Where the hell is Sakae Esuno’s “Railway Angel”?
If you look into Sakae Esuno’s bibliography, you’ll see that his first big break came in 2001 when he submitted a one-shot manga to Kadokawa’s annual manga contest that earned him a prize recognizing him as an up-and-coming rookie mangaka to watch.
The manga he submitted was titled 鉄道天使, aka “Tetsudo Tenshi” — or, in English, “Railway Angel.” The award he was given was “エース&ネクスト新人漫画賞奨励賞を”, which translates to something like “Ace & Next Rookie Manga Award Encouragement Award.” (...I realize this reference dates me, but yo dawg I herd you like awards)
The winners of these annual awards are supposed to always be published in one of Kadokawa’s manga magazines that year. Not all at once, mind you — they tend to just put out one winner here and one winner there, all spaced over months throughout the year. And if this one-shot story of his was good enough to get Esuno noticed by Kadokawa and helped earn him the right to pitch “Hanako” a few years later? I’d sure as hell like to see it and read it for myself!
But as you probably figured from the headline up there, THAT’S THE PROBLEM. I can’t seem to find “Railway Angel” anywhere. At all. I’m certainly not seeing online publications or scans or anything. Furthermore, I can’t even figure out WHAT issue of WHICH Kadokawa publication it might be in!!
ETA: I finally found out that this story dropped in the September 2001 issue of the now-defunct Monthly Ace Next (月刊少年エース).
I understand that I’m sitting here asking to find a single story contained in a single issue of one unknown, Japanese, Kadokawa-published manga magazine from 21 fucking years ago, and that’s kind of a tall order. Especially when you’re not even located in the same hemisphere as the publication’s origin. :P
But I’d really appreciate any help that ANYONE out there can provide on finding this thing.

Fun and Modded Games with 035, Or... Did You Just Caboose Me? So Wrong, Dude.
My first test with 035 aka Dyo. Just little ol me, the Possesive Mask, and a modded to hell copy of a quasipopular 4 v everyone zombie shooter. What can go wrong? Everything.
Well, it's time to meet the Possesive Mask, for a few "friendly" games. 035 walks in, and sees me setting up my gaming rig. If he could raise an eyebrow, he would have.
"What's going on? I was told I'd be testing. Didn't expect to test with 049's girl."
"Yeah... it's not really an official official test. And I thought since the Doctor is important to me, thought we should actually meet on less formal terms." I smile, extend a hand. "I'm Rabbit, nice to finally meet you, Dyo. Wanna blow up some boomers?"
"Boomers?"
"Big, nasty explody undead bastards. It'll be fun, I promise. And, since we're not being overly monitored, feel free to swear at the lumbering sacks of boom and acid."
I fire up the game, hand him an extra controller. And... break out laughing. My dumb ass forgot to switch off my mods. So, the shamblers are all Bernie Sanders, the spitters are dilophasaurs, the boomers are all the heavy from Team Fortress 2, and the witches... are the most demented version of Princess Peach ever seen. Hell, I still left my character mods on, meaning I'm stuck as a neon green Amongus and Dyo is... Caboose from Red vs Blue. Our weapons are modded, Dyo running with the BFG 1000 from Doom, I picked dual plasma cutters. Our online teammates are modded up too, 'Sarcasm&4Gauges' is ready to wreck shit as Lord Heisenberg from RE Village, and our last teammate is fucking Sailor Moon. Yes, Usagi is in the house. We get to it. After an initial learning curve, Dyo is on it. He took out Peach one shot. Massive legend. But... not without cost. My Amongus died, after Sailor Moon shot me in the back. Twice.
"Ayo, Sailor Moon? You Caboosed my ass. So wrong, my dude. Don't hate on your squaddie for being better as a rook than you, not our fault you suck with aiming."
"Kiss my disco medallion. Not my fault YOU were in my way."
Dyo pipes up. "Dr. Bright? Don't you have more rules to break before they're written? Teamkilling is almost as low as teabagging. Get your worthless ass back to Crystal Tokyo, heard Queen Beryl is on her bullshit again." Sarcasm&4Gauges loses it on the in-game chat.
"Damn, that was both thematic and cold as fuck, dawg. I can see why 049 chills with you. Savage."
