Hi Grace!! What did you think of S4?

OMFG EVELYN I LOVE YOU SO MUCH HELLO I AM SO EXCITED TO TALK ABOUT S4!!!

So *claps hands* here's the thing. I loved s4 and it had some incredibly special moments and conversations that I think are so important in media. Here is an exhaustive list of storylines/moments I loved, in no particular order: Fabiola saying fuck it to the Ivies and going to an HBCU, all the model UN conflicts and Devi and her friends handled them, the model UN in general I loved this season, Devi having a little bit of fun with Ethan, Devi and Paxton finally closing the door, Paxton finally letting go of high school and figuring out the best career path for him, Ms. Thompson being beautiful stunning and amazing, Trent proposing to Eleanor in the worst possible way, Devi realizing that she might burn out in college and she and Ben comforting each other, Nirmala serving sassy line after sassy line, Dr. Ryan admiring how far she had made in her progress and Devi leaping across the room to hug her, Nalini telling Devi that it wasn't that she didn't believe in her, it was just that she knew life was unfair because of her experience immigrating to the U.S., Devi saying "Sorry you came to America for nothing" when Devi didn't get into college, Devi's college essay about her Dad, Devi's connection to Princeton BECAUSE of her Dad, Devi screaming you're not real to the imagined figure of her Dad and Nalini coming in and comforting her, Nirmala telling Nalini that she was lashing out at Devi because she didn't want her to leave, the final Nalini/Devi scene, Kamala's storyline about being afraid to be away from her family, Devi's final prayer scene, Eleanor realizing she didn't want to be like her deadbeat mom (fuck Joyce) and going to prom with her girls!, Ben and Devi in the final episode!

Now here are what I had issues with:

The BIGGEST issue I had with this season was with Ben and Devi's storyline. It felt like stalling to me. No, it was stalling to me. Because basically the writers said, oh, okay Devi is ready to go and is In Love with Ben and want to be with him. They should have just gotten them together because at that point, Ben had admitted he didn't want Devi to go and confessed to her that he liked her at Paxton's graduation, but nooooo they added all this stupid conflict on Ben's end that made absolutely no sense. I would have been FINE if they had touched on Ben being afraid to be hurt by Devi again, because he cheated on her in the past, etc. etc. Or at least explained why he said what he did in the parking lot, why he chose to stop talking to her, etc. But nope! They just moved past it, no explanation.... okay??? Then what was the point of that? And where did the "insecure and too competitive" comment even come from? It made no sense. And I maintain it was a dick move to ignore her after they slept together, I don't care about the intent, I care about the impact, and it was an awful thing to do to Devi.

I really liked the scenes they had of Ben and Devi together, but there weren't enough of them. And they were all scenes of them being so sincere, and in my opinion, there wasn't enough hyper-specific Ben and Devi banter/snark. Everything between them was very sweet, which I somewhat enjoyed, but it was missing that special Ben and Devi sauce. I feel like the entire season was riding on knowledge of their dynamic from previous seasons, rather than their actual conversations/interactions in the present. They never really spoke about their issues, and all their conversations were just them supporting each other. Again, fine, but like I was craving more complexity I guess?

My last gripe with D/B people are going to come for me but while I loved them in the final episode, and I love the Mindy Kaling style of rom coms, their love confession felt a little generic to me and I felt like I had seen it watching other Mindy Kaling shows. Again, I wish there was more hyper-specificity, like saying I love you in their graduation speech shading each other, or going on their Cheesecake Factory date, or going to Malibu for some reason. I love they broke back the model UN sign, for instance. I did love that they rode the scooter to Ben's house, and people paralleled it with Mohan and Nalini, but I didn't really understand the significance of the scooter other than that? This is me being extra picky just because the show is so good because Maitreyi and Jaren's acting was stunning in the entire episode.

I didn't like Margot. She was mean to Devi, and to Ben, and I would have been fine if they cut her out.

Andres was cute and I was happy Nalini was happy but he underwhelmed me, especially because I loved Dr. Jackson.

