B5 S03E19 Grey 17 Is Missing previous episode - table of contents

I'm not sure how this episode is going to go, because prior to this I have always watched B5 high (I started this saga while taking hydrocodone pain meds I was allergic to post-wisdom teeth removal) or sober (which I quickly stopped doing, because the recaps were a dry and stale recounting of the plot in a most unpleasant way), but now I can't have THC for awhile (pre-op instructions for what will hopefully be my last surgery for awhile) and so I am experimenting with liveblogging while tipsy. 

So far I thimk that tipsy b5 blogging may be the era of run-on sentences. play video.

I did not expect Level 17 Grey to come up. Where is the missing number if Grey 17 is missing, it goes to Grey 30, but there's only 29 levels? This mystery is deeper than I expected it to be!

 The missing floor, once Garibaldi rules-lawyers the lift into stopping there, is trashed. And it says Grey 17 in a different place than the other floors. AND there's what looks like a technical diagram for a trash can where the other floors have their designation signs. Idk what this means, but it's a data point!!

YES PLEASE. This is good plot, and I like it. 

Delenn is really beautiful this episode. I think the red/blue rich, saturated colors particularly flatter her. But she is always unfairly pretty and generally lickable.

Delenn's mother entered the sisters of valeria soon after Delenn was born, and she's only seen her twice. TWICE. And Delenn's father died ten years ago. She does not mention siblings. How old is Delenn? If it isn't a plot-relevant spoiler, please let me know if you know it. 

Her thoughts on missing her father are both relatable and wistful. It made me thoughtful about the same topic. 

Jeremiah says the reason the Minbari almost defeated the humans in the war was because the Minbari are closer to the truth than humans. AND we have learned that the people on Grey Level 17 is because they hacked the system and detached themselves from the rest of B5. Isolationists being isolationist on a tiny little level of a space station is illogical and funny and very, very human.

The Minbari offended by Delenn running the Rangers is called Neroon! That's super familiar and I think I've met him before. He says "During the war I killed fifty thousand of you....what's one more?" Well my dude. I bet you didn't kill fifty thousand humans in one-on-one combat. And I'm gonna go ahead and bet on Marcus's staff-fighting prowess over his.

This is a well-choreographed and filmed staff fight. 

Jeremiah on Grey Level 17 actually is super aligned with Delenn's philosophy on the universe. But is far more freaky about the practical side of the philosophy. tbh. I think Jeremiah did LSD one too many times. 

Garibaldi isn't super serious about his threat because his choke hold lacks a fulcrum...Jeremiah could break it anytime he liked if he knew how to identify what wrestling hold he was in....signed...someone whose father wrestled in highschool and taught them from a young age to identify and break choke holds by neck-feel....

In November 2014, Harry Styles had the image of a mermaid tattooed on his left forearm. The bare-chested siren joined multitudes of other nautical themed tattoos that litter his body. 

A few days after the new tat appeared, he responded to a question at a meet and greet. 

“I am a Mermaid,” he said.

I’m not going to tell you why he said he’s a mermaid. I don’t know what it means to him. I have no idea. Maybe he simply likes mermaids. Maybe he feels like it matches the themes of his and Louis’ other nautical tattoos. I can't pretend to know.

“Mermaid” as a theme, though, has a decades long association with the LGBTQ community. And I think that’s interesting in light of the imagery that Harry himself has shared and seems to connect to.

Like, that time he wore a shirt with a famous line from The Little Mermaid.

Or in 2019, when he dressed as Ariel for a Saturday Night Live photoshoot.

I’ve seen the Little Mermaid probably dozens of times. My child and I watched it a lot when she was growing up. And while I always knew it was an allegory for being different, I didn’t think about the deeper meaning as it relates to the LGBTQ community until more recently.

According to this article from the Smithsonian, 

The central story of The Little Mermaid is, of course, 16-year-old Ariel’s identity crisis. She feels constrained by her patriarchal mer-society and senses she doesn’t belong. She yearns for another world, apart from her own, where she can be free from the limits of her rigid culture and conservative family. Her body is under the water, but her heart and mind are on land with people. She leads a double life. She is, essentially, “in the closet” (as symbolized by her “cavern”—or closet—of human artifacts, where the character-building song “Part of Your World” takes place).

The Disney version was written by writer-producer-lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken. 

The character of Ursula, though, is the real LGBTQ icon. “Conceived by Ashman, Ursula is based on the famous cross-dressing performer Divine, who was associated with the openly gay filmmaker John Waters. As scholar Laura Sells explained in a 1995 anthology of essays, Ursula’s “Poor Unfortunate Souls” song is essentially a drag show instructing the naive mermaid on how to attract Prince Eric (who is conspicuously uninterested in Ariel and most content at sea with his all-male crew and manservant Grimsby). “In Ursula’s drag scene,” Sells wrote, “Ariel learns that gender is performance; Ursula doesn’t simply symbolize woman, she performs woman.” (same source as above).