"We do work well together, kind of a Beauty and the Beast deal. Of course, I'm the Beauty."
"Not in this chat, Dyo. Rabbit be fiiiiiine."
"And the Killer Rabbit is good with her honey. Back off her, Jack. Go perv on Rights again."
"Damn, Cleffy be dropping bodies without a shot. Thanks, Uncle Alto. Nice spot job on the herd of Bernies. Not into that kind of getting ate out."
We're back on our zombie slaying grind when... a wild tank appears, modded into a mini 682. Clef dies laughing on mic.
"Maybe I need to chill with the mods, the prospect of soloing a mini 682 brought out Clef's Scooby-Doo villain for real. Oh shit... Caboose dropped the BFG, Clef grab that big fucking gun and get nutty with it."
"Naw, Rabbit. I'm gonna Thor this punk ass. Time to drop the hammer." Clef runs up, the wind up is good... but mini 682 tail-yeets his ass into a wall. Dyo nods at me, and I drop a nice little surprise... a Juggernaught from COD. I toggle on theme music, Dyo pumps his BFG, and we see who kills the Unkillable Lizard first. Just as Dyo lobs the first volley, an Enderman pops up behind him, ready to drag him off. I shoot him with my cutters, Ender fall down, go immobile. Bright is back up... throwing his fucking tiara at 682. Who just laughs in 'what part of hard-to-fucking-KILL do you not get, bitch?' He drops like a bad habit after getting stomped. After several rounds of fire, multiple revives, and several death threats against Dr. Bright for friendly fire, the big scaly butt-ugly undead asshole dies.
"I don't even want to play this game anymore."
"Fine by us, Jack. You suck."
"Yeah, well at least I'm not cuddling up to 049."
"You. Did. Not. Just. Besmerch. The. Doctor's. Rabbit. If I get out of Containment, I am going to curbstomp both you and that tacky as hells medallion into the next reality. And not even 343 will save you. Be ready."
"Dyo, chill. Let me handle him. I have a plan."
"Please tell me you're going to freeze his mouth shut."
"Of course not. Why debase high magic for such low intellect?" I give Dyo an evil grin, and mute my mic. "First, I've arranged a nice Tinder date for him, and he won't even have to leave site. I know a young lady who would love having him over for dinner. Then, after dinner... how about a nice 963 under 60 meters of ice, floating in deep space? Far, far away from our galaxy."
"Rabbit, you're cold-blooded, evil, vindictive... and too bad 049 met you first. I'm honestly impressed."
"I learned at the sandaled feet of THE masters of dirty tactics, 076-2 and Clef. Let's just say I'm rolling the Mastermind perks up in here 24/7. After all, you gotta bring your A game to even match Abel. And Clef? Dude literally wrote the book on reality warpers, and I paid attention. After all, it's hard to learn much from the dead, let alone as one of them." I sense my new gaming buddy is a bit nervous. "Tell you what, you play a few rounds of Modern Warfare with me, we'll call it a non-aggession pact. Hey, maybe we can stomp Bright on and offline, heh?"
"Non-aggression pact? Meaning?"
"You don't kill me or 049 attempting to bail, I look the other way as much as I can. Maybe accidentally drop a few helpful items."
"I'll think about it."
"The pact, or the game?"
"The pact. I honestly like playing with you, you're in it to win via chaos. Very entertaining."
"Thanks, Dyo. You're pretty good yourself." I turn my mic back on. "So, gents... who's up for COD?" Clef opts in, but Bright backs out.
"You bailing, Bright? Can't handle playing unmodded?" Clef teases him.
"More like I can't deal with Rabbit. She's brutal, more so than Mongolian death metal, and she scares me."
"Can I train, or can I train? Not my fault you got no game, zero drip, and lo! No maidens."
"Why are you guys so mean to me?"
"Uh... my dude. You. Have. An. Over. 800. Item. List. Of. Things. You. Specifically. Are. Forbidden. To. Do. Do you really need us to tell you that alone got you disinvited from ALL official functions not directly related to your job? Plus, you have all the culture of garden soil 073 danced on."
"Ouch. That wounds me, 035."
"I have not yet begun to wound you, you backshooting idiot. Now, get off our server." Sonic rings, then a message: Admin Clef has booted G04tedwth963 from the server. "Thank you, Doctor Clef. You get dibs on my first care package should I die before getting it."
