This week on: can I find it on ao3 or do I have to write it myself: Bucky Barnes raising his three much younger sisters while struggling from being the only survivor of a car crash that welded a metal arm onto his shoulder and got him a job at SHIELD. Of course he meets and falls in love with Steve, his youngest sister gets snagged by Tony Stark as a science geek, and Natasha enjoys having three younger girls to train in the arts of pranks and chaos and also violence, but yknow.

One-Shot a Day, Day 4: Power Outage. RvB
Day 4: Power Outage. The overnight blizzard has caused a power outage. Thankfully the cabin Tucker, Junior, and Wash are staying in has plenty of firewood and candles, and the three brought plenty of card games and board games to keep them busy.
“Hey, bud, how long have you been up?” Wash jogs down the stairs, spotting Junior sitting on the couch, doodling in a notebook, blanket draped over his hoodie-clad torso, taking note of the early time; about six-thirty.
“Not too long, but I moved down here to sleep about two this morning. My room got too cold.”
“Yeah, it’s pretty chilly in here. Had breakfast yet?” Wash tries to set the coffee pot going, not thinking about the lack of electricity until it won’t start, sighing and walking back over to the couch, glancing down to see Junior’s dragon drawings. “I’m going to put some more wood in the fire, and then get me some cereal or something. We’ll have to move all our cold and frozen stuff outside at some point today since the fridge isn’t running.”
“Nope, not too hungry right now. Papa Wash?”
“Yeah?” He smiles at the new name.
“Can I help you put the wood in the fireplace? Dad’s never let me cause he says it’s too dangerous.”
“Sure, I’ll let you help with a couple of small pieces. Big pieces can be really hard to put in cause they roll sometimes, but we can do a few smaller ones instead of one or two big ones.”
“Yay! Thanks!” Junior throws his notebook and pencil on the coffee table and scrambles to the small wood stock they laid next to the fireplace the previous night. The blond man knees down, showing the boy how to put the wood into the fireplace safely, using the poker to make sure the wood is back far enough before they close the door again, rinsing their hands and deciding to get some cereal for breakfast, taking the milk outside and setting it on the porch to stay cold.
After washing out their bowls and spoons, Junior looks at his dad’s boyfriend. “Papa Wash?”
“What’s up?”
“Will you tell me some stories?”
“What kind of stories do you want to hear?”
“I know you don’t like to talk about some of it, but would you tell me about some of your time as a soldier? I want to know what it’s like to be one.”
“Yeah, I think I can tell you some things. I have some funny stories from basic training.” The two lay down on the couch, Wash throwing his arm over Junior’s torso, wrapping them both up in the blanket. “There was this one time in basic,” a chuckle at the memory, “we had this obstacle course we had to do some days in PT. And one of the sections was kind of like a rope wall thing we had to climb. I was terrible at it. Well, that particular day I got my foot caught in one of the ropes, I just dangled there while everyone else was climbing all around me and I couldn’t get free. I had to re-do the course all by myself in front of everyone after they all finished to make sure I could do it in the right amount of time.”
Forty-five minutes and three stories later Wash pauses, glancing down curiously even though the boy can’t see him. “Why have you become curious about my time as a soldier recently?”
“Oh… well. I just am.”
“Junior… what’s going on? If you’re just curious, that’s fine you can tell me, but is there something else?”
“Well… both you and dad were soldiers, so I thought that you would want me to be one, too.” A pause as the boy fidgets slightly, the older man seeing that he wants to say more, so he stays quiet. “And, I figured I should know as much as possible about what it’s like in the military so that way I don’t disappoint you and dad.”
“Oh, Junior.” Wash squeezes the boy tight against him. “Your dad and I want you to do whatever you want to do. If you truly want to be in the military, you can go into the military and we’ll both be very proud of you. But if you want to go to school and become a scientist or a veterinarian, or a nurse, or doctor, or if you want to go to trade school to become a mechanic, or welder, or carpenter, then that’s fine too! We want you to do something that you can be happy or content with. Trust me, it is not worth it to be doing a job that you hate if you have other options. You’re a smart person, and both your dad and I agree that we think you could do whatever you want if you set your mind to it.”
