For once, Y/N had the time (and budget) to clean up their dorm. Ramshackle was in terrible shape. Everyone knew that.
But very few knew just how bad the living conditions could get. The first night Y/N went to sleep at Ramshackle, they'd cried themselves to sleep. There was a constant draft, they only had the clothes on their body from when they fell into the world, there were cobwebs everywhere, and their allergies had a field day.
Eventually though, it did get somewhat better. After raising concerns about their ability to survive in such conditions to multiple of the school faculty, they were able to make a room for themselves (plus it had an ensuite bathroom), and before they knew it, they didn't feel so lost and lonely anymore.
However...
That was no excuse for the rest of their dorm to remain as unsightly and dilapidated as it was. After months of doing odd jobs anywhere and everywhere, raising fundraisers, demanding payment from the headmaster for all the things he'd make them do, and a bunch of other things, Y/N finally had enough money to freshen up the whole place (plus the spring break they wished to utilize was finally here).
Of course, it was to be a process that would take a week at bare minimum, as Ramshackle, though in terrible condition, was a rather large dorm in and of itself. The first thing Y/N would have to do was dust the whole place down (they really regretted not asking Malleus to help them with that part in particular). Then, they'd have to move the boxes and whatnot and throw out whatever wasn't necessary anymore.
Grim was sent to Heartslabyul for the day, and Riddle had assured Y/N that he would take the utmost care of the very unwilling feline.
Thus, the first day of dusting (and some other cleaning) had gone by, and all that was left to finish cleaning were the attic rooms. It was slow progress, but progress nonetheless. Besides, they'd just have to pull through for a few more hours, after which they'd be joined by their four favorite boys from Diasomnia to help them.
"There you guys are!" Y/N, as the large box they were carrying was lifted out of their arms and into another's. They met with Malleus' face, one that exuded joy, before meeting with the others' faces. Lilia had his signature boyish smirk and Silver, though tired, did sport a gentle grin. Sebek wasn't looking at them (why would he when Malleus had entrusted him with a box), but that wasn't something that bothered them.
"I apologize for arriving so late Darling," Malleus responded.
"Nah, it's fine. I was doing fine by myself."
"Now that we are here, you will be more than fine!"
Lilia snorted off to the side.
To reward everyone for all their hard work and to show their appreciation, Y/N made some cool lemonade (their own personal recipe) and brought it up to the attic, where they last left everyone.
Except there was no one there.
Figuring that they'd all gone out of the room to either get rid of or retrieve something, Y/N leaned to place the tray of lemonade on a resting box. But there was this feeling that kept nagging at them. It felt like someone was watching them. Holding the tray back closer to their chest, Y/N looked around the room, out the window, and out the room's door. There wasn't a soul in sight apart from them.
Trying to shrug the unmistakable feeling, they turned around, walking towards the box to set down the lemonade (that was starting to take a toll on their arms from carrying around for so long).
And that's when they heard it.
A chitter.
Everything happened so fast after that.
One second, they turn their head towards the clearly animal sound, intent on finding the source, when a black flash flew straight at their face. They could have sworn that the thing had red eyes, but that wasn't Y/N's priority, as they were currently falling in slow motion, backwards, with the lemonade tilting towards their direction.
Shit.
The crash seemed to bring everyone back to life, because soon after it occurred, Malleus, Silver, and Sebek were bolting it towards the source of it, only to find Y/N laying on the ground, drenched in some liquid.
That and Lilia sitting next to their face in his bat form, poking their face.
Malleus wasted no time in cradling Y/N under his arms and shaking them out of whatever shock they were in. "Darling? Darling! Wake up!"
Sebek leaned on the other side of Y/N with a towel and started helping them dry off.
"I just saw a demon."
Silver couldn't help but let out a giggle, hearing the Ramshackle prefect say such a thing.
"That was just Father."
Confused, Y/N looked at him for an explanation. Yet, there was none. Silver simply pointed behind them, and that's when they noticed the bat. Something about it seemed eerily familiar, and that's when it hit them.
