MORE NAMES TO KNOW
Tina Bell: frontwoman of the band Bam Bam, often called the Godmother of grunge because of its influence. Racism within the scene has led to her influence being pretty extensively erased but her bandmate and lifelong friend Scotty Buttocks has been working hard to counteract that by doing press and preserving their music here. Kurt fucking Cobain was their roadie
Betty Davis: 70s funk rock legend who just recently passed away. Incredibly unique performer that was way ahead of her time. Not to be confused with Bette Davis.
Sistah Grrrl Riots: A black punk collective put together in response to alienation and racism in the 90s punk and riot grrrl scenes. Organized by legends Tamar-Kali Brown, Honeychild Coleman, Maya Glick, and Simi Stone. You can read more about sistah grrrl in this article.
Ronnie Spector: Frontwoman of the Ronettes and rock n roll pioneer. Black girl groups were a huge influence on the sound of Rock n Roll as we know it from The Beatles to Led Zepplin to the Rolling Stones. She recently passed but her autobiography came out last year and it's worth the read.

Flyer for the first Sista Grrrl Riot. Photo by Honeychild Coleman, 1997.
*Exerpt taken from the article "Sista Grrrl: The Feminist Mother of Afro-punk" written by Taiwo Adebowale on the Catalyst*
"In the late 90s, Tamar Kali-Brown, Simi Stone, Honeychild Coleman, and Maya Sokora met up and created the Sista Grrrl Riots in response to the Riot Grrrl movement. Unlike the previous movement, the Sista Grrrl Riots were made by black women for black women. Many former Riot Grrrls attended sold-out shows at popular clubs such as Brownies and CBGB. The voices of the ignored were reverberated by the Sista Grrrls. Distorted guitars, bombastic drums, and the voices of female punks were amplified through the shows. This counterculture liberated black female punks from restricting their self-expression. The Sista Grrrl Riots created a community that challenged the notion that punk is reserved for those who are white. As Riot Grrrls, these women were rarely heard, but as Sista Grrrls, their sound and statement spilled out of venues and changed punk forever."
some sista grrrl riot songs or those inspired by the movement that you can check out🖤

I'm curious, do you have any opinions on Skunk Anansie, The Muslims, or Honeychild Coleman?
And in regards to X-Ray Spex (and you may have answered this before), do you prefer Conscious Consumer or Germfree Adolescents? Personally I think Conscious Consumer is probably better on a technical level but I definitely like Germfree Adolescents more.
Sorry, I know that was a lot of questions.
You have really good taste in music.
bout to go to bed so forgive me if im not totally on the ball!
im not familiar with skunk anansie, ill definitely be adding them to my listen list! i already listen to and love the muslims, big fan of their stuff! i havent personally listened to anything by honeychild coleman though i am familiar with her since shes one of the organizers of the sista grrl riots alongside tamar-kali brown and others. i have listened to some of tamar-kali browns work though, and i do like her stuff!!
as for my choice between conscious consumer and germfree adolescents, i definitely spend more time with germfree adolescents but thats probably because i didnt download conscious consumer and its not on spotify. i need to make sure i listen to it again!! i prefer germfree but i dont think its a fair fight bc of that lol.
also thank you so much!!! <3

Not "all girls" to the front.
Featured in the last collage is Sista Grrrl Riots, a punk band featuring Tamar Kali-Brown, Simi Stone, Honeychild Coleman, and Maya Sokora. Sista Grrrl was created in response to the dominance of whiteness within the Riot Grrrl scene. They amplified the voices of black women, contributed greatly to the Afro-punk scene, and made space for the inclusion of marginalized coloured women within this scene.
In terms of representation online (visually), there is little to be found on Sista Grrrl Riots, in comparison to the Riot Grrrl movement which appears to generate endless content online...
This is representative of how white-washed the early days of feminism were -- who received the most attention, and who is still revered as revolutionary for women's liberation to this day.

