When Emma falls in love, she paces the floor, closes the blinds, and locks the door.

Beth isn’t freaking out. She’s not. Freaking out would be bad, which is why she’s not freaking out.

Her phone sits on her dining table, taunting her.

Okay. She’s freaking out a little bit.

When Emma falls in love, she calls up her mom. Jokes about the ways this one could go wrong.

Mom and Dad come back from date night to see Beth pacing the floor. They send each other a look.

“Dear,” Mom called. “Is everything alright?”

Yeah, she almost lied. Then thought better of it. They can most likely help and it’d be nice to get the words out there—especially because she’s never said them before.

“I like Rick.”

She waits and takes her time cause Little Miss Sunshine always thinks it’s gonna rain.

Dad and Mom stare before laughing a bit.

“Beth. We could’ve told you that.” Dad said.

“Huh?”

Mom nodded. “We see the way you two look at each other.”

“Mom. Rick doesn’t like me like that.”

“Except he does.” Dad said.

“Alright, Beth. Start talking.” Courtney said as she and Yolanda set their trays down on the lunch table.

“Rick doesn’t have a crush on me.” Beth said, for what felt like the hundredth time.

She walked out of the cafeteria.

Emma met a boy with eyes like a man,

Rick and Beth met in 3rd grade but didn’t really meet until freshman year of high school.

Beth sits at the table alone when Jack and Simon, two football players approached.

“Hey, Chapel. All here alone. Are your imaginary friends busy?”

Beth ignored them and kept eating. They didn’t leave and then a third person approached.

Rick Harris sat down and glared at the two football players until they ran away.

Beth smiled and Rick just looked at her.

Turns out her heart fits right in the palm of his hand.

Rick found her in the library.

“Hey. You ran away before I got to the table and you left your lunch.”

“Oh. Thanks.”

They sat together.

Now he’ll be her shelter when it rains,Little does he know his whole world is about to change.

“Beth.”

“Yes.”

“Would you maybe want to, maybe…”

“Pick me up at 7.”

Rick smiled and Beth smiled.

Yeah, between me and you. Sometimes I wish I was her.
