Tattoo Refs: The Erdennian Characters
Last month I was working on ideas for my characters' updated tattoos, since some of them were in a big need for updates lol. Starting with the Erdennian characters, both because of Erdennia's big tattoo culture but also because the original post was from over 3 years ago, so a lot has changed since then. I also added in Idalia and Ren(whose tattoo was first shared here), since they are half-Erdennian too. A lot of the new ideas are kind of vague in their designs since I still need to figure those out, so they are mostly location ideas but I also expanded upon the ones from the original post a little bit too. But yeah, I hope you enjoy!

- The Royal Family
. Demeter: Has her family's traditional ruling tattoos across her chest and collarbones, with her motif being suns, and another sun tattoo between her shoulder-blades. She has a small and simple lotus design by her left ear, and a small and simple daffodil by her right ear, these being her mothers' favorite flowers. A small one on her right ankle, of her husband and children's names in the shape of the infinity symbol. A piece of orchid and camellia flowers on her left thigh(the flowers that her mothers' names mean), and her husband's + children's favorite flowers on her right thigh.
. Enki: The same as before, has a giant back piece of a tree(a connection to his magic and dryad status) that has the names of his wife + children and parents + siblings on the branches. He would now have either one or two forearm half-sleeves in addition, but I don't know what of yet.
. Gaia: Has her family's traditional ruling tattoos across her chest and collarbones, with her motif being hearts. She also has a rose between her shoulder-blades(being dedicated to Rosia), one on her left lower-leg of her and her family's birth flowers, and symmetrical ones of vines starting from her hips and curling around her mid-thighs. In the future she would get something on her right lower-leg dedicated to her other friends(incorporating something that reminds her of each one), water lilies on her left forearm for Ren, and aster flowers + a forest tree on her right forearm for her future children.
. Avani: Still has a year before she can get one, but her first would be a daisy on the back of her neck. She would also eventually get her other favorite flowers scattered across her body(with a possible half-sleeve, thigh piece, and/or lower-leg sleeve), and once she is older in her 20's, she would also get something dedicated to Vernon, her closest friend in life.
. Beaumont: Still too young to get one as he is only a child, nor does he have any ideas, but he does find the concept of them cool enough.
- The Other Characters
. Rosia: Has full-color roses going down the entire length of her back/spine. Also has a hip/thigh one, this one also being of roses(but in a different style) as she is a little extra in that department. In the future she would also get a big tattoo dedicated to her spouse and future children, this either being on her arm or leg(of their favorite flowers).
. Carmelo: Has full-color tattoos ranging across his back of many different plants and flowers, with the main focus being of roses. Would also get tattoos dedicated to both the family he grew up in and the one he wants to start with his wife, these possibly being full sleeves(one of herbs and plants for his kids).
. Vernon: Like Avani, he doesn't have any currently as he still has to wait a couple of years before he could get one. Not super focused on getting one, but he would get a piece of wheat on his forearm as a nod to farming(coming from a farmer family), and when he is in his 20's, he would get something dedicated to Avani.
- The Half-Erdennian Characters
. Idalia: Doesn't get any till she is in her 30's, since she never lived in Erdennia and didn't learn about the culture till she met and got to know Gaia more. Once she does she would get quite a few, these including full sleeves that spill out onto her shoulders/back, a half-back piece, and a giant hip/thigh piece. These are mostly witch-related, but a few would be in honor of her late caretaker that took her in after her parents died.
. Ren: Currently has one, of water lilies blossoming down his back. Chose them as a silent nod to his chosen name(since he was not out about being trans yet at his ceremony), and had them ‘blossom’ as a symbol of his hope to blossom and grow from his life at the time. Does not get any more for a super long time for many different reasons, but after he meets and eventually marries Gaia in the future he would get vines along his arm, as a dedication and 'thank you' to her. He would also get something dedicated to his future children too, as he always had a secret soft spot for children.

