#how am I watching Dan and Phil help

People are talking about how several older Youtubers are retiring/leaving YouTube at the same time as OGs like Dan-and-Phil and Smosh coming back, and I think a big part of the reason is that audiences for any creator will change and decay, right? And a lot of these YouTubers who are falling to the wayside now are people who had popular appeal. Like. POPULAR. Mainstream. Appeal. They never went too strongly towards particular principles and never did anything toooo unpalatable because that's not the kind of audience they had (and they made the right decision for themselves in doing that of course).

But yk who watches the weirdos recording on shitty cameras in their bedrooms making content that makes people go "ugh get HELP and be NORMAL"? Other weirdos.

And a core reason that DnP at least (I am not familiar enough with Smosh but feel free to weigh in Smosh fandom) are able to make a comeback and have a proper audience even now is because their audiences majorly have been queer neurodivergent weirdos with strange humours and strange special interests and they never sold out this audience. They could've easily steered towards safer content, been less weird and just laughed about how it's the FANS who are weird not them, could have taken more centrist views when talking about anything political, it would have gotten them a massive following after the initial breakthrough.

But they stuck by us that's why we stick by them. There's no formula for success here, this is just them having respected an audience that therefore respects them back even all these years later.

Mainstream popularity is fickle it has to change it will keep changing. "Weirdos" (or what people are calling "freaks" now) have only so many avenues so the real ones, they stick together, yk?

I was slightly bored and couldn't decide on what to do... and then I remembered the Hunger Games Simulator existed.

And I have been watching too much Dan and Phil lately...

One thing lead to another and I eventually ended up with the following:

The Phangry Games

Naming logic went something like this: Hunger to Hungry. Gotta insert the infamous Ph at the beginning. Phangry.

Also yes Pastel Phil is accidentally named Punk Phil I didn't notice the mistake until after I began.

And it turned out 1000% more entertaining than I ever thought it could be.

So right off the bat, we have BIG Dan and Craftie Dan planning their fishing trip while Hiatus Dan is staying in character and fucking right off.

Then a couple of them are fighting for bags but the bloodbath is staying pretty safe right now.

In fact, there is only 1 death during the bloodbath.

Thought that meant that Day 1 was going to be a slow start but I SPOKE WAY TOO SOON! First, one of the craftie boys bites the dust to an infection of all things. Apparently HE doesn't provide medical care for infections.

Interactive Introverts Phil also tried to get rid of the current Phil but he managed to escape. So really, no harm no foul.

Then the Acid Rain started and DAMN DAN AND PHIL (spoiler: especially Dan) CAN NOT SURVIVE ACID RAIN VERY WELL AT ALL!

The day ended with only 11 survivors. 7 Phils and 4 Dans. PINOFs, Punks, Crafties, and WAD Era have all been completely eliminated!

At this point, I decide I am rooting for the 2009 boys, Sister Daniel, or COTY and Revival (AKA the Current/2024) Phil. But I was also just immensely amused at how quickly the simulator popped off this time.

The first night was pretty quiet with no deaths or anything occuring. Some of the Phils snuggled up together while Revival Phil snuggled up with 2009 Dan.

Then almost immediately on Day 2, a group with both the 2009 Boys, COTY Phil, and Sister Daniel actually raid Revival Phil's camp. So 10/10 on the betrayal there 2009 Dan.

It stays quiet the rest of day 2. AND INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH ON NIGHT 2!

Phil STOP TRUSTING 2009 DAN HE LITERALLY HELPED RAID YOUR CAMP EARLIER!

But besides the whole trust and betrayal plot with those two, we have both of the hiatus boys deciding that it was time to start the hiatus for everyone else.

Hiatus Phil going for the more strategic kill as Pastel Phil is only Phil who has a kill up to this point.

Day 3 brings the feast. And just like BIG Dan tripped and died during the acid rain...

Coming out of the closet apparently involved tripping out of the closet.

The feast also included the continuation of the Hiatus Boys kill streak with them getting rid of half of the remaining Dans.

I really apperciate Hiatus Dan's commitment to lore accuracy.

This left only 6 tributes for the rest of Day 3.

Which turned to the final five tributes almost immediately with 2009 Phil finishing off the TATINOF era team.

All that is left in the Final Five is the 2009 Boys, the Hiatus Boys, and Revival Phil.

Night 3 is pretty quiet. But Day 4 ends up leveling the playing field with Hiatus Phil accidentally eating toxic berries.

Nothing in particular happens on Night 4 EXCEPT for the fact that 2009 Dan is now snuggling up with Hiatus Dan.

AND WITH A TASTE OF HIS OWN BETRAYAL MEDICINE FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE GAME, Hiatus Dan tries but fails to eliminate 2009 Dan in the morning of Day 5.

After the failed attempt to eliminate 2009 Dan, Night 5 is actually pretty quiet. But on Day 6, Hiatus Dan sets his sights on the 2009 team again.

This brought us to the final three. 2009 Dan and Revival Phil, who both have no kills so far. And Hiatus Dan, who has brought a hiatus to at least three other Dans/Phils.

I don't have that much faith in either 2009 Dan or Revival Phil, but anything can happen in this simulator.

