Harry Styles is a Mermaid

Disclaimer: I am sure I’m not the first to report and share these links and images. I thought people would find this interesting, so I’m sharing my foray down this rabbit hole. I’d welcome any additional links or thoughts related to Mermaids and the LGBTQ community.

In November 2014, Harry Styles had the image of a mermaid tattooed on his left forearm. The bare-chested siren joined multitudes of other nautical themed tattoos that litter his body. 

A few days after the new tat appeared, he responded to a question at a meet and greet. 

“I am a Mermaid,” he said. 

I started the research on this post when I saw the gif with his quote about being a mermaid. Rest below the cut.

I’m not going to tell you why he said he’s a mermaid. I don’t know what it means to him. I have no idea. Maybe he simply likes mermaids. Maybe he feels like it matches the themes of his and Louis’ other nautical tattoos. I can't pretend to know.

“Mermaid” as a theme, though, has a decades long association with the LGBTQ community. And I think that’s interesting in light of the imagery that Harry himself has shared and seems to connect to.

Like, that time he wore a shirt with a famous line from The Little Mermaid.

Or in 2019, when he dressed as Ariel for a Saturday Night Live photoshoot.

I’ve seen the Little Mermaid probably dozens of times. My child and I watched it a lot when she was growing up. And while I always knew it was an allegory for being different, I didn’t think about the deeper meaning as it relates to the LGBTQ community until more recently.

According to this article from the Smithsonian, 

The central story of The Little Mermaid is, of course, 16-year-old Ariel’s identity crisis. She feels constrained by her patriarchal mer-society and senses she doesn’t belong. She yearns for another world, apart from her own, where she can be free from the limits of her rigid culture and conservative family. Her body is under the water, but her heart and mind are on land with people. She leads a double life. She is, essentially, “in the closet” (as symbolized by her “cavern”—or closet—of human artifacts, where the character-building song “Part of Your World” takes place).

The Disney version was written by writer-producer-lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken. 

The character of Ursula, though, is the real LGBTQ icon. “Conceived by Ashman, Ursula is based on the famous cross-dressing performer Divine, who was associated with the openly gay filmmaker John Waters. As scholar Laura Sells explained in a 1995 anthology of essays, Ursula’s “Poor Unfortunate Souls” song is essentially a drag show instructing the naive mermaid on how to attract Prince Eric (who is conspicuously uninterested in Ariel and most content at sea with his all-male crew and manservant Grimsby). “In Ursula’s drag scene,” Sells wrote, “Ariel learns that gender is performance; Ursula doesn’t simply symbolize woman, she performs woman.” (same source as above).

A gay man in 1980s America, Ashman had personal experience with the culture wars over “family values” and gay rights. The “Reagan Revolution” marked the arrival of the long-brewing marriage of the Republican Party with conservative Christians and included a platform that was unfriendly to gay rights, to say the least. President Reagan ignored the AIDS epidemic that swept the nation (refusing to appropriate any federal funds for research or treatment), and Republicans in general claimed the “gay plague” was God’s punishment for homosexuality. Ashman saw the film as an opportunity to advance a social message through the medium of “family entertainment.” The last thing Americans would expect from Disney was a critique of patriarchy, but sure enough, Ashman’s The Little Mermaid is a gutsy film about gender and identity—a far cry from the staid Disney catalog. Anyone who was around in 2015 knows about RBB/SBB. But if you didn’t, the Rainbow Bears (RBB/SBB, largely assumed to be created and curated by Harry and Louis) mentioned Divine on December 1, 2015. Just after they posted about her, Harry tweeted a lyric that alluded to Divine. See below.

There was a lot of speculation about Harry being potentially cast as Prince Eric in a live action version of the Little Mermaid. I’m not sure how serious those rumors were, but I can imagine based on all of this research, that he might have found the Prince wasn’t the character he related to most.

To go even further down the rabbit hole, go all the way back to the original story. The Hans Christian Anderson version has a tragic ending, that doesn’t end with the mermaid happily ever with the prince. There is some speculation that the story was an allegory for an unrequited love that Anderson had toward a straight acquaintance.

