carol/yon-rogg… thoughts? (i’m so sorry in advance)
The way I was literally just vagueposting about them on Discord 😭 the TIMING
I've read nearly every Captain Marvel fic on Ao3, Yonvers included, and I have a lot of thoughts
Gonna start this out by saying I hope this ship never becomes canon endgame
Complicated exes
Carol would not go back to him.
She would definitely have regrets and grief, but she would not go back to him. It would he impossible for her to feel safe around him.
She could maybe be a coworker or ally if she's feeling exceptionally generous and the universe would collapse otherwise, but a proper relationship is out of the window.
Yon-Rogg projected onto her a lot. She was an amnesiac clean slate. In the deleted scene, the person he most admired was himself - what if he started admiring himself after he rescued Carol? Viewing himself as a saviour too her?
Yon-Rogg would never see the Supreme Intelligence as Carol. He's a Kree supremacist, and he knows that Carol is human. He can't ever treat her as a full equal.
The Supreme Intelligence would demote him, but I doubt it would give Yon-Rogg any consequences that actually measured up too his actions.
They definitely hate each other after.
They would both beat the shit out of each other if given the chance.
They've definitely been in a relationship and they've definitely slept together.
Carol wouldn't tell Maria everything about Yon-Rogg at first because of the guilt of having a relationship but eventually would spill the beans during the blip. It would be very hard for her to do.
Yon-Rogg would 100% be jealous over Prince Yan. Meanwhile Prince Yan would obviously care, but he'd he incredibly cold and dismissive towards him. He knows him only as the guy that destroyed Carol's life. He's not deserving of his time.
Valkyrie definitely knows about him. Again, like Yan, she doesn't think he's deserving of her time. But she wouldn't hesitate at stabbing him if he came to it.
The Kree have a kinda poly culture so what I'm saying is that Carol was sleeping with Yon-Rogg and Dar-Benn at the same time and they hated each other a lot
Carol's relationship with Dar-Benn is awful but a lot healthier in the sense that Dar-Benn had zero idea about Carol's origins.
I can definitely see Dar-Benn learning about Carol's origins after she becomes Supremor and being shocked, but deciding not to do anything to punish Yon-Rogg. Again, Kree supremacy. Any good will she has for Carol goes out the window the moment she realises she's human.
The shared blood thing... poor Carol.
I NEED people to talk about the fact that Carol literally DIED and Yon-Rogg resurrected her like??? This is how you know the MCU has gone to shit because any good writer would milk the fuck outta this
Carol's fine with blood UNTIL it is blue. Blue blood makes her incredibly squeamish.
She has a Thing against blood needles and transfusions that she refuses to explain.
Yon-Rogg would never call her Carol. Mostly Vers, maybe Captain or Danvers, but never Carol. It would mean that he accepts her as a separate person.
Very bitter over her leaving - "why isn't she grateful for all I did for her?"
Yeah the Supreme Intelligence treated him wrong... but that does not mean Carol should forgive him in anyway
I know some Yonvers fans will kill me but it's an emotionally/psychologically abusive relationship.
She literally does not have access too basic medical information about her species???
Are we gonna talk about the fact that all of this time hes wittering about fair fights Carol physically can't beat him in a fair fight because Kree are stronger than humans? And that she isn't allowed to know that she's human? So she's being gaslit into thinking her failures are her fault when they're not?
I honestly also think its important that not everything should be romantic. They aren't romantic in canon and he still abused her. It's not always a partner or family member that can abuse you - it can be anyone.
I would write more but it's 1am so im wrapping it up. Anyways, final thoughts: a very interesting and deeply unhealthy dynamic that adds a lot to Carol's character but as an endgame ship would detract from her character arc. Anyways im tired af gn squad

I adore how you head Canon carol as someone being hot. I head Canon her as being freezing cold to the touch because of her powers working all the time to draw energy in even if she's not using it
I personally headcanon that Carol unconciously emits heat as part of her powers, but her being cold because of her powers is a really cool idea (badum tsch)
Cold Carol Danvers headcanons:
Yon-Rogg would tell her that she was 'weak' whenever she absorbed someone's body heat by accident. It was a lot easier to manage with the inhibitor chip in, but still a struggle.
