Hey radical spicy hot take but Trapdoor is 100% a ruby song. And. Trapdoor is 100% a oscar song. They are a mirror to each other. They are put on the same pedestal. They bear the same weight. They occupy the same space, simultaneously, impossibly. Do you see my vision?
anono... how does it feel to have such a big brain. all songs are rg songs if you try hard enough. 😤
Yes, Trapdoor is first and foremost a Ruby song, but her and Oscar are 100% mirrors living such similar character arcs. I could talk about all those parallels in a post all their own (one day), but for now a really good example is actually comparing Trapdoor to Sky is Falling (thank you @greenteaandtattoos for pointing it out first).
I'm gonna ramble a bit
Trapdoor is a song about the weight Ruby has been carrying. How she has tried so hard and how it's seemingly done more harm than good. It talks about how she doesn't feel seen or heard or needed, let alone wanted. How she's losing herself. How she feels like a trapdoor, part of the floorboards being walked on and unnoticeable. How one more step is all it might take for her to break and fall further into the depths below. And simultaneously like a trap that will lead all her friends to ruin.
And Sky is Falling (in my opinion) is a song about the weight Oscar has been carrying. How he's struggling with moving forward in light of everything he's been through and everything they've lost. The song itself is cited as referencing the original Henny Penny (aka Chicken Little) fairytale since it's a story that uses the song's title as a cry wolf for fearing the end of the world. But that feels a bit like a red herring to me. Or at least not like the whole picture.
Tumblr media
The original myth of Atlas and the weight of the world isn't actually about the god holding the world on his shoulders. It's about him holding up the sky. So whether you read it as Oscar struggling with what to do given Atlas is falling... or struggling with how to move after Ruby falls, (Ruby, who was holding Atlas on her shoulders. So when she fell, so to did the city in the sky) is up to interpretation.
Tumblr media
Some examples of how the songs mirror each other a bit tho:
Trapdoor
Though I try to keep the hope alive
Sky is Falling
Lost all my hopes and dreams
Trapdoor
Watch it all Unfold As I Cascade below Frozen In the darkest moment I can't bear the weight I hold
Sky is Falling
Starin' at the casket, hopin' to move past it Knowin' things will never be the same, and that's it Cold soaked as I'm standin' in rain Feelin' nothin' but pain until I see you again
Both of them struggling to hold onto hope. Both of them struggling with the cold of grief. The water imagery in "cascading" and "rain". The feeling of drowning. How to keep moving in the face of it all.
Also just on the topic of them being mirrors, it's interesting how many of these songs can so easily link back together. Trust Love's "open up your eyes" to Sky is Falling's "cover up your eyes". Then Sky is Falling's direct parallel, Touch the Sky. In my opinion, this song talks about both of them. The first verse is very Oscar "Little Prince" Pine, but especially this part:
I'm soarin' like I never have before Flying self-assured and free And I somehow feel I finally feel like me I looked in the mirror and I gotta say It's been a long, long time since I felt this way Right now, I'm just a bit surprised 'Cause I feel just fine and I might just touch the sky
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then directly towards Ruby's ascension in the second verse:
Open doors and so much hope in front of me Full of confidence, every challenge crushed My heart's electric, racing endlessly Feeling like the stars have all aligned Illuminate the darkness that was blinding me Now I'm positive that it's my time to shineI will explode, you'll see me rise You may not even recognize I just can't wait for this reveal
Tumblr media
But also... very strong argument can be made that both verses apply to both of them. Finally feeling like themselves, the people they've wanted to be, the ones they're meant to be. These kids and their identity issues... But especially cause, um, Ruby isn't the only one that explodes.
Tumblr media
So to summarize, Oscar looked in the mirror - not the mirror that showed Oz's reflection, but the mirror he sees in Ruby - and he became more like himself. Influenced by the hope she inspires.
And Ruby, like Alice, fell through the looking glass. But in the Ever After the only Oscar that was there to stare back at her wasn't a reflection of hope, it was was one of fear.
Tumblr media
So she had no choice but to fall further and looked inward. Until she found the hope that was always inside her. The hope Oscar always knew was there because he sees her.
And the fact that Ruby's hope, her motivation, has always been "the people she hasn't lost yet". And how Oscar is the only living companion Neo 'kills' to hurt her. I'm getting so off track here but...
The Parallels. It's CINEMA.
They make me UNWELL.
Edit: I ended up just talking a bit about how they're mirrors through song and not so much Trapdoor from an Oscar lens. It is so strongly a Ruby song to me that it's hard to apply to him, even if it does fit him in some ways as well. All alone in crowded rooms and all that.

