#homophobia mention
Note
as someone who absolutely adores ikesoren, I’m so tired of the people who insist that it’s canon. It’s not. Could you interpret it as supported/encouraged by canon? Sure! Absolutely! But it isn’t canon, and the sooner other ikesoren shippers accept that and stop sounding like pretentious assholes the better. Whether or not the ship is canon doesn’t make it better or worse, and frankly it just alienates the people that don’t ship it (as they are free to do!)
(And before someone harps on homophobia: yes yes I understand the want to call it canon because of the way homophobes cry about how Ike could never be gay, etc etc, but listen. I am a gay man and I’m taking you by the shoulders and telling you that it’s not innately homophobic to say ikesoren isn’t canon. Because it just ain’t. Again I absolutely adore the ship, it’s one of my fave FE ships! I’m just tired of other fans of it acting like it’s canon and alienating people that don’t ship it. Frankly I feel the same about every ship that isn’t canon being called canon, but this is the most egregious example imo)

Half the people on my dash think it's homophobic if anything bad happens to a gay character in media ever, and the other half exclusively play existentialist survival horror games about lesbian cyborgs who die in a fire at the end, which makes for some stark juxtapositions in the old scrolling experience, let me tell you.

People have been asking for a Chang timeline post! Chang not only represents a turning point in the politics of the Tintin series, he also represents a sense of chronology in the otherwise floating timeline of the canon. While Tintin almost never discusses his past, Chang is a key part of his personal story in Tintin in Tibet.
I imagine him and Tintin being around the same age, with Chang being a few months younger.
Child - Chang had a happy early childhood being raised by his father and grandparents. He never mentions his mother when recounting his backstory to Tintin, so my main guesses are she either passed away or his parents separated before Chang was old enough to remember her. His father and grandparents taught him how to cook from an early age, and taught him the importance of solidarity and community, lessons Chang will hold onto the rest of his life.
Early canon - Chang is orphaned. This sudden loss causes him to act out. He turns to picking pockets and causing general mischief until an orphanage takes him in. Chang learns a lot of skills just to survive - he’s stealthy, he’s street smart and pretty decent at climbing. His experiences as a street kid taught him to be wary of authority.
The orphanage provides a brief period of stability until it is swept away in a flood. Until this point, Chang has felt pretty powerless in his life so just goes with the flow, so when Tintin drags him out of a river he doesn’t think twice about going along with him to break up a drug ring in The Blue Lotus. Going on this adventure with Tintin imbues him with a sense of empowerment and purpose he never felt before.
Student - The Wangs adopt him pretty quickly after he busts the drug ring with Tintin. It’s a sudden change he struggles to adapt to, with the Wangs being wealthy academics and Chang coming from a working class background there’s a significant culture clash.
Tintin leaves just as quickly and rarely contacts Chang, even as his journalism career takes off, leaving Chang lonely and heartbroken. Chang tries to send him letters but doesn’t know that Tintin moved out of Labrador Road.
Having missed out on education for a bit Chang struggles with school. He feels unworthy of the opportunities the Wangs try to provide him with and a part of him feels they only adopted him because they were dazzled by him taking down that drug ring, an achievement he increasingly feels he will never live up to again. He struggles with mental health issues, but finds solace in photography, his portfolio getting him a place at university despite his bad grades.
Young adult - In an attempt to try and help Chang’s mental wellbeing the Wangs decide to send Chang off to visit his uncles before he starts university, only for Chang to nearly perish in a plane crash in Tibet. Ironically, it’s this near death experience that shakes him out of it. Chang has a renewed enthusiasm for life, taking to travelling, dance and photography. Didi trains him in some basic martial arts so Chang can fend for himself.
Tintin makes an effort to stay in touch after having nearly lost Chang. The two repair their friendship, and Tintin has him stay at Marlinspike when Chang studies in Belgium for his second year of university. By the time Chang comes around, he’s had a growth spurt and has been working out - Chang is pretty haunted by his skeletal state from his near death experience in Tibet, so has been making an effort to recover.
After helping Tintin with a case, Tintin gets him a job at his paper as his photographer. Being Chinese he faces challenges in the workplace, and he uses his charm to be as personable as possible. Unlike Tintin, he frequents quite a few staff parties, and ends up pretty popular!
A couple of years later, Chang tries to unionise the staff at the paper. He and Tintin are outed as a couple and the two of them are fired.
Middle aged - After fighting fascists with the Marlinspike team during WW2 Chang and Tintin settle down in Belgium, with Chang scraping out some freelance photography work and a part time job at a portraiture studio. War in China causes them to lose contact with his adopted family.
While Tintin grows more cynical, Chang accepts the chaos of the world and mellows out a lot. He tries to be a supportive partner and makes extra effort to stay in touch with his uncles and cousins.
Elderly - Chang uses his skills in photojournalism when he gets involved in political activism. He and Tintin are finally able to reunite with Didi and his children in the 70s.

