Butcher and the Beauty

summary : you a sweet assistant for Agent Laswell with the assigned integration partner of Ghost. The reader is gender, race-neutral, and described as being fat. Ghost wants to die by the thigh. Ghost is also a bit of a freak.

TW : MDNI, no smut but graphic violence is alluded to with some on page. No use of Y/N. The reader does want to have their nails painted. 2nd person POV my beloved.

Your fingernails are a mess. Bit too long, one nail a little jagged, cuticles further up on the nail bed than you like. Really you need to make time to go to the salon this weekend. Oh didn't Kate say something about going Thursday with her wife? Maybe you could join them unless it’s a date night wouldn't want to be third-wheeling on that.

Now what design should you get? Roses? It's too early in the spring for that. Cherry Blossoms would be too basic though. You could do Crocus or Ivy, that would look pretty with maybe a more neutral background.

A wet crack that you know is bone breaking interrupts your thoughts, followed by a scream that has that broken scrape to its edges that comes from too much use. Looking up you see only the broad back of night that is Ghost at his bloody and violent work. Along the edges, you see a twitching body that toes that line of just being a split seams sack of meat and broken bones that sometimes makes noise.

You didn't think you would get used to this part of your job as Kate's assistant. But after one particular 'guest', whose crimes had started with animal abuse and ended with mass murder had said things you did your best to forget, well you got over it real quick.

Your stopwatch buzzes. Your part of this interrogation is about to begin. The beauty to his butchery. The soft pretty thing untouched by the grizzly display. The one holding his leash. It is a dynamic that makes you one of the best integrator teams. Just after John and Kate who have this disappointed parents front they put up that makes even the hardest crack in shocking ways.

(Kate has become accustomed to being called 'mommy' much to her horror she had confessed over drinks one night.)

"Ghost love," Word like the whisper of a whip with how ridged the Lieutenant becomes. "Give the man a break please." He nodded, turning on his heel and coming to your side like a loyal guard dog.

He tugs off one blood-soaked glove revealing his pale hand tattooed with its bones, like an x-ray in living motion. You felt positively Victorian in how your heart speeds up and air stuck in your throat at the display. The reveal of hand and wrist is as intimate as a lover wearing gossamer lace. Wordlessly you handing him a bottle of water brushing gently the violence-warmed skin. His eyes are as sharp as the knives he hones flickering from the contact point to your gently parted lips. Crinkling in what you hoped was a fanged smile he tugs the bottom of his mask up to drink. Letting you catalog each slivered scar that graced his skin the way stars do the night sky.

"Pretty thing so soft and just as sweet." His voice is rough as dark as the shadowed corners of a haunted house. Setting the bottle down next to your hand his fingers gently skimming your soft skin, both of you shivering at the contact. It is no wonder, you think, that there is a betting pool of when you two would finally knock boots.

"You're going a little extra rough with the prisoner today, did something happen this weekend?" Asking him with one of your softest voices the one for crying children and feral animals, all creatures that were likely to bite.

Rolling his eyes. Hip settling against the table's edge. Boots shifting to slide along the edges of your feet. "Tried to find a good shag yea? But ended up with a twiggy thing waist big 'round as my arm. Got 'er all warmed up and dripping but when I go to finally get mine. Couldn't fit, well she tries to be sweet begs me for a minute to just go 'head. So I do but end up twisting my PA. Had to take it out 'cus it was making me swell up and bruise. Bloody tip got a dent, a bruise, and is swollen fucking 'ell it's uncomfortable."

You try not to simultaneously wince and laugh. "Poor thing." Feeling a little bold you rub circles along the back of his bare hand. His eyes flick to watch as he slides his hand closer to you a silent invitation to continue.

"You know what lean meat is good for? Fucking casseroles. Naw lovie, need me something marbled with fat, nice and tender. A good ribeye or brisket just falls apart on my fingers, something I can sink my teeth into." He leans in closer, you can see a spray of blood, like freckles, across the cheekbones of his mask. Brown eyes like grave dirt, the soil rich from blood soaking it. "Need something soft like you."

You tremble anticipation clawing along your spine across the plane of ribs and hipbones the chilled fire like a cautious lover. "Oh?"

"Soft things like you, know how to have fun. Can slap that pretty arse and toss you around. Bruise those thick thighs while kneeling at your feet. Spend hours making you moan my name." His ungloved hand has moved to grab your chin tilting your face up. The touch is blister hot, phosphorus at ignition deadly, and oh so bright.

You open your mouth the tip of your tongue grazing his thumb. Sucking at the digit and swirling it in your mouth for a moment before freeing it with a pop. He growls like a starving dog.

"Oh for fucks sake just ask me your bloody questions so I don't have to watch anymore." The prisoner spits out a tooth and blood. Dangling from the ceiling like a cow after slaughter carcass dripping blood.

Ghost's eyes flash with irritation at the interruption. You can't help but smile. Circling your fingers around his wrist with a far more intimate moment in mind as you tease him. He groans and your thighs part at the sound desire a bubbling pool.

"Give me and what's mine a minute." He snarls out, your eyes flicker down his body watching with a pleased buzz as he adjusts himself.

"yours huh?" Whispering as your eyes lock back with his. Something like blood covering volcanic glass after it's slashed across the throat of a caught thing is spoken of between your bodies. An offering you give on bent knee or a back against cotton sheets.

"Not going to let you go, ever. Not when I've got my teeth in you." Its threat and promise tied with red silk ribbons and iron padlocked chains. As inevitable as death. Not that you mind.

i was re reading your cowboy price and in one of the tags you mention how ducks heard a lot about ghost but cant say anything (when she first meets ghost on assignment) does that mean goose has heard things too?

like she off handedly hears a comment about some otherwordly thing ghost did, didnt hear it was ghost/forgot about it, then years later she wakes ghost up at like 3am going 'that was you!?'

I think for the most part Price has tried to shield Goose from the realities of his work. He might talk about his team generally, maybe share a few anecdotes about less military related things they've done, but not anything mission related. Goose would have heard about a Simon that cracks terrible jokes and makes tea at 4am, a Simon that had a bit of trouble in the past but is making a solid go of it now. She'd hear from Soap about how Ghost is a good mate, how he's always got his back and is the most loyal, trustworthy, man in the 141 ('sides your da of course).

Duck hears about the Ghost that can't sleep, that stares at the wall for hours, that has pits of a deep seated anger in him("I can't see the bottom of it sometimes, love." Price tells her), that burned his own tags when he found his family dead. Duck looks at Ghost that first time she sees him out in the field, and sees a man who scares others so they don't see how terrified he is. She knows Ghost as someone willing to do what needs to be done to a suicidal degree, someone that can't touch other people without worrying his anger will rub off on them, that scrubs himself raw in the shower on bad days just trying to get the stench of corpses off his skin.

Duck knows Ghost. Goose knows Simon, but she doesn't put together that her Simon and the Simon that Price sometimes mentioned are the same person. Price is careful to keep Goose out of the loop on the rougher parts of his job, because in his eyes she doesn't need to know it, it's better to keep her ignorant and hopeful that he'll keep coming home. It's just for Duck that he breaks down, that he sits on the edge of the bed with his head in his hands and asks her how he's supposed to save a man that's already dead. It's Duck that rubs his back and whispers soothing words, that never tells him to leave even though she desperately wants to, because she knows he would, and he'd never forgive himself for it.

I think it's Duck that floats the idea of Ghost retiring with Price. "We have that little guest house out back," She reminds him softly, "You could bring Simon home, give me that son we always talked about." And Price chuckles, her voice so warm and genuine in his ear. He'll think about it, turn the idea over in his mind until his hands have hewn off the rough edges and he can present the idea to Ghost. It'll be a rough transition, he thinks, but Duck never asks for anything if she doesn't mean it, and he'll always give her anything she wants. Besides, it'll be nice to have an extra pair of hands around the farm, and when Goose comes home for the holidays maybe she can show Ghost around town.

No but. part of the reason it bugs me that Percy and Nico never actually deal with all the shit between them (no, Rick, Nico telling Percy he used to have a crush on him isn't the same thing as them working through all the shit between them) is that if these two could talk through their incredibly messy past relationship and start over in a way that would allow them to actually work together as opposed to just being on the same side and working towards the same goals they would be so good at dealing with immortal shenanigans. Percy's gift for getting exactly what he wants in the short term combined with Nico's gift for creating lasting, meaningful relationships with immortals? They'd be unstoppable. Largely because they'd cover each other's weaknesses, or at least mitigate the effects somewhat: Percy fixates on getting what he wants in the short term to the point where he always seems to forget that making an enemy of beings that can destroy you with a snap of their fingers and curse you on a whim historically hasn't worked out well for anyone, and while it's largely Nico's incredible willingness to walk through fire for anyone who shows him kindness that wins immortals to his side walking through fire does tend to get him burned quite a lot before he benefits. And I can prove it would work to their mutual benefit if they could manage to work as a team, because we have an example of what happens when they do successfully tag-team an immortal: Bob.

Percy's quick thinking removes Iapetus from the board! Throw a Titan in the Lethe, tell the amnesiac that crawls out you're friends, boom: incredibly useful short-term ally to help you finish your quest. But as we see in HoH, Bob immediately turns on Percy when he learns it was Percy who took his memories, because... well, he has no reason not to. Percy saw Bob as the means to an end, not as a person who might learn who took his memories and get mad about it, so once the quest was done he forgot about Bob completely. It just did not occur to him that this could come back to bite him, because Percy doesn't tend to think in long-term plans. And his failure to think in terms of the future beyond that one quest in this case could very easily have gotten him and Annabeth killed; he'd given Bob no reason to remain loyal to him, because "How can I ensure that if Bob learns who stole his memories he won't get angry enough to seek payback" isn't a question it ever occurred to him to ask. If it had just been him in that equation, he and Annabeth would've died in Tartarus. Fortunately it wasn't just him, though!

Now, there's no way Nico could ever have gotten Iapetus into the Lethe. Could he have defeated Iapetus some other way? Probably. But there's no way he could've wiped his memory even if the thought occurred to him (and even if he could bring himself to do it; given he got mind-wiped in the Lethe he might have some qualms about doing it to someone else that Percy obviously wouldn't), since it was only Percy's control over water that made that possible. But it was Nico who thought about Bob and how alone he must be and took the time to befriend him. I don't think there was really any sort of plan attached to it, I think Nico is just an empathetic and compassionate sort of person who wanted to help Bob, if nothing else because he knows what it's like to be alone in a world you don't know with your memory erased... but then, Bob does say in HoH that Nico asked him to help Percy and told him Percy was a friend. It is possible that that was just Nico's affection for Percy talking... but it wouldn't surprise me if Nico did consider the question of what would happen if Bob learned what Percy did to him and wanted to take steps to mitigate the fallout. And that's why Bob jumps into Tartarus in the first place and comes back after learning what Percy did: Nico wanted him to help. Nico said Percy was a friend. Percy may have made Bob out of Iapetus, but it was Nico who made Bob into an ally. And while it takes a lot more for Nico to really benefit (another trip to Tartarus is no small ask), the benefits are in proportion to the risk: he's got an immensely powerful ally for life, and that wouldn't have been possible if Percy hadn't dumped Iapetus in the Lethe to begin with.

Basically the one time we actually see these two work together to handle an immortal in both the short and long term it works out shockingly well for both of them, while when they handle immortals separately Percy tends to be screwed in the long term and Nico tends to be screwed in the short term. I want to see them learn to work as a team so they can work together to handle immortals more often, it would be fun!