“Oh… So you don’t expect me to go into the army?” Junior squirms, turning himself in his step-dad’s arms so he can face him, concern bright in his dark eyes.
“Of course not.” Wash drops a kiss to the boy’s forehead. “Like I said, if you’re just curious about my time as a soldier I’m happy to tell you, and if you want to be a soldier, then your dad and I will be proud of your choice, but that’s not our expectation just because we were both soldiers.”
“Oh… Okay! I like that much better. Cause I was thinking I might want to be an artist.”
“And I think you’d be amazing at it.”
“Could you tell me some stories about when you were a kid?”
“Did I ever tell you about my cat, Loki?”
“Nope.”
“Ooooh man. We had him back when I was a kid. Loki was always getting into trouble. One time he got stuck in a tree in our backyard.”
“Oh no!”
“Yeah. My mom’s about to call the fire department when dad stops her. Says he’ll handle it. So he sends her inside and gets out his chainsaw. Dad was never a cat person. So he starts to cut down the tree, but it falls the wrong way. Right into the power lines!”
“What happened to Loki?!”
“Poor cat was electrocuted, falls thirty feet out of the air, lands on his feet, and then walks away like nothing ever happened.”
“Wow!”
“Yeah! Another time, we found him in the dryer once ma had finished a load of laundry. And another time we found him in the engine of dad’s truck. That cat lived to be twenty-five years old.” Wash continues, telling him a few more stories of his childhood, Junior giggling as he obviously embellishes a few of them, and that’s how Tucker finds them close to two hours after Wash had come downstairs.
“Hi, dad!” The boy calls, having stayed in his facing upward position so he could see Wash’s face while he was story-telling, giving him a perfect view of the open landing above.
“Morning, T, nice of you to finally join us.” Wash grins up to where his boyfriend is standing.
“Yeah, I must’ve really needed the sleep. What have you boys been up to?”
“Wash has been telling me about when he was a kid! He had a cat named Loki that could live through anything!”
“Ooooh, that sounds fun. Have you eaten yet?”
“Yeah, we both had cereal. The milk is already outside to stay cold. I didn’t measure, but it looks like the blizzard last night dropped about two and a half feet of snow, but I turned my phone on to check the forecast quick, and it looks like it’s supposed to start warming up enough tomorrow to melt it. But who knows how long the electricity will be out, so we should probably move the rest of the cold stuff our there and surround it with snow.”
“Oooh, I’ll put my snow clothes on and pack the snow around stuff if you and dad bring it out!”
“Sounds like a plan to me. Let’s let your dad eat breakfast first, though, okay?”
“Okay. Oh, dad! Wash taught me how to put small logs in the fire this morning, too!”
“I hope that’s okay with you? I didn’t let him put in anything too big.”
“Yeah, that’s fine. He’s grown a lot since last year, and I trust your judgment.” Tucker finally descends the stairs, dropping a kiss on his son’s forehead and his boyfriend’s lips before walking into the kitchen, grabbing a pop-tart and heading back into the living room, nudging Wash feet. “Move, lemme sit.”
“That’s pleasant.” The blond grins at him as he moves his feet, plopping them back down on Tucker’s lap after he sits.
After Tucker finishes, the three don their winter clothing, Junior bundled heavier than the two adults, still volunteering to stay outside and surround their food items with the snow to keep them cold. They set to work, carrying the food out and insulating it.
After that job is done, Tucker sets to work turning on and heating up the gas stove to heat water, dumping in hot chocolate packets once it’s hot enough and passing mugs to his son and boyfriend, picking up his, and then settling on the couch with them again.
“Dad, Papa Wash?”
“What’s up?”
“Can we play some games? Like Uno, or Clue or something? I’m starting to get bored. Wash and I were gunna play more of the racing game today, but we can’t do that until the power comes back on.”
“Yeah, go pick a game and we’ll play!”
“Yes! Be right back!” Junior hops off the couch, running up the steps to his room where the game bag had been placed, running back down with the whole bag a minute later. “I thought it’d be smarter to just bring the whole bag so I don’t have to go back up when we want to change games.”
The trio spends the afternoon and evening playing various games like Uno, Clue, Sorry, and even a round of The Game of Life before deciding to break for dinner. “Wash, will you go out and grab the stuff out there that we need for the quesadillas? I kept the chicken in here thawing cause those will cook with the gas stove and don’t need the oven since we can’t use it right now.”