1 Impossble Sausage (vegan), pieced up and pan-fried in olive oil
1 cup of white rice
3 yellow squash, sliced and steamed (seasoned with pepper, Lawry's season salt, and olive oil).
I almost made myself two sandwhiches this morning, one with egg, and one without. But i figured that would be too much for breakfast since I wasnt terribly hungy and planned to nap afterward (I didnt rip). But the biscuit that i got on a visit to my grandma's over the weekend definitely gave my breakfast more volume that made me feel fuller. That couples with plently of water to drink. The clemintimes added a nice sweet element to my breakfast and also some fruit portion that was enough for that time of day.
As for dinner last night, swell as usual with those ingredients! Cant go too wrong with yellow squash (though it is easy to over or under salt them lol. Didnt this time tho), and white rice truly goes with everything.
I made the Impossible brat last over a week! They only come 4 a pack, which is a bit pricey for how much they are (when not on sale, theyre almost $10). But tbh, its one of those things that you pay for to get the quality AND healthier, more sustainable alternative out of. Its def a treat and I figured I can make it last by piecing it apart as well as spacing out days when I plan to cook it (for instance, I decide one day I'll eat vegan, but trhe other I'll be only pescatarian and the next vegetarian). At that price I can still feel like its worth it, and the oast few times I went to the store they were on sale. So I'm def keeping lookout for those opportunities bc I love this stuff! Great umami taste and crispy sausage texture (its cute how it starts out red to resemble raw meat, but for me thats not necessary. A substitute doesnt have to evoke its original in any way except mainly flavor. I digress lol).
I enjoy cooking a lot now and will soon experiment with meal prep for days in advance, preferably up to 2 (then eventually the whole week, or at least a week of options, frozen to have ready for later). If anyone has some good meal prep regiment ideas (esp for neurodivergent folks), id appreciate u dropping them off in this post!

Sourdough discard biscuits
I frankensteined this from a bunch of recipes so I have to write it down because it worked better than last time. These are still flatter than I'd like so next time I might try mixing the sourdough discard with the flour, sugar and butter and letting that rise before adding the baking powder/soda and salt. But the texture was delicate if not actually flaky and it was a nice use of the discard.
Start by feeding your starter so you have 285 g + however much you want to save in your fridge. I usually keep about 80g so I fed mine half water and half whole-wheat/white flour mix (50-50) by weight to add up to about 365g.
Put your fridge starter away and leave the 285g out on the counters for about 8-12 hours to ripen. It should get bubbly and sour smelling.
Preheat oven to 425F
Mix 2 cups AP flour, 1 tbls baking powder, 1 tbls sugar, 1 tsp salt, and 1/2 tsp baking soda in a bowl. Cut 1/2 cup cold butter into the bowl and use fingers or a pastry blender to flatten the butter until it is all dime-size pieces.
Give your starter a stir to deflate it and check the volume. Add buttermilk or yogurt to bring it up to 1.5 cups total volume.
Pour your starter/milk mixture into the bowl with the other ingredients and stir gently to make a dough mass.
Pour the dough out onto a clean floured counter and flatten it out to about 1/2" thickness. Use a biscuit cutter (or a jar lid like me) to cut out rounds and place them on a parchment paper lined sheet pan. I got about 20 rounds with my standard mason jar lid.
Brush with egg wash or butter and bake for 20 minutes or until golden.

A bit of a convoluted setup, but I wanted to do something a little less directly halloweeny for October’s comics in 2019 and came up with this idea - I always have been a big fan of the ghostly-voices-heard-in-a-recording trope.

It’s only barely visible in the earlier panels with a speech bubble covering it in the one shown above here, but Cammie’s hair clamp from #117 is resting next to her bedside table.

For story arcs, I’ve always tried to make every single Chamomile Comic’s context possible to piece together even if someone hasn’t read the ones that came before it as best I can, but in this case the previous comic was so particular and unusual that Cammie would literally need to describe the entire scene that late readers will have just read, so I made a joke out of it instead, almost serving as a marker where I made the decision to not get hung up on it anymore when it’s too hard, lol.

I didn’t choose Layla at random, it’s an important note that she’s the one who bought into Cammie’s nonsense here. It’s never really been the subject of any focus or story arc but I do think Cammie and Layla’s friendship has an unspoken flavour to it that feels a bit different from Cammie and Brianna’s, even though Cam and Bri are besties.
Having said that it presented me with the decision of whether to depict her without her hijab, and at this point in time I leaned away from the idea. Being brutally honest, I kind of expected people to make a big deal out of seeing her without it - it’s sort of an unfortunate but understandable downside of also being a femme-focused pin-up artist, having a cast of women, and drawing it all in a cute art style. A lot of people are here who admire cute feminine character art and I’d be a hypocrite to say there’s anything inherently wrong with that when that’s literally what half my art is! I think I was right with this judgement too, because I definitely did get a comment or two from folks who were all “aww I thought we were gonna get to see her hair”. I know there’s tons of people who like me would shift their mindset to think nothing of it, but I know the folks who don’t would kind of bug me, so I think it’s easier to just not.
Having said all of this, I can’t deny it was a really fun artistic challenge to come up with a way to hide her lack of hijab in the nighttime scene without it feeling intentionally like an Austin Powers prop censorship gag - at least that was my hope!
Realistically I don’t think she would be wearing a cap around Cammie in the morning scene - in more recent comics of course we had another scene where Cammie and Layla shared a room, and I decided to go for a middleground where the point of her hijab is still kept for the audience but I was a little more relaxed about it, since I’ve read threads from folks who wear hijabs who feel it’s misrepresentational to depict them being worn 24/7.

