SALT will cleanse your house better than any sage will. Put some salt in the palm of your hand and pray over it. Then throw it all around your house, especially around your bed or the enterance to your home. This will keep out unwanted visitors and spirits.

Fascinating flora, special edition.
White Sage
I am still doing a regular post about sage in general, but as a conservationist and student of ethnobotany, I wanted to address the conservation status and history of salvia apiana in particular.
White sage is endemic to Southern California and parts of Northern Baja, and is a valuable medicinal and cultural resource to indigenous populations who were forcibly relocated to these areas. Today, the majority of white sage is cultivated by indigenous Americans on protected land.
Smudging refers to a variety ceremonies that involve the burning of sacred herbs. The British, Spanish, and French colonizers started to relocate indigenous people, to wash away their culture, take their children, and erase their languages. Smudging is an English word that was used to generalize and belittle a widely held set of spiritual practices, and has now been reclaimed by many indigenous communities.
The use of this plant by non native people, and the misappropriation of the word ‘smudging’ came much later, around the time the first legal protections were established to protect the remaining people and culture. “In the 1960s, the hippie movement co-opted the use of white sage and evolved into the New Age Movement.” (Ramirez, Rose & Small, Deborah)
The popularity of white sage has only gotten higher, and with a boom in demand, illegal harvesting of the plant has become all to common a practice. “With very few commercial growers of white sage (Salvia apiana), the vast majority of products are wild-harvested.” (Ramirez & Small)
“What I learned when I was in California and visited the Etiwanda Preserve was that it is the epicenter of the current commercial harvest.” (Leopold, Susan).
“What is important to stress is that this underground sage mafia is not ethical or sustainable wildcrafting as it is portrayed in hipster IG accounts and stores! The scale of white sage commercial trade on the Internet and demand in China is alarming” (Leopold).
“I was invited by the owner of a white sage company to meet at the Etiwanda Preserve in March of 2019; he wanted to show his sustainable harvesting methods. I quickly pulled out my phone to show him that it was against the law to do so, and that recent arrests had been made. He carried on as if that was not the case” (Leopold).
The current elemental status of white sage is G4, which means ‘apparently secure.’ This rating has not been reviewed since June nineteenth, 2002. The lack of updated information on the plants range and occurrences have kept it off multiple endangered species lists.
The article referencing a book by Ramirez and Small, published in spring of 2020, evaluate that 50% of white sage has been eradicated due to urbanization.
I am not native, I can’t speak for any native people. All of what I have stated here is a summary or quotation of the words of indigenous activists, ethnobotanists, and conservationists. My hope here is to give a factual overview of the situation and provide direction to people more knowledgeable than myself.

Hierarchy of Smoke Allies
Flowers smell nice, but they don't hold up under the weight of the heavy lifters to come. Burning mullein flowers has been used for clearing space as well as clearing chest congestion.
Leaves are stronger magic than their floral compatriots because they contain more volatile oils and have more energy to give to the working. Mugwort, for example, is a boundary plant, meaning that it can be used as a smoke to cross the boundary around your property to enforce personal limits for unwanted visitors.
Roots and seeds are stronger than the leaves because they form the foundation of the plant and are the basis of the network for the plant's ability to care for itself - the plant's "brain." Gingerroot has the fire necessary to burn away the ties that bind something to our homes that needs removing.
Wood allies are even farther up the food chain. These contain the life of decades' worth of the tree's knowledge because in almost all cases the entire tree must be harvested to procure these beautifully scented woods. Now that we're in the age of responsible stewardship, we are aware of endangered trees like sandalwood (Santalum album) being poached, so Australia has stepped up its game and increased its standards. The largest sandalwood farm from Australia's Santalum spicatum is now three times the size of France. For every tree that is harvested for essential oil, three more are planted.
Resins are the king of all smoke rituals, and the first to come to mind is usually frankincense. If and energy wasn't affected be the lower rungs of the plant kingdom, it stands a good chance that a resin will do the trick.

I need more days like this: spent the afternoon in my aunt’s garden making herb bundles to use for smoke cleansing. And of course, her cats were very helpful.

All Purpose Cleansing and Banishing Oil
This is one of my favourite oils to use to cleanse and banish within the home. It is used to bring in positive energies as well while cleansing. I anoint windows and doors with this oil. I also anoint a white candle with it and walk around my home, placing it on the hearth when I'm done in each room.
Here is the recipe
Frankincense - Purification (Can be substituted with Cedar or Rue)
Lemon - Purification
Mint - Prosperity, protection from curses
Lavender - Peace, happiness
Thyme - Purification, protection, cleansing, healing
Allspice - Protection, abundance, love, luck
Carrier Olive Oil - Fire, protection, cleansing
You can substitute whatever you wish to make it your own. Remember though substitutions can only go so far. I work with a few of these plant allies and that's why it's so powerful for me. Take inspiration and make your own if this does not resonate with you. Sometimes a personally made oil works best.
Blessings!

If your witchcraft requires the use of endangered or threatened species and cultural appropriation, it is not witchcraft. It is trophy hunting and colonialism.
About 15,000 medicinal plant species may be threatened with extinction worldwide from over harvesting.

Smells Like Home
We’re in Wyoming, something that often happens around Lughnasadh I’ve noticed. It’s been much greener this year than it’s been within recent memory, and the smell is phenomenal. I took the opportunity to gather some of the most fragrant plants in the hopes of making Wyoming incense/smoke cleansing bundles!
These include
Sagebrush
Yellow Sweet Clover
Ponderosa Pine
Juniper
All of these are excellent for clearing and purifying the air, and also they just smell dang good. I save trimmings for sachets which can be put in any small space to provide freshness and clarity.
Scent is a wonderful way to evoke memories and reconnect with our past. Wyoming has always been a second home for me, and putting things together like this really helps me feel connected even when I have to go away. Finding local (safe to burn) flora is a great way to both connect to your environment and to practice witchcraft without contributing to the overuse of white sage!
