Summary: (This one-shot is part of my Down the Hall series, but it can be read as a standalone.)

Vanessa and her dad reminisce about the little step stool in the bathroom.

For as long as Vanessa could remember, her father, Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz, had always been evil. She was used to hearing him build, monologue, and explode from a few rooms down the hall.

Thinking back on it, that isn’t the only thing she remembers from her dad’s weekends.

Vanessa remembers that little pink step stool in the guest bathroom of her dad’s apartment. She remembers that she had just grown tall enough to reach the sink, to her joy, when he repainted it and placed it back in the bathroom.

Vanessa had taken it as a patronizing act, an attempt to stifle her growth and style. As she grew older, she decided to “forget” about it, and consider it another instance of her father not truly seeing her.

Sixteen-year-old Vanessa is helping her dad organize the apartment. Ever since he lost Doreen in his hoarder’s pile, she’s been helping him keep things clean.

Reaching up into the cabinet by her dad’s security monitors, she pulls down a box of videotapes, only for one to fall out and hit her head.

“Ow!” She angrily slams the box down on the counter and rubs her aching head.

“Vanessa!” Heinz rushes over and puts his tray of drinks down before reaching out to examine his daughter’s head. “Are you alright sweetie-kins?”

Vanessa gently waves off her father’s overprotective arms. “Yeah, I’m okay.” Glaring at the offending videotape, she reaches out for her dad’s rolling desk chair before taking a seat. “What are these anyway?”

Heinz stops doting on his daughter long enough to grab a rolling chair of his own. “They’re security tapes of the apartment, you know,” he speaks in a teasing tone for the last bit of his sentence. “Before all those hip video storing apps, we had to use these.”

She rolls her eyes and takes a coffee from the drink tray. “I know what a videotape is Dad, I was asking what was on them. If they were empty videos of the apartment, you wouldn’t have kept them.”

Sipping from her cup, she realizes that isn’t entirely true. Maybe her dad does keep blank videotapes of the apartment. He is a hoarder after all.

Rather than answering his daughter, Heinz gives a knowing smile before he takes the videotape from the floor, the one that hit her head, and puts it into the player on the desk.

On the biggest screen of his security monitors, a video begins to play. It depicts Heinz laying down a tarp in the living room next to buckets of paint and a toolbox. The little stepping stool from Vanessa’s childhood is next to him on the floor.

In real-time, Vanessa sits up in her rolling chair. “I remember that stool.”

What she’d meant, was that she remembered when he repainted the stool. For years, she and her father had played a sort of tag with that stool. She would remove it from the bathroom, only for him to put it right back. She had only recently convinced him to take it out.

They both sip at their coffee as the video continues. Video Heinz proceeds to tighten the screws on the little step stool before painting the sides with Ultra Pink, and the steps with Fuchsia. He barely begins to detail the stool with other colors when a video likeness of Perry enters the room. Video Heinz and video Perry team up and continue to detail the little stool with flowers and Vanessa’s name. By now they have paint all over themselves.

Vanessa and Heinz in real-time don’t watch the entire thing because that would be like watching paint dry. Instead, they eat snacks and talk to each other as the video goes on without sound.

“How come you kept that thing for so long?” Vanessa pops a grape into her mouth and finishes it before speaking again. “I eventually grew tall enough.”

Heinz avoids his daughter’s gaze for a few moments and scratches at the back of his neck. “It isn’t…” Vanessa waits patiently for him to continue. He sighs. “I didn’t keep it because you still needed it. I kept it for the memory.”

“Okay?” She motions for him to elaborate.

“It’s just that, you’re only here for half the time, Vanessa. I keep the place full of wires and self-destruct buttons, the place feels so much…homier… when your things are still around.” He finally looks her in the eyes, and Vanessa can see that his eyes are full of tears. “Out of all the things I hoard, your things are my favorites.”

“Aww, Dad!” Vanessa jumps out of her chair to hug her father.

The rest of the day is spent watching their “home movies” on the security screen. Perry and Norm eventually join them.

If the stepstool somehow reappears in the bathroom tonight, Vanessa will claim she had nothing to do with it.
