Hubert I love your new weapon that you got in Askr.
Tumblr media
As do I. Rather aptly named and perfectly tailored to send our enemies on their way—whether they want to or not, heh. The tome certainly makes the most of my sinister capabilities. Between its hindrance upon those who would oppose our cause and the fright it instills once it is cast, I imagine we'll have these terrible business sorted out in short order.

For book ask game, no. 13, 14, 18, 25, 26. Thx :D
Ooh thanks for sending me more book asks!
13. Name a book with a really bad movie/tv adaptation:
Watchmen (2009) by Zack Snyder was a pretty mediocre adaptation of the graphic novel by Alan Moore, from what I remember of both of them (haven't revisited either of them in a long time, but distinctly remember having this opinion back when I first read it... like oh ok, so THIS is what it's actually supposed to be like).
I feel like as a director Zack Snyder is very good at creating epic movie trailer moments or music videos with stylish visuals (this trailer for it looked pretty exciting to me at the time it was new):
youtube
BUT then once you go to the theater and try to sit through one of his movies they usually just end up being just the most soulless drawn-out superficial and boring stuff, like watching a 3 hour long commercial. From what I remember a lot of the creative and innovative storytelling and the depth in the original Watchmen comic comes entirely from how it is presented to the reader on the page, too (with stuff like the layout of the panels and the stories-within-stories "Black Freighter" chapters that were cut out of the film entirely that cleverly parallel the present-day action, etc). Definitely recommend reading the graphic novel over watching this movie!
14. Name a book where the movie/tv adaptation is better than the original: Requiem for a Dream (2000) was a better experience as a crazy edgy depressing movie than it was as a novel by Hubert Selby Jr. to me:
youtube
I first saw this movie without having any idea what to expect when I was about 16, and even though it's pretty shocking in parts and upsetting to watch I remember really loving it back then and thinking of it as one of my favourite films at the time (I think I had a higher tolerance for certain kinds of edgelord stuff in my stories back in those days sometimes too, haha). This movie has always felt bit like a comic or a live action horror cartoon to me somehow? I think that it kinda goes too far a bit and nearly verges on comedy instead of tragedy at the end due to just how absurd and nightmarish it gets, but perhaps that almost unbelievable heightenedness of it all is kind of why it often feels a bit like a comic or a cartoon to me, too. And I still think there's quite a bit here to enjoy even despite the edginess as well. I think the acting is often very good, the soundtrack and the sound effects and the stylish visuals are great, and that the whole thing effectively creates a lot of very strong emotions like tension and dread and tenderness and wistfulness and loneliness and horror. It's maybe the only Darren Aronofsky film I actually like?
HOWEVER whenever I read the book that it was based on a few years ago I could barely get past the stylistic choices of the writer to enjoy what was being said (he wrote it in the 70s in sort of a dated stream-of-consciousness type writing style without many paragraph breaks or any quotation marks for separating the dialogue or the inner monologue from the prose, which I just found really annoying and off-putting to read). And the part about the book I liked the best, which was the colourful and extremely memorable dialogue and the slang that the characters use, was taken almost verbatim from the book and brought to life well on the screen too, so the whole time I was reading it I was just wanting to hear it said by the movie characters again instead. idk, I think it's a movie I'd definitely watch again sometime, but not a book I'd ever read again. Just more entertaining and less of a slog that way.
18. Which character from a book is the most like you?
Oh, very good question! Hmm... there are certain characters I relate to a lot for various reasons, but i don't know if anybody would say I'm extremely like them, probably? Of the books I've read more recently I feel like I'm sort of a bit of a Frodo character or something, maybe... his personality and his peaceful lifestyle before he gets sent on his adventure just feel very much like how I'd probably be living and socializing with everybody in the Shire myself, and the way he handles stuff like the burden of the ring on him and his reasons for doing things and how he worries about his friends who insist on sticking by his side and acts sort of secretive and more reserved feels relatable to me as well.
25. If you could be a character from a book for just one day who would you be and why? (Bonus: any specific day in the story?)
I want to be Wilbur the pig from Charlotte's Web getting a buttermilk bath and then eating the trough full of leftovers he gets (as a kid I remember thinking the lengthy descriptions of all the table scraps he was eating sounded really good for some reason, and the buttermilk bath sounded delicious to me as well lol).
26. If you could be a character from a book for their entire life who would you be and why?
I think it'd be pretty fun to be Lestat from the Vampire Chronicles because from what I remember he never feels guilty or angsty about much for too long, and he just knows how to have a good time no matter what. Even when he gets super bored or super depressed and then goes catatonic for a while he always eventually manages to bounce back and find something or someone new and interesting to get enthusiastic about and involved with again. He experiences things deeply and in an open-minded way while still never getting too burnt out by it or jaded about it either. If ever I were cursed to become immortal then I think his is the kind of personality that would make it the most enjoyable, anyway.

