The Crooked Door by Brad McLelland
"For everything you wish and more Knock twice upon the Crooked Door."
Year Read: 2022
Rating: 2/5
About: When Ginny and her parents move to Nebraska, their car breaks down in a strange town called Pottsville. By day, it's almost too charming and perfect, but by night, Ginny quickly learns that it's crawling with monsters created by something called the Dirge. The Dirge lives behind a crooked trap door in a basement, and it's happy to grant children's wishes for a price. If Ginny wants to save her parents, she's going to have to find a way to defeat the Dirge and the children of Pottsville once and for all. I received a free e-ARC through NetGalley from the publishers at Macmillan/Henry Holt. Trigger warnings: character death, abduction, captivity, injury, weapons.
Thoughts: I had to push myself through most of this book, and had I read a sample of the writing style beforehand, I probably wouldn't have picked it up. It reads like something an actual middle schooler would write at times, in addition to being rather long and drawn out for a middle grade novel. It starts with an extended car ride that could have easily been skipped, and it can't maintain the mystery or horror for as long as it needs to when things do finally get going. I quickly got bored with all the running and chasing and hiding. There's a reason that Goosebumps books are only about a hundred pages long, just saying.
I didn't vibe with the main character at all, and she's another variation of the selfish, entitled brats that populate this book. Yeah, kids can be as selfish as adults if not more, but unlike the children of the corn, there's nothing remotely sinister about these. McLelland also pushes believability quite a bit with Ginny being able to both repair cars and drive them for being, at most, twelve years old. However, I did enjoy the lore in this story. There's some interesting German folklore on the background of the Dirge, and it was probably the only time I felt invested in what was happening. Regardless, I doubt younger readers would be motivated to stick with it.

I’ve made a rousing discovery today. While looking at Jackson Jekyll and Holt Hyde, I realized that their parents are listed separately as Dr. Jekyll being Jackson’s father, and Mr. Hyde behind Holt’s. Now, you might be wondering, ‘basil, that makes total sense, look at their last names,’ but that’s where you’d be wrong. It had me thinking, HOW DOES THAT WORK. HOW IS ONE OF THEM ONE KIDS FATHER AND NOT. THE OTHER. BECAUSE THOSE BOYS SHARE A BODY AND SO DO THEIR DADS SO HOW DID THAT WORK. HOW IS IT THAT JEKYLL IS THE FATHER OF ONE OF THEM BUT NOT THE OTHER, AND VICE VERSA. AND HOW DO THE BOYS CONSIDER ONLY ONE OF THEM TO BE THEIR FATHER. I JUST DO NOT . UNDERSTAND.
Someone please enlighten me to this, as I am genuinely confused and frankly, quite scared as to the implications and missing info of Jackson and Holt’s story.

Just to annoy you, imagine Jackson and Holt manage to go back in time to just before Henry drinks the potion for the first time and because Jackson is so upset about not fitting in he stops Jekyll from drinking the potion.
Idk man.
Poor Holt.
POOR HYDE- NOW HOW IS HE GONNA BE SILLY?!
And then Jackson goes back to his timeline and when he has a stressful day at school because everyone even frankie and deuce are like 'bitchhh? Normie?? Tf are you doing here???' so he goes to his comfort monster, Holt, only to realise he's not there and he'll never see him again and he goes and looks for heath WHO ALSO DOESN'T EXIST ANYMORE. (Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde are Jackson's grandparents and heath's his cousin, same grandparents if I've got it right) When he goes home he asks his mum about it and she's 'what the hell? Who????'

Little cousin AU
When Jackson and Holt begin Monster High, and seeing that Jackson was hell bent on becoming a mad scientist.
Their mother, Cyra gifts them both their father's journal. At first you'd think it was just notes from mad science.
But it was so much more.
Jackson, Holt and Heath spend hours pouring over it. Trying to figure out what was written by Henry and what was written by Edward.
Their were doodles in the margins.
Various mad science experiments. Some that went successful and others that failed.
The boys laughed so hard when they got to the results, how do you accidentally make your shrinking potion turn someone into a chicken?
Edward and Henry passing notes to each other, to Heath's dad, James.
Showing James who chuckles at the memory and regales the boys in an epic story.
Giggling and fake gagging at seeing Henry and Edward talk about their crush on Cyra.
They skip those parts because ew and boring. But in a way it's nice knowing that their dad's really did love their mum.
Abigail, Heath's mother looked over their shoulder once and grinned.
Asking for the book, happy to fill in the gaps of the pranks she and Cyra pulled.
"Nooo, he missed the best part so what happened was"
Because Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde were both remembered in the stories of their friends, their family.
Stories they often wrote down, lest they ever forget them.
And now those stories have found themselves in the hands of their sons.
They aren't their to pass them on in person, but hearing them from the people who loved them.
Makes it feel like they're telling them themselves.

Considering the idea that my MH version of Edward Hyde is a nightmare.
I was thinking about that black sand that Pitch Black has to make his nightmares in the movie "Rise of the Guardians". Also in the description of the book where it says that Hyde does not have an identifiable face. Like in dreams, where you know who the person is but their face is not defined or is not exact. This would also help me explain where the mass goes when high Jekyll becomes low Hyde 🤔 That is, the mass that disappears transforms into sand that is part of Hyde and shadows his features even more. Or maybe it's part of his shadow. A larger and thicker shadow than the normal shadow. (Sorry but I've been in the DCMK fandom long enough for me to have to explain that the Mass doesn't just appear and disappear. If I don't do it, I'll get a nervous twitch. 😫)

Tom Cruise’s latest mission won’t be hitting theaters until 2025.
Paramount Pictures has delayed the next “Mission: Impossible” by an entire year, from its original date of June 28, 2024 to its new spot on May 23, 2025. Like other films of its size and scale, the eighth “Mission” movie was forced to halt production amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike and won’t be completed in time to open next summer.

TGS x MH: The Premise! (Jackson and Holt Centric)
Things to establish!
-My version of MH is used, so some things may be different than canon
-MH and TGS take place in the same universe, just different points at time
-Jackson and Holt’s trigger changed to night and day once again (because otherwise, Holt would not be able to appear at all! Not without modern outlets)
-The AU takes place shortly after Jasper’s recruitment.
Due to a lodger’s shenanigans, Jackson (and Holt) end up in 1885 London, from 2012 New Salem. Said lodger promptly dumps Jackson on Jekyll.
Jekyll, with enough scrutiny on the society, decides to keep this whole ordeal a secret. (The lodger swore to secrecy after some coaxing and bribery)
Jekyll talks one on one with Jackson and learns of their connection. That Jackson is his great grandchild and that he inherited more than just his name. Jackson had a Hyde. Just like him.
He (and Hyde) internally deals with the implications of Jackson and Holt. The fact he has a great grandchild means he’ll marry at some point (did he move on from Lanyon?). The fact HJ-7 became so potent in their blood, it was genetically passed down. What will happen to them?
Pushing that aside, a cover story was established. Jackson (and Holt) are there under the guise of being new lodgers, hiding their relation to Jekyll (and Hyde) With Jackson’s love for Mad science, he fit right in.
The machine that transported Jackson( and Holt) had broken. The only thing way to get the replacement parts is at the Black Fog Bazaar (which said Lodger has been promptly banned from)
Well that’s no problem, Hyde can just get it for them! The machine can be fixed up, Jackson (and Holt) can be sent on their way and everything can go back to normal!
Then Frankenstein and the fire happened.
It complicates things to say the least.
~~~~~~~~
I plan to flesh out this concept further, but I just wanted to get it out there! Please send me asks if you have any questions or fun ideas for this AU! 😊