*some kinda au where dream and hob got together after like their 2nd or 3rd meeting or something* dream: *fully just trying to kiss hob in the tavern*
hob, nervously: hey love are you aware that like. that like two men kissing is kind of frowned upon in these parts. in this current year. to put it mildly
dream: that is fucking stupid. no one cared when you were apes living in caves
hob, perplexed by this answer: okay well they do care now and we're sitting in the middle of a crowded tavern
dream: do you care what people think
hob: i care about not getting the shit kicked out of me if i'm being honest
dream: *waves a hand and puts them all to sleep*
hob: that seems excessive
dream: does it make you feel better to know they're all having terrible nightmares?
hob: no.
--
another time--
dream: *once again trying to kiss hob in the middle of the white horse inn*
hob, who's become a fair hand at fighting but still doesn't fancy the idea of taking on like 15 blokes at once: do you remember what i said last time
dream: STILL??
hob: yep hob: actually it's probably worse now
dream: and yet my sister keeps trying to get me to see the best in humanity...
hob: what?
dream: nothing
hob: i think it's just a gender thing you know. they'll get over it eventually. i hope.
dream: this is stupid. that isn't even real.
hob: well it's kind of real in the minds of people one might consider. authorities. you get me. i kind of don't want to have to flee to australia
dream: *aggravated sigh* fuck this we're going to the dreaming and never coming back
--
dream, coming out of his cage in 2022: *incredibly weary* is it any better yet
hob: welll....... kind of yes but also no
dream, despairing: i suffer so much and for what
hob: if it helps you can kiss me in the tavern now
dream: FUCKING FINALLY

I was so caught up in a scenario in which every single FR player is lgbtq+ that I forgot a world where Flight Rising players can be homophobic
[If you are cishet and you come under this post going “well I play FR and I’m not apart of the lgbt-” I will fucking eat you]

I find it ironic that people love to talk about Billy Hargrove having internalized homophobia despite the fact that homophobic Billy is only a fanon trait, meanwhile Steve Harrington used queer as an insult against Jonathan Byers and yet folks wanna act like he's the most ally to ever ally (or even pretend he was never homophobic to begin with) just because he wasn't still a dick to Robin when she came out to him.
Y'all can have whatever headcanons you want, but the canon truth is that between Billy and Steve, only one of them got a homophobic insult slung at them but never slung it back, and it wasn't Steve.

Feeling grateful for my mom today. 10 years ago I came out to her and she had no idea what asexual/aromantic meant, but she said, "Are you happy? Do your friends support you? Oh, you have friends like that, wonderful! As long as you're happy, I'm happy for you."
Just instinctive kindness, even toward something she didn't understand. Looking at the unknown with empathy instead of fear or annoyance or "Ugh, kids these days." That's the sort of person I want to be, too.
(She also got kicked out of a church 50 years ago for supporting gay rights. But I only found out about this later, in passing, because she didn't think what she did was anything special - just basic human decency.)
You won't always know the right words to say, or the current issues, or the answers to those issues. We're all ignorant or mistaken sometimes. But you can always try to be kind, and that alone can take you pretty damn far.

my theory about the cut oliver/felix kiss
... is that it's an extended version of the maze scene. oliver kisses felix, who shoves him away and calls him a f*ggot.
this would seal his fate twice and make oliver slightly more sympathetic for killing him.

Since Tim Drake Robin has shown Bernard’s parents were not supportive of his coming out, I have decided to do a Watsonian read of his pre-reboot appearances (where he is a drastically different character) and decided him talking about how hot Dana was as the classic “pretending to be straight” behavior.
As someone who has done this myself (“who is the hottest Jonas brother, Iz” “Uh…Kevin?”) I can completely buy a young man trying to preform heterosexuality going “hello fellow straights (?) isn’t your, uh, stepmom hot? Yes, we are conversing as bros.”

Tintin through time!
Thought it would be fun to have my various designs for Tintin in one post. The canon comics have a floating timeline and Tintin never ages. I think rooting him in a specific time and context makes him feel a little more real (also I am a sucker for historical fiction). Click below for a potted timeline and notes about each design!
Left to right, top to bottom:
Child - in my timeline Tintin was born in 1915, a year into the First World War. He was probably picked on a lot by his peers for being small, ginger and slightly effeminate, and was picked on by adults for being “difficult” and asking too many questions.
Early canon - He leaves school early and becomes a reporter at 14. He’s unhinged, he’s blasé, he dresses like Spongebob. Coming right out of Catholic school he has a lot of unhealthy beliefs he needs to confront and unlearn. I imagine his editor is a pretty shady person as they are willing to send this kid off to dangerous places. His naivety prevents him from spotting any red flags at first.
Late canon - Tintin as we know him! His journalism career is at its peak at the tender age of 17. He’s found a family and stability at Marlinspike. His politics are evolving. He is, however, pretty neglectful of his own personal life, almost fully focusing on his career. He’s starting to grow wary of his editor and they frequently argue, Tintin often winning out as he knows it’s his articles that sell papers.
Young adult - With the Second World War breaking out this is an unstable time in his life. He’s come to terms with being gay but is fired from his paper after being forcibly outed. Tintin and the Marlinspike team take fighting fascism into their own hands.
For his design here he wears a turtleneck like Captain Haddock, glasses like Professor Calculus (also representing a renewed perspective on things) and his hair is more relaxed like Chang’s! The idea was to show how he has been impacted by the people he cares about.
After the war ends he struggles with unemployment and burnout, insecure that he might have peaked as a teenager.
Middle aged - It’s the late 50s - early 60s, Tintin is jaded and cynical but still kind and willing to help others. He is absolutely horrified by the events of WW2 and carries an enormous sense of guilt, feeling he didn’t do enough. His faith in journalism has also been thoroughly shaken, witnessing the spectacular failing of the system himself, and realising there are people who genuinely do not care for the truth, and are only concerned with power.
Elderly - if he somehow makes it to old age he’d be a chaotic little old man who doesn’t give a Single Shit. It’s the late 80s and early 90s, at this point he has retired from journalism and has published his own books, and has taken to becoming a full time political activist (here he’s wearing an AIDS awareness ribbon from 1991, in the 70s Herge had Tintin wear a helmet displaying a symbol for nuclear disarmament). Kids adore him, cops hate him!
He has taken to technology, being an early adopter of the Internet and desktop computers. He and Chang have since been able to reunite with Chang’s family and they often spend time with Didi’s grandkids!
I don’t know what would kill him. Old age? A car bomb? Maybe he falls over badly and bangs his head one last time. I don’t think it’s my place to decide.