“Yeah, sounds good to me.”
Once Tucker has the ingredients, he sets to work, cutting up the chicken, placing it, cheese, sauce, and beans on tortillas, folding them, wrapping them in foil and placing each of them on a stove burner, keeping a careful eye on them to ensure nothing catches fire as they cook.
“Dinner’s ready, guys,” Tucker calls, carefully pulling back the foil from the last of the quesadillas, setting them on plates for each of the others to grab as they come into the kitchen and dining area. “Hey, Junior, are you going to sleep down here tonight or do you want to bunk in mine and Wash’s room if the power still isn’t back on?”
“I’ll just sleep on the couch. It’s pretty comfy, plus I’m getting too big to be sleeping in the same bed as y’all.”
“Okay, just wanted to make sure you were comfortable.”
“Yep! Can we play another game of Clue after dinner?”
“Sure, bud.”
After dinner, Tucker sets about finding the candles he knows the landlord stores for power outages, lighting them and setting them around so they can see, Wash re-stocking the fireplace with more wood, also grabbing more from the covered woodpile on the deck to bring in for the night, taking some up to his and Tucker’s room, rekindling that fire, too.
After a few more hours of games, and Junior nearly falling asleep during the last game, Sorry this time, Tucker tells his son it’s time for bed and that tomorrow they’ll put the tree up and decorate it weather they have electricity for the lights or not since it’ll be only two days until Christmas.
The three trudge up the stairs, Junior to put his pajamas on and brush his teeth, Wash and Tucker retreating to their room for the evening, taking a few candles with them for light, making sure Junior has his battery-powered lantern and that all the candles downstairs had been put out and dosed with a slight bit of water for safety. “Come in and tell us goodnight before you head downstairs, J, but make sure you knock first if the door is closed in case we’re still changing.”
“Okay, dad.” Junior’s voice muffles as Wash closes the bedroom door behind them, him and Tucker changing into their pajamas as well, each man throwing on a pair of sweatpants and an old t-shirt, not needed anything heavier due to the fireplace in their room.
“Goodnight dad, goodnight Papa Wash. I love you both.” Junior walks into the room, his father having opened the door after they finished changing, signaling to the boy he could come in whenever.
“Goodnight, Junior. I love you, too.” The couple says in unison, Wash hugging him and dropping a kiss to his forehead, before the boy’s father moves to do the same.
“If you wake up cold in the middle of the night cause the fire’s dying, come wake one of us, yeah? I trust you, but I still don’t want you putting in new firewood by yourself, especially not in the middle of the night, okay?”
“Okay, dad, I will.”
“Good. I love you.” He drops a second kiss on his son’s head before Junior turns and walks out of the room, the couple hearing his footsteps fade away down the stairs.
“You know, I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of hearing him call me that.” They each step into the bathroom, brushing their teeth and readying for bed in their normal routine for whenever Wash decides to stay at Tucker’s. “So Junior and I had a talk this morning,” Wash’s voice is soft as the couple crawls under the covers, the dark-skinned man tucking himself into the light-skinned man like normal, and Tucker notes the slight caring concern in the voice that he gets when they talk about an important subject.
“Yeah?” Tucker turns his head enough to make eye contact with his boyfriend. “About what?”
“His future job. He was asking me all sorts of questions about what it was like to be a soldier. At first, I just thought, ‘well, okay, he’s a ten-year-old boy that’s interested in this kind of thing.’ But then he kept asking about things, and when I questioned him about it he told me he thought we would want him to become a soldier because we both were, and he wanted to know what to expect that way he could have plenty of time to be prepared and not disappoint either of us.” A sigh from the younger of the two breaks the silence that had been left by Wash finishing his sentence.
“I wonder where he ever got that idea.”
“No idea.”
“What did you tell him?”
“The truth.” Wash pauses for a second, internally marveling at how much Tucker truly does trust him with his child; it’s still so hard to believe sometimes. “That we both want him to do something that he can at least be content with, and hopefully happy doing. And that if he truly wants to become a soldier, we’d be proud, but that doesn’t mean we won’t be proud if he does something different. That was okay, right?”