Definitely the guy who pretends to be a hardass but is a massive softie at heart. And it's hardly that. He's just very frank with his words and isn't very affectionate, but he really does love his team. They're everything to him. He's winning if they're doing well, and there's nothing Merrick likes more in life than winning.

Classical music enjoyer.

Pretends he doesn't understand the bear jokes made about him. Absolutely is aware what a "bear" is in regards to the gay subculture. Thinks it's so fucking funny and quietly eats it up every time. He also enjoys that they'll call him "papa bear" sometimes, always teasing and sometimes as a ref to the gay-subculture joke, but it makes him feel nice that they more or less know he's there to protect them.

The rock! Not Dwayne The, but he's the guy on the team everyone can rely on. If there is nothing else to hold onto, there is Merrick. He is aware and very proud of this fact.

Very good cook! Kinda specializes in Italian american food. Really likes pasta.

Incredible guy to have a heart-to-heart with. For someone who seems pissed 98% of the time he's actually very laid back and non-judgmental, so mixed with the stalwart protector vibes and boom: Like every Ghost (Or even just teams they work with for long enough) will recall some convo they had with him that just let the world stop for a moment. Shit is healing magic. Has been in the past and will be in the future a good solid shoulder to cry on. (Just not literally. Please, he has tissues. Spare his shirt.)

Absolutely so adores the boys, even if they don't really realize it. Like even over his other teammates he's known longer, he just adores them to no end. They're Elias's kids, he'll say, he owes it to the man to look after them. But that's not his only reason, and it's hardly a reason at all. Logan and Hesh are his boys. (Yes, even Riley falls into this.) Was crushed after the beach when he realized the consequences of letting the boys go after Rorke. He lost. And Merrick hates nothing more than losing.

Hates mint flavored anything. Even toothpaste. Especially ice cream.

Merrick is unflinchingly loyal to Elias, to the point that he could point at a cliff and say "Jump Tom!" and Merrick would fly off without even a chute to slow him on the way down. It's not something even Rorke got from him, and it only cropped up once Elias took lead of the team... after Caracas.

Actually likes kids. He wouldn't mind having some of his own, but work comes first, so he's alright with just spectating rather than being a parent. Plus, he's not very sure how he'd do with the 24/7 care of a kid. Playing with them and babysitting is one thing, raising a child is another. That's a can of worms he'll leave well alone...

Mama's boy. For life.

A guilty man. He doesn't like to talk about it, unless the situation calls for it (Like during a heart-to-heart.) but it's not that he thinks he's a bad person: He just thinks he could have done better. Related to him liking winning and hating losing... he remembers each tally on either side of the board.

If you wake him up before 10 on a Sunday you better have a damn good reason. Someone dying isn't even a good enough reason. He's slept through base attacks.

Favorite color is teal, and there's a reason for it: His high school sweetheart, whom he dated for all four years and broke up with because he went to basic, ADORED the color. Painted her room the color, her nails every Friday, every notebook she owned was a shade, etc etc. He's not still mopey over her or anything, he just hasn't found a different color he'd care to like as much as teal.

Dog guy. Absolutely pats the shit out of Riley, who cannot get enough of it. He does have a favorite dog breed, American pit bull terriers cus of their big heads, but German shepherds are alright in his book.

Beard care to the max. Oils and combs and that shaving foam pot with the bristle brush. Hesh came to him wanting some advice for his own facial hair and Merrick had never been so ready for anything in his life. Broke that shit down like the birds and bees talk.

Will take the clothes off his back for someone he cares about, will ask them why the fuck they don't have their own?

All of the people he's ever met in his life remain important to him in some way shape or form.

•I already said this in the first chapter butttttt kai is definitely a golden retriever boyfriend, he’s just so damn stupid, and he has a bright personality. But when someone fucks with you in anyway … let’s just say he gets scary 😭 , and I don’t mean that in a cringe way , that man will kill for you . And make sure you’ll never find out 🧍🏽‍♀️he could go to 0 to 100 real quick !!!

•Kai loves being around you , no matter what . Oh your going back to your dorm ? Or home (that’s if u don’t live on campus) it doesn’t matter he’ll be behind you , and he’ll lowkey invite himself to stay the night at your place , like this man literally lives at your dorm/house , like I’m not joking his toothbrush, clothes, blankets etc . Is at your place even if you have a roommate or you live with your family , surprisingly your roommate/family love him! And says he’s welcome anytime! , yeah you definitely need space from him. “Y/n!! Let’s watch a movie!”

•I don’t want to be that person but I will be , he definitely has home problems , that boy ain’t got a daddy (just like me fr 🤠) when he was two years old , his dad left . And his mom always works . She’s barely home , and when she is , they don’t really talk , and when they do they always fight about the dumbest things , so basically he ain’t got no dad , and his mom is a workaholic, and he’s a insane psychopath! w for his parents fr !!!🥳 that’s part of the reason he stays with you , he’s alone most of the time , that and he likes to have you close.

•also I will be that person again🙃, when your sleep , and he’s laying on the floor next to your bed (he refused to stay in the guest room , he says your room is more comfortable.) he definitely the type to get hard from just being near you , and he has to release his aching pain some how ….👀 now he’s respectful he’ll make sure he’s quiet (even tho he doesn’t want to be.🤠) and he’s makes sure to clean up after , don’t hate but he’s definitely a whimper 😩 like he bites his lip when he’s coming to his high , his hand going up and down on his length. 😵‍💫 he just thinks about how you would feel on his length and how he would just claim you as his , all he can think about is how tight you would be … “f-fuck , y-y/n I’ll be g-good , just be mines , p-please”

•now let me tell you this , he’s definitely not a virgin, his body count is two , everyone on campus thinks he’s a play boy but naw 😭he has a low body count and he’s loyal to one person and that person is only you. That and all of his team mates and friends are play boys so that’s were the expectations come from fr lol .

•now , he does have siblings(he has 3 other siblings), but he has never met them (well kinda of) ,the first thing he knows about his dad was when he was starting college and football he was meeting everyone and he met a cheerleader , she kinda of looked like his dad , I mean the pictures of his dad he had she looked like him , and she had the same last name as his dad (Kai has his moms last name) curiously he wanted too know more , so he went digging and fount her instagram, he saw photos of her family and sure enough he saw his dad … he definitely stayed away from her when he fount out his dad , left and had a new family, a family with another woman , and new children, a child that HE goes to school with , someone HE shares the flied with basically, he lost it , bro was definitely feeling all types of Emotions , actually as matter fact , when he first fell for you , yk at the football game , the reason why his head was out of the game and the team was losing , was because his dad was their , not for him , hell his dad probably didn’t even recognize that Kai was playing, his dad was their for his daughter. The cheerleader. Kai was feeling anger, sadness, he wanted to go up on those bleachers and beat the hell out of his dad…all that was running through Kai Head was “how dare he leave me , and have a new family. How fucking dare he come here . And act like I don’t exist. How dare he.” But when break time happened and he bumped into you near the concessions stand that’s when he met you .Suddenly he felt wanted, he knew he had to have you.

•now let’s talk about Kai’s mom , like I said she’s a workaholic, she wasn’t married to Kai’s dad when he split , and she works as a nurse, she picks up shifts and works all day / night ,she really didn’t talk about Kai’s dad , while he was growing up , and refused to talk about him , when Kai wanted to get in contact with his dad . She’s a nice lady tho , when she was at home , Kai dragged you to his house to meet her , and surprisingly you and her bonded , then she left for work . Kai looked disappointed but he’s used to it 🙃

•Kai just needs love and attention, bro is , Touch starved too😭 he just needs some love fr , so no matter where y’all are , he will always be holding you hand or holding your waist , or just lean against you , bro just down bad fr 😭

•he’s your best friend, as you put it , but I’m telling you now , that man is trying to be more then friends, like he’s literally insane over you . And even if you don’t like him like that , that’s okay , you’ll never get rid of him!

•this man drives , so your a passenger princess , so when you guys go out , he likes to blast music and put his hand on your thigh , and he says it’s not werid, but you’re like “🤔” he definitely has no chill , like I said he loves holding you . So his hands go to your thighs when he drives you , too school or anywhere else

•I have a feeling that this man listens to indie and rap , I’m talking like gorillaz and Marc demarco , jid , sometimes Kodak and nardo wick when he’s feeling devious 🤭 he also listens to glass animals, anddddd tame impla and Tyler the creator😤

•let’s do say , someone fucks with you , In anyway I mean he fought Cameron Harris for you , he definitely was trying to kill him , and he would if his friends didn’t pull him off Cameron , but let’s say someone disrespect your name or spreads Nasty rumors about you , that man is ready to split whoever skull open for you , like I said he’s bat shit crazy, he literally thinks of you as a god . He thinks your his savior damn near 😵‍💫 like he can’t have no one talking down on your name 🗣️

•overall If I had to rate him on how dangerous he is I would say 8.9/10 like he’s insane and basically he has nothing to lose , he’ll go to war for you any day , if you say to , he will , he just real like that🤭💅🏽.

to elaborate, he’s like... the most desired out of everyone (he gives most eligible bachelor vibes) and the team has him to thank for all the extra publicity and support they get from a wider audience aside from adolescent, teenage and middle aged men.

he likes to act dumb like he doesn’t notice all this extra attention he gets, especially from women, but it’s obvious that every time he goes to a conference, or he’s on the field, or taking a break on the bench, he is literally basking in the screams and praises of his name or the number on the back of his jersey; it feeds his ego until it’s overflowing and spilling over. that smug smile he wears is always plastered on his face because of it.

also because of all this attention, he’s one of those players that barely show up to practice. he’ll really only show up a couple times a month, and it’s an even rarer sight if you see him at morning practices, the ones that occur when the sun is just peaking over the trees and tall buildings on campus and the sky is rich, navy blue hue. it’s not even because he’s busy with other things like school or a job, he just doesn’t show up because he ‘doesn’t feel like it’. coach erwin smith verbally scolds him for his lack of team spirit and collaboration, but coach levi ackerman simply just makes him run and do suicides until he nearly passes out from exhaustion.

eren still does what he pleases though, and somehow maintains his position of the team’s quarterback. as many absences as he has, he can still keep up and is knowledgeable of team plays and strategies.

definitely the one to play jokes and pranks on the rest of the team alongside connie. more on that soon

back to what i was saying about him being the local manwhore though (as cliche as it is, it fits this version of him), a lot of women and even some men want a piece of mr. yeager and he thoughtlessly entertains any flirtatious encounters he may come across. lowkey he’s kinda superficial, and a liittle shallow, but always get what he wants. if he does end up getting with someone for the long term, the lucky girl wouldn’t fall for his beguiling smiles so easy; they’d humble him, making him a better person and that would make him fall deeply in love with them.

in the pic jean looks like he was attending a conference of some sort. therefore, i like to believe he never liked going to those things, and his cute lil thick girlfriend me as well as his manager forces him to attend and participate. i hc that he doesn’t really like being in front of flashing cameras and reporters all that much (camera shy <3) . he’d rather have scouts come to his games and hunt him down for questions afterwards.

if one of those programs should happen where high school football teams, or a group of kids from a rec center shadow his team for a whole day, i feel like he’d be very involved with the younger kids. he’s really eager to teach them all the skills he’s picked up over the years, run a couple plays and give them tips to succeed if they wanna get into the sport or get drafted in the nfl.