Skrulls canonically like the cold... Talos and Soren having no problems touching her and them being the one of the few people Carol didn't have to worry about touching.
Kamala and Monica try and avoid touching Carol because she automatically absorbs heat energy without thinking about it and can make them really cold.
Touch starved Carol </3
Touch starved Carol but Monica and Kamala insist on hugging Carol at least once everytime they meet if she makes the conscious effort not to absorb their body heat.
Alternatively, Kamala coating herself in a layer of crystal and then squashing Carol in a hug.
Goose and the flerkittens don't care for the laws of physics and like snuggling up to her.
Carol can feel herself be cold, but it's distant. She feels the energy inside of her before she feels the cold.
She has to make an effort to let herself be warm. It's not hard - it's kind of like how you make an effort to avoid putting pressure on something that hurts. But she does sometimes forget.
The temperature in her ship is always cranked up to a maximum.
Binary form is a sort of balance - she is both drawing in energy and firing it out at the same time. So whilst she does absorb people's body heat, she makes up for it by blasting them with energy.
Carol accidentally absorbing Yan's body heat during their wedding because she's so nervous/embarresed she doesn't realise she's doing it.
Because she feels the energy before she feels her actual temperature, she doesn't always register that she is cold.
Monica, who can see energy, can see when she's cold. She will just ominously walk up to Carol and hand her something warm and she'll be like "ohhhhhh I'm cold that's what's bothering me".
On the other hand Monica can and will use her to make ice cubes.
The moment Kamala finds out Carol is cold she starts making grabby hands and demands she allows herself a hug. And then also uses her to make ice cubes.

( A WORN-IN LEATHER JACKET, THE ROARING OF A COCKPIT, THE REFLECTION OF STARS IN YOUR EYES )▸ welcome to latverion, CAROL DANVERS (CAPTAIN MARVEL). it’s time to be gracious, for in this vast multiverse, you have been saved by emperor doom. according to records you are 57 (physically appears 30s) and use SHE/HER pronouns. emperor doom expects you’ll enjoy your career as BATTLE CHAMPION, or else. excellent. we look forward to your contribution. ( CLAIRE, GMT, 24, SHE/HER, BRIE LARSON )
ABOUT BASICS
FULL NAME: carol susan jane danvers / car-ell
ALIAS: captain marvel
AGE: 57 (april 24, 1965) (physically appears early 30s)
AFFILIATIONS: avengers, (alpha flight, carol corps)
GENDER AND PRONOUNS: cis female, she/her
FACE CLAIM: brie larson
IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS
POINT OF ORIGIN:
carol’s based on a sort of hybrid mcu/616 canon! the logistics are still a little rough around the edges so bear with me, but i’m taking some of her mcu backstory and role within the team, mixing it with her comics origins (she’s half-kree, got her powers differently, etc etc) and using more 616 to flesh her out
ABILITIES/SKILLS:
superhuman strength, stamina, agility, durability, & reflexes; flight; regenerative manipulation; decelerated aging; energy manipulation; master pilot & combatant
HAVE THEY BROUGHT ANY FAMILY OR PETS WITH THEM:
yes! chewie, my beloved -- she’s a cranky wonderful tabby cat who is ACTUALLY a flerken (cat-shaped extremely powerful alien don’t worry about it)
ANY HEADCANONS YOU WANT OTHERS TO KNOW:
(tw death, alcoholism, war)
she was born in boston in the late 60s to joe & marie danvers, a perfectly ordinary and in no way alien couple, no sir!