Talkhouse Launches Talkhouse Reader
Tumblr media
Usually, I write about podcasts. Today, I'm writing about a new print and digital publication produced by a podcast network.
Talkhouse Network's slate of podcast series includes the hit show How Long Gone, Alison Roman's Solicited Advice, That's How I Remember It with Craig Finn, Santigold's Noble Champions and Kimbra's Playing With Fire, as well as Listening, and Björk: Sonic Symbolism.
Talkhouse is launching the inaugural edition of Talkhouse Reader, a brand-new print and digital zine launching on November 7th. The publication will feature original essays, criticism and conversation about music and film from the people who make them. The inaugural issue, which is out November 7th, features Animal Collective, Bob Gruen, Bush Tetras, Craig Finn, Cassandra Jenkins, Crystal Moselle, Eszter Balint, Fievel Is Glauque, Gang Gang Dance, Greta Schiller, Joanna Sternberg, Lizzie Borden, Honeychild Coleman, Model/Actriz, Rebounder, The Dare, The Kills, Water From Your Eyes & Many More On The Theme of New York City. For this first edition, helmed over the course of summer 2023 by Talkhouse Music editor-in-chief Annie Fell and Talkhouse Film & TV editor-in-chief Nick Dawson, Talkhouse Reader surveyed the city it calls home: New York. What began as an attempt to deliver a State of The Union on the current corners of music and film ended up evolving into a much wider and more personal discussion. Across the issue's 50+ pages, New York legends and the newest members of the scene both reflect on what it means, if anything, to be a "New York artist" right now and throughout time.
Pre-order the print edition of Talkhouse Reader, and download the free digital version beginning November 7th: HERE "At a time when it feels like every other week, the shuttering of another beloved publication is announced, we feel proud and very lucky to be adding this new dimension to Talkhouse's editorial," says Annie Fell and Nick Dawson. "We hope to make it a regular element of our platform going forward." Talkhouse also produces Talkhouse.com, where artists write essays and criticism from firsthand perspectives, speak one-on-one with their peers via the Talkhouse Podcast and Talkhouse Live events, and offer readers and listeners unique insight into creative work of all genres and generations.  At Billy's Record Salon in Brooklyn on November 7th, Talkhouse will celebrate the inaugural Talkhouse Reader with a launch party open to all. From 6:30pm-10pm, the night will include numerous artists who appear in the first issue: a live podcast taping from zine contributors, performances from May Rio and Miracle Sweepstakes, DJ sets by Anastasia Coope, and more to be announced. Entry is free, no RSVP needed.

Kentucky native Honeychild Coleman makes a big noise, whether that’s with a guitar or a turntable, Coleman has a knack for driving melodies and giant beats.
Coleman is committed to following her muse wherever it go and in whatever shape it may take, be that as a DJ, in a shoegaze band, or making experimental bleep blops.
We caught up with her to ask about her Kentucky past, her Brooklyn present, and her top jams! [Read More]

Honeychild Coleman - Leigh and Me (It’s Always You)
I met her on the train when I was 19, and we had a brief but intense friendship. She was not a musician. She was a fashion student at FIT, and I was an acting student. She made me a sweater. We really connected. Then we lost touch.
Twenty years later, I ran into her at [Lower East Side club] Piano’s. She was Carolyn when I knew her before, and now she was Honeychild, this rock star making this great music. I love how she plays guitar, I love the tone she gets. It’s almost a Ronettes type of vibe crossed with the Breeders and Liz Phair.

Ok, to myself and to anyone who is getting into Riot Grrrl;
LISTEN ‼️ TO ‼️ SISTA ‼️ GRRRL ‼️ BANDS ‼️ INFORM ‼️ YOURSELF ‼️ ABOUT ‼️ SISTA ‼️ GRRRL ‼️ RIOT ‼️ AND ‼️ THE ‼️ RACISM/TRANSPHOBIA ‼️ IN ‼️ THE ‼️ ORIGINAL ‼️ RIOT ‼️ GRRRL ‼️ SCENE ‼️‼️
I love riot grrrl from the bottom of my heart, but every subculture has its problems, so now that riot grrrl is becoming more and more popular on tik tok we need to make sure we don't fall under the same diversity/white feminism problem the original scene had back on the 90s!!!
Some sista grrrl riot/riot grrrl artists that are woc recommendations:
Tamar-Kali
Suffrajet
Big Joanie
Skinny Girl Diet
Honeychild Coleman
Simi Stone
The Tuts
Nova Twins
Lilith Ai
The Linda Lindas
New Bloods
TV Tramps
Not sista grrrl/riot grrrl but still honorable mentions:
X-Ray Spex
Bam Bam
Trans riot grrrl:
G.L.O.S.S
She/Her/Hers
Dazey and The Scouts
Also, not a music rec, but the tv series We Are Lady Parts follows the story of a riot grrrl inspired punk band composed solely of Muslim woc, go watch it it's great!!
If you have any other sista grrrl or trans riot grrrl recommendations feel free to leave them!!

