Feb Update
I’m somehow both impressed and upset with my results this month.
If I’m being honest, I worked out more than I thought I would, with the exception of the week I was sick, I worked out on average three times a week, with one week doing four workouts. I started off not being able to fully do a mile, to being able to do two.
But that all being said, I fell pretty short of the goal I set. I was beating myself up about it during my workout today until I really thought about what I’ve done instead of what I didn’t, and I’ve decided to view this month as a warm up month.
I’m setting my March goals already, and I’ll be doing my first weigh in at the end of that month. So far my goals are to do a 50 wall pushups a day and move to 100 mid month (yikes, but I’m gonna give it a go), and to walk 70 miles.
Thanks to everyone who started following and has stuck with me through this month of a lot of ups and downs.
Its been really difficult to start this. The first time I was down this road was back in 2011, I was 250/255 and HORRIFIED at that, now I’d kill to be that weight again. I worked hard for 3 years just to lose 50 pounds and maintain that. At the time I didn’t know I had health issues interfering with my weightloss,I just kept thinking I wasn’t trying hard enough, or doing enough despite having a personal trainer, a nutritionist, converting my living room into a personal gym, cutting out fast food and sugar, processed meats, and going low carb. I ended up developing an ED and really messing myself up.
That reminder coupled with my husband being out of work for six months, and the odd jobs I do barley being enough to make up the difference in his unemployment, we aren’t able to eat as healthy as we’d like right now. The last month+ has been us trying to be as creative as we can be with what little grocery budget we have, and it hasn’t been easy.
But, I’m also remembering my love for this. The excitement of setting goals and pushing to achieve them, the rush when I complete a good workout, the pride of seeing new things I can do physically that I couldn’t before, how much better a lot of my chronic issues were when I could eat healthier, being able to go for all day hikes with little to no pain, being able to wear clothes I actually like instead of settling for whatever I can find in my size just in a shade of black.
It's a long list. On my worst days I try to run through that list often to remind myself why I can’t keep letting my depression win out and cause us to slide even further away from where we need to be.

I saw your post about fitness. I am also trying to get fit and have been stumbling through YouTube videos trying to find what works for me. I’ve been preaching about Caroline Girvan lately, and would like to offer her for you to look into. No matter who I turn to she’s the one I keep coming back to. Her current program Iron is her first with no cardio and is meant for heavier dumbbells, averaging 35 minutes. Epic II are the longest videos that could easily run up to an hour. Epic Endgame averages 45 minutes. I know everyone is always saying their thing is the best so no worries if she’s not your thing! Only dumbbells are required.
Thank you so much for the suggestion! Videos don't work for me sadly, because there is literally no space in my apartment to move around at all -- like I have to put in a work from home set up for my job and we can't even find room for a tiny desk. I hope there will be room for yoga and pilates when we move but until then, there's just no way. Even standing and doing like bicep curls requires me to be about 6 inches from the TV.
But anyone else out there struggling, ESPECIALLY those who don't want to do a gym (or can't, for whatever reason), definitely should check k it out. You can get great results with just dumbbells.
I would also like to second the YouTube idea in general for people with disabilities who may want some physical activity but have limitations that make it difficult. My son and B both really like Hybrid Calisthenics, by Hampton Liu. He's very positive, offers short videos and lots of modifications.
I have started walking on my lunch break some but that's not gonna take off 70 lbs.

Strengthen Your Pecs Anywhere: 4 Bodyweight Chest Exercises You Can Do at Home

Effective Chest Workouts at Home

Building your chest muscles doesn't require expensive gym equipment. With some basic exercises, you can get great results right in your own home. All it takes is consistency and pushing yourself each session.

The Push-up

The push-up is truly the king of bodyweight chest exercises. Whether regular, wide grip, or close grip, it works your entire pectoral region. Aim for 3 sets of 10-15 reps per session, resting 60 seconds between sets. Be sure to lower your body in a controlled motion before pushing back up with power.

The Pull-up

Pull-ups target your latissimus dorsi muscles on the sides and back of your chest for a rounder look. If you can't do a full pull-up yet, jump up and lower down slowly with control. Another option is pulling yourself up using a resistance band tied to a high point like a door frame.

Dumbbell Options

For added challenge, try dumbbell chest presses on the floor or a bench. Lifting two dumbbells above your chest in a "flying superman" position works your upper pecs. You can also do dumbbell flyes by holding weights out to your sides and bringing your palms together overhead.