(turns out marie was, in fact, mari-ell, making carol half-kree, but she didn’t learn that for a pretty long time)
joe was… not the best dad & definitely favored carol’s half-brothers, stevie & joe, jr.
carol and stevie were really close growing up, and when he joined the military, she wanted to follow in his footsteps!
what she really wanted was to study literally rocket science in college and become an astronaut, but the family didn’t have enough money to pay for her to study; rather than being forced into a menial job, carol joined the air force. she earned her college degree through the us air force academy–she was one of the earlier classes of women to graduate, and a goddamn phenomenal pilot
not too long later, stevie was killed in military action, which made carol even more determined to honor his legacy, and she quickly rose to the top of her class
however, carol wasn’t allowed to fly in combat or become an astronaut due to Sexism TM! she was instead offered the opportunity to work as a special operative, and came onboard Project PEGASUS, a joint project between the air force, SHIELD, and NASA – headed by dr. wendy lawson, who quickly became a close mentor
lawson, was, of course, also a kree soldier named mar-vell, who, in carol’s presence, was attacked by her superior, yon-rogg
in the process, carol was knocked into a psyche-magitron machine, forever altering her genetic structure, rendering her amnesiac and unlocking her latent kree powers (she believed for a long time that she had somehow fused with mar-vell’s dna, but, nah, comics logic)
yon-rogg kidnapped carol, and for the next six years, she was trained as a kree soldier named vers, until she crash-landed on earth during a mission and managed to regain her memory
in the process, she allied with nick fury and basically became the on-call space girl/extraterrestrial superhero–first for shield, then for the avengers
at some point in there she was just entirely absorbed by rogue?? (tbd dependent on if/when we get a rogue), but that was a bad time for her, and she still has trauma from such a violating loss of identity
carol is a massive star wars nerd & has a pet cat (flerken) named chewie (chewbacca), who is a very good girl and we love her very much
in this house carol danvers is a lesbian !!
the combo of lightspeed travel & her kree abilities has dramatically slowed her aging–though she is well into her late 50s, she looks solidly 30 at most
this is a long rambling mess i’m sorry if you’ve made it this far i love you
QUESTIONNAIRE
HOW DOES YOUR CHARACTER FEEL ABOUT EMPEROR DOOM?
Oh, fuck that guy. She doesn’t do well with authority (shut up, Tony), and she extremely doesn’t do well with overbearing megalomaniacal would-be emperors trying to build the entire world in their image. It’s not a great look. Carol has spent her life trying to reclaim power and autonomy from people who would try to take it away from her, just as she’s tried to do right by the little guy and keep people safe. The guy’s going down, and she’s not afraid to make some noise about it.
HOW DOES YOUR CHARACTER FEEL ABOUT THE BATTLES? ARE THEY TRYING TO AVOID THEM? OR ARE THEY EAGER TO JUMP IN?
This is a woman who canonically regularly beats up the Hulk just to feel a little better. Carol’s a battle champion, and she’s good at it. She hates being used for these ends; it’s dehumanizing and humiliating, and she’s spent too much of her life as someone else’s soldier. She’s strong as shit, but she’d rather be using that for herself, to make her own choices, to be her own person. No one should be used as a punching bag for someone else’s pleasure, someone else’s agenda, without consent or autonomy. She knows what that’s like. It’s awful. Still, there’s a thrill in the fight. It makes her feel alive. It makes her almost feel sane. Almost.
WHY HAS YOUR CHARACTER ACCEPTED THEIR JOB POSITION? WILL THEY USE IT TO GET CLOSER TO DOOM? OR WILL THEY USE IT EXPLOIT HIM? OR DO THEY SIMPLY LIKE THEIR JOB?
See above! She loves her job, but she hates her job, if that makes sense? Getting to just punch people is a terrific fit for her, and a great way to take out some of that pent-up energy and anger. But she hates why she’s doing it, and she hates that she has to do it. At least it’ll give her a ground-level view to see what’s going on--she’s never been very good on the ground, so it’s a change of pace. If she can get towards Doom’s good side, she can exploit him, and maybe fix this mess. Maybe. That implies getting on his good side, though, which, knowing her, isn’t about happen. She’s a damn good soldier, but a terrible spy.

@americashielded (you brought up good points that spurred many thoughts so I thought I would tag you in my more thought out response)
This was all too much to put in tags so forgive me XD I cannot speak for various other characters who have unfortunately bore the burden of being exposed to the vacuum of space, but Carol in particular has a few things that protect her and I think take the edge off of the cold, lifeless void of the stars.
