How Do I Love Thee?
-Wilfred Owen (1893-1918)
I cannot woo thee as the lion his mate,
With proud parade and fierce prestige of presence;
Nor thy fleet fancy may I captivate
With pastoral attitudes in flowery pleasance;
Nor will I kneeling court thee with sedate
And comfortable plans of husbandhood;
Nor file before thee as a candidate….
I cannot woo thee as a lover would.
~
To wrest thy hand from rivals, iron-gloved,
Or cheat them by a craft, I am not clever.
But I do love thee even as Shakespeare loved,
Most gently wild, and desperately for ever,
Full-hearted, grave, and manfully in vain,
With thought, high pain, and ever vaster pain.

The amount of cis men I see using and abusing my dream of all dreams - husbandhood and fatherhood. Cheating on their wives, ignoring their children, not sharing in the mundane manual labor of life to better help and lift each other up. The barest minimum of even supporting their wife. Do fucking better.

Oysters
Champagne and oysters.
 A holiday in Paris.
Only the best to mark a year of husbandhood.
Five since the end of the war. The second one.
Ten since an embrace of long lost brothers in a shack haunted by memories.
A lifetime and not enough time.
An extravagance, Remus said.
Necessary, Sirius countered and ordered another round.

I know many things, Luger. I know about your son, I know about his failure at husbandhood, I know of a daughter consumed by hatred but still looking for a path to call her own. I also know about hope. About a runaway wife, and a grandson you never knew.
Luger squinted, stepping backwards, still unable to pinpoint the tone of this mysterious stranger. He wasn't sure whether to arm himself, but he certainly felt it imperative to stay within distance of a weapon. He thought for a moment of Kragok; he didn't know, initially, that the boy's life had been lost - but in time, as he lurked in the depths of the facility, he'd picked up on it. He also thought of Lien-Da, of how he'd failed her, how he'd failed all three of his children. He tilted his head, mulling over these words.
"Tell me. Tell me of my son." He felt almost as if he didn't deserve to ask such a thing; after all, he had failed him in life. He had been so caught up in living up to his fathers' strict expectations, that he had failed in his own fatherhood. "Of my grandson." He spoke dryly, his eyes losing their subtle shine. He wondered if this stranger was some form of divine punishment, tearing open those scars which he had numbed himself to.

Fatherhood, husbandhood, human beinghood.
Juggling everything all at once is a daily achievement.
I used to be some badass punk that didn't give a shit about even myself.
Now I care more than I hate to admit about everything.
I learned a lot since the years I started using this site but I wanted to come back and write these things out in case someone might care to read any of it.
Know there is plenty of love in this world and that you can be loved if you reciprocate those feelings back with the world.
This place can be cruel.. Be strong and be brave.. I'm rooting for you all.

Ansgar surely is a man rough around the edges and while he has lived a life void of romance, sometimes he thinks he craves it. He is not craven in his conviction of wanting husbandhood, fatherhood, but he hardly thinks any woman would think he suited enough. Ans is cold, stark in speech, reserved in his emotions, at least, in expressing them          but he is terribly loyal. Loyal to his Faith. Loyal to his Jarl. Begetting loyalty to a wife, a family hardly seemed a challenge.

lights of his life
pairings: ran haitani, rindou haitani, hanma shuji, sanzu haruchiyo, draken x fem!reader
genre/wc: fluff, oh it's so toothrotting (0.5k)
summary: in which he sits and calls back the moment he was proud of his little one, and his title as their father.
a/n: been dying to write father/husband!tokrev so here's my take having a family with these scary men. all timeskip btw. not gonna fucking lie i cried writing draken's.
Tumblr media
he remembers the way fatherhood hit him like a truck; a pleasant hit. is that even possible? he ponders, nontheless he thought so. he was just getting adjusted to the ins and outs of husbandhood, until you ecstatically told him you were pregnant with your's and his first child. now, with a little bundle of joy at the mere age of childhood—and some time to relax for once—he sits and reflects on a moment of his life as a father that he held dear to his heart.
RAN remembers the first time his daughter smiled up at him. a smile that shined so brightly despite it being one of her firsts. and the sweet babble that left her giggly self was like nothing he’d ever heard; who knew a sound could make a man feel so fulfilled? she knew, his daughter knew that he, a man who was feared and envied through the undergrounds of japan— was her father. "that's right sweet one, i'm your papa. i promise to love you forever, my little girl."
RINDOU remembers the first time you and him allowed for the little one to sleep on the bed between you two. until now, your son had been sleeping on a separate crib next to your shared bed, and rindou silently longed to have him next to you guys as the night draped its dreamy blanket over the three of you. therefore when the night finally came— rindou stayed up late to admire the pure, unconcentrated looks of sleep on his two loved one's faces. he fell asleep that night with a smile of contentment on his face.
HANMA remembers the first day his son went to school. from picking warm clothes the night before, then hastily throwing the lunch you made him into the his paw patrol backpack, to driving him to the front gates, and then carrying him on his hip into the school— hanma recalls it all. he remembers the large smile his little boy gave him as he waddled in line and into the school doors, blowing a sweet kiss to his father before he disappeared in the crowd. that day, hanma promised himself that he would give it his all for his child to gain the education and success he deserved.
SANZU remembers the still evening where he had been skimming through bills at the dinner table, eyes furrowing at the impalpable amounts. however, something from the corner of his eye caught his attention—his daugther was pulling herself up and had taken a few steps on her own. sanzu who wore a bright grin, and while in complete awe and shock, had facetimed you instantly to share the special moment. "that's our little girl, she's a winner already!"
DRAKEN remembers the first time he held his baby boy in his very arms. his newborn son, a human embodiment of the endless love he carried for you— and now him. draken lets out a breathless laugh at the sight of his baby wrapping his tiny fingers around draken's finger. in a loose grip that barely felt like much, draken blinked back tears as the baby cooed in his hold. "you've been giving mommy a tough time with those kicks of yours huh? it's nice to finally meet you, fighter."