And on Night 6:

Revival Phil, in a bit of an ironic twist of following lore accuracy, put an end to Hiatus Dan while 2009 Dan actually ended up on fire.

No I am not sorry for that last sentence.

THIS MAKES PHIL THE WINNER OF THE ENTIRE PHANGRY GAMES!

The simulation turned out a lot more dramatic than I have experienced in the past (with the whole underlying Trust/Betrayal Plotline that ended up emerging with the final three) and was so funny to go through.

I've been a part of the phandom since I was fourteen back in 2012, but i've only recently deviated from my lurker ways and started being active in this community on tumblr. which I have been enjoying immensely! I'm super confused about something however, and so i'm making a post about it. please help.

often when I see the word "parasocial" used among the dnp audience, I've noticed that it's used with really negative connotations. Or with the implication that having a parasocial relationship is inherently bad and terrible. today, for instance, I've seen the term parasocial likened directly to "creepy."

I'd like to ask why that is-what has led to the perception of a parasocial relationship in this fandom as one that is intrinsically invasive and creepy. And I'd like also to put forth my own thoughts on why I think it's unhelpful and incorrect that we use this term to be a near synonym for creepy.

first, a definition. I'm turning to Hank Green for this, as he succinctly sums up what a parasocial relationship is in this vlogbrothers video (a recommended watch). He says a parasocial relationship forms "when the parts of your brain that are designed to have a social relationship between you and another person are used to have a relationship with a person who does not know who you are or, sometimes, cannot know who you are... because they're Huckleberry Finn."

At its most basic, a parasocial relationship is a relationship between you and someone fictional or nonfictional who doesn't know who you are. Hank goes on to say, importantly! that parasocial relationships have been happening since the beginning of time. People have been fans of famous or talented people since time immemorial, people have cared for fictional people since the first stories were told among humans.

Similarly, in one of his Am I The Hole videos, Phil says that becoming obsessed with things is normal. "People hyperfixate on stuff. It's fine." We all do it.

In many ways, parasocial relationships are as natural as myriad other forms of human bonds. Humans can't help but connect to each other. To other living and even non-living things. Bonding and connecting and forming communities is what we do. And because of that, I think it's a disservice to oneself be ashamed of being in a parasocial relationship, or to use parasocial as a term to serve as a stand in for a disrespectful fan of someone. I think it fosters a sense of guilt where there shouldn't necessarily be any, especially if you as a viewer of Dan and Phil are respecting the boundaries they have set. You are doing something so normal! So human! You are finding support and comfort and empowerment and motivation and creativity and any number of other things from other people.

There is great joy and great good that can come from parasocial relationships. Obviously! Think of Phil's birthday stream, the feelings you experienced when the lights came on in the theater after TATINOF, all the laughs (among other things) Dan and Phil have gotten from our memes and art.

And it's important to consider the other side of this as well. Dan and Phil also have a parasocial relationship with us. It's different, of course, but they do think of us, make decisions because of us, without truly knowing us. At different points in time maybe they know the loudest of us, a few individuals, but for the most part they do not know who we are. They don't know who you are. But they do think about you. They think about what ties us together, our queerness, our beliefs about the world, the internet, our status as socially awkward and or mentally ill nerds etc. They think about how certain videos or projects or merch will be received. All creators are in a relationship with their audience. And it is often a parasocial one.

Basically i find myself exasperated with stumbling over the word 'parasocial' in this fandom. I want to have the information and know the truth and add my own thoughts! Maybe parasocial is used by other people elsewhere on the internet to mean something bad, but my thesis is this: it's not a bad word. It's a descriptor. And it's a normal thing. Those people are wrong. You shouldn't feel bad about being in a parasocial relationship with Dan and Phil! You should call that relationship what it is with pride! And do as much good with it as you can.

conclusion: talk to me about this! What is your perspective, what am I missing? let me know please. would be happy to talk about this with anyone.

Dan Howell raised me (questionable, but let's go with it) to be a yapper and so I shall never fucking continue to stop yapping how delighted it makes me when DnP engage with us like this.

It might just be because I have never been in a fandom like the phandom before but the mutual teasing and respect and trust between creator and audience is something I hold so dear. It's never been flawless but I would argue at the core of it there's something so sincere, stemming from a place of love.

It's a parasocial relationship, it's not real love like you might think it, but I almost want to argue that it's a version of love, even if it should never be taken to far. There are so many people who adore, appreciate and love Dan and Phil, but I don't think it would be as fun if it wasn't just a smidge reciprocal.

As a whole, they love their audience. In what it has done for them in terms of gaining recognition and fame, but also just all of the shit that we've indirectly helped them with by sticking with them for so long. There is a bond that has been created between us and with the 2023 return of the gaming channel, I feel like they came close again.

They've created us. Sure, part of that is true. I joked about being raised by Dan but the truth isn't that far away from the joke. Him and Phil made me realise a lot of things about myself, through them I found friendships I treasure so deeply and they have inspired me to write so, so much. The person I am today is in part because of those two tall dorks.

But the creation didn't just go one way really. As a collective, their audience helped "create" them too. Creators generally want to share their creations and part of making and sharing something is wanting to see how people react to it. The Dan and Phil we see today? They wouldn't be those people without all of us.