it's been a minute, so here's some of my recent listening:
crypta's echo of the soul- really stellar all-women black/death metal that's just. very fun? but still technically impressive. love that balance
220 volt- mind over muscle- just a fun little classic heavy metal record. very scifi feel to it and the riffs on it are so catchy i really just had a good time with this
dead to a dying world's elegy- grand imposing and lush. just a very beautiful and atmospheric album. no clue if this is black or crust but it's really good
finally listened to the whole of amy macdonald's this is the life. i liked the back half of this sooo much. but the first handful of songs tho are pretty forgettable sadly :(
the 1865's don't tread on we! was so good. i know honeychild coleman was involved and i love her voice so. i loved this. but the whole idea of the project is so smart and v resonate i highly recommend
yaotl mictlan's sagrada, tierra del jaguar- from what i know, this is mexican black folk metal that incorporates indigenous culture into the music/lyrics. super killer stuff. i loved it a lot

I’ve been having a quiet Saturday in; I cleaned my room, did laundry, and curled up with a Discworld book to tune out the impeachment trial.

I am sending this confession way late but after learning what the original idea was for blackout Tuesday, I wanted to send some recommendations of black women in metal/rock/punk as well as some other genres. Most are female fronted but some are also women playing instruments. Also tried my best to list the genre for each band but some may not be totally accurate. So here is the list:
Southern Avenue (Blues) Vodun (Psychedelic metal) Skinflint (Heavy metal, I don’t think Sandra is in the band anymore but she has done drums on all of their releases so far) Witch Mountain (Doom Metal) Dress The Dead (both fronted by Kayla Dixon) Oceans of Slumber (Progressive Metal) Ad Infinitum (Symphonic Metal. Melissa Bonny is also in Rage of Light which is Industrial Metal and she was in Evenmore which is also Symphonic) Butcher Babies (Groove Metal/Metalcore) X-Ray Spex (Punk) Ianwill (Melodic Death Metal, Audrey was also in a band called Diary of Destruction but they have split up) Palaceburn (Rock) Straight Line Stitch (Metalcore) Alabama Shakes (Blues/Southern Rock) Clay (Alternative Rock/Pop) Rosetta Tharpe (Rock n Roll, one of the biggest influences on the genre) Nubian Rose (Hard Rock) The Txlips Band (Rock, their frontwoman Gabby also has her own project as well) Nova Twins (Alternative Rock) Meet Me @ The Altar (Pop Punk) Big Joanie (Punk) The 1865 (Punk, also check out Honeychild Coleman Tetrarch (Metalcore/Nu metal, not female fronted but she plays guitar) Tamar Kali (Alternative Rock) Jingo De Lunch (Punk) Skunk Anansie (Alternative Rock) Militia Vox (Heavy Metal) Pleasure Venom (Punk) Oak, Ash & Thorn (Folk Meta, not female fronted but she is the drummer) The Objex (Punk) The BellRays (Rock) The Skins (R&B/Soul) Erzulie (Punk) Carson (Pop Punk) Breaking The Silent (Power Metal) TV Tramps (Punk) Maafa Hardcore (Hardcore Punk) Bearaxe (Rock) Skinny Girl Diet (Punk/Grunge) The Tuts (Indie/Pop Punk, she plays drums) Charmpit (Pop Punk) Sarah and the Safe Word (Cabaret Rock, she mostly plays violin but also contributes vocals sometimes) Sate (Hard Rock/Blues) Noods (Punk) Fatty Cakes and the Puff Pastries (Punk) Shea Diamond (R&B/Blues) The New Respects (Alternative) Shemekia Copeland (Blues) Ruthie Foster (Blues) Shaka Ponk (Funk Rock) Lil Halima (R&B/Soul) Sudan Archives (R&B) Darkest Place (Extreme Gothic Metal) Hora Vitrum (Metalcore) Bleed The Pigs (Grindcore/Noise) Umi (R&B)
That’s all but feel free to recommend more!
Mod Note* Sorry the writing is very small