Time for the backstory boys @fe-oc-week and no drawings sry also it’s edgy
Twins’s personal skill
Kosuke- Sunshine support- Allies will get all stats raised depending on their support
Kaguya- Moon mist- Hp is healed amount varies depending on supports
Twin minds- everything is increasing by 2 each turn on and off field.
Crest
Kosuke- Crest of Yang- If anywhere near the crest of Yin all stats are raised but hp is being drained and gambits is boosted
Kaguya- Crest of Yin- Anywhere near the Crest of Yang all stats are lowered but hp is getting healed and gambits are boosted
Basically before the twins were born, it was a abusive and toxic environment as the House of Kamiyama were those snobby nobles that only care abt crests. Because of that the twin’s parents had planned to run away once the twins were born. So on the 1160 31st of the Eternal moon and the 1st of the Guardian moon, the parents quickly left after the birth leaving the twins with their grandparents, the worst mistake ever made. The Hous of Kamiyama were a famous court family and they were very involved in the political side of things. Because of the the twins spent majority of their childhood with the other nobles of Black eagles.
And than on the 1170, when they were just 10, Kaguya von Kamiyama was unwillingly taken away to be “trained” be her grandparents, far away from her brother. The truth was that Kaguya was sent to those who slither in the dark, to be experimented on, to become a war machine, their experiments changed her physically and mentally. Her crest was once identical to Kouske’s both having the crest of Yang but than veryhting was flipped her crest, her moles everything. Her eyes turned from the violet to a bright jarring yellow and slowly her hair was turning white. Because of the experiments her new crest had downsides, it often gave her more disadvantages than advantages. Though Crowbar’s magic was incredible she mastered it all quickly, as she was taught how to cast reason and faith magic before, but dark was new. But Crowbar had difficulty adapting to the new magic, to her new body, to the new everything, Kaguya was scrapped and was replaced with a new von Kamiyama, Crowbar though this was nothing Kaguya wanted. The mages never called her by her real name, they always call her Crowbar, because of this she only thought important people for her would get to know her real name. Her mental state was a mess too, as she was quite only doing what people, told her too and overall had a fucked up mental state. All of the experiments made her hate her grandparents, Nobels, crests and those who slither in the dark.
While in Kosuke’s side, he was crushed when she was taken away. Because of that incident he vowed to rescue his sister and destroy everyone who tried to take his sister away, who tired to use her and their crest, maybe that’s why he hates Hubert. His grandparents would train him nonstop with the sword giving him too many wounds to mend, too many tears shed. He trained himself to master black magic as Kaguya would often teach him spells and such. Though when everyone would ask where his sister was, he would often cast a gleaming smile that outshone the lies and say things like “She doesn’t like going outside” or “She’s sick so she has to stay home” though his most believable lie was always “As the eldest I have to take care of the political responsibilities like meetings and such while Kaguya takes care of the paper work” is what he told the worried nobles when he was just 10. His smile and lie became his “personality” as he also invented a new Kosuke von Kamiyama, though this was his fault as he didn’t want to bother anyone, if he did house of Kamiyama would be in shambles. Each lie and smile was believed and his personality slowly became louder, happier and more charming, charming many ladies who didn’t know the truth. None of the other Nobel children of the empire knew except Edelgard and Hubert. Somewhere after 1174 as that was when Edelgard was experimented on, Kosuke had met the Princess and her retainer as a meeting. Upon seeing the two, Kosuke had a terrible feeling to them, mainly Hubert. Of course Kosuke couldn’t say anything so he did he usual act which failed to get through them, Edelgard didn’t think too much about it, Hubert on the other hand was irritated by his fake personality. The trio spent more time together, of course it would often just be Edelgard and Ksouke talking and Hubert listening, this was where the hatred for Hubert started as Kosuke thought he was some weird stuck up edgy prick, but he thought of Edelgard as a respectable friend and even had a small crush. Though Edelgard had been told by Kosuke about his sister, while Hubert was somehow gone. Kosuke had told her about how his sister had been taken away since they were 10 to train and he hadn’t seen or heard from her. Edelgard sympathised as this was similar to here though she never told him that.
Also there’s only a relic for Kosuke’s, as Crowbar’s crest is a man made crest so the crest of Yang has a relic called Celestia Twin blades (I can’t name shit okay) also we be sticking with the twin theme *Edit I made it now Called the swords of Apollo and Artemis

who your favorite 3 houses character homey
**Edit: I misread this as favorite THREE 3H characters. So you get an essay lol. I also misread this as Three House (as in House MD) characters so I'm clearly just fucking illiterate. Sorry!**
I had to really think about this one, by which I mean I know who my two favorite characters are without even having to hesitate:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's difficult for me to articulate how much their characters are both Absolutely My Shit without being derivative or retreads of archetypes we've seen hundreds of times.
