Friday, December 8: Scorpions, "Love on the Run"
Savage Amusement was both underthought and overcooked: coming off two big sellers that brought them major international popularity, Scorpions didn’t seem to put much effort into their new music (and barely any into their lyrics) but apparently felt that slathering on a whole mess of post-Hysteria production gloop would be the feature that both covered for their sins and made them sound “hi tech”.  At least, that’s what one would hypothesize when hearing the shockingly OTT drumming on “Love On the Run”, which was one of maybe two actual metal tunes on the record: although Herman Rarebell was more than adequate behind the kit, it wouldn’t be the least bit shocking if it turned out the frantic precision of the percussion came from a drum machine.  This was very much the Scorps playing as fast as they could to both try to retain some metal cred and also hide the fact that there wasn’t much of a song to speak of, and even if ended up a highlight in relation to most of the dreck that cluttered Savage Amusement, “Love On the Run” was empty calories.