Did you know that Chicken Little was actually known as Henny Penny? The earliest known published version of this European folk tale was in 1823. Don’t worry, the sky isn’t falling...yet.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a world of talking animals, 12-year-old (and 6 acorns tall) Chicken Little's overactive imagination and proneness to panic attacks have made her an outcast at home and in her hometown of Philville. Her father, Randall Rooster, just wants to have a regular kid like everyone else, which most of the time leads to her questioning about being a "freak" due to how often she seemingly witnesses vampires, ghosts, aliens and monsters lurking around. Because of this, Hailey Hen, Chicken Little's mother, has to constantly keep her husband in line so as to avoid Little from wrongly believing that he doesn't love her after all.
At Philville Middle School, things are even harder for Little, as a group of bullies led by Foxy Loxy and also formed by troublemaker Goosey Loosey, nerdy Ducky Lucky and airheaded Henny Penny (who often makes the other three wonder why did they included her in the group to begin with) doesn't stop reminding her of how much of an outcast she is. Principal Owl Powell isn't also of help either, as he also sees her as crazy. But then things take a turn for the worst.
Tumblr media
One day, Chicken Little gets hit on the head by an acorn and thinks it's a piece of the sky, so she runs from one end of Philville to the other yelling with all her might "The sky is falling! The sky is falling!". All of the townspeople freak out at this warning. Soon enough Little has unintentionally incited civil unrest across the town and almost destroys it. After discovering it was just an acorn what started it all, everyone is angry at Chicken Little for raising a false alarm. Thus, almost all of them (including Mayor Turkey Lurkey himself) force her to shape up in order to avoid another incident.
Tumblr media
Pressured by this, Little convinces her parents to sign her up at Camp Yes-U-Can, a summer camp set outside of Philville and meant to improve self-esteem on animal young ones. To her dismay, Foxy and company end up going as well, and the bullying towards her isn't stopped. Despite this, Little is comforted in the camp after meeting other outcast animals from across the land that also have challenges of their own.
Cygrus "Ugly Duckling" Mallard is a down-to-earth bird from the Pondey Ponds town. As an egg, he was put in a basket and left on the pond that surrounded the Mallard residence. Mrs. Mallard found the egg and decided to incubate it along with the eggs she had recently laid. Some years later, Cygrus is being bullied by his duck siblings and by his school peers. He feels different from the rest and can’t wait for the day on which, according to what his mother always tells him, he will become a beautiful swan.
Runt of the Litter is the smallest of twelve pig siblings and now weights 700 pounds. Still, he sees himself as a “wee, helpless little pig” because of his constant comparisons with his other brothers and sisters, who (believe it or not) are way more colossal than him. However, despite his low self-esteem, he is very open to meeting new friends.
Tumblr media
Lane “Black Sheep” Flock is a rebellious yet friendly ewe who isn’t seen well by her upper class parents and relatives. She’s one of those animal young ones who prefer hanging out with friends rather than going to an important family reunion. Because of the pressure her family puts her into, she wishes to know if she should just be herself or get used to their fancy lifestyle.
Fish Out of Water is very silly and playful, but not completely accustumed to the lifestyles from dry land yet. The whole fish family, being the parents very prestigious scientists, have moved from their ocean hometown in order to study the behavior of terrestial animals. At land, Fish has problems socializing with other animal young ones. While, for example, sea animals play ball by letting it float in order for another player to catch it, at land one’s supposed to toss the ball directly. Fish hasn’t still get accustumed to this and other aspects from terrestial culture, and is viewed as a weirdo by the land kids.
Chicken Little gets really well with those animals, who understand her worries as a whole. However, she soon realizes the bullying from Foxy Loxy will be the least of her problems there, as the three sheep who are camp counselors may not be what they seem. She discovers they, led by Counselor Matt, are cooking up a very evil plan for the end of the summer. Thus, she will have to use a lot of courage in order to foil them. But she isn’t alone. Will Little and her new friends obtain the fruits of their personal growth in time to save the day?

NOTE 1: I've priorized the Latin Spanish/Mexican cast here because I'm an actual Latin American myself and also a big fan of Latin Spanish dubbing. All the voice actors listed below are accompanied by one of their characters in parenthesis. I want them to use the voices of those characters when taking their respective roles in Chicken Little Hard-Headed.
NOTE 2: Fish Out of Water and Goosey Loosey will not talk, but rather have a voice actor in the original English track doing their respective animal noises á lá Frank Welker.
