Brown University students are launching an indefinite hunger strike for Palestine
they are asking for their university to divest from companies profiting from the genocide in gaza and openly call for a ceasefire and will not eat until the university governing bodies hears and considers a divestment resolution. if you are not familiar with the physical toll a hunger strike takes on the body, it might be worth looking up to get a better sense of what a significant action these students are taking. the university's highest governing body is having their first meeting of 2024 on february 8-9th so let's rally around them to muster even more pressure on brown university.
brown university contact page: let's state our support for these students and let brown university know the world will be watching what happens next!

Non-binary Montrealer Alexe Frederic Migneault entered day six of a hunger strike on Saturday as part of a bid to pressure Quebec’s public health insurance board to add a third gender option to its health cards. “It’s getting a little hard in the morning, especially,” Migneault, whose pronouns are they/them, said in a phone interview. “That’s the time when I have the least sugar in my blood and the least hydration, as well. So it’s always difficult.” Migneault says they’ve only ingested liquids — water, vegetable broth, sports drinks and the occasional hot chocolate — since they began their strike on Monday.

On Saturday the 14th of October 2023, at a rally for Palestine in Dundee, Scotland, 3rd year student Tánaiste had a speech read out in his absence. In his speech he called out the University of Dundee for refusing to release a statement condemning ethnic cleansing and war crimes against Palestinians, contrasting this with his university's speedy condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In this speech he declared that, if the university has not released an appropriate statement by Friday the 20th of October, then beginning on Monday 23rd Tánaiste fully intends to start a hunger strike. His stated aim is to organise the students and staff at the uni into a campaign that will cause the faculty leadership to reconsider whether silence in the face of genocide is truly in the best interests of the institution. Updates are likely to be shared on Tánaiste's instagram, which can be found here, and on the Dundee University Socialist Society's facebook page, which can be found here.
The full text of his speech is as follows:
I am in England and am unable to be here. Thank you to my comrades for reading this out for me.
My name is TAW-nish-ta (Tánaiste) I'm a 3rd year Community Education student at the University of Dundee. I remember when Russia invaded Ukraine on Saturday 20th February 2022, by Thursday my university and student union had put out a statement: "It is our sincere hope that, even at this stage, a more peaceful solution can be found to the current conflict that avoids bloodshed and tragedy."
A fortnight later, they put out a further statement outlining: "the University’s unequivocal condemnation of the invasion... We must continue to hope that international pressure on Russia will have a positive effect, however bleak the situation may look today."
No public statement has come this time, as we face the real prospect of a genocide, aided and abetted by our own government and so called Leader of the Opposition. I directly asked the Principal why we have put out no statement. This was the University’s response: "The current situation is tragic with a shocking level of unjustifiable violence against innocent people. But it is also very complex and there will be many different perspectives on it. For that reason the University will not be taking a public stance on the matter."
I have no words for this act of moral cowardice. No words. What is complex about ethnic cleansing? What is complex about collective punishment? Which syllable of genocide do they need repeating? I saw a tweet which summed it up so well: "Universities be like 'We support genocide and apartheid. Please seek mental health support.'"
The leadership of my university are making the judgment that it is not in their institutional interest to even condemn genocide. Perhaps they are right. Perhaps the balance of power and PR is that actually to remain silent is in Dundee University’s best interest.
Our task as students is to change their calculation by all means available to us. There are many methods available. We have a student council and student union. They can be used. We can organise mass letters. And other tactics exist.
Our cause is moral, is just, and is seen to be so by the majority of students and staff at my university. They are waiting to be stirred at action, to be mobilised, to be quickened. I would like to announce my contribution to this campaign.
If the university has not issued an appropriate statement by Friday 20th October, I shall not eat food until the University publicly denounces the war and calls for an immediate ceasefire. I do not pretend this will end the war, but as my Principal said, "We must continue to hope that international pressure" will work.
One thing we have learnt so brutally in the comparison of how Ukraine and Palestine have been treated is that Black Lives Don't Matter. The imminent extermination of 2 million Gazans does not provoke our governments let alone our universities, to offer even token support for universal human rights. In the circumstances, a hunger strike for an achievable victory is the least I can do.
I know the University cares about its public image. I gently suggest to them that "Dundee student dies on hunger strike because University won't denounce genocide" will be bad PR. Their open day on 28th October will be marred by day 6 of a hunger strike for all prospective students to see.
I hope that my University looks at the prospect of a white British student starving to death and extends its compassion to the millions in Palestine who, for only the crime of existing, are being hourly killed.