First and foremost, she has her Starforce suit/uniform. It’s shown to be quite resilient and advanced enough to allow for effortless travel underwater, though we do not see if the suit itself can allow for propulsion in space. As afterwards, if she is flying in space on her own accord, it’s with her powers. The suit can even summon a barrier that keeps Carol from drowning. Depending on how it is designed, one can presume performs it has the same sort of functions in space, only it shields her from radiation, sun exposure, sheer cold, sheer heat… having the oxygen sucked out of her lungs…Though maybe in water or planet-side, that barrier may also function as a filter to ensure she has air.
Not sure what it would do on a planet lacking oxygen… rip.
That’s not an option in space, so that would be a real concern for her if she didn’t have her powers to back her up. She could maybe have a sort of oxygenator built into the suit, but realistically (which is hilarious considering what this suit can apparently already do) that sort of equipment would be bulkier than her outfit allows.
Temperature wise, I think without her powers she is keenly aware of dramatic variables. The suit might protect her from the worst of it, but I imagine it’s perhaps like the combat suits in Mass Effect series. It shields you against the environment for the most part but long enough exposure becomes a real concern as the suit can no longer properly stave off the effects of -50 degrees Celsius and poor Carol is about to suffer the effects of hypothermia.
In Mass Effect it also did not stop anyone from being cold, it just made it so they don’t immediately die from it (or extreme heat, etc.).
As we’ve seen with Loki, Thor, Yondu, Quill, Gamora, and Ebony Maw, people’s reactions to space differ greatly depending on their species and cybernetic upgrades. Ebony Maw died the quickest, meaning he has the same sort of base resilience to space as humanity does—which is, uh, none. Gamora had cybernetics that helped her but we could see the effect happening to her, most notably ice forming. Quill, we saw more human reaction; his eyes became bloodshot, he paled, I think his lips darkened (but that could have been lighting effects), which is indicative of exposure to cold, and he probably nearly died.
Yondu actually did quite well from what I remember, but I’ve only seen GoTG2 once…? So I’ll have to rewatch it. I also won’t claim to know his species either, however, he probably has some cybernetic upgrades which we know from Gamora can help against space, and he’s obviously not human nor whatever Maw is.
Thor did amazing, but interestingly there were implications that a star’s energy was more dangerous to him than space. I imagine eventually he would have perished, but who knows when.
Loki is the reigning champion of falling through space without dying or becoming severely injured by it.
Carol is in that awkward middle ground. She was human until Yon-Rogg gave her the blood transfusion of the century and turned her into a Kree-Hybrid. I personally headcanon the entire process was much more than just a transfusion. But, that still leaves the question of how resilient are Kree to space? And do her powers play a role in her resilience even passively?
We get to see Carol face off (albeit briefly) against space towards the end of the Captain Marvel movie. She drops out of the science vessel, clinging to Yon-Rogg’s fighter. She doesn’t have her powers active at that moment, and you see the suit after a few seconds activate that barrier and protect her from exposure.
And then, presumably protect from re-entry. Which is… hot. In the worst ways imaginable. So just on that basis alone, her suit has to protect her reasonably well from numerous extreme elements.
Her binary form I believe offers a sort of invulnerability that makes it so she doesn’t feel the elements, or the hazards of space at all (especially considering she can move fast enough to make jumps in space). Also somehow provides her with oxygen. Very convenient. I haven’t quite decided how long she can use her powers before that sort of becomes a concern, but I don’t care for the idea that it would be endless. Cosmic energy doesn’t create air.
Generally, I work on that invulnerability making her immune to environments that would otherwise give people problems. If she’s not actively engaging her binary form, I write that differing temperatures and environments do get to her. If she’s on a planet that’s very hot for example, and she comes back to Earth (notably in the northern hemisphere), she feels chilly and will dress to keep herself warmer. Her suit makes her able to withstand hazards for longer, but it’s not perfect. If she were dressed as a civilian, for planet-side hazards, I would say she’s on Steve’s level of withstanding things unless it’s energy/electrical based. She would handle that better simply because part of her abilities revolve around energy absorption and natural deflection.
