i have a longstanding project of cultivating a list of nhl players who wear glasses (with a focus on the ones who typically wear contacts and are seldom seen in their glasses, because identifying them is more exciting and because i also am seldom seen in my glasses) but it turns out that simply maintaining this list in my head is a terrible method because i’m constantly forgetting people and losing my documentation (if i ever had it)
anyway i would love to know if anyone else is keeping records on this topic. or just like has some pictures. i want to collect the information like a gremlin
here is a picture of charlie mcavoy wearing his rarely-seen glasses, as an offering

can you explain the directioner->hockey pipeline, please?
yes i CAN thanks for giving me an opportunity to take a break from my homework.
so, this won’t be a very long story but it is a funny one (to me). when One Direction broke up, the girlies were lost. adrift. i wasn’t among their number, so i’ve only heard secondhand accounts, but the boyband megafans needed a new place to direct their specific type of fandom.
some of them went to kpop, pretty understandably. but a LARGE chunk of them went to the NHL. why? because every year there is the NHL draft where a fresh band of young (18-20) and (sometimes) attractive guys are paraded around like show ponies and snapped up by NHL teams. I just went to double check and the 2015/2016/2017 drafts are FULL of guys that this specific subset of hockey fandom is fixated on. the timing lines up. those draft years had a lot of decent looking guys too, which helps.
i will add that hockey coverage leans on storylines—individual players and their stories/friendships with other players/relationships with their team/achievements (source: i was a hockey reporter). this is perfect for RPF fans, because there’s a basis. two guys that are really close friends on a team are ideal for writing about. two guys who are close friends despite being on different teams provide an alternate type of story to tell. people also like to fantasize about having a relationship with a player they like, just like people fantasize about other celebrities. there are hot guys in hockey, it’s just a fact (source: i’m gay and have eyes).
so the result of this is that the hockey fanbase now consists of a lot of old-timer white men who are set in their ways and fairly conservative. and then a new incoming fanbase of young women and young queer people, who like hockey for very different reasons. i fall into the second demographic, technically, though i didn’t come to hockey through the same channels. the two are often at odds. a lot of ‘traditional’ hockey fans think that being attracted to players or having an investment in more than one team means you’re a fake fan. this is, obviously, bullshit. a lot of the directioners i knew when i was active on hockey twitter knew the game like the back of their hand.
if you look up the one direction to hockey pipeline, you’ll find a lot of tweets about it. it’s pretty established in hockey circles and it’s a point of pride for a lot of people! i don’t like RPF at all and avoid engaging with it, but i do like the fact that a huge demographic of young progressive fans can push the NHL in a better direction. it has some issues too (look up the booktok & seattle kraken drama if you want to see an example), but at the end of the day i would prefer to talk hockey with a 21 year old who’s gonna use my phone number for harry styles early access tickets (real story) than with a 60 year old ‘superfan’ who thinks the NHL shouldn’t have pride night.

Dying to hear all your thoughts on Adam Banks!
my thoughts on adam banks are A Lot, prob too much to be condensed into a single tumblr post 😭 but i guess my ~hottest take on him is simply the fact that i don’t think he’s the “sad, anxious (or even abused)” kid some people think he is. (what i do think is that he feels a ton of pressure because he's a kid who is aware of his own talent, but also that he loves the sport). like there seems to be a general consensus that adam never gets to make his own decisions and is always “forced” into them?? a lot of his behavior is also excused by making him a perpetual victim, which, imo, is a false narrative but also rids adam of having his own agenda. and it also erases his personal growth and the choices he’s made to better himself.
like, adam’s entire journey is parallel to bombay: to become a better person. becoming a team player who doesn't just look out for himself. like adam himself says in spirit of the ducks: “i kinda sucked as a human”. i love that he owns it because it’s true!!! he did suck!!! not because he’s the best player, but because of his winning mentality that was 100% shaped by the hawks’ “it’s not worth winning if you can’t win big”. i get that in the movies they don’t really give adam much of a voice and a lot of his scenes are left to interpretation, so yeah. the version of adam that i headcanon is heavily influenced by the source material (novelizations, old manuscripts) where he’s definitely a bit more ambitious, self-sufficient, and knows how to bite back/take care of himself. ex., in the novelization, he’s proud of himself that he’d made varsity. in the movie, it sort of looks like he's just disappointed/vaguely annoyed. also in the novelization, he yells at charlie during their fight that (charlie) is just “upset that your precious coach (bombay) bailed on you” which is 100% true and i still wish they’d kept that line in because no one dared to call charlie out on his BS when he needed them to. but i’m aware not everyone has read them, or doesn’t care to, tho.

Hey Rein at im at a hockey game, and I was wondering if more contact sports are played by Dragomshifters? And If so,are hockey fights in particular done in dragon form?
Love that this question popped up into your head in the wild haha <3
The short answer is yes! Longer answer is yes with a few caveats. There are a few human + shifter groups out there, but most of the time the sports are split due to a lot of complicated conversations, some not always in good faith. Either way, it depends on the sport because some sports would need a weight class implemented due to the sheer size of some shifters, but others can benefit from the diversity of weight and size.
There’s a specific sport dragonshifters themselves created that has a lot of specialized rules and plays depending on the species origin, but it will come up in game so I won’t spill it all here 🤭 I also need to develop it more lol
I like to think Frostspitters have some RAD as hell hockey games though. Lots of tail swatting use instead of sticks, that sort of thing. Definitely can break out into dragon fights though- very expensive cleanup.

hello, i was wondering if it would be okay if i printed this matthew art out so i can hang it on my wall? it is really really good and i’d love to have a physical version of it so i can stare at it whenever i procrastinate studying
it’s absolutely okay if that’s not something you want, but i thought i’d ask
Yeah absolutely!!! At this point in time, I don't have any plans to make prints, so if you'd like to make prints of my art for yourself please do!
(The usual terms and conditions apply: please do not mass produce or sell my art, no cropping out of my signature, and no using all or part of it for commercial purposes.)
But I would flipping honored! Also please study!!!! <3

a running list of very niche nhl facts that break my brain a bit:
- tim stutzle, matthew knies, seth jarvis, jamie drysdale, and matt rempe were all born in the same year (2002)
- matthew knies and mason mctavish have more olympic experience than auston matthews and connor mcdavid
- vegas has played in just as many outdoor games as toronto since the 2017/18 season
- travis dermott was drafted one pick ahead of sebastian aho in the 2015 draft
- trevor zegras was drafted by the mississauga steelheads (ohl)
- the leafs have won the same number of games outside of north america as they have playoff rounds in the past 20 years (2)
- the last canadian team to win the cup was the canadiens in the 1992/93 season, and only 15 different teams have won it in the 30 years since
- auston matthews is only 12 goals back from current 3rd place holder dave keon in all time leaf goals despite playing 518 fewer games
- john tavares has played more games for the leafs than zach hyman did

Ohhhhh they're retiring Jagr's number. THAT'S why he's been hanging out with the penguins. That makes sense. I thought he was just like chillin with them for fun.