Chicken Little - Fernanda Gastélum (June in the 2017 Ducktales reboot)
Randall Rooster - Ricardo Tejedo (Rick Mitchell in The Mitchells vs. the Machines)
Hailey Hen - Berenice Vega (Linda Mitchell in Mitchells)
Foxy Loxy -
Jessica Ángeles (Catra in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power) if the character ends up being female like in 2005′s Chicken Little
Mario Castañeda (Young Gideon Grey in Zootopia) or Oliver Díaz (Tyler in Turning Red) if the character ends up being male
Ducky Lucky - José Antonio Macías (Bert in Sesame Street)
Henny Penny - Erika Langarica (Sonata Dusk in My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Sunset’s Backstage Pass)
Mayor Turkey Lurkey - Gerardo Reyero (Humongous Chicken in The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland)
Cygrus Mallard - Yamil Atala (Dexter in Dexter’s Laboratory)
Runt of the Litter - Miguel Ángel Ruiz (Joey Felt in Atomic Puppet)
Lane Flock - Rossy Aguirre (Buttercup in The Powerpuff Girls)
Counselor Matt - Arturo Mercado (Bob the Builder) when in good mode; José Roberto Pisano (Death in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish) when in evil mode
2nd Counselor - Rubén Cerda (Horton in Horton Hears a Who) when in good mode; Carla Medina (Bellwether in Zootopia) when in evil mode
3rd Counselor - Adriana Núñez (Miss Rabbit in Peppa Pig) when in good mode; Octavio Rojas (Dag in Barnyard) when in evil mode

Fractured Fairy Tales
Tumblr media
Scientists have discovered a way to extract small electrical currents from humid air.  They hadn’t meant to do it.  A student failed to unplug one of their machines at the end of the day.  The next morning, researchers found a spray of microscopic tubes, one-thousandth the diameter of a human hair, produced an electrical signal without power. It’s a small unit, not capable of producing much energy.  Nonetheless, the scientists were surprised, much like the shoemaker who woke up one morning to find Eleves had mended his customer’s shoes.   Miracles in the real world are scarcer than geese that lay golden eggs, but the scientists’ discovery set me to wonder if other forms of energy were possible. What about greed? We have an abundance of that.  Rumpelstiltskin was powered by greed, but he ended badly.  If Vladimir Putin had read that cautionary tale as a child, he might have been less eager to swallow Ukraine. António Guterres, Secretary General of the  United Nations knows about negative energy. Like Henny Penny, he keeps shouting, ” The sky is falling” concerning the war between Isreal and Hamas.  Instead of being thanked for his pains, he’s charged with spreading bad news.   Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman has stepped forward as a peacemaker in the crisis.  Unfortunately, many see him as Foxy-Loxy–a man who makes peace by killing his opponents.  Hateful energy in the U. S. Legislature may do little for the common man but the media thrives on it.  Marjorie Taylor Greene (R) is particularly popular with reporters.  Like the Queen of Hearts in Lewis Carroll’s Allice in Wonderland, she often calls for a colleague’s beheading.  But to be fair and to her credit, Greene insists that the bloodletting be done with decorum. She’d never boo a journalist for asking a question as her colleagues have done. But I could be wrong.  I’m not certain about the etiquette of scoundrels. Booing might be a form of praise.  The Republican leader Don Trump is often abusive to others, even those in his party, yet they continue to follow him like the characters who followed the Simpleton in The Golden Goose. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D) seems to share Greene’s respect for decorum. He told Mike Johnson (R ) the newly elected RepublicanHouse Speaker that if disagreements arose between them, Jerries would not behave disagreeably.   His remark reminds me of another great man who was a master at decorum. During a heated debate in the House of Commons, Winston Churchill refrained from calling his opponent a liar.  He accused the man of technological inexactitude instead.   Jeffries is right to be guided by Churchill.  But for how long and how far? For example, Johnson insists that a woman’s right to control her body is tantamount to the holocaust.  His opponent might consider that view a bridge too far.  Finding a troll in his path,  Jeffries might do better to heed the lesson in Three Billy Goats Gruff and decide to throw his weight around.  I don’t believe in magic, despite the lessons in fairytales, though scientists who pull electricity out of thin air seem to have managed it.  If it did exist, I’d never trust it. Look what happened to Jack Spriggins when he planted a few magic beans.  Being old, I’m less confident than the legions of beauty queens who have hoped for World Peace in their competitions.  Aware that negative energy exists, I hold out less hope for the planet than beauty queens.  Even so, Congress’s Queen of Hearts may have a lesson for us all. The best we can wish for is a little decorum.