In space… I mean she’d die eventually. She doesn’t have any cybernetics, so I would say she’d last a little longer than Quill due to the Kree manipulation. Until a movie definitively shows her resilience to space or planet-side dangers, they can and do affect her.

thinking about how Vers didn't go to Kree Military Academy (or whatever it's called) since she was a child like regular Kree but still got a spot on THEE most elite covert operations team (that functioned as a unit for 9 years with each member hand-picked by Yon for being best in their field which means they didn't technically need a new member and there were no spots available) ...being the Commander's 'Personal Number One Member of Starforce'™ sure does count for something, doesn't it? ;)
...and since Yon doesn't do anything by halves he probably taught her everything she needed to be good enough for the most elite team himself....
where's our scenes of Yon teaching Vers how to fly Kree ships and Vers gets frustrated how long he keeps her on a simulator without letting her fly the real thing so she sneaks into Helion because she's like 'i can totally fly this thing' and then crashes it on the first try 🤣 and she thinks Yon is going to yell at her that she wasn't supposed to but instead he runs to the wreckage, ashen and shaken with worry, gently checks her for injuries or a sign of concussion...and only when he makes sure she's okay he gives her a stern talking to and grounds her (literally, no flying) for a while longer. .. and then signs and offers to take her on a supervised short flight because she pouted and she yelps in delight and gives him a surprise hug that almost knocks him off his feet ... (she's good at that...knocking the ground from under him in more ways than one)

Dating Yon-Rogg Headcanon
Tumblr media
Yon-Rogg x Reader Headcanon
CAPTIAN MARVEL WAS THE ABSOLUTE BEST!
🥚 Yon-Rogg is extremely remote when exposing his feelings towards you. He wants you for himself.
🥚 He is meek to irritate. When someone is talking to you. Failing a mission that the both of your trained for long exhausting months.
🥚 Yon-Rogg always wants the best for you, which means he would kill to get anything and everything you need. Literally.
🥚 Yon is serious about his job and his relationship with you. He’s not much of a jester on the job, but when it’s you two, he’ll laugh all night if he could.
🥚 Yon loves to see you frustrated by insignificant things. He’d follow your harden expression to what was hindering you, then back to you. It was an immense turn for him. So he would make matters worse to see you like this a little longer.
🥚 With a busy schedule, you guys are always with the team. The time that you have left to spend it together is after a tedious, exhausting mission. He tries to, but as soon as you both enter his room you both collapse on each other from fatigue.
🥚 Yon is a devious, charming man. He teases you hard, especially when the whole team is out for dinner. He would always sit next to you, rub your arm, then graze your upper thigh with the palm of his hand, and he would whisper in your ear when the table is at a whole uproar, leaving you blushing.
🥚 Yon cuddles strong. He enfolds you from behind when in bed, then nuzzles his face in the crook of your neck. Some nights when he is disconcerted, he would lay on his side away from you. He would simmer in his thoughts. Simmering what he could have done better, until he overflows.
🥚 Sometimes his looks can unravel you. He knows this and tortures you with it.
🥚 Yon doesn't handle rough missions well. He would storm to his bedroom, throw anything in his sight, and yell in rage. You would interrupt with a faint knock then the door would open to your frame. His eyes filled with lust and he charged towards you and pulled you in into his bedroom. Do I have to explain what happened next?

MCU: Captain Marvel - Yon-Rogg Meta/Headcanon
Watched Captain Marvel a second time, this time focusing on character interactions, with the benefit of hindsight/knowing Carol’s actual circumstances.
WARNING: SPOILER ALERT BELOW THIS LINE
I thought I had imagined it, but apparently not. I’m pretty sure Yon-Rogg—for all that the Kree are said to emphasize Mind and Rationallity waaay over emotions and empathy—was 1) somewhat influenced by Carol’s empathy after six years knowing her (reluctance to engage civilians compared to the rest of Starforce, his genuine enjoyment of her company and humor) and 2) was emotionally compromised by “losing” Vers to the Skrulls (lied to Accuser Ronan about the Skrulls being “lost” even as he warns/orders Korath to continue toward C-53 where he KNOWS the Skrulls are, AFTER stopping Korath from reporting the ACTUAL situation—aka Vers being compromised by a Skrull Mind Reading Device, which you’d think would take immediate precedence—to Ronan).
