Since my big Languages and Linguistics MEGA folder post is approaching 200k notes (wow) I am celebrating with some highlights from my collection:
Africa: over 90 languages so far. The Swahili and Amharic resources are pretty decent so far and I'm constantly on the lookout for more languages and more resources.
The Americas: over 100 languages of North America and over 80 languages of Central and South America and the Caribbean. Check out the different varieties for Quechua and my Navajo followers are invited to check out the selection of Navajo books, some of which are apparently rare to come by in print.
Ancient and Medieval Languages: "only" 18 languages so far but I'm pretty pleased with the selection of Latin and Old/Middle English books.
Asia: over 130 languages and I want to highlight the diversity of 16 Arabic dialects covered.
Australia: over 40 languages so far.
Constructed Languages: over a dozen languages, including Hamlet in the original Klingon.
Creoles: two dozen languages and some materials on creole linguistics.
Europe: over 60 languages. I want to highlight the generous donations I have received, including but not limited to Aragonese, Catalan, Occitan and 6 Sámi languages. I also want to highlight the Spanish literature section and a growing collection of World Englishes.
Eurasia: over 25 languages that were classified as Eurasian to avoid discussions whether they belong in Europe or Asia. If you can't find a language in either folder it might be there.
History, Culture, Science etc: Everything not language related but interesting, including a collection of "very short introductions", a growing collection of queer and gender studies books, a lot on horror and monsters, a varied history section (with a hidden compartment of the Aubreyad books ssshhhh), and small collections from everything like ethnobotany to travel guides.
Jewish Languages: 8 languages, a pretty extensive selection of Yiddish textbooks, grammars, dictionaries and literature, as well as several books on Jewish religion, culture and history.
Linguistics: 15 folders and a little bit of everything, including pop linguistics for people who want to get started. You can also find a lot of the books I used during my linguistics degree in several folders, especially the sociolinguistics one.
Literature: I have a collection of classic and modern classic literature, poetry and short stories, with a focus on the over 140 poetry collections from around the world so far.
Polynesia, Micronesia, Melanesia: over 40 languages and I want to highlight the collection for Māori, Cook Islands Māori and Moriori.
Programming Languages: Not often included in these lists but I got some for you (roughly 5)
Sign Languages: over 30 languages and books on sign language histories and Deaf cultures. I want to highlight especially the book on Martha's Vineyard Sign Language and the biography of Laura Redden Searing.
Translation Studies: Everything a translation student needs with a growing audiovisual translation collection
And the best news: the folders are still being updated regularly!

Forest spirits and natives (3)
Menehune - Legendary dwarves who live in the deep forests of Hawaii
Menehune are a mythological race of dwarf people in tradition who are said to live in the deep forests and hidden valleys of the Hawaiian Islands, hidden and far away from human settlements.
The Menehune are described as superb craftspeople. They built temples (heiau), fishponds, roads, canoes, and houses. Some of these structures that Hawaiian folklore attributed to the Menehune still exist. They are said to have lived in Hawaii before settlers arrived from Polynesia many centuries ago. Their favorite food is the maiʻa (banana), and they also like fish. Legend has it that the Menehune appear only during the night hours to build masterpieces. But if they fail to complete their work in the length of the night, they’ll leave it unoccupied. No one but their children and humans connected to them can see the Menehune.
While archaeologists have never found remains of a distinctively small race of ancient people in Hawaii, many think the Menehune legend may well have a basis in fact. In 2003, a species of dwarf human was discovered on the Indonesian island of Flores. Homo floresiensis was only about 1 meter in height and fully bipedal. The skull has human-like teeth with a receding forehead and no chin.
Fossils have been discovered from 38,000 to 18,000 years ago, though archeological evidence suggests it lived on Flores between at least 95,000 and 13,000 years ago. It used stone tools and fire, and hunted pygmy elephants, Komodo dragons, and the giant rats found on Flores. Its discoverers believe that h. floresiensis is a dwarf form of Homo erectus. It is not uncommon for dwarf forms of large mammals to evolve on islands. Modern humans arrived on Flores between 55,000 and 35,000 years ago, and presumably interacted with h. floresiensis (Refrence: “The Three Menehune of Ainahou (Maui)” by Charles Kauluwehi Maxwell Sr).

