2022 highlights ♡

2022 has been a wild year. Both personally and (especially) on my writing journey. So as a sentimental person, I want to document everything. So here it goes!

Usernames:

In case you don't know, I changed usernames three times this year :D

aeshaven — it's my first username in this account. aeshaven because my pen name is ae. and writing is my haven amidst all the chaos in the world. that's how i coined the aeshaven — or ae’s haven.

solaece — well, solaece is like a self-explanatory. a mixture of solace and ae. the only reason why i changed it because i can't search my username anywhere, esp. on twitter. they thought i'm having a typo. that's why i had to change it.

paerydae — paerydae came from the word faerydae which means gift of the fairies. i instantly got fascinated with the word; and since the faerydae username is already taken, i used paerydae. also, it has my pen name in it which is ae. so i think it's a great pseudonym. and so far, i have no plans of changing it.

Completed Works:

First time kong makatapos ng story. Actually, wala ako gaanong sense of achievement na naramdaman nung natapos ko ‘yung wrong sent kumpara sa chasing moon. Siguro kasi, ‘yung wrong sent, natapos ko na siya dati pa bilang socmed au para sa isang anime ship—nilipat ko lang sa wattpad at pinalitan ng pangalan. So parang wala ako gano’ng na-feel nung natapos ko kasi nga, matagal na siyang tapos. Pero sa chasing moon, ito ang unang beses na nakatapos ako ng isang nobela. Sa ilang taon kong sinubukang magsulat (mula 2014), ngayon lang ako nakatapos. Sa totoo lang, hanggang ngayon, parang ‘di ako makapaniwala na nakatapos ako? Kasi parang ang imposible. Parang hindi ako ‘yung tumapos.

Sa totoo lang din, hindi ko gano’n kagusto ang chasing moon. Sans bias, if I were only a reader, ni hindi ko bibigyan ang chasing moon ng 5 star. Ang dami kong gustong baguhin. Ang dami kong gustong palitan. Ang dami kong gustong tanggalin. Pakiramdam ko hindi deserve ng mga mámbabasá ang bará-baráng akda. Pero kasi... tingin ko rin, the imperfectness of chasing moon is what makes chasing moon a good novel. It showed my raw emotions, my amateur self, my desparate self. It showed everything.

Also... chasing moon was the one who fulfilled my young heart’s dream — the dream to write and finish a novel. So no matter how shitty my writing is, I'm proud of myself for being able to write it, for being able to complete it.

Unpublished Works:

Dalawa ang story na in-unpublish ko ngayong taon. Well... hindi naman na bago sakin ang mag-unpublish. Literal. Mula 2014, wala na akong ibang ginawa sa mga sinusulat ko kundi ang i-unpublish sila dahil sa tatlong rason: a) hindi ko natatapos. b) tinatamad ako. c) lost of motivation.

Sa dalawang ito naman (JV and DT), wala sa tatlo ang dahilan kung bakit ko sila in-unpublish.

Sa JV, tingin ko kasi hindi ko narerelay ng tama ‘yung feelings at characteristics ng mga characters ko. Nahihirapan ako kaya tinanggal ko muna. I don't know kung ibabalik ko pa, pero kung oo, sana I'm a better writer that time na. Because my bb Erudite deserves it.

Sa DT naman, tingin ko kasi hindi pa ako gano'n kagaling din to write a speculative fiction. Ta's ang hirap pa kasi nasa epistolary format hahahaha pero ito, unlike JV, sigurado akong ibabalik ko ‘to. Kailan? Ewan hahaha!

Ongoing Works:

I currently have four ongoing works and they are:

Act and Make Up — Act and Make Up or AAMU was first written (and completed) as a socmed au for an anime ship (like wrong sent). I just decided to change it and put it on wattpad and make it as my work with new names. I was updating it consistently before; until I decided to focus on writing chasing moon. I'm planning to complete it in the first quarter of 2023.

Blinding Star — Blinding Star is the second installment of Heart Wishes Series. HWS is a new adult series.

Pag-uuláyaw — Pag-uuláyaw is the first installment of Claveria High Series. The series is meant to be light hearted and is set in a typical filipino high school setting.

Vote Wisely — The prompt of Vote Wisely was meant for a different anime ship but I wasn't able to continue it. So I decided to put it on my wattpad. Vote Wisely was also meant to be my Christmas gift and was supposed to be posted completely. However, I had to deal with my personal responsibilities so I just decided to post the first 25 parts of it.

nagkakape — they added chasing moon on their reading list named what i'd give to read for the first time again. that reading list name just gave me a confidence boost.