After all, it’s only after the scene in the shack with the Skrull impersonating Vers (where we see his cool rationality almost visibly snap) that he goes for a “burn it all, and salt the earth” approach, kills the impersonator in a fit of rage, and calls Ronan to report the Skrull “infiltration” of C-53 and bomb it like he’s got no other options because ALL aka Vers-is-lost-must-destroy. Those are…definitely not the actions of someone coolly accepting the betrayal of a liability—“just” a living weapon? Ha!—and moving forward to finish the job. I mean, another Kree might have done the exact same and killed the Skrull and called Ronan, but not with that sense of almost desperate anger. Looking at his face, he looks like he’s having a barely-controlled meltdown. Seriously, I was paying careful attention to his face, eyes, breathing, and body-language in this scene. I’d venture to say he becomes almost visibly unhinged.
At this point, I’m pretty sure he hates (oh look, emotions) Mar-Vell, the Skrulls, and the “shit-hole” of planet that seems determined to yank Vers away from the new life he’s built for her. I’m not sure if the irony of the situation and his struggle with his emotions (despite scolding Carol for the same thing the whole time she lived with the Kree) was lost on him or not, but it definitely wasn’t lost on me.
The fight scene on Mar-Vell’s ship? He’s looks pissed (which is expected) but also nothing like the cool, relatively in-control team leader we saw on Torfa. He’s very aggressive, visibly angry, in a way he hadn’t been the entire movie. Despite that, there are several moments he almost looks like he’s trying to plot a way to bring Carol—Vers—back into the fold, and not just as a prisoner to Hala. In other words, this man is desperate to hold onto the reality he’d been building for the past six years, no matter how much of it was built on a lie (actually, aside from Korath and Minn-Erva, Starforce wasn’t initially going for lethal kill shots in that fight scene, I think—taking a cue from him, no doubt). Plus, there’s Korath’s throw-away line of the Supremor “fixing” her (I forgot the exact words he used) that imply a lot of scary things about the Supreme Intelligence’s ability to manipulate the mind/memory. (But we’ll save that for another post, someday.)
And then, of course, there’s that final fight between them in the desert. I love the point it made about Carol’s true strength, but focusing on Yon’s demeanor—and not just his words, which I don’t think he actually believes will emotionally sway/successfully manipulate her, so much as he uses it as a tool to indicate he wants a non-powered fight—I’m pretty sure he wasn’t even looking for a way to legitimately “beat” her without her powers, but instead a way to die with at least a little bit of a “worthy” fight. Which makes sense since the Kree are definitely a warrior culture.
And you know what else? The first time around, his plea of arriving empty-handed on Hala came out really pathetic sounding to me, like he was pleading with her to come with him after all the deception—like she owed him anything, after all that? Puh-leese. But the second time in? Looking at Jude Law’s face? I’m pretty sure Yon-Rogg was protesting living to tell the tale—being spared—instead of actually arriving alive and empty-handed on Hala (though I’m pretty sure that didn’t go well either).
I really don’t think his concern and regard and, arguably, his admiration and fear (because I do believe there is some of that there) was at all faked. Not after six years of knowing her as a teammate. Aside from that desperate, very see-through attempt at manipulation at the end (and honestly I really can’t believe that was a legitimate attempt at manipulation, it was THAT transparent and incongruous to both their established characters and just...too over-the-top instead of snarky and sarcastic and never-outright-admit-she’s-got-a-point the way they were when they were genuinely interacting, before) and the ongoing lie about her background, he really does believe that she’s stronger than she (before, on Hala) and others (I think he was talking to Att-Lass at the time) thought. He says that twice about her, “You/She...is stronger than you think,” —implied, of course, is the “if you can control your emotions the way I, the way the Kree, do.”