Aneesa served in every scene she was in, but there wasn't enough of her. There also wasn't enough of Trent! And I think of Eleanor as one of the funniest characters, but honestly she didn't really have many funny lines this season?? Fabiola cracked me up though.

Also the outfits didn't really hit for me this season? Every single one of Devi's outfits ate in s2 and s3 but I was underwhelmed in season 4 with them. Again, I'm being PICKY.

Overall, I really enjoyed the season and it was really emotional for me. But idk for some reason I feel like it kind of had this forgettable quality to me and I am not sure why. It could be because I didn't get everything I wanted (particularly from Ben and Devi). I honestly would have been fine if season 3 was the last one because I thought it was PERFECT and s4 ruined that image of perfection for me. Still, there was so much that I love and the series and characters will always have a special place in my heart.

i honestly..... don't think i can? that's such a cop out, i'm sorry, but this fandom truly is overflowing with talent, i don't think i could narrow it down to three. i'm very bad at maintaining my ao3 bookmarks (and have kinda fallen behind on reading lately too lol, i've been so busy). but the LS fic writer community on here is so special to me and full of some of the best fics i've ever read, i don't think you can go wrong.

overused by me and properly used by everyone else no but i love said. i think it is underused because i feel like we all get given those 'words to use other than said' sheets in school and made to feel like it's a bad word to use when it really isn't. switching out said with other options often feels inauthentic to me because it's clear the person wanted to use said but felt like they couldn't and i hate it. said is good! it's an entirely fine dialogue tag and i think we should all feel less bad about using it

99. was being a writer a dream of yours when you were little? or did it spring up when your older? or is it just a hobby? 

it was def a dream! i've wanted to be a writer since i was 10. i don't know what it was back then, but it's just felt so natural to me, growing up, something creative and challenging and just... fun. i loved not being bound to any kind of restriction, not really having any rules, just being able to create and do what i wanted, it's always felt so free. kinda don't know who i'd be without it.

top 5 Kurtana scenes?

Oh hell yeah. No particular order just the five that I currently dig the most.

2x20 Teen gay, you may proceed to next checkpoint without fear of violence

Apart from the pure comedy of Naya delivering her lines, I love this scene because it's the only one we get from them in this whole Santana's scheming and prom storyline. I love that Santana is being ridiculous and OTT and Kurt just rolls his eyes, I love that he knows that the whole Karofsky apologizing thing was her plot (without knowing her true intentions) and I love that he refers to her as Lady Macbeth earlier on. I think this is the dynamic we should have gotten from them in high school: Kurt exasperated but begrudgingly respecting Santana's cunning, and growing to realize that she's just a huge dork terrified of the world. There's also the interesting dynamic of Santana being responsible for bringing Kurt back to McKinley; yes, it was for selfish reasons, but she got results. And I think Kurt appreciated that in a utilitarian sort of way. (Side note but I think it's funny that I've seen this whole get-Kurt-back-to-McKinley scheme of Santana's be referred to as both the best thing she's ever done and the worst. Girl has range I guess.)

5x03 The Quarterback post-If I Die Young

Obviously. It's just such a good scene for them, and with The Quarterback everything should be treated on a different level imo because this was the actors mourning too. But still, this is also Kurt and Santana and such a tender moment between the two that shows how familiar they are with each other. Kurt knows what's a front and what's her real kindness coming through and encourages her to embrace that, even when Santana can't fully bring herself to be vulnerable even with someone she's been living with for months. He, in turn, offers his understanding.

4x17 watching The Facts of Life together

There's something so cozy and wholesome about this short scene before Rachel comes back to the loft. First off, Kurt made her a girlfriend pillow! And just the idea of them watching TV together and Santana lowkey shipping characters and just being so soft and roommate-y. For some reason I think this is the scene that really shows them being equals, just friends hanging out.

3x11 Auntie Snixx

Michael is such a good episode for Santana's hardcore friend ways. She notices Kurt sulking in a classroom and comes to the rescue, hearing him out and agreeing to do things in a non-violent and not sinking-to-their-level kinda way. And then she taped it to her underboob! A genius not appreciated in her own time.