Hubert being the loyal dog, the scheming vizier, the edgy goth loser, AND the funniest fucking character in the game is just a combination of traits that feel picked at random from a shoddily aimed-at dartboard, but if you've played the game you know they not only work well together, but supplement one another in ways that lead to great character moments with the entire Black Eagles roster.
Edelgard would be a natural choice in her own right. The fact that the fandom tore itself apart over her should be its own ringing endorsement, in my opinion. The ruthlessness of her actions contrasted with the fragility and indecision that she faces, which we as Byleth are privy to... I always felt it was both realistic and understandable (for the most part, barring some questionable plot-related writing decisions). Of course, adding her relationship with Hubert on top of it all is clincher for me. I love a weird, toxic, co-dependent partnership that straddles the line between professional and personal, and I love a pair of friends who devolve into catty, mean-girl whispering at the slightest provocation. They're everything to me is what I'm trying to say.
Third place is harder to pin down. There are a lot of characters I really like, but to crown one over the others feels disingenuous. I really enjoy Claude, Mercedes, Dorothea, Hilda, MANUELA, Ferdinand, all the hits.
There were even some characters that surprised me. I like all the Ashen Wolves, despite how tacked-on they felt. I like Byleth! I think their character is really funny and interesting, and I might be in the minority when I claim that Byleth is their own character (as opposed to a self-insert) as much as Robin is. I like Rhea! I like Rodrigue. I might be sick in the head.
Tumblr media
I'm gonna say Rodrigue and see who comes storming into my inbox about it.
This was a great question, thanks!

Day 9: Past
This challenge is making me realize i barely have characters, just pretty designs LOL.
Tumblr media
Was only able to do some sketches today of what these two might look like/do in the future.
I wrote two pages about their future. And its pretty confusing, their story line isn't pinned down yet. So I imagine their stories ending in two different ways. Either dramatic death by police "Everybody dies" ending. Or the good ending, they live in a cabin in the woods together for the rest of their days.
I'll talk about the change in their looks first. Jeremiah finds confidence in his vampire identity, he shaves his snake tendrils, he's not afraid to show off his vampire ears. He gains a little bit of weight, grows an inch or two. I really like his jet black eyes, but I'm not too sure about the vampire lore in this universe, so his eyes could also be a fun color like purple or some. He's gotta have a face scar from their adventures i just don't know where, hehe. As for jack, I'm still unsure whether he's a natural blonde, or if he dyes his hair blonde so he doesn't look like his father. Either he dyes his hair black, or he lets his natural brown hair grow out. He also has a little stubble, because again he's less afraid of looking like his father. Another thing I'm unsure about in his design is his lip ring, hes supposed to be this macho guy so I don't think he could justify the lip ring. He also has a lot of punk influence though, so maybe thats how he justifies it? Its not gay because its cool and edgy punk. But maybe he gets one at the end of the story. IDK!!! see what i mean when I saw i barely have ocs LMAO nothing is figured out with these two and Ive had them for like 2 and half years now.
I explored the cabin option, bc i love my gay boys and want them happy. They live in this nice isolated cabin, since Jeremiah is the son of the vampire ruler they are living on the border of human land and vampire territory. Jeremiah probably gets delivers of blood from his father, and his father is the one who gave them the cabin. They've adopted three cats, more so jack adopted three cats. I drew up the cats designs, they would have 2 black cats, and one calico. They have batty, who is deaf but has huge ears. Hubert who is older and really beat up. He is missing an eye and an ear. Hubert's like the ring leader of the kitty trio. And then lily who is missing a leg. Jack is reconciling his past by taking care of these messed up creatures. He feels reflected in them, they are broken but he loves and takes care of them. Hubert is his favorite, he has a really rumbling purr.
I imagine their relationship is much better then the early years, falling into a dynamic thats good for the both of them. No more fighting and trying to kill each other, just a symbiotic relationship of Jeremiah drinking jacks blood and jack eating Jeremiah's arms occasionally LOL. Thats what I'm really struggling with, how do u give a happy ending to a delusional psycho cannibal. Jeremiah is very motherly to jack near the end, holds him a lot, kissed his fore head. They've almost switched power dynamics, jack no longer being the lead in the relationship.