A gay man in 1980s America, Ashman had personal experience with the culture wars over “family values” and gay rights. The “Reagan Revolution” marked the arrival of the long-brewing marriage of the Republican Party with conservative Christians and included a platform that was unfriendly to gay rights, to say the least. President Reagan ignored the AIDS epidemic that swept the nation (refusing to appropriate any federal funds for research or treatment), and Republicans in general claimed the “gay plague” was God’s punishment for homosexuality. Ashman saw the film as an opportunity to advance a social message through the medium of “family entertainment.” The last thing Americans would expect from Disney was a critique of patriarchy, but sure enough, Ashman’s The Little Mermaid is a gutsy film about gender and identity—a far cry from the staid Disney catalog. Anyone who was around in 2015 knows about RBB/SBB. But if you didn’t, the Rainbow Bears (RBB/SBB, largely assumed to be created and curated by Harry and Louis) mentioned Divine on December 1, 2015. Just after they posted about her, Harry tweeted a lyric that alluded to Divine. See below.

There was a lot of speculation about Harry being potentially cast as Prince Eric in a live action version of the Little Mermaid. I’m not sure how serious those rumors were, but I can imagine based on all of this research, that he might have found the Prince wasn’t the character he related to most.

To go even further down the rabbit hole, go all the way back to the original story. The Hans Christian Anderson version has a tragic ending, that doesn’t end with the mermaid happily ever with the prince. There is some speculation that the story was an allegory for an unrequited love that Anderson had toward a straight acquaintance.

All of this could be coincident to the true purpose behind what Harry’s tattoo means to him. We will likely never know its exact meaning to him. 

But as time passes, and we see Harry waving various LGBTQ flags and hinting at being in the community himself, I think it might bear remembering that he said he WAS a mermaid. And I think that’s beautiful, Harry.

to answer your questions:

1. yes, she was popular as a teenager. sure she was a spy kid, was Sam in A Cinderella Story, voiced Violet in The Incredibles when she was 13 to 16, but her breakthrough came from her role in V for Vendetta when she was only 17 and established her place as an actress with potential and range.

Following that were her roles as a lead in The Devil Wears Prada and Atonement, both iconic, must-watch movies. so she was pretty established then.

she was media trained for sure but she’s never been a wild teenager and i imagine it was her mom and theatre friends who always kept her grounded and in check. i think she’s mostly always been an introvert as well.

2. no, i don’t imagine so. there were times when she showed that questions shocked her (that were either sexist or sexual) and at first, when she was younger, she’d get very nervous but as she grew, she put people in their places so elegantly even though it’d humiliate them and surely give them a bad rep.

3. literally all of these. she’s friends with rihanna and i imagine her modelling for fenty beauty one time (maybe for fenty’s red lipstick) where it was a shoot of her and rihanna. she has such a good, unproblematic reputation among these people so they can’t really help but love her. whenever she sees beyoncé, they’re always so excited and always talk and people have a field day over “the two queens of both industry casually talking”.

omg imagine she attended a world cup match years ago and neymar was a nervous wreck and then later said in an interview that he was about to die when she greeted him.

4. i think we once said we imagine her being in The Simpsons and was in a Scooby Doo episode!

Iconic British actress Diana Dors was known as 'the English Marilyn Monroe', and the 'Siren of Swindon'. She was born Diana Mary Fluck, October 23rd, 1931.

She enjoyed great success in British films, her first role in 1947, and later had a limited career under contract to RKO in Hollywood. In her later years she was a favourite on chat shows, and had character roles in a number of British films, including Steptoe and Son Ride Again, as well as guest turns in television programmes such as The Sweeney, The Two Ronnies, and Hammer House of Horror.

She died of cancer in 1984, at the age of 52.

This great clip (above) is from her Yorkshire Television sitcom, Queenie's Castle (1970-72), in which she has a little fun at the expense of her own image.

Thoughts on Wednesday:

1. There's a love triangle, but for once, the female lead is worth the adoration AND she's not easily impressed/romanced.

2. Love her roommate/bestie is her polar opposite and she doesn't feel compelled to match her vibe or energy at all. They respect each other.

3. Christina Ricci. Christina FUCKING Ricci. A damn queen. Love that she got to do double snap.

4. Yes, call out Pilgrims for what they were! We don't need another statue memorializing a monster.

5. Gwendoline Christie is perfect for this genre.

6. I love the subtle inclusion of Spanish music.

7. When the sheriff's son said she was giving him mixed signals, I thought....she has given every single boy in this series ZERO percent signals. What is this child talking about?