“Yes, Wash, that was wonderful. You did great. You know Junior really does see you as another father, right? He was ecstatic when I asked him what he thought about you moving in with us.”
“Yeah, I know. I just… Sometimes it doesn’t seem real.”
“I know. Did he say anything about what he might want to do after he found out we don’t expect him to go into the military?”
“He said he might want to be an artist. He’s good at it. I’m sure if he applied that into digital design he could do really well.”
“I bet he could make a killing at that. That or an animator of some kind. But he’s got plenty of time to decide and even change his mind. I can’t believe he’s going to be eleven in a couple months, though.”
“Ugh, stop that, you’re making me feel old.”
“It’s cause you are old.” The younger of the two grins, laughing when Wash playfully slaps him, pretending to be offended.
“Really? Cause I’m pretty sure old guys can’t do this.” The blond slings a leg over Tucker’s waist, straddling the younger man and leaning down to kiss him, grinning when he hears Tucker mumble the word ‘asshole’ against his lips.
“Yeah, but you chose to have me around.”
“True.” As the word leaves Tucker’s mouth the light from their bathroom, which had been on when the power went out the night before, flicks back on, the heating system almost kicking on due to the thermostat being in the cold hallway, not the room filled with the heat from the fireplace.
“I’m going to go lower that temperature so it doesn’t run too much overnight since we have the fires going.”
“Sounds good. I’d like to not wake up in a puddle of sweat.”
“Agreed.” Wash climbs off Tucker, heading into the hallway, and Tucker stands to turn off the bathroom light, getting back into bed when Wash walks back into the room.
“Come ‘ere Mr. not-so-old guy,” Tucker smirks, kissing Wash again as he climbs into bed. “Let’s get some sleep, I have a feeling we’ll be playing in the snow with J tomorrow.”
“Agreed. Goodnight, Tucker, I love you.”
“I love you too, Wash.”

Chapter 18 The Bell Doesn’t Dismiss You (Tedgens)
More slurs, shitty parents, and violence
~~~
He was definitely drunk. Mom was the only one there. I should call her. She probably wouldn't pick up. She's definitely pissed at me. Not that I blame her.
I should go check on her in person. Keith is probably still there. But it's my mom. I need to know she's ok.
I find myself scrounging around the kitchen for something to eat. I feel bad for just leaving like this. He's still asleep and I don't want to wake him just to say bye.
Why is this kitchen so big! I can't find shit. Where the fuck is the cereal. I could just not get breakfast.
"Good morning." Well he's not asleep.
Wow. How do he look that good after just waking up. That's some bullshit.
"Morning." I smile over at him, fully aware that I look like I was just hit by a truck. I don't want to leave without giving him a good explication, but that's a rough conversation.
"Whatcha looking for?" Henry walks closer.
"Something to eat." It's his kitchen he'd know where stuff is.
"Well what do you want to eat?"
Anything? I literally do not care, I'm just hungry.
"I guess cereal." Everyone has cereal right? That seems like a fair request.
Henry opens the drawer next to me. It is filled to the brim with cereal. What kind of Willy Wonka shit is this. Every fucking cereal known to man is in that drawer. What is this house?
"Take your pick." Henry gestures dramatically at the cereals. That adorable dramatic dork.
I guess I'll get some Frosted Flakes. That's always a safe bet. Pretty much zero nutritional value but it's food! Henry grabs a bowl and spoon, and some milk out of the fridge.
"Thank you." I pour out some cereal and eat. The familiar taste of Frosted Flakes, solidly mediocre.
"No problem." He kisses me lightly on the forehead. His lips are so soft, I nearly melt. "I'll be upstairs if you need me."
He exits the kitchen and goes back up the stairs. And I didn't say that I have to leave. Shit. I'll tell him after I finish eating I guess.
Once I finish eating though I can here the shower turn on. I should just go now. I need to check on her. I just don't want to leave Henry.
But mom. I know in my heart that she's fine, but. If anything happened. She's my mom. I need to know that she's ok.
I hear the shower turn off upstairs. I finish up the cereal and put the empty bowl in the sink. I'll just go up there and tell him that I have to leave his awesome weird house, and his warm grasp, to go check on a mother who might not love me for who I am.
