So when he turns to face the newcomer, he's ready for anything. Almost anything. Definitely not the cop who had showed up at their old house because if nosy neighbors.

He'd learned his lesson since then, moved them to a street where the houses were much farther apart and nobody cared.

A smile stretches his lips, a fake thing to appease the other man, and he nods. "Officer. Can I help you?"
