The beautiful black-and-white cinematography, the slow-burn Hitchcockian suspense, and the understated acting of the stars (especially Dakota Fanning as the suspicious girlfriend) make this an instant noir classic on the same level as Double Indemnity or The Maltese Falcon.

ok but can you even imagine you and another man share the intense and intensely homosocial experience of being stripped of your power and agency and emasculated and pinned under a voyeuristic eye that transforms you into something alien and violent and vibrant and true as you are forced against one another in a senseless conflict that makes more sense than anything you’ve experienced before and yet despite and because of this you reach out and form a deeper and more meaningful connection with this stranger than you’ve ever found in your life, and then you find out there was a third guy who was ALSO there, just chilling, while you two were doing all that. like what would that even do to your relationship