I also want to point out that Mermaids is a UK based charity organization, that “supports transgender, nonbinary and gender-diverse children and young people until their 20th birthday, as well as their families and professionals involved in their care.” About Mermaids - Mermaids (mermaidsuk.org.uk) https://mermaidsuk.org.uk/about-us/

All of this could be coincident to the true purpose behind what Harry’s tattoo means to him. We will likely never know its exact meaning to him. 

But as time passes, and we see Harry waving various LGBTQ flags and hinting at being in the community himself, I think it might bear remembering that he said he WAS a mermaid. And I think that’s beautiful, Harry.

But in a way, i don’t imagine the weeknd’s, harry’s (or more) fans hating her because she’s such an icon so abel and harry having a crush on her isn’t weird because they’re two of many, many people. it’s sort of a natural thing for people and celebrities to have her as a celebrity crush.

to answer your questions:

1. yes, she was popular as a teenager. sure she was a spy kid, was Sam in A Cinderella Story, voiced Violet in The Incredibles when she was 13 to 16, but her breakthrough came from her role in V for Vendetta when she was only 17 and established her place as an actress with potential and range.

Following that were her roles as a lead in The Devil Wears Prada and Atonement, both iconic, must-watch movies. so she was pretty established then.

she was media trained for sure but she’s never been a wild teenager and i imagine it was her mom and theatre friends who always kept her grounded and in check. i think she’s mostly always been an introvert as well.

2. no, i don’t imagine so. there were times when she showed that questions shocked her (that were either sexist or sexual) and at first, when she was younger, she’d get very nervous but as she grew, she put people in their places so elegantly even though it’d humiliate them and surely give them a bad rep.

3. literally all of these. she’s friends with rihanna and i imagine her modelling for fenty beauty one time (maybe for fenty’s red lipstick) where it was a shoot of her and rihanna. she has such a good, unproblematic reputation among these people so they can’t really help but love her. whenever she sees beyoncé, they’re always so excited and always talk and people have a field day over “the two queens of both industry casually talking”.

omg imagine she attended a world cup match years ago and neymar was a nervous wreck and then later said in an interview that he was about to die when she greeted him.

4. i think we once said we imagine her being in The Simpsons and was in a Scooby Doo episode!

5. so many people, most recent being Drake who was presenting an award on stage and was like “Y/N Y/L/N, you’re looking so beautiful tonight” and she just smiled and wasn’t at all fazed or reactive and people all were like “there’s no way drake just tried to shoot his shot at y/n y/l/n who’s not only out of his league but is also married”

My headcanon for Brazilian wand magic in Harry Potter

So this is  my headcanon about Brazilian wand magic. Since the creatures aren’t well-known outside Brazil, I have the info on the wand core then a blurb about the real-life folklore behind it. 

I’m still developing my headcanon for the wood part of the wands; I’ll post about it once it’s finished.

Unlike European wand cores, which can cause harm to the “donor” (such as in the case of dragons, for example), Brazilian wand cores are either bartered for or freely given. The only exceptions are in the case of the Mula and Cuca, although care is made that the extraction not permanently injure or debilitate the “donor”. Though heartstrings could also be used, their use is traditionally (and more recently, legally) forbidden. 

We know from some wands crafted by early European arrivals that heartstrings of Brazilian magical creatures make exceedingly powerful wands, however the practice was considered taboo by Indigenous Brazilian magical beings (sorcerers included), as it is considered wasteful and needless when less harmful methods satisfy the wandmaker’s needs. As such, uses of heartstrings were not tolerated and severely dealt with, leading European-Brazilians to cease such practices fairly early on.

Due to the less hostile nature of how wand cores are collected in Brazil, Brazilian wandmakers enjoy a much wider array of wand core options. It has been theorized that Brazil’s propensity for strong wands may be linked to the wand cores being freely given.

It is also worth noting that Brazilian magic performed by Indigenous sorcerers uses a form of wandless magic which may or may not use objects infused with what Europeans would recognize as wand cores and wood to help focus and channel the magic. 

Wand Cores

NOTE: All of the following creatures are extremely intelligent and/or dangerous and can be deadly if not approached properly. 