I think jack has started to make peace with his homosexuality, he would never say it aloud, but his internal voices have reached an understanding. And by starting the process of dealing with that internalized hatred, he's opened the flood gates to processing all the traumas he been through. I think it would be SO funny if he saw a zoom therapist from their cabin, to understand his childhood trauma. He never tells the therapist about the murders, he still a vigilante about being caught by authorities. Jack spends a lot of time in the woods building those strange forest sculptures. He just spends hours everyday, in pure silence collecting sticks and assembling these huge sculptures. He's stopped popping pills and drinking, but still smokes pretty heavily. He's depressed because he's realizing what he's done to the peoples he's killed. I feel like he wouldn't feel bad about all of them, he still believes he had a right to kill the old men. He doesn't feel bad for the hooker, but the random kid, and the gay men he murdered. His father hurt him and his family so bad, and he's realizing that he wasn't taking power back from the universe he was just doing the exact same thing his father was. Jeremiah keeps him as stable as he can, but he breaks down a couple times, probably tries to commit. Probably tries to turn himself in. But Jeremiah doesn't let him. The story of the cannibal killer stays in news for a long time after. The police are still looking for the culprit. Jack tries not to watch the news, but he does. When he sees the family members talking about how much they want to find the bodies of their loved ones,, he cant handle it. He donates so much money to gofundmes for these familys. I feel like this is such a downer end to their story tho, so its still being work shopped. Like these two boys go on this epic coming of age story, and it ends with major depression hello. I think they could also both just stay delusional and murderous together, and like hunt down the occasional hiker. But IDK.
They still be kissin n shit, they are probably super comfortable with each other since they've spent so much time together. I think it would also be interesting if jack becomes sort of a famous sculpture, and in his old age reveals that he was the cannibal killer. He gets taken into custody, but they don't have any evidence to prove that he he truly is and he gets let go. A homosexual famous sculpture claims he was the cannibal killer from 30 years ago. Jeremiah doesn't age obviously becauses he a vampire. I don't really care about their story after this, I dont want to think about them growing old together and jack eventually dying. That is just sad and uninteresting!

Are we not Engaged? Part 5
Spoilers under the cut
-Dragon loli Azura is getting attacked by Corrupted.
-She’s looking for her sister. Alear 100%
-What does getting Sommie to max joy do anyways? Oh well, making the littler bugger happy is fun XD
-Alear Yunaka C: I can’t stop hearing Ahri when Yunaka talks lol. “I’ve merc’d a time or two,” okay that was legitimately nice word play. Honestly, I like Yunaka most when she slips into killer mode when she scores crits. I’m probably trying to read too deep into her, but I’m curious where her real self starts and ends.
-Louis Yunaka C: Louis gives her tea. What is it with Firenans and tea. Louis asks Yunaka about her family, Yunaka kinda dodges the question and Louis tactfully withdraws. Not much happens here, but I suspect we’re building to something.
-Citrinne uses big hurty lightning \o/
-Celine Louis C: T E A. Celine likes to smell her tea. Louis knows where special tea is and Celine’s excited.
-Alcryst Citrine C: Citrine’s training, Alcryst praises her for it. She’s upset about not being strong enough for some reason.
-Hmm, seems I can’t actually take master seals into battle, that’s interesting.
-On to Brodia castle and chapter 8.
-Oh wow, Brodia castle looks even harder to take than Firene castle.
-Diamant is coming to greet us, hopefully he doesn’t take a shot at us or try to start an international incident.
-There’s something off-puting about Diamant’s eyes.
-Morion’s voice actor is terrible.
-Diamant apparently argues with Morion not to leave the castle. What, is he not capable of defending himself in this kingdom of might? Also the game actually froze in the middle of Morion’s dialogue for a bit, I never had that happen in Three Houses.
-It happened again lol.
-Morion just tosses Roy’s ring at Diamant, wtf... I know I’m supposed to see him as good-hearted and friendly, but he’s just acting like a another doofus.
-Here’s Roy. Thank god his summoning tune wasn’t a remix of Beyond the Fucking Sky. Or at least not one I recognized.
-Oh hey, here Ivy. “She’s dodging all our wyverns’ attacks.” We’ll see if that translates to gameplay lol.
-Ivy’s gonna take my life and my soul. Oh boy, more edgy cliches. At least she’s not as annoying as Hortensia. Oh she’s actually remorseful.
-Oohhh, the Sage Lord was Leif.
-Oh christ I already don’t like Amber.
-Citrinne got a Constance level! \o/ Oh well, with her meh base speed she might as well quadruple-down on poking. Besides, I have Celine when I need a monster-fast mage (17 speed roflmao)
-Etie’s decision to just really really stupid strong worked out when she dealt Zelkov a crushing 22 damage with a crappy Longbow, lol.
-Zelkov is like he's trying to be Hubert but he doesn't realize part of the charm is Hubert just embraces who he is and also takes it out for a romantic evening. At least he’s not lacking in noticeable character traits like Kagetsu.
-”With this ring, nothing and no-one will take me down.” They all say that. Then I send Celine after them.
-We got Leif \o/
-”Emblem of Genealogy” I really fucking hate how Leif is representing Genealogy Gen 2 rather than Thracia.
-”How could I have failed,” you flew straight into an ambush.
-Wait, did we just let Ivy leave???
-King Hyacinth is trying to challenge Morion into combat.