i hc that he would do like... commercials for things and get brand deals n’ stuff because he just seems approachable, despite not liking being in front of a camera in that way

expanding on what i said before, there was a little teeny bit of resentment he held towards eren because he got to be quarterback instead of him, and he gives ‘ren shit for it sometimes ( ‘ren is offended and acts like he doesn’t know why but deep down he has an idea, and taunts jean about it). but when it’s crunch time and they’re in the zone, they work so well together; they are definitely a dynamic duo and no one can stop them

anyway, yes. armin is definitely very beefy here as a football player and we love that

naturally, eren is his best friend on the team. matter fact, he’s the one that convinced armin to join in the first place. he did really well at tryouts and practice, so they also made him apart of the starting lineup as a (full back) running back

building off this, i feel like him (and connie) are the most agile on the team. sure everyone is fast and has to have a certain level of agility and speed to even be on the team, let alone be a starter, but armin...he’s just slightly better than everyone else in that department

i headcanon that he’s the rookie of the team, meaning he joined a tad later than everyone else, which was strange because usually coaches levi and erwin don’t accept no late comers; if you miss tryouts then that’s it. but that just made everyone believe that he had real potential if they accepted him anyway

armin initially saw football as a hobby, an extracurricular if you will. but the longer he played for the team, the closer he gets to his best friend eren whilst making new ones, the more he started to realize that football was more than a hobby. it was a de-stressor, he really enjoyed being out on the field everyday. it made him forget about all his troubles for a while

speaking of troubles, he’s in college (as i previously alluded to), majoring in environmental science and ecology. he usually has a lot of stuff on his academic plate but he manages it really well and maintains a good academic standing

after his first game, a month after he joined, all the girls flocked to him and sweet ‘min isn’t used to getting attention like that, so it left him a bit frazzled, trying to listen to everyone at once and give them a thoughtful answer, while flashing them a sheepish smile (which only made his new harem swoon even more)

he’d never admit it to anyone, but all this attention definitely boosted his self esteem and his ego. it’s something he now anticipated after a game or practice, and he only got more suave and sly, taking everyone off guard

def the type to invite the boys to train or hit the gym outside practice and then hangout or something afterwards

okay UH when i first saw the fan art for reiner my immediate thought was he is a line backer. like immediately. to me it suits him well because he’s so bigggg n’ muscular and beefy like YUMMMM he’d be tackling mfs

another one of those kinds of players that would take the game a little more seriously than others; like jean he does things by the playbook and does it very very well

part of this is because reiner is that team member that has been playing football for most of his life: as a fun little thing in middle school, played all four years in high school, and intends to play all through college. his dream since he was younger is to be scouted by one of his favorite teams, get drafted, and go pro

spoiler alert: he does. (when they announced his name, number and what team he was gonna play, he was so shocked and almost teared up as he walked up the stage to accept his jersey. he’s so cute. )

reiner just.... looks the most natural in football attire let’s be real with ourselves. like it suits him. he loves the game so much

i headcanon that he becomes the nfl’s “it boy”, like he’s the talk of the organization for a while, people won’t stop talking about him, companies are reaching out to him for endorsements and brand deals bc why not. sports magazines reach out to him as well and he also looks natural posing for a camera as he does on the field

in his future, i can see him being inducted into the nfl hall of fame. that, he will cry at, because it’ll make him feel like he accomplished something in his life, and that people acknowledge him.

unrelated but connie is one of the most agile/fast people on the team, right next to armin. so what’s a few laps? the coaches think. the way the coaches see it, all that talk he was chatting about the latest kickback, they’ll wear him down so much he’ll be too sore to attend

connie’s position... he gives me tight end, maybe even a cornerback . i’d like to think he really enjoys playing offense more than defense.

to be frank, everyone on this list has their own little group of fangirls, and constance eats up the attention he gets. before he started playing football, it was never like this, and he wasn’t all that well known, he just blended into the crowd. but playing for his college...despite it actually being kinda fun, was the best decision he ever made

probably knew jean and was friends with him in high school and just when jean boy thought he’d escape connie (he’d never tell him or anyone how much he’d missed him at their high school graduation) there he goes at the information sessions....then at tryouts...and the locker rooms and practice... and on the field. all the while connie is just smirking at his friend’s annoyed expression

back to what i was saying before, connie is probably the prankster on the team, well, more like comic relief to liven things up. he is definitely the type to do that thing when you wring a towel up tight, all that pressure packed up in a stiff coil, before releasing all that pressure in the form of a loud smack! on someone’s unsuspecting bare ass

jean is the victim of this most of the time

everyone is howling in laughter, even armin let’s out a hearty chuckle

and that thing i said about eren being included in these schemes? yeah if the pranks are on jean, then he’ll gladly oblige because they have this unspoken rivalry between each other. but connie always gets in trouble, eren almost always slipping away at the last minute with a snicker

in this case, i think it’s a given he’s one of the coaches for this team. if this was like good cop bad cop, levi would be.. the ‘bad’ cop

LOL he’s more strict and kind of demands more from his players. the way he carries himself, he’s intimidating and just exudes authority. but the boys got used to it overtime

very punctual. he takes that seriously so the boys try their hardest to be early or arrive on time. levi don’t got time for all that shit, he just wants to do his job and get today’s session over with

in terms of coaching, i hc that levi handles practicing whatever plays are in the playbook, taking the time to make sure everyone knows what they’re doing and that they’re doing it right. that doesn’t mean his patience is extensive though, he will get irritated if someone is doing something wrong too many times. he whips them into shape by threatening to bench them or ‘sarcastically’ joke that he’ll give one of the boys a broken bone, “so now you really will be on the bench because and won’t be able to play.”

back when he was in college he was one of the star players on his team. he used to be the kicker, the muscles in his legs taut and strong; he never missed btw. but for the majority of his professional career, i’d like to say that he played wide receiver, like jean. he seems like he’d enjoy weaving past the opposing team (his more slender stature coming in handy) and running damn near the entire field to catch passes

the competition couldn’t keep up with him

he was that guy that had never touched a football in his life, but as soon as he started, he was damn good. eventually got inducted into the hall of fame. one of the few times he genuinely smiled at something

out of everyone on this list, him and erwin have suffered the most injuries. one time when he was younger, levi was tackled down and he fell wrong, dislocating his entire shoulder

he loves the boys so much, outside of football, he cares about their well being and what’s going on in their lives, he’s just awful at expressing it

first thing that came to mind for erwin smith was ‘head coach’. i think it makes sense considering his ranking in the aot canonverse

referring back to my good cop/bad cop comparison from before erwin is the ‘good’ cop. and good is laying it on kinda thick. bc erwin can still be strict, he’s just slightly more lenient then levi is

if the boys had to choose, eight times outta ten, they’d pick coach smith

in terms of his role on the team, most of the time he’s the one in charge of days where the boys condition their bodies, so like endurance training, increasing their stamina, flexibility exercises etc. truthfully speaking though, him and levi’s roles are interchangeable ; they’re perfectly capable of doing each other’s jobs

but i can see erwin yelling out counts and commands during practice a little too well. sometimes he’d even do conditioning exercises with them bc “what’s the harm in that ?”

side note: he’s tall and muscular and strong it’s crazy fr

also, coach erwin is a milf chaser . kiindaaaa unrelated but it’s definitely true. esp a milf who happens to be a black woman. just imagine he’s goin to a high school game to scout out and new players who show great potential, and then he notices this gorgeous, dark skinned woman a few seats away and he just has to go talk to her . turns out her son is on the field he’s been the one that he’s been eyeing the whole time . he puts his silver tongue to use and flatters her almost immediately. by the end of the night erwin just might have scored a new member of his team and a new stepson

but besides that, he finds that a lot of single moms often offer him a lingering glance wherever he may go. i mean who can blame them ?

i feel like back when he was younger and he used to play he was a lot like reiner. which kinda explains why reiner admires erwin so much , bc he sees the resemblance too. erwin was the “golden boy” in his days.

in high school, he played quarterback and in college he was positioned as center . bc again, him leading offense and yelling out commands to the quarterback is very on brand for him

levi and erwin first met at a college kickback (yes levi occasionally went to those bc he was on the football team, but he hated every minute of it) . they met at a bar , talked about stuff, discovered they both played ball and their friendship went from there. things got interesting when they say each other on opposite sides on the field the following saturday, their schools playing against each other . they continued to hang out and meet for drinks after that .

erwin is in love with the game it would take something really serious to force him to stop playing . that serious thing, was when he tore his ACL. the way he and the opposing team member charged at each other, you’d think they were in a brawl to the death. one wrong movement and a tackle to the ground and that was it. although his knee was burning with excruciating pain, erwin gritted his teeth and stood up on his own , stumbling to the bench with the help of other coaches and teammates. he didn’t think it was that serious so he didn’t get it checked out right away

it was this mistake that cost him . now he has a long lasting knee pain which prevented him from seriously playing. he can still do physical activity, it just took him a while to get back to it

naturally, he got inducted into the hall of fame early on in his nfl career— well, at least earlier than levi did

and like levi, he cared deeply for his players and their futures, on and off the field <3 he’s such a sweetie

Chapter Twenty-Nine (Part 2)

“Mad,” Izzy is saying, “Where does the time go, really? How is it the end of August already? The year just flies by, doesn’t it?”

“You sound like an old person when you say things like that,” I point out as I spray down my desk with multi purpose cleaner.

“When you’re my age you’ll get it. One day I was twenty two and then I blinked and I was twenty seven. It will happen to you too.”

“I’m sure it will,” I flip quickly through a paint water stained notebook of old sketches and then decide to chuck it into the bin, “Or maybe not, maybe I’ll be young and sexy forever.”

“Right.”

Simon comes up the stairs carrying his lunch, “Oh, you’re still here,” He deadpans, and I grin at him, “Not moved out yet, Simon, sorry to disappoint.”

“Yeah I was hoping you’d be gone, never to darken this door again by the time I got back from Subway.”

“Nah, you’ll miss me.”

He laughs, “I will.”

“We’ll all miss you,” Izzy said, “You’ve been the most perfect addition to our little team here, I don’t want to think about how it’s going to be without you.”

“Messier,” I say, looking at Gabriel’s desk space, tidy now, but not for long, “and without a desperate intern to get your stupidly specific coffee orders.”

“Ugh! Devastating,” She throws her arms around me in a tight hug, “Simon, can’t we keep her?”

“No,” He smiles and leans back against his desk, “I wish we could, but NCAD awaits, right Evie?”

“Mm.”

“But I will say that you’ll be missed, not just by us but by our clients. You’ve made some important people very happy this year, and I have to give you props for that. There’s a lot of things we really couldn’t have done without you.”

“It’s this creative brain,” Izzy declares, knocking on my head. “She’s a genius. We should crack her skull open to figure out the mystery.”

“If you ever want a job, Evie, you know where to come,” says Simon, “Like, no hesitation, there’s a desk for you at Mezzotint, I’d give you a job right now if you wanted it. Or a glowing reference for anybody else who wants you.”

“Though they might have to fight Simon for you,” Izzy grins.

“Thank you, I’ll… Yeah like I’ll think about it. I’m not totally sure what I want to do yet, you know, whether I’ll go back to college or not. There’s a lot of things to mull over.” Izzy lets me go and I continue putting my things into a cardboard box. “Like, maybe I’ll hit you up for a reference, I don’t know.”

“I’ll give you one either way,” He shrugs, “Tell them to call me any day and I’ll chew their ear off about how badly they need you.”

“But you wouldn’t work anywhere but Mezzotint,” Izzy says, “You’re too loyal for that.”

I laugh, “Yeah, maybe.”

“Nah, maybe she has bigger plans,” says Simon, “Better things to do than illustrate a few birthday cards and draw signs, right Evie?”