"Wolf!" "The sky is falling" "Social Security and Medicare will be insolvent."
“Wolf!” “The sky is falling” “Social Security and Medicare will be insolvent.”
Which of the following is a story with a false narrative: “The Boy Who Cried Wolf!” or “Henny Penny announcing, ‘The sky is falling,”or “The CRFB claiming, “Social Security and Medicare will be insolvent”? Answer: All three are false narratives. The first two are meant to teach children valuable lessons. The third should teach adults a valuable lesson. That lesson is: Don’t believe the Committee…

The Sky Is Falling, RWBY Analysis
The term is a reference to the fairy tale story of Chicken Little or Henny Penny, and is used as an idiom to indicate “a hysterical or mistaken belief that disaster is imminent”. It is played during the chase scene where Jaune, Yang, and Ren are trying to get Oscar back from the Hound.
What does this song mean in the context of the story? Well, we so often forget the Myth of Atlas: the story of a titan who held up the weight of the sky. I believe the sky is falling because Atlas (the floating city, the sky over Mantle) is crumbling and Ironwood, the symbolic Titan, is also faltering. It kinda acts as foreshadowing that Atlas won’t be floating for much longer.
The Hound is the main source of conflict in the scene the song is played. The Hound Grimm or a black dog has continually been tied to the arrival of death in folklore – all around, a bad omen of darker things to come.
Pardon me stretching before I make this reach, but I’d like to think that “When It Falls” is a sorta spiritual prequel to this song – that that was the prophecy of armageddon and this song, “The Sky Is Falling”, is the affirmation that the final days previously mentioned are now approaching. We trusted in authority figures and the cost of trusting is obliteration.

WIP vocabulary game: Regret, and, if that's too specific, Green!
There are four instances of the word “regret” or its derivatives. Here they are in story-chronological order:
“And whose idea was that?” I snap.
He rolls his eyes, “I’m regretting it more every day.” [author note: I don’t often write first person but that’s how this character spoke to me. Thank you, Murderbot /genuine thanks]
I fed well earlier. I don’t feel any particular need to eat anymore, but there is a part of me that regrets the waste. Perhaps that’s from Phil; I don’t recall experiencing this sensation before. [second note: still first person perspective, same character as above but not exactly the same person]
Bren sighs heavily and rubs their face again. “I’m gonna regret this,” they mutter under their breath. “Okay, look, I don’t know what kind of trouble you got yourself into but I’ll let you catch a ride to the line end. That’s tomorrow evening. After that you’re on your own.”
He’s got steel in there somewhere. I gotta admit that. I am probably going to regret not killing him right now. Maybe The Other Guy will do it for me. ‘Cept now he’s guaranteed not to until he can make me feel extra terrible about it.
There are nine occurrences of the word “green” or its derivatives. Here they are in story-chronological order:
Phil is 5’10”, 165 lbs, more or less. In life, they had fair skin, blue-green eyes, and wavy white blonde hair worn at shoulder length. [author note: this comes from a character-description section, written before the character background ballooned into obsession. Included here for completeness]
But the ground isn’t still either. It vibrates like a drumhead. I can’t stand. Green lightning flashes in the clear sky on the far eastern horizon.
Jagged black and green lightning flashes, freezes in place, rending sky and ground both. The roar and rumble are bad but worst of all is the sound beneath and behind it all.
I think of Henny Penny from the nursery tale who believed the sky was falling. Did it look like this? Like paint peeling away from mouldering plaster and lath with a soft green glow seeping from the cracks like fog?
Soft green smoke gathers me in its embrace. The void swallows me. I hear laughter.
The green smudge on my fingers draws my eye. I debate tasting it and decide against it. I’ll save that risk for later. I’m not that desperate. Yet.
Miss Shari is trembling like an aspen and almost as green. Her voice quavers. “Telegram came a few weeks ago but Al said not to implement it until we had confirmation by post--”
“I’m not green. I rode for Overland back spring. Can I just talk to you a spell?” I think it was spring. It felt like spring. Must have been spring if it’s late summer now. I think it’s late summer.
The rictus grin gives way to a face more familiar. Mine. My hair, finer and drier than it was in life. My nose, narrow and sharp. My lips, complete with the little scar on one side, courtesy a fall and not a fight, believe it or not. My eyes, but instead of their familiar blue-green they’re endless, bottomless black.