Nationality: Polynesian (French Polynesia)
Languages known: French, English, Tahitian
Voice claim: Cardi B
Theme name: madam president
APPEARANCE
Tumblr media
PERSONALITY
Pina Colada appears to be a joyful, carefree, slightly naive person. On her island, she promotes personal freedoms, from being allowed to dress however you want to having very little laws and rules in place, with harmful behaviors being an exception. She is, however, very serious about her island’s safety, seeing the JoFoes as serious problems, and is ready to deal with them harshly. Pina Colada is also a secretive person, never disclosing much of her biography.
STAND: QUEEN OF WHITE LIES
Type: Close-Range Non-sentient Natural Humanoid
Queen of White Lies possesses certain physical strength and great speed of movement. The Stand is able to distort space, making its user disappear into an empty fourth dimension and travel safely through it. Pina Colada’s speed remains the same, so it is far from teleportation. Other people can’t find the pocket dimension it creates with anything but a Stand.
Queen of White Lies is a non-verbal, silent Stand. Opening the hidden dimension sounds like the sound of a page turning.
TRIVIA
Favorite color: cream white Favorite food: tacos

Postcards from Snagglepuss
Evening of the dolphin (as it were)
Having learned pretty much how not to interact with dolphins (as in the sterile and aseptic atmosphere of a dolphinarium like Theater of the Sea), Peter Potamus and yours truly took an evening just before sunset at the fomer's dive retreat off the Florida Keys and decided to have some serious delphinic interaction. As in the kind which expects the dolphin to swim up close and personal unto you while kneeling in the shallows of the Atlantic, with a sort of breeze making things a little more wonderful.
Oh, and did I mention where we were wearing ourselves essentially?
"Snag, old buddy," as Peter explained it, "such a meet-up with dolphins like we're about to have is basically in the style I've been accustomed to in the uncharted regions of Polynesia. Like the natives there have enjoyed it ... and happen to like it."
"But at least the water feels rather mild," I chimed in just as a couple of female dolphins sensed our interest in swimming towards shore at a gentle clip, you might say. The two approached our party rather casual like, sensing us as perhaps wanting of some caressing on their part.
Peter exclaimed "I suppose you still recall those dolphins in that atoll we had the diving experience in that one time!" as he started to stroke and caress this one particular female dolphin around her face and the underside of her jaw ... and by her vocalising, she seemed to appreciate such company. Not to mention Peter Potamus' hidden charm offensive proving itself welcoming to the dolphin.
As for the dolphin who felt attracted to me, her orchestrations were more of a purring sort of sound--awwwwwwww, awwwwwww--as if she saw me as a would-be lover kneeling on the shallows of the ocean shore, my forepaws closely stroking and caressing her underside and her cheeks. It was as if the dolphin was telling me just how passionate my feelings for her were, and wanted me to somehow return the favour sometime beyond the reefs offshore; her purring was suggesting as much.
As well, such brought up on Peter Potamus' part much in the way of memories about swimming with native (and yet naked) Polynesian natives in a natural and unabashed way ("And I do mean natural AND unabashed, Snagglepuss! It just seems as if those dolphins and those natives have an equal and magical romance between the two such as excuses those dolphins being quite the diving companions ... not to mention teaching the natives just how natural and magical sex can actually be!")
"So I understand."
"After all," Peter added, "dolphins like using sex as a way of building friendships! It may seem weird and bizarre, but believe you me, with dolphins ... it's just how they like it!"
"And I take it the natives play along."
"And do THEY!!"
At any rate, such a converse continued as we were still sensing a most natural interaction, interreaction even, with those dolphins, as that magical sort of blue hour approached ... sign for quite the gathering around the firepit, quite the storytelling time even!!