“Well, we’ll see,” I say cryptically, “You never know what I might be thinking of next…”

Izzy cackles, “I love it, so mysterious. Well, reach for the stars, girl, you could succeed at anything you wanted to. I swear to God, fuck NCAD, you don’t need them.”

“I’ll tell them you said that.”

“Five years and you’ll be on the cover of some artsy magazine, and we’ll all read it and be mad jealous of you.”

“Yeah, but don’t forget where you came from,” Simon grins. “You’re a Mezzotint girl first.”

Time moves slowly in the liminal space between finishing my internship and going back to college. It’s like wading through syrup, the same feeling at that strange, timeless week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, and I wonder what I ever did with my free time when I had it before.

Jude stays over every night in order to save me from the strange terror of my empty apartment, as well as himself from the equally strange terror of his empty home now that his family have taken to the beach house for the last weeks of summer. I start to get a taste of what it might be like to actually live with him one day. He cooks every meal and I do all the laundry. It’s an easy rhythm we fall into, but besides those minor responsibilities we mostly lounge around pretending we’ve forgotten about our exercise regimes and fucking indiscriminately on every surface of the house. It’s fine, some day soon I’ll have a new housemate and we won’t be able to do this. We’re just taking advantage of the situation.

It’s comforting to turn around and see him there, watching TV while I read a book in the kitchen, shaving his face while I shower, cooking eggs in the morning with the radio playing when I come downstairs hungry.

“Wow, you’re perfect, aren’t you?” I say as I wrap my arms around his bare torso and plant a kiss between his shoulder blades.

“I’m just giving you a taste of the good life. Look at all you could have.”

I laugh and pinch a crispy rasher from the plate beside him, “Mm, yeah, the ‘if I drop out of college and move to another continent’ life.”

“All I keep saying is that you wouldn’t regret it.”

“Is that what this is all about, then?” I tease, “You’re on your best behaviour so that you can manipulate me, right? And then as soon as you have me in your dastardly clutches you’ll try to turn me into a Born-Again Christian wife who cooks and cleans and-”

“Yes,” he whirls around to circle my waist with one arm and kiss me, “That’s what I’m doing, I actually fucking hate cooking, this is just part of my plan to ensnare you.”

I gasp, “I can’t believe it, it’s all been a ruse! All of the sex and the sweet talk, you’re going to take it all away from me.”

He scoffs, “No, c’mon, not the sex, not even the evil version of myself would want to give that up.”

“I didn’t think so.”

“Now that you’ve brought it up, do you feel like it now?” He keeps one hand on the frying pan while he boldly slides the other down the back of my pyjama shorts, “I can hold the eggs for a few minutes.”

I laugh, “No, sorry, I need food now.”

He gasps, “Offended.”

“It’s Friday, remember?”

He nuzzles into my cheek and gently bites my earlobe, “No I’ve no clue what day it is anymore, they’ve all just blended together.”

“Well it is,” I grab his cheeks with one hand, “I have therapy at eleven.”

“Oh! I forgot, well, eat, quick,” He passes me a plate and starts loading it up with eggs and toast and then gives me a cup of black coffee that’s so strong that I have to assume he made it for himself before deciding I needed it first. “You should ask Helen what she thinks about Los Angeles,” he says.

“I assume she thinks what everyone else thinks: That it’s overpriced and a haven for violent crime.”

He snorts, “You know what I mean.”

“Yeah, I’ll talk to her about it. Maybe she’ll have something wise to say.”

“As is her job.”

I split the yolk of my egg thoughtfully, “Did the movie studio give you a time limit to make a decision about the internship?”

“I told them I needed to think it over, but, um,” he clears his throat, “ideally I’d be able to give them an answer by Monday, you know?”

“I know,” it’s a bit hard to swallow my food all of a sudden, “just, Monday is soon.”

“Yeah. I suppose I just don’t want them to risk taking the offer away.”

“And London?”

“Nothing again today, so I mean, unless they give me some crumbs early next week, I…” he trails off.

“I’ll see what Helen says,” I decide, and he cooks for himself while I finish my breakfast

Strength vs Weaknesses

Sans: He's a good leader who prioritizes his crew above all else. He's loyal and stays level-headed in most situations. He always has a plan and is good at adapting to situations. He’s humble and never under estimates an opponent leading him to make the best possible choices.

Although... he's not morally the best person. He's selfish, and he's aware of this fact, and honestly, he could care less about strangers. Papyrus has become his moral compass. He also refuses to lean on others and receive help. MANS WILL NEVA TALK ABOUT HIS FEELINGS-

Papyrus: Papyrus is extremely charismatic and gets along with almost everyone! He will always help those in need and do his best to see the light in even the worst people. He is very mature and is accepting of life and what hurdles it throws at him. Also, mans got ultimate rizz. You and yo mama gonna like this man.

He's too trusting for his own good and has very little self-preservation. He has low self-esteem, although he hides it quite well under a layer of confidence. He also takes actions that he thinks will be best for people even if others may think otherwise, sometimes leading to his own downfall. (Cough cough, og genocide run, cough cough)

Blue: Is great at using his head in pressuring situations and makes the most creative choices. He's energetic and always is up and at em, from early morning to late in the afternoon. He's also preservers and goes up and beyond, you will never see this man give up for what he believes in and cares for.

But he can also be quite persistent unless you set solid boundaries. He's a little bad at picking up hints and cues and can't read the room for shit. He can be impulsive at times that may lead to future problems...

Stretch: Stretch is always ready to relax and bring down the energy. He's multi-talented and passionate about many things! He is willing to protect people he cherishes with his life, and is loyal to the tea. It makes him great company and an amazing friend.

That is, if you become his friend. Stretch isn't an open person and won't talk to just anyone. He keeps a lot of his feelings bottled up and just blows up at some point. He thinks the worst of people automatically, and has a hard time trusting. If you do something

Red: Strong and reliable; good old Red will never lead you astray! He's rather smart (being the mechanic of the crew), and that makes him a bit cunning as well. He's very in tune with his emotions and doesn't rage as much as people assume he did.

Although Red is good at keeping his emotions in check, he's a bit of an unfiltered asshole. He will say everything that's on his mind and causes a bit of trouble for the crew sometimes. On top of that, he has a huge ego. It's definitely not a complex, but his confidence is unwelcomed by strangers. Also, flirts kinda raunchy so most ladies are not into him. Man got no rizz.

Edge: Edge is responsible and will make sure the ship is running smoothly. Well, as smoothly as he can with such a chaotic bunch. He's kind of the face of negotiations, being able to be stern yet civil. He has many skills and is very mature about many situations making him an amazing team player. He’s kind to those who need it and is always seeking a fair and moral judgement.

Emotionally constipated. He literally has not cried since he was 10, what do you expect him to do? If you ask him for mental support, he will SUCK ASS. He is also incredibly stubborn. If he thinks it is better to do something a certain way, we are doing it that certain way. No buts and whys.

Razz: Razz is the best at what he does. He’s efficient, quick, and works tirelessly at his one true passion: navigation. Although he’s rough around the edges, he is honestly very emotionally understanding. He’s a great person to vent to and cry to when you need to just unwind and let go. He has a very good moral compass and you can count on him to do the right thing.

Ego so big it got two different time zones. Razz is one of the best navigators in the world and he knows it. He likes flaunting it, and not in a “slay girl” way, in a “pls shut the fuck up” way. Since he works so hard, he forgets to eat a lot of times. He also forgets to sleep, shower, stretch, relax, talk to people. Overall, he will store himself in his room for who knows how long, and you will have to drag him out kicking and screaming.

Cash: It’s hard to compliment someone who steals 24/7 but he has some perks! Cash is very observant and can make very astute observations when it comes to relationships and fights. He can pinpoint enemy week points in a flash along with being able to grab intel from towns folks. He’s a hella good actor (liar) and can put on almost any façade for any situation.

Where do we start. He steals constantly, of course, he doesn't steal from the poor and needy, of course. But If someone is walking just a bit too happy, he just has an itch, and then BAM. Gone. He’s also a pathological liar, and always gets caught by Sans. He feels remorse and regret for things he does wrong but often shoves it down in order to keep moving. His habits are not healthy, and he knows more than anyone.

Bear: Bear seems mellow and stupid at times but I can assure you, he’s pretty god damn smart. Bear knows a little of everything, and can probably run the ship by himself in emergency situations. Bear is very sensitive to people’s needs and will make sure any friend and ally gets a good meal. Although he is quiet most of the time he will say encouraging words once in a while.

My baby has no flaws... Jk. Bear is a lot like sans in a way that he does not care for strangers. If you are a innocent civilian, he isn’t to keen on saving you or looking out for your safety. He doesn’t have to, so why should he, kinda thing. He is super afraid of his strength and is crippled with fear at the idea of accidently breaking something... or someone. He is bad at making friends or talking to new people. He’s an awkward lad.

Cinnamon: Wholesome sweet boy. He's kind, a trait that was hard to keep due to his traumatic childhood. He's giving, even if it may be through self-sacrifice, and always puts others before himself. (Of course with moderation). He's goofy and sweet, making him an amazing friend and partner. Mans is respectful as a mtfk and will make sure that everyone feels validated. Honestly, Cinnamon is a very nice balance of all his cousins.

He's kind of dum socially? He is unaware when someone sends him subtle hints and cues. And since he can't really read body language (cause aura doesn't show that much) he can't really tell if people like or dislike him. He's very insecure about his teeth and fails to hide his discomfort when someone mentions it.

When making art for this game, I have found immense satisfaction in attempting to meet FEH on its level and remain fairly loyal to the Intelligence System’s approved content we have. This is remarkably challenging. For me, at least. I find this game’s design sensibilities run very counter to my own. That’s not a critique of any in game art of the characters (although I do think they improve greatly over time) as they fulfill their purpose really well. They are meant to be drawn 4 times max which means they can go pretty crazy on the details. But hahahaha I’m not doing that. Clearly. I’m drawing these guys by hand at different angles and posses fairly consistently, which is just not what they were built for. Don’t think when someone designed Kiran they thought of the person who’d be drawing them chilling ontop of a fridge with a bottle of mustard in their hand, you know?

So naturally I got to do some translating! And that’s the really fun part >:]

There are many things I had to find creative answers for, like Kiran’s face and Alfonse’s stupid haircut. But the one rotating rapidly in my brain atm is the Askr quartet in combat. I wanted lean hard into the fact that these four are, well, very human in comparison to every other combatant that enters Askr. They aren’t exactly helpless nor unskilled. If any of the trio raised their blade at Kiran, they’d start digging their own grave themselves. But the group are regular soldiers fighting against straight up warriors of legend. As individuals, Anna, Sharena, Alfonse, and Kiran are not that strong in comparison. No merges for these bitches they gotta work with what they got. However, they all know that. So they make up for their weaknesses through terrifyingly effective teamwork. Through the power of trauma bonding- I MEAN FRIENDSHIP they become a fucking terrifying force of nature. It’s like pissing off an ant hill or a wasps nest. A lancer goes for Alfonse and suddenly theres a swarm of five level 1 heroes making such a distraction that they don’t see Anna’s axe sweep through their Achilles heels or Sharena’s follow up shield bash.

So this means I get to convey their team composition through their body shapes and give them clear strengths and weakness for the others to cover. Which is just so god damn FUN. Like we all know Kiran is the squishiest of the squishy, so it’s really fun to show just HOW squishy they are through the immediate comparison Alfonse and Sharena. I gave those two sturdier square shapes, and thus making them shorter yet stocky. This makes it look like they could fucking launch Kiran’s bony ass to the moon and back. However, that’s on the condition that either of them could catch Kiran, as their tall slim build implies the lightweight speed they move with. Which is so!!!! Fun!!!! Aughhh big love. Kiran could literal use Sharena as cover to snipe enemies from. Meanwhile Anna and Alfonse are a bit ahead using reposition to let Anna provide swift dps without getting too beat up herself. And by reposition, I mean Alfonse using his shield as a jump pad to launch Anna at the enemy with. You know. Just bro things. Anna’s triangle shapes make her both just hearty and lean enough to pull it off, might as well go for it. Just make sure she’s properly supported and safe by the time the enemy phase rolls around you know?

