram here.
Hidden Palestine tells the history of Falasteen through photos. They also provide updates about Gaza and other parts of Falasteen on their Instagram.
Subhi is a Palestinian-American who does a lot of work and makes educational videos about Falasteen and Gaza. He also provides many resources and shares news about Gaza/Falasteen in general.
Mohammed El-Kurd is a Palestinian writer who became well-known after defending his family from being evicted from their home for settler theft in Sheikh Jarrah, Jerusalem. He shares news, provides educational resources, and shares his own videos/writing on the topic of Gaza and Falasteen in general.
Salma Shawa (anat.international) is a Palestinian from Gaza who is not currently in Gaza. She shares videos, news, and resources about Gaza.
Noura Erakat is a Palestinian-American lawyer and activist who shares education, news, resources about Gaza and Falasteen.
News/Coverage/Updates:
Bisan is a young journalist on the ground in the south of Gaza
Hind is a journalist and reporter who has mostly been reporting from the middle areas of the Gaza Strip.
Bayan is a journalist and photographer on the ground in Gaza. She gives updates on what's happening around Gaza City.
Motaz is a journalist and photographer who was on the ground in Gaza until a few days ago. He continues to share news and stories from Gaza.

Middle East Eye brings news from Gaza and Falasteen. Here is their instagram.
Electronic Intifada has news about Falasteen along with updates about what's happening in Gaza.
Organizations for Palestine:
Palestinian Youth Movement (resources, actions, organizing, protests)
Adalah Justice Project (actions, organizing, protests)
American Muslims for Palestine (education, organizing, advocacy)
USCPR (resources, actions, updated protest lists)
Actions You Can Take:
BDS provides a list of companies to boycott/pressure to divest from Israel.
Global Protest List
US: Call your representatives to demand a ceasefire now.
Email template for Congress.
USCPR action toolkit.
Canada: Call your MPs.
UK: Write to your MPs.
I feel like I shouldn't have to say this, but in case it wasn't clear: continue to spread awareness about what is happening and Gaza and about Falasteen as often and as loudly as you can. When you see news coming out of Gaza, allow yourself to be moved to action. Share news and resources with others, pressure your governments to call for a ceasefire, make sure your money is not going to a corporation that supports Israeli apartheid, and above all else, do not lose hope. The horrors we are seeing now are not normal, nor will they ever be; use the resources and tools you have at your disposal to take whatever action you can to stop the genocide. And when we do get a ceasefire, we must keep on pushing and doing the work until we achieve a totally liberated Falasteen.
From the river to the sea 🇵🇸
*note: falasteeni friends please feel free to add on any donation links or resources you know of that i may have missed!

my professors should know that i do hours of research on topics to write the most unintelligible essays and if my essay is good that means i didn't even look at the material. if my essay screams 'edited in 5 minutes' then i can and will discuss the topic at length but if it looks sooooo good and sooooo nice and gets me an A i have no idea what i was writing about