Iaras, Sacis, Curupiras and Caiporas are ranked as dangerous in that they deserve respect, not that they are overly violent per se, and are only classified as beasts at their own request (much like centaurs and sirens in Europe, though Curupiras participate much more actively in human governmental institutions by comparison).

Iara hair strand or scale - Powerful, particularly good at charms, not half bad at offensive spells either. Slightly temperamental. Not overly loyal but not prone to accepting a new owner either.

About Iaras: Overall very similar to European sirens and mermaids, especially since the influence of European culture to the myth. They have green hair and live in rivers rather than the ocean, and sit on rocks singing and brushing their hair to lure men to the depths of the river. 

Saci Pererê hair strand - Temperamental and unpredictable. Extremely good at transfiguration and spells having to do with deceit or travel (apparition, concealment of things, etc). May work well for those other than its owner, but it’s a bit of a Russian roulette gamble, as the consequences of a claimed wand with a Saci hair core rejecting a new user can be severe and… unfortunate.

About Sacis - Trickster figures and universally recognized by Brazilians as the icon of Brazilian folklore and culture. They look like a young one-legged black boy who wears a red cap. Extremely powerful, they’re generally benevolent in the sense that they don’t intentionally seek out to hurt people, but as their chief concern is amusing themselves, they can often pull tricks that are harmful without intending harm (e.g. making the milk go sour, thus causing someone to go hungry). They travel by way of dust clouds  and mini dust tornados. Kind of vaguely similar to a mix of a genie and a selkie,as you can capture them, take away their cap, and they’ll have to do your bidding.

Curupira tooth - Extremely good for protective spells (both defensive and offensive), very loyal to its owner. Least likely to accept the use of dark magic. Second rarest wand core.

About Curupiras: The Brazilian icon for environmentalism, they look like a boy with his feet on backwards and hair made of fire (I’m pretty sure that it was originally intended to be a metaphor for “he’s a ginger”, because gingers are so rare in Brazil I legit thought the Wealeys’ hair colour was like an anime-style thing where they have funky hair ‘cause they’re magic). 

They are harmless and neutral when you need to take from the forest for survival, but utterly terrifying forces to be dealt with when you take beyond your fair share. They’re basically like immensely powerful forest spirits that protect the balance of nature. You really really don’t wanna piss one off.

Caipora hair strand - Particularly good at hexes, jinxes and offensive spells at large. Not opposed to dark magic. Due to the temperamental nature of the core, its loyalty ranges from fairly flexible to fiercely loyal based on the individual wand (loyal wands also happen to be excellent at defensive spells as they are fiercely protective of their owner). While it is not entirely known why the wand loyalty can vary so wildly from wand to wand, recent studies suggest it may be due to a mix of the core-wood personality combination as well as the personality of the individual donor.

About Caiporas: Similar to the Curupira, they’re humanoid forest beings of extreme power. While Curupiras are neutral unless angered, Caiporas are often portrayed as more malevolent in nature. 

Cuca scale or hair strand - Particularly good at hexes, jinxes, and offensive spells at large. Most prone to accept dark magic use. 

About Cucas: The  Cuca is  basically the Brazilian boogie man. Usually portrayed as an alligator with hair on its head. Cucas are always female.

Mboiúna scale - The rarest and most powerful of wand cores. In this sense it is not unlike phoenix feathers used throughout Eurasia, although that’s where the similarities end. 

Mboiúna cores are rare mostly because few are willing (or able) to approach these gigantic water snakes to collect a scale or two (or rather, to approach them and survive), as well as because they are also prized ingredients for potions and certain kinds of Indigenous wandless magic. Full-grown male mboiúna are the size of a female basilisk, while females can easily grow to twice the size of males.

About Mboiúnas: Sort of the Amazonian equivalent of a sea serpent/monster, their name literally means “black snake”. They’re often blamed for capsizing boats and eating fishermen. Likely sprung from the fact that some Brazilian water snakes can (and do) capsize boats and attack people. In fact, a few years ago a corrupt politician was eaten by such a snake. Like, for realsies. There’s photos and everything.

