OK I’m not from the UK so I’m sorry I don’t know about this, but both Harry and Charlie have like buttons or stickers on their shirts with their ages on them for their birthdays. Is this a traditional thing in England?

Meanwhile in a pub in Henford on Bagley. Maya met up with her friend and brother in law Harry. He asked to talk with her and seemed troubled about something.

Maya: What's wrong, Harry?

Harry: (sighing) It's my dad. He had a health scare recently, and he called me and my brothers to get us to meet him, Diana, and Shane*, my stepbrother, and ‘spend more time as a family’. (Maya nods) It's like he conveniently forgot that he cheated on mom with Diana, left us for her and decided that he wanted to be in Shane’s life more than ours. He calls once a year on our birthdays, barely came to any of our sports, chess games, math club tournaments, or plays, but now he’s saying how he and Diana want us to visit and spend time with them and Shane. 

Harry clears his throat and Maya pats his hand reassuringly. She’d been friends with Harry since they were kids, and she’d seen his dad’s behaviour firsthand. When Harry and Maya had started dating at 14, they’d take her along with them on fancy family dinners, and Mr. Green would be looking at and flirting with other women, and then Mrs. Green would snip at him and he’d snip back and Maya would feel awkward as Harry and his older brother David gave their dad angry looks and their baby brother Alex played with his food and tried to ignore his parents. Maya privately thought he was a sleaze ball, and although Mrs. Green was a little old fashioned, she always welcomed Maya into her home and was warm to her while Mr. Green was pretty distant and looked down on her and her family. 

Maya: Damn, I understand Harry, your dad was kind of a jerk. Did you talk to Abby about it? (Abby is Maya’s sister and Harry's wife)

Harry: I did, but I wanted to talk with you as well, since you know what he’s like and I feel like I just needed to vent, you know?  (Maya nods and Harry smiles sheepishly). I’ll talk with David and Alex, and we’ll see what we’ll do.