And I swear, the combos just write themselves too. Like between Sharena and Alfonse, a poor soul gets caught in the worst version of ping pong as Alfonse captain America’s his shield between the two of them. Kiran could then use that same shield like Link does and surf out of enemy range, shooting at the enemy the whole way. It’s fun! These guys have the potential to really sync up during combat and be emblematic of their bonds with one another.

Example, Alfonse. Alfonse could TECHNICALLY be a stronger solo fighter if he ditched the shield. He has the constitution and skill to not actually need the extra protection, and if he decided to two hand his weapon (haha there’s a joke there) the damage he could do would be devastating. However, the shield isn’t for his protection, but to be better help to his closest friends. The shield isn’t taking as many hits for him as it is for Kiran and Anna, who can’t afford to carry shields without compromising their own effectiveness. Plus through creative (and probably not intentional) uses it helps better position them on the battlefield. It’s for THEM. The only time he’s going to stop using the shield is when they aren’t there fighting along side him.

Enter Líf.

He hasn’t had a shield for a long time now.

OCs Jacen and Tiio

Just realized that I haven't made an actual post for my two Corrie Guard boys, and since it's OC sunday I want to fix that <3

These boys mostly show up in my Fox x Reader series but they might pop up in some other stories 🥰

Jacen and Tiio are batch mates and have been together through everything. They were very close with the other three in their squad as well, and got a reputation for having some of the highest scores in teamwork and unit cohesion.

Unfortunately their squad was sent to Geonosis for that first fateful battle, and they watched the other three in their squad fall.

Their brothers died without names, so the moment their natborn leaders started allowing clones to take nicknames, they named each other.

Their names are based off of characters from a random episode of a random soap opera their batch mate downloaded from the holonet when they were little. The five of them curling up in a supply closet to watch it without the kaminoans knowing is one of their best memories together and use their names as a way to honor their fallen brothers.

Jacen and Tiio knew that they may not be able to stay together once the war really started. Thankfully, Fox had heard of their high scores around team work and knew he wanted men like that for the Guard and personally requested they be sent to him on Coruscant.

(maybe Fox also knew how hard it would for them to lose so much so early in the war and wanted to give them a new close-knit unit to work with)

Now the two take pride in their positions in the Corrie Guard. They value their Commander's dedication to protecting others and want to embody that dedication in their own right.

Jacen embraced his individuality quickly, he has several tattoos: The symbol of the Coruscant Guard on his neck, lightning lines running down his right bicep (he misses the thunder storms on Kamino) and a matching tattoo with Tiio of a phoenix on his back, another tribute to their squad.

Jacen's personality can seem abrasive at first. He'll follow orders but does it in the most stiff, robotic way he can when they're given by someone he doesn't like (kind of a malicious compliance thing). If he thinks you treat him and his brother's well, though, he'll be very loyal to you. Once you've shown that you're trust worthy Jacen can actually be quite funny and charming.

(also, bit of a behind the scenes note: the spelling of Jacen's name is actually inspired by the old, no longer canon star wars books. Jacen was the name of one of Han and Leia's sons <3)

Tiio takes a little longer to show his individuality through his appearance. As said above, he does have a tattoo of a phoenix on his back to honor his squad mates, but other than that, he doesn't really care for tattoos personally. He does grow his hair out longer though and likes it to lay in curls around his head and down his neck.

Tiio is much more trusting than Jacen. More of the "give people a chance" rather than the "hold them at arms length" type. It takes a lot for Tiio to write you off as someone he doesn't like. However, like his brother, he becomes extra kind to those who prove they aren't assholes. He's a bit of a stickler for rules, but only because he views them as good guidelines how to avoid getting decommissioned or killed. Gets very nervous when Jacen gets snippy or mouthy with others and often tempers his brother's anger.

Tiio also adores animals, please let this man open an animal shelter, he wants to rescue them all!

General observations:

Let us never forget Rouge's wings are pink here. In sa2 they were black, they have since been purple. I think it's possible she covers her wings in some kind of think fabric or latex to match her outfits and maybe protect her - but primarily for the matchy matchy

In the shiny toy-ish style of heroes, Omega looks incredible. He looks so much better than everyone else.

Team Dark take in turns to be the most determined; it genuinely feels to me like they all do want this. Nobody is just in it for the loyalty or ride.

Team Dark should get to fight Team Rose. I would love them to duke it out with the Girl Scout commander and his two most loyal members.

Opening Cutscene:

First let us appreciate: Rouge just broke in to Eggman's again. Iirc she inserts herself into SA2 basically the same way. Plot driving queen.

It is odd to me that Rouge had no idea what she was finding, but did know the code. This 'happening upon' Shadow has always seemed strange to me and I am suspicious of it. It seems to me they might have wanted her to be looking for him, but bottled it at the last chance. Especially because she doesn't seem to be working for GUN here, this is just very convenient.

Omega is legitimately scary when he's first introduced, with a lot of the hallmarks of classic horror monsters in this first sighting of him (the close ups, the prey-through-predators eyes shot, all the action shots to keep you confused, minimal speaking etc.. I have no statement on this, it's just neat.

It must be quite a traumatising thing to wake up to, but Shadow takes little time to react. I really like that he doesn't recognize his name when Rouge says it.

It is weird to me Rouge just sits in shock at being shot. Was she not expecting a trap? Perhaps she got hit in the head or something?

Omega's aiming just before Rouge splits them up is so funny. I said I wouldn't use screenshots so this post doesn't become too slow to load but look at this:

His hands just circle around wildly. Shadow is going straight for you. Either you're not aiming for him or you're not calibrated correctly my love.

Rouge's exhausted and shocked face is adorable and I love it so so so much. This is peak Rouge IMO

The fact we see Eggman's base trashed - loudly trashed - and he does nothing about it could be a first nod at his current predicament we see in the Chaotix story, but I may be reaching.

I love the start of the chorus as they're coming to an understanding. I love This Machine, maybe more than I love my boyfriend but not more than I love my cat. It's so up there though.

Rouge bounced Shadow off Imega when she scooped him over and he rebounds into a defensive stance. No notes just cute.

Shadow's eye roll as she makes them all put hands together. You just woke up how are you so sassy? Amazing. No notes.

The actual skipped conversation must have been quite short, since Shadow knows nothing and Omega is a new robot, but I hope it included Omega inteoducing himself at least a bit. They don't say his name in this cutscene, or Rouge's but the audience probably knows her. Its just odd to me because I feel like team sonic say eachothers name a lot, but my memory may be faulty.

Seaside Hill + Ocean Palace + Egg Hawk

"Immediate destruction if distracted." Omega fully threatens to kill them if they don't work hard enough. I am not complaining, but he is a scary boy and we should remember this.

We should have known this wasn't Eggman because he reacts to Omega (an obvious E series robot) and not Shadow (a literal living weapon he had had locked away that should not be walking around). But me personally was a dumb kid who was too bad at video games to get to play team darks story before I had to go home so here we are.

Grand Metropolis + Power Plant + TC

Rouge has the least reason to be targetting Eggman, but she is quite determined here. I would suppose it is on behalf of Shadow, since she doesn't know Omega that well to be heart broken for his plight. It's nice to see that she too expresses her sentiment by violence, something often reserved in fanon for Omega and arguably Shadow.

Further to the above: she starts a fight with Team Chaotix literally and only because she is in a fighty mood. They were fr walking away, minding their own business. I also think that Espio's assumption that they might have it in for the client is valid, since they've probably been jumped by enemies of clients before. Rouge is literally just on a warpath and mad at the world. Iconic of her.

Casino Park + Bingo Highway + Robot Carnival

I do wonder what Rouge was wondering. If she was wrong, perhaps? Or what the Chaotix were doing? She couldn't suspect they're working for Eggman, could she?

Omega works in metres because he is no fool

Shadow is actually very calm talking to Eggman here. It suggests that either Rouge has not filled him in on anything much about Eggman, and/or he wants to learn for himself and isn't taking her and Omega's hatred at face value. This may make him seem a bit dozy here, but I actually think it's a sign of how untrusting he is, and with good reason. I have often seen the take that Rouge should have told him what's going on, but I propose that it is possible she told him some, he didn't believe her easily, and so she stopped telling him before the crazier stuff, because he'd never believe that. A bit of a leap I know.

Rail Canyon + Bullet Station + Egg Albatross:

This is the first time I think Shadow seems really determined. I propose it's because Eggman snubbed and disregarded him, and that is literally a tortuable offense. Joking aside, it's nice to hear the change in his voice now he's more set on his target.

Rouge is less sure of herself now. Tbh, it's probably been a really stressful day for her. She may need a rest.

Shadow offering Omega his revenge instead of fighting him for it is a nice touch. What a good team player!

Omega's shaking fist at the fake Eggman gets me. I love it. It's so ott and goofy but also a great way to communicate with his limited face.

The Shadow Android scene is actually quite frightening, like with Omega's introduction it has a little touch of horror. Imagine how you'd feel, if it were my android clone I would feel pretty nauseous and scared.

'Ultimate Life Form Data' - Metal answers the question of 'is Shadow a Robot?' As soon as it was asked, but nobody has ever listened to Metal Sonic about anything, and they aren't about to start today 🥰❤️. But did Metal know what Shadow was? We presume it had seen the Shandroids, and knew they weren't him, otherwise Metal would have just copied one of them.

(Frog Forest + Lost Jungle) + TS

"Talk about being stubborn and full of surprises" is so uncalled for from Shadow's perspective. He's never met this guy, how dare he read him like that.

This fight is so stupid, I almost believe it's just them being friendly. You know Sonic's pretty freaked out at seeing Shadow again, but I have had kittens before and sometimes they just have to show their excitement with biting. I think this might be that? Because Rouge left no particularly bad blood with Sonic. Now if she and Knuckles started it, I would understand the hostility, but Shadow and Sonic totally start this one.

Do you think Sonic felt bad that he went straight in to fight Shadow when Shadow fully just had no facts in his head to help him make good choices? I'd feel bad lol.

Hang Castle + Mystic Mansion + Robot Storm

Shadow tefuses to answer Rouge's question then proceeds to loudly answer it to himself with her just metres away. Keep being you, Shadow.

I like that they refer to Omega to ask if it's the real one, even though he can't - nice team trust moment.

Egg Fleet + Final Fortress + Egg Emperor

'Even if I'm not real - I'm still the Ultimate Life Form' resolving Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) before it even begins. In seriousness, it's quite a contradictory statement, probably because he doesn't know much about what that means. Has Rouge told him? We haven't seen someone explain that in the cutscenes, so I presume so.

Rouge immediately turning away from Eggman's body is so funny to me. 'K cool bye'

The first time I'd forgiven her not seeing that it was clearly Shadow in the goo. But Rouge, come on now. Why would they all be the exact same alien goo container with a spiky starshaped thing in them? You have seen Shadow Android. This shock is not necessary.

Why is there not enough goo to cover the ears? They can hear you guys.

'Hey Omega, did I ever tell you that Shadow is a Robot? And, well, nevermind - good luck." ARE YOU TRYING TO GET HIM KILLED? I also have to presume she genuinely believes this here. It's such a weird line.