On February 19th 2024, a group of students at the McGill University began a hunger strike demanding the university's divestment and academic boycott of genocide and apartheid in Palestine. Amine (one of the strikers) was hospitalized as doctors told them that they were reaching dangerous levels of starvation during their hunger strike. As of right now, "Chadi" is the last remaining student involved in this hunger strike, living off of water, broth, and electrolytes. @/mcgillhungerstrike regularly posts updates on Instagram.
Separately, on March 18th 2024 at the University of South Florida, 18 unaffiliated students began to hunger strike as well, demanding that the president of USF call for a ceasefire, the open publication of investment portfolios of USF from 2013-2023, establish a student investment oversight committee, and for USF to immediately divest from all companies supporting Israel's ongoing genocide in Palestine. Several of the strikers have been hospitalized so far. @/usfhungerstrike regularly posts updates on Instagram.

Prompt #3265
"You must be hungry," the hero coaxed. "Starving, even. You should eat something. Anything. Make a request and I'll bring it to you."
"Freedom," the villain snapped, and rolled away, facing the blank wall of their tiny concrete cell. "I'll take fresh air as a substitute."

TO ANYONE WHO IS ABLE!!!
JOIN ME ON MY HUNGER STRIKE FOR GAZA WHICH STARTS TODAY!!
I have been a total coward for only keeping my activism online. Today, I have decided to strike for Gaza in my own way by only eating from the food of my own home, and even when I do eat it is only the minimum needed to keep me going.
If your health allows you to follow along with me, please do! We all need to stop being cowards!

Kevin Keith's 27 day hunger strike and the censorship around it
(most post body text copy-pasted from Death Penalty Action news email)
From prison, Kevin planned to manage a publicity campaign to call attention to his hunger strike and his demand for a just resolution to his case, however... the day he started his hunger strike, he was moved to solitary confinement. A prison executive came to see him...
First she demanded that he hand over all of his documents, his paper, stamps, envelopes and his pen. Then she informed him of a policy change: Prisoners on a hunger strike are not allowed to communicate with the outside world.
Kevin had told his lawyers and some members of the media of his plans, but that was it. I certainly had no details, and Kevin's brother Charles also had no details. Worse, there was no way to contact or even visit Kevin, because he was in the hole (solitary confinement).
Kevin held out for 27 days.
His lawyers came to check on him once a week to make sure he was OK, but that's it.  No media responded to his plea. No celebrity supporters tweeted about his plight. We at Death Penalty Action had no information, and could therefore do nothing.
Even as Kevin drank copious amounts of water, he still was dehydrated. Kevin received intravenous hydration ten times, on the following dates:
February 7
February 12
February 14
Twice on February 16
Twice on February 18
Twice on February 22
And we had no idea.
Kevin says he found a spiritual benefit to the experience, but he stopped when the prison doctor warned him that he risked damaging his kidneys. They threatened him with being transferred to the hospital, restrained, and force-fed. At that point, he decided to end his hunger strike.
Kevin Keith is still waiting for Governor DeWine to act on his request for executive clemency. As you may recall, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against him back in November. It is unclear what additional legal avenues he has available to him.
to support kevin keith, you can sign his petition, send him money so that he can buy food to help as he recovers from his hunger strike, and watch his brother charles keith's 6 minute video on his experiences fighting the death penalty.

After 12 days on hunger strike, Alexe Frédéric Migneault feels they have won a round in their battle against Quebec's health insurance board (RAMQ) and is ending their fast. Although their wish for health insurance cards to have a third gender option ("X") has not been granted, Migneault, who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, feels they have advanced the cause. "Great strides have been made," wrote Alexe Frédéric Migneault on their Facebook page early Friday evening. "The organizations that represent me and I were able to meet high-level people. I don't think it was all in vain. We managed to draw their attention to the unreasonable delays that people like me have to endure, which is already an achievement."

Our hunger strike is over but we won’t stop pressuring Brown University to end its complicity with genocide
Israel’s genocide in Gaza is the defining political moment of our generation. We recently ended a week-long hunger strike against Brown University's complicity, but we are not letting up the pressure.

It is day five and I have completed my hunger strike. Tomorrow I go back to regularly timed meals.
I only experienced a very small percentage of what the starving people in Palestine have to suffer through, and even that was almost unbearable. I almost cracked a few days.
Please, if you have the funds I heavily encourage you to donate to relief efforts. If you don’t have the funds to support financially, go to arab.org and use your daily click to generate funds for Palestine! You can also spread awareness by sharing any and all posts about the Palestinian Genocide on any website!