And isn't that a beautiful thing, to leave an impression on each other? To know that in some small part, all of the cool and good work Dan and Phil have been doing, is because of the people who've stuck by them? The dedicated audience who watch and engage right back with at them.

Whether it be showing up to their shows, posting at or about them on social media or watching their videos and other content, all of that contributed to it. They know there's a whole space out there amongst their audience where we just engage with each other.

They also mostly respect that because it's not really a space for them, even if it's partly about them. It's a space for us. But I still love when we both agree to have a little overlap and share what's going on, even if it is "just" silly memes.

rory’s guide to where the howlters might move

i was talking with @underthisweather about this because we both play sims 4 and/or watch simmers that aren’t dan and phil play. there are a lot of people more well-versed in the sims 4 game and the dapg series than i am, but as someone who deliberately bought sims packs to get all the playable worlds, i can at least give it a guess.

i briefly considered making this a tier-list video but i have WAY too much on my plate to wrangle making a template and editing video right now, so quick post it is. i use all the world names, so feel free to look around youtube and other places online if you want to actually see the worlds.

Guidelines

this is all residential worlds, so vacation worlds and secret worlds aren’t being ranked. sorry, batuu (/j).

obviously, willow creek has been their home for a million years, so that’s not in the running, but i’ll talk about it a little bit before we get into the other worlds.

even though i’m not making a tier list video, i am making tiers because it’s fun. they are:

-top contenders: my best guesses for where dil, tabitha, dalien, and nuki land -possible: not my guesses, but also i won’t be completely humiliated if they pick one of these -for the bit: not likely, but if they have a particular joke or personal attachment or storyline in mind, that could keep them in the running -nah: probably not happening

if you want to jump to the end and skip my blathering, that’s where the full tier list will be.

a quick primer as to what we’re talking about here:

-“worlds” are a group of neighborhoods sorted by a general theme or biome or both.

-“neighborhoods” are a group of buildings/spaces grouped into a loose theme. while sims 4 isn’t open world like sims 3, it has wandering spaces between lots that don’t require additional loading that form the connective tissue of the neighborhoods

-“lots” are where specific buildings/houses go. there are a variety of lots: residential, commercial, etc., and they can have specific traits to help or challenges to make things harder, much like you can give sims traits. residential is our main focus here

-each lot has a grid size. 64x64 is huge; 20x15 is a lot smaller.

here’s what they’ve told us about what’s going to happen, pulled directly from the transcript (timestamp):

Phil: We are gonna either build a house from scratch or buy a house, but we're moving. Dan: We're shaking things up. Phil: To a new neighborhood. Dan: The Howlters are getting out of here. Look, it's that time. They lived a whole life. They were ready to retire. They got this three-bedroom massive house. They don't need all of this stuff. Phil: They don't. Dan: They need to start a new life in a new neighborhood now that their gay kids are out of there and they've got an emo and a Shiba Inu to raise. Phil: Yeah. Think about it, though. We're gonna have new neighbors, new friendships, new experiences, new jobs.

generally what we know/can guess:

-prebuilt or custom-built residences are most likely, but they can also bulldoze and build on other kinds of lots without cheats. i summarize the amount of lots each neighborhood has to give you an idea of how many potential neighbors might be around.

-dan is implying they’re going to downsize, so a smaller lot seems likely

-it sounds like dil and tabitha will be getting new jobs? that probably won’t have a ton of impact on the world/lot because jobs are largely “go somewhere else to work and you either can watch or not” or “you work from home but the neighborhood doesn’t have much impact here”. still, good to know

Willow Creek

just wanna give a quick shoutout to willow creek, dil’s home world from the beginning. it’s a base game world, and it’s got a lot of goodies: excellent starter homes, three empty lots (the one they used is a 30x20, which is not as big as they get, but is also not the smallest), notable townies (pancakes family!), a nice park, and a little downtown area. the vibes are distinctly southern USA in biome and architecture

neighborhoods

sage estates: mansions! two residential lots (one occupied by default, one prebuilt empty).

pendula view: historic section, featuring the goths. four lots (three prebuilt, one empty 30x20).

courtyard lane: current home of the howlters and pancakes! in their game, all five lots have houses (shout out to the owl slide).

foundry cove: starter homes. five lots (four prebuilt, one empty 30x20).

crawdad quarter: park, museum, nightclub, gym, library

Oasis Springs

another base game world! VERY deserty, specifically with a slightly palm springs (southern CA, USA) vibe? they have a lot of vague deserts in the sims 4 without actually considering biome too deeply, which i can say because i’m a high-desert queer. anyway.

neighborhoods

acquisition butte: midcentury and kind of mission-style mansions. four residential lots (three prebuilt, one empty 40x30).

skyward palms: two residential lots with mansions.

bedrock strait: the description calls it “delightfully kitschy”. five residential lots (four prebuilt, one empty 30x20).

parched prospect: single-family homes similar to bedrock strait, maybe with less kitsch? five residential lots (four prebuilt, one empty 30x20)

mirage canyon: downtown area, with museum, lounge, park, gym, and bar.