Not much to say here.  I swear there was a story or inspiration behind the gag of Cammie’s sleeptalking, but it’s gone forever now! I did enjoy deciding that the pure and innocent Cammie has horrifically unsettling dreams that she thinks nothing of.
#133 - Cereal

This was just a one-off gag I had in the idea bank for a while that I never quite knew how to do. The punchline of “all these cereals have expired” was always there and this could have just been a Cammie at home talking to herself strip, but somehow said punchline didn’t feel as funny talking to herself as it did to another character, no idea why. This arc was a perfect opportunity to finally use it even though it doesn’t tie into the actual story of the arc whatsoever (which is fine of course, it’s November by now).

Cammie’s cereals are:
Sugar Crunch (with added Vitamin), a broad parody of sweet cereal Moist Nuts, which is just some funny words Frog Flakes, with regular JezMM mascot Frogy of course Mostly Bran, a parody of All-Bran Wheated Bix, a parody of Weetabix Corny Puns, both a parody of Corn Flakes and one of many silly cereal names that showed up in my old comic Phantasm Dyad, in the episode where they were tracking down the cause of a gaggle of inanimate object ghosts found on the beach - a Cereal Killer.

Funnily enough, another cereal in that comic was “Corned Flakes”, which is basically the same joke as Wheated Bix. Mr. Burns saying “I am enjoying this Iced Cream” in The Simpsons was one of those humour-defining moments for me as a kid I think.

Just complaining through my characters here.  I hate when the clocks go back and would always rather have more light in the afternoon than the morning.  Having the daylight end at 4pm is so depressing, but waking up in the dark and having it get light as your day begins is sort of romantic to me.
I do like how this one has sort of unique lighting - very few comics that take place exactly at dusk like this and I tried to capture that vibe even though it’s just a standard blurry background.

unbelievably easy plant-based meals: moroccan vegetable tagine
WHAT YOU NEED:
veggies of your choice! truly anything goes as it’s just a big chunky veggie stew. I used sweet potato, yellow bell pepper, onion, butternut squash, eggplant, and carrot (all chopped into bigger 3/4th to 1” pieces since it’ll be simmering for a long time)
2 cans diced tomatoes (I used fire-roasted for extra flavor)
1 can chickpeas (optional) 
3.5 cups broth or water 
3-5 cloves minced garlic
SPICES (cinnamon, cardamom, coriander, turmeric, cumin, cayenne, garlic powder, ginger, harissa if you have it or sub paprika)
dried apricots or dried cherries or raisins (roughly chopped)
zest & juice of 1 lemon
HOW TO MAKE IT
just a prep note: you will cook all the veggies separately in batches for a couple min in the big deep soup pot first before combining them to make the stew. that means you can chop the next veg while the previous one cooks to save time!
heat oil in a big deep soup pot over medium-high heat. chop your onions & mince garlic. once the oil is sizzling, toss in the onions + garlic and cook for 2 min. chop the next veggie while the onion/garlic is cooking.
once the onions are done, scrape them into a big bowl and throw in the next chopped veggie while you start cutting up the third one. keep repeating this till you’re finished and have a big bowl of lightly sautéed veggies. most veggies will cook ~3 min or until they’re a little softened.
make the spice blend while your last batch of veggies cook. I don’t measure usually I just dump spices into a bowl in roughly the proportions the recipe calls for. this one was heavy on the cinnamon/cardamom/cumin/coriander and then a little lighter on the ginger powder/turmeric/cayenne (you can omit the last one if you don’t like heat).
when the veggies are all done, dump ALL the veggies back into the soup pot and mix in your spice blend. salt & pepper generously. let it all cook for a min or two as you mix to coat all the veggies in the spices.
dump in two cans of diced tomatoes. salt lightly and stir for a minute to combine. you can toss in your chopped dried apricots at this point too—I just eyeballed the amount but about 1/3 a cup maybe?
dump in the 3.5 cups of water or broth (your choice—I used broth but apparently water is more authentic lol). cook uncovered over medium high heat for ten minutes. taste and re-spice/salt as necessary. you probably will need to! I added more cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and cumin at this stage.
lower to a simmer. cook uncovered for 25-30 min or until the squash and sweet potato are sooooo fork-tender and yummy.
add the drained chickpeas. taste the broth again and adjust spices as needed, then cook 5 more min.
add the zest and juice of one lemon. don’t skip this step as the ZING of the lemon takes this dish to the next level. you can also add some big handfuls of baby spinach if you, like me, are hooked on wilting leafy greens into stews. I also added parsley at this stage.
SERVE!!!! you can serve it over couscous or rice or eat it with the bread of your choice (I made whole-wheat pita) but it’s absolutely hearty enough to eat on its own.