Nature & Environment – French Polynesia
Tumblr media
Welcome to the enchanting realm of French Polynesia, a paradise where azure waters meet lush landscapes. This guide explores four compelling reasons to visit, especially for unforgettable Bora Bora holidays: the exceptional marine life, iconic overwater bungalows, dramatic natural landscapes, and the rich Polynesian culture deeply connected to this breathtaking environment. Dive into a world of unparalleled beauty and cultural richness.
Exceptional Marine Life
French Polynesia’s marine environment is a treasure trove of biodiversity, making it a premier destination for underwater enthusiasts. The region, encompassing one of the world’s largest exclusive economic zones, boasts crystal-clear waters with visibility extending up to 30 meters, ideal for observing the vibrant marine life. The coral reefs here are among the most diverse and pristine globally, sheltering over 1,000 fish species. This underwater mosaic is not just a feast for the eyes; it’s a vital part of the ecological balance, supporting a myriad of marine organisms.
These waters are a sanctuary for large pelagic species, such as sharks, rays, and dolphins, offering a rare opportunity for close encounters with these majestic creatures. Seasonal migrations add to the spectacle, with species like humpback whales visiting the warm Polynesian waters to breed and calve. The rich marine biodiversity isn’t confined to the deep; even in the shallows, snorkelers can witness a bustling world of colourful reef fish, starfish, and clams. For those interested in marine conservation, many islands offer educational tours and conservation programs, providing insight into efforts to preserve this underwater paradise.
Iconic Overwater Bungalows
The overwater bungalow is a signature feature of French Polynesia, epitomising luxury and connection with the natural environment. These iconic structures, often thatched-roof and built with traditional materials, stand on stilts over the turquoise lagoon waters, offering guests direct access to the ocean. Waking up to the sound of gentle waves and being able to dive straight into the ocean from your private deck is an experience unmatched in most travel destinations.
The design of these bungalows harmoniously blends with the environment, often featuring glass floor panels, known as ‘Tahitian television,’ providing a window to the vibrant marine life below. This intimate connection with nature doesn’t compromise comfort, as the bungalows are equipped with modern luxuries and offer unparalleled privacy. The experience of staying in an overwater bungalow allows for a seamless blend of relaxation and immersion in the natural beauty of the islands, making it a must-do for any visitor to French Polynesia.
Dramatic Landscapes
Beyond its aquatic allure, French Polynesia is graced with dramatically diverse landscapes. Islands like Moorea and Tahiti are not just about idyllic beaches; they boast rugged, green mountains rising steeply from the ocean. These islands offer a network of trails, winding through lush rainforests and leading to breathtaking vistas. Hiking in these areas, one can experience the islands’ verdant interior, encounter unique flora and fauna, and gain a new perspective on the vast Pacific Ocean.
The volcanic origins of these islands contribute to their dramatic topography. Ancient calderas, steep valleys, and soaring peaks tell a geological story millions of years in the making. Exploring these landscapes, visitors can find hidden waterfalls, tranquil rivers, and serene gardens. The natural beauty of these islands extends beyond their shores, offering a rich tapestry of experiences for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

THE BLUE, BEAUTIFUL WORLD by Karen Lord
RELEASE DATE: Aug. 29, 2023
A tale of hidden aliens and first contact on an Earth in crisis.
In the near future, Owen (famous enough for one name only) is the biggest pop star in the world. Owen’s overwhelming appeal is something more than just charisma, though, as it’s slowly revealed that he and members of his entourage are visitors from another planet, watching as Earth struggles with climate change and population collapse. Virtual reality is everywhere, both as entertainment and as thin fabric masks people use to disguise their identities (alien and human alike). More than a decade later, Kanoa Havili is a student representing the Federated States of Polynesia in Havana at a World Council Global Government Project, akin to a Model U.N. With his fellow students from around the planet, they’re given a challenge to solve—what if an extraterrestrial civilization came to Earth?—but in the midst of working this out, it’s revealed that everything they’ve been studying is real. Now Kanoa and friends have to navigate a first-contact situation with a powerful ally on their side: Owen. Unfortunately, other than a thin character list buried at the back, readers are given no indication that this book takes place in the larger universe of Lord’s Cygnus Beta series, and as a result, the book reads like overly long fan fiction of a show you’ve never heard of. This wouldn’t be an issue if it were better written, with some deft recapping woven into the narrative, but instead, readers have to try to piece together who’s an alien, who’s not, and who all these other civilizations are. Meanwhile, the book is glutted with secondary characters, adding little to the story besides confusion, and offers some cringey adolescent sentences like “His look varied from the delicate, waiflike freshness of a teen idol to the grizzled, whipcord-and-washboard toughness of a decades-seasoned rock star…” or “The salt breeze in intermittent puffs like shy kisses, telling a lie of warmth that the sea would soon dispel.”
An intergalactic fumble.