upsides

i wouldn’t call dan and phil desert gays, but irl palm springs is pretty gay! there are a lot of options here to renovate that aren’t giant but aren’t tiny, either. the howlters could get invested in the landgraab drama, if they wanted. the weather is also a lot less rainy than most other words, which means fewer thunderstorms (a big plus for my gameplay, hard to say for them).

downsides

as previously stated, i don’t see dan and phil as desert gays. oasis springs isn’t their architectural style, and emo dalien would probably be miserable (this could be an upside for story reasons, but i’m leaning toward it not working specifically here). plus, oasis springs is an early sims world, and i feel like they’ll go newer for the fun of it.

i deliberated over this one for a second because it’s mostly a no, but i think it’s just possible enough to put in “Possible”. the very bottom, though.

Newcrest

honestly, i’m hesitant to call newcrest a world all its own because it’s basically willow creek without anything in it. there are no preset buildings here, just three neighborhoods with five empty lots.

bridgeview: lots are 2 20x15, 2 30x20, 1 40x30

llama lagoon: lots are 1 30x20, 1 30x30, 2 40x30, 1 50x40

ridgeline drive: lots are 3 30x20, 1 40x20, 1 40x30

upsides

one word: versatility. i play here all the time because it’s easy to make a tiny home (my favorite way to build my sims’ skills) on the smallest lots and build a full town around them, complete with all the houses, neighbors, and lot types you want. for youtubers who are into storytelling, it’s very appealing.

downsides

i honestly don’t see dan and phil as youtubers who want to make their own towns. they could pull from the gallery entirely without taking up too much time, but that feels too stale for their playstyle and personal aesthetics, and i think they want to shake things up more. it wouldn’t even make a good “we said we were moving but we didn’t say it would be different” bit.

the world that came with get together, which we know dan and phil have. quality-wise, it’s one of the best worlds in the whole game: a bunch of lots, beautiful architecture, variety in neighborhoods. it has a real northwestern european vibe.

neighborhoods

windslar: mix of large houses and smaller. six residential lots with one empty 40x30, and a chalet gardens lot, including hedge maze.

olde platz: old downtown of windenburg with a bunch of housing but no empty lots. four residential, bar, library, cafe, nightclub, and an ancient ruins lot.

lykke centre: new downtown of winderburg. park, cafe, gym, nightclub, and a giant pool.

the crumbling isle: rich people on an island! five residential lots with one empty 20x20.

upsides

versatility, but with structure. building a new house on that 20x20 island lot seems very possible to me, but they could take one of the empty prebuilts or evict someone easily. a lot of neighbors to mess with, and a lot of destinations to play in. i visit lykke center’s nightclub and pool in my games all the time.

downsides

not only would i say tudor is not dan and phil’s style (which is a lot of the non-mansion housing), i would say that, despite the slightly more germanic or nordic bent, it might be too familiar in some ways? but the bigger impediment i think is that it isn’t silly enough for their playstyle and doesn’t fit any of the characters. emo dalien probably won’t pub crawl, you know?

the world that came with city living, and dab and evan’s stomping grounds! big city and mostly apartment living.

neighborhoods

spice market: listed as a “family neighborhood”. six apartment units in two buildings, one 30x30 single-family house prebuilt, one karaoke bar.

arts quarter: the “bohemian” neighborhood where the humor and hijinks festival happens. six apartment units, including a penthouse, and an art museum.

fashion district: the “young and trendy” neighborhood where the romance festival and geekcon happen. six apartment units, including a penthouse, and a karaoke bar.

uptown: the “luxurious” neighborhood, with four apartment units, a gym, and a rooftop lounge. the city park’s next to this one.

upsides

we know this is VERY dan and phil because dab and evan already live here (and their place looks like the dnp manchester flat)! it would be very funny if dab’s parents showed up and we saw dnp playing dab like he was constantly annoyed they were cramping his style. i would also enjoy if they demolished the standalone house and built a city-style house like forever home. not that i’m trying to get a house tour by any means possible or anything.

downsides

this isn’t different enough, and that’s why i mostly think it won’t happen. i think it would only happen if dab and evan went elsewhere.

Forgotten Hollow

the world that came with vampires. if you’ve watched this sims series in full, you’ve seen it before. i play in it constantly, but most people aren’t into occult sims like i am or build cemetery lots to keep all their dead sims. for some reason.

there’s also some non-lot space that’s fun to hang out in, like the central park (that isn’t a park lot) and wilderness behind most of the lots

the world that came with dogs and cats (and the first canon gay sim townies)! we know they have it because nuki exists. rainy seaside vibes.

sable square: listed as both the “cultural center” of the world, but as a “monument” to their pets. three residential lots with one empty 30x20, a park with the dog-friendly lot trait, and a vet clinic.

cavalier cove: seaside residential of varying sizes. five residential lots with two empty 30x20s.

whiskerman’s wharf: touristy downtown wharf. three residential lots with one empty 40x30, a bar, and a lounge.

deadgrass isle: island with a museum lot. also has a lighthouse i think you can run around in, but i haven’t tried it.

