Simone decided to purchase Club Gerbit and take over management of it, the first time it’s been owned since Emily and Jay Lewis sold it!

connection between wartime administration & federalist-lean?

There's an argument that wartime service and experiencing Congress' failures firsthand as Washington's aide de camp pushed Hamilton further into the ideals that would later be seen as Federalist: a national instead of state outlook, a permanent military power, and a strong, efficient government.

I was wondering if that argument can be applied on a broader scale: is there an overall connection between revolutionary wartime administration and federalist-leaning political beliefs?

I'm by no means qualified but for my own curiosity's sake, I tried to find the political inclinations of former leaders in the war as well as members of Washington's family, who arguably should have seen the same inefficiencies as Hamilton.

Major Generals:

Washington: Tried very hard to be nonpartisan, but pretty federalist when all's said and done. Especially in 2nd term as president and in last years of life Horatio Gates: Supported Jefferson's presidency, so assuming he was leaning Democratic-Republican? Henry Knox: Federalist Philip Schuyler: Federalist William Alexander, Lord Stirling: Not sure John Sullivan: Federalist, led drive in New Hampshire for Constitution's ratification Thomas Mifflin: Federalist according to Wikipedia (was also aide to GW from June to August 1775) Arthur St. Clair: Federalist. Governor of Northwest Territory, removed by Jefferson in 1802 due to political party differences. Benjamin Lincoln: Federalist, strong policies and presence in Massachusetts Thomas Conway: Unreliable source says Federalist William Moultrie: Some sites say Federalist but he had falling out with Washington because of his pro-French actions towards Genet. Possibly nonpartisan.

Note: I tried to include length of service and timeline, arguably important (there during Valley Forge or good period?), but it's difficult in consideration of leave and such. Used Wikipedia's dates.

Edmund Randolph (August - November 75): Wiki says Federalist but I know enough about him that he was often the swinging vote in Washington's cabinet, and that he didn't sign the Constitution because he thought it too strong. Tench Tilghman (August 76 - June 80 | June 80 - Nov 83): Died in 1786. I shouldn't include him but raise a glass for our hardworking Tilghman. Robert Harrison (Nov 75 - May 76 | Military Sec May 76 - 81): Died in 1790. Wikipedia says Federalist. According to Founders Online, Gallatin was advised against Baylies because he was a "decided and we believe a sentimental federalist”. Other aides who might've had administrative work, although I'm not sure:

Aaron Burr: Very short run with Washington, and Israel Putnam's aide. Technically Democratic-Republican, but some historians have noted his politics did not always align with a party.

James Monroe: Aide to Stirling, Republican-Democratic

Concerns:

First concern: I'm not sure if the other major generals' aides would see as much administrative work directly with Congress as Washington's aides. I'm under the impression that other generals would report to Washington, than Congress, but I'm not sure.

Second concern: I also want to add that other factors would have most definitely played a role, such as familial and economic interests, which may or may not have been influenced by the war. Still, I thought it would be an interesting exercise.

Third concern: A lot of this is very shallow research as I did not have the time or energy to really dig into all of them. Please let me know if there is any inaccurate information (even Federalist or Democratic Republican is a very broad term and I'm sure their beliefs varied).

In Tempt Me at Twilight there's a moment when he fantasizes about her spread out naked and wearing her glasses after he's railed her. Then of course it goes "he decided to bother her" because it's them.

(Also.... "Heavy Harry looks like its about to go postal"

So goes one of the comments under this cartoon by John Draper for the SAR 520 Restoration SteamRanger group.

Going postal would not be too out of character for Heavy Harry, he is very easily angered; '01 for her part looks incredibly outraged, like actually personally offended.

For her part, R761 just looks confused as hell.

As a Victorian gunzel I had a good laugh, just cause seeing my bitter boy in a cartoon, even in a sardonic one is always a hoot. I appreciate the backhanded acknowledgement of both Harry and the Rs being representative of our state's flagship locos alongside '01. It hits just right.

I gotta say, this is one of the strangest comments I have ever seen:

Except that the SAR 520 class has a very strong resemblance to the Pennsylvania Railroad T-1 Class, reflecting SAR Commissioner's William Webb's and CME Fred Hugh Harrison's penchant for American locomotive design and...

It was during the state convention in Poughkeepsie that Hamilton took part in the campaign to ratify the United States Constitution in New York. He opposed conditional ratification, believing that New York would not enter the Union, while the Clinton faction, which wanted to amend the Constitution while retaining the states' secession rights, should their attempts fail.

But what I love most about this quote is the comparison to Marcus Tullius Cicero and Alexander Hamilton. Before I started studying Hamilton, I had a large interest in Roman history, especially Cicero. And it's undeniable that there are striking parallels between the two statesmen. Both Cicero and Hamilton were self-reliant figures in history, Novus homo. They were born in obscurity, under difficult means, but rose efficiently and quickly to respect through the ranks of military and civil service, resilient work, and their inception into law. Nonetheless, they were both forever burdened and never could completely suit themselves among the aristocrats of the upper-class. They even shared many characteristics; both of them were influential supporters of national constitutional power and were skilled - but also renowned to be digressive and garrulous - orators, and political philosophers. Additionally, both were incredibly stubborn, a common fault being that their refusal to yield their politics. Which would eventually lead to both their notable rise, as well as their ultimate downfall.

Hamilton often made classical references, that were even closely related to the Roman Senator. In 1794, Hamilton even wrote several essays for the American Daily Advertiser under the pseudonym, Tully. Which was an anglicized form of Marcus Tullius Cicero. [x] Additionally, he also referred to Burr as, Catiline. Which was not meant as a flattering compliment. Catiline was known for being involved in a plot to overthrow the Roman Republic. So, referring to Burr as “Catiline”, was implying that Burr was power-hungry and a threat to the new Republican US government. Hamilton wrote to Wolcott saying;

These things are to be inferred with moral certainty from the character of the man. Every step in his career proves that he has formed himself upon the model of Catiline, and he is too coldblo[o]ded and too determined a conspirator ever to change his plan.

The two men clashed, as Catiline and Cicero were infamous rivals. Matters worsened after Cicero uncovered a conspiracy hatched by Catiline that would conduct the assassination of several elected officials and the burning of the city itself. The purpose of this attack on the city, at least as it turned out later, was to wipe out the debts of both the poor and the rich—including Catiline. Some believe the resulting disruption will force Catiline to assume the leadership role he so desperately wanted. Which parallels with Burr's failed election due to Hamilton endorsing Jefferson over him.