I came close to doubting my sanity because SO many food and I got ptsd flashbacks from the time I recapped 200+ dishes of Royal Feast lol. And Tumblr has a 10 pics limit per post and I don't feel like making these two eps more than two posts, so I resorted to cutting the food scenes into videos.
To my further frustration the HD video I downloaded of this ep had terrible hard subs and I ain't gonna redownload it so please turn a blind eye, I'll type the proper translation anyway and there's the Chinese subs.

The food is incorporated in the backstory of the son of Chenghua emperor (featured in ep 11), and his Empress. He was famous for being one of the two monogamous emperors of China.
Beginning of Spring (Lichun)- Spring Rolls
Other Traditions: Horse racing, wear Nao'e headdresses.
Spring Rolls originated in Eastern Jin. Thinly rolled wheat dough is served with vegetables to be wrapped in it. The emperors of Ming would award the officials with this spring platter to welcome the spring.

6th Century AD recipe for rice cake by pressing smoothly pounded cooked white rice. Ciba was created later inspired by this, by slicing, drying and deep frying it, then covering in sugar and crushed sesame seeds.

What are your favorite air fryer recipes, please?
Hello! Sorry it took a while to answer, today was very busy :)
I don't really have recipes specific for using an air fryer. I cook a lot of things in it that I would normally use the oven for, and I've learned to tweak the time and temperature to not burn things or dry them out. I love using it in the summer when it's too hot to cook with the oven, but I'd still like some baked chicken or roasted carrots. It takes a lot of trial and error to figure out the right settings lol
Sunday I made garlic pasta with chicken and broccoli, and I cooked the chicken thighs and broccoli together in the air fryer while I boiled the noodles. I chopped them both up into bite sized pieces and gave them a light toss in olive oil, then I cooked the chicken for 4 minutes on fry at 350F, and then added the broccoli for another 6 minutes. The chicken was cooked through and a little crispy in spots, and the broccoli was the perfect level of still a little bit crunchy with the added flavor of being fried in a wok. Then I tossed it all into some whole wheat spaghetti noodles with some garlic, some salt, some oregano, and a whole bunch of parmesan cheese. Altogether it took me less than half an hour.
That was as fancy as I get tho.... lots of times it's fries, corn dogs, biscuits, hot wings... lol

Ooc: Hello! I remember that you posted a headcanon about Jin hating the food textures that did not match together; such as fruits added in yogurt and potatoes with corn. Are there other types of food textures he hates? (Luna) 🐰
Hm! Not really sure if I can think of any right now. But about the whole fruits in yogurt and potatoes with corn. The thing is, Jin will dislike any smooth / soft foods that have harder little pieces in them. He doesn't feel like they belong, and they gross him out. Therefore, fruits in yogurts, to him, goes against what yogurt is supposed to be. Same with corn in mashed potatoes. It makes him gag if he tries to eat foods like this lol.
I guess I'd say he dislikes other foods / drinks that similar to this. For example, he doesn't like oats / wheats in his bread. He also doesn't like his orange juice with pulp.

Update... Omgosh... My whole house smells so good right now... Once the rolls finished rising... I brushed with egg... Sprinkled with more cheese... Added a few extra slices of Jalapenos to each roll... Soooo soft and yummy... I would say this is a success... Not quite spicy enough for me though... Next time I'll use some Habanero's too. But still very good. I really love the crispy cheesy bottoms. I will type up the recipe and add it later... 😍
Recipe added....
1.75 cups warm water
6 T. Whipping cream powder
2 eggs
.5 cup sugar
8 cups white flour
1 cup wheat flour
3 teaspoons yeast
1 1/3 cup sourdough starter
2 teas salt
1 cup butter
Note: I do not pack my flour tight into the cup. Liquid measurements can vary depending upon the thickness of your starter and the actual weight of your flour. But then again this is what makes us rebels. Lol. No scale.
Also: I warm my flour up before use. 1.5 minutes in the microwave... stirring every 30 seconds. Trust me this helps a lot where proof time is concerned. Especially when your house is cold like mine.
Mix all ingredients except the salt and butter. I used KitchenAid. I used the low setting #1 just until most of the flour is incorporated and #2 for approx 8 minutes. Until mixed well and no longer sticking to sides of bowl. Please KNOW that this is a LOT of dough. Borderline toooo much for the KitchenAid. But I always make it work by stopping and pushing dough back down often.
Add salt then mix for another minute or 2.
Add butter and mix until completely incorporated.
Note: The dough will be VERY soft and tacky... but should not be too gooey and too sticky. It should hold its shape a bit when you dump it out of the bowl.
I dump the dough out onto oiled counter and cut in half.
Knead each half briefly just to form into nice balls. Place each into an oiled bowl. Cover and let rest 1 hour or until doubled.
Roll into logs and place in loaf pans. I used 1 extra large 1000 gram pan. But this would make 2 - 1000 gram loaves or 4 regular sized loaves without a problem. Allow to rise again until at least doubled. This took about 50 minutes.
Score top if you choose. I did one long slit down the center.
Preheat oven to 425°. Place loaf pan in oven. Immediately turn heat down to 375° I baked this one large loaf for 46 minutes. I am not quite sure how long it would take to cook a regular size loaf.
I baked until bread registered 206°.
Note: if you do not have whipping cream powder or powdered milk replace the water using whatever milk you have. Whether it's cow milk... goat milk etc... 😍
For the Jalapeno Cheese rolls...
I used 1/2 of this batch of dough... Patted it into a rough rectangle shape approximately a half an inch thick. Divided into 12 pieces... Sprinkled liberally with jalapeno chunks and shredded cheese. I used three large deseeded jalapenos... but I have no idea the amount of cheese. Formed into balls. Placed on parchment covered baking sheet equally spaced. Let rise for at least an hour. Was probably a bit longer because I had my loaf of bread baking and I had to wait for that to be done. Brushed with scrambled raw egg. Sprinkled with more cheese and added a few slices of Jalapenos on top. Baked at 350° for approx 35 minutes. Final temp of baked roll was 208°.

