So we’re talking Media Piracy a lot for good reason but I haven’t seen anyone talking about illegally downloading music on an Apple computer (which I unfortunately have) so if anyone needs it, here we go.
I learned how to do this when I was like. Eight? But apparently everyone just listens to Spotify now so lemme teach you some stuff because guess what, now you will no longer be at the mercy of "What's on Spotify" or "They removed this from Spotify" or "There are too many ads on Spotify" NO MORE
First of all: don’t pirate indie music you cowards. Pirate music from big corporations and pay small creators. ok so now we’ve got that out of the way,
1. Find the song you want to download on YouTube. If it’s a song that’s officially on sale, often times adding “topic” to the end of the search will get you the official audio.
Tumblr media
2. Put the link into a Youtube to Mp3 converter and download the file. Most YouTube to mp3 converters are easily found on google, but this is the one I use currently.
Tumblr media
3. Open the Music app. I’ve noticed a lot of people don’t use it which is fair because it sucks. Does anyone remember iTunes in like 2008–2014 that shit fucking SLAPPED i miss it being good. But anyway it’s the app just called “music.”
Tumblr media
4. Go to the bookmarks bar. Click File > Import.
Tumblr media
It will automatically take you to your downloads folder. Then select the file(s) you want to download, and hit “Open.”
Tumblr media
5. It will automatically be added to your Recently Added. Once there, right-click “Get Info.”
Tumblr media
That IMMEDIATELY gives you a VERY easy-to-edit box for all of the information you want to put in. Title, artist, album, album artwork, lyrics, etc. Some useful notes: “File” will show you the technical data, the app doesn’t tend to load images that are over 2000x2000, and the “Options” tab can give you the opportunity to cut out beginnings or endings of songs or adjust the volume.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Soon as you hit "OK," it's all saved!
Tumblr media
Also, if you plug your phone into the computer and import, this will automatically be added to your Music app so it'll be on your phone too.
yar har and all that

WHAT WAS THAT THING YOU EXPLAINED TO ME AGES AGO FOR WAITING ROOM ABOUT HOW TO LISTEN TO SONGS THAT ARENT ON SPOTIFY ??? I NEED RED FLANNEL GEORGIA AND I NEED IT NOW
AKAJDFJSKFKS OK THIS IS MY FAVORITE SPOTIFY FEATURE YAY!! relying on people to have uploaded things as a podcast sucks so bad because they get taken down a lot and also it breaks up the vibe because the title and artist are always something random and the little picture is just a sunset or whatever idk IT BREAKS UP THE VIBE
so you can do this from any device, (i prefer to do it from my computer though for reasons that'll be explained later) and if you have spotify premium you'll also be able to listen to it on all devices, but first thing you're going to do is go into your account settings and turn on the local files option
Tumblr media
once you do that, it'll access any downloaded audio files you have, and you can listen to them on that device. they'll be stored in a spotify playlist named local files, similar to the liked songs one. (i would also recommend making a separate folder for the songs you want downloaded on spotify, at least on the computer, i know you can change which folder it takes from there. otherwise you might end up with random audio you downloaded for something specific in your spotify library.)
if you have premium, you can also turn on spotify on other devices, and add the song you downloaded to an actual playlist
Tumblr media
and it'll sync up on all your devices and you can download the playlist on every device. if you don't have premium though you'll either have to download it on every device or you can only listen to it on the first one you downloaded it on.
now for actually getting the song. this is really simple I tend to go straight to youtube and it's usually pretty easy to find the song I want, and then I just put the link into a youtube to mp3 converter (dodging the hot moms in my area. maybe next time ladies) and then I download it. make sure it's in the right folder and boom! I now have mitski's cover of let's get married to cry to on demand! soundcloud also works though obviously because any audio file will do, and a lot of unreleased songs get uploaded to soundcloud, and there’s a handy little download button right there and you don't need an account! great if you run into a song that isn't on youtube. totally unrelated but I have phoebe bridger's cover of iris downloaded
now. reasons I tend to do it from my computer specifically.
1. most shady websites are just easier to navigate lol. it's twice as hard to deal with pop ups when things are also rotating your phone screen around. so yeah i'd prefer to hit up the mp3 converter from my laptop
2. if you have any songs where the only video for it has an annoying intro or outro, it can be easier to edit it out. like lil nas x's cover of jolene was from the youtube channel for some fucking radio station or whatever so I had to edit that out. and my laptop's native audio file player has a trimming option, so I didn't have to download extra software like I would on my phone
3. and most importantly to me, you can make it aesthetically pleasing. when you just download the audio file it won't have an album picture and it won't have an artist name it'll only have whatever the file name is as a title, which you can change obviously but it doesn't fix the rest of it. on the computer it is so easy to download a metadata editor, and you can edit the file's metadata however you want and it'll have the little artist line and the album if you want and you can put whatever picture goes with the song but this is of course not required it just matters a lot to me personally
anyway have fun!

