Dick Tater is my favorite. You have to say it to get it. Perfect homonym.

Bestie fic writers, it’s time for another edition of Helpful Homophone Hint from your friendly neighborhood beta!
If you’re pulling on/straining something — a string, tension, a Force bond, etc. — you’re pulling it taut.
If you once learned something from a teacher, you were taught.
Tumblr media
I naturally have an eye for these kinds of homonym mixups, so it’s okay if you don’t! Let me beta read your fic and I’ll catch all these for you. 😃 It’s my way of giving back, for all the hours of enjoyment fanfic has given me!
(As always, fic writers, thank you for sharing your work with the world!! I appreciate you!)

Homonyms!
Words that have multiple different meanings! Inspired by a question I answered on here (you know who you are if you see this, hello and thanks for the inspiration!)
Some of these words have even more meanings and this is in no way a complete list, just the ones that I found / came up with the fastest!

Probably the most common (or at least most annoying to me personally) fanfic homonym error
Is using "tenants" when you mean "tenets."
A tenant is someone who pays rent for real estate, like an apartment or office building.
A tenet is an opinion, principle, dogma, or doctrine which a person, school, or sect holds or maintains as true.
If you're talking about a landlord, you mean tenant. If you're talking about a religion, you mean tenet.

Musings On The Monkey Nut!
Yes folks, I'm as surprised as you that Tonka hasn't done anything dateless for a while.
Back to The Monkey Nut. Aside from being more 'bitey' than normal, they've dropped two absolute clangers recently.
Tonka and TMN have been trying out various local activities, (book groups, craft clubs, etc) and while looking online on what was available, Tonka pointed out "I can't believe it, there's a local Naturist group!" and TMN replied "You mean there is a group of Nakies? In Doncaster?" Nakies, I ask you.
Also, fyi, I've recently had a smol pressure sore that had to be dressed at the GP surgery, and after it was sorted, TMN mentioned "At least we won't have to keep going back to the Docs now that Daddy's legion has healed!" Cue five mins of confusion as we work out that out wonderful Hexadecimal Offspring thought that the word legion, and lesion were homonyms.
Bless!

Pique / Peak / Peek
Tumblr media
Pique is a loanword from French, a verb (piquer) meaning to be jabbed like a needle, or a mosquito bite; as a noun, it’s flexible, meaning stimulation or hotheadedness. In English, we say something piques our curiosity, or that someone does something rash ‘in a fit of pique.’
Peak as a noun means the top of something, the apex or summit, after which it goes back down again. Typically a mountain peak, or a sales peak, peak tourist season, and so on. As a verb, it refers to the moment something reaches its highest point, like “the new Blur single peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 chart.”
Peek means to look quickly or furtively at something (often hidden, private or secret). A “sneak peek” is an advance preview of something.

I peek around the hill
And eye the mountain peak
And I feel my interest pique
At my homonyms
Because while the peak is unique
My words are mine
And my words are fine

Friends and fellow fic writers,
I say this as gently as possible, because I adore you all:
Vise = a metal tool with movable jaws that are used to hold an object firmly in place while work is done on it
Vice = moral depravity or corruption
Every day = a two-word adverb phrase that means “each day” or “daily” (e.g., We read every day)
Everyday = an adjective that means "used or seen daily," "ordinary," or "commonplace" (e.g. I brought my everyday clothes)
(I'm sorry, but I couldn't hold it in anymore.) Go forth and fic grammatically.

Why do these to identical combinations of letters with the difference on a single space mean two entirely different things?
Mans laughter
Manslaughter
Oh dearly beloved and oh so obnoxious hodgepodge language that is English I love to hate you.
Just to clarify
This is a joke and a rhetorical question. I am well aware that these are two different words. I didn’t think anyone would see this as a serious question. (Thank you everyone that offered to explain it…I assume it was kindly meant although unnecessary).