She might not love me for who I am. She might not love me anymore. I can accept my father hating me, I haven't seen him and years. He might as well be dead. But Momma... Just because of something as simple as who I'm attracted to. She's my mother.
I have to leave. I'll go say bye to Henry.
I climb up the stairs and into Henry's room. He's standing in the middle of his closet. He seems deep in thought.
"Whatcha looking for?" He startled me this morning, I'm allowed to return the favor.
He starts blushing like craz- he's just wearing a robe. I just walked into his room without even like knocking and making sure THAT HE WAS DRESSED.
Henry makes some flustered sounds.
"Oh sorry I should have knocked." Ok now tell him you have to leave. It's simple. You'll see him at school later.. "So what are you going to wear?"
Nope, that's not at all what I meant to say. You
dumb bitch.
"I-I don't know" Henry stumbles on the words. I definitely should have knocked.
Wow he has a lot of clothes. How does he afford this shit. Like everything is nice.
Henry steps aside, inviting me to help him choose an outfit. I can see why he's having a hard time deciding. His closet could be it's own fucking retail store.
Some checkered jeans catch my eye. Those would look really good on him. Now what else would look good? I have no idea how to choose out of all of these shirts. He'd look good in all of them. That's a nice turtle neck though. Now shoes... ohhh combat boots.
"These pants and this shirt. Combat boots." I pull out the shirt and pants. I gestured to the boots, they're the only combat boots in there but I wanted to be really obvious.
I set the clothes down on his desk. I really hope that it'll look good in him, not that he'd own them if they didn't look good on him.
I leave the room and hop back downstairs. My car clothes aren't very nice. Not that I have really any nice clothes. I throw on the flannel and the jeans. They look the best together out of all my clothes.
What am I still doing he-
Henry runs down the stairs in the outfit I set up for him. Oh wow that turtleneck is tighter than I thought it would be.
"How do I look?" Henry does a little spin. Fuck he's adorable. How is someone that tall, not that he's that much taller than me, have such small person energy.
"You look great."
He really does.
"So do you." Henry winks and walks past me. Mother fucker knows he's adorable, and he's going to use that to kill me. I'm fine with dying like that.
He enters the kitchen. I follow in behind him. He opens a drawer and pulls out a fucking packet of pop tarts. If I had fucking known he had fucking pop tarts.
"What you have pop tarts!" I don't even care that I've already eaten. I am going to fucking inhale some god damn pop tarts. Henry giggles.
"Yup." Henry tosses me a packet of pop tarts. Man it has been so long since I've had these. And they are just as good as I remembered. "Come on we should head to school."
What school? It's like 6:30, school doesn't start till like 8.
"What it's so early." Why the fuck would anyone want to be on campus that early. And I can't go to school now. If I get to school I won't go home.
"Yeah I have a zero period. But I'm sure you could hang out." Of course he has a zero period. Henry looks real awkward. I can tell that he doesn't want me to be alone. That's nice of him, but I can take care of myself.
"No it's fine." Say the thing dumbass, "I should go check in with my mom." Mom is left alone with a definitely drunk Keith, and I'm here. I should have fucking left sooner what am I doing?
"Oh ok yeah." Henry kisses my cheek. I wish I could take him with me, but it's definitely not safe. He'd also be late to his zero period, we can't have Mr. Valedictorian be late.
"See you at school." I wrap my arms around arms waist. This feels right. I kiss him lightly. It's nice to have this little moment of peace.
"See you at school."
We head out the door. I get in my car and drive away from that awesome house and Henry. I can't think about him right now though. There's more important shit going on.
I pull up to my house. Keith's car isn't here. That's a good sign. I done actually know if Mon is home right now. I guess I'm about to find out.
I don't need to fucking knock, it's my house. I walk through the door. All the furniture is thrown about. Shit.
"Mom!" I call out into the house. I honestly don't care if Keith is still here. I want to see him try and step to me. THIS IS MY GOD DAMN HOUSE.
I hear movement from the other room. Well someone's here. That's good. Well, I hope it's good.
My mom bursts through the door of her room. Not a hair on her head is misplaced. She's fine. Oh thank god she's fine.