upsides

if they were doing nuki-focused story or were looking to fill a house entirely with cats and dogs, this would be the place to go. maybe the howlters could have gay friends and live next door to the heckings! dan and phil yelling about the feral/townie cats would be a delight.

downsides

honestly, i’m just not a huge fan of this world. it never runs well on my computer, it rains all the time (which i like in real life, but not the sims), and if i have pets, i’m always in the vet clinic getting that stuff to work. obviously this is a ymmv thing, but i think it’s too bland for dan and phil as well.

i’m gonna put this in “nah” quickly because dab is pursuing the actor career and might come here if he wants fame, but it’s more of a world to visit than live in. i don’t hate it or anything, but there’s few sims to interact with, and it wasn’t well-built. (one of the mansions has no bathrooms!) i think the only potential spoiler here is if dan and phil (mostly dan) wanted an outlet to rant about the entertainment industry, but they can do that without moving to del sol valley.

came with the pack of the same name! this is different than every other world because there’s a built-in narrative about the government and weird behavior, but it also has the neighborhood structure.

secret lab: this is part of the narrative and is a single lot, but it gets its own neighborhood mention because, if you look up the map, it takes up the entire upper left corner.

shady acres: rich part of strangerville. five residential lots with two empty 30x20s.

strangerville plaza: main part of strangerville. four prebuilt residential lots, one library, and one bar.

upsides

honestly, that i have any is going to probably set me apart from any sims player-dapg fan combo. i think the red desert look is nicely different from the willow creek look, the build items are sometime underrated, and dan’s area 51 reference in the latest video could have been a hint. dil has been super close to alien weirdness; might as well follow that to its logical conclusion!

downsides

i don’t actually think dan and phil will do strangerville’s story because they want something a little more different. the richer housing in this world isn’t super well-built, and i can’t imagine them building a trailer in a trailer park for fun (although they should; i enjoy those kinds of build videos a lot).

i’m putting this in “Top contenders” with an asterisk: i don’t think it’ll happen yet, and if/when it does happen, it’ll be because dalien graduated high school and moved to university, which was implied in the latest video to be a likely path for dalien. my understanding is that university plays work better if the students live out of the world, but imagine dan and phil passing up a chance to talk about their uni experiences. i bet dalien will live his conflicted alien life in the dorms, at least to start with.

eco lifestyle’s world! it doesn’t have a strict narrative like strangerville does, but it’s built specifically for residents to vote on community initiatives and with mechanics that change the look depending on how environmentally conscious everyone’s being.

grims quarry: former quarry turned residential neighborhood. three prebuild single-family lots and one apartment lot.

port promise: former industrial port trying to be reclaimed by the community. three prebuilt residential lots, one bar, one community space.

upsides

i honestly think this one has a lot of potential, both in regards to dan and phil’s tastes and storyline options. going from strict scientist toward environmentalist would be a great route for dil, and the household could live in an apartment without being in the city, if they felt like downsizing that much. dan specifically has a reformed nihilist vibe that would go really well here, and dumpster diving/woohooing is a LOT of fun.

downsides

maybe not glamorous enough? dalien would probably hate it, which is not a hard no for me lol. they might want a world with more neighbors to torment, too. i’m also not sure if dan and phil have eco lifestyle, are interested, or even really know about it.

yukimatsu: mountain peak with ski slopes! two rental lots, one onsen bathhouse, and one empty residential 50x50.

senbamachi: old part of town. three prebuilt residential lots, one bar, one park.

upsides

look, it’s japan. dan and phil like japan (to put it mildly) and this pack melds older style with modern luxury real well. the builds are really solid as well; this was around the time when the sims team got simmers involved in making buildings, and it makes a big difference. the one time i played with dan and phil sims, they lived in mt. komorebi.

downsides

the combination of sports and vacation makes this a bit less likely as a moving destination, i think.

rockridge heights: the high school gets its own two-part neighborhood, divided into a high school building for regular school gameplay and an auditorium for things like prom, graduation, and a job fair.

prescott square: downtowny area. three prebuilt residential lots, one library, one thrift and bubble tea store (random, but high school years comes with thrifting as a money-making opportunity for teens).

plumbite cove: waterside area. three residential lots, including one empty 20x20, one rental, and one park, but my favorite part is the rabbit hole amusement park (you don’t get to see anyone go on the rides, but it’s a common afterparty destination).

upsides

if you ask me, this is the most likely neighborhood for howlter relocation! they specifically referenced high school years as dalien’s next stop, there’s a small empty lot to build on, it’s one of the newer sims expansions, and it’s different enough from willow creek to make it interesting while not reinventing the wheel. the social opportunities for dalien will be big! even if they don’t move here, we’re definitely going to see it a lot.

downsides

i do think dan and phil’s tastes have gotten more upscale over the years, so they outgrew willow creek, and copperdale might be a little quaint/small for them, too. doesn’t change the fact that dil and tabitha still have a teen.

i’ll be honest, i thought san sequoia was a slam dunk when i was conceptualizing this post. but now that i’ve gone through all the other worlds, i think it’s honestly too young for the howlters. dalien is not splash pad age, for sure. i think it’s still a solid contender, but i would be a bit surprised if it gets picked.

