Αμέσως το Boeing περιστρέφεται μέσα σε στροβιλώδη ρεύματα νεφών, την ίδια στιγμή το κόκπιτ φωτίζεται επειδή πέφτει η νύχτα, σκέτη πίσσα, κι ακούγεται ��νας τρομερός πάταγος: εκατοντάδες τεράστιοι χαλαζόκοκκοι γαζώνουν τα τζάμια, αφήνοντας εδώ κι εκεί χαρακιές στο γυαλί ασφαλείας. Λίγες στιγμές που μοιάζουν δίχως τέλος και, παρά τις ριπές του ανεμοστρόβιλου, το Boeing ξαναβρίσκει το ανοδικό θερμό ρεύμα και λίγη άνωση· αυτή τη φορά, είναι μια έντονη αίσθηση συντριβής όπως στο μεγάλο οχτάρι.

Sass Talks Books: The Anomaly by Hervé Le Tellier; translated by Adriana Hunter

Basic Plot: The book opens with vignettes from very different people's lives - a hitman, a lawyer, a ten-year-old girl. The only thing they seem to have in common is a flight they all took with a bad storm. And then we see the story of the storm, and a very unexpected outcome as the plane flies out the other side...

My thoughts: This was fascinating to read back-to-back with Project Hail Mary because it had almost the opposite problem for me. While Project Hail Mary was fascinating sci-fi with flat narration, this was richly textured narration with flat sci-fi.

The Anomaly was pitched to me as a beautifully written sci-fi/thriller, but it's got a lot more DNA of a literary novel, I think. It's slow, thoughtful, and while it does pick up significantly once it actually gets to telling the story of the plane in the storm, it stays an meditative piece, with an interesting third-person narrator. It was a close third, veering into omnipotent third occasionally. It was well-crafted, and deeply introspective.

It was not, unfortunately, very good sci-fi. It's a philosophical logic-puzzle of a book, and while there are scientists trying to do scientist-y things, there is no experimentation. They just all have a think and then throw their hands up in the air and say, well it's probably this theory and we'll never prove it so what can we do!? The book was so busy trying to tell these close, personal stories, it completely lost me on the broader world.

The book also felt very...written by a guy. A guy who is trying and probably thinks he's treating his women characters well. But the men have their own stories, and the women's stories are (thinks) yeah, I think they're all about dealing with men. It's not framed as a good thing, but the story still has a lot of men seeing women as objects and women being in love. I bounced off the spirit of the narration, and the narrator's view of the world, hard.

However, it's an entertaining book if you can overcome the aforementioned misogyny and you want an introspective, philosophical work with a sci-fi flavor. I see why it's so popular! I am probably going to think about it for awhile.

One note - I listened to it on audio, and I wouldn't recommend it. I wanted to flip back and forth and reference names and dates more, and the narrator was solid with male voices, but his female characters all sounded vaguely the same. (Also, In a vaguely trigger warning sort of way, the American President is mentioned several times, never by name, but it is clear that it's Trump. So, uh, be forewarned that's waiting. The audiobook narrator, unfortunately, has a decent Trump impression, and it was an awkward moment of being startled while out shopping).