Buy Sizzling Or Chilly Pack Or Wraps Microwavable Heated Body
I was curious if anyone’s had an problems with mildew or mildew with their packs after adding important oils and heating them over time? It’s not something microwaveable heat wraps I’ve seen mentioned but I do wish to verify. I have made them with flax seed and I suppose it stays hot longer, I’ve alao used wheat, rice, corn which odor so good it makes you want a snack lol.
This heating pad is principally used for the neck and shoulders, back, waist, legs and different stomach to supply heat and comfort for the entire body. At the identical time, the new gel pack are made of high quality polyethylene materials, which has excellent insulation performance and can protect the knees. Some breeds can walk HELLA fast though. Most horses will fill the same spot/hole where their front hoof was with their back hoof on the same side. If they overstep they clip their fetlock (joint lookin bit above the hoof) or pastern (bit between the hoof and fetlock) and can injure themselves.

Now trotting. The middle gait, a person can jog next to a trot at a comfortable pace but if you push them a little horses can trot faster than your average HS track endurance athlete. Once again some breeds can trot HELLA fast. This is a two beat gait in that two diagonally opposite legs are moving in unison. In some english saddles (I’ll get into that later if we have class time) it’s easier to post while the horse is trotting rather than sit for the gait. That just means you stand up in the irons (stirrups on an english saddle, we’ll also cover that later) at the same time that one of the front legs moves forward. 
Also, see how the trotting horse’s head looks? That’s how they travel when they’re relaxed and attentive. The tucked head thing you see Roach doing is because there’s tension on the reigns and Henry learned to ride for an english seat not a western pleasure seat (might get into those but they’re really not important)

Time for the Canter/Lope. This is a three beat gait so that means two legs are moving in unison and the other two are not. Horses canter/lope fast. This is the go-time gait. Some performance/dressage horses are trained to canter extremely slow but if we’re talking transportation trained horses they’re not gonna be that kind of slow. Your average human is not gonna be able to keep up with this for long if at all. This varies in speed too. There's a rather casual canter seen in the gif directly below, then below that is the balls to the wall canter/lope that most horse people just refer to as a run. That’s as fast as they can go.

