ORV Characters Ranked by Least to Most Likely to Commit White Collar Crime

You guys said you wanted my ORV takes, and I try not to say things unsolicited, so I'll drop the good meta-analysis and literary criticism that I'm known for. For comedy purposes please pretend that ORV is American.

Omniscent Reader's Viewpoint characters broken down by likelihood to commit white collar crime, least to most:

Lee Hyeonseong: he's convinced that he's never committed a crime in his life. Intentionally, of course not. Unintentionally, he takes shopping for groceries extremely seriously, and is sometimes so wrapped up in the fruit inspection experience that he'll leave without paying. Due to his innocent face, bulk, and sheer confidence, he's never caught. In an economically thrifty maneuver, KDJ always sends him on snack runs for parties and texts him math problems while he's there. He insists it's like couponing. It's not couponing.

Jeong Huiwon: similarly, of course she would never choose to commit a crime. Also similarly, when KDJ says, 'Hey, wanna commit a crime?' she always participates. Since the crime is normally targeted at rich people, KDJ can usually morally justify it to her. She calls this harm reduction. It's not harm reduction.

Lee Jihye: would love to commit a crime in theory, almost never in practice. She has an idealized image in her mind of the ideal high school experience and it involves grand theft auto. However, the worst she ever gets is breaking & entering and trespassing, mostly because she didn't stop to wonder if the building was abandoned or not. She can't even shoplift from Claire's.

Shin Yuseung: the kind of kid who sets the dissection frogs in the school laboratory free. Looks up illegal exotic animal trading on the deepweb and sighs in longing. But exotic pet trading isn't very Animal Rights of her, so she just leaks information to the CIA and busts the rings. Lee Gilyeong convinces her to track down shady sellers on Craigslist and bust their kneecaps. Neither of them view this as significantly different from the dissection frog liberation. KDJ gets her a rescued exotic cat for her birthday as a reward.

Lee Gilyeong: self-explanatory.

Han Suyeong: she's been pirating media since she was eleven and has never stopped. World-class expert in pirating everything. She's the unsung hero who rips the CDs and games and puts them online. Runs the pirating websites. Has never paid for a webnovel or manwha or manga in her life. Despite this, she insists that pirating books is immoral and that people should support small authors. The FBI knows she exists and has been trying to catch her for years. She brags about this constantly.

Yoo Sangah: has committed tax fraud before, will commit tax fraud tomorrow, is currently committing tax fraud. Embezzles her company's embezzlement. Insists that she's only committing victimless crimes, mainly because she doesn't view business executives as people. Her ability to evade the IRS is mythological and it's how KDJ got a crush on her.

Yoo Junghyeok: does not understand adult life well enough to knowingly commit any sort of white collar crime. He is this high on the list because he enables and helps KDJ in literally everything he does, especially using his clout as an influencer. This is because KDJ has convinced him that these things aren't crimes, and he doesn't understand adult life well enough to figure it out.

Kim Dokja: has done every white collar crime under the sun. I can't emphasize enough how much crime he does. He's currently blackmailing SYS's college tuition out of a US Senator. HSY makes the shell companies and launders so much money with him. Alternates between running a pyramid scheme and a ponzi scheme depending on the month. Started a cult that one time but we don't like to talk about that. Runs the betting ring for YJH's esports games. Fixes the games. YJH does not know he does this, but KDJ splits the profits and Yoo Mia also needs a college tuition so he decides not to think about it too hard. Big into crypto and runs every crypto scam you can possibly think of, which is normally where the the ponzi schemes come in. Steals YJH's identity often. Somehow everything he does is technically legal. The only crime he does not commit is pirating. Exclusively targets the wealthy and ultra-wealthy and has never stolen money from a poor person. Sugar daddies all of his friends and pays all college tuitions. Anonymously yet obviously sponsors huge amounts of money to YJH's Twitch streams, mostly in apology for the ID theft. Would really rather be living a quiet life in a big house with all of his friends, but that big house ain't gonna pay for itself.

Quick preface before I get into this- This is an add-on to a previous thread about ORV, linked HERE. You won’t need to read it to understand this post, but you can if you want! if you’re looking for a better look at ORV as an allegory for trauma, I’d recommend @bidokja’s blog. He’s the one that clued me into these themes in the first place, and he’s really good at explaining them! I’m going to do my best here, but I won’t be able to cover everything. 

    So! Stories in ORV have a dual role– they’re both a way to cope with trauma and a traumatizing cycle. I’ll be talking about the former here- I might make another post later about the latter, but It won’t fit into this one. 

    ORV has a LOT to say about trauma– specifically, about the ways that people cope with it. And not all of these are directly related to stories! We have the Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World, for example- Regressors, Returnees, and Reincarnators. These, like stories, are both a way to cope with trauma and the trauma itself. Yjh’s regressions let him change the traumatic events of previous rounds (kinda sorta- he can’t actually rewrite things, but the concept of saving everyone does let him cope), but they also trap him in a nightmarish cycle of watching everyone he loves die over and over again (hey! PTSD much?). The returnees get to escape their trauma on Earth, but they’re unable to interact with their loved ones (hey look! dissociation!). Nirvana’s reincarnation lets him live unfettered by the past, but they trap him in an eternal ‘present’ (I didn’t write this one too well…). There’s also the ‘past, present, future’ thing, but I’ll spare you the rant on that for now.