Add in Ab Moves

Your chest workout is a good time to hit your core as well. Throws planks, crunches and other abdominal exercises into the mix to work your whole upper body. Diam to failure each set and your six-pack will start to shine through!

Consistency is Key

Training your chest at home two to three times per week will yield results faster than you might think. Remember to rest your muscles fully between sessions to allow for growth. Coupled with a healthy diet, your new chest will develop before long thanks to disciplined home workouts.

Get Ripped at Home: 6 Simple Workouts for Otaku to Stay Fit

Staying Fit at Home: Workouts for Otaku

Hey guys! If you spend a lot of time indoors like me, it's important not to forget about exercise. Even though it's comfortable at home, we still need to stay healthy. Let me show you some fun workouts you can do right in your own place without any equipment.

Workout #1 - Pushups for Chest

This first move targets your pecks (chest muscles). Just place a couple chairs or stools about shoulder-width apart on your floor. Get down low and support yourself with your hands on the furniture. Slowly lower your body in a pushup position, then push back up. Suck in your gut and puff out your chest as much as you can. Do 3 sets of 12 reps with a short break between.

Workout #2 - Crunches for Abs

Next, work on tightening up your six-pack muscles. Sit on the edge of a chair or sofa with your feet flat. Use your abdominal muscles to slowly lift your shoulders and upper back off the seat in a crunch movement. Don't pull on your head with your hands. Do 3 sets of 15 reps, taking brief breaks in between sets.

Workout #3 - Bicep Curls

Grab a couple water bottles or a pair of dumbbells if you have them. This exercise builds bicep definition. Sit comfortably and curl the weights up towards your shoulders, keeping your elbows tucked in. Squeeze your bicep at the top of each repetition. Complete 3 sets of 15 reps with short breaks.

Workout #4 - Squats for Legs

Find a clear spot by a wall at home. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, then push your hips back and bend your knees to lower down into a squat. Use the wall for support if needed. Go as low as you comfortably can, then push back up to standing. Squeeze your glutes at the top. Do 3 sets of 15 reps.

Workout #5 - Rows for Back

Stand holding the water bottles in front of your torso for this exercise. Hinge at your hips to bend forward from the waist until your back is nearly parallel to the floor. Pull the weights straight back towards your waist without rounding your lower back. Squeeze your shoulder blades together at the back. Complete 3 sets of 12 reps.

Workout #6 - Situps for Core

Finish up by targeting your waist muscles. Lie on your back with knees bent and hands behind your head. Inhale as you lift your shoulder blades off the floor in a crunch motion. Exhale as you lower back down in control. Go for 3 sets of 15 reps, taking breaks as needed.

Stick with these simple moves 2-3 times a week and you'll start to see and feel a difference. Have fun and stay strong, guys!

Tone Your Arms at Home in 6 Simple Steps

Tone Your Arms Without Going to the Gym

Having muscular, defined arms is something a lot of guys want. When you see athletes on TV, their biceps really stand out in a way that looks powerful. The good news is that you don't need special equipment or a fancy gym membership to build some gun show arms. There are plenty of exercises you can do at home or around the neighborhood.

Start with Pushups

Pushups are a terrific way to work your chest, shoulders, and triceps. But it's important to do them properly to avoid injury and get symmetrical results. Instead of trying to do a ton all at once, increase your pushups slowly over time. For example, aim to do 10 each day for a week. Then up it to 15 for the next week. Keep progressing at your own comfortable pace. And remember to use both arms equally - don't let one side get stronger than the other.

Pullups Are Tough - But You Got This!

Pullups might seem impossible, but you can definitely build up to them. Start by hanging from the bar and just holding yourself up for as long as you can. Then try different underhand and overhand grips to work both sides of your back. Like with pushups, slowly add more reps over weeks and months. You'll be cranking out pullups before you know it.

Chores Are Low-Key Workouts

When people have jobs that involve physical labor like construction, their muscles tend to look fitter than average. Why? Because meaningful chores and activities are actually great natural exercises! Things like yardwork, carrying groceries, or helping out around the house can build you up without even realizing it. So next time you're tempted to slack off, remember every little bit helps tone your guns.

Always Play It Safe

Whether you exercise indoors or outside, make sure to listen to your body. Don't overdo it when you're just starting out. And if an exercise ever causes pain instead of just normal soreness, stop right away. Building arm muscles is a journey, so stay consistent and you'll see results before too long. Just keep at it slowly and safely for awesome arms without all the gym hassle.