And she proves him right...and wrong, in her own unique way. Her main strength lies not in her Kree blood, her powers, Kree ideas, or his Kree physical training, but in her acceptance of her humanity (the ability to fall and get up again, over and over) and her empathy (for the Skrulls, for all the victims of the Kree Empire). Which is, I’m sure, a bitter bittersweet twist of irony for him in that the realization of his statement, her strength, leaves no room for him or the Kree in her loyalties.

No one can convince me that Yon-Rogg didn’t carry Carol bridal style to his ship when he decided to take her to Hala from Earth.

So according to a deleted scene, the person Yon-Rogg sees when he visits the Supreme Intelligence, aka the most important person to him, is himself.
I really wanna know who Korath and Ronan see tbh.. Ronan probably sees his father, who I assume was the Supreme Accuser before he was, but Korath~ I honestly would have Ronan as my first guess?? In the comics they’re best friends and in the MCU Korath sticks with Ronan after he goes rogue so I’d definitely put my money on that tbh~

Carol Danvers First Thoughts
I really liked her a lot and have some opinions.
Okay, Some Stuff I Really Like:
I really liked her ability to have confidence even while scared. It is very powerful when we see people who are scared but do what they need to anyway.
I love the “get back up” imagery it is a really powerful motif and it's a pretty strong character trait that was consistent no matter what. Giving some consistency in a movie that could feel a bit disjointed.
Her ignoring rules is another way they connected her character across a very volatile character in other wars. I also enjoyed that even when others tried to force her into boxes but she would not do it was really important.
The costume being non-sexualized was amazing, but the outfits can still be in character and theme without being a cat suite built for males to think are hot.
That helping support a woman of colour being why she is considered brave and hero to her family.
That we weren’t shown graphic or sexualized violence when showing her past traumas. Even the memory extraction scene didn’t including graphic beating, gaging, ripped clothes, excessive blood or injuries that ring reminiscent of abuse. I was also grateful that neither acts of or threats of sexual violence were included. They didn't even have sexually suggestive insults/manipulation. They are still giving her a story, and knowledge she can bee hurt and setting up some well paid off emotional reactions without this horrific violence. They did still have cartoon superhero fights and explosions keeping the genre traits we all wanted to see.
I like the way she is swayed by the stories of refugees and empire. She has always been a bit of a rogue soldier and this lingering distrust of the Kree allows her to change her mind. She becomes an anti-colonialist and protects refugees, which is the best kind of hero to be. Though it is a little funny that they make the US army look chill as they are imperialists themselves. (Also since we genocided the Asgardian refuges I can't assume the Russos won't murder them all)
Part of her hero arc being throwing off not only the indoctrination of the Kree but also the very apparent gaslighting and control of Yon-Rog and the  Supreme Intelligence. She explicitly rejects both of their control, telling them she is not weak for feeling and owes them nothing. Their undermining of her identity, feelings and what she wants to do is shown as an enemy. And I like that it obviously has shaped her but she can’t still bunch those abusive people in the face!
Where They Could Do Better:
Some things to add could be expanding what we know of her birth family. They are down to yell at and deride her multiple times. we also see her father (or another male relative) physically handling her roughly and shoving her to the ground at a beach. We also are told that her real family are the Rambeau’s. While it does show the theme stretches back to childhood, but some more information I think would be good. It does show she has always been stubborn but some more ways it changed her would be nice.
Other topics that could be dropped in would be some likes and dislikes. Maybe some of what she uncovers could be emotions/reaction to some cultural touchstones. Like maybe references to 80s/90s American cause some thoughts. We get a lot of this characterizations in Marvel movies and it could go a long way.
Also some more direct conversation with her old Kree teammates and Maria Rambeau not tied to just her memory blackouts. The best conversations we got were with Monica we see some other sides to her than warrior/soldier and snark. Her stuff with Fury was fun for sure but some conversations other than banter could help so we could build up a relationship that would connect to why she would give him her communicator and have an emotional tie that would bring her to immediately show up when called and have the long term emotional tie I likely think they are going within Endgame. It also could have added characterization to Fury outside facts, easter eggs and setting up later fils.
