Types of Drugs Used for PEP in HIV Patients
Tumblr media
Hey there, folks of Singapore! Today, let's dive into a topic that might sound a bit complex but is crucial for our well-being – the types of drugs used for PEP in HIV patients. Yep, we're talking about post exposure prophylaxis HIV treatment and the medications that play a superhero role in preventing the virus after potential exposure.
Understanding the Basics
So, you've heard about PEP, but what's the deal with the medications? Let me break it down:
What is PEP?
PEP is like the emergency exit for potential HIV exposure. It involves taking medications to reduce the risk of infection after a potential exposure – think of it as a safety net.
Why Medications Matter
PEP medications are the warriors in this scenario. They work by blocking the virus's ability to replicate and establish an infection.
PEP Medications 101
Now, let's get to the juicy part – the types of medications involved:
1. Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (TDF)
How it Works: TDF inhibits an enzyme crucial for HIV replication.
Why It's Important: This stalwart drug is a cornerstone in many PEP regimens.
2. Emtricitabine (FTC)
How it Works: FTC is another antiretroviral, working hand-in-hand with TDF.
Why It's Important: The dynamic duo of TDF and FTC packs a punch against HIV.
3. Raltegravir
How it Works: Raltegravir blocks an enzyme, preventing the integration of HIV into human DNA.
Why It's Important: This adds an extra layer of defense to the PEP lineup.
The Takeaway
Alright, friends, when it comes to post exposure prophylaxis HIV medications, it's not about one-size-fits-all. Your healthcare provider will tailor the regimen based on the nature of exposure and individual factors.
Remember, if you find yourself in a situation where PEP might be needed, time is of the essence. Reach out to your healthcare provider pronto. Stay informed, stay safe, and let's look out for each other on this health journey.

#CLAPMUTT - the plaster bow tie represents the fears and insecurities about my voice. Not only the fear of singing but also the characteristic of speaking too fast and sometimes not being able to listen to my voice when I speak. So why not still singing? Why not still acting? It can make things harder, but I don’t remember enjoying easy things anyway 👏🏼🔇 #clapmutt 📷- @hashtagkilledthevideostar #clonwofalltrades#clownmood#hivsupport#nudebody#artlifemodel#bowtie#bowtieplaster#nakedbody#performerartist #hashtagkilledthevideostar #killedthevideostar https://www.instagram.com/p/COpcP8OrTrz/?igshid=160ygwrmc8fut

Confusion - Depression or Anxiety?
So the past few days or weeks, I found my self a new hobby to keep my mind off pretty much everything - work, sickness, and responsibilities.
The past days were amazing, it was one more off the bucket list, it kept me sane and occupied it made feel happy and me feel alive again. However, the moment I get back in the city for a few days, I started to feel uneasy, starting to have that nervous feel about anything and everything, I was worried I was going or falling into depression again. But apparently thats not the case, I was getting anxiety attacks, from where? I have no idea, maybe because I kept it all in again, the question why me again? What will ever happen to my life? Will I ever have a family of my own? Everytime I head out of the city and see friends, family and strangers, all I could think of is how lucky they are to have their healthy selves and here I am feelin all the self pitty again.
I just cant get over it for now thats giving me those anxiety attacks which plays with my emotions. Its like getting heart broken for all the little things that you cannot explain. Last night, when I got an attack I felt like I needed to talk to someone, I felt like I just needed someone to be with, to hold my hand and say everythings A OKAY. I sent out messages to the key people I told my secret to and to my surprise, to one responded, well, given the fact that it was late at night I understood.
But, again... Its okay, have to go for an appointment, catch you later guys!

You are more than HIV...
When I look at my two best friends, I don’t see the HIV. It’s never the first thing I think of. I see their smiles, their goofy senses of humor, the way they care about me, their talents, and what makes them who they are. The HIV doesn’t factor into that.
I know that as a newly diagnosed person with HIV the struggle to see past it is rough. I don’t have it myself and I am not going to pretend to imagine what that is like.
I have only been there for someone who found out, but never once did I judge my friends.  Both of them got it because they trusted someone and they thought that the other person and themselves were in love. They were lied to. It happens more often than you think and the world is a sad place.
But I want to stress that an educated person is not going to let your HIV define you if you dont. You can’t get HIV from casual contact and if you take the right precautions, you are not going to get it from sexual contact either.
The stigma is still huge though. HIV is simply a chronic, manageable disease. Precautions need to be taken like every other disease. With diabetes, you have to take meds, check your blood sugar, and take precautions with what food you eat. With HIV you have to take a pill everyday, and take more precautions in the bedroom. However, one is stigmatized and the other isn’t.
The most important thing though is that person is a person no matter what their HIV status is. It’s important to know your status, know your partners, wear protection, disclose that information to your partners before sex, and do all of those things....but it’s also important that we stop treating people who already have HIV differently. They are human beings just like you and me.

A guy I've been sleeping with just told me he just found out he's HIV positive. We had unprotected sex. And my lymph nodes were swollen for a while a few weeks ago. I'm really scared to get tested cause I feel I know what the answer is going to be. Any advice?
This is actually a great question for hivforum (AKA Dr. Joel), a doctor who takes questions about HIV. He doesn’t take every single question, but he might take yours. I suggest him because the lymph nodes issue is a medical one and he’s got the knowledge/training to answer it, whereas I don’t (swollen lymph nodes don’t necessarily mean HIV, but you’d feel better having a doctor tell you that).
But what I can tell you is this: breathe. Don’t be scared.
Do you watch Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt? It’s a show on Netflix about a woman who lived underground in a cult, and one way she got through the trauma of it was by counting to ten. All you have to do is get to ten. And then do it again. If you break up all the stress you’re feeling into smaller, more manageable parts, things don’t look so bad.
Right now, you’re probably thinking that your world is ending. That’s probably why you’re so afraid to get tested. You might be blaming your sexual partner. That’s a dark path that leads nowhere productive. You need to take this time to take care of your health. Focus on yourself; this isn’t about anyone else right now. Don’t think about what life with HIV looks like. Think about what you need to do take care of yourself right now.
Breathe. Count to ten. Get in your car. And go get tested. Maybe that’s at a local clinic. Maybe that’s buying an at-home testing kit from Rite Aid/CVS. Maybe it’s calling your doctor to schedule a test.
Finally, some tough love: not getting tested doesn’t make you HIV-negative. Avoiding the truth doesn’t make anything better. You might be negative! And if you are, every day you put off learning you’re negative is one more day you’re living in misery for no good reason. Imagine how much better you’d feel to have all these feelings vanish, instantly, if you get a negative result? But you might be positive! And if you are, every day you put off learning you’re positive is one more day that the medical professionals you’ll need can’t help you. And don’t mistake me: you’ll need their help. Knowing the truth—either way—is the best way to make your situation better.
Breathe. Count to ten.
