Walk with me: Visit to a high-elevation red spruce forest. The red spruce (Picea rubens) forest on top of Red Spruce Knob, the ninth highest peak in West Virginia, provides a bittersweet glimpse back in time to the primeval beauty and solitude of such places prior to the arrival of the logging companies in the mid-Nineteenth to early Twentieth centuries. The loggers stripped the mountains bare and set in motion the massive wildfires that burned away everything, including the soil itself, down to solid bedrock. Almost a century later, the forest is regenerating and in some places, such as Red Spruce Knob, has regained the richness and vitality of a healthy boreal ecosystem.

Big Sur Coast Highway is a section of California State Route 1 through the Big Sur region of California that is widely considered to be one of the most scenic driving routes in the United States, if not the world. From top: an unidentified fungi growing in a mossy nook; an impressive young Berkeley's polypore (Bondarzewia berkeleyei), which is not a true polypore but a member of the Russulales order; another massive Berkeley's polypore with my hand for perspective - these beauties can grow up to three feet wide and produce additional shelf-like caps from a single stem, giving them a tiered appearance as they mature; the tall and stately foxglove beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis), whose profusion of tubular white flowers draws hordes of long-tongued bees and hummingbirds from late spring to early summer; common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca), whose large, dangling umbels of pink to purplish flowers are Mother Nature's ultimate pollinator buffets; swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata), also known as rose milkweed, a wetlands-loving beauty with narrow, lanceolate leaves; black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta), an irresistible summer aster with a prominent, dark brown button at the center of its flower head; and the sensual arc of a fireweed (Chamaenerion angustifolium), whose flowers have elongated, dangling stamens and a four-cleft, curling stamen.

May 2023 Mangum Dental Hike of the Month Chiricahua National Monument: Heart of the Rock Big Loop

Distance: 8.7 miles

Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging (rocky, high elevation)

Elevation Gain: 1,817 feet

Parking: There is a parking lot at the Echo Canyon Trailhead, but parking can be limited in the afternoon. There are also picnic tables and restrooms.

Directions: It is time for a road trip. Chiricahua National Monument is a five-hour drive from Prescott. Take I-17 south to Phoenix and get on Interstate 10 heading toward Tucson. Pass Tucson and exit I-10 at Wilcox, exit 336. Take Highway 186 for 38 miles and turn left on AZ Highway 181 driving east for 3 additional miles. The visitor center is another mile or two into the park and the trailhead is near the end of Bonita Canyon Drive.

Summary

The Chiricahua National Monument is located in southeast Arizona 35 miles southeast of Willcox and consists of over 12,000 acres of which 84% is designated as wilderness. The park offers camping, picnic areas, scenic drives, a historic cabin, and many hiking trails. The park is free to enter, but there is a fee to camp. A visitors center is open daily with helpful rangers, information, and an excellent map. The draw to the park includes the amazing rock formations and multiple hiking opportunities. This is also the northern habitat of many Mexican bird species. The most popular and stunning area is the Heart of the Rocks Loop. There are multiple ways to get there, but they all take some effort. Be prepared because many of the hikes start just below 7,000 feet of elevation. There is limited cellular service so download maps before coming into the park. The trails are well-marked, but rocky. Pets are not welcome on the trail nor are bicycles.

To hike the full loop, park at the Echo Canyon Trailhead. Many recommend hiking counter-clockwise. The first part of the trail is probably the least interesting. At the two-mile mark, there is an option of an additional mile out and back (0.5 miles each way) to Inspiration Point. Those that have taken it say that it is worth the extra hike. At the three-mile mark, pass the Big Balanced Rock and then enter the Heart of the Rocks Loop. Take the loop and see the many named rock formations like Pinnacle Balanced Rock, Camel’s Head, Punch and Judy, and my favorite Duck on a Rock. Continue downhill from the loop to the junction with the Lower Rhyolite Canyon Trail. Turn right and head up Echo Canyon (left for an easier way back to the visitor’s center). Some of the most beautiful views are along this stretch up the Canyon to Echo Canyon Grotto. Take a minute to climb through the rocks at the grotto before finishing the last part of the hike back to the trailhead.

We made this hike during spring break with four adults and six children, the youngest was seven years old. Some enjoyed it more than others, but the hearty hikers were invigorated by the experience. Make the trip, you won’t be disappointed.

Roan Highlands Catawba Rhododendron Spring Landscape by Mark Via Flickr: Sunrise Fog & Flowers in the Roan Highlands Mitchell County, Western North Carolina Accessed via the Appalachian Trail from Carver's Gap, TN Date taken: June 15, 2016 Roan Mountain is typically the pinnacle of my year. The Catawba Rhododendron bloom highlights what is likely the most spectacular thing I see and photograph annually. This year was no different. However, a combination of planned and unplanned circumstances had me really chasing my tail around, spending long periods on the highway followed by some poor decisions while in the field that left me exhausted (it's easy to underestimate the importance of keeping yourself fresh mentally and physically if you want to produce). The end result was only two to three days chasing the Catawba Rhododendron this year. Surprisingly, I actually dropped the mountain after this short period feeling really good about what I had seen and what I had captured. I knew that the conditions were difficult--as they always are at Roan--but, I really thought I had done what I needed to present some fantastic scenics from the annual bloom. Upon later inspection, most of my takes are a mess of wind blur and non-optimal lighting. Those that pass the quality inspection--like the one above--are pushing the camera hard with higher isos to stop the constant swaying action of the vegetation as consistent winds blanketed the exposed ridge. All in all, it was a beautiful bloom on Grassy Ridge and another wonderful year of photography in the Roan Highlands. I would be lying if I didn't say that I'm a bit disappointed in myself for the lack of production and the shots that were missed. However, I'm not ever going to complain about spending some time in one of my favorite places!