Bridle - this is the one that you use while you ride, it holds the bit in their mouth. There’s millions of different types of bridles but they’re usually made out of leather even now. sometimes you get rope/nylon ones but I don’t trust them.
Reins - connect to the bit and you use them to steer and control speed. Horses trained in western or one handed riding will ‘neck rein’ which means if you move your hand to the right and the left rein brushes their neck they will move to the right.
Bit - the metal piece in the horses mouth. most english riding bits are broken (joint in the middle) and most western ones are solid. there’s a gap behind the horse’s front teeth and that’s where the metal sits. Some horses have smaller mouths than others and do better with solid bits because the ‘broken’ ones will hit the top of their mouth and hurt. There’s also things called ‘shanks’ on some bits which are just longer pieces of metal that attach to the sides of the pieces in their mouth and point downward. This gives the rider more leverage and makes any tug on the reins stronger. (google “Horse bit shank” if this doesn’t make sense)
Saddle - you sit in it. simple right? wrong. There’s two main types of saddles, Western - with the horn like you see in the running gif, and English- the loping gif without the horn. The saddles used in the Witcher look like the pre-english saddle versions but the basic parts you need to know are the same. The part where you ass goes? that’s the seat. the part right in front of your crotch? That’s the pomel. that’s your ‘oh shit handle’ if anything goes screwy (other than the mane). The part that sticks up and keeps your ass in place? That’s the cantle. I like western saddles SO MUCH MORE but i also grew up mainly riding western so im biased. 
Stirrups/Irons - stirrups and irons are where your feet go. In western saddles they’re called stirrups and they’ve got wider decorative leather flaps (called fenders, also originally added to protect trousers/legs from the horse sweat and the buckles of the cinch) and on english saddles they’re called irons because they are usually made of iron and rather slim. Geralt’s irons look pretty similar to modern ones, slim leather straps, minimal iron (or steel or any other strong metal really). Traditional english riders have knee high boots like you see in regency costumes which removes the need for the fenders like on western saddles. 
Cinch/girth - this is what keeps the saddles on. You take a strap and attach it to one side of the saddle, run it under the belly right behind their front legs and attach it to the other side. Its usually made of a strong fabric with wool or some kind of softer lining for western riding. English riding uses a leather one most of the time though this horse girl hates them because they’re harder to cinch up. English saddles use buckles while Western saddles use another leather strap to run through the chinch/girth buckle and you either tie it off or use it like a belt. 
Chest strap - this keeps the saddle from sliding backwards. It’s attached to both sides of the saddle by buckles and between the front legs its attached to the cinch/girth. this is pretty universal but not always used. Geralt uses one though. 
Saddle pad - goes under the saddle to protect the baby’s back and whithers (spot where the neck meets the back and the mane ends)
Tacking up and untacking takes time. This is usually 5-10 minutes when done at a leisure pace and done right.

brush after untacking- helps clear skin of irritants and feels nice

Hay and grains like cracked wheat, oats, barley and the like are commonly found in horse feed. Also a lil drizzle of molasses is chock full of calories and all my horses LOVE the taste.
also while we’re talking food: some horses cant keep all the juice/bits in their mouth when they eat apples (we fondly call it making applesauce) or other treats/veg. Yes it gets all over your hand, yeah its kinda gross, but there’s worse things.
Shoes. Babe's need horse shoes. Especially if they're walking over rocks and roads.
Throwing a shoe (when it comes off on accident) is painful sometimes and if left un-dealt with can affect their joints and spine. Imagine walking around in one heeled shoe and one athletic shoe all day. Ow.
On that note though, on lighter travel seasons it's nice to give their hooves a break from shoes (also cheaper)

If a horse is comfortable/happy/relaxed they will ‘chew’ on nothing. Just kina a little lip smack type deal. My horse’s bottom lip would hang a couple centimeters below his top one when he was relaxed and I would put my chapstick in it while I fussed with other things.
When a horse is uncomfrotable/scared/tense their lips get sealed tight. I call it ‘fish butt lips’ bc they’re watertight and NOTHING is getting in there. 
Stamping hooves can be a few things. Antsy and ready to roll, nervous, deadass scared, or playful/excited. 
A full whinny is communication - saying hi, warning, scared, etc.
the really soft whinny is called a nicker and its my favorite sound okay? that’s little soft communication and its usually reserved for times when they’re comfortable.
When they’re really relaxed they’ll cock one of their back legs kinda how we shift our weight to one hip. 
general fun facts:
Some horses fake limp when they don’t want to work bc they are lazy and smart and realize their person will get off and check them out and maybe even give them a rest. 
You do a preliminary leg injury test by running your hands slowly over their legs and checking for hot spots - inflammation caused by injury is warm
Basic horse saftey is never stand directly in front of the horse if theres a possibility of spooking, if you’re gonna walk behind them walk out of reach of their hooves or right up against that ass. If they cant get a good wind up it wont do as much damage (on that note though I rode/trained horses for 18 years and was only kicked once by a foal). 
It’s kinda common sense not to walk/sidestep between your horses legs and under their belly but we do it all the time bc its a trust thing? adrenaline? its fun?
laying on your horse’s back sans saddle, and facing their butt is so nice okay, that ass is soft and cushy and perfect for a nap. I miss laying on my horses while they ate like this every damn day. 
Horses can sense your moods. Not unlike the whole ‘witchers smelling you’ thing. They can feel a difference in the tension on the reins and in your posture when you’re tense or relaxed.
Some horses will take care of their riders, some are absolute shits and push the limits for funsies. Some horses will only behave for people they’re used to too. Some horses have trauma from being mistreated and will have triggers kinda like people do. We had a horse who would freak the fuck out if anyone walked around with a red had but as soon as you took it off she was the most level headed horse we had.
A good portion of horses (Who aren’t scared of children) will behave better with kiddos or novice riders because they feel they’re nervous.
If they hurt while they’re moving they usually limp but sometimes they’ll buck. It’s their defense mechanism. 
Horses can’t sleep for too long laying down because their body weight will collapse their lungs. Most horses sleep standing up.
They can sit like a dog and it’s hella cute. 
Stung by bees? Most horses will take off at a dead sprint bucking and hopping unless you’ve done a lot of trust work/training with them
They also run and jump and buck and rear to play.
If theres two horses in a pasture together one will chew at the other’s whithers (or anywhere else) to ask them to scratch them the same way. its very cute and they sometimes try this with people.
horses hug. I cry. 
the whole deal with the rider/horse relationship is it’s a mutual trust you’re building. They let you sit on their back and do weird shit and you trust them not to throw you.