8. I'm disappointed that the entire family isn't in the series. It appears our obsession with the "Native American" scene in the original movie saga may have inspired this entire series.

9. That entire dance scene was amazing. Wednesday is iconic. Fearlessly weird.

10. Loved Gwendoline's Carrie moment.

11. Wowwww conversion therapy for werewolves. What a reference?!

12. I appreciate how inclusive the series is in including Black people, but a white woman (Morticia) telling a Black man (mayor) that he has no idea what it's like to not be believed was extremely tone deaf. A disturbing amount of unfairly imprisoned Black men in America would beg to differ.

13. I stopped taking notes and zoned out trying to guess who the murderers were. Satisfied with the double-double twist, surprising deaths, and her wily band of heroic cohorts (a siren, a werewolf, a conjurer/archer, a master of bees, and a possessed(?) hand).

14. Moral of the story: Only hug when you really mean it. That hug was definitely earned.

15. I did not realize this series would be Chilling Adventures of Sabrina meets Harry Potter meets Nancy Drew, but... I like it.

Day 3: Silent Hill

My relationship with Silent Hill is interesting. The first time I started up the game was on my PSP when I was a senior in high school. Once I had a Vita, I tried it on that, and also on my PS3 when I had one of those. Despite all of these attempts at playing the game, I've never actually finished it, nor have I made it particularly far. It's not for a lack of interest or even much of a lack of trying; I just hate tank controls (sorry, babe!).

As Adaptation Week goes on, you'll find that the sentiment "I have not consumed/completed the source material" will be a recurring theme. Still, the show must go on.

Silent Hill is a Survival Horror video game that released on the PlayStation 1 in 1999. In the game's opening scene, a man named Harry Mason is driving near Silent Hill with his daughter Cheryl. He swerves to avoid a girl in the road, crashes his car, and loses consciousness. Once he comes to, Cheryl is gone, and he must venture into the town to find her. Shortly upon entering, he is attacked by demons and soon realizes that he must brave the town's fog to find his daughter.

Now, just because I haven't played the game for myself does not mean that I don't know or understand the story. The bottom line is that when Silent Hill draws someone in and sics its demons on them, it's to teach them a lesson. Oftentimes, these protagonists have an awful, complicated past that they're running from, and the town makes them quite literally face their demons.

Sadly, much of this franchise - this movie included - fails to understand this.

Silent Hill is a 2006 adaptation of the first game, written by Roger Avary, Nicolas Boukhrief, and Christophe Gans, with Gans donning the director's helm. The movie very loosely adapts the game - a young girl named Sharon sleepwalks and has night terrors involving Silent Hill, and her mother Rose decides to drive her to the town to try to figure out what's going on with her. After she zooms away from a police officer, Rose swerves to avoid a girl in the road, crashes her car, and loses consciousness. Once she comes to, Sharon is gone, and she must venture into the town to find her. Shortly upon entering, she is attacked by demons and soon realizes that she must brave the town's fog to find her daughter.

Let me start by saying that I actually don't hate this movie. It's not a great adaptation of the source material by any means, but it's inoffensive to me as a casual enjoyer of the franchise. It has some cool ideas and it successfully brings to life a lot of elements straight out of the games. Masahiro Ito has some great designs in that first trilogy, and this movie does them justice for the most part.

I really appreciate that most of the score comes from the first four games in the franchise. The music is perfect. The sound design in general is fantastic - I mean, come on, those sirens are iconic, even in a completely different context like this one. And those visceral demon sounds - yum.

I also love some of the cinematography. There are some shots that come off like they're trying to capture the fixed camera angles from the first game - and it really works in my opinion.

These characters, however, are honestly kind of generic horror movie fodder. They make some really stupid decisions - more than can be explained away by panicking in a tense situation. Generic mother, generic little girl (screaming "SILENT HILL" during the opening lmao), generic police officer... you get the idea.

The plot itself draws a lot of inspiration from the games, but doesn't really execute those ideas in any sort of inspired way. Sharon is a similar enough name to Cheryl, and they play nearly identical roles in the story, but the execution is... strange. Like I said above, Silent Hill is supposed to be a twisted manifestation of its victim's psyche. This means that the demons and people they encounter are twisted reflections of themselves, and they're meant to learn something or die trying. This movie does not understand that.

