TS: I loved seeing one of my favourite images of yours in the book – one of Harry Styles for Another Man. I think it was the first issue of Another Man I wrote for, so it’s very special to me. What do you remember about that shoot?
AM: I mean, he’s a really lovely person. The reason why I like to take people back to where they’re from is because it gives them enthusiasm towards the project. It’s why I constantly go back to where I’m from. It generates an excitement and an enthusiasm for the pictures, for the photo shoot and for showing a different part of themselves; what they were like before they became this big person. The reason why we sat him on that bin was because he used to sit on that bin during break time or lunchtime. There was a moment when we were taking a picture at Holmes Chapel train station, and one of his old school friends got off the train and [Harry] started talking to him like he’d seen him at school last week. It was quite sweet to watch. Harry was no longer Harry, he was just a schoolmate.
TS: I guess you regress when you go home. So was there a sense of photographing him in his truest form?
AM: Yeah, there is that. It’s sort of a combination of both – there is who he is. But like, it’s nice to take him back.
that little article gemma wrote about harry makes me feel so much maybe its cause i have a little brother too and i can see myself in the things she says as an older sister but it also just reminds you that he's just a person often when hes written about he feels larger than life but hearing things about how he was as a child or in school its like oh he's just a person. another man is probably my fave magazine he's ever done
I totally agree with you! Gemma's writing is so real and heart warming. When you read it you can just see Harry, not this huge popstar but just Harry, this little boy who has such a kind heart, likes to watch romcoms with his sister and can't wait to give his mum a surprise present. Also another reason I think I love it so much is because I admire his relationship with his family so much and it's so beautiful to have the opportunity to see him through the eyes of the people that love him deeply.
does Oliver know he's reaching jack's certified babygirl status. does he know what kind of an achievement this is. he should be crying and throwing up with gratitude rn
i hate these creep pictures but i saw this one and i couldn’t help but think like this is a scene in a rom com where he like picks you up from a party or whatever 😭 he’s silently listening to you ramble bc he’s secretly in love with you and shit
What do you think is causing his midlife crisis? It's just that that kinda thing usually happens when a person becomes irrelevant, you know? Regardless of how good of a person he is, he's certainly not irrelevant. If I had to guess I'd say he got really spooked during quarantine because he realized how empty he is without his celebrity status and while he's always been ambitious and egotistical, his behavior the past 2 years has been so incredibly desperate and off putting. It just feels like a person trying to grab everything they can before having their plate taken away.
I don't know if he's quite there in a midlife crisis. His music and his tour are still very successful. If those start to fade then...
Harry to me has felt incredibly desperate since the start of his solo career. His first album, the image he tried to project, all of that felt very desperate to me at the time. Take me seriously! I am a grown up! I am so talented! I am basically like Prince or Bowie or Beyonce without the effort or work!
But I think with this album and these movies, he truly just wants it all. He wants that Oscar so so bad. He wants an EGOT. And the thing is, his career relies on his youthful looks. That is a reality. With him aging like this, you're going to see more and more fans start to drift away. He's meant to be doing five Eternals movies, but that would take him into his 30s. Imagine how bad he'd look then. So he's got to try and pack as much as he can in now, so that he can sort of "retire" and pretend he doesn't care about being less famous in a few years. Think of Justin Timberlake now vs in his 20s. Or any boybander in their prime vs their later years.
Perhaps there's a part of him that understands he's an imposter. That everything he's earned is undeserved. That his whole career is a house of cards. But that was all from inside his head, before the last few weeks when the internet seemed to unite to say that's exactly what his career and fame is. A house of cards. He's just not that good. He's laughable in many regards. I think if his movies don't sell as well as they need then we'll see a real sort of desperation in him. And an anger. When he doesn't get what he wants, he starts being angry, there's a petty sort of anger in him and I think we'll see that more in some way.