Chapter One
People would tell you that the world was made for two, but as Y/n sat in the silence of the old cellar two felt like a long lost dream. It was like wind rolling around you gently, trying to persuade you to move in all directions. It’s an ice cream cone on a boardwalk with the sun above and the salty ocean below. It’s a perfect place no one tries to remember.
Any mind left functioning in the world has evolved to be built for pain. Maybe once upon a time there had been a time and place where love and compassion was something for people to look forward to in life.
This wasn't that world anymore.
To Y/n, that type of world never existed anyways. The world had always been a selfish dark place where love is fleeting and the people are brutal. Once upon a time, true love accidentally affected those who were fortunate. But like every other beautiful thing, they polluted and corrupted it, and like everything else, it got sick.
Y/n’s seen it all. And in the end when it’s taken away the people who protested or cried the loudest, were the one who had taken it for granted the most.
Y/n looked around the cellar, in three days she barely moved. It’s her rule and because of it she can leave easier with the feeling of safety. She always ended a shopping trip with a quiet few nights in a cellar or basement.
Y/n wasn’t born to do this, she had to learn to move around quietly, how to sit still. She knew what she had to do to survive. She had lain amongst the dead, she had run through the dark woods, having to feel her eyesite clear like a wild animal and embrace the darkness.
She crept out into the beam of dust lingering in the stale air, sparkling from the sunlight that found its way down two stories into a dark cellar. The beam of light almost made her smile as she admired the light's determination. Y/n shook her head to bring her thoughts back to the harsh reality as she took her first step towards the stairs.
The explosions never seemed to destroy this home in any way. The stairs were in one piece, which had become a bit of a novelty to her. The old farmhouse was too far from any major centers or roads to have even known of the problems, at least in the beginning. The blood stain smears on the white siding outside proved that sickness has touched every single inch of this world.
The hard wood creaked under the weight of her first step. She held her breath and hoped that the creak went unheard. She slowly took another step up as she let out a shaky breath. On the third step she hesitated, listening for any sort of alarming sounds. Her heart was beating like it was trying to free itself from her constricted chest. She waited a second longer, it was another rule of hers. Never leave when you feel safe, always wait three more seconds.
She put her feet on the far sides of the stairs, where the rusty nails attached the boards to the frame. Shallow breaths make sounds in this new world, in the borderlands anyway. There was no electricity, no cars, no phones, no buzz. The world now sits quiet, as if it was sighing and taking a long inhale after what seemed like forever with mankind and the noise pollution. Y/n was at peace when she was at home, but here in the open world she was one of them. One of what was left of humanity. What scrambles to survive, most of the time seperate from everyone else.
Y/n looked through the cellar door and tried to keep her anxious heartbeat low and her breath quiet. She knew that her body needed to make some noises, but others she could control.
The house was simple. Farmhouses were always the best houses according to Y/n. They always sat a long way off the road, not that roads mattered anymore. They always have canning and pickling that would outlast any human. They always have safety supplies and extras of everything. Farmers lived the longest, just as Y/n’s father said they would.
Two trips a year was rarely enough, but Y/n knew that if she traveled any more than that she would be caught.
She walked through the small kitchen and was amazed at how pristine it still was. Everything was still in its place, just as it was the first time she came to the farmhouse, although now layers of dust had found their way into the home, along with the bits of weeds that grew in through the cracks. With no busy grandmother to buzz around cleaning and dusting the mess, everything shows the house’s years of abandonment. Vines grew up the sides of the house, like all houses. As always, she stood against the doorframe and put her hand at the top of her head as her measurement. She turned and looked at how much higher it is than the mark she foolishly put there last time she came.
She looked away from the mark and pushed away the memories of the happy little girl she used to be. She walked low to the ground toward the backdoor. She couldn’t help but laugh inside at how ridiculous it was that she still felt safer going through the backdoor, even though there was no front or back. There were only doors. They didn’t go anywhere anymore. There was no direction.
Nothing goes anywhere.
Y/n positioned the heavy pack on her back carefully. It contained jars full of heart and soul and survival. To Y/n each jar was like a gentle kiss from the old lady who canned and pickled from her own farm of fresh vegetables. She assumed there are no preservatives, no added colorings, no added salt. There weren’t any labels to contradict anything. For all she knew there was MSG in everything. Y/n found herself smiling at the letters MSG, they meant something to humanity once. That was before.