"The other team better pray to 343 it's not a gunship."

What stays with us when all else settles
Am I gonna be most comfortable with a squishmallow under my right foot for the rest of my life? Am I gonna rely on my left foot to be the one to stabilize every moment I balance from here on out? Am I gonna stay attached to the mobility aids like a kid going home with a prized toy from school. Are my crutches going to stay in the family like a new pet rock that lives on the window sill and suddenly finds itself part of the atmosphere.
What will stay with me once all this is over?
What stayed with us after we first heard “quarantine" and promises of “it’s only two weeks more.” What stays with us now as we see people walk down the streets in masks. Why wasn’t that normalized in one country when others normalize mask wearing when you have the common cold. Will we stay forever herding toilet paper in case another lockdown is called? What will we think about as those of us who remember being in states with a curfew? Or people who lived near the capital and everyone who saw it being filmed from the comfort of home. How do we comfort ourselves after something so horrendous is shown such as that?
How have black people given themselves self love since learning about how slavery affects their family now. How have Jewish people recovered from the Holocaust. What about Japanese people and the internment camps they were confined to compared how their food is so popular in the same cities they were once chained in.
What about the portrayal of mafia families always being stereotyped “gangster" and they’re always non American or British people but when we finally see an American family or British group that models a Mafia in media it’s twice as sinister. Colonialism got us good, ehh?
Why are the Mafia always portrayed as people in athleisure and chains of gold and silver, pure of course. Why are they always opulent and greedy and the embodiment of that deadly sin and why. Why is it always latin people. Cholos. Or black people, the OG dawg. Why did they rename dog and why is it stupid to hear a white person use it? Why are mafia also Bostonians? The Irish lost the luck there. Russian people from old country con their babushkas da? Or when Asian people have gangs their the Yakuza and nothing more. Kill bill got the rest.
Why. Why? Just, why.
And natives would never but respect that you’re not welcome on their land. and Canada is too busy making the best maple syrup and actually doing what Americans should have done from the beginning. Switzerland, we’ll, maybe their just bystanders. Who’s to say?
But now what. Where do we go from here? And what stays with us while we do?

Yellowstone Pt. 2
August 11-15
After getting our permit for our first night in Yellowstone, we continued our route through town to resupply and hit the post office. Then we took the bike path out to meet the “red line,” or official CDT. The bike path was extremely new and part of it was unfinished. While on the path, we met the project engineer! Back on trail, there was not a lot of water to be had. We crossed from Montana into Idaho, then camped off the side of the road.
The next day, we continued up the dirt roads until we hit trail and soon after reached the Yellowstone National Park boundary. We walked through a burned forest and valley and eventually got to Summit Lake Campground, where we stayed. Owen still wasn’t feeling well.
I’m the morning, Owen was really having a rough time. Usually the one rushing us to get going, Owen requested more time to rest in the tent. He was quite sick. Finally we got going and walked slowly. Owen had to take several breaks and even laid down while I made him peppermint tea for his stomach. We ran into some northbounders who asked how we were doing, and Owen answered honestly. It turned out that one of the pair, Skitch, was a newly retired doctor. He asked Owen lots of detailed questions about his symptoms, what he’d been prescribed before, etc. Skitch was pretty sure Owen had Giardia. We were worried about getting the right prescription, because we weren’t near any major medical centers. Skitch revealed that he had extra of the top recommended prescription and gave it to Owen. He also gave him some anti-nausea pills, because one of the side effects of the other meds was nausea. The trail provides!! Thanks Skitch! Owen took the dose immediately and we continued on. We went to Biscuit Basin and then on to the the Old Faithful geyser basins. We hung out at the Old Faithful Inn long enough to eat some large servings of ice cream, then we hitched down to Grant Village, where we’d left off with Liam, Julia, and E-Dawg. In Grant Village, we got a tent site, did laundry, and showered. In the morning, Owen felt much better, so we hit up the breakfast buffet to fill his depleted tank. Then we got some more permits and hit the trail.