Red eyes.
Yeah, they were so going to kill Lilia.

Hauntober Prompt 15: Moonlight
Amaizing
“Dude, I’m pretty sure we’re lost, we can just take a shortcut and leave Trev.” Alfredo sighed as he followed his friend around a corner. Dried up stalks crunching under their shoes as they continued forward.
“Listen, I know what I’m doing Alfredo, I’m not going to let a corn maze beat me.” Trevor declared, trying to pump up his companion into finishing their journey. “Plus we paid fifteen dollars to enter this maze and get a t-shirt at the end and I’m not-I mean we’re not leaving here empty handed.”
Alfredo just groaned in response and threw up his hands in defeat, “Fine, but you’re buying me dessert from Gourdough’s if you can’t find the exit.”
“Deal!” Trevor agreed, sticking out his hand for the two to shake on it. Once done the pair marched forward along the winding paths, Trevor leading the way and choosing which turns to take. Fallen corn stalks crunched under their shoes as they walked while the moon above helped illuminate their route. Sounds of laughter and music grew louder as the two neared the unseen exit.
“I’ll be damned, you didn’t lead us in circles for a few hours like I thought you would.” Alfredo chuckled, clapping his friend on the back as they saw the two torches marking the exit farther off.
“Oh ye of little faith, I told you we would find the exit…” Trevor started as they rounded the corner and the path ended with a wall of stalks in the way. “Well, that’s not ideal.”
“Alright, instead of backtracking for thirty minutes, why don’t we just slip through these stalks to the path just on the other side. I can barely see it with the moonlight, but I know it’s right there.” Alfredo suggested, just wanting to eat some food at this point.
Trevor stopped for a moment and pondered their options. They could just take a shortcut and get their shirts and then some food or they could just backtrack and spend another hour lost in a corn maze, one definitely sounded more appealing than the other. “Yup, let’s just cut through the corn and leave. I’m tired, cold, and hungry.” He gave in, ready to finish the maze.
Alfredo raised a finger to his mouth motioning for his friend to be quiet as they huddled close, “More than likely they’ll have someone at the exit waiting for people to leave so they can get their shirt, so we need to be silent or else we might forfeit our chance for free stuff. We’ve spent too much time to be walking away from here empty handed.” He explained as Trevor nodded in agreement thoughtfully.
The two silently ventured into the corn carefully and treaded lightly over the fallen stalks, letting the moonlight guide their way through to the other side. Emerging uncaught they both cheered and raced down the path, rushing out of the exit towards the stationed attendant, stopping to catch their breath as the worker chuckled at the pair.
“Y’all know you were the last pair inside, right? Wasn’t sure when you’d turn up or if we would have to send in a rescue team.” He explained as he handed over the shirts.
“We were going to take as long as we needed to get these shirts.” Trevor explained as he shoved his new shirt inside his bag.
“You know you didn’t have to finish the maze to get it right? It came with your ticket…” The worker trailed off.

A Twinkle In The Void [Hauntober #9]
-----------------------------------------------
Hauntober Day 9: Stars
Characters: Eimir, Felicity
Words: 789
-----------------------------------------------
Eimir had long since forgotten what realm she had come from, or why she had been imprisoned in the void. Bits and pieces of fractured memories would return to her in sparatice patterns, each one hung from a string just out of reach. Taunting her with false promises of the life she once had.
If she sat long enough she could recall many things, the feeling of wet clothes hanging from her frail bones, why were they wet? Hands running through her hair, who’s? Stars.. The memories of stars had always been the worst, always given her the least to hold onto. She thinks she may have gazed upon them once, naming patterns with two others.
Who were the others? She did not have an answer for that. No matter how long she had thought, the faces and voices of the two she gazed with remained a mystery. She would often catch a glimpse of strawberry hair tangled with flowers, or arms made from bark, but never anything more. No matter how long she forced herself to think of them, she could never create an image of them within her mind.