5x08 Feliz Navidad

This is a small one but again it's just wholesome when Santana shows up in NY and gives Kurt loads of presents that show that she listens to him and cares. I know know PUC isn't canon all that, but still this is pre-Bushwick Santana choosing to spend her holidays with Hummelberry.

Not a specific scene but as a bonus I also appreciated how Kurt could have easily just taken Rachel's side during the feud but he kept a level head and believed Santana didn't have bad intentions, which is super important for her. She still escalated things because of how Rachel reacted but Kurt believed her and for a while there it was just the two of them in the loft.

What's your ideal Benvi reunion/kiss scene?

Honestly a huge part of me loves the idea of Ben showing up for Mohan's birthday again and Devi tackling and kissing him, but I also just love the idea of Devi throwing a school competition because Ben's parents actually CAME for once and Ben confronts her about it and she confesses how much she cares for him. If Des and Devi try dating, I also don't mind *but don't love* the idea of them not working out because she just doesn't have the feelings/history she has with Ben and then Ben showing up on her front porch and them kissing. Technically I think Devi should pull some kind of romantic gesture for Ben but I honestly love when Ben shows up for Devi and gives her the love she deserves <3

Hmm okay I feel like it's a tough question bc I truly feel like nearly every Pezberry moment is underrated. Cause again there's only like 3 bitches in the fandom today so they aren't getting the buzz they deserve :/ Which sux but oh well. So I’m just gonna name some smaller moments that I can think of

Santana looking at Rachel (twice!) during Silly Love Songs. When Rachel is watching Kurt and smiling at him, Santana is glancing over at Rachel and smiling at her. Also when Blaine sings “sometimes [love] doesn’t come at all” to Santana, she immediately turns to look at Rachel

Santana looking at Rachel during Burt and Carole’s wedding. Honestly this whole list could just be Santana staring at Rachel at various times. But Burt says in his vows “You’re everything and I will love you til the day I die” and it cuts to Rachel crying then Santana staring sadly at her. I mean you can say she was looking at Finn. You can be wrong, it’s okay <3 

Rachel dreaming about Santana seeing her naked in 5x17. Maybe not the most serious moment but damn, is it ever fruity. And also funny

Santana picking out earrings for Rachel. Bc apparently she knows Rachel, her wOrSt EnEmY, better than Flop, her actual boyfriend, does

Rachel encouraging Santana in 4x20. First, complimenting her talent and saying Santana is one of the most talented people she knows. Calling her voice “electric” and saying she wished she could be as good a dancer as Santana. And urging her to nurture those talents and feed her artistic soul and all that good stuff. Sometimes Rachel’s pep talks come off as forced just so they can make Rachel seem nicer lmao. But this one felt genuine and it’s just really sweet and a good scene

not gonna lie i feel like queer quinn is the only ND queer headcanon that actually has some weight to it.

headcanoning everyone else as queer is fun but quinn is the only one where the story all but says she was sapphic (and we know that the writers liked to queerbait with faberry, so this isn't a coincidence or fans reading too deep into things, it was an intentional move by the show's part).

I think Quinn is by far, faaar the strongest case for sure. Much to my chagrin, even with her we can't truly state that she's canonically queer, but I've actually just been thinking about how a queer reading is intertwined with her character. Might write that down, sounded like a proper meta in my head!

I totally agree that the queerbaiting, at the very least in season 3 and more obviously by lampshading in season 6, was intentional. Even without Faberry, Quinn just has such a queer story - which was unintentional, I'm sure, but that doesn't change the fact. I know straight!Quinn people like to argue that she outright says this whole ~gay stuff~ isn't for her, but I don't think that's a very convincing argument when she follows up that "no homo" moment with an immediate round two with Santana. Sure girly, you're saying one thing but doing another. And in this case, doing your best frenemy.

People can headcanon whatever they'd like of course and I can see where a lot of them come from, but Quinn is the only not-already-confirmed-queer ch I wholeheartedly believe is queer. The writers never cared enough about her to explore that, let's be honest, but she's like the strongest case for a queer HC I've ever seen.