i just wanna say how unbelievably excited i am for this WAD livestream today! i have been watching dan (and phil) since i was 12 or 13 and im 22 now so literally just about a decade 💀 im a proud hiatus survivor and i genuinely couldnt be prouder of dan (and phil but this isnt about him). daniel grew up in front of my eyes while i was growing up too and i know its super parasocial to feel this way but watching his journey really did help me through mine. i remember crying when he came out, when he went on his first tour alone, and when the gaming channel came back because they were BOTH ready this time. his entire channel has really been my comfort, always there when i need it. while im still growing and there are still some parts of myself im not quite ready to deal with, ive come so far and honestly dan and phil have both helped me through this journey more than i think any of the three of us realize. i know im very fortunate to be able to afford this ticket and be able to watch this, i absolutely recognize that. i remember begging my parents when him and phil came to the US for their first and second tours, and then i was broke af when dan came for WAD, i just knew i owed it to my inner teen to do this for myself since im able. okok done with the sappyness now, all of this to say i am really excited and i think theres a high likelyhood im gonna cry during this livestream. dan is so many things you wouldn't guess if you just watch one video. There's the cynical persona that I find endearing personally. But he's also a giant sap. He can't commit supposedly yet he lives in his forever home w his soulmate. He's so wild and young and ready to experiment (maybe he is, I'm just speculating) yet he seems to be way more of a jealous person (sometimes I know he's joking but other times I'm like dan???) than I would've guessed for someone with a partner like phil who spends all his time with him.

that's the gemini in him, baby! jk i dont know anything about astrology, but yeah, dan contains so many multitudes, i think a maybe somewhat big part is due to how he presents himself on camera and how he navigates that

i think he thinks and maybe probably overthinks a lot about how be presents himself on camera, he has a very specific and well established dan howell brand and vibe, and i think there are a lot of parts of him that dont fit neatly into the brand because firstly, the brand/persona, no matter how authentic it is, can never be his 100% true self like obviously it exaggerates some traits of his while downplaying others, and secondly, he has undergone so so so much growth and change in his time on youtube, and i can imagine it's hard to seamlessly evolve the brand/persona with his truest inner self seamlessly without any 'lag' time

and because dan is dan, at his core, he really is allergic to being fake and can't help but be authentic, and is not good at lying and such, things bleed through the persona/brand that he might not always mean to, leading to a certain level of disconnect/contradiction

also, just being a existential philosophical guy, i'm sure there are a lot of things that he has thought about and thinks about where he contradicts himself and he knows it too. like in my own personal study of philosophy, i know i've encountered a lot of things that emotionally i want to believe, but philosophically/logically i don't really believe, or vice versa, things that emotionally i dont want to believe, but philosophically/logically i think they probably are actually true, and if you're in the stage of thinking through an idea like this, it really feels like somehow holding two contradictory beliefs at the same time

(on the jealousy thing, my toxic trait is that i relate so hard, like i know part of it is joking/hamming it up for fun, but i really do think there's something there and i get it, i'm also an irrationally jealous person, and i get jealous in situations i 100% know i shouldnt and with people who i logically know i am completely secure in my relationship with them, and i do my best to not actually impact how i act, but i cant deny the feeling is there

i think part of it is because how Much dnp are to each other, like they really are each other's everything and each other's Person, i think if you combine that depth and importance of a relationship with a personality that may already be prone to jealousy, i can definitely see how that would lead to like jealousy x100 if one were to feel, even if irrationally, that something is encroaching on your relationship with your Person)

i wasn't alienated, so i can only point own differences and traits (??) that weren't balanced out right away by either Phil or Dan himself. in dd videos Dan is ruder than usual and it feels less like banter. like, he is purposefully rude, loud, mean, annoyed, and offensive in a way. and if usually, you understand that it's not real because Dan either laughs or his "collaborator" laughs genuinely or gets on board and plays along – here it wasn't like that? or it wasn't like that always. during dd he was saying stupid and harmless things but the delivery was like he was punching someone with his words. gladly, Dan is a bad actor, so it was just awkward most of the time (at least to me), and that indicated that he was just fucking around and all of these is his weird concept of satire. there was a "i don't really wanna be here" vibe sometimes. some topics of the videos were purposefully boring and their point was to show that youtube is full of recycled content and there is so little originality on the platform? (allegedly! this is one of my understandings). he definitely tried to explain the whole big concept of dd somewhere, i just don't remember where (probably in a liveshow), and video descriptions can be very telling as well. also, he was using his fandom A LOT. we were giving him content, 45% of dd is phandom-based videos. it can weird people out, i can understand that. i'm not a huge fan of all these twitter screenshots and Dan reading them out loud. but as a part of a bigger concept i can let it slide.

anyway, for me it felt a bit disingenuous. like he would rather do anything else or nothing at all than dystopia daily. but his "annoyed at everyone and everything" dd persona fit into that. so i'm not mad it exists. it's a fucking concept and a half. and it's so funny to look at it and not take it seriously. there were good, cute and genuinely funny moments. just, the whole thing still feels like it was a challenge to youtube. and like he wanted to bait people. i don't know, i haven't rewatched any of the videos. my thoughts are based on memories.

i think in the beginning Dan was like: am i doing what i want to do (and there's no budget around); am i doing what youtube algorithm wants from me?; or am i doing what the audience wants? and he tried to create a piece of content that fit all three categories, and create it very fast. and that's why dd was such a roller coaster.