Omega is so smart. He has been dumbed down of late, but he's not stupid anywhere here. It is perfectly reasonable to assume that the one kept separately with it's own guard robot is at least more important than all these mass stored without an E unit dedicated to protecting it.

"Some things never change, do they?" How would you know? Did she tell you this? That's such a funny portrait of herself for Rouge to paint. Forever unsuccessfully trying to steal chaos and master emeralds, generally predisposed to being rude and disobedient? Or did he just observe that himself.

They leave it off like Omega may not be a recurring character from here. I wonder if they weren't sure if he'd be liked, since in SA2 they killed off a character that ended up being the most popular thing they'd made since the series began. Nobody is competing with Shadow's cult fanbase, but I wish more people like me loved big robot boy.

Worm Reading - Part 7, Arc 7 Buzz

Ok so confession time, last night I got really wrapped up in the story and read up to Arc 10 without taking notes. I’m gonna go back and skim the previous chapters and record some thoughts. I’ll try to keep knowledge of future chapters out as I go.

Hah Taylor has such a crush. Boy ever since Lisa made her actually notice those feelings she has not been able to get that out of her head has she? I wonder what Lisa’s motivation was behind bringing that up? Hoping Taylor’s romantic feelings will encourage her to stick around?

We can actually draw an interesting little analogy from this sparring scene. Taylor is smaller and weaker than Brian, so she has to be very careful in how she approaches him, and given the chance should choose to just wait out of reach until an opening presents itself. When he attacks her, on the other hand, she has no real way to effectively fight back. This is basically the same situation the Undersiders would be in if they officially take over a territory for Coil. They are weaker in combat than most of the other teams in the city, and have only been effective because they can pick and choose their engagements. They have little to no defensive ability.

Oooh some background on Alec. That’s a crummy situation to come out of, definitely abusive and cult-y. We haven’t really seen the depths of depravity that super-powered individuals can get up to yet; Empire 88 and ABBs are scummy, but mostly in sadly common ways.

Honestly feels a little crummy the way the whole group is pressuring Alec to talk about his past. I get why they need to know the level of threat, but some of this just feels like them wanting to hear the juicy details of life around this famously evil person.

I love love love this entire section of Taylor hanging out with Rachel. I’ve made no secret that I’m a fan of Rachel, and this is exactly the sort of interaction she needs to help her make connections with people. It’s been so obvious from the beginning that Rachel relates more to dogs than she does to people, and she needs someone to be blunt but loyal. Someone who will put in the work to show Rachel that they’ll treat her fairly and carry their own weight, and who cares about her without being condescending. This whole section is so satisfying for me.

Taylor’s new suit-of-bugs approach is handy, though even with her bug-affinity powers I gotta admit I don’t think I’d have the stomach to cover myself like that. I wonder if she’ll lean into this angle? I can picture an older Taylor having a really intimidating appearance as being cloaked in bugs almost like Grue is cloaked in darkness. Assuming she grows more powerful over time, could she reach a point of controlling large swarms into large shapes or figures and using that offensively?

Brian and Taylor are totally correct on the dogs being a liability and in a bad/indefensible position. I understand that Rachel wants to run a punk canine rescue program, but she straight-up does not have the resources to keep these dogs safe, and it’s a problem. This is a time where her defensiveness and instinct to insist she’s self-sufficient is a serious liability.

Awwww Rachel gave Taylor dating advice. That’s both funny and subtly sweet. I just want Rachel to have a friend.

And we have the info bomb with all of Empire 88 getting doxed. I’m actually a little bit surprised, from the interlude with Kaiser and Purity I had kinda gotten the impression that their secret identities weren’t that secret. Maybe I read it wrong, or maybe it was the kind of thing that only people in certain circles knew the truth.

And we have now made my point from earlier about the sparring. The Undersiders are very much not equipped for a defensive fight. Going to ground is the right call, though hopefully there won’t be too much collateral damage from people trying to hit them where it hurts.

Ah, it’s Sophia! I was actually wondering when we were going to run into one of Taylor’s schoolmates eventually. This is, unfortunately, basically the worst one of them to come across...

(Future Knowledge for a moment from reading ahead, spoilers for Arc 9) Kind of hilarious how Sophia blatantly checks out Brian when getting on the bus. If she knew that was Grue her reaction would be sooooo different.

Aww yeah! Distraction makeout! Go for it girl! Let the people who tried to tear you down see you flourishing in the life you’re living now! Admittedly it’s not a totally truthful portrayal, but I can appreciate the sentiment.

Jesus H. Christ! Sophia is a psycho! I mean... I guess that shouldn’t come as a surprise after what she’s already done but like... still kinda caught me off guard a little there. I understand why Taylor doesn’t use her powers on Sophia, and objectively it’s probably the correct call, but I don’t think I’d have the self control to resist covering her in wasps after all this craziness.

Ugh god and she lies to the shopkeeper and slips away again. I find most of the villains in this story entertaining, but I gotta admit I really dislike Sophia and Emma. Which, I mean, they’re serving effectively in their story roles but bleh blech gross hate them.

Awwwww Brian with the shootdown! Huh. I really got caught up in the narrative of Taylor having a crush, I didn’t really consider that his answer would be “Oh uh nah.” His answer was relatively straightforward, I don’t think he handled it poorly, but that sort of rejection hurts no matter how well it’s given. Poor Taylor. Just when she was thinking that her future with this group might be nice.

Uh-oh Purity’s snapped. I recognize various powers have their pros and cons, but I do feel like high-powered flying blasters like her are basically untouchable if they decide to fully let loose unless you have an equally powerful flying blaster/shielder.

Hang on someone took her kid? Oh that’s a whole separate issue from this doxxing thing. Wow that strikes me as a super dumb idea on whoever did that.

I don’t have much to say about the fights with Empire 88

Interesting that Grue’s power makes him scentless. Rachel’s dogs mentioned it in the interlude earlier, and Hookwolf said the same. Honestly, basically none of the fights the Undersiders have been in would have been at all feasible if not for Grue’s ability to heavily shape the battlefield and allow them to break contact when needed.

Speaking of power effectiveness, we have seen a number of fights now where Taylor’s bugs are basically ineffective due to the physiology or abilities of her opponents. I know they haven’t had much down time, but long run if she’s going to be a frontline fighter she needs to sit down and strategize some ways to make her bugs more of a threat. Maybe that means getting her hands on more dangerous types of bugs, maybe that means finding a way to have a larger size swarm at hand, maybe that means experimenting with the limits of what she can and can’t control. But with bigger threats, she needs a better plan of action than “sting them and put flies in their face.”

Wow after you just got trounced by the Empire lieutenants, you’re immediately going out to take on the captain? Uhhhhh that’s not a plan, it’s a recipe for disaster.

Oh New Wave is already here and handling the situation! And the Wards! Undersiders, you need to learn to recognize when a fight is Above Your Pay Grade, and this one is! Sit this one out, let the big guns do the work!

Geez this fight got so ugly. I’m gonna skim over this one in the interest of time. I do like the way that Night has specialized in all sorts of ways to blind her opponents and obscure observation. It’s kinda funny to realize that part of Night’s power must basically be a video-game-style Detection Indicator that tells her if she’s being observed or not at all times.

So Tattletale just straight up tells Purity where her kid is. Probably the right move to bring the heat level down, but... what did this whole escapade accomplish? For anyone? I guess Empire 88 leadership got their cover blown, but somehow I don’t see that hurting them that much in the long run unfortunately. I don’t see what Coil or anyone else gained from this.

Interesting to see the inside of Coil’s operation looks like. He truly is a supervillain, complete with a lair and an army of henchmen. There are logistics associated with that which are usually glossed over by superhero media, I’m curious how deep into that this series will go. Will we see his HR people who hire his mercenaries? The cafeteria and showers? The janitorial staff who clean the place?

Oh oh oh! The missing girl! I did catch that when it got dropped in the news story earlier! Oof. Yeah, we are starting to see that, while Coil is a pragmatic villain, he is still a villain. If he was all on the up-and-up and going to only do nice things then he wouldn’t be playing the game they’re all playing.

Oh now this is interesting. Technically what I just said about Coil also goes for the Undersiders, and I think Taylor has been letting herself forget that recently. Taylor is jaded with the heroes, for good reason. But the truth is people who take the Villain title and roll around in the villain turf wars are out there committing crimes and hurting people. Taylor has only done a couple of actual jobs with this crew before everything switched into Villain vs. Villain warfare. But in the long run, if she stuck around, what would they end up doing? Crimes of some sort. That was what the Undersiders did before she came along, and the others had no problems with it. All of her teammates are here because they want to look out for themselves, even at the expense of others. If that wasn’t the case they could go Vigilante like Shadow Stalker, or Rogue like Canary or Parian. They chose a life of crime, and Taylor let her attachment to her friends blind her to that.

This is also a very visceral character moment for Taylor, because she is basically in the shoes of her old teacher Mr. Gladly. She has just seen someone being victimized right in front of her by someone who she is nominally allied with. Is she going to turn around and walk away because it would be too inconvenient for her to step in?

I hope Angelica recovers ok. I care about the puppers very much.

And she chooses to leave. And they choose to stay. At least for now. That sucks, but I think it’s in-character for both sides. But what does she do from here? If she’s staying true to her moral compass, I think the answer is she should try to bust Dinah out of captivity. But honestly I don’t think that’s feasible within her capabilities alone. And the only way she would be able to get support now would be to go turn this info over to one of the hero teams, which A) she doesn’t have much confidence in, for good reason, and B) would be tantamount to declaring war against Coil and her former teammates. I’m not sure Taylor has it in her.

Ooooh Endbringer. Well, I kinda take it that all of this juicy tangled web is about to get sidetracked. Wonder how Danny is handling all of this?

26 Questions about Run at the Cup.

Hi!

Since I just finished off my 33 chapter Arcane/CaitVi Hockey AU fanfiction, I asked folks for any questions that they might have about the universe (or just for me) around the fanfiction. So I thought that I'd pull them all together, answer them in one big post, and then direct folks here.

My asks are always open if you want to pepper me with more questions - I literally love talking about my process and creating stuff. But yeah, let's get the ball rolling!

These questions have spoilers up to the epilogue (chapter 33) of Run at the Cup.

One of your original goals for RATC was to include a sex scene in every chapter, and you later decided that didn't suit the story that it ended up being. How far, exactly, did you stray from that goal?

I think the first disc stuck to the format of smut-a-chapter pretty well, but as soon as I got to chapter 7 and 8 in my planning, I really had to take a step back from the idea of smut-a-chapter. Part of doing that was a friend of mine pointing out that another fic - breakneck - already was a smut-a-chapter offering, and the other part was around chapter 7 and 8 was when we really got a look at the Landsman abuse and I wanted to focus more on telling a story of healing instead of a sexual relationship. It felt the best narratively for Vi to take a step back and appreciate boundaries, and at that point we were 100% of the rails of the original vision. I also had my friend Felix - he drew the art for the fic - point out that the story was way more important than the smut when I complained that sometimes I just wasn’t feeling up to writing smut.

Caitlyn obviously makes a point to never sleep with another hockey player except for Landsman and Vi. Vi rather vocally does not have that rule. Are there any players we see in RatC that she has a history of that nature with?

Ahh, crucially, Caitlyn and Vi both adhere to the rule of no teammates. I actually think both have had flings with hockey players, but probably not anyone that we spend much time hanging out with. I hint at Sarah Fortune and Vi having a past-tense fling that I never really expanded upon, and at one point I wanted to write some Caitlyn and Evelynn one night stand stuff that never really felt right after I abandoned the whole smut-a-chapter premise.