We hiked out to Heart Lake, which was lovely. On the way, we took a side “trail” that disappeared quickly. That took us through many thermal features, including a spot with a small waterfall next to steaming hot springs. We had to be careful where we walked, though, because we dipped our toes in some hot marshy areas. Finally we got to the lake and stopped to play some cribbage. We continued on to Basin Creek Campground, which a ranger told us is one of the most remote sites. Near that site, we ran into a pair of sand hill cranes, which make a call that sounds like a mix between loons, peepers, and the rhythmic pulse of a woodpecker. The birds circled us repeatedly on foot and flying. It was a bizarre experience. Were they being territorial? Herding us somewhere? Playing a game or doing a mating dance? They finally stopped circling us and we got to the campsite. There were a great tent site and food site, although the food site had several piles of bear poop right near it. Based on the size of the turd piles, we assume it was a black bear.
The next day, we hiked out of Yellowstone. We took a route west of the official trail in order to drop down into the Grand Tetons. We had a few river crossings and our first views of the Teton range. We got to Flagg Ranch, where we picked up a package we’d sent ourselves then started into the Targhee national forest, where we camped near a river.

Intellivision Q&A. (Long post.)
Would Intellivision look to finishing 1980s prototypes and unreleased titles for Amico?
BAHAHAHA! As if. Their lead technical engineer couldn't even get a happy birthday to work. (This is a feature many programs have had since the introduction of real time clock chips, dating back over 20 years, if we use Dōbutsu no Mori as a marker.) It'd be beyond their technical skill to get raw CP1600 code running on a doorbell sensor.
When can we expect the new IP licensing partnership deals and releases?
Sometime between never and the heat death of the universe. They screwed every opportunity and dropped their Tin Goose, which was Earthworm Jim. If even that was pulled, what licensees would one imagine they managed to keep?
How many people work at Intellivision after the significant reduction in size? What's left to test?
How many people actually did any work to begin with? The number of people left working at Intellivision is -1d20 their current LinkedIn posting. As for what's left to test: Literally everything until their certifications are in the public as verified.
What would the general process be for Unity developers to publish their games in Amico format?
Forget about it. With the way Unity is going, it's going to be a dead engine in a few years. Look into one of many open source toolkits and have fun in an engine that isn't active spyware or working against you.
Will the founder edition units be produced?
On what foundation? As far as anyone who knows what they're talking about can tell, the Amico never managed to grift past the prototype phase.
Is Earthworm Jim 4 still in active development?
Perhaps. On the Amico? Naw dawg, that ship sailed like a floater down the toilet. What a surprise occurrence when a company failed to produce anything of note given an excess of time.
Will the new revisited Amico games be exclusive to the Amico console, or Will they be available also in other platforms selling IPs?
Considering that most of the games shown were never original in the first place, this question is as surprising as it is daft. More to the point, just where exactly would a standalone digital version of Farkle sell?
Will the console and games be available to order worldwide?
Well, let's see: The EU Shopify store is...still down, (2022-08-02) and international products standards being what they are, there's a few pesky steps the Amico has yet to fulfill. No export is ever going to occur unless they fulfill them.
Are there other hardware quality issues that can’t be fixed by a download update?
Existing would be good Step 1. Any other hardware issues were introduced at the design stage and would require a thorough overhaul of the design to fix. And to think, this thing was supposed to look like a sports car.
Is the hardware being altered/upgraded since the quiet period began, or is the console still the same as it was previously?
Do you realize just how long it'd take to walk back any of Mr. Tallarico's grandiose, ambitious, monumental, intrepid, extravagant, and flamboyant design decisions this late in the game? And with what money? It's 17m+ debt!
How many games are currently in active development for Amico?
I'll give you a number between 0:0 and you'll have to guess the number.
How many games are in a finished state?
Generously speaking, it'd be beyond shocking if the braindead dice game that was bundled with every shovelware CD since their introduction wasn't feature complete, but optimized is another bag of cats to herd. At least a few are by technical definition, "Complete".
Is the plan for the system to get support and new games for multiple years? Or will a release with 10-20 initial games be all we should realistically expect?
They've gotten this far treating the Amico like a child in dire need of Social Services protection, so expect the "Gone for cigarettes/milk" approach for the foreseeable service life of the Amico.
Could games designed for Amico come to other consoles as limited timed releases to boost money for Amico and then become Amico exclusives thereafter?