“He’s doing what?” Three of you shout together— well, you and Dan shout, Jake maintains his calmness even now.

“Does he not understand her condition right now?” Jake adds. And you feel the tension in him. The emotions that are trying to escape but don't manage to. His worry and concern regarding Hannah. You feel envious of how he doesn't hide his concern for Hannah.

“I know. You should talk to him, Jake. He's sort of scared of you ever since you shut him up for asking Amelia to go to the mine.” Lilly says hopefully.

Jake considers it for a second then: “Alright. I’ll do it. But I don't have his number saved.” He waves his phone, helplessly.

You take yours and unlock it. “Here. Take mine.”

Jake looks at you and nods. He types Thomas' name in the search bar with one hand and you find it so hot. His hands are as pretty as any other part of his body. Before hitting the call icon, Jake asks, “Is it fine if I go there?” He points towards an empty corner.

“Sure."

You still find it hard to communicate with him normally. Like you didn't just call everything between you two as a stupid crush a couple of hours ago.

You watch him as he takes slow steps while talking. His mouth is definitely moving but you don't hear a single word that leaves his mouth. Lilly goes to kitchen to keep the dishes. And Dan also excuses himself and starts watching TV in the loving room which is just to your left.

You remain sitting at the table because that's the only place from where you can stare at Jake. Since he's busy on the phone, you finally have time to take him in. And wow. If you hadn't fell for him over texts, you certainly would have by appearance. He's tall and despite all his problems, you believe he takes time out for work out. Currently, he’s wearing a black hoodie and grey sweatpants.

He suddenly sighs and looks above, resting his one hand in pocket. And you need to stop looking at him because these little things are making your heart skip. You got a long way to get over this man.

He pulls the phone back and looks at the screen, clearly annoyed by something. Maybe your notification. He goes back to talking and after a few minutes, he again pulls the phone away looking at the screen. When it happens the third time, he types something and goes back to talking. He might have answered someone's text in your place and you find it hard to believe that you don't mind at all.

When he’s finally done talking, he doesn't go to Lilly or Dan. He comes straight to you. He stands in front of you and offers your phone back. He says, “I talked to him. He won’t do it.” You nod and reach your hand out to take your phone back but the phone beeps and Jake pulls it back slightly, looking at the screen. You can't clearly see his face since he's looking down but he definitely made a face.

He offers your phone back to you. “Phil kept texting so I replied. And he certainly doesn't like my reply.” You take the one back and Jake sitting on Dan’s place. Beside you.

You open the texts.

Phil: Hey, I know we just ran into eachother, like what, two hours ago? But I couldn't help it.

Phil: So what brings you to Duskwood?

Phil: Are you ignoring me?

Me: Yes. So take a hint for once and leave her alone.

When Jake said he replied, you thought he meant he replied as you. But he replied as a third person. As him.

Phil: Who’s this?

You were certainly aware that Jake is looking at you or your phone at the moment, but when you turn towards him, he looks away, as if he is not interested. So you turn your attention back to your phone and so does Jake.

Me: Hey. I am sorry. Some asshole messed with my phone.

Phil: Just tell me the name. I know a lot of people here. I can help you get rid of him, Lia.

You heard Jake snort beside you. You can’t resist and look at him. “What is your problem?”

“Lia? Seriously? That's the best nickname he could come up with? I am disappointed.” No, you don't look disappointed. You look jealous. You wanted to say. But didn't.

“At least, he can give nicknames. Some people are just annoying when they use actual—”

“Amy.”

You suddenly can't form words. You look at him blankly but inside you are fighting a smile.

“That’s much better, isn't it?” He asks as leans back in the chair. He face is closer this way.

“No, yeah.” You say just for the sake of it.

He raises his eyebrow. He does it a lot. “Is that a yes or a no?” His voice becomes low and you feel it surrounding you from all directions.

“Yes.” Desperately, it leaves you. “I'll suggest this to Phil.”

Layers form on Jake's forehead. “No. You won't.”

“You want him to continue calling me Lia, then?” You ask.

Jake looks away. Then looks back at you. “I don't want him to call you anything. And if it is still not obvious to you then I'll say it. I don't even want him to call you or text you. And certainly not call you with a nickname I gave you.”

You can feel it when your heart skips a beat and then starts beating faster. You want to scream. He can't be with you and at the same time, he says things like this. You are not sure if you should confront him about this unfairness or just let your guard fall down and continue talking to him.

Your silence makes him realise it too as he sighs and looks away.

“I am sorry.” He says not looking at you. His hand on the table is turned into a tight fist. “I got distracted.” Then he sighs and looks at you again. “I don't mind if you move on. I’d prefer it but please, slowly.”

Your hand finds his on the table and you squeeze it. “Jake, we don't have to move on. If it's that hard to move on then let's not. Let's try. I know it will be hard too, maybe twice as hard but that's a price I can pay and I will. I just need you stop running.”