There are so many characters in ratc, and so many povs, how did you get into each of their heads and give them all their own voice that stayed consistent throughout the story?

So one of my other hobbies - other than hyperfixating on a fictional hockey team - is dungeons and dragons as a forever DM. My rule for creating NPCs is to give them a ‘pillar’ - essentially one solid character trait that I can lean back on when viewing things through their lens. Claggor, for instance, was always trying to teach and never raised his voice. Poppy was always going to be cheerful and loyal. Leona was always serious, except when dealing with Diana. Mylo was never serious, until there was a weak moment. All of those ‘pillars’ helped shepherd me in the right direction - the only characters I didn’t really have a pillar for were the hockey announcers, who’s entire personality can be summed up as ‘hockey announcers’.

When did you realize this was going to become Big™ , or was this all the plan from the beginning?

If I ever knew when anything was going to be big in terms of wordcount, I’d be much more successful at writing. The real time I knew was somewhere in Disc 2 when I had written like 3 10k+ word count chapters in a row. I remember thinking ‘oh, shit, I’m fucked’. What’s crazy about this is that I still feel like I left some story threads on the table - I could write 80k more of just Sumprats shenanigans, easily. In terms of Big as in popularity - dude I have no idea when I knew. I still don't really believe it.

Which was your favorite smut scene to write?

Oh man - hands down the hotel smut scene in the Summer Isles - though that’s technically cheating, because the smut doesn’t actually happen. But I can see it like a shot in a movie - the slow tracking shot over the discarded clothes with some energetic, strumming guitar over top while we see the bed come into frame, the pan over and continued tracking towards the bathroom - all this evidence of wild sex. If the question is ‘which smut scene that’s actually smut’, I’m going with the phone sex scene - it was good to finally get these characters admitting how much they liked one another.

How did you pick and choose which LoL champions (not from Arcane) you brought into your world? As there are so many available and ones you picked seemed to work so well. Was it 'character is hot/cool and I just want to write them', 'I need a champion that would play hockey/act in x way' or any other way

A variety of reasons! Illaoi was included solely because my wife thinks she’s super hot, but for me it became characters I really liked, characters I could see the personality of, and characters I could ape the kit of in some way. Ahri being charming and evasive, Illaoi’s tentacle-like poke checking, Diana being good in close, and Leona being a hard hitting defender were all nods to the league kits, among others. Basically, when I was filling out the roster and was out of Arcane character slots, I started grabbing characters based on what role I envisioned for them on the team and backfilled from there. I’m glad I did their personalities justice!

I'd love to know, if it isn't a bother for you to explain it, the process behind you deciding each character's position on the ice and skillset. I'm basically in awe of how you took each character from the show/game and made them each a particular type of hockey player. But you might have talked about this already so no worries if it's too repetitive!

It all depended on what I wanted to write for the most part, and I approached it from two angles - what was most interesting for me to write dynamically, as in action wise, and what was most interesting for me to write emotionally, as in what they brought to the Sumprats as a whole. I leaned on a lot of sports knowledge that I’ve accrued over my 31 years around the sun, and figured out what archetypes would be most fun and narratively satisfying to convey. So, as an example - Claggor’s soft and assured ‘we’re gonna get you out’ from the show was a big big reason why I made him an enforcer - the quiet confidence and clear smarts. Poppy being undersized but a major bruiser in the game led to her entire personality and playstyle. Ahri being a winking and confident figure in LoL lore led to her being a flashy and charming person with a lot of scoring - etc etc etc. It came together fairly organically!

If you had to pick another sport as the medium to tell the story, which sport would it be? Ik you were intending on making it a hockey story with lesbians vs a lesbian story with hockey, but do you think the sport and play of hockey specifically were integral to how to told the story/the journey of the characters?

This is such a tough question to answer, because I’m not sure I could’ve told it with any other sport. Hockey is inherently chaotic, and the beautiful thing about it is that it comes down to players - you can have a grand strategy, but sometimes it’s just ‘our player is the best on the ice’ and that’s enough. I think there’s probably a pretty awesome Rugby story in here, maybe - or football/soccer - I can see their roles with Caitlyn as an attacking midfielder and Vi as a sweeper or something, but both of those are far more team focused. Also, hockey is lesser known of the major sports, and I felt like talking about how goofy it sometimes is to folks who might not know about it.

What did you learn during/after writing this that you didn't expect?

Such a good question. I learned that I love writing big casts of characters and I learned that I have a knack for conveying what I see on the page. I also learned that I can tell a story that goes every way possible in terms of POV and style, and that having a bunch of threads to tie up is an awesome problem to have. I also learned that I’m somewhat fragile as a creator, and that taking steps to protect myself from having my feelings hurt doesn’t make me selfish - just makes me human.

If you had to support a team yourself (not including the Sumprats), who would you support and why?

Can you imagine Bilgewater Schooners twitter? Can you imagine how batshit insane it must be? I’d be 100% on board with that franchise.

Why wasn’t there more Grapes content?

You all weren’t ready for it. The world still isn’t ready.

Is there something you wished you could've explored more but didn't get the chance?

So many things. So so many things. This is why RATC is crazy to me in hindsight because I felt like I left a lot of meat on the bone when the fic is like 300k long and is one of the longest CaitVi fics around. SarcastCity and I joked about a whole sequence where Mylo strikes out with a bunch of women, I didn't get into the Evelynn sub-sub-subplot, I barely scratched the surface on MOST of the K/Da stuff that I wanted to do, CaitVi adopted a dog at one point, there was an entire anti-police side of the fic that I just cut because it didn’t really fit into the vibe of the fic (you can still see foreshadowing of it in early chapters), there was originally going to be an entire other side to the water reparations where we’d see grainy footage of Silco and Cassandra arguing about it and that’s how a lot of it was revealed - before I decided to make Powder more of a central figure in the documentary. The entire fic changed in a bunch of little moments. Art is cool that way - it kinda leads ya where you need to go sometimes.

Who was someone that you enjoyed writing a lot that you didn't expect to?

When I put Graves into the fic, I never would’ve expected to fucking love writing him as much as I did. As soon as I wrote his first book snippet, I knew that I needed to stop immediately because if I wasn’t careful he’d take over the entire fucking fic. Second place was every scrap of podcast content - it’s so addictive to write this meta-narrative bullshit about your own world building. It’s just giving you a reason to talk about your own fic in universe and I had to stop myself from writing 13 more Taylor Swiffer sequences. Lastly, twitter was always a blast to get going. Shout out to everyone who loaned me their likeness for that!

You’re a pretty big basketball fan Badger, and knowledgeable at that, is there any reason you chose Hockey besides you also liking it? Like, did you feel the “action” would be better?

There are no sanctioned fistfights in basketball, which was a huge L. In all seriousness, I considered a basketball fic before going with hockey because, while I love basketball with my whole badgussy, hockey has so much more meat on the bone with regard to playstyle and expression. You have hitters, shooters, goalies being weird, you’ve got gum chewing angry people and hockey stadium chants. Hockey is a vibe that I really was excited to convey, and basketball - to me, anyways - has less of a physical aspect to it and it’s a little less entertaining to write about. Baskets happen all the time in ball, but in hockey, a goal is celebrated by everyone on the ice, everyone gets a fistbump, and the action stops while the crowd gets to rewatch it over and over. You don’t get any better than that for narrative drama.

You've talked some about the sumprats superstitions, but who is the most superstitious and what are some sumprats superstitions

Ashe is probably the most superstitious, but all sports players are superstitious to some degree or another - especially hockey people. I think every time Leona tapes her stick up, she has to unwind the first piece once - because that’s the way she did it when she scored her first goal. Claggor probably wears the same style of socks that he had when he was 18. Riven’s skates are a size too small, because she believes it makes her faster. Graves needs Caitlyn to tap his post before every game he’s in net otherwise he won’t play.

What was the hardest part for you, as a writer, to get through?

The entire fic came together relatively quickly, honestly. I wrote it in less than a year and most of the time in big 2-6 hour chunks of my day. I think the most challenging thing from a craft standpoint was the Landsman Scandal - because it had so many moving parts and I was using a character invented solely for that sequence in wewon1, and you needed to like her and buy into her right off the bat. I also needed to balance out how heavy the chapter was with moments that the reader could breathe around - I didn’t want to evoke a desperate, awful thing, but I wanted to inform. It took a few days of serious brainstorming before I got it the way I wanted it, and even then I was making edits in the posting window of Ao3. But in terms of actual hardness to write - the run up to the finals was really tough to get through because I felt like not much was happening narratively and I really needed to work at it to get it where I wanted it. The actual physical typing of the story wasn’t hard, but the games were annoying me a lot - they always felt too slow or sluggish or poorly conveyed. The thing I’m most proud of looking back is definitely the Powder chapter - I wish I had done more of that.

Why is Landsman so hot? Why did you have to make Landsman so hot? Should I speak with my therapist about this?

Oh yes. Immediately.

The story focused on Cait and Vi but as a whole was a story about team dynamics - little pieces like Hot Girl Shit, characters we would consider unremarkable as irl players like Poppy or Mylo, the gradual push of Graves to Ekko as main tendie - that grew into their own stories. Was this a case of supporting cast offering spontaneous great idea opportunities that you went along with, or was it always planned that X character would get X storyline?

I didn’t really set out with these storylines in mind, but one of the things I wanted from the get was this line to be true: “Usually, it’s the people who sit five, six seats from the starting lineup that give you the edge. Our job as leaders is to make sure that when those folks’ numbers get called, they’re ready.” - Vi, chapter 4. I wanted to basically reinforce that idea by having the players grow into something that was stalwart and could be relied upon, and just let the characters kinda swirl around with that idea. I didn’t realise that Ashe would wind up being so important but I kind of fell in love with her as I wrote her game - same goes for Riven’s speed and Darius’ faceoff potential.

Which supporting character that isn’t Mylo ended up being your fave?

If it’s cheating to say Sevika, then I loved Poppy. Every scene Poppy is in I just had a blast writing, but gum-chewing, constantly glaring, scowling while insisting she’s smiling Sevika really leapt off of my keyboard. If I allow myself to take credit for any one thing, it’s casting Sevika as a coach.

if Vander hadn't died and had become the Sumprats coach instead of Sevika, would Vi still have been drafted by them and how would she have felt about it?

Woof. It’s hard to see Mel hiring Vander, but say that she did and Vander coached Vi - adult Vi, 32 year old Vi with all she feels towards him - I can only really see it as Vi demanding out. She wouldn’t have the ego to get him fired, but I don’t think she’d be willing to play for him after everything. I also think the Sumprats are nowhere near as good with Vander as a coach - in my head Vander was good enough to drill Vi’s lessons into her head but had no idea how to keep a team intact, and that was Sevika’s specialty - the ‘us vs them’ mentality is all her.

I'd love to hear anything about your writing process. When you do it, how you think and feel about it, etc.