If by Limited Time, you mean "Indefinite release" and by "Money Boost" you mean "pittance", then sure, theoretically.
When can we expect classic INTV games released on other platforms?
When people start to care about games that were released before the Family Computer again. Let me ask the finest oracle I know: Outlook not Good. Damn, the database must have corrupted again.
What will happen to the physical media and the data that's on those RFID cards? Will there be a way to have it redeemed?
Considering all that was on the RFID cards was a glorified URL, the data is likely hosed when the hosting goes down. Buy nonexistant games, win nonexistant prizes.
Will the pack-in games be on the hard drive or will they need to be redeemed on an online storefront also?
It's incredibly cute that someone thinks that what should be 20 megabytes of games would even deign to require a hard drive of any kind. If the pack in games were ever completed, they would have likely existed within the flash memory of the system or a physical SD card if INTV really wanted to cheap out.
Will we finally see more about the buttons and discs that attach to screens?
This was a thing? And someone thought this was a good idea?  Supposing all the wrong lessons were learned from the Wii/DS generation.
Will we see more deep dive videos on YouTube?
You can watch more deep dive videos on NOAA's Ocean Explorer Channel. Next question.
Can we see the new Night Stalker playing on an Amico please?
No.
Will our Golden Tickets ever do anything?
They can be redeemed with the Federal Trade Commission for a free consolation prize in the shape of embarrassing Intellivision staff for violating the very clear regulations regarding contests and sweepstakes.
What kind of communication can we expect in the near future?
I realize that it has been literal years since anyone has heard a POTS line off-hook tone, but try to imagine that.
Who is the company producing the hardware?
In trying to ascertain this question, all that was found was a hastily erased spot where the manufacturing label should be. Shrug.
Does "classic IP" means only the old Intellivision games or does it also include retro-reimagined games based on these classic IP?
Well, that depends. Do you count Bomberman with the serial numbers filed off? Or perhaps another way, how many of Tallirico's pie in the sky promises could one feel confident in suggesting he perused further lines of contact with?
Will the leadership of Intellivision return to become more active in this group?
As soon as Phil Adams is back from his time at the Westminster Towers in Orlando, with absolute certainty he'll get back on top of the social media page that totally wasn't left in the hands of some now long gone intern who checked out months ago when the cheque bounced.
Have studios continued developing with all the hardware delays?
Any studio worth their spit would be insane to continue development for a zero sum game. What would be the potential benefit at this point? The audience potential alone is a boggling 3...full stop.
Are there any games that have been discontinued?
Does that include the games that were promised under a false pretense or only games which had actually been confirmed to actually exist?
Are there still plans to release most of the original Intellivision to the Amico?
I don't know who fielded this question, and the reply given from the first prompt still stands. Do you really want to see a clunky and terrible version of [checks} Soccer blown up to 1080p?
Does "servicing partners" mentioned in the announcement include founders?
Sorry, there seems to have been a misunderstanding. Servicing partners refers to the various establishments Mr. Tallarico visited in Nevada. To actually try this question: Doubtful. This likely is referencing various contractual obligations as stated within agreements of the various platforms they got monkey paw investors from. 100 units owed to Republic/Fig, who knows what else.
What is the status of the signed Founders Edition?
As verifiability extant as Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster.
If funding has not been met, how long can we expect to wait for an update outlining this?
Consider there is already extensive & exhaustive documentation regarding this matter provided by the Securities & Exchanges Commission.
How are the team and leadership holding up?
Guido Henkel will tell you of his mental status as soon as he returns from an unrelated vacation to various exotic and expensive vistas. As for the rest, it isn't as if their various social media pages are private. Why don't you visit John Alvarado's Facebook sometime and...OH DEAR ODIN, JOHN DID ANYONE TEACH YOU WHAT PUBLIC RELATIONS ARE?!
If I don’t get a reply from them [for refund] how can I take action against them?
See also: The question regarding the Pyrite Ticket sweepstakes and/or a dispute with your payee service of choice.
[Submitter's note: Feel free to edit this for better readability. The attempt was made to give honest, if snarky replies that are at the very least, not absolute ghosting of the questions asked. Double sidenote: All questions intact as formatted, Grammar is as Written.]