-Morion is toss around death flags like crazy. No idea why Diamant is so afraid when Brodia has been at war with Elusia for ages.
-Diamant is boring as shit as a character. Morion’s supposed to be jolly and fun but he’s just an idiot.
-Finally we reference whether or not Alear can turn into a dragon. She absolutely will before the end.
-Oh my god, Catherine’s alive and she got old and came to Brodia!!!
-Celine Alear B: TEA. Seems bandits are attacking tea trade routes. What is it with Firenans and tea. Eve is sending Celine after the bandits because... she knows the most about tea? What? Alear asks what she’ll do, Celine says she’ll “drive them off with pranks”. Celine, you’re like my best soldier, just go kill them all \o/ Celine laments that real life isn’t so fanciful, then she raises things to 11 by saying she’ll do whatever it takes to protect her people. I mean I have her burn my foes to death easily but eh.
-Oh nice this game carries over Echoes’s weapon transformation system. Except unlike Echoes it gives you materials at better than a drip-feet.
-Framme Chloe A: Oh my god, it’s still the same scene. Framme accidentally gave Chloe a sandwich of fried bugs. This is literally just their B support being repeated!
-Celine Etie B: T E A. Turns out Alfred almost died when he was young and Celine had to toughen up because of it. Etie’s hand is still trembling. Oh she’s using her weird weighted teacups again. Celine’s handled cannonballs???
Celine Alcryst C: Celine’s out late because she can’t sleep. She admits to having recurring nightmares due to lingering trauma of when Alfred was sickly, Alcryst says he fears Diamant dying too. This one was legitimately a good support convo, it’s like something from 3H.
-Citrine Clanne C: Citrinne bugs me, she’s trying to be a refined mature lady but she’s got the same babyface as the other girls. Clanne’s trying to help a withered wildfowe, Citrinne is pleased for it. I think this has something to do with her obsession with getting stronger.
-Oohh, gold corrupted. I wanna see what that’s all about.
-Oh no, the fog of war is back.
-Alear Alcryst C: Alear almost gets ambushed... by a wolf. Alcryst asks the wolf to leave Alear alone... and then begs it to leave... This is worse than anything Bernadetta ever did.
-I began a relay just now. Later I shall see what the ignorant masses achieve with my incredible Louis, Celine, and Chloe.
-Celine Alcryst B: Turns out Morion stupidly made Alcryst worry that his father and brother will die. Alcryst goes to check Diamant whenever he’s woken by his nightmares. They pledge to support each other.
-Alcryst Diamant C: They’re sparring. Diamant is mostly trying to help out Alcryst’s mindset, but Alcryst is stubbornly pessimistic. It ends on Alcryst wondering if Diamant has any weaknesses.
-Alcryst Lapis C: Alcryst vows to protect Lapis because he thinks he’s worthless, but it makes Lapis really uncomfortable.
-Vander Amber C: Vander is devoted and stuff, Amber’s stupidly looking for a legendary weapon he thinks might be at the Somniel because he’s Amber and he’s stupid. Vander tells Amber he needs to make a weapon legendary by becoming legendary.
That’s all for now, next will be chapter 9.

Thoughts on the Black Eagles trailer for FE WTH and the new designs for the Eagles:
Edelgard: I appreciate what they were going for with the way her skirt and cape fan out looking like the tail and wings of an eagle, but this design still looks so... school girly. Also, did they change her voice actress, or did Tara just have a cold when she recorded those lines?
Hubert: I had hair like that when I was in my edgy goth phase. At age 14.
Dorothea: looks almost exactly the same as her normal post time skip look.
Bernadetta: I think the last time I wore my bangs like that, I was 7 years old. We called it the palm tree style. Good day for the Dorodetta shippers though.
Ferdinand: I feel like I don’t want to like his new hair style, but somehow I do. He is fashionable as always.
Caspar: Hedgehog. Appreciate the character consistency though with him being scared of having to fight his dad. Good day for Petra/Caspar shippers (Castra? Pespar?)
Petra: ... it’s weird. It looks more like Almyran style rather than Brigid style to me? But she still looks good. (I mean, it’s Petra, it’s hard to make her look ugly.) I like that she gets to wield double daggers--really suits her. The hair net seems weird at first, but then I remember what happened at Joffrey Lannister’s wedding and how much Petra loves sneak attacks and I’m not mad anymore.
Linhardt: I like the outfit, but the hairstyle? Who came up with that, I wanna have words.