9remlin — i remember looking at my phone because it kept on vibrating and i was shocked when someone was flooding my notifs. i enjoyed reading their comments. like astalure, idk if they were able to finish chasing moon because they didn't appear on my notifs again but i'm thankful to them.

lovina_blues — one of my first ever supporter. they were one of the first reader who supporter me through their votes and (sometimes) comments.

moncherieave — they were my reader during my socmed au writer days and even though i stopped writing for that certain ship, they still supported me with my work and original characters.

I listed my readers’ usernames so that I won't forget who were there during my first year. Also, to show them how much I appreciated their existence. I hope they'll know that I'm very grateful for their support :]

What's next for 2023?

For 2023, I wish and hope to complete Blinding Star, Pag-uuláyaw, Act and Make Up, and Vote Wisely. ‘Yung Vote Wisely, Act and Make Up, at Pag-uuláyaw sigurado akong matatapos ko siya next year (if my plans go accordingly :D) so ang problema ko na lang talaga ay Blinding Star. Pero sana matapos ko rin para makaumpisa na ako kay Apollo at sa Paninibughô :D Wish me luck!

I have attached a link to his wiki here. Because there is a lot. Basically he is the only son of Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade. Nephew to Leia and Han Solo and cousin to Anakin, Jacen, Jaina and Ben Solo. He is a Jedi Knight.

In Washington:

He is unaware. He thinks he has been here all his life and he believes that he is Jabba's son. Despite his father's profession, Ben still went to engineering school in his fake memories but will help his father every now and then in secret. But he does not keep who is father is a secret. He thinks he's weird for his weird abilities so he keeps them secret and his lightsaber he has kept hidden in a box which he has sort of forgotten about due to his memories. Ben is still quite kind and gentle despite who his father is in Washington but has a meaner streak to him as needed.

Possible Plots:

Fake friends from college - he obvs didn't go to school in washington but they could be people he thought he went to school with. Friends in general - Ben is a nice person. He has a mean streak but more so he just keeps his distance at the moment. With his father best not get too close to people. Enemies - with his father it's likely to pick up enemies. Roommate - he's antisocial so ideally someone who doesn't expect him to socialize. training partner - he wants to keep up his fighting and fitness. Bodyguard - someone hired by Jabba to keep an eye on Ben (he often figures out how to evade them and vanish for a bit.) FwB/ Hookups / Exes - He struggles to keep a relationship, he's just not himself but he could have picked up some hookups or FwBs and exes. slow burn ship - really slow burn (heterosexual)

gonna put this under a cut for being salty but uhhhhh tldr I hate the "updated" graphics.

So like this might be a me issue but my main problem with it is that I'm on a solidly midrange pc, and I still only get between 25-39 fps. Less in some cutscenes, dungeons, and areas where there's a lot of particle effects happening. A big part of the reason the game is so stylised and simplified is that, at least back in ARR and HW, YoshiP wanted to ensure that even people without superpower PCs and current-gen consoles could play it comfortably. He didn't want anyone to be like "priced out" of being able to play just because they couldn't afford some nasa supercomputer. This was a big problem 1.0 had and he didn't want ARR to have the same issue. My big worry is that people like me on midrange PCs that just about handle the game, and also people on ps4s (the ps4 has been Struggling a bit with recent expansions, particularly in trials) are going to find that the game suddenly runs like dogshit and we can no longer play without a significant investment. I don't understand why the devs' priorities have suddenly shifted on this.

Also, like. On a personal note. I just think it looks bad. I think it looks bad and it's going to age worse than the original graphics have done. The closer a game gets to realism, the worse it ages, we've seen it time and time again. The old textures are low-res, but if they'd just been upscaled they'd have been perfectly fine. They're stylised, but that stylisation is part of the game's charm and it's part of why it's aged so well in the first place - it's not trying to be realistic.

yeah let's take the rabbit noses away from the rabbit people. let's make them even more "humans with rabbit ears". Why not. Why aren't you cheering for us, we made the noses worse! Didn't you want worse noses! Didn't you want them shaded in a way that looks considerably more like an instagram nosejob? What do you mean you liked the wider, softer look offered by the old textures, what do you mean you thought it was cute that the rabbit people had little lighter patches of skin that made their noses look like little bunny noses.

I'm glad everyone else is excited I guess but I feel like I'm in mourning for the original look of the game. I've played this game for ten years and it seems like once 7.0 drops I'll just never be able to play the game as I remember and love it again, it will be forever changed. I'm glad darker skintones look like they'll reflect light more naturally, but I think the more semirealistic shading style used on these new textures looks uncanny as fuck.

