I started an online boutique this year and it hasn’t done so well. However, I’m excited at the prospect of growing this next year. What would you do to make 2023 a great business year?

Focusing on networking. Business is all about people, people and people. You’ll notice sometimes that even the stupidest ideas are funded - all because of people and their connections. It doesn’t matter who you’re connecting with, whether it’s an investor or a supplier or a customer - you’re going to have to get your extrovert side and put yourself out there.
- Attend events: conventions and seminars in your industry (for instance, if you have a fashion business - go for textile conferences), founder events, fundraisers (make sure you’ve got business cards to hand out)
- I don’t know what industry your business is in or what you sell but I’d recommend doing physical pilots - testing out at student campuses, cafes, local places… even if your business is online, you need to understand in-person feedback. This is what I did with my start up, and I learned more from my customers’ verbal feedback than I would’ve otherwise
- Invest your time in thoroughly understanding digital media marketing and costing (finance). Two areas that I feel every single founder needs to understand no matter what their industry or skill sets are. Even if neither interests you, at least get the basics of both down so that you can’t be scammed by anyone.
- Read the lean start up methodology. Have a focus on your mission statement and don’t deviate from it. If you have multiple products in your business and you’re not able to sell them, narrow it down to 2-3 and really focus on that niche. Pick and choose what you do with your work time wisely.
- Whether you’re selling a physical product or an online service, always keep a sample booklet printed and in your bag. When people ask about your business, you can quickly show them the physical catalog. Add a QR code of your boutique.
Why a physical copy? Generally when you show them your online business you’d show them on your phone, right? Don’t do that. Try to get the person to visit the website from their own phones. When you show them your website from your phone, then you can’t track the number of visitors visiting your website. Having a QR code on your booklet would mean that the person in front has to scan it from their phone, which always you to later check your analytics and also drives traffic to your website. It also gives you an idea of how many people you’ve met and shown the booklet to.
- Setting monthly, achievable targets. Study your competition, see how they grow. Learn from them so that you don’t make their mistakes. Constantly seek education.

Love Is A Journey AND SO ARE DATING APPS
Hinge is an online dating app with the tagline: “The dating app designed to be deleted.” Compared to its competitors’ branding (e.g., Tinder’s “Swipe Right,” Bumble’s “Date, Meet, Network Better,” and Match’s “Start Something Real”), Hinge is explicit about having the goal of a one-time, as-short-as-possible customer journey. But how is that a good product strategy if the customer journey is designed to be as short as possible?
The Hinge customer journey includes ample marketing (social media ads, billboards, radio commercials I’m sure…, word of mouth), which are designed to lead a customer to download the app and then start sending out “likes” and conversing with prospects. When users find a suitable match and are ready to end their dating journey, they simply delete the app (or don’t??) and end their customer journey for good (unless they return?). I am curious about the Hinge algorithm (i.e., the way that they decide which profiles are presented and/or promoted towards which people) and if this algorithm considers the number of times you have previously downloaded Hinge.
Richardson notes in his article in HBR titled “Using Customer Journey Maps to Improve Customer Experience” that “[t]he more touchpoints you have [with the customer], the more complicated…[the customer journey] map becomes.” Hinge seems to be attempting to limit touchpoints so that customers can find a long-term dating and/or life partner, delete the app, and not return. Perhaps their tagline signals to customers that Hinge is not trying to scam users, but is truly invested in successful outcomes? They do promote successful couples with their marketing. Hinge also seems to signal this commitment to dating success by only offering a limited daily number of “likes” that each user can deal out, which forces users to be choosy or pay for more. If Hinge was truly living its mission summarized by me as date, delete, and done then they wouldn’t be as profitable as I suspect they are. But hey, I met my SO on Hinge so can’t complain!