And so eventually she stopped. Stopped thinking of the stars. Of her friends, of her home. It had become far too painful to think of anything at all, so she simply didn’t. Not thinking was far easier, far safer. Soon she simply let time move around her, ageing her and making the memories she was once desperate to hold onto slip from her mind. She didn’t know how long she had laid in the same spot before she was stirred.
The sound of screaming was slow to register, even slower to make her react. Staggering to her legs which had long since numbed from lack of use, she scanned her void. Empty. No one else is here. She had thought, the screaming becoming a distant memory in her already overflowing reservar as she laid down once more.
But the screaming hadn’t stopped, and as the hours drew on it turned from the uncoordinated shrieks of a wounded animal into screams more akin to those of humanoids, and as they changed Eimir couldn’t help but listen.
“Joe!”
The voice called out, warily at first as though testing that the void would not leap out and devour them whole at their intrusion. Realising that it would not, the voice became louder, more frantic, an animal replicating humanoid speech as they searched for something. Someone.
It had been longer than Eimir could remember since she had heard someone speak, let alone another aside from herself. So it only made sense that she did not recognize what the person was saying at first, but as time moved on the voice continued gears turned and a thought formed in a brain collecting cobwebs.
They are calling a name. She thought. But who? Perhaps it was one of the people from her memories, one of the people she hadn’t been allowed to remember. No, it had been far too long for them to still be alive.
“Joe!”
They were closer, their footsteps echoing across the barrenness of nowhere. And they listened. They listened for what may have been years, the voice repeating the same name over and over, echoing across the emptiness and into Eimirs ears. Eventually she blocked it out, as she had done with all things before it.
Then she felt something touch her. She had not heard the voice approach, had not felt them inch towards her, had not noticed as they reached out to touch her face. Her body leapt from its position, eyes flying open as she turned to look at the voice, now a person in front of her.
They were hunched where she had been laying, their dark pigmented hand still outstretched. Slowly, they retracted it and brought it to their nightgown, their green eyes following Eimir with care as she backed away further. Where do I go? She thought, knowing it wasn’t likely she could run considering the humanoid elf could clearly see them in the unobstructed abyss.
“Hello, I’m Felicity.”
Felicity. Eimir turned the name over in her head, stopping her attempt to run and hide as she stared into the humanoid's eyes. Her eyes reminded her of someone, but who? She pondered it for a moment, the humanoid staying where they had begun with a patient smile before Eimir opened her mouth.
A cough escaped, as though her lungs were clearing dust from her vocal cords after years of silence. She coughed once more, and the humanoid was beside her patting her back and asking such strange questions. It took a moment for Eimir to regain herself before she spoke.
“Have you seen stars?”
-----------------------------------------------
Feed back and helpful critque is welcome! I’m using Hauntober as an oppertunity to branch out my writing style, for this oneshot I decided to practice writing inner termoil and dialogue. It got a bit sloppy near the end due to a headache, apologies.

"Why is there an owl in our bedroom?" Leona asked.
"Oh hey, welcome back!" You grin. "Did you forget what today is?"
Leona was confused. What was today? Definitely not either of their birthdays, and most certainly not any of their anniversaries-
Sighing, you explain. "Remember how I said my friend's going on a vacation with her boyfriend?" Leona just stared at you, causing you to roll your eyes at his forgetfullness for any information that he deemed unworthy for his brain. "Well, if you remembered, which you don't, she also has a pet owl and she asked if I could take care of him. She dropped him off just around an hour or so ago.
Leona sighed.
"Do you even know how to take care of an owl?"
"Why are you so sure that I can't?"
"I never said that."
"You thought it."
Yeah, no. Leona had enough of this already. That creepy ass bird was starting to get on his nerves, what with him staring at him as though he were reading deep into his soul.
"Whatever, just don't end up killing the damn thing."
