498. Doraemon: Nobita and the Haunts of Evil
Tumblr media
4/10
Well, this Doraemon movie is basically in line with my expectations based on the others in the franchise I've seen. Doraemon, Nobita, and their various child associates travel to Africa to investigate a mysterious statue they find via satellite photography, urged on by a mysteriously intelligent white stray dog.
I kept watching for a while in the hopes that there would be some racism to offend me and give me something to talk about, since an African setting seems to invite the Japanese to cultural insensitivity just as eagerly as it does American filmmakers, but there was nothing objectionable in the first half hour, so I gave up.

449. Enchanted Journey (1981)
Tumblr media
5/10
This fairly well-animated children’s anime is about the adventures of a pet chipmunk named Glikko who escapes captivity in order to live in the wild. While at times it seems to want to be a hard-hitting drama along the lines of Watership Down or The Fox and the Hound, the infantile stylings of the animation and writing hold it back.

448. Doraemon: The Record of Nobita: Space Blazer (1981)
Tumblr media
4/10
Nobita, the robot-chaperoned protagonist of this anime children’s series, is visited by a boy his age from another planet, whose spaceship accidentally becomes embedded in the basement of Nobita’s house. Hijinks ensue as Nobita and Doraemon do their best to get him back to his home planet. The animation is standard for a Japanese children’s TV series, which is to say, watchable, but barely.