Unpacking the deep, cultural history of the famed beauty product, Red Lipstick: an Ode to a Beauty Icon explores the lasting legacy of the legendary shade. Not just stories and anecdotes, but also vibrant, inspiring images from fine art, photography, beauty and fashion editorials and advertisements fill the tome—not to mention the style icons who wore it well.

Featured in Red Lipstick are a series of hall of famers. Among them, punk rock stars Debbie Harry and Siouxsie Sioux, as well as pop music idols including Madonna and Rihanna. One account involves wearing red as a political move: "Women during World War II wore it as an act of defiance because Hitler famously didn’t like red lipstick,” she says. Another highlight? The broad, societal spectrum: “Over the many centuries of red lipstick, prostitutes have worn it,” Felder shares. 

"Actresses wore it in an era when to be an actress was not something that was seen as a respectable profession. Also breakthrough. It’s an exploration of the aftermath of trauma when you’re in a new environment and kind of realising and accepting that the shit you’ve been through is fucked up and not everything is like that and learning to love yourself. A lot of things the main character thinks and feels are thoughts and feelings I’ve had, so I’m kinda processing my shit via Mari. Posting this feels like opening up my own ribcage and going “look at all my heart pls don’t hurt it”, then being afraid it’ll get hurt yet still leaving it unprotected bc I want to share it with others. That’s also why it’s hard to write sometimes lmao. Wow that was long sorry.

How do you choose your titles:

If one doesn’t just come to me, I use song lyrics. Even breakthrough comes from the song Breakthrough by Jake Edwards.

Do you outline?

I DON’T UNDERSTAND PEOPLE WHO DON’T!!!! If I don’t outline, I write 1000 words of Oscar and Mari making paella and kissing and don’t get to anything I wanted to address the chapter.

Your on Jimmy Fallen with your Husband Harry playing loaded questions. But what Jimmy doesn’t know, is that you have a very special announcement.

“So (Y/N) and I were talking a few days ago about your new single, being recently married to Mr Styles, and then asked you some questions I would never be able to ask you on tv. But then I said is there anyway we could actually ask these questions and you had a great comeback and what was that” Jimmy Fallen asked. And (Y/N) replied giggling “yes I do remember, and I said I will tell you the answers as long as people don’t know the question”

“So that brings us to a new game called Loaded Questions, But first before we start we need an opponent, so please welcome your husband, Mr Harry Styles” jimmy yelled.

(Y/N) turns around to see her Husband Harry walking out from behind the curtain dressed, head to toe in another custom made Black Alexander McQueen suit and his iconic Gucci rainbow boots. He walked over to (Y/N) and gives her a quick peck on the lips and then walks over to Jimmy, and shakes his hand “good to see you again” Harry sais.

“Alrighty now that we have Mr Styles with us here’s how it works Harry and (Y/N) are going to take turns choosing a shot. Under each shot is a coster which has a personal question written on it. Neither has (Y/N) or Harry seen these questions. You will read the question silently, but give your answer out loud, then you will choose whether to share what the question was or to take the shot and keep it a secret, does that make sense” Jimmy then finally said.

“Okay, that makes sense I am shitting myself” (Y/N) explains and looks at Harry who is looking awfully pale.

“Okay tonight America is going to get all the answers just not three questions. So (Y/N) your up first”

(Y/N) reaches down to slide the shot of the coaster and keeps the coaster close to her body and reads the question in her mind.

“By the way this shot it called Satan’s Testicles”

“Ariana Grande” (Y/N) sais and looks straight at Harry who is giving her a weird cock eye look then exclaims “what”

“So I don’t want you to know the question so I drink the shot” (Y/n) asks and jimmy replies “yeah or you can let us know the question ”

So (Y/N) drinks the shot.

“Now it’s Harry’s turn, your turn to read the question to your self and say the answer if you don’t want to say the question you have to drink the shot” jimmy trust to Harry and said.

Harry just nods and pick up the coaster. “$6,000” is all Harry sais and straight away pick up the shot and tips it done his throat without another word.