My writing process begins with having a very patient wife who puts up with me being glued to a screen for 6 hours at a time while talking to myself - usually in funny voices or imitating crowd yelling. I also do a lot of my dialogue in the shower where nobody can judge the faces I make - most of Caitlyn’s speech and the podcast dialogue came from me showering and yelling to myself, getting hyped up, and trying to remember lines. I basically do my functional adult tasks with the sequences I want to convey running on my head in a loop, until it’s time to sit down and crank it out. One part of my process that I don’t recommend is that when I sit down to write, I don’t get up until the chapter’s done. For me it’s a straight shot or it doesn’t get done at all - I need the entire flow to work on that one sitting. It has the side effect of my wife watering me and feeding me while I’m glued to banging words out onto a screen, and occasionally I’ll come up for air to refill my water battle and talk to her about her Animal Crossing island or something - anything - that isn’t hockey lesbians, before I go back to my cave.

obligatory question about which scene you were most looking forward to writing

So, chapter 32 was basically in my head the entire time I was writing the fic - everything between chapter 2 and 32 was me impatiently jiggling my leg waiting until I could write the Won’t Back Down song from the crowd. But the more surprising bit was how much I was looking forward to the karaoke scene - I wound up putting it off a few times in the fic until I was finally able to lock it down right after the Landsman Scandal, which felt like a great time to put it - just the idea that we all could use a break - as readers and characters in the story - and then we get one. Also, Pray is a fucking HILARIOUS song and I love that I got to use it.

if caitlyn and vi were to have a dog in this universe, what kind, what would they name it, and what would jinx choose to call it instead

This was actually a cut plot point at one time - the dog adoption sequence. They have a boxer named Bowser who has three legs, and Powder calls him Leonardo because it’s not his name but he squints sometimes like DiCaprio, and one time he ate an entire cheese pizza.

actually, kind of bouncing off my other question, are there any scenes that weren't originally planned that you really like?

Originally, there was no Melvika - it was a Melora subplot. But then I wrote that initial conversation between Mel and Sevika where they meet and Sevika passes her test and I thought to myself ‘oh.’ Every single Melvika moment was unplanned but I loved crafting it, showing this little love story in the margins of the page that was slowly and steadily unfolding.

Did you decide to change any major plot points after you'd started writing?

Two major ones: First and most impactful, there was going to be a riot in the original story that led to the team rallying behind the city - it was going to be this sequence of each of the Sumprats walking into the practice facility saying ‘have you heard, yet?’ that tied in what actually happened. But it felt tonally out of place and I was already really invested in exploring the abuse aspect of the fic, so I scrapped it - it’s a story worth telling at some point but the feel-good underdog sports fic wasn’t the place to explore that space. Another more impactful thing that certainly won’t be surprising to some: Vi’s injury was initially going to be a career ender. When SarcastCity and I started talking around the end of Disc 2, I actually told her that version of the story - that Vi’s knee is busted irrevocably and Caitlyn has to win without her, and the two have to find their way towards one another in a bittersweet finale without hockey to unite them. SC talked me around on that one - made the case that Vi and Caitlyn deserved to play hockey together for years and years, and after thinking about it for a while it really truly felt like I was being sad and dramatic for sad drama’s sake - angst for angst’s sake isn’t something I wanted to play into. So I changed it and it’s a lot, LOT better as a result.

How did you keep everything in order? Did you have an outline?

Calling it an outline is kind of insulting to other outlines, I think - I had an unhinged and fucked up google sheets document that listed the players, positions, and general vibe of their character arc, but I didn’t totally stick to it. I also had a chapter title list that I also changed a lot - I mostly knew my end point was ‘Caitlyn skates for 20 minutes and they come back to win in Game 5 with an injured Vi’ and worked my way to that point.

My changes for Vat7k

I got a new idea for the fanfiction which develops Hugo to be imperfect but at the same time grew to have a complex and developed relationship with Varian, as well as giving Nuru and Yong more time to develop and show up in more chapters and such. I do stand by and accept your points and they can be valid and it makes me wanna change up the concept of Vat7k as a whole. Maybe include Varian's attributes of season 3's character and make him the former criminal of the town before he was a citizen of Corona and the rest of the seven kingdoms as well as me giving Nuru, Yong and Hugo to have different types of scientists to not copy Varian's:

Hugo: He would be an engineer, physistic and mineralogist but bear in mind that he can't be perfect so I put more emphasis on his criminal background.

And be like the engineer version of Eugene Fitzherbert. He would be a contrast to him because of their career differences and how they’d affect personality. Eugene is a lone thief in the past and therefore Hugo would be like the 2.0 of him, he steals for himself and for profit. He’s basically self-employed!

Yong: He’s mainly got experience with pyrotechnics, he’d be good for defence.

Yong's got a unique background in that he’s very into a specific type of chemistry which is probably different from Varian's. And Yong does have a background in mechanics and is useful in equations and he's a firecracker. He probably knows a bit about temperature science, which might be helpful for a specific task.

Nuru: Nuru's science is astrology, an old kind of astronomy and meteorology, that also includes airflow on the planet. She could probably fill in the team's role as navigator of the group.

Nuru has been studying princess things a lot of her life a lot of that stemming from the fact that she does know other kingdoms and placements, so I can add in geography as a form of her interests and if I create her some kind of background and story a little less sheltered she’d be a good cultural consultant which in turn she’d need to know about neighbouring kingdoms to do politics well and she’d also probably be a good communicator, she’d be good at convincing people to do things for the group.

And we just leave Quirin behind like that in most fanworks.

Donella is totally down for overthrowing the rich and if she was a mob boss alongside being the royal engineer then she could make a lot of connections and identify different targets, just sayin’… I have this idea of her being raised by a librarian/scholar/academic type person so she’s raised with a strong appreciation for knowledge. Ulla’s main goal in getting to the Eternal Library was to find out more about magic so Donella’s goal could have something to do with the economic divide in Iingvar, trying to decrease the poverty rates or Maybe that’s why she takes in Hugo, perhaps there are other kids who work for her in exchange for a safe shelter.

Cus of this, Hugo is a double agent.

Everyone just forgets Cyrus once in a while, I personally think that he and Donella met when she did the iron trial and did something that he feels indebted to her, not sure exactly what but you don’t gain loyal followers for doing nothing. He was definitely a young Hugo’s training dummy/babysitter/jungle gym and as Hugo got older it was more trying to get a reaction out of him.

I mean, Cyrus is stoic and doesn’t talk much and stays completely silent.

As he’ll often lend an ear but whether he’s actually paying attention is up for debate. When he does talk! I reckon he gives great advice and he is probably a good and supportive person to vent to.

And why do Varian's relatives have to have the same features as him?

Buck teeth

Big eyes

Freckles

Literally, these are meant to make Varian unique.

Thoughts on Gatt's mission debrief to the Ben-Hassrath in Seheron. From World of Thedas, vol 2, page 241.

This will be long, so under the cut:

GATT ON HISSRAD

His state of mind? Am I supposed to say that he wasn't angry? Is that what I'm supposed to say so the reeducators can fill him full of qamek and send him off to break rocks with a hammer for the rest of his life? Because he was angry. Of course he was angry, after what the Tal-Vashoth did to those children. He's always been angry.

I remember the day he raided my master's ship and rescued me from that bastard. He butchered them all, and he wasn't calm as he did it. I'd have been terrified if he was. No, he fought with a righteous fury. He was every ounce of anger I'd been pushing down in my fear. He was rage, and I would have had it no other way.

He was angry when I finished my education and joined his team in Seheron. He'd smile when he greeted the locals, and he'd banter about the food at breakfast, but underneath it all, there was always the anger. How could he be anything else, after watching his friends die from poison or a knife in the back? Did you know his last commander became Tal-Vashoth? Of course you do. You've got records on everything, including the attitude I'm displaying right now that will doubtless come up as an area for improvement. Your people will tell me, and I'll sigh, and I'll take it, because I've seen the world outside the Qun, and while I might bang against the walls of this life, I'd rather be here than anywhere else.

So would Hissrad. The difference between him and me is that he's never known anything else. He grew up in this orderly world you all made, and it all makes sense to him, people make sense, and he thinks that if he does the right thing, then everything will work. He's been in Seheron for ten years trying to make everything work, telling himself that he's the tool you made him to be, doing the job he was meant to do. He hunted down and killed his old commander. He killed civilians working for the rebels. There are times I'm grateful for those Tevinter mages coming in to attack. At least Hissrad doesn't have to argue with himself after he kills them.

Now he killed the Tal-Vashoth who killed those children, and he broke himself doing it. He thinks it's his fault, that he failed to live up to the demands of the Qun. But we all know that isn't really true, is it? Seheron was a mess. We and Tevinter made certain of that. We grind ourselves down until we end up dead or turning Tal-Vashoth, and Hissrad would rather die than do that.

He's a good man. He believes in you. You owe him better than what you've done to him.

1. Bull's former commander went Tal-Vashoth?! I don't recall ever hearing that in the game. That's so freaking personal. It would've felt like a slap in the face. And Bull hunted him down and killed him for it.

2. Gatt repeating how angry Bull was when he met him. How he's ALWAYS been angry, as long as Gatt knew him. Gatt acts like this is the most natural reaction in the world for what he knows Bull's life in the last decade to have been. Yet the Bull we see in DAI is so laid back that this came as a surprise to me. We see the Bull that smiles and banters. But we meet Bull years post-Seheron and post-reeducation. Was it re-education that actually helped him (or at least redirected the underlying rage), or was it being finally free of Seheron, or that he had found a happier life being farther from the Qun with his Chargers? Or some combination of all three?

3. Gatt being angry on Bull's behalf. He's so loyal, so defensive and protective of his commander, at what Bull's leadership has forced him to put up with all these years, and at the thought that they would lobotomize him when Bull finally, predictably, broke under the strain of it all. When we meet Gatt in Demands of the Qun (nice callback to the mission there) he's angry that Bull would turn his back on the Qun after all Gatt had done to defend him, probably putting his neck out for him to Ben-Hassrath leadership. Bull's repeating the pattern of his former commander that he killed and it must rankle so bad

4. Being grateful when their enemy is Tevinter magisters because at least Bull doesn't have to argue against himself after killing them. That's a clear evil to them, and it's easier to kill that which you know is evil. But Bull is constantly at war with himself in Seheron, because maybe not everyone he'd had to kill deserved killing. He's been forced to be black and white in a world of gray, he's torn between what he's told is right and what he feels innately to be right. The warning signs of his PTSD were all there, but Bull kept pushing past them in order to be the best tool for the Qun he could be (and his commanders ignored it - even though part their job is to pull agents with soul sickness to reassign them and it's SO WORRYINGLY COMMON on Seheron, yet they kept him there because he got Results)

5. Bull helped save Gatt from a Tevinter slave ship. If this was mentioned in the game, I missed it. But it makes so much sense for how we know Bull's instinct is to protect the little guy, those in need of help, especially from Tevinters (see: Krem)

6. Gatt is so offended by the assumption that they would throw Bull away for being the most dedicated and perfect weapon he could be for as long as he could be, just because he couldn't take the trauma of Seheron for a minute longer. When it's stated that 3 years is the max Qunari could be stationed on Seheron without dying or burning out and Bull had been there for 10

7. "The difference between him and me is he's never known anything else." Bull BELIEVES in the Qun with his whole heart. It's neat and orderly, it makes sense, it Works. He has his role and he is Good At It. He likes things when they're clean cut and simple like that. No thinking needs to be involved. If he does his job right, things will work out. If he's just a good enough tool, if he just follows the rules. And anything that doesn't make sense, anything that doesn't work? It must be Bull's fault for not being Good Enough.

8. "Hissrad would rather die than become Tal-Vashoth." Maybe back then he would, because he saw no other option. No other escape. The only Tal-Vashoth he knew were monsters and he wouldn't ever let himself become one. But by the time we meet him, he's seen a glimpse of the life he could lead outside the Qun - of Tal-Vasoth who were just living peaceful lives in freedom

9. "You owe him better than what you've done to him. "The fact that Bull himself has never been able to face this truth about how the Qun used him up and threw him away, but Gatt didn't give a shit and stood up for his commander. Just... ow.