However, I love her so much and found the movies overall fun to watch and even had me almost tearing up. I also got a pretty strong immediate headcanons.  (also projection probs)
Nd Headcanon
 C-PTSD w/ Dissociative symptoms:
Affect & Emotional Dysregulation: Often either showing almost no emotion on her face and internalizing her feelings or very visible and explosive expression of emotions.
Disrupted Systems of Meaning: Similar to the identity issues we see multiple ways she creates specific scaffolds she works on as her identity. Being a pilot for the army, the Kree way of life "heroes", and then the idea of the protector of the Skrulls/refuges. And in conjunction, there is a loss of belief around these too.
Dissociation: She is shown to check out and go blank. One I remember is in the Project Pegasus bunker when reading through the papers she misses fury trying to talk to her. Another example I remember is the way her sensory perceptions distort when shown pictures of her past.
Dissociated/Repressed Memories: So this is much more of a theory/headcanon then something that’s not explained by sci-fy stuff.  But the way they describe her memory blanks is super relatable for my dissociation and memory loss. She has some huge blanks which can happen a lot, even whole people she loved. The way these gaps cause feelings of loss and confusion which is so common with people who have dissociative amnesia.
Also that she has flashbacks and nightmares of memories but can’t properly access them. And the way memory recovery can have a painful reaction and while it’s great to be reunited with people but it can’t really be the same it was before. And the deep reaction she had to hear her voice making her have to bolt from the situation,  feels like it can’t be her, even when she knows it has to be.
Flashbacks: Clearly was shown multiple times, not just under Skrull manipulation. They are even triggered by reminders of her past and under stress. They are disruptive to her life and are also shown to be disjointed.
Hypervigilance/Excessive Fight Response: She absolutely is almost constantly in fight/flight/freeze mode. We can see her have a pretty impressive startle response and easily switching to her "fight" mode. She can't shut off her way of handling things or really being casual in case only a few situations.
Identity Confusion/Malleability: She literally has multiple ways she presents herself. Changes wildly on her circumstances and manipulatable. Her parents seem to be trying to tell her to be calm, not fight, not be emotional and she completely tries to prove them all wrong, is super into her pilot identity, then Yon-Rogg is horrible manipulative and forces her to be something else. Know the Skrull also shifts her, making more of a one-man band instead of the loyal soldier even changing the way she was dressing.
Nightmares: These are directly referenced by her and Yon-Rogg. The nightmare is really relatable and pretty accurate for trauma memories. They are of her past/trauma but with confused details and trouble placing them. Even shown to prevent sleep to the point she doesn’t even want to sleep.
Paranoia/Anxiety: Falls a bit in the adage of "just because your paranoid doesn't mean their not after you" there really were shape-changers, but her immediately switching to grilling people to check for Skrulls (like when the neighbour comes to Maria Rambeau's house) shows a state of paranoia and being on edge. Always doubting thinking everything.
Re-Victimization/Distorted Perceptions of Abusers: The implied abuse of her biological parents visibly including controlling er behaviour, interests, identity and emotions. Also pretty likely including some physical aspects having them shove her to the ground. While in a lot of ways joining the Air Force is highly bulking her upbringing, it's also directly subjecting her to a situation of more people controlling and deriding her. There is also going to be more violence forced on her.
Then with the Kree, she is obviously most close to Yon-Rogg, out of obligation likely but she doesn't reach beyond him to form other bonds and while she does rebuke his statements she does seem to follow them and lets him manipulate her and directly send her to the Supreme Intelligence to mess with her mind. She doesn't seem to realise how manipulative he is being, constantly undermining her emotions and ideas. He also holds his "saving her", giving her al her "power" and "worth". Even seemingly saying she is only alive through his blood. This connection doesn't break till she is shown obvious lies he and the Supreme Intelligence forced on her.
Strong and Explosive Anger/Rage: Anger is one of the emotions she shows most visible. It often is expressed in active violence and can cause involuntary usage of her powers. It's also something used against her by her father, Supreme Intelligence, and Yon-Rogg. The last two are actually really good at using it as a control tactic even liking it to the direct device that reacts to her powers which are strongest in relation to her emotional state.