"See! You don't think I can take care of an animal!" You screamed back at his retreating figure, determined to prove him wrong.
Luckily Ares (your friend's pet owl), was a very peaceful and calm being, very unlike his name. He ate when he was supposed to, didn't peck or fight you whenever you came by in his near vicinity, and even wanted scratches every now and then.
Very low maintenance.
Maybe you should get yourself an owl...
Leona on the other hand, still didn't like the bird, and was more than happy when your friend came back with her boyfriend to pick up the thing.
"So?" You start.
"So what?" Leona retorted.
"Do you admit I can take perfectly good care of animals?" You crossed your arms, smirking, content with yourself for having won.
"Owls aren't even that difficult to take care of." Leona replied, equally smug with his banter. "You shouldn't let all that get in your head."
You stared at Leona, whose smirk only grew at your silence.
"Actually, I'm rather good at taking care of animals. You know how I know?
"How?" Leona entertained you.
"I take care of your lazy cat ass everyday!" With a happy little smile, you sauntered off, leaving behind a very fuming and overgrown feline behind.

Hauntober Prompt 14: Haunted
Fresh Meat
Fog swirled through the night sky as laughter and screams pierced the air. Flickering lights and the sound of rushed footsteps set the tone as two friends waited somewhat patiently in line.
“So how long is this going to take cause I want to see the live performance at the front of the park.” Blaine whined trying to gauge how much longer their wait would take.
“Well at the rate we’re going it should take maybe fifteen more minutes?” Griff replied with a shrug, estimating how many people were left in front of them.
Letting out an exasperated sigh in response Blaine looked around trying to distract himself from the wait.
“You know I suggested we just buy line skip tickets, but you said waiting in line is all part of the haunted house experience.” Griff replied in response to Blaine's over the top reactions.
“I know I know, I just forget how long it can take and I get impatient.” Blaine pouts. “Let’s just buy the line skip tickets after we go through Club Blood and see the performance.”
Griff nods in agreement. “This is themed after True Blood and Blade, right? I mean with a name like that it has to be.”
“I would think so? I’m expecting to at least see several vampires and several gallons of fake blood in there otherwise I want my ticket refunded.” Blaine threatens jokingly as they watch a few people run out of the exit screaming followed by more people laughing behind them. “So when we go in you’re going to protect me, right?”
“Yes Blaine I will protect you from the big scary fake vampire actor who isn’t going to kill you.” Griff teased. “However, if you push me down to run away or anything like that you will be going in first to every maze for the rest of the night, got it?”
‘Yeah yeah, you probably won’t have to worry about that.” Blaine tried to respond assuringly.
“If you make it through the haunted house I will consider buying some boardwalk fries for you. I’ll be buying some anyway, but I might get some for you too.” Griff offered, trying to get Blaine's mind off of being scared.
“That’s some good motivation right there, old bay seasoning on freshly fried fries is every amusement park's greatest delicacy. Plus it’s my cheat day so I can indulge a little bit tonight.” Blaine salivated as he imagined the fries all coated in seasoning.
They chatted as the line slowly progressed, the entrance getting closer and closer as the sounds and screams muffled behind the door got louder.
Moving in front of Blaine, Griff felt hands grab onto the back of their jacket as Blaine huddled in close and hid his face preparing to go inside as the door swung open for them. “Just try not to punch any of the scare actors in the throat or else we’ll be kicked out of the park.” Griff warned.
“I’ll try my best, but I’m not making any promises.” Blaine replied.

Experience All Things Paranormal During Virginia City’s “Hauntober”
Experience All Things Paranormal During Virginia City’s “Hauntober”
Whatever is in the recipe for a haunted town, Virginia City, Nevada, has it in spades. The historic mining town, located just 25 minutes from Reno, was once a booming metropolis, responsible for millions of dollars in silver and gold ore and the largest city between Denver and San Francisco. Perhaps there’s something about these hills those miners didn’t want to leave behind, because tales of…