Jake’s hand turns and holds yours tighter. He’s not looking at you now but at your connected hands.

“This feels amazing.” He says, lifting your hand a bit. There's a small sad smile on his lips.

“I know.” You agree. “And I don't want to let go.”

He then looks at you. His gaze showing immense amount of emotions, almost impossible to take in. “Neither do I.” But then he's shaking his head. “But I need time, Amelia, a lot of it. To figure everything out. I certainly can't keep running with you around. I don't want you to go through that.”

Your other hand caresses his shoulder lightly. You nod, once, twice. Understanding. “You need time? I got a lot of it.”

He wears a painful expression. “You can't keep waiting for me.”

You laugh without humour. “Oh, try me."

His chest moves up then down. “If I develop a habit of you, I won't ever let you go.” He says it as if it's a bad thing. His thumb rubs against your skin.

“I am offended that you haven't already developed a habit of me.” The tension, the sadness was too much so you try to ease it. It works.

A full smile forms on Jake's lips. “I have. I can't go on with my day without thinking of you. And sometimes, you are all I think of. It's an illness, really."

A proud smile occurs on your face. “An illness? Then I want you to be forever sick of it.”

“I think I want to kiss you." He says. His eyes becoming a darker shade of green. His eyes on your lips then eyes. Just like he did earlier in the room before kissing you.

“Oh, I think you do.”

I SEE PEOPLE sharing how they got into the dip and pip phandom and I want to participate

I was first and foremost a pinterest girlie. The typical oh my parents won't let me have any form of social media except pinterest oh oh no boy little did they know all the internet shenanigans ends up there it's objectively the best place to "culture" yourself or "acclimatise" for the internet or something

Like, really, it's all content from all the apps compiled for YOU according to the humour YOU like it's amazing

Anyways going off topic .. I have intense FOMO so I obviously started to educate myself on all things internet

One day whilst idly browsing pinterest I happened on pictures of dnp from a tumblr post I don't remember what the post itself was but probably something phan but I didn't know that at the time and I immediately went and checked who they were because I must know and google said they're two British youtubers people ship together and I said okay cool and just left it at that

A month or two later they happened onto my pinterest again and my brain said hey you've had a pretty well curated for you page all things we like so maybe check em out see how it goes probably something we like so I said ok bet and I did and I watched a video of them I think pinof 4 and I was like okay these guys are super random they're funny but I don't get half the things they reference

But then the youtube gods saw my destiny and said this is your fate child and starting recommending it to me all the time

So I gave in and I watched them and they were amazing, healing and wonderful and they really really helped me

Especially like BIG and dans monologue about gender and sexuality really resonated with me cause I didn't really think about this before but I realised I actually agreed with him that gender is baseless but that rant is for another time

And phil, loveliest dearest funniest phil, whenever I was having a hard time he'd been there cheering me up

That was such a freaking wonderful video, and worth all of the waiting and internal hype we’ve all had about it. I cannot believe they did this again, and did it so damn well. I feel like I’ve not really processed at all. The outfits that Phil chose were all so freaking good? Like a mix of cool, silly and funny, but what really sold me was the reactions to everything.

They are just so damn fond and funny together and even with Phil off camera almost all of the time, you never for a second doubt his presence because Dan’s eyes are always always looking at him and his reaction first and foremost. He’s filming content for his viewers sure, but the two of them are also just goofing around and allowing us all to join in.

It’s like we were sitting next to Phil and giggling with him, as he showed our suggestions and “made” Dan dress up. It felt like grabbing a snack, and sitting shoulder to shoulder with a friend while making another friend do stupid shit just for the hell of it. And bursting out into laughter together with them both.

I lost count of how many times they laughed, how many times I laughed. I can’t even tell you how many times I had to pause the video and take a minute to just live in this happy and giddy space before I continued.

They are so silly, so gay, so confident, so at ease. It’s such a pleasure to watch, and it makes me want to go right back and watch it again, after finishing.

I also love that we got Dan in not one but three skirts! The fact that he teased it after the nun costume thing, but I was not expecting so many skirts! And he looked good! (except in that last abomination). And the furry outfit being revenge for the cheese dress was such a funny bit. To think how far they’ve come since Phil’s first viewers pick my outfits! That was five years ago and it feels both like ages ago and like it could have been last week.

Dan’s reaction to anything with colour in it was so damn funny, we know he’s a monochrome boy but he does look great in colour. That soft boye outfit looked good on him, fight me. And all the damn accessories and shoes too! Even though they got actually hurled at his head. Incredible miracle that no one ended up blinded.

Also Phil having to go behind the curtain and help him with the ear ring! Like honestly just all of the ways Phil was both cheering him up from the sidelines while roasting him. They wouldn’t be who they are without their banter.

And Dan actually looking confident in some of the outfits and clearly liking what he was seeing, aesthetic or not. I was also reminded entirely too much of how tall and long he is, like so much torso and legs. We often see him sitting, or camera focused midriff up, so full length Dan is always a bit of a shock.

I just know this video will be one that I come back to whenever I need a laugh and to be reminded of how fond I am of these two tall British dorks. Truly an astounding and worthy addition to the Viewers Pick Outfit series!