"I DID NOT RAISE A FAG." She's immediately yelling. "AND HOW FUCKING DARE YOU NOT COME HOME WHEN I TOLD YOU TO."
It's a miracle I didn't come home when I knew this was waiting for me.
"Mom, it was just a little-" I will keep calm. If you fight fire with fire the world would go up in smoke.
"I WILL NOT HAVE A SON WEARING MAKEUP."
"My friend just wanted to-"
"Oh yes let's talk about your friend. The one in the picture right?" She stopped talking but this sickly sweet tone is so much worse. "You were on that boys bed."
Jesus Christ. I don't even... What am I supposed to do? How the fuck can I respond?
"What does it matter?" I will never understand where they are coming from.
"WHAT DOES IT MATTER?"Back to yelling, great. "KEITH. GET OVER HERE."
Shit. He's here. But his car isn't outside. Damnit, I shouldn't have come. I should have just stayed with Henry.
"What the fuck are you doing here?" Keith walks up and ignore any personal space that I could have had.
Keith doesn't scare me. He's just a bumbling drunk who spends his time here, instead of anywhere else.
"I could ask you the same question." This is my fucking house and I'm not going to let him bully me out of it.
Before I can realize what's happening, he has his fist cocked back and...
Fuck. The left side of my face sears with pain. Shit. My eye isn't opening.
"DONT EVER TALK TO ME THAT WAY." Likes he's done something to earn my respect. Like I should care about his opinion.
"Fuck you" I am not afraid of him.
A punch to the gut, and my knees give out. Jesus Christ only one punch and I'm down. Pathetic.
Keith steps away seemingly proud of himself. Fucking bastard.
"Get out of my house." Keith turns and takes a step. My house, mother fucker thinks it's his house. THAT FUCKING SON OF A BITCH.
"This is my house." My voice feels gravely. It hurts a little to talk. But I don't fucking care.
Keith turns, he looks furious. Good.
A blinding pain quickly spread throughout my body, from my stomach, where is foot makes contact. Shit. Keith kneels down.
"I will not have a fucking faggot in MY GOD DAMN HOUSE." He screams in my ear. As if I wasn't already in enough pain. He stands and leaves the room.
It's just me and mom. She's ok and that's what matters. He didn't hurt her. She's ok.
The look in her eye heart my heart. She shouldn't have to see me like this.
"Mom..." fuck. It hurts so much to speak. It feels like someone shoved sandpaper down my throat.
But everything is fine. Mom's here. She's my mom, she can't just let this happen. She can see how fuck shitty Keith is.
She doesn't come over to help me. She stands still.
"Mom..." I manage to say again, but fuck it hurts.
She follows Keith out. She leaves me here. She left me like this.
"MOM!" I can't move. I want to run after her but everything hurts. God damnit.
I can't tell if I'm crying because of her or because of my eye. But I'm just laying there crying, unable to move. I can hear Keith and Mom screaming at each other in the other room.
I can't live here anymore. I barely live here anyways. I can live in my car. I can't be here. Keith will never leave. It's not like I'm keeping anything valuable here anyways.
I can get away from this.
I'm finally able to pick myself up. I'm going to be extremely fucking late to school. My left eye is basically useless so driving is going to be interesting.
I pull into the student parking lot. 10:00 am. It should be break period right now. I missed two fucking periods. Great.
I grab a bag and grab a glimpse of my phone. Holy shit. That is a lot of notifications. Well it's nice to know they care.
I quickly forge a little doctors note. The lady in the attendance office really doesn't care. I put on some sunglasses so my eye doesn't draw to much attention. Ok. Everything's fine and this is a normal school day.
The lady in the office does not bat an eye at the forged note. She just signs me in. God bless public school.
I step out of the office and into the courtyard. I immediately spot Emma and Henry. They look worried. Really worried. I feel really bad for doing that to them.
"Hey guys." I walk up behind Henry. He spins around. The look in his eye. He almost looked like he was going to cry.
"Ted!" He hugs my tightly. Too tightly. Fuck. It's a nice sentiment but Christ it hurts.
"Hey Henry." I smile to maybe cool his nerves a little bit. I try to hug him back but I don't have the strength right now. Henry loosens his group slightly. Ok that's better.
"You look like shit." Emma back at it again with the snarky comments. You can always rely on her for those.