HNNNNNG HOW LONG DO FOFA KLANCE DATE BEFORE THEY GET MARRIED IDK WHICH IS BETTER A SHORT BOYFRIENDHOOD BEFORE HUSBANDHOOD OR A LONG BOYFRIENDHOOD BEFORE HUSBANDHOOD BOTH ARE SOOO GOOD I HAVE BEEN GOING BACK AND FORTH ALL DAY SINCE I SAW THAT MARRIED KLANCE ART YOU POSTED!!!!
THEY DATE FOR A LONG TIME I THINK!!!!! they probably talk abt marriage six months in or so but they decide they are in no rush. i bet they date for like 3 years before lance pops the question. cant decide if its
a) when they are at home and the notion hits him as keith is doing something like fixing a kitchen cabinet door or making pizza,
b) when they are out on a vacation/layover and lance has a cute little plan to charm keith before asking or
c) when they are all cuddled up in bed and keiths arms are so secure around him that lance whispers it into his throat.

While we're on the subject of redemption arcs, what were your thoughts on the ones in Oathbringer? I wasn't on Tumblr yet, so I think I missed your hot takes, and I'm really curious!
Ohhhhh man okay I love Oathbringer so much but also it's been like 2 years since I read it in full so I do NOT have a fresh memory of it, so this'll be a little vague maybe.
In terms redemption arcs....this book kind of kills it? Like. Okay I dont wanna shit on Zuko but everyone always brings Zuko up as the 'ideal redemption arc' and I'm not saying it was bad because it wasn't it was well done, but I've also seen people saying that the reason Zuko's redemption arc works is because he wasn't totally evil, and because he didnt commit super horrific crimes so he was on the redeemable side of some arbitrary line we've drawn. Like a requirement for a redemption arc is being on the correct side of that line otherwise there should be no stories that investigate how or if a person can be redeemed and what that would look like.
Anyway. I think thats kinda bullshit. I love Zuko and I love his arc but also....its like lukewarm in terms of where we can go with a redemption arc because Zuko is never the real villain, he's never just clearly evil, he does bad things and hurts the mcs but he's conflicted and regretful and showing signs of wanting to change and always a secondary bad guy to someone else.
And those things might make his arc more palatable and easy to draw on as an example of an effective redemption arc to some people, but also they allow you to skirt around a lot of the most interesting questions that can arise in this sort of arc. Like. I dont wanna say that it's boring but. It's sad to me that it's most people's go to (maybe only??? The things some people reference as being redemption arcs actually drive me up a wall) example of a well done redemption arc bc the questions you can pose about this are limited when the set up is a generally soft hearted boy from a messed up family is trying SO HARD to please his dad by being evil but also his really chill uncle is there to mitigate his worst ideas the whole time and hes super inefficient at being bad because he's 16.
IN CONTRAST. Oathbringer takes a character we thought we knew as good and turns him on his head. It gives us a past Dalinar and shows him as chaotic, uncontrollable, angry, warmongering, the extent of his bloodthirst contrasted against and shown to be greater that of characters we currently hate in the present day series. It shows us his anger and his violence and his lack of care for anyone and his failure at fatherhood and husbandhood and then his absolute darkest moment in which he unflinchingly directs the massacre of an entire city in a fit of rage.
And then it turns and it asks not only Dalinar himself, and the other characters, but also--by virtue of this being the third book, after we've already known current, measured, thoughtful Dalinar for 2 books--asks us if we can accept him as being redeemed. It presents us with a character who has done things that are so horrendous he would make for a terrifying and effective villain in basically any setting you put him in, and has him screw up massively, break down, spiral, hate himself, be mentally magically altered so that he can live with himself and try to become better rather than collapsing in on himself and becoming an utterly nonfunctional person, and then takes that protection away and asks him who are you now?
Who are you after everything terrible you've done and everything you've tried to make yourself into following that and can you be a person again? Will you crumple in on yourself or will you blame your failures on magic because that's the easy thing to do or will you ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE THINGS YOU HAVE DONE AND MOVE FORWARDS? And does doing so make a person redeemed? Or are there things so terrible that nothing you do can ever make it right? Even if you believe that to be the case, is it worth it to try anyway? And how do the answers Dalinar finds to these questions and the answers we find to these questions impact how we as readers view Dalinar compared to how we thought of him for the first two books?
There are tons of other things I could yell about for hours wrt OB including how Moash is an extremely effective foil for not only for Kaladin but also for Dalinar to an extent because his arc is a spiralling character degradation into NOT taking responsibility, and what happens when you have an outside force influencing some of your actions (like Dalinar's being influenced by the thrill, Moash's experiences of discrimination ARE a factor in his actions) and you push ALL the responsibility from ALL your actions onto that force and how that can hinder both your ability to redeem yourself AND to move forward and progress positively as a person.
And I'm also very capable of yelling for hours abt non-redemption arc related aspects of OB BUT. This book is a brick and my thoughts on it are probably that times 10 and I do want to sleep tonight and I have no real conclusion other than that this is a really frickin good book that has the guts to explore a lot of extremely difficult and complex topics and it's great.