Overall, if I had to rank from best to worst design: Ferdinand > Petra > Dorothea > Edelgard > Hubert > Bernadetta > Linhardt > Caspar

Favorite types of characters in games!!
game guys? uhuhuhhhh I like fucked up little guys. I just tend to gravitate towards the first super edgy or strange guy I see in anything since I was like 4
citing that age bc that's when I saw voldo in soulcalibur and decided he was my fave and so he's the first in that list of weird video game guys that I love dearly. other prime examples being nightmare and yoshimitsu from soulcalibur as well, and like, isaac from castlevania curse of darkness. dhdfbshjbfs
I like a guy with problems but who has style or a lack of style. there we go. because other top faves of mine from games r goro majima from yakuza and hubert from fire emblem despite me never finishing three houses djksngkjsn OH and long time faves japhet and sucre from OFF <3
I don't think too hard with most games but if theres a dramatic guy or some guy with problems I grab them and put them in my cart.

Man, I feel awful even thinking it, but most of MY being all wet behind the ears is an act; if I'm not a threat, I'm less likely to get the shit kicked out of me. But Hubert? He's as soggy as wet blanket AND aloof as a cold fish. A wet fish??? A cold blanket?? And the thing is, he's not like, purposefully vampire edgy. It's not like he's even TRYING to do it. He's just...like that. Genuinely. Like one of those sad dogs you see in animal shelter commercials.

black eagles relationships i like but don’t see talked about enough
Ferdinand and Petra - I adore their supports. You see a lot of Ferdinand’s dorky side with his reading about historic weapons, and you see that he is genuinely curious about Petra’s culture. He admits that he initially didn’t realize how sophisticated Brigidian techniques are and I just adore his vulnerability with her. And then there’s Petra in their A support, admitting she found a second home in Fòdlan, and the two discuss their loneliness? It’s such interesting insight into both characters (especially Ferdie; I’d say these are some of his most well-rounded supports)
Hubert and Dorothea - Dorothea sees right through Hubert’s edgy theatre kid persona. She approaches him like she would any friend right from the beginning and teases him about his love life. She also respects and believes him when he says that unrequited love isn’t his motivation. I would’ve liked a conclusion that wasn’t Dorothea suggesting they marry, but it is really funny that she did that. I love their paired ending too--completely platonic espionage opera! What could be better?
Hubert and Byleth - in my head they have a quirky sitcom where Byleth keeps trying to arrange Edeleth/Ferdibert double dates and Hubert has to attend them. (but seriously, the appeal of Hubert is looking at this man and saying “I’m gonna make you like me”, and then you do it). Outside of my shipping biases, his threats to you are funny as shit considering that he has no power over you and he’s always dying in battle, but once you win his trust he admits that despite looking Blatantly Evil, he truly abhors TWSTID and is already planning their follow-up war. I could easily see him and Byleth co-leading the war in the shadows (and that’s where the dialogue of the aforementioned platonic Huleth workplace comedy takes place). Also my friend who played as m!Byleth told me the “we could be a couplet of birds” line in the A-support still exists regardless of gender. Hubert is demiromantic bi and you CANNOT change my mind
Edelgard and Petra - “Don’t settle for being the bird. Be the arrow instead” Both have a great deal of mutual respect for each other, even though Edelgard is heir to the nation that has kept Petra’s country down for years. You see the same beliefs Petra holds in her supports with Caspar here--that being, “we are not our parents, we can make different choices”. It’s a shame they only have 2 supports. I think it would’ve been cool to see Petra asking Edelgard for Brigidian independence or otherwise talking about how she can achieve her goal.
Edelgard and Linhardt - I actually think people talk about this a bit, but it’s one of my favourite Black Eagles support chains so I have to mention it. This one is the key to understanding that Edelgard’s better world is only possible in her route, when she has the support and opportunity to trust others enough to learn how to listen to them and consider their perspectives. I advise anyone who thinks Edelgard would be a brutal dictator to watch these supports, because they so blatantly contradict that idea? Linhardt initially frustrates her because she knows he’s talented and smart but he doesn’t want to do anything to help the world with that. Characters like Linhardt are usually given an arc in which they overcome an initial selfishness to help others. This is not that. These supports are about Edelgard learning to understand Linhardt and accommodate him. Edelgard agonizes over finding the perfect way to allow him to do his research in a way that suits him--and when she senses his hesitation at her initial plan, she presses him for the problem and reconfigures the idea because she won’t put him in a situation he’s not fully content in. This is astounding character growth (from both of them, but mostly Edelgard). Also the struggle depicted in this chain is just something that spoke to me when I first saw it--”be useful” versus “learn for knowledge’s sake” is pretty much my exact struggle in life 😂 Seeing two of my favourite characters reach a resolution that satisfied both of them was hopeful, to say the least.
Caspar and Ferdinand - What strikes me about their supports is that it compares and contrasts these characters’ ideas of justice against each other. Honestly, the Black Eagles as a whole have takes on morality that are just slightly skewed, and these characters’ arguments about it exemplify it. Caspar just thinks that people who hurt others should be hit right away, head empty no thoughts but j u s t i c e. Ferdinand initially believes that all sense of justice comes from being nobility, and with that comes an obligation to be morally superior. Having Caspar just go “uh yeah, what does nobility have to do with it? I just had to hit that guy” is one way in which Ferdinand’s ideals are challenged. It’s a cool contrast that I think highlights an interesting aspect of the Black Eagles and what they were taught.