“Okay my turn” (Y/N) moves the shot glass of the coast and reads the question

“This shot is called Plain Old Poison” and she looks at the question and her eyes goes wide she looks directly at Harry and said “oh my gosh, umm sometimes 3 sometimes 7 times a week” Harry just like straight at (Y/N) and gives her a sly smile and then nods his head.

Jimmy then gets the giggles and try’s to think what the question would be he then asked “so you say sometime 3, sometimes 7 times a week, but does Harry want more then 3 to 7 times a week” “I didn’t say anything about Harry” She exclaims and points a finger at Jimmy, all the while Harry is just resting his hands on the tables laughing and finally said “I’m happy with whatever”

So (Y/N) drinks the shot again

So it’s Harrys turn once again, and he picks the coaster up and studies it for a moment before saying “quiet a few actually, not many people will believe me tho, and as you are all nosey the question is. Do you have any selfies on your phone and yes I have quite a few”

As a siren goes off in the studio Jimmy announces “Okay this is the final loaded question, you both will look at the question and both say your answer out load at the same time, you will then both decide weather you want to answer or take the shot”

(Y/N) and Harry both move to the left side of the table and Harry instantly wraps his arm around (Y/N)s waist and picks up the coaster so they can read it together. “Okay so this shot is called Jello From The Other Side” Harry sais.

As they both look at the question they both nod and say the answer at the same time.

“YES OCTOBER”

“Do you wanna do the shot or tell everyone what the question is” Harry asks. “It’s about time everyone knows I think”

(Y/N) nods and said the Question “Is (Y/N) Pregnant? So yes I am and we are expecting a little girl in October this year”.

The audience goes wild and Jimmy gives out congratulations.

My thoughts on the little mermaid casting

I am a huge fan of Chloe x Halle! They can sing their butts off and they have a unique style. I always favoured Halles voice because she has the soft, airy, jazzy type voice. She sounds like a siren sometimes and it's ironic because she's now playing Ariel, and mermaids are known to be sirens.

In terms of personality and vocals I know Halle will MURDER this role. She has acted on Grown ish but I know she can act well.

My only concern is that I wish black people didn't have to settle to play white characters, just because of the lack of black characters in cartoons. I would have loved it if Halle got the chance to play a fictional fanstay princess who's black, but in Hollywood there is a HUGE gap of animated characters who are black.

Tiana being the ONLY black princess is something. I would have loved if Halle was Tiana but it will take years before we get a remake for princess and the frog.

I understand why fans are upset. If you are a true fan of the little mermaid and saw Ariel as the staple of your childhood, know your feelings are valid.

Ariel is iconic for her long red hair, and we have seen how she's supposed to look.

Thats the issue.

A actress closer to the look of Ariel should have been done for this movie.

If the little mermaid was a book and we got descriptions of how Ariel looked, any race could play her without a uproar. Hermonie in Harry potter was described with brown hair but J K never described what race she was. Therefore though hermonie was white in the live action movies, she could be any race due to the descriptions in the book.

With the little mermaid we've seen the animated movie years ago, so we know how Ariel looks. She was a white red haired mermaid. We've had years with knowing that iconic look so I know it will be hard for die hard fans to adjust to the change.

But Halle is Ariel. Instead of hating her try to get to know her as a person and you will know she's a great lovely young woman. She's a intellectual, but calm and witty. She's very close to Ariels personality.

You die hard fans can always watch the 1992 movie over again if you want, but if you truly love the movie you would support it in anyway.

To those who aren't little mermaid fans and are just looking at the surface, stop being racist.

White actors have whitewashed in many movies like:

Why not any other race but a black women?

A fraction of the hate for Halle playing Ariel is from racist people.

Their opinions aren't valid here only the fans of Disney and the little mermaid stans.

Melissa is good as Ursula. She can act the role out I can see her doing it well.

But with Halle people don't want her playing Ariel because shes black.

I will support Halle regardless of my opinion that the casting directors should have chosen a white actress for the role (since we have a visual of how Ariel is suppost to look)

Halle has everything else in check for the role besides her looks, but I believe she will deliver and I'm happy shes getting support.
