Regulus scoffed. “Is that supposed to make me pity you?”

“No,” Sirius shook his head and then stopped moving. The sword in his hand was laid to rest in the burnt grass. He straightened his back with arms out wide. A surrender. “It’s so you believe me.”

Across the way, Regulus snarled and clenched his fists. Even from this distance, Sirius could see the rage building. “Why should I believe you? You lied to me! You were dead!”

“That’s what Mother wanted you to think. It’s what she wanted to happen.”

“She wouldn’t try to kill her own son!”

“Then what is she doing to you?!” Sirius roared, all that repressed childhood anger bubbling over after years of being forcefully covered up. “Torturing you? Mind controlling you? She’s hurting you just like she did me! It’s a slow death, Regulus. So slow you don’t even see it for yourself! She’s blinded you!”

“LIAR!” Regulus’ hand lashed out and Sirius grunted, head snapping to the left as a deep burning erupted in his cheek and jaw. He smelt blood, then felt it trickling down his neck. Three long, deep scratches were left behind. Even Regulus looked stunned at what he had done.

“You can harm me all you want, Reg. I won’t fight back.” Sirius told him, turning to look him in the eye. Regulus went pale.

Yet fear was the last emotion he would have ever thought he would ever feel. And here he was, looking at a reflection of his own mental state in his tiny human, a whispered “demon” escaping his mouth. 

Mobei-Jun didn’t fear humans. No, they feared him. But why was he so scared at his human’s frightened expression? Laying in their bed, clenching the crumpled sheets of silk in front of his chest, wearing the failed endowment gifts because he simply forgot humans had different traditions when it came to courting. It’s been a while since Qinghua was scared of him. Understandable, in hindsight, after learning how delicate humans can be. He didn’t want his human to end up like Junshang’s. 

Possession, it must be, the demon king concluded, because there was no way in all of the demon realms that Qinghua would ever look at him with such terror hidden in his eyes. He must go test his human at once.