    Stories are introduced to the fray with the ‘author, reader, protagonist’ bit. The character’s connections to the story serve both as a way to cope with trauma, and as a shackle of sorts that chains them to the narrative. They also line up nicely with our other coping mechanisms! Our protagonist, who has the power of regression, tends to live in the past (his previous rounds). His protagonist status gives him ‘plot armor’, in a way- but it also traps him as the focal point of a horrible tragedy. The reader, who is a returnee, tends to live in the future (what with all his constant planning). His knowledge as the reader gives him a leg up in planning and understanding the characters, but it also traps him behind the fourth wall as an observer (remember Uriel’s ‘most powerless god’ line? Yeah, that.) The author, who isn’t technically a reincarnator but I think Avatar counts, lives in the moment. Her privilege as the author gives her the ability to write her own story, but it leaves her at the mercy of her audience (the editors, the constellations). And it’s only together that they can break the cycles of tragedy they’re trapped in. I have so many thoughts about this, but I’m going to skip straight to what I was talking about in my OG post. (quick thing to remember, though- none of our characters use just one of these coping mechanisms. Hsy is also a reader, Kdj is also a protagonist, Yjh is also an author.)

    Now, in my Og post, I was talking about the way the past is portrayed in ORV. The original novel, for example, has already happened by the beginning of ORV- and because the past (specifically, reliving it) has links to the themes of overcoming trauma, we can look at it to determine what ORV is trying to say about how you overcome a traumatic past.

    It would have been easy for Sing-Shong to have KimCom undo the tragedies in WoS, but they don’t. WoS still happens in its entirety- and this is for a reason! In ORV, the past isn’t something you can change. Because Kdj has read WoS, because Hsy has written it, because Yjh has lived it- WoS will never go away. Because trauma doesn’t go away. You can’t just resurrect dead family members, or undo bullying, or anything of the sort. It will always have happened. But what you can do is move forward. WoS still happened, but everyone was there to pick up the pieces. Everyone from WoS is saved- the outer gods, secretive plotter, the characters from the 999th round. 

    Whew! That was a long post… I still have SO MUCH MORE to say, though. I barely even scratched the surface of Orv! I’ve barely talked about the ‘reader, author, protagonist’ thing, or the future/the present– hell, I barely even MENTIONED stories as trauma! But I think I did pretty ok talking about the themes needed for my OG post, so I think I’ll leave the rest up for later conversations. I’m super glad @mae-i-scribble added her comments! I really didn’t elaborate enough originally..

REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR YHK (AND NOT BETRAY ME LIKE MY FRIEND (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE /lh)):

1. Reader/Protagonist/Writer dynamic, you literally cannot get more cosmic than that. they could not exist without each other. they need each other.

2. the dedication, devotion, gratitude, affection and love they show to each other. the acts of love they express. the fact that each and every action we keep talking about is CANON.

3. the many different flavours of their dynamics and how natural it is. they are cringefail losers, they look at each other and decide that they are forever stuck together. they are all so annoyed with each other, they all cannot leave each other. HSY IS THE BREADWINNER !!! YJH IS THE HOUSEHOLD HUSBAND !!!! KDJ IS JUST THERE AND THE OTHER TWO ARE JUST REALLY FUCKING HAPPY HES THERE !!!! THEY WOULD PROBABLY LET KDJ DO WHATEVER AS LONG AS HE WAS THERE AND NOT OFF DOING SOME BS SELF SACRIFICIAL PLAN !!!

4. the fact each of them have been so intrinsically affected by each other. none of them would have survived without the other two. all of them have been changed by each other.

5. they WANT each other. if one of them went off without any notice by god the other two will do everything they can to make sure that idiot comes home. it’s esp prevalent with the other two abt kdj. they WANT kdj. they want him safe and happy and WITH THEM. they see kdj trying to hide his flaws and trauma and they go “no. we’ve already seen all of it. we want everything. we want every part of you here and happy.”

6. the amount of trust they have with each other. the trust you would need to let someone go, to trust that they’ll come back and come back with the other idiot. the trust you’d have to have to be able to leave everything to the other, to trust that they are doing everything they can on their end. the trust they have that the others can handle themselves. how can you trust someone so much like this? how can you trust that they will follow through? how can you trust so much that you will wait however long it takes? how can someone even take that?

7. they are precious to each other. yjh needs the other two alive because they defy his expectations in ways he never realized could happen. hsy holds every memory she has of yjh and esp kdj close to her heart. kdj sincerely wishes for the happiness of yjh and hsy, he cares more abt their happiness than his own. (what he doesn’t realize is that their happy end involves his happiness too.) they mean so much to each other

8. they chose each other over the world. over themselves. they would hand over anything and everything to each other if needed.

9. “I realized something just then. I managed to get this far because these two lived on their own terms - respected my decisions in their own ways.

I began thinking; with these two around, maybe not all hope was lost, after all.”

10. they are capable of hitting each other on the head when they are reaching concerning levels of stupid. hsy literally crashes a yjh vs kdj fight just to make sure they wouldn’t actually kill each other. kdj breaks yjh out of his uncaring attitude. yjh and hsy would probably beat up kdj every time he went “hey i’m back” if they weren’t also mildly emotionally every time it’s happened.

13. wasn’t there an arc where kdj intended to give hsy a love letter for a scenerio but yjh went “this is so bad” and also didn’t they in the same arc have this short scene where they talk abt novels and hsy wanting to write a novel later and discussing genres and then kdj FOR SOME REASON brings up romance?? and then they try to change the subject to jhw and lhs, like. y’all aren’t slick.

14. the book is literally about love and stories and loving stories and human connections and relationships and how stories facilitate connections. like. knowing that and knowing who yjh, hsy and kdj are. they are literally the pillars of the novel. they are so incredibly important to the story not only as individuals but also as a trio.

I suddenly had a thought. Perhaps I was a bit lucky that she was here. At least I wasn’t alone in knowing that this world was a ‘novel.’