Dorothea and Bernie - I love everything about their interaction. If Dorothea were a lesser character, she’d be the mean popular girl who shames Bernie for her messy hair and her anxiety. Instead, Dorothea is patient and Bernie is like “oh no she’s Too Cool for me”. Dorothea also makes note of what Bernie says as she gets too anxious to continue the interaction and aims to comfort her in their next support. We get a good Bernie character moment in their B-support, where she mentions her father ruining her friendship with a commoner boy--and a cathartic moment where Dorothea tells her that her father’s an asshole and that they’re going to be friends anyway. Bernie cries in Dorothea’s arms and AHHHH why didn’t we get MORE of this???
Bernie and Petra - If I could add any support and ending to the game, it would be Bernie/Petra. They have such a good starting point--because of Bernie’s anxiety and Petra being a second language speaker of Fòdlandish, they are prone to miscommunications (which is the general theme of early Bleagles supports). They had a nice 2-support arc where they understand each other a little better--but then there’s the paralogue, where Petra encourages Bernie to come to her homeland with her and Bernie realizes she wants to travel and see amazing things like carnivorous plants. This is fantastic character development for her and is a satisfying conclusion to her arc. I feel like most of Bernie’s endings involve her just reverting back to her hermit self instead of developing a balance between who she was at the beginning and who she’s grown into. I think Petra would offer to let her come to Brigid again, where she helps her navigate a new language and culture. Bernie’s anxiety is still bad but Petra has been in her position and can offer advise and reassurance. Petra is also patient and would give Bernie a safe little house near the carnivorous plants for her to retreat to when overwhelmed. It becomes both of their refuge, with Petra taking time away from her regal duties to spend time with Bernie and her art and her stories. Whether it’s romantic or platonic is up to preference but I low-key ship them 😏

Hubert, you always look so tired. Do you need a nap?
Tumblr media
Still no. Regardless of how often or how many of you ask, the answer will remain the same. It’s safer, in fact, to assume that I do not need rest if I am not resting. Truly, I’m starting to wonder if all of you collectively believe that I’m entirely incapable of something so fundamental despite all evidence to the contrary.
Do I not achieve results? Am I leaving duties untended to? There simply is no reason to be so concerned when my performance as a general and minister have been consistently above expectations. If your intentions are to offend me, congratulations. You’ve accomplished your task.
Now is only to find out how severely you’ll regret it.

its weird that huberts charm is greater then ashes
Tumblr media
Does this deathly visage not charm you??
Really though, there are lots of ways to interpret charm, and I'm not altogether surprised to learn that Hubert is actually high in the charm department.
Hubert is extremely formal. His manners are impeccable. (I mean, when he's not threatening people. That's very rude no matter how nicely you dress it up, Hubert.) A lot of Hubert's supports involve him approaching the other Black Eagles to reason with them over a situation. Hubert is a character who actually resorts to using persuasion quite often, despite his affinity for also using knives.
And that makes sense! For someone who mostly operates in the shadows through spying and covert deals, the ability to control a conversation, persuade, lie, negotiate, is absolutely vital. Plus, he repeatedly shows that he is very good at assessing people, so he can adjust his "performance" for them accordingly.
We all like our jokes about Hubert being a cringey emo rat boy, but a lot of that comes from 1) seeing bits of his personality slip out in private moments (secretly confessing his fear of heights, for instance), 2) Hubert and Edelgard both being painfully obvious in their secret-keeping when you already know what they're hiding, and 3) just general association of any gothy character with cringey Hot Topic-wearing teens (I admit to joining in on this even though all my Certified Goth friends would probably murder me for it)
With that last point especially, it's probably also important to keep in mind that Hubert probably has very different trope associations for a Japanese audience. The suave but edgy butler character is pretty common in anime, but not so much in western media. I know that the Japanese script for Hubert has him using a specific kind of formal language that doesn't have an easily translatable equivalent in English, so he's lacking some of the nuance that likely makes him seem more charming in Japanese.

On the topic of a potential Hubert/Mercedes support chain, I think another point of information that might be interesting to note is that Hubert has an advice box submission where he admits he used to fear the goddess as a child.
It'd be very interesting to explore how that fear turned into what Hubert feels for the goddess nowadays, especially for someone like Mercedes, who probably didn't live with that fear of her. Just some extra food for thought ^^
[link to the Hubert/Mercedes support chain post mentioned]
I totally forgot about that advice box submission! Good catch :D
For those who also forgot about Hubert's arguably most edgy advice box letter: "When I was a child, I feared such trivial things as divine punishment and grudges held by the dead. These days, I fear zealots and grudges held by the living instead."
