whatever else abt the themes of this year's hellfire gala, gerry duggan writing the team with the highest number of people of colour as team members that the xmen have had in the krakoa era being viciously murdered is certainly a Fucking Choice and it is so overt that the prominently white team from last year all got a much longer send-off where they were allowed to have the last word in one way or another while this team was brutally murdered in exactly one panel (two for jubilee), sans juggernaut, the white man. how does this shit get published genuinely.

Also my thoughts on Hellfire Gala, aside from everything people already pointed out, including the ol' and tiresome genocide for mutants all over again, is the fact that only the Avengers were portrayed in the event.

We’ve got other heroes in variant covers, with new outfits, and they were nowhere to be seen (Moon Knight hello? Patsy? Dylan and Venom? Miles? Ghost fucking Rider?).

Even funnier is the fact that no magic users were present either because we all know that TWO sorcerers supreme together would ruin Orchis’ plan. Not to mention Doom himself in the last year, also nowhere to be seen. 

And my last complain is how dumb writers keep sabotaging Magik’s abilities. She can’t teleport with her mutant power? She taught Pixie a teleport spell years ago. She IS the Sorceress supreme of Limbo. That should mean something. Oh, and htf didn’t she resist Xavier’s command when she’s also got defense against telepathy?

Idk. This book is all over the place. I need the X-office to move on and bring different writers.

I love the poetry of allowing Wanda to announce the new X-Men lineup at the Hellfire Gala, seeing as she is now “The Mutant Redeemer” and gifted them to access to the Eldritch Orchard for the resurrections. 🥰

Also how good do she and Lorna look at the Gala!! Sisters!!

I like the lineup. The familiar faces of Jean, Scott and Bobby are nice to continue with. Joining them being Forge, Synch, Magik, Havok and Fire Star. I think this lineup has a lot of potential and I’m eager to see them in action during A.X.E: Judgement Day! 👀

Okay my copy of the book has been delayed to next week, so I don't know if this is the only appearance, but it's the one that hit the web first so let's talk about it:

Hi Gwen! Good to see you!

So, let's answer some questions first:

What is she wearing?

Apparently a Sailor Moon Cosplay converted to formalwear. Sailor Arakko?

Who's the guy?

Well, the Hellfire Gala is supposed to be this big party that all mutants are invited to, but also a bunch of superheroes, celebrities, dignitaries... And this year, like last year, that includes cameos from the writers, illustrators, and editors at Marvel.

That's Jordan D. White, senior editor at Marvel and, appropriately enough, co-creator of Gwenpool.

Which is why she's asking him to get her into a book: as editor, he could push to get her a place in a book he's editing, or push to get Gwen her own book.

Okay, what books does he edit?

Well, the Hellfire Gala for one. Hence his comment: "I told you I could get you in." As a citizen of Krakoa, Gwen had an invite to the Gala. He's talking about getting her into the book.

But aside from that, he oversees all the X-Men comics. All of them. Each book has it's own editors, but he's the guy in charge of keeping the big picture going.

...so yeah, he's a pretty good person to ask for a book.

In fact, I would wager that her asking for a book and him not saying no could be taken as foreshadowing.

The speech bubble placement is weird, though.

This panel is coming at the end of a scene between Emma and Scott, where both are telepathically sharing information they've gathered about the schemes of members of the Quiet Council, the ruling body of Krakoa.

But Gwen and Jordan's conversation is placed directly in between Emma's line and Scott's response. The way the eye is drawn, you read Gwen after Emma and before Scott.

So it reads like:

Emma: It's been an uphill battle for the good guys since Jean left the Council.

Gwen: I wish I was involved in helping the good guys.

Scott: Bye Emma.

So it kinda looks like Gwen is providing an answer to Emma's problem, which admittedly sounds kinda nuts and is probably my Gwen-stanning drawing connections where there are none.

But regardless, I do choose to interpret the conversation between Gwen and Jordan White to mean he is trying to get her a place in an X-book. So even if this is her only panel, I am very happy.

Excuse me for a moment while I screech about this:

Avalanche lost the vote, as we all knew he would, sadly.

Dude’s got a point, though.  Magneto, Mystique and Destiny are sitting on the Council, along with other, MUCH worse mutants, and people think Avalanche can’t make a change for the better?  C’mon.

This also seems to show that even bad guys have standards, because Gorgon, prior to his Otherworld death, was an absolute monster.

I am so, SO happy to see Avalanche and Pyro together and interacting, even if it’s only for two panels.  Pyro commiserating with Avalanche after the vote was exactly what I’d hoped for, it could only be more perfect if Blob was there, too.

This also indicates that Pyro and Avalanche are not estranged, which I suspected during Marauders due to his complete lack of interaction with anyone from the Brotherhood.  No, it was just Duggan not bothering to write anything about Pyro’s history or past connections.  They seem to be on perfectly friendly terms here.

Also, Avalanche and Pyro’s Gala looks this year seem to be “dress pants and jacket over the uniform,” and I respect that.  Maybe they are matching on purpose.  Or maybe they just didn’t have access to Jumbo Carnation this year and had to hastily throw outfits together.

Okay I remain on the record as thinking that all the Moira stuff is the weakest part of the current era and stupid as fuck, but even I have to concede it got an ‘LOL, Lads’ from me when the Five foiled Evil Robot Moira’s plans for Proteus at the Hellfire Gala with like, the power of love.

They were really like “omg, Proteus needs us, quick, Found Family Powers, Activate!”
