Not that many people might be aware of this, but the Dutch used to control what is now Malaysia and Singapore for almost 183 years, between 1641-1825. The Dutch acquired Malacca (as it was called) from the Portugese after kicking them out. Compared to their Indonesian neighbour's, the Dutch rule in Malacca was a bit more peaceful, mainly due to a treaty between them and the Johor Sultanate.