I don't know if I'll be playing after 7.0 tbh. I don't even know if I'm gonna make the system requirements.

p < 0.05 is pathetic. i can't believe thats the statistical norm for confidence in science. 5% chance of something being a fluke is small if you have 100 people on earth but that's fucking absurd for the populations we deal with now. 1 in 20? there's a 1 in 20 chance we're wrong about $thing in a study that effects how we treat/legislate for millions of people? christ it should be 1 in 1000 at fucking minimum for statistical significance beyond the very preliminary stages. you can do p < 0.05 if you're looking for something to test, but to publish a paper looking at populations the size we do in social and behavioral science with a 1 in 20 chance of being wrong?? just by chance! no wonder there's a replicability crisis! 1 in 20 is if your sample is immaculate and unbiased LMAO, with the awful shit in psych fields and the bias against negative findings. no shit. 0.05. my asshole you fucking hacks if there's a 0.05 chance the sky falls tomorrow nasa would put out a psa to shit yourself bc we're going to die. 0.05. you know what at that point just call it a best guess

The last Steve expected when he came home at ten at night was to still find their high schooler son and Peggy still up despite the late hour. He couldn’t help the frown on his lips as he sat his bag by the door and hung his coat up. From his position, he could see straight into the kitchen how the mother and son mirrored one another in their frustrated looks.

Peggy’s brow furrowed and Chester’s lips were pursed. Their brows were pinched in both concern and frustration and he could see the growing number of crumpled up balls of paper around them. Chester’s laptop was opened to some math calculator and formula page. Peggy was muttering about ‘not rocket science’ and how ‘that was easy’ and this wasn’t.

“Doesn’t Chester have band practice in the morning?” Steve asked, letting his presence be known as he walked noisily towards them. Even still, his question caused them both to jump from where they were too buried in their work. “Son, don’t you gotta be up at 5?”

“Not anymore,” Chester sighed, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose and rubbing at his face. “Mr. Phillips’ wife had their baby last night. He texted all of us to let us know and said the practice is canceled. The football game is put on hold till next week cause of it. The bandmates and I are getting together after school tomorrow to go see ‘em.”

Steve’s lips twitched into a small smile, a reminder of how selfless his son was. While Chester took after him in heights and looks with his small frame and need of glasses, it was nothing towards his stubborn attitude like his mother and how he will get stuff done. He might’ve been bullied once in school for his frame and how he was a ‘nerd’ being into comics and band but he shut that down and the bully mysteriously had to have his head pulled out of a tuba.

Peggy still gives him shit for laughing at the photo.

“Oh, she’s precious,” he breathed, looking at the photo Chester was showing him of the infant baby girl. “You two need some help?”

“Unless you can figure out geometry….” Chester’s shoulders shrugged and he yawned. “We’ve been at it since before dinner. Mum had to order take out.”

“Thai in the fridge,” Peggy muttered, not even looking up as Steve heated the food up. “I don’t get it. We’re following the formula. How is it saying we’re wrong?”

“I think you two need a break. You’ve been at it for hours, it’s ten-thirty. Chest needs sleep, Pegs. We’ll email your teacher in the morning, tell her how not even your parents can understand it.” He kissed Chester’s head and took his vacant spot when the kid stumbled off to finally get some sleep.

As he shoved curry into his mouth, Steve picked up the piece of paper they were working on. All he saw were numbers, shapes, and formulas written in the chicken scratch Chester called handwriting. Christ, he was an architect you’d think he’d get this.

Hell, you’d think his NASA-worker wife would get this too!

“What the hell are they teaching kids these days?” Peggy huffed, giving up. She stalked over to the alcohol cabinet and poured her and Steve a stiff whiskey, passing him the drink. “That’s not like how we grew up learning. Remember us teaching Chest division?”

“Fuck, don’t remind me,” Steve groaned. “It was right. The answers were right, but that woman marked them all wrong because we were ‘teaching him the wrong way and plaguing his mind.’ I’m still pissed about that and that was years ago. Remember reading? And cursive?”

It was Peggy’s turn to roll her eyes as she threw back the rest of her drink, sitting beside Steve. “I remember. That bastard called us to tell us we were making the other kids feel bad because Chester could read at an advanced level. Or how that counselor tried to guilt us into making Chester skip a grade or two.”

“His grades were outstanding and he loved his friends, I wasn’t about to make him skip several grades to make them or us look better. He wasn’t that bored in class and when he was, he knew just to read a book and his teachers let him.” Steve’s head shook, pushing the empty container out of the way as he picked up the paper again to review it.

