both are foreign to the average non-hindustani speaker. why suffer twice? or is the colonial hangover not gone yet? won't that make GoI just another suppressive regime minus the delusion that minority has a say in the workings of this country (which very clearly they don't) :)
Bharat or India, the name doesn't matter. our nation's 'democratic' constitution has always hid pro-colonial agendas in it. I ask, are we really independent? are we really naïve enough enough to believe a common language or culture based on the majority ethnic composition will bring unity in this nation?? (hello? Sri Lankan civil war, Bangladesh liberation war, political instability in Myanmar...) you guys really think it works? is our shared South Asian history not a proof enough to satisfy the Indians' dogmatic mindsets?
also, how does it make us any different from China or Pakistan? we just put a gold cover over an ethnolinguistic genocide and tell the world how proud we are.
over 700 languages (minus the dialects) and we chose a newly created bastard of a tongue, with negligible prior literature, devised and popularised by a British gentleman in Calcutta 'cause they couldn't bother to respect our diversity. And they talk of history lol
ok, i have decided to learn urdu script. so wish me luck. I'll be writing (typing more likely) devanagari and urdu alphabets side by side as a practice.
Humayun's tomb in New Delhi was built by his widow, Bega Begum, who is also known by another name 'Haji Begum'. The name was given to her because of her pilgrimage to Mecca.
After the ascension of Akbar, it was expected that Bega Begum would go live with her stepson but instead, she chose to stay back in Delhi and build her husband's mausoleum. For this task, she had brought back masons and artisans from Arabia and a site was chosen to build the first example of a Mughal Persianate Garden tomb as a mausoleum. The design was exquisite - the first to combine elements of Central Asian architecture with Hindustani elements.
I have filed this mp3 compilation under Funky Chimes. Each of these lps are instrumental or electronica from various countries around the world & represent a new sort of world music. They also are modernized version of 50’s, 60’s exotica lounge music – Lawrence Welk with electronica & disco bpm. Excellent background music while writing or making out. Never dull but never intrusive either.
Funky…
The urge to create a blog for indian poems and shit from before khari became the standard (and kinda killed the others (not as an accident it was cold blooded murder (no shade tho i fucking love urdu literature)))
Another instance of language-based discrimination and how we can stop it
What we need to do:
Stop calling our native languages regional languages. Many of these languages that the Indian government considers 'regional' are spoken or/and are official in countries outside India, thus making them 'international' (Bengali, Tamil, Punjabi etc)
Hindi is a 'regional' language too. It's from the Hindi belt. The Hindi belt is a region. Hindi is regional.
Boycott the term 'Hindustani'. It's misleading. We Bengalis, prior to national movement and even during the national movement, never called ourselves Hindustani. It was a term reserved for the North Indian (Hindi speaking) people. Even writers like Tagore and Sarat Chandra used the term that way, did they not consider themselves Indian?
We are Indians, Bharatiya (Bharotiyo), not Hindustani. Hind is not Hindustan. Bharat is not Hindustan. We don't need to love Hindi to be Indian. What's the point of independence and democracy if I need to lose my culture and language to another, just to call myself Indian. Wake up people... It's high time.