"Always a pleasure Perkins." Emma smiles sincerely back at me. She's a good person. I look back at Henry. He still looks terrified. "I'm ok Henry."
"No you're no-" He begins. I just went through quite a lot and I just want to have some bliss. So I cut him off by kissing him.
"I am fine." It's a blatant lie but I really hate seeing him worried.
"No you're not." Henry pulls off my sunglasses. Shit. Now the whole courtyard can see my fucked eye. "What happened?"
I should tell him. He deserves to know, he's been worrying about me. But I don't really want to tell him. It just really fucks with everything.
"I can't live with my mom anymore."
I’m still breathing, Chapter 23
‘You don’t trust him, do you?’ Loki asked Clint.
The two were in the living room, reading quietly. Sophie was in the adjoining kitchen with Owen, having a talk.
‘No. I don’t. Do you?’ Clint looked up at Loki.
‘Nope. Something isn’t sitting right with me.’ Loki glanced over his shoulder to look at said man.
‘Steve is going to speak to Fury later today. He wants more details on Owen. Considering he’s going to be here in the base more often. We want to be sure of who he is.’
‘Good. But if SHIELD are up to something, I don’t think it will be so easy to find out. We just need to keep a close eye on him and make sure Sophie is safe and happy.’ The god grumbled.
‘I don’t like the fact that he thinks he can waltz in here and act like he’s got a daughter.’
Loki understood that Clint was especially annoyed and on edge considering he’s a father himself. Clint always had a soft spot for Sophie too. Loki appreciated that. Especially when there was situations like this.
Owen smiled as he looked at his daughter. ‘I am truly sorry about your upbringing. I know it won’t have been easy. I really wish I had been there for you.’
‘It’s alright. It’s made me who I am.’ Sophie shrugged, not wanting to talk about that as she took a sip of her drink.
‘You and Loki are really close, huh? Is he good to you?’
‘He’s amazing. I don’t know what I would do without him. I really love him.’ Sophie said honestly, her eyes lighting up as she spoke about him.
‘Even with his past and what he did?’ Owen asked.
‘We’ve spoken at length about both of our pasts. It doesn’t change anything. We are similar in a lot of ways. It’s like we’re made for one another.’
‘Really? He has a troubled past too?’
‘Yes. But I am not talking about that, it’s not my place.’ Sophie said defensively.
‘Of course.’ Owen nodded. ‘So, tell me about you. What’s your favourite film? Colour? Food?’
‘I wonder what they’re talking about.’ Loki muttered, looking at the two again.
‘Don’t sweat it. I’m sure he’s just catching up with her. He has a lot to learn about her.’ Clint assured Loki.
Wanda and Pepper joined Clint and Loki not long after.
‘How long have they been in there for?’ Pepper asked.
‘An hour now.’ Loki grumbled, folding his arms over his chest.
‘He seems nice enough.’ Wanda sat back on the sofa, opening a packet of pop tarts. Loki proceeded to steal one from her, earning a scowl from her.
‘It’s all an act. There’s something not right about him.’
‘For the record, I agree with Mischief for a change.’ Clint said.
‘All I see is a man who wants to get to know his long lost daughter. His powers are breathing under water, not telepathy or being able to tell where his daughter was all those years ago. It sounds to me more like her mother’s fault, not his.’ Wanda said.
‘I dunno. A man who knows he has a kid, if he truly loves them would move the entire earth to find them. I don’t understand why he wouldn’t keep looking once he was saved from SHIELD. He said that he was trapped by Hydra for fifteen years. Sophie was on the streets at that time. Surely with help from SHIELD he would’ve been able to find her.’
Loki nodded in agreement with Hawkeye.
‘It’s maybe not that easy. She was on the streets and off the radar until her bloods taken at the hospital alerted SHIELD. But it makes sense as to why they wanted to bring her in.’ Said Pepper.
Loki and Clint shared a look with one another, still not entirely convinced. Loki was just glad he wasn’t alone in his thoughts and unease with Owen.
He was rather relieved when Owen left and Sophie joined him, plonking down on the sofa next to him. He wrapped an arm around her and kissed her temple. ‘All ok?’
‘Yeah. We just talked about, stuff. I think he’s trying to make up for lost time.’ She shrugged and hugged Loki.