“I think I’m ready to call it,” Steve continued, setting the paper down and closing his kids’ laptop. “We’re old.”

“You’re old,” Peggy grumbled, draping her arms around Steve’s neck to kiss him before starting to clean the kitchen. “We better catch up fast, Steve because sooner or later we’re going to have baby number two and Chest will be in college.”

What first got me interested in this course:

I received an email about the course. I like reading about future technology, so I figured this course would be interesting. After seeing the topics that will be covered, I’m excited discuss some of the topics. I really like space technology/travel research.

This article talks about Nasa’s research into using water as a possible future fuel for propulsion. In the article they state what they want from the research saying “ The need is for many reasons: to reach a destination, maintain orbit, maneuver around other objects in space, or hasten de-orbit, helping spacecraft at end-of-life, to be good stewards of an increasingly cluttered space environment.” In the article they discuss how they wanted a safer fuel source. The propulsion system turns water into its base elements, hydrogen and oxygen. The spacecraft is then able to burn both of these gases as fuel. It was determined that this could be a safer form of fuel that would cost less to use. The reason for the reduction in cost was due to other forms of fuel needing additional safety measures installed. I think people should check out this article because it talks about the idea of using something as plentiful as water to fuel future spacecraft. Innovations like this always lead to new discoveries, and I find that very fascinating.

This article talks about the future of AI in the healthcare sector. It gave a few examples of applications in healthcare where AI can be useful. The examples were:

1. Virtual assistants - help patients with their daily activities. (Alzheimer’s patients for example) This could be used for help with scheduling among other things.

2. MelaFind - using infrared light to analyze moles or lesions for possible skin cancers. This example in the article talked about how it was not meant for replacing biopsy, but was primarily to assist in early identification of issues.

3. Robotic assisted therapy - The use of a robotic arm to help during physical therapy. This arm would help patients who had a stroke to regain some of their motion. It was noted that, “ it can help patients perform more recorded movements per hour than they would have if working with a physical therapist alone.“

4. Caption Guidance - software geared towards helping medical professionals to diagnose heart disease. 

I think this article should be looked into by people that find technological innovations in the medical field fascinating. I originally went to school to be a nurse, so I find medical innovations very interesting.

This article goes over how VR will advance going into the future. The article talks about 4 main segments of everyday life that VR will affect. The first example was on education and training. This example went over how some companies are developing VR for remote learning. My favorite part of this example was the discussion on using VR to train medical students. They discussed how VR was being used to train medical students in some procedures. The article mentions, “medical students trained using VR were able to carry out certain procedures quicker and more accurately than peers trained using traditional methods.” I found that very fascinating. The next example of VR in daily life was the use of VR at work. The article went over how a communications company called Ericsson used Oculus headsets for business meetings. The last two examples that the article gives I will lump together since they are essentially talking about the same thing. The article talks about the future use of VR in gaming and socializing. VR has given rise to new kinds of environments for total strangers to come together and chat. I really enjoyed reading this article as I currently have a VR headset and have found it to be quite an interesting piece of equipment. I think people interested in the possibilities of VR would enjoy reading this article.

7. What was your first word as a child (that wasn’t a variation of “Mom” or “Dad”)?

Tragically, my memory isn’t that good and according to my mom, Mama and Dada were the first (in that order)and that she didn’t remember the first non-parent name word but that I “caught on pretty quickly though” and that if it was something significant or common, it likely involved Bush (HW) and/or Desert Storm (which I almost typed as Desert Strom, and how I wish we had sent the Senator from South Carolina to the desert permanently and a long time ago) My niece’s first word was Shit, apparently - which makes sense, considering how much time she spends around my dad.

Irish Coffee - various parts bitter, sweet, sharp, and sometimes surprisingly boozy. Not to everyone’s tastes but also somehow fairly common.

22. What was your “phase” when you were younger? (i.e., Mythology Nerd, Horse Girl, Space Geek, etc)

Oh, I had more phases than the fucking moon. I was definitely a myth bitch (any and all kinds but especially greek and roman - I remember that I would be reading my book of greek myths during church services when I was much younger.) but I also did the whole Space Case phase as well - I used to want to work for NASA (I still do, but in the public affairs and policy side). I had the angry pseudo-emo phase (atheist/agnostic and angrily and moodily talking to parents) and the whole Innocent Devout Altar Server phase.

To more seriously answer the question, they’re okay. I don’t do jigsaw puzzles hardly ever anymore, but I do word puzzles and so forth.