Everyone knows Pyramid Head. Everyone loves Pyramid Head. He's cool and scary and, along with the famous nurses, is the most famous monster from the franchise. Pyramid Head and the nurses also have no business being in this movie. They are a reflection of James Sunderland, the protagonist of Silent Hill 2. They mean something to him and him alone, no one else. I get that they're cool designs, but to just throw them into anything with Silent Hill in the title because they're recognizable completely misses the point.

In the end, I enjoyed this movie. It's a bad adaptation, but it's at least watchable and has some really cool moments. I'd take it over Homecoming or Book of Memories any day.

Now, how about we return to novels for the next adaptation?

If you’re for feeling tempted to watch the Supernatural prequel because of the new diverse character announcements, I’m here to remind you that there are other fantasy/sci-fi/horror TV shows that not only have diversity (but are even led with it!)

“I want to watch a monster-hunting show led by a powerful woman!”

Wynonna Earp (SyFy): two sisters, one a wise-cracking but badass hunter of the undead and the other a more serious but sweeter girl with mysterious monster origins, are reunited after years apart. Basically, it’s Supernatural but funnier (and gayer!)

Van Helsing (SyFy): a re-imagining of the vampire hunting icon that follows his descendant Vanessa Helsing, 

Warrior Nun (Netflix): A girl comes back from the dead and learns she’s part of a secret order of demon-hunting nuns. 

Lost Girl (SyFy): Bisexual succubus Bo and her human best friend Kenzi become private investigators of the world of the “fae”, supernatural beings that range from fairies to wolves to sirens and succubi like Bo.

“I want to watch a show about Asian characters in the world of fantasy and monsters!”

Okay well, first off, I also cannot begin to tell you about how many amazing non-American supernatural shows are out there if you’re willing to read subtitles. A couple of my personal favorites are Black (a Korean horror/fantasy/mystery show about reapers and a woman who can see when people will die, Netflix) and All of Us Are Dead (a new action-fantasy drama about high schoolers battling a zombie invasion, Netflix) and I would love to hear people rec their faves, too! A few that don’t need subtitles though…

Shadow & Bone (Netflix): A well-received adaptation of the high fantasy book series, with a diverse writing staff and cast including half-Chinese Jessie Mei Lei as the lead. Fan-favorite characters from the sequels such as Inej and Jesper (a South Asian woman and a mixed-race bisexual man respectively) also got integrated into the series early and become prevalent characters in the books’ spinoffs.

Marvel’s Runaways (Hulu): a darker, teen superhero show with the found family themes you always wanted from their movies. Its highlight is easily Nico Minoru, a Japanese-American and queer sorceress who learns her and her friends' parents are part of a super-villain organization

Wu Assassins (Netflix): a Chinese-Indonesian man in San Francisco discovers he has magical origins and has to fight to keep his family’s power out of the wrong hands

Teen Wolf (MTV/Amazon Prime): While only part of the cast for Season 3-5, the show’s introduction of Japanese-Korean Kitsune Kira Yukimara and her mysterious family led to the shows’ most well-received storyline and arc. She teams up with troubled teen werewolf Scott McCall and his pack to fight an evil creature tormenting the town.

And of course Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel Legend of Korra (Nickelodeon/Amazin Prime): AMAZING animated shows with all-Asian characters and original fantasy world inspired by multiple East Asian and South Asian countries. They may be kids’ shows but they deal with a lot of heavy and mature themes that make it enjoyable for any age. 

“I want to watch a genre show with a Latino lead (bonus points if queer!)”

What We Do in the Shadows (FX/Hulu): a horror-comedy TV spinoff of Taika Waiti’s iconic and hilarious vampire mockumentary film, with racially diverse writers and cast and basically all LGBT lead characters. The true heart of the show is the queer, Mesztizo and Mexican human character Guillermo (whose identity isn’t hypersexualized like some of the vampires characters’ more fluid bisexuality/pansexuality are)

The Owl House (Disney): yes, another animated kids’ show, but I cannot recommend this fantasy series enough especially to any former "Harry Potter" fans. It’s led by a teenage, Latina human who discovers witches and a secret world of magic and is eager to learn so she can be a part of it. Luz is also bisexual, and her relationship with another young witch has been one of the most talked about storylines of the show.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels (Showtime): a horror-drama spinoff of Penny Dreadful set in Los Angeles in the 1930s that tackles both Mexican-American tensions and folklore with characters connected in a conflict between the angel Santa Muerte and demoness Magda.

Roswell, New Mexico (The CW/Netflix): While I’m hesitant to recommend any CW show, this remake of the 90’s sci-fi drama/romance (which infamously whitewashed characters from the books) ingrains diversity into the cast and plot, with the Mexican-American lead’s immigrant family dealing with real-life racial tension in New Mexico in addition to the show’s original storyline of immigrant aliens adjusting from life on a whole other planet.