‘So he should be. Keep an eye on him, Soph. Take your time with trusting him. He has a lot of making up to do.’ Clint said and gave her a pat on the shoulder before he left.
Sophie looked back at Loki, confused.
‘We’re all just concerned and looking out for you, love.’ Loki assured her.
‘I know. And I’m really grateful.’ Sophie smiled.
That afternoon Loki and Sophie were training again, this time working on her powers. She was practising phasing through a wall and also down through the floor.
‘Can I try something?’ She asked Loki.
‘Depends on what that may be?’ He cocked an eyebrow at her.
‘Give me your hand.’ Sophie put her hand out expectantly.
Loki gave her a dubious look, but took her hand. Before he had a chance to protest, she pulled him towards the wall and phased through, taking Loki along with her. The two landed on the other side and he looked at her, completely stunned and amazed.
‘How did you know you could do that?’ He asked, eyes wide.
‘I… Have no idea. I just wanted to see if it would work.’ She said sheepishly, grinning.
‘Thanks for using me as your guinea pig.’ Loki winked at her, but he scooped her up into his arms and spun her around, laughing. ‘You’re already getting to know your powers on a more personal level. You know what you can and can’t do. It’s only upwards from here.’ He said proudly.
‘I couldn’t do it without you.’ She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him.
The couple went to their rooms to get changed, they planned to go to the cinema that evening with Wanda, Vision, Thor and Jane. As a triple date night.
Loki walked into Sophie’s room as she was just finishing off her hair. He was momentarily stunned by her beauty as always. More so because she was wearing his favourite dress of hers. Her emerald green one that reached just above her knees.
‘Ooft, you know that dress always gets me.’ Loki said as he put his hand over his heart, making her giggle.
‘I know. That’s one of the reasons why I like wearing it so much.’ She grinned.
Loki crossed the room towards her in two large steps, a mischievous look on his face when he looked down at her and licked his lips. ‘You know, it would look so much better in a pile on the floor.’ He wiggled his eyebrows playfully and circled his arms around her.
‘So would your dashing suit.’ She teased back, sliding her hands underneath the back of his shirt and stroking over his skin.
‘Oh no, no. This suit doesn’t end up in a pile on the floor, that’s outrageous. A neat pile on the chair would be acceptable though.’ He winked at her.
‘But it’s ok for my dress to be in a pile on the floor?’
‘Yep.’ He chuckled and stopped her from saying anything more by pressing his lips to hers. ‘Of course, if you’d rather, we could just, take our clothes off, and put them, all in a neat pile, and stay here, instead of going out.’ He suggested, kissing her between almost every word.
‘As nice as that would be, we promised the others we’d go.’ Sophie leaned back slightly, catching her breath again.
‘Hmmm. Well, afterwards you’re all mine.’ Loki hummed and ran his nose up her neck, breathing her in. He was obsessed with the smell of her.
‘I don’t think I will complain at that.’ She grinned.
‘Mm, I almost forgot. I have something for you.’ Loki reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small velvet pouch.
‘For me?’ Sophie gasped when he handed it to her.
‘Who else?’ He smiled. It grew even larger when he watched her open the little pouch and her face lit up.
It was a beautiful emerald necklace with a gold snake around the outside of it as the case. It was on a golden chain to match.
‘This is beautiful, Loki. This must have cost a bomb.’ Sophie said in awe as she held it in the palm of her hand so gently.
‘I tried to find something as beautiful as you, but that’s impossible.’ Loki reached up and stroked her cheek with the back of his hand when she blushed.
‘Well, this is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. No one has ever…’ Sophie choked up slightly. ‘No one has ever given me anything like this before.’
‘Here, let me put it on for you.’ Loki said softly, taking it back from her and having her spin around.
She held her hair up out of the way so Loki could put it on for her. It sat nicely on her chest and looked perfect on her. Loki smiled and guided her to the mirror so she could see it. She looked at Loki standing behind her, smiling happily.
‘Thank you.’ She turned around to face him properly and hugged him tightly.
She knew she was never going to take it off aside from to shower. It made her feel so warm and fuzzy inside.
‘I love you.’ She smiled up at him.
‘I love you too.’