She fought back memories of nice old ladies and the world before. She had been to many worlds in her life, and being nineteen felt more life sixty most days. She took a deep breath and creaked the door open, as if the wind had opened it. She closed it and opened it again. It felt like the wind coming off the brown dirt field was playing with the door.
Her sharp eyes focused on the dirt yard. Nothing moved, everything was standing still. She knew that she should’ve been waiting for the night to travel, but she had stayed too long this time. She needed to get back. Things only lived so long alone, she knew this well. Her garden had died many times before.
The old barn door swung in the soft breeze, making it creak slightly as the long tan grass swayed and small pebbles scuttled along. Everything moved in sync with the wind. Y/n learned how to spot that.
Y/n pulled the door and cringed, she knew this was always the worst part of the walk home. She hated leaving this house.
She felt her eyes squint shot, as the intense light of the sun nearly blinded her. Her pack felt like tons of bricks on her back, but she took her first steps, desperate for the walk to be over with already. She tried not to jostle her bag too much because she didn’t want to break any jars. She learned the hard way that pickle juice is hard to get out and that backpacks were even harder to find.
Walking across the dirt and gravel driveway to the field was the worst. Y/n looked around, walking with her shotgun in her hand. She usually practiced often with her rifle and silencer at home. But on the road she always brought her shotgun. She saw it as her lucky gun. The thick cold metal made her feel strong, even though she knew what strength was.
To her, strength was not pulling the trigger. At this point in life she has yet to prove her strength to her own self. She always took the cowards path. Just like her dad told her to.
Her boots crunched along the path. She walked softly but some noises were unavoidable. She knew the noise would last until she reached the huge wheat field. Then she would be a whisper in the wind. She entered the field without looking back, when she reached the field she knew the rule.
Her legs groaned under the first steps, but after the first quarter mile she started to warm up and she enjoyed running. Her back was the issue, what with the pack being so much heavier than she had ever trained with. She gripped the shoulder straps tight until her arms couldn’t stand it for another second. Even then, she kept pushing until she reached the forest.
She ran deep intothe woods, always on the same side. Never the same path but always the same destination. The branches whipped past her. The edge of the forest was always the thickest. As the forest clears I see him. He’s smiling like always. He’s calm. He doesn’t run and jump. He waits to confirm that she hadn’t brought anything with her. He’s seen them before. He knew how bad it could be. Together both of them had seen the people get swarmed and taken, usually women.
“Hades.” Y/n whispered out of breath.
Instead of the warm greeting they both want, she quickly turned around and held her shotgun up. She walked backwards as Hades sauntered over to watch the forest. They sat behind a tree and waited and after a few minutes she put the pack down gently and climbed one of the huge trees. The thick branches were very rough against her hands. She sat on a branch and looked through her binoculars from the high viewpoint.
She could see the entire field of brown hay from where she was sitting. Y/n let herself have a weak moment and let herself imagine living in the farmhouse one day and harvesting hay. She felt her eyes strain as she tried to find even a single strand of grass moving in a way that would mean she was followed. She looked at the farmhouse sitting still and alone and hoped it would stay that way until her next trip.
She looked past the farmhouse and watched everything move just as it should. After coming to the conclusion that no one had followed her, she climbed down the tree, eager to lay in her own bed.
When her feet touched the dry ground, she looked at Hades, whose yellow eyes confirmed her thoughts. They were alone. She dropped to her knees and greetedhim as he bounded towards her. The large tundra wolf licked her face and raised his massive paws up to hug her. She would hug him so often when he was baby and one day he hugged back.
He nuzzled at her softly and nipped at her arms. She rubbed his huge soft ears and stood up. She patted him gently on his head.
“Ready?” She asked.
She picked up the heavy pack and adjusted to having it on her back again. The walk home would take an entire day if she could manage to keep a solid pace. Hades started the walk home by heading past the old broken oak tree. Their meeting place.

(captions~) Alright, I’m back from the hockey match, so I have time to finish up this post now!
Megan and Deirdre’s house were the last two I remodeled, since I have to think up a maze plan for Eloise’s house.
Megan just needed some pink and purple flowers, but when I did an interior walk-through (since I did the exterior last time), I realized the lamp in the yellow corner wasn’t yellow, so I had to go back in and fix it... Which still got me two paychecks from Lottie?  I can’t remember if one was less than the other (I only caught the second paycheck amount), but 4,500 dollars for a small fix like that was be insane irl, lol.
Deirdre got wheat and pumpkins outside, and her room stretched, which left an odd space in the middle... but you can see what I did with that below!