How to compose like Toby Fox
I analyzed Toby's music... here's the backbones to his songs, and various Toby techniques! I included ways to get started with recording your music! Read more to see 👀
Battle themes
For the music Toby uses in his battle themes, he starts with a 1-2 measure long riff. He gradually adds in more instruments, looping the original track from the intro. A simple tune you can hum to. After adding in several instruments, he adds the bridge of the song. He removes the beginning melody and lets the background music continue for a measure. Then he slows down the song and keeps one instrument. After that he adds a buildup and changes the octave, or adds harmony to the final chorus. At the very end, he adds a finale that ties the beginning to the end of the song.
Background music
For the background music during exploring, he makes the songs easily "loopable" so the beginning fades into the end. He uses orchestra sound fonts and ambient noise. During emotional short cut scenes he uses faint opera vocals as well. Don't forget the random wind whooshing sounds.
Instruments used
Undertale mostly focused on chiptune synthesizers and 8 bit sounds. Toby branched out to orchestra instruments in chapter 1 of Deltarune, and emphasized his piano skills. In chapter 2, he fell in love with the harpsichord that he'd romanced many years ago in his homestuck side gig. Thank goodness he left the weird overused synth pitch bending in his past. Good grief, that was... creative. Toby's been experimenting with brass instruments, which makes sense. Toby played trumpet in jazz band during high school. After his work on Pokémon, Toby's music has become diverse, and each song has a unique twist. Working with other artists was definitely a great step for him! Don't be afraid to reach out to other beginner musicians and collaborate!
Making music like Toby
To make music like Toby... experiment! Create a long-term relationship with the harpsichord and mash notes together until you find yourself playing them over and over, nodding your head in satisfaction. You gotta quickly record the track and tweak it later so you remember what it sounds like.
Simple ways to record music
Music professionals will K1LL me for this one. Here's some ways to begin recording music without buying that 1999$ springo bingo synth board with the doodoofart pro vst producing sound bit 2000.
Using these tips, you can record and change sound fonts! Once you record your track, you can mess around with the sound on your recording device! That's how Toby has so many instruments 👀
Look up videos on YouTube about converting music into wav and mp3 files. Toby didn't know what a wav file was when he began music production! Don't be scared of all these fancy weird words. You'll catch on! There's no shame in going on the web for help. Music production can get very complicated with random errors and shit. (I have cried over my piano before) That's what reddit is for! Frustration is inevitable. Just take a deep breath and STAY DETERMINED. Even if you can't play piano? Watch tutorials and practice! Toby is self taught and doesn't write sheet music!
If you have an electric piano keyboard, you can hook it up to a computer with a cable that's easily found on Amazon. You can also use an iPad pro, hook THAT up and record it in a program like garage band. I recommend investing in studio one 5 on your computer! If you've got studio one... get a vocaloid software bundle and mess around with piapro studio 👀 add vocals!!! There's some cheap vocaloids out there! Toby's worked with some vocaloid producers in the past! Mess around and have fun!
Get creative!
The keyboard is your playground. Toby says that simplicity is important. He mentioned this in the annotations included on the sheet music that came with the undertale collectors edition. You don't need to go overboard with advanced shit to sound professional. Some of the best songs are simple and catchy!
Toby would want you to be kind to yourself and your hands. Be patient. Music takes time! Make your own songs and follow your own path. Create your own style so when people hear your music they know it's you!
Good luck!

is there any particular site/software you recommend for downloading videos from youtube?
Yes, I have 2 options that I've spoken about on here before! One is actual software and the other is a direct command-line program. Basically, that means that you're directly interfacing with your computer and telling it what to do through lines of text instead of through software. In macOS you use the Terminal app, whereas Windows has cmd.exe
Yt-dlp is the command line program. On top of letting you rip Youtube videos directly from the site, this program supports a huge array of other video/media websites. The program is highly customizable as well; I would highly recommend at least installing FFmpeg, which allows you to download videos in quality higher than the default 720p. Here’s a guide on how to do that for Windows and I wrote a guide here for Mac (I forgot to write in the guide that you should install FFmpeg via Homebrew).
If the Github page is overwhelming and too technical for you, don't worry, there are tons of guides you can look up online from tech websites/subreddits that use more approachable language. It took me a while to figure this out, lol. But I really do think this is an excellent tool.
However, if you are just looking for software, I can personally recommend the 4K Video Downloader. It's a fantastic application (compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linus) that allows you to save videos and mp3s from a huge variety of websites. You can download entire Youtube playlists, convert Youtube videos to mp3s, download videos with subtitles, etc. Most functions are free but a premium version can be bought for a one-time fee of $25.