As well as his and Mercedes’ supports going into why that changed, I would also like a small explanation on why Hubert had this fear in the first place. Is it a little spoken up part of Church doctrine that the Vestra’s enforced? Does it have to do with the Vestra’s being close with the Hresvelg’s who are direct decedents of Great Emperor Wilhelm Paul Hresvelg who was crowned by Saint Seiros herself-- and therefore have closer ties with the religion/Goddess? Or is a healthy fear of divine retribution something Hubert’s father had, given his position, and he taught it to his son (by example or on purpose)?
Either way-- yes, I agree that this is an excellent subject to come up in a support with Mercedes! I always thought Hubert’s change came from learning what happened to Edelgard and her siblings. But there could have been a different catalyst. If anyone can get unique backstory from him (besides Edelgard) it’s Mercedes.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

Note
the fact that chuunibyou can be translated as “8th grader syndrome” really just describes it outright, so it would be really funny if the purple haired bastard is being all edgy or whatever and someone cuts in with a “you’re not 13 anymore”. the aftermath would be hilarious
I want Hubert to say it

That L was so adorable, thank you so much!
I'm sending a lot of questions because these are very interesting, but ignore the ones you don't want to answer if they're too many.
1, 2, 3, 11, 13, 19 and 20
Also, I love Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind! I'd love to know your opinion on the ending, and if you consider it more happy or sad, if at all, and why, but I wonder if that's too much a spoiler to ask on anon? Is it spoiler something from a film almost 20 years old?
I hope you're feeling better today.
1. A movie you enjoyed as a kid that you don't now:
I rewatched George of the Jungle recently, and unfortunately it did not hold up to my rosy childhood memories. Annoying talking animals and fart jokes just don't quite cut it for me like they used to... 😔 but at least I finally understood some of the adult innuendos lol
2. A movie you disliked as a kid that you like/love now:
I had a phobia of The Nightmare Before Christmas due to being spooked by clips of it when I was little (I think it was the scene of the kid pulling a shrunken head out of a box and the parents screaming about it that scared me real bad). I was probably about 15 when I finally decided to watch it, because an animator gave a career talk at our school and showed us some cool behind the scenes clips of how it was made. I then realized it was no longer scary to me, and I could safely appreciate the cool artistic talent and hard work behind it all
3. Your favourite movie as a kid:
The Princess Bride! I would watch that all the time when I was tiny, but always make sure to fast-forward any parts with blood, because I was pretty sensitive to onscreen violence 😅 I think I had a crush on Westley, maybe
11. Are there any movies you watch on special occasions every year (Christmas, Halloween, birthdays, your mother's aunt's wedding anniversary, etc.)?
There are a few movies that seem to always be on TV during our Christmas holidays every single year: A Christmas Story, Elf, the live-action Grinch, and It's a Wonderful Life. My best friend and I also had a yearly tradition at my parents' Christmas Eve-Eve party of dressing up in ugly Christmas sweaters, snatching a bowl of ketchup chips from the snack table, and sneaking off together to watch a deliberately non-festive movie. It was a different movie every year, and the only ones I remember us watching for sure are Jumanji and E.T. I don't think I have any other rewatching traditions, though I do like to rewatch the Lord of the Rings trilogy every few years. That was by far my favourite cinematic universe obsession growing up, and they still hold up as some of the best movies ever made now
13. Name a movie adaptation you thought was better than or equal to its source material.
Requiem for a Dream is more fun to me as a movie than a book. Well, as "fun" as a story that edgy and depressing can be, I suppose 😅 It's just way more enjoyable with all the punchy comic-like visuals and music and sound effects and hearing the colourful dialogue out loud than wading through all of Hubert Selby Jr.'s pretentious, unpunctuated beatnik prose. I also think Fight Club, Gone Girl, Ghost World, and The Silence of the Lambs are excellent adaptations that are either on par with or superior to their books.
19. Name a movie that blew your mind.
It's more the behind the scenes of Who Framed Roger Rabbit that blows my mind... It was considered one of the most complicated movies of all time to make because of how difficult it was to animate the characters into the live-action scenes. And thinking about the precision and patience those artists must have had is mind-boggling to me. This little video here explains it pretty well:
youtube
20. What genre mash-up would you most love to see that either hasn't been done yet or hasn't been done enough?
I'd love to see more movies that are somehow both funny and scary at the same time!
And what I think of the ending of Eternal Sunshine (possible spoilers): when I was a teenager I found the ending nice and fairly hopeful, but at this age I seem to find it a bit more melancholy and sad? Not sure what the shift was exactly, other than maybe I can see the adult problems and emotional baggage and immaturity more clearly now that I am an adult myself. I guess it's open-ended enough that it can be interpreted multiple ways, which works really well for the kind of story it is.
